* The idea is to move the callback based mechanism into a derived
class. The objects can be composed to create working systems.
* The BMediaClient class supply RegisterInput/RegisterOutput
and BeginInput/BeginOutput is moved to BSimpleMediaClient.

TeamDebugInfo::GetActiveSourceCode:
- When looking at a function to decide whether to return line information
based on source or disassembly, first examine the source code state. If
the source has never been loaded for that function, but we have it available,
set it on the function at that point. This lazily addresses the fact that
LoadSourceCodeJob is called on behalf of a specific function, and
consequently only sets the source code onto that function, and not all others
present in the same file. This allows us to differentiate between the case
where a function doesn't have source code available at all, versus a function
that has simply been forced to disassembly view at this point in time.
The primary symptom of the above issue was that attempting to set a breakpoint
outside of the currently active function, but within the same file would result
in the breakpoints view indicating that the breakpoint was at line 0 rather
than the appropriate line, and breakpoints would also not be drawn in the
source view for such locations.

Chunks may be physically contiguous, but virtually disjoint. Adding
physical addresses may cause ranges to be merged incorrectly.

* The BMediaClient is an higher level API to the media_kit. It
corresponds to what the layout API was for the interface_kit.
The main idea is to allow the developer concentrate only on
higher level details and avoiding handle with the tricky parts
of the media_kit. At the same time the general purpose node that
is implemented inside would allow implementing the best techniques
around thus at the same time reducing code duplication and increasing
efficiency.
* BMediaClient is WIP, this is the initial merge of the branch.

With this piece of information, the debugger is now correctly able to
determine that the user is currently looking at disassembly despite debug
info being available, and consequently adjust its stepping behavior based on
that. Previously, the source code statement was always used, leading to it
not being possible to single step assembly lines in such a circumstance
without manually using run to cursor.
Other related cleanups:
- TeamDebugInfo now inherits BReferenceable directly, rather than relying on
indirectly inheriting it from TeamTypeInformation.
- Remove BReferenceable from TeamTypeInformation. The latter is only an
interface anyways, and inheriting that base class from multiple locations
was causing GCC5 trouble when resolving BReference<TeamDebugInfo>, even
when virtual inheritance was used.
The HashMap constructor was called before the heap is initialized,
ending up calling malloc from the OpenHashMap constructor.
Oddly it was still working on x86 but broke other platforms.
Instead we add a Lookup() static method to Partition,
which by default walks gPartitions for the id,
and recursively calls itself on the children lists.
This means we must add a partition even temporarily to gPartitions
before Scan()ing it though.

There was some mixup with the interrupt registers, still:
- The driver uses 16-bit read/write, but on SandyBridge the register is
32 bits
- There is a global interrupt enable bit, which must be set to unmask
everything else
- The bits for vblank interrupt are not the same on SNB and later PCH
based devices, and the code mixed the two.
Move the computation of the interrupt bits to an helper function, and
use it everywhere to make sure we always use the right bits.
Modesetting
===========
My previous hack was setting the transcoder registers, instead of the
display ones. Do that the way it is designed in the driver instead:
- If there is a transcoder, set its registers, but do not set the
display timings. The display will remain set at its native (and only)
resolution, and panel fitting will adjust the output of the transcoder
to match.
- If there is no transcoder, set the display registers directly to the
native resolution, as it was done on previous generation devices.
- fPipeOffset hacks no longer needed
DPMS
====
It seems the panel control register is not readable on PCH? Anyway, the
code would loop forever waiting for the bit to become unset when turning
the display off. Waiting seems to not be needed, so just remove it as
well as the "unlock" bit, which does not work for me and results in a
black screen.
Remaining hacks
===============
I still need to force HEAD_MODE_A_ANALOG to get output on pipe B (LVDS
display) working. I suspect something is common to the two pipes or not
allocated to the right one.
This version will have less side effects on other generations and help
with getting things to work on SandyBridge and possibly later devices.
Please test and report.
Add an Icon() and SetIcon() method. Override SetMarked() to set the
parent menu field icon.
Don't move the label right if icon is NULL. Make the first menu item
an IconMenuItem with a NULL icon. This allows the icon to draw in the

to be at a position equal to the offset plus the relative position.
- Add subfolder src/kits/debugger which contains the debugger's core
functionality and lower layers. Correspondingly add headers/private/debugger
for shared headers to be used by clients such as the Debugger application
and eventual remote_debug_server. Adjust various files to account for
differences as a result of the split and moves.
- Add libdebugger.so to minimal Jamfile.
* This class is provided as a safe multithreaded communication channel
between a BMediaIO-like interface and a Read/Write backend.
* Includes internal buffering and can be used to provide multithreaded
edit of the data.
* Current limitations include missing BOutputAdapter and
correct timeout handling.
* Future plans provide a BRemoteAdapterIO that using ports
and areas allow to easily send big data between processes.
- Messages that expect a reply are now tagged with a unique ID field to
indicate that expectation to the receiving socket messenger.
- The messenger now maintains a map of received reply IDs and their
corresponding messages, along with a message queue of other unsolicited
replies.
- After successfully connecting, the messenger now spawns a thread
whose sole responsibility is receiving and parsing all incoming messages,
and consequently sorting them into the aforementioned data structures based
on the presence of the reply ID. Callers who are awaiting either replies or
other messages are signalled appropriately via a semaphore. This allows
multiplexing of both types of messages on the same socket.
- Introduces new network API class BSocketMessenger, allowing one to send
and receive BMessages across a network socket in a BMessenger-like
fashion. Still very much WIP, hence currently not exposed via public headers.

* Add function core_dump_write_core_file(). It writes a core file for
the current thread's team. The file format is similar to that of
other OSs (i.e. ELF with PT_LOAD segments and a PT_NOTE segment), but
most of the notes are Haiku specific (infos for team, areas, images,
threads). More data will probably need to be added.
* Add team flag TEAM_FLAG_DUMP_CORE, thread flag
THREAD_FLAGS_TRAP_FOR_CORE_DUMP, and Team property coreDumpCondition,
a condition variable available while a core dump is progress. A
thread that finds its flag THREAD_FLAGS_TRAP_FOR_CORE_DUMP set before
exiting the kernel to userland calls core_dump_trap_thread(), which
blocks on the condition variable until the core dump has finished. We
need the team's threads to stop so we can get their CPU state (and
have a generally unchanging team state while writing the core file).
* Add user debugger message B_DEBUG_WRITE_CORE_FILE. It causes
core_dump_write_core_file() to be called for the team.
* Dumping core as an immediate effect of a terminal signal has not been
implemented yet, but that should be fairly straight forward.
Similar to arch_get_debug_cpu_state(), but the thread whose CPU state
to retrieve is specified. Works only for threads that aren't running,
and on x86-64 we can get the FPU state only when the thread was
interrupted in userland.
Not implemented for the incomplete architecture ports.
This resolves a TODO: We used thread_interrupt() to wake up the thread
from an interruptable wait. However, if the thread was already in the
kernel and about to start waiting, that would have no effect and the
thread would wait anyway. Now there's the new non-blockable signal
SIGNAL_DEBUG_THREAD, which is sent to the thread instead, making sure
that thread doesn't start waiting.
* New Intel SkyLake seems to have 9 mapped ranges
at boot. It seems like this define has been creeping
up for a while.
* Resolves the inital issue reported in #11377 on SkyLake
as well. Bonefish mentioned it might need to be raised
again... he had some good foresight there :-)
* I'm seeing the same no bootable partitions issue though
via USB after this raise. (maybe a USB 3.1 thing?)
* When the user isn't requesting a custom notification, it will
be a BMediaRoster job to do it.

These are fully compatible with BeOS dan0 R5.1 methods and are just code cleanup
of BeOS example code under the OpenTracker license.
In addition, four new colors are created:

B_LINK_ACTIVE_COLOR
B_LINK_VISITED_COLOR
These changes are documented in their proper user documentation files.
In addition, due to a history rewrite, B_FOLLOW_LEFT_TOP has been defined and
used in lieu of B_FOLLOW_TOP | B_FOLLOW_LEFT and is included in this commit.
On the app_server side, the following has changed:
Add DelayedMessage - a system by which messages can be sent at a scheduled time,
and can also be merged according to set rules. A single thread is used to service the
message queue and multiple recipients can be set for each message.
Desktop gains the ability to add message ports to a DelayedMessage so that
said messages can target either all applications or all windows, as needed.
Desktop maintains a BMessage which is used to queue up all pending color changes
and the delayed messaging system is used to enact these changes after a short
period of time has passed. This prevents abuse and allows the system to merge
repeated set_ui_color events into one event for client applications, improving
performance drastically.
In addition, B_COLORS_UPDATED is sent to the BApplication, which forwards the message
to each BWindow. This is done to improve performance over having the app_server
independently informing each window.
Decorator changes are live now, which required some reworking.

