Live migration with spice works like this today:
(1) client_migrate_info monitor cmd
(2) spice server notifies client, client connects to target host.
(3) qemu waits until spice client connect is finished.
(4) send over vmstate (i.e. main part of live migration).
(5) spice handover to target host.
(3) is implemented by making client_migrate_info a async monitor
command. This is the only async monitor command we have.
The original reason to implement this dance was that qemu did not accept
new tcp connections while the incoming migration was running, so (2) and
(4) could not be done in parallel. That issue was fixed long ago though.
Qemu version 1.3.0 (released Dec 2012) and newer happily accept tcp
connects while the incoming migration runs.
Time to drop step (3). This patch does exactly that, by making the
monitor command synchronous and removing the code needed to handle the
async monitor command in ui/spice-core.c

The VNC server websockets decoder will read and buffer data from
websockets clients until it sees the end of the HTTP headers,
as indicated by \r\n\r\n. In theory this allows a malicious to
trick QEMU into consuming an arbitrary amount of RAM. In practice,
because QEMU runs g_strstr_len() across the buffered header data,
it will spend increasingly long burning CPU time searching for
the substring match and less & less time reading data. So while
this does cause arbitrary memory growth, the bigger problem is
that QEMU will be burning 100% of available CPU time.
A novnc websockets client typically sends headers of around
512 bytes in length. As such it is reasonable to place a 4096
byte limit on the amount of data buffered while searching for
the end of HTTP headers.

The logic for decoding websocket frames wants to fully
decode the frame header and payload, before allowing the
VNC server to see any of the payload data. There is no
size limit on websocket payloads, so this allows a
malicious network client to consume 2^64 bytes in memory
in QEMU. It can trigger this denial of service before
the VNC server even performs any authentication.
The fix is to decode the header, and then incrementally
decode the payload data as it is needed. With this fix
the websocket decoder will allow at most 4k of data to
be buffered before decoding and processing payload.

The previous change to the auth scheme handling guarantees we
can never have nested TLS sessions in the VNC websockets server.
Thus we can remove the separate gnutls_session instance.
Signed-off-by: Daniel P. Berrange <berrange@redhat.com>

When TLS is required, the primary VNC server considers it to be
mandatory. ie the server admin decides whether or not TLS is used,
and the client has to comply with this decision. The websockets
server, however, treated it as optional, allowing non-TLS clients
to connect to a server which had setup TLS. Thus enabling websockets
lowers the security of the VNC server leaving the admin no way to
enforce use of TLS.
This removes the code that allows non-TLS fallback in the websockets
server, so that if TLS is requested for VNC it is now mandatory for
both the primary VNC server and the websockets VNC server.
Signed-off-by: Daniel P. Berrange <berrange@redhat.com>

The way the websockets TLS code was integrated into the VNC server
made it essentially useless. The only time that the websockets TLS
support could be used is if the primary VNC server had its existing
TLS support disabled. ie QEMU had to be launched with:
# qemu -vnc localhost:1,websockets=5902,x509=/path/to/certs
Note the absence of the 'tls' flag. This is already a bug, because
the docs indicate that 'x509' is ignored unless 'tls' is given.
If the primary VNC server had TLS turned on via the 'tls' flag,
then this prevented the websockets TLS support from being used,
because it activates the VeNCrypt auth which would have resulted
in TLS being run over a TLS session. Of course no websockets VNC
client supported VeNCrypt so in practice, since the browser clients
cannot setup a nested TLS session over the main HTTPS connection,
so it would not even get past auth.
This patch causes us to decide our auth scheme separately for the
main VNC server vs the websockets VNC server. We take account of
the fact that if TLS is enabled, then the websockets client will
use https, so setting up VeNCrypt is thus redundant as it would
lead to nested TLS sessions.

If the VNC server is built without tls, sasl or websocket support
and the user requests one of these features, they are just silently
ignored. This is bad because it means the VNC server ends up running
in a configuration that is less secure than the user asked for.
It also leads to an tangled mass of preprocessor conditionals when
configuring the VNC server.
This ensures that the tls, sasl & websocket options are always
processed and an error is reported back to the user if any of
them were disabled at build time.

simple: When the limit is reached no new connections are allowed.
The logic to apply the limit to connections in "connecting" state (this
is the state you are in *before* successful authentication) is
slightly different: A new connect kicks out the oldest client which is
still in "connecting" state. This avoids a easy DoS by unauthenticated

Apparently it is possible for X to send an event to a hidden SDL2
window, leading to SDL2 believing it is now shown. SDL2 will pass the
SDL_WINDOWEVENT_SHOWN message to the application without actually
showing the window; the problem is that the next SDL_ShowWindow() will
be a no-op because SDL2 assumes the window is already shown.
The correct way to react to SDL_WINDOWEVENT_SHOWN would be to clear
scon->hidden (analogous for SDL_WINDOWEVENT_HIDDEN). However, due to the
window not actually being shown, this will somehow not be correct after

The 'QemuConsole' is the input source for handler, we share some
input handlers to process the input events from different QemuConsole.
Normally we only have one set of keyboard, mouse, usbtablet, etc.
The devices have different mask, it's fine to just checking mask to
insure that the handler has the ability to process the event.
I saw we try to bind console to handler in usb/dev-hid.c, but display
always isn't available at that time.
If we have multiseat setup (as Gerd said), we only have 'problem' in
this case. Actually event from different devices have the same effect
for system, it's fine to always use the first available handler
without caring about the console.
For send-key command, we just pass a NULL for console parameter in
calling qemu_input_event_send_key(NULL, ..), but 'input-send-event'
needs to care more devices.
Conclusion:
Generally assigning the special console is meanless, and we can't
directly remove the QMP parameter for compatibility.
So we can make the parameter optional. The parameter might be useful
for some special condition: we have multiple devices without binding
console and they all have the ability(mask) to process events, and
we don't want to use the first one.

so it takes up as little room as possible while still allowing us to use
the keyboard shortcuts for its various operations.
However this shrinking is disregarded on gtk3, so the entire menu bar is

The side effect is that the only keyboard shortcuts that will work in this

To fix this check that bits_per_pixel from the client is one of the

This patch removes support for the cow file format.
Normally we do not break backwards compatibility but in this case there
is no impact and it is the most logical option. Extraordinary claims
require extraordinary evidence so I will show why removing the cow block
driver is the right thing to do.
The cow file format is the disk image format for Usermode Linux, a way
of running a Linux system in userspace. The performance of UML was
never great and it was hacky, but it enjoyed some popularity before
hardware virtualization support became mainstream.
QEMU's block/cow.c is supposed to read this image file format.
Unfortunately the file format was underspecified:
1. Earlier Linux versions used the MAXPATHLEN constant for the backing
filename field. The value of MAXPATHLEN can change, so Linux
switched to a 4096 literal but QEMU has a 1024 literal.
2. Padding was not used on the header struct (both in the Linux kernel
and in QEMU) so the struct layout varied across architectures. In
particular, i386 and x86_64 were different due to int64_t alignment
differences. Linux now uses __attribute__((packed)), QEMU does not.
Therefore:
1. QEMU cow images do not conform to the Linux cow image file format.
2. cow images cannot be shared between different host architectures.
This means QEMU cow images are useless and QEMU has not had bug reports
from users actually hitting these issues.
Let's get rid of this thing, it serves no purpose and no one will be
affected.

we currently have the Nagle algorithm enabled for all outgoing VNC updates.
This may delay sensitive updates as mouse movements or typing in the console.
As we currently prepare all data in a buffer and then send as much as we can
disabling the Nagle algorithm should not cause big trouble. Well established

With this patch the qemu console core stops using PixelFormat and pixman
format codes side-by-side, pixman format code is the primary way to
specify the DisplaySurface format:
* DisplaySurface stops carrying a PixelFormat field.
* qemu_create_displaysurface_from() expects a pixman format now.
Functions to convert PixelFormat to pixman_format_code_t (and back)
exist for those who still use PixelFormat. As PixelFormat allows

Related spice-only bug. We have a fixed 16 MB buffer here, being
presented to the spice-server as qxl video memory in case spice is
used with a non-qxl card. It's also used with qxl in vga mode.
When using display resolutions requiring more than 16 MB of memory we
are going to overflow that buffer. In theory the guest can write,
indirectly via spice-server. The spice-server clears the memory after
setting a new video mode though, triggering a segfault in the overflow
case, so qemu crashes before the guest has a chance to do something
evil.
Fix that by switching to dynamic allocation for the buffer.