This introduces a more sane API (currently private) that allows for
safer and possibly more efficient implementations:
* It uses a struct of named and typed function pointers instead of just
a void pointer array. This adds type safety to the callbacks so the
compiler can figure out if things match up before subtle bugs get
introduced.
* It provides bounds for all strings/buffers passed to the callbacks.
* It uses const references instead of implicitly copying arguments.
* It folds stroke_x/fill_x pairs into draw_x functions with a fill
argument to reduce the amount of functions needed.
* It uses unsigned values where negative values make no sense.
The old API has been implemented on top of the new one using adapter
functions. It makes copies of all data passed to the callbacks which
effectively keeps the picture data from being modified. This matches
with the R5 behaviour.
This also reimplements the buffer parsing to be safe against corrupted
data by validating that the types actually fit in the provided sizes
and buffers (using a templated reader).
Since this class is used from the app_server with user provided data,
making it more safe is important even though it comes with a slight
overhead (replicating R5 behaviour, i.e. crashing the app_server when
corrupted data is fed, doesn't seem very appropriate here).
* This has been necessary due to the undefined call order of
of static objects. Fixes#12315.
* The bug has been caused by the linker which free unused resources,
making the BMediaRoster to run in a zombie state. In this state
anything such as a message could make the looper to crash.
* The class is reintroduced with some differences though, we are
going to protect it from another thread calling Roster() while the
BMediaRoster is quitting and implement BMediaRosterEx::Quit.
* Unregister registrar notifications before we quit our thread. Avoid
to uninitialize anything from QuitRequested as it may cause problems.
It allows to launch the app, but keep its main thread suspended instead
of automatically resuming it.
Also add appThread argument which allows to retrieve the main thread of
the launched team.
2 concrete classes which are currently implemented:
* BSpinner (works on int32s)
* BDecimalSpinner (works on doubles)
In addition BAbstractSpinner now inherits from BControl instead of
BView/BInvoker. This allowed for code simplification at the cost of needing to
cast for the decimal version because SetValue(int32 value) comes from BControl.
Also, add a spinner_button_style enum with 3 options:
* SPINNER_BUTTON_HORIZONTAL_ARROWS
* SPINNER_BUTTON_VERTICAL_ARROWS
* SPINNER_BUTTON_PLUS_MINUS
which sets the spinner arrows to either use horizontal arrows (left/right)
vertical arrows, (up/down), or +/- symbols (the default).
If the spinner button is using horizontal arrows you can decrement and increment
the spinner value by pushing control+left/right, otherwise you can increment and
decrement by pushing up or down. The reason for needing control is so that you
can move the cursor in the textbox otherwise.
Switch the 3 apps that are currently using BSpinners to use the integer variety
in Deskbar preferences, WebPostive preferences, and Screen preferences.
It provides a way for filesystems to cache a lookup failure and
therefore prevents repeated lookups of missing entries. This is a
common scenario for example in command lookup and compiling, where
each directory in PATH or each include directory is searched for the
given entry.
The individual debug heap implementations are now exposed via a
structure of function pointers and a common frontend dispatches the
malloc and malloc_debug APIs through them.
The MALLOC_DEBUG environment variable can be used to select the guarded
heap by adding 'g', otherwise the debug heap is used as the default.
Consequently the separate libroot_guarded is not needed anymore and has
been removed.
To allow the use of environment variables this early, init_env_post_heap
has been added and the heap dependent atfork() moved there. This allowed
to fold the code of init_heap_post_env into init_heap so the former has
been removed.
* Killing the thread leaks resources, and it will terminate cleanly and
safely when the destructor exits anyway.
* Fixes#12293. Thanks to ttcoder, jackburton and bonefish for investigating!
* Does not fix#12286. Going to bissect now...
* This is done by watching to registrar notifications
and providing a minimal service to contact the
media roster in private API. The roster use this
service to automatically reconnect to the media_server.
* Improve consistency by adding a BMediaRosterEx destructor
and using it for the specular functionality of ctor instead
to use the father's class destructor.

* This also fixes the shutdown process, as the registrar no longer
kills the app_server.

The AddOnManager was in the global namespace, clashing with application
classes with the same name.
The input_server has an AddOnManager of its own. When the
shortcut_catcher filter was loaded by said AddOnManager, it in turn
loaded libgame.so, which in turn loaded libmedia.so, where an
AddOnManager was created for the global AddOnManager instance in
libmedia.so. Unfortunately the wrong AddOnManager, the one from the
input_server, was created. This lead to two AddOnManagers being active
in the input_server which very well could be responsible for #11049
and #11280.
This was a regression since the move of the AddOnManager from the
media_server to libmedia.so in hrev47086. This also fits with the two
tickets.
I actually noticed the problem when debugging the shutdown process of
the input_server, where the destruction of the wrong AddOnManager
caused a deadlock with itself.
The BNetworkRoute class manages a route_entry and the sockaddr's
associated with it. It replaces the direct use of route_entry in the
BNetworkInterface API.
Using route_entry is fragile and inconvenient as it only holds pointers
to the sockaddr's. When getting a list of routes from the kernel, each
route_entry is set up so that its pointers point into the single flat
buffer that is passed around. Creating a copy of the route_entry and
then deleting the flat buffer makes the pointers in the copy stale.
Returning these route entries therefore always lead to a use-after-free
when they were eventually used.
BNetworkRoute also takes over the code and functionallity of getting
routes from RouteSupport. The corresponding method in BNetworkRoster is
replaced by a static method in BNetworkRoute.
Also distinguish between the default route and gateway of an interface.
GetDefaultRoute() now gets the default BNetworkRoute for the interface
while GetDefaultGateway() gets the associated gateway address within
that default route. Adjust network preferences panel to this change.
Note that we currently only seem to have per interface default routes
and not an actual global default route. This was already the case before
these changes and I did not further investigate what this means.
It can be used to get a stack trace of the current thread. Note that
this works by walking frame pointers and will not produce anything
useful if an application is compiled with the frame pointers omitted.
The stack base and end addresses have to be provided as arguments and
are used to check that the frame pointers fall within that range. These
values are thread specific and can be retrieved with get_thread_info().
No other sanity checks (like checking for loops in the linked list) are
done.
This is a simplified rewrite of the stack trace code from the kernel
debugger.
As this code is common to x86 and x86_64 but is not generic across
architectures I introduced x86_common as a directory to put such
sources.
Extend the get_nearest_symbol_at_address() private runtime_loader
export to include imageName and exactMatch arguments.
The imageName holds the SONAME of the image, if available, so cannot
neccessarily be extracted from the image path.
Whether or not there was an exact match, i.e. the symbol with its size
contains the address, is now returned in exactMatch.
When enabled (using heap_debug_dump_allocations_on_exit(true) or
MALLOC_DEBUG=e) this causes a dump of all remaining allocations when
libroot_debug is unloaded. It uses terminate_after to be called as
late as possible.
When combined with alloc stack traces this makes for a nice if a bit
crude leak checker. Note that a lot of allocations usually remain
even at that stage due to statically, lazyly and globally allocated
stuff from the various system libraries where it isn't necessarily
worth the overhead to free them when the program terminates anyway.
The get_stack_trace syscall generates a stack trace using the kernel
debugging facilities and copies the resulting return address array to
the preallocated buffer from userland. It is only possible to get a
stack trace of the current thread.
The lookup_symbol syscall can be used to look up the symbol and image
name corresponding to an address. It can be used to resolve symbols
from a stack trace generated by the get_stack_trace syscall. Only
symbols of the current team can be looked up. Note that this uses
the symbol lookup of the kernel debugger which does not support lookup
of all symbols (static functions are missing for example).
This is meant to be used in situations where more elaborate stack trace
generation, like done in the userland debugging helpers, is not possible
due to constraints.

Intel changed the PCH interrupt bits between Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge
to make space for the 3rd display pipe. Take this into account and check

CreateThreadEvent::DoDPC() missed a reference release to balance the
acquired reference before queuing the DPC, resulting in the
CreateThreadEvent objects being leaked.
This also removes the destructor that tried to cancel the DPC. Since
the class is reference counted and only destroyed when the DPC has
run and released the last reference, this didn't make much sense.
The signal to the team/thread is only actually sent in a deferred
procedure. To ensure that the team/thread stays valid between the DPC
being queued and it actually running, we need to acquire a reference.
Fixes#11390, where the DPC was run after the team was already
destroyed.
* VMArea::AddWaiterIfWired(): Replace the ignoreRange argument by a
flags argument and introduce (currently only) flag
IGNORE_WRITE_WIRED_RANGES. If specified, ranges wired for writing
are ignored. Ignoring just a single specified range doesn't cut it
in vm_soft_fault(), and there aren't any other users of that feature.
* vm_soft_fault(): When having to unmap a page of a lower cache, this
page cannot be wired for writing. So we can safely ignore all
writed-wired ranges, instead of just our own. We even have to do that
in case there's another thread that concurrently tries to write-wire
the same page, since otherwise we'd deadlock waiting for each other.
The thread that is being [un]scheduled already has its time_lock locked
in {stop|continue}_cpu_timers(). When updating the TeamTimeUserTimer,
the team is asked for its cpu time. Team::CPUTime() then iterates the
threads of the team and locks the time_lock of the thread again.
This workaround passes a possibly locked thread through the relevant
functions so Team::CPUTime() can decide whether or not a thread it
iterates needs to be locked or not.
This works around #11032 and its duplicates #11314 and #11344.
when uninitializing a partition or a disk (removing the partition
table), check that all partitions from that table are unmounted, as they
are about to become invalid.
Fixes#8827.
The BOOT_GDT_SEGMENT_COUNT was based on USER_DATA_SEGMENT on both
x86 and x86_64. However, on x86_64 the order of the segments is
different, leading to a too small gBootGDT array. Move the define to
the arch specific headers so they can be setup correctly in either case.
Also add a STATIC_ASSERT() to check that the descriptors fit into the
array.
Pointed out by CID 1210898.
There were 3 setting files, each an archived BMessage. Now there is only
one with all the data inside.
* Rework the SettingsPane class to save and load settings from a
message, rather than having each panel pick a file path on its own
* Move saving the app filters to the preference app, rather than the
server (so it's done at the same place as other settings)
* Rework loading prefs in the server so the settings message is read
from the file once and all settings are loaded from it.
This turns out to be more changes than I anticipated.