In the GTK UI, after changing focus to the qemu monitor Notebook Page,
when restoring focus to the virtual machine page, the keyboard focus is lost
to a hidden GTK widget. Focus can only be restored to the virtual machine by
pressing "tab" or any of the four directional arrow keys.
Clicking in the window or grabbing/ungrabbing input does not restore keyboard
focus to the child widget.

steal keyboard focus on the Page switch event, so that keyboard input

this patch makes the VNC server work correctly if the
server surface and the guest surface have different sizes.
Basically the server surface is adjusted to not exceed VNC_MAX_WIDTH
x VNC_MAX_HEIGHT and additionally the width is rounded up to multiple of
VNC_DIRTY_PIXELS_PER_BIT.
If we have a resolution whose width is not dividable by VNC_DIRTY_PIXELS_PER_BIT
we now get a small black bar on the right of the screen.
If the surface is too big to fit the limits only the upper left area is shown.
On top of that this fixes 2 memory corruption issues:
The first was actually discovered during playing
around with a Windows 7 vServer. During resolution
change in Windows 7 it happens sometimes that Windows
changes to an intermediate resolution where
server_stride % cmp_bytes != 0 (in vnc_refresh_server_surface).
This happens only if width % VNC_DIRTY_PIXELS_PER_BIT != 0.
The second is a theoretical issue, but is maybe exploitable
by the guest. If for some reason the guest surface size is bigger
than VNC_MAX_WIDTH x VNC_MAX_HEIGHT we end up in severe corruption since
this limit is nowhere enforced.

Fix handling of absolute positioning devices, which were basically
unusable for two separate reasons:
(1) as soon as you pressed the left mouse button we would call
CGAssociateMouseAndMouseCursorPosition(FALSE), which means that
the absolute coordinates of the mouse events are never updated
(2) we didn't account for MacOSX coordinate origin being bottom left
rather than top right, and so all the Y values sent to the guest
were inverted
We fix (1) by aligning our behaviour with the SDL UI backend for
absolute devices:
* when the mouse moves into the window we do a grab (which means
hiding the host cursor and sending special keys to the guest)
* when the mouse moves out of the window we un-grab
and fix (2) by doing the correct transformation in the call to
qemu_input_queue_abs().

This patch changes the behavior in the relative mode to be compatible
with other UIs, namely, grabbing the input at the first left click.
It improves the usability a lot; otherwise you have to press ctl-alt-G
or select from menu at each time you want to move the pointer. Also,
the input grab is cleared when the current mode is switched to the
absolute mode.
The automatic reset of the implicit grabbing is needed since the
switching to the absolute mode happens always after the click even on
Gtk. That is, we cannot check whether the absolute mode is already
available at the first click time even though it should have been
switched in X11 input driver side.

The relative pointer tracking mode was still buggy even after the
previous fix of the motion-notify-event since the events are filtered
out when the pointer moves outside the drawing window due to the
boundary check for the absolute mode.
This patch fixes the issue by moving the unnecessary boundary check
into the if block of absolute mode, and keep the coordinate in the
relative mode even if it's outside the drawing area. But this makes
the coordinate (last_x, last_y) possibly pointing to (-1,-1),
introduce a new flag to indicate the last coordinate has been
updated.

The GDK motion-notify-event isn't generated when the pointer goes out
of the target window even if the pointer is grabbed, which essentially
means to lose the pointer tracking in gtk-ui.
Meanwhile the generic "event" signal is sent when the pointer is
grabbed, so we can use this and pick the motion notify events manually
there instead.