A BGeolocation object can query an online service to get geolocation
and geotagging data:
* LocateSelf() tries to locate the machine it is running on, by using an
online database of wifi access points
* Locate() (not yet implemented) searches a BString and converts it to
lat/lon coordinates (reverse geotagging)
* Name() (not yet implemented) finds a suitable name for the given
coordinates (address, building name, or anything fitting).
The default service used is openbmap.org, which is freely available but
not very accurate. A request has been sent to Mozilla to use MLS
(Mozilla Location Services), which is a bit more accurate but needs an
API key. MLS is used for geolocation on FirefoxOS, for mobile phones
which don't have a GPS, and the data can be contributed by Firefox for
Android or the dedicated MozStumbler app.
Alternatively, Google Maps also provide the service, but wants
people to pay for it. Google Maps data is more accurate as all Android
devices contribute data to it.
All 3 services use the same JSON-based API: we send a list of reachable
Wifi APs (mac address and signal strength), and we get lattitude and
longitude information, and possibly extra data which will currently be
unused.
This can be used to implement HTML5 geolocation with reasonably accurate
results, but it can also be used in other places. For example
FirstBootPrompt could try to guess a list of most likely languages and
keyboard layouts from it (if wifi is working at install time, that is).
Comments to #9672 agree that there's really no need to
expose the dev_t handle, thus simplifying the API.
The dev_t handle, if required, can be retrieved via
BPartition::GetVolume() instead.
This patch adds user_access() which can be used to gracefully handle
page faults that may happen when accessing user memory. It is used
by arch_cpu_user{memcpy, memset, strlcpy}() to allow using optimized
functions from the standard library.
Currently only x64 uses this, but nothing really is arch specific here.

The kernel is allowed to use fpu anywhere so we must make sure that
user state is not clobbered by saving fpu state at interrupt entry.
There is no need to do that in case of system calls since all fpu
data registers are caller saved.
We do not need, though, to save the whole fpu state at task swich
(again, thanks to calling convention). Only status and control
registers are preserved. This patch actually adds xmm0-15 register
to clobber list of task swich code, but the only reason of that is
to make sure that nothing bad happens inside the function that
executes that task swich. Inspection of the generated code shows
that no xmm registers are actually saved.

There is absolutely no reason for these functions to be in commpage,
they don't do anything that involves the kernel in any way.
Additionaly, this patch rewrites memset and memcpy to C++, current
implementation is quite simple (though it may perform surprisingly
well when dealing with large buffers on cpus with ermsb). Better
versions are coming soon.

The possibility to specify custom memcpy and memset implementations
in cpu modules is currently unused and there is generally no point
in such feature.
There are only 2 x86 vendors that really matter and there isn't
very big difference in performance of the generic optmized versions
of these funcions across different models. Even if we wanted different
versions of memset and memcpy depending on the processor model or
features much better solution would be to use STT_GNU_IFUNC and save
one indirect call.
Long story short, we don't really benefit in any way from
get_optimized_functions and the feature it implements and it only adds
unnecessary complexity to the code.

the kernel can use the area for pagetable allocation.

This reverts commit 3fbb24680c.
As I mentioned in #11131, this fix is not correct, and works around
the problem. The real reason was that arch_debug_call_with_fault_handler
was not working properly, so the fault handler went crazy.
With commit eb92810 that is fixed so this can be reverted.
If GCC knows what these functions are actually doing the resulting
code can be optimized better what is especially noticeable in case of
invocations of atomic_{or,and}() that ignore the result. Obviously,
everything is inlined what also improves performance.

Based on an earlier piece of source code of mine that parsed JSON into
QObjects, this JSON parser creates a BMessage tree.
Will be used by Stephan in HaikuDepot for communication with the web app.
* From now on, the gcc-specific system libraries (libgcc, libsupc++ and
libstdc++) are provided by separate packages built along with gcc:
- gcc_syslibs contains the shared libraries (libgcc_s.so, libsupc++.so and
libstdc++.so)
- gcc_syslibs_devel contains the static libraries and both c++ and gcc
headers
The shared libraries now make proper use of symbol versioning and there
are version-specific symlinks
* The buildsystem has been adjusted to no longer use the libraries and
headers from the cross-compiler, but use the ones provided by the
above-mentioned packages. The only exception is that the 32-bit libraries
required for the bootloader of the x86_64 architecture are still taken
from the cross-compiler.
* The new libstdc++.so contains program headers of type PT_RELRO (for
making segments read-only after relocation). While the actual feature
has not been implemented, the runtime_loader should now silently
accept (and ignore) those program headers.

Besides that this is a nicer interface, it allows us to get a the HPKG
header as a side effect of initializing the reader, thus preventing
seeking backward in the file. This makes "package recompress - <file>"
work.
* Prefix lock functions with __ to mark them as private. Add
forwarding macros to keep existing code working.
* Avoids symbol name clashes with kernel lock APIs, occuring when
using kernellandemu-lib in userlandfs. Thanks to Ingo for the
suggestion.
Until now we always declared in the HPKG header that the package file is
zlib compressed. For uncompressed files we would just store all
individual chunks uncompressed. Now we handle completely uncompressed
files slightly differently: We don't write the redundant chunk size
table anymore. The size savings are minor, but it makes the uncompressed
format read-streamable which may be handy.
* PackageFileHeap{Reader,Writer} as well as Package{Reader,Writer} and
their implementation and super classes do now internally use a
BPositionIO instead of a FD to access the package file. This provides
more flexibility needed for features to come.
* BPackageReader has already grown a new Init() version with a
BPositionIO* parameter.
Simple BPositionIO implementation using the POSIX API on a FD. In effect
similar to BFile, but more easily ported to kernel and boot loader (and
the FD is reusable).
* Ingo copied the methods into a shared location, and then obviously
"forgot" to let BFS use them. As a side note for Ingo: the complete
error GCC reported was "std::fssh_size_t" not defined with the macro
wrapper as code location. The actual problem was a "using std::size_t"
in some C++ header that accidentally got included after the wrapper.
* The shared Query code is not yet used. That'll be done another time.

The notification message has the what code B_PACKAGE_UPDATE and contains
fields "event", "location", and "change count".
* The Install() and Update() versions that take a const char* array
now check whether a string looks like a path to a local package file.
If so, they use that file instead of interpreting the string as a
search string.
* Extend the repository hierarchy. There's now a LocalRepository base
class from which InstalledRepository and the new MiscLocalRepository
derive. The latter is instantiated once and collects all package files
specified by path.
* BFatalErrorException: Add commitTransactionResult property and
respective constructor. In case committing the transaction failed,
BPackageManager throws a BFatalErrorException with the result.
* BFatalErrorException::UserInteractionHandler: Pass
BCommitTransactionResult to ProgressTransactionCommitted().
* BDaemonClient: Move inner class BCommitTransactionResult to top level
and make it public.
* BCommitTransactionResult:
- Add a whole bunch of specific error code enum values. Such an error
code is now the primary error, as opposed to before where we would
mix status_t and enum value errors. There's a systemError property
of type status_t which may provide additional information, though
(depending on the primary error type).
- Remove the errorMessage property. Due to mapping all errors to the
specific error codes this is no longer necessary. Mixing such a
message with another error description is also not very helpful when
it comes to localization (still not supported, though).
- Add several properties (paths, strings, error codes) that serve as
arguments to the primary error and are used by FullErrorMessage().
- Add issues property, a list of instances of new class
BTransactionIssue. Those describe non-critical issues (e.g. failed
update of a settings file) that occurred in the process of
committing the transaction. Those issues should be presented to the
user by the package management program.
* Exception: Adjust to transport the BCommitTransactionResult
properties.
* CommitTransactionHandler, FsTransactions, Root, Volume: Adjust to
BCommitTransactionResult/Exception changes.
* CommitTransactionHandler: Now requires a BCommitTransactionResult to
which it adds the issues it encounters. The reply BMessage is no
longer needed, though.
* Volume: Refactor common code from the three methods that use
CommitTransactionHandler into new method _CommitTransaction.
Add GetPathOrName() and PathOrName() methods which try to get some kind
of usable path or at least a file name for the entry. Useful mainly for
debugging and error reporting cases.
When an ARMv7 CPU is detected, immediately turn on the FPU. This allows
us to use vsnprintf in the TRACE call in that function, as our libc is
compiled with floating point support and will trigger a fault if the FPU
is not available.
This lets the boot go further, and crash in mmu_init. Next steps:
* Find why mmu_init is crashing
* Setup some fault handlers, otherwise we call uboot ones, and they are
not very helpful. They will also probably not work once the mmu is

This patch makes it possible to inline rdmsr and wrmsr instruction. The
performance impact shouldn't be significant since they are used relatively
rarely and wrmsr is usually a serializing instruction, but there is no reason
not to do so.
The goal of this patch is to amortize the cost of context switch by making
the compiler aware that context switch clobbers all registers. Because all
register need to be saved anyway there is no additional cost of using
callee saved register in the function that does the context switch.
Similarly to previous patch regarding GDT this is mostly a rewrite of
IDT handling code from C to C++. Thanks to constexpr IDT is now entirely
generated at compile-time.
Virtually no functional change, just rewriting the code from
"C in *.cpp files" to C++. Use of constexpr may be advantageous but
that code is not performance critical anyway.
This patch introduces support of ELF based TLS handling with lazy allocation
and initalization of TLS block for each DSO and thread. The implementation
generally follows the official ABI except that generation counter in dtv
is in fact a pointer to Generation object that contains both generation
counter and size of the dtv. That simplified the implementation a bit, but
could be changed later. The ABI requirements regariding in memory position
of TLS block is not honoured what results in static TLS model being
unsupported. However, that should not be a problem as long as
"executables" in Haiku are in fact shared objects and optimizations which
require specific TLS block in memory layout are not possible anyway.
* Instead of forcing the hash-table to use a copy of the key,
introduce and use TypeOperation template to avoid taking a
reference of a reference type (which gcc2 doesn't allow).
* PackageFSVolumeInfo: Add the directories for all relevant states.
* PackageFSPackageInfo: Include the package file's parent directory node
ref.
Package daemon and package kit still don't support old states yet.
For potential boot volumes with older packages states the respective
item in the boot volume menu now has a sub menu for selecting a state.
The boot loader functionality for this feature is complete -- i.e. the
respective kernel is loaded and the name of the old state is added to
the kernel args -- but kernel packagefs and package daemon support is
still missing.
... in filenames. Replace the existing Unicode conversion functions
with UTF conversion functions from js that he relicensed MIT for us.
Put the UTF conversion functions in a private but shared code location
so that they can be accessed throughout the kernel.
Right now we only provide functions to convert between UTF-8 and UTF-16.
At some point we should also add functions to convert between UTF-8 and
UTF-32 and UTF-16 and UTF-32 but these aren't needed by exfat.
Remove the old Unicode conversion functions from exfat as they assumed
UCS-2 characters and don't work with UTF-16 used by exfat.
Rename most variables with the term length with code unit where code units
are intended. The term length, when used, means length in bytes while code
units represent either a full 2-byte UTF-16 character or half a 4-byte
surrogate pair.
The media server tried to use node monitoring to dynamically add and
remove plug-ins, but it isn't that useful:
* When a plug-in is added, applications would have to query the media
server to get an up to date list of available formats. For example
MediaConvert populates its format menus on startup.
* When removing a plugin, if an app already had it loaded, there is not
much that can be done to keep it working.
* The list of plugins was not sorted by directories (user vs system
add-ons), so the directories were re-scanned to make sure user add-ons
were returned first, rendering the node monitoring less interesting.
Now, the format handling is done by each application. The node
monitoring is removed, instead the apps will scan the plugin directory
when first using the media kit classes. Restarting the application is
needed to update the media formats list.
...when sending the whole view state over the link.
Also inherit the fill rule when pushing states (DrawState
copy constructor). A somewhat sloppy oversight, I must add.
After load_image() the child thread is suspended and the parent is
expected to resume it later. However, it is possible that the parent
attempts to resume its child after it has been notified that the image
had been loaded but before the child managed to suspend itself. In such
case the child would suspends itself after that wake up attempt and,
consequently will not be ever resumed.
To mitigate that problem flag Thread::going_to_suspend has been added
which helps synchronizing thread suspension and continuation in a similar
way that "traditional" thread blocking is performed. This means that
the child should behave in a following manner: set its going_to_suspend flag,
notify the parent (i.e. any thread that may want to resume it), acquire
its scheduler_lock and suspend itself if the going_to_suspend flag is set.
The parent should follow pattern: clear going_to_suspend flag of the thread
that is about to be resumed, acquire that thread scheduler_lock and enqueue
it in a run queue if it is suspended.
Thanks Oliver for reporting the bug and identifying what causes it.
Most of the actual UserEvent work is done in DPC so that we don't have
to care about the limitations of the context in which UserEvent::Fire()
is invoked. This requires appropriate management of lifetime of UserEvent
instances to make sure that DoDPC() method is always called on a valid
object.
* BView gets SetFillRule/FillRule methods. The fill rule is part of the
view state.
* The B_NONZERO rule is the default. This is what we implemented before.
* The B_EVEN_ODD rule is the other common possibility for this, and
we need to support it to help WebKit to render properly.

Everything untested, but compiles, so it must work. The idea is to introduce
BAffineTransform additionally to the existing Origin and Scale properties of
BViews. One may use it in parallel or as an alternative. Painter in app_server
is not yet aware of the additional transformation. It is however already used
to transform drawing coordinates. It probably needs to work differently,
perhaps only in Painter and AGGTextRenderer.

to find the HPD gpio pin mask on the card.

* If you have a DisplayPort item attached to your card you

For non-US keyboards, the extra 102th/105th key is used to reach \. But,
we also need it to report | when shifted (this is the key left to
"enter").
This affects only USB keyboards. Thanks to gordoncjp for reporting!
When switching AppMetaMimeCreator from BMimeType to Database the
SetIcon[ForType]() calls with a BBitmap* ended up calling the vector
icon version with the icon_size as the data size argument, thus not only
not writing the bitmap icon attributes, but also clobbering the vector
icon attribute.
* BSolver/LibsolvSolver: Add FullSync() method. It uses libsolv's
SOLVER_DISTUPGRADE mode.
* BPackageManager: Add FullSync() using the new solver mode.
* pkgman: Add full-sync command.
The new command is similar to the update command without arguments, just
more aggressive, allowing downgrading or even removal of packages, to
match the state of the repositories. Just like "update" it doesn't work
properly yet.
UserEvent can be fired from scheduler_reschedule() i.e. while holding current
thread scheduler_lock. If the current thread goes sleep and during reschedule
one of its timers sends a signel to it, then scheduler_enqueue_in_run_queue()
attempts to acquire again its scheduler_lock resulting in a deadlock.
There was also a minor issue with both scheduler_reschedule() and
scheduler_enqueue_in_run_queue() acquiring current CPU scheduler mode lock.
Some websites set cookies expiring in the (not so) far future, after year 2038.
So, using time_t to store the cookie expiration date won't do. Use the
BDateTime class instead.
This makes goodsearch.com login work again (#10460).
Adjust Database{Location} to only attempt to create a mimetype when
actually necessary, and fail otherwise if a writable version doesn't yet
exist. Correspondingly, adjust callers such as
DatabaseLocation::DeleteAttribute(). Fixes a problem where a caller asking
to perform a mimeset could fail early due to SetSupportedTypes() attempting
to update the read-only mime database entry supplied by a package, and
consequently most of the mimeset operations would be skipped.

Add boot loader debug menu option "Save syslog from previous session
during boot". If enabled (defaults to true), the previous session's
debug syslog data is copy to a separate buffer and passed to the
kernel, which writes it back to the file /var/log/previous_syslog.
As long as Haiku still boots, this should now be the most convenient way
to retrieve the output from a kernel crash.

* The BIOS video mode sometimes reports a scaled mode instead of the
physical panel dimensions. Get the data from the VBT table as well, and
use it if the reported resolution is bigger.
* On first boot, force the panel native mode so the user doesn't have to

both heads at the same time.

Previous implementation based on the actual load of each core and share
each thread has in that load turned up to be very problematic when
balancing load on very heavily loaded systems (i.e. more threads
consuming all available CPU time than there is logical CPUs).
The new approach is to estimate how much load would a thread produce
if it had all CPU time only for itself. Summing such load estimations
of each thread assigned to a given core we get a rank that contains
much more information than just simple actual core load.
* Previously PE binaries would trigger the "incorrectly
executable" dialog. Now we get a special message for
B_LEGACY_EXECUTABLE and B_UNKNOWN_EXECUTABLE

This field forces kernel to track each CPU load all the time. It is not
a problem with the current scheduler on a multicore systems, but on
single core machnies or with any other future scheduler this field may
become just an unnecessary burden. It isn't difficult for an application
to compute CPU load by itself when it needs it.
The icon is meant as an addition to or replacement of the label. Icon
bitmaps for various states of the control (off, on, partially on, each
enabled or disabled, plus up to 125 custom states) can be set
individually via SetIconBitmap() (getter IconBitmap()).
The convenience method SetIcon() can be used to set the bitmaps for the
standard states from a single bitmap; it also supports cropping the
icon to its non-transparent area. Code borrowed from BIconButton.
atomic_{get, set}64() are problematic on architectures without 64 bit
compare and swap.
Also, using sequential lock instead of atomic access ensures that
any reads from cpu_ent::active_time won't require any writes to shared
memory.
The client code is not supposed to change the topology info.
It would be also nice if cpu_topology_node::children was an array of
pointers to const but that would require several const_casts in the
topology tree generation code so it's probably not worth it.
Apparently, reading from dr3 is slower than reading from memory
with cache hit.
Also, depending on hypervisor configuration, accessing dr3 may cause
a VM exit (and, at least on kvm, it does), what makes it much slower
than a memory access even when there is a cache miss.
Add get_safemode_option_early() and get_safemode_boolean_early() to get
safemode options before the kernel heap has been initialized. They use a
simplified parser.
* VMTranslationMap:
- Add DebugPrintMappingInfo(): Given a virtual address it is supposed
to print the paging structure information for that address. To be
implemented by derived classes.
- Add DebugGetReverseMappingInfo(): Given a physical addresss it is
supposed to find all virtual addresses mapped to it. To be
implemented by derived classes.
* X86VMTranslationMapPAE: Implement the new methods
DebugPrintMappingInfo() and DebugGetReverseMappingInfo().
* Add KDL command "mapping". It supports both virtual address lookups

__flatten_process_args() does now have the executable path as an
additional (optional) parameter. If specified, the function will read
the file's SYS:ENV attribute (if set) and use its value to modified the
environment it is preparing for the new process. Currently supported
attribute values are strings consisting of "<var>=<value>" substrings
separated by "\0" (backslash zero), with '\' being used as an escape
character. The environment will be altered to contain the specified
"<var>=<value>" elements, replacing a preexisting <var> element (if
any).
A possible use case would be setting a SYS:ENV attribute with value
"DISABLE_ASLR=1" on an executable that needs ASLR disabled.
* VMAddressSpace: Add randomizingEnabled property.

implemented atomic write size was 512 bytes only. Now both *pathconf()
and the FIFO implementation refer to the same constant.
A DatabaseLocation is passed to the constructor and used to verify that
the sniffed MIME type is installed instead of BMimeType::IsInstalled().
This makes the add-on independent of the default MIME DB.
Most of the hooks don't strictly need a non-empty implementation. The
defaults now simply throw exceptions in those that do. This allows the
class to be instantiated, which is useful when a BPackageManager is only
used for finding packages.
Require the installation interface and the user interaction handle to
be passed to the constructor. Formerly, derived classes set them
manually in their constructors. This makes using the class without
having to subclass it possible.
It's a browser for the system package content, where entries can be
selected to blacklist them. The selected entries are removed from the
packagefs instance in the boot loader, so that e.g. selected drivers
won't be picked up. The paths are also added to the safe mode driver
settings and will be interpreted when the system packagefs instance is
mounted by the kernel.
* Make Menu and MenuItem polymorphic.

- Make SetMarked() virtual, so it can be overridden.
- Add SetSubmenu() and Supermenu().
- Delete the submenu in the destructor.

In each installation location, it is now possible to create a settings
file "packages" that allows to blacklist entries contained in packages.
The format is:

<package name> is the base name (no version) of the respective package
(e.g. "haiku"), <entry path> is an installation location relative path
(e.g. "add-ons/Translators/FooTranslator").
Blacklisted entries will be ignored by packagefs, i.e. they won't appear
in the file system. This addresses the issue that it may be necessary to
remove a problematic file (e.g. driver, add-on, or library), which would
otherwise require editing the containing package file.
The settings file is not not "live". Changes take effect only after
reboot (respectively when remounting the concerned packagefs volume).
* get_architectures() returns the primary and the secondary
architectures in one array. That turned out to be convenient.
* Add C++ versions for get[_secondary]_architectures(), returning a
BStringList.
* Add get_architecture(), get_primary_architecture(),
get_secondary_architectures(), guess_architecture_for_path() to get
the caller's architecture, the primary architecture, all secondary
architectures, or the architecture associated with a specified path
respectively.
* Rename the find_path*() functions to find_path*_etc() and add an
optional architecture parameter. Add simplified find_path*()
functions.
* BPathFinder: Add FindPath[s]() versions with an architecture
parameter.
By passing the window pointer to ScreenSaverRunner contructor and using that
to lock the window when drawing instead of getting the window from the
Window() method of the view. This is safer.
Start the screensaver in the window thread instead of the runner
thread so that there is no lock contention for the window lock in
the runner thread when the saver starts.
The view that gets drawn into is assumed to have been prepared before
being passed to the runner thread, and this assumption has been made
true for the screensaver preview and screen_blanker apps.
Eliminate fHasStarted and the corresponding HasStarted() method in
ScreenSaverRunner as they are no longer needed.
Drawing still happens in the runner thread, and still needs to lock
the window thread potentially causing contention, yet, there
is a timeout here so the contention won't freeze the screensaver window,
only delay drawing the screensaver.
Drawing could be moved to the window thread via message passing to avoid
lock contention with the window but this would defeat a big part of the
purpose of having a separate rendering thread.
This fixes#10125 and #4260

The new functions are meant to replace many uses of find_directory():
* find_paths() is supposed to be used when the directories of a certain
kind in all installation directories are needed (e.g. font
directories, add-on directory, etc.). Using this API makes code
robust wrt addition or removal of installation locations.
* find_path() is supposed to be used when files/directories associated
with a loaded program, library, or add-on need to be found (e.g. data
files or global settings).
* find_path_for_path() is similar to find_path(), but it starts from a
given path instead of an image.
The flag main purpose is to avoid race conditions between event handler
and cancel_timer(). However, cancel_timer() is safe even without
using gSchedulerLock.
If the event is scheduled to happen on other CPU than the CPU that
invokes cancel_timer() then cancel_timer() either disables the event
before its handler starts executing or waits until the event handler
is done.
If the event is scheduled on the same CPU that calls cancel_timer()
then, since cancel_timer() disables interrupts, the event is either
executed before cancel_timer() or when the timer interrupt handler
starts running the event is already disabled.
* Replace ports list mutex with R/W-lock.
* Move team port list protection to separate array of mutexes.
Relieve contention on sPortsLock by removing Team::port_list from its
protected items. With this, set_port_owner() only needs to acquire the
sPortsLock for reading.
* Add another hash table holding the ports by name. Used by find_port()
so it doesn't have to iterate over the list anymore.
* Use slab-based memory allocator for port messages. sPortQuotaLock was
acquired on every message send or receive and was thus another point
of contention. The lock is not necessary anymore.
* Lock for port hashes and Port::lock are no longer locked in a nested
fashion to reduce chances of blocking other threads.
* Make operations concurrency-safe by adding an atomically accessed
Port::state which provides linearization points to port creation and
deletion. Both operations are now divided into logical and physical
parts, the logical part just updating the state and the physical part
adding/remove it to/from the port hash and team port list.
* set_port_owner() is the only remaining function which still locks
Port::lock and one or two of sTeamListLock[] in a nested fashion.
Since it needs to move the port from one team list to another and
change Port::owner, there's no way around.
* Ports are now reference counted to make accesses to already-deleted
ports safe.
* Should fix#8007.
When removing a string attribute, decrement the referenced string's
usage count in the string cache. This fixes the potentially incorrect
usage counts in update mode. Not a serious problem, but it could lead
to only singly (or no longer) used strings to be written to the string
subsection instead of encoding them inline and thus to slightly greater
file sizes.
When joining with a single range, firstRange would be the same as
RangeAt(endIndex - 1) and we would overwrite its offset field before
getting its end offset, thus possibly resulting in a wrong joined range
size.
Simple scheduler behaves exactly the same as affine scheduler with a
single core. Obviously, affine scheduler is more complicated thus
introduces greater overhead but quite a lot of multicore logic has been
disabled on single core systems in the previous commit.
The method is supposed to return B_OK as long as the _result object has
been initialized, even if committing the transaction failed. Fixes the
unhelpful error messages of pkgman when committing the transaction
failed for some reason.
Update BKeymap::GetModifiedCharacters() to translate a given character
and set of modifiers filling out a list of all characters that match for another
set of modifiers.
This allows us to, for example, get all characters in the normal map that
have the '+' character in the corresponding shift map.
It is fully generic allowing one to get a list of characters in any map given
a character and modifiers of another map.
Also I converted from using a BList to using a BObjectList.
With this, along with BWindow::HasShortcut(), the semantic shortcuts now
work not only with Command+'=', but any key in the normal map that has
'+' in it's shift map as long as it isn't already taken by another shortcut.
This method fills out the passed-in BList of modified utf-8 characters for
a given utf-8 character and set of modifiers.
For example if you pass in "=" and B_SHIFT_KEY the list will get filled
out with each character in the shift map that has "=" in the normal map.
Each supported keymap modifier combination is available.
The reason this is useful will soon become apparent.
A BList is used because the character might be mapped multiple times,
for example if you have a Mac keyboard you've got two "=" keys, one in
0x1d and one in 0x6a.
The caller is responsible for creating the BList and destroying it as well as
freeing the resulting character strings.
This builds off of hrev46243 adding add-on directories all in one place
in AddOnMonitorHandler instead of repeating the code 3 times in
IndexServer, AddOnManager, and MediaAddOnServer.
The safe mode checking in InputServer is now redundant since it all
gets funneled into AddOnMonitorHandler::AddAddOnDirectories()
and the safe mode flags are checked there.
We should probably remove the InputServer::SafeMode() method, but,
I didn't want to break anything that depended on it so I left it.
There is a global heap of cores, where the key is the highest priority
of threads running on that core. Moreover, for each core there is
a heap of logical processors on this core where the key is the priority
of currently running thread.
The per-core heap is used for load balancing among logical processors
on that core. The global heap is used in initial decision where to put
the thread (note that the algorithm that makes this decision is not
complete yet).
Simple scheduler is used when we do not have to worry about cache affinity
(i.e. single core with or without SMT, multicore with all cache levels
shared).
When we replace gSchedulerLock with more fine grained locking affine
scheduler should also be chosen when logical CPU count is high (regardless
of cache).
In SMP systems simple scheduler will be used only when all logical
processors share all levels of cache and the number of CPUs is low.
In such systems we do not have to care about cache affinity and
the contention on the lock protecting shared run queue is low. Single
run queue makes load balancing very simple.
Kernel support for yielding to all (including lower priority) threads
has been removed. POSIX sched_yield() remains unchanged.
If a thread really needs to yield to everyone it can reduce its priority
to the lowest possible and then yield (it will then need to manually
return to its prvious priority upon continuing).
Each thread has its minimal priority that depends on the static priority.
However, it is still able to starve threads with even lower priority
(e.g. CPU bound threads with lower static priority). To prevent this
another penalty is introduced. When the minimal priority is reached
penalty (count mod minimal_priority) is added, where count is the number
of time slices since the thread reached its minimal priority. This prevents
starvation of lower priorirt threads (since all CPU bound threads may have
their priority temporaily reduced to 1) but preserves relation between
static priorities - when there are two CPU bound threads the one with
higher static priority would get more CPU time.
Should already have been done back when the semantics for the
B_COMMON_*DIRECTORY constants was changed.
Currently old and new version behave the same. So this is just a
contingency measure ATM.
* This does intentionally break source compatibility, so that a review
of concerned code is forced.
* Binary compatibility should be maintained in most cases. The values
of the constants for the writable directories are now used for the
writable system directories. The values for the non-writable
directories are mapped to "/boot/system/data/empty/...", an empty or
non-existent directory, so that they will simply be skipped in search
paths. Only code that explicitly expects to find something in a
B_COMMON_* directory, will fail.
* Remove support for the "common" installation location from packagefs,
package kit, package daemon, package managers.
* Rename the B_COMMON_*_DIRECTORY constants referring to writable
directories to B_SYSTEM_*_DIRECTORY.
* Remove/adjust the use of various B_COMMON_*_DIRECTORY constants.
I'm sure some occurrence still remain. They can be adjusted when the
remaining B_COMMON_*_DIRECTORY constants are removed.
* find_directory() and hard-coded paths use /boot/system instead of
/boot/common.
* The build system creates the writable directories in /boot/system
instead of /boot/common.
* The build system no longer installs any packages in /boot/common.
* The new class is called DriverSettingsMessageAdapter which can translate
between a driver_settings file, and a BMessage.
* The net_server Settings class is now just using this class.
- BJobStateListener: Add progress state and corresponding hook.
- FetchFileJob: Notify job progress hook on libcurl notifications.
- UserInteractionHandler: Add hooks for download progress and checksum
validation progress.
- PackageManager: inherit from JobStateListener and watch for job
notifications for internally generated jobs. Forward to corresponding
UserInteractionHandler hooks as needed.
- Adapt pkgman, HaikuDepot and package_daemon to above changes.
Neither HaikuDepot nor package_daemon's progress hooks are wired up to
do anything yet though.
- Pull functionality back into package manager itself since the extra
indirection doesn't really buy us anything in this case, as neither
request that it handles requires a decision provider.
- Adjust pkgman and HaikuDepot accordingly.
* imported asc-num.txt as a reference, was used to generate the asc sense table.
* use the sense asc and key tables to know which action and status codes are
to be applied.
* tested with an hard disk and a dvd reader.

Support for 64-bit atomic operations for ARMv7+ is currently stubbed
out in libroot, but our current targets do not use it anyway.
We now select atomics-as-syscalls automatically based on the ARM
architecture we're building for. The intent is to do away with
most of the board specifics (at the very least on the kernel side)
and just specify the lowest ARMvX version you want to build for.
This will give flexibility in being able to distribute a single
image for a wide range of devices, and building a tuned system
for one specific core type.
This adds the -mapcs-frame compiler flag for ARM to have "stable"
stack frames, adds support to the kernel for dumping stack crawls,
and initial support for iframes. There' much more functionality
to unlock in KDL, but this makes debugging already a lot more
comfortable.....
Since both platforms can boot the same kernel we must accept either
arg, so we make sure they are identical for now.
TODO: use a union or KMessage maybe?

If we fail to lock the window in the kInitialTickRate time, quit the thread.
We were deadlocking causing #4260 because you could open several
threads by moving through the screen saver list quickly all trying to lock
the same window at the same time, classic deadlock.
* Move RepositoryBuilder class to libpackage and add B* prefix to name.
* Pull BPackageManager class out of PackageManager and move to
libpackage. The base class is customizable via three handler objects
responsible for transaction handling, request execution, respectively
user interaction.
* Reorganize _ApplyPackageChanges(): Now we first prepare the
transactions for all affected installation locations (downloading
files etc.) and then commit them.
* The default module is replaced by the Virtio RNG module when found.

It provides the functionality to copy file system entries (also
recursively). The code originates from the copyattr sources. Some

adjusted for library use (i.e. no exit()s or fprintf()s). An optional
controller object can be set to customize the behavior.
* Mostly useful for virtualization at the moment. Works in QEmu.
* Can be enabled by safemode settings/menu.

This means that there is just one status we have to check, the menu
fields, and the child menus agree. This change takes practical form
in the Backgrounds preflet which disables the placement menu when
the image is set to "None", but, only the menu got disabled and not the
parent menu field so the label was erroneously still drawn as enabled.
* the processing of requests in drivers is eased a bit with this change, but
this could be improved for instance by enabling a driver to dequeue items
in a service thread instead of the interrupt handler.

Add inner class BWatchingInterface and method SetWatchingInterface().
This abstracts the calls to watch_node() and stop_watching(), thus
making it possible to use the path monitor in Tracker.

It is no longer necessary, or even desirable for us to set the max
content width of the menu bar of a BMenuField now that BMenuItem
truncation and BMenuField sizing are working.
The user may, however, wish to set the max content width of the menu
bar of a BMenuField themselves like so:
menuField->MenuBar()->SetMaxContentWidth(width);
and the Interface Kit will automatically deduct the left and right
margins from the width including the space used by the drop down arrow.
* For all identifiers: Rename global settings file to global writable
file. We want to use the respective attribute also for other writable
files, not only settings files.
* User settings file/global writable file info/attribute: Add
isDirectory property/child attribute. This allows declaring global/
user settings directories associated with the package.
... cancelling the normal item truncation behavior.
This funcationality comes from BeOS R5, we need to reproduce it for
backwards compat. KeymapSwitcher depends on it at least.
Minimum width is 20px, was set in last commit, comes from BeOS R5.

provided by Virtio. Thus future driver additions might require patching the device
manager.
* virtio.h is still private, the API is subject to changes.
* virtio_pci.h, virtio_blk.h, virtio_ring.h are copied unchanged from FreeBSD.

possible that e.g. a uint was read and then interpreted as a
const char*, if a string was expected for that attribute.
Global and user settings files can be declared. For global ones an
update policy can be specified. If not specified, the settings file is
not included in the package, but created by the program (or user) later.
If an update type is specified, it defines what to do with the settings
file when updating the package to a newer version.
User settings files are never included in the package; they are always
created by the program or the user. If the package contains a template/
default settings file, it can be declared, but for informative purposes
only.
* Add minor_version to hpkg_header and hpkg_repo_header and make
heap_compression uint16.
* If the minor version of a package/repository file is greater than the
current one unknown attributes are ignored without error. This allows
introducing new harmless attributes without making the resulting files
unreadable for older package kit versions.
* ReaderImplBase:
- Add virtual CreateCachedHeapReader() which can create a cached
reader based on the given heap reader.
- Rename HeapReader() to RawHeapReader() and add HeapReader() for the
cached heap reader.
- Add DetachHeapReader() to allow a clients to remove the heap
reader(s) after deleting the ReaderImplBase object.
* packagefs:
- Add CachedDataReader class, which wraps a given
BAbstractBufferedDataReader and provides caching for it using a
VMCache. The implementation is based on the IOCache implementation.
- Use CachedDataReader to wrap the heap reader. For file data that
means they are cached twice -- in the heap reader cache and in the
file cache -- but due to the heap reader using a VMCache as well,
the pages will be recycled automatically anyway. For attribute data
the cache should be very helpful, since they weren't cached at all
before.
* Add flags parameter to Init() of BPackageReader and friends.
* Introduce flag B_HPKG_READER_DONT_PRINT_VERSION_MISMATCH_MESSAGE and
don't print a version mismatch error when given.
* package extract/list: Use the new flag.
* Pull _UnwriteLastPartialChunk() out of Reinit() for reuse.
* _UnwriteLastPartialChunk(): fPendingDataSize wasn't set.
* _PushChunks(): Some simplifications for clarity.
* ChunkBuffer/RemoveDataRanges(): Use data reading and decompression
methods provided by our base class instead of duplicating the
implementation.
* RemoveDataRanges():
- _FlushPendingData() before starting, so we don't ignore the pending
data and _UnwriteLastPartialChunk() when done, so a partial chunk
is read back into the pending data buffer.
- fUncompressedHeapSize wasn't reset before the main processing loop,
thus resulting in an erroneous size later on.
* Introduce BPackageWriterParameters which comprises all parameters
for package creation, currently flags and compression level. Such an
object can be passed to BPackageWriter::Init() and is passed on to
PackageWriterImpl and WriterImplBase.
* PackageFileHeapWriter: Add compressionLevel property and pass the
value on to ZlibCompressor.
* package add/create: Add options -0 ... -9 to specify the compression
level to be used.
Instead of handling compression for individual file/attribute data we
do now compress the whole heap where they are stored. This
significantly improves compression ratios. We still divide the
uncompressed data into 64 KiB chunks and use a chunk offset array for
the compressed chunks to allow for quick random access without too much
overhead. The tradeoff is a limited possible compression ratio -- i.e.
we won't be as good as tar.gz (though surprisingly with my test
archives we did better than zip).
The other package file sections (package attributes and TOC) are no
longer compressed individually. Their uncompressed data are simply
pushed onto the heap where the usual compression strategy applies. To
simplify things the repository format has been changed in the same
manner although it doesn't otherwise use the heap, since it only stores
meta data.
Due to the data compression having been exposed in public and private
API, this change touches a lot of package kit using code, including
packagefs and the boot loader packagefs support. The latter two haven't
been tested yet. Moreover packagefs needs a new kind of cache so we
avoid re-reading the same heap chunk for two different data items it
contains.
It uses sub-namespace BPackage::BHPKG::V1. Unlike the one for the
current format version, the V1 version of BPackageInfoContentHandler
lives in BHPKG(::V1) sub-namespace and is private.
* Use enums/constants/functions instead of preprocessor macros.
* Missing include in PackageInfoAttributeValue.h.
* PackageReaderImpl::Init(): Check version before header size and
return B_MISMATCHED_VALUES instead of B_BAD_DATA, if the version
doesn't match. This allows callers to determine the condition and
try a reader for a different version. A more flexible interface for
that case would be nice, but since we want to support the old package
version only temporarily, the current solution should be good enough.
* If at least one image is either B_HAIKU_ABI_GCC_2_ANCIENT or
B_HAIKU_ABI_GCC_2_BEOS almost all areas are marked as executable.
* B_EXECUTE_AREA and B_STACK_AREA are made public. The former is enforced since
the introduction of DEP and apps need it to correctly set area protection.
The latter is currently needed only to recognize stack areas and fix their
protection in compatibility mode, but may also be useful if an app wants
to use sigaltstack from POSIX API.
* Factor out the code to add some data to the about window, with a header and a content under it
* Make this method public so it's possible to add custom entries in an about box
* If the method is called with only the header or only the content, the text is added non-bold and non-indented (like the description entry*).
* Make the header text bold. I'm not sure it looks that good, after all. Thoughts ?
* Pull out base class MimeEntryProcessor out of AppMetaMimeCreator.
* Pull class MimeInfoUpdater out of UpdateMimeInfoThread and derive it
from MimeEntryProcessor.
* MimeInfoUpdater: Instead of BMimeType::GuessMimeType(), use
Database::GuessMimeType() directly.
* Add class DatabaseLocation. It contains a list of the MIME DB
directory paths plus methods to access type files.
* Move all low-level MIME DB access functions from
database_{support,access} to DatabaseLocation. All code that formerly
used those now requires a DatabaseLocation object. In BMimeType and in
the registrar the default object is used, but the low-level classes
can now be reused with different locations.
* Move get_icon_data() from database_access to database_support and
delete the former, which is now empty.
* Together with database_{access,support}.cpp it is built into a static
library.
* Add new interfaces MimeSniffer and Database::NotificationListener for
plugging in registrar specific functionality (the sniffer add-on
support and the notification mechanism).
Each installation location (system, common, common/non-packaged,
~/config, ~/config/non-package) can now have a read-only data/mime_db
directory. ~/config/settings/beos_mime is now named mime_db as well. The
contents of all directories makes up the MIME DB. Entries in more
specific locations shadow entries in more general locations. Only the
directory in ~/config/settings is where the registrar writes changes to.
The new layout allows packages to contribute entries to the MIME DB by
simply providing the respective files in data/mime_db. Consequently the
user settings directory is supposed to contain only the things the user
has actually changed.
Seems to work fine as far as tested. A few issues, though:
* The registrar doesn't monitor the directories yet, so it doesn't
notice entry changes due to package de-/activation.
* ATM it is not possible to remove a MIME type that is not in the user
settings directory, although the FileTypes GUI suggests that it is.
We'd have to work with white-outs, since we cannot remove the files in
the data/mime_db directories. Or, alternatively, the API has to be
extended and the FileTypes GUI adjusted to disable the "Remove" button
in such a case.
An arbitrary number of directories can be added, which the implemented
BEntryList interface presents as a single merged entry list. Three
different merge policies are supported which define how entries that
appear in more than one directory are treated.
Remove no longer needed header includes, most that I recently added
a few that were already there but just aren't needed anymore. Don't
use BPrivate::MenuPrivate namespace.
Just a few commits ago I moved the label truncation code out of
BMenuItem and into BMCMenuBar because the truncation had to happen
outside of BMenuItem. Turns out, that wasn't true so I'm moving the
label truncation back into BMenuItem and removing the _DrawItems()
method from BMCMenuBar.
Note that the code is not a copy of what was there before, but, the
updated version I created for BMCMenuBar. The main difference is that
I use menuPrivate.Padding() instead of GetItemMargins() and I always
use the width of the parent menu frame instead of using fBounds even
if the state is not MENU_STATE_CLOSED. These are changes needed for
BMCMenuBar but should work just as well for a regular BMenu.
...instead of in BMenuItem and remove the truncation code from BMenuItem.
The label truncation code cannot work in BMenuItem because the super
menu helpfully resizes itself to fit the menu item. So, instead we do the label
truncation in BMCPrivate making sure that BMenuItem there can't expand the
BMCMenuBar because we set the width to fMenuField->_MenuBarWidth()
explicity.
Note that this only truncates the label in BMCMenuField, i.e. the label inside
the menufield, it does nothing to the labels of the menu items in the attached
BMenu or BPopUpMenu which is exactly what we want.
Was passing !fixedSize into the view flags of BMenuBar, which made no sense.
Stop doing that, set fixedSize to true instead.
Remove the fixedSize parameter from this contructor, it's too late for that.
In some cases, BStringColumn wouldn't properly detect that an update was
needed, and would consequently fail to truncate a string as needed with
a column resize.
* Set its type to B_MODAL_WINDO, and also set B_NOT_MOVABLE
* Since this removes the window tab, add an "Ok" button to close the window
* Remove the GetWindow mess and just use it as any regular window
* Adjust all callers again
The AlertPosition method doesn't seem to work right, the window pops up
offset to the right. I also noticed that some of our calls to BAboutWindow
are actually not reacable because we removed Abutrequested from the apps.
Maybe we should clean them up (locale preflet and activity monitor are examples)
More annoying is the fact that opening a modal window from a deskbar replicant
is modal against the whole deskbar. Not sure what to do about that.
- debug_create_symbol_lookup_context() now takes an image ID
parameter that can optionally be used to restrict the symbols
it gathers to only those of the targeted image rather than the
entire team, allowing for significantly more lightweight usage
when the desired image is known. The previous behavior can still
be obtained if desired by passing -1 as said ID.
- Adjust callers.
BAboutWindow returned false in QuitRequested in order to hide instead of closing.
Not only this keeps a BLooper running for a rarely used window, but it also
prevents quitting an application in the window was not destroyed first.
* Remove aforementioned QuitRequested method,
* Add a static GetWindow method that returns the existing about window, if there
is one, or creates one if there is not. A boolean can be set to tell the caller
what happened,
* Adjust all callers to use that new method, instead of managing the window themselves.
- Instead of implicitly registering and unregistering a service
instance on construction/destruction, DefaultNotificationService
now exports explicit Register()/Unregister() calls, which subclasses
are expected to call when they're ready.
- Adjust all implementing subclasses. Resolves an issue with deadlocks
when booting a DEBUG=1 build.
* Add "bool kernel" parameter to vfs_entry_ref_to_path(), so it can be
specified for which I/O context the entry ref shall be translated.
* _user_entry_ref_to_path(): Use the calling team's I/O context instead
of the kernel's. Fixes the bug that in a chroot the syscall would
return a path for outside the chroot.
* BActivationTransaction:
- Remove non-trivial constructor.
- Remove package list parameters from SetTo().
- Add AddPackageTo{Dea,A}ctivate().
* BDaemonClient:
- Add CreateTransaction(). It creates a transaction directory and
initializes a BActivationTransaction. Packages to de-/activate have
to be added afterwards.
- Add BCommitTransactionResult::FullErrorMessage().
* daemon: Handle new request B_MESSAGE_COMMIT_TRANSACTION. It activates
and deactivates given sets of packages. The new packages must be
placed in a directory in the administrative directory. The daemon
moves them to the packages directory and the deactivated packages to
a subdirectory it creates. It also save the old activation state
there.
* Add private BActivationTransaction, describing an activation change
transaction.
* BDaemonClient: Add CommitTransaction(), which sends a given
BActivationTransaction as a B_MESSAGE_COMMIT_TRANSACTION request to
the daemon.
Completely untested yet.
* Rename PackageDaemonDefs.h to DaemonDefs.h.
* Replace the MESSAGE_GET_PACKAGES by the new
B_MESSAGE_GET_INSTALLATION_LOCATION_INFO, which not only returns the
packages, but also other information about the installation location.
* daemon: Volume: Implement a change count which is bumped whenever
packages are activated/deactivated/added/removed. Cache the reply
for a location info request, using the change count to check whether
it is still up-to-date.
* Add private BDaemonClient for communication with the daemon.
* BRoster:
- Add GetInstallationLocationInfo() using BDaemonClient.
- Reimplement GetActivePackages(), using
GetInstallationLocationInfo().
Currently there are two generators. The fast one is the same one the scheduler
is using. The standard one is the same algorithm libroot's rand() uses. Should
there be a need for more cryptographically PRNG MD4 or MD5 might be a good
candidates.
* daemon: Implement private message protocol to retrieve the active
packages.
* BPackageRoster::GetActivePackages(): Get the active packages list
from the daemon.
* We first process the node monitoring events, collecting the required
package activation changes, then apply all changes together.
* Change the PackageFSActivationChangeItem/-Request structs. The former
is no longer variable in size, which makes it easier to work with.
* Add PACKAGE_FS_OPERATION_GET_PACKAGE_INFOS which returns the node refs

This means the B_COLOR_WHICH_COUNT goes from being a public constant to a
private one. It sill looks like a public constant starting with a B_ though.
I hope that's not a big deal. Too bad we can't get the count of an enum.
This fixes a maintainance problem where you have to update this otherwise
unrelated file to keep it in sync whenever you add a color constant.
I've added a B_COLOR_WHICH_COUNT constant to the color_which enum which should
be updated to point to the newest color constants as new ones are added. I
reworked ServerReadOnlyMemory to use this constant instead of using to the
current largest color constant directly. If you use B_COLOR_WHICH_COUNT to
refer to a color in your code expect to get unpredictable and nonsensical
results. Most likely you'll get an undefined result which will return black
but don't depend on it.
The net effect of this is that ServerReadOnlyMemory doesn't need to be updated
anymore when new color constants are introduced but will continue to produce
correct results.
Eliminate kNumColors constant, replace it with B_COLOR_WHICH_COUNT
This allows you to change the scrollbar thumb color in Appearance preferences.
The default color is 216, 216, 216 so the scroll bar thumb looks the same by
default. Perhaps someday this can be updated to something a bit more colorful.
Placing commpage and team user data somewhere at the top of the user accessible
virtual address space prevents these areas from conflicting with elf images
that require to be mapped at exact address (in most cases: runtime_loader).
This patch introduces randomization of commpage position. From now on commpage
table contains offsets from begining to of the commpage to the particular
commpage entry. Similary addresses of symbols in ELF memory image "commpage"
are just offsets from the begining of the commpage.
This patch also updates KDL so that commpage entries are recognized and shown
correctly in stack trace. An update of Debugger is yet to be done.
Set execute disable bit for any page that belongs to area with neither
B_EXECUTE_AREA nor B_KERNEL_EXECUTE_AREA set.
In order to take advanage of NX bit in 32 bit protected mode PAE must be
enabled. Thus, from now on it is also enabled when the CPU supports NX bit.
vm_page_fault() takes additional argument which indicates whether page fault
was caused by an illegal instruction fetch.
x86_userspace_thread_exit() is a stub originally placed at the bottom of
each thread user stack that ensures any thread invokes exit_thread() upon
returning from its main higher level function.
Putting anything that is expected to be executed on a stack causes problems
when implementing data execution prevention. Code of x86_userspace_thread_exit()
is now moved to commpage which seems to be much more appropriate place for it.
Inside the page randomization of initial user stack pointer is not only a part
of ASLR implementation but also a performance improvement that helps
eliminating aligned 64 kB data access.
Minimal user stack size is increased to 8 kB in order to ensure that regardless
of initial stack pointer value there is still enough space on stack.
* If we have a configured network, then we always try to connect to it
as soon as the interface has been brought up.
* If we don't have a configured network and are auto configuring, we
use the AutoconfigLooper to also do initial auto joins.
* Before issuing auto joins we need to wait for scan results to come
in, so we watch for corresponding messages.
For now auto joining is a one shot attempt as the infrastructure to
properly tell reasons for scans apart is not yet there.
The physical memory map area was not included in the kernel virtual
address space range (it was below KERNEL_BASE). This caused problems
if an I/O operation took place on physical memory mapped there (the
bad address error seen in #9547 was occurring in lock_memory_etc()).
Changed KERNEL_BASE and KERNEL_SIZE to cover the area and add a null
area that covers all of it. Also changed X86VMTranslationMap64Bit to
handle large pages in Query(), as the physical map area uses large
pages.
* This parses the reported CPU name, and tries to translate it to a normal
and concise identifier.
* For example, it will translate "AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-core Processor" into
"FX™ 8320" or "Dual Core AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 275 HE" into
"Opteron™ 275 HE".
* This means we can remove AMD strings for those models for which this
function produces useful results.
* Replace {Set|Remove}MasterKey() by generic {Set|Remove}UnlockKey()
that works on a keyring.

This should hopefully fix problems encountered with a clang-compiled
Locale Kit.
Since we're using multi-part uImage format, we can add the FDT as
a seperate "blob" in the uImage, if the used U-Boot version is not
"FDT enabled".
This is used for example for our Verdex target. Currently I've got
a local hack in the platform/u-boot/Jamfile, looking into pulling
in the FDT files and a proper Jam setup to do that properly...
This detects everything up to ARMv6 right now. Need to check more
recent ARM ARMs for ARMv7 detection.
The detected details get passed on to the kernel, which can use
the pre-detected info for selecting right pagetable format and such.
Copyright removal of Axel done after agreement with Axel @ BeGeistert
that for files that were copy/pasted from x86 arch and then fully
replaced the implementation, removal of original copyright holder is
allowed, since their actual code is gone ;)
Pass the BHandler object that opened the about window to BAboutWindow.
When the window closes, send a kAboutWindowClosed message back to the
handler. This allows the handler to set the variable to NULL.
Implement the new about dialog constructor in all apps that use it.
Remove the old constructor. This now works reliably for all cases I
tested without crashing and does the right thing on close. The setup
and teardown is a bit more complicated than I wanted though.
Unfortunately this seems to be necessary when not using a BAlert.
Fetching the app icon does not work reliably yet. This is because for
replicants the app may not be running. I may have to pass the icon in
instead of grabbing it from the signature.
* Grabs the app icon and version from the resource file.
* Allow you to specify the copyright holder instead of hardcoding
"Haiku, Inc."

This is to make sure all ARM platforms will benefit from planned work on this
MMU/CPU code. The less code duplicated, the better.
Compile-tested for all supported ARM platforms
This also implements the fault handler correctly now, and cleans up the
exception handling. Seems a lot more stable now, no unexpected panics or
faults happening anymore.