There are currently three types of object_property_add_link() callers:
1. The link property may be set at any time.
2. The link property of a DeviceState instance may only be set before

3. The link property may never be set, it is read-only.
Something similar can already be achieved with

a check() argument to object_property_add_link().
Also provide default check() functions for case #1 and #2. Case #3 is

Some object_property_add_link() callers expect property deletion to
unref the link property object. Other callers expect to manage the
refcount themselves. The former are currently broken and therefore leak
the link property object.
This patch adds a flags argument to object_property_add_link() so the
caller can specify which refcount behavior they require. The new
OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flag causes the link pointer to be
unreferenced when the property is deleted.
This fixes refcount leaks in qdev.c, xilinx_axidma.c, xilinx_axienet.c,
s390-virtio-bus.c, virtio-pci.c, virtio-rng.c, and ui/console.c.
Rationale for refcount behavior:
* hw/core/qdev.c
- bus children are explicitly unreferenced, don't interfere
- parent_bus is essentially a read-only property that doesn't hold a
refcount, don't unref
- hotplug_handler is leaked, do unref
* hw/dma/xilinx_axidma.c
- rx stream "dma" links are set using set_link, therefore they
need unref
- tx streams are set using set_link, therefore they need unref
* hw/net/xilinx_axienet.c
- same reasoning as hw/dma/xilinx_axidma.c
* hw/pcmcia/pxa2xx.c
- pxa2xx bypasses set_link and therefore does not use refcounts
* hw/s390x/s390-virtio-bus.c
* hw/virtio/virtio-pci.c
* hw/virtio/virtio-rng.c
* ui/console.c
- set_link is used and there is no explicit unref, do unref

If the surface switch involved a resize, we were doing the redraw
at the old size rather than the new, because the update of
screen.width and screen.height was being done after the setFrame
method calls which triggered a redraw. Normally this isn't very
noticeable because typically after the guest triggers the window
resize it also draws something to it, which will in turn cause
us to redraw. However, the combination of a guest which never
draws to the display and a command line setting of a screen size
larger than the default can reveal odd effects.
Move most of the handling of resizes to the top of the method,
and guard it with a check that the surface size actually changed,
to avoid unnecessary operations (including some user visible ones
like "recenter the window on the screen") if the surface is the
same size as the old one.

causing cyrus-sasl to try to use a /etc/sasl2/spice.conf config file rather

When using -spice sasl on the command line, QEMU properly calls
spice_server_set_sasl_appname() to set the SASL appname as "qemu",
but when using a QXL device without using SPICE, spice_server_init()
is called from qemu_spice_add_interface() without setting the appname

from a .m source using an ObjC compiler, so this specific
rule is unnecessary. Further, it is using the dubious construct
"$(SRC_PATH)/$(obj)" to get at the source directory, which will
break when $(obj) is redefined as part of the preparation for
per-object library support.

Several places in spice-core.c were using either g_malloc+snprintf
or snprintf+g_strdup to achieve the same result as g_strdup_printf.

These include files don't exist for MinGW and are not needed for Linux
(and hopefully for other hosts as well), so remove them.

This is an autogenerated patch using scripts/switch-timer-api.
Switch the entire code base to using the new timer API.
Note this patch may introduce some line length issues.

include/qemu/timer.h has no need to include main-loop.h and
doing so causes an issue for the next patch. Unfortunately
various files assume including timers.h will pull in main-loop.h.
Untangle this mess.

Spice has two display interface implementations: One integrated into
the qxl graphics card, and one generic which can operate with every
qemu-emulated graphics card.
The generic one is activated in case spice is used without qxl. The
logic for that only caught the "-vga qxl" case, "-device qxl-vga" goes
unnoticed. Fix that by adding a check in the spice interface
registration so we'll notice the qxl card no matter how it is created.

Commit 29ae8a4133 ("rdma: introduce
MIG_STATE_NONE and change MIG_STATE_SETUP state transition") changed the
state transitions during migration setup.
Spice used to be notified with MIG_STATE_ACTIVE and it detected this
using migration_is_active(). Spice is now notified with
MIG_STATE_SETUP and migration_is_active() no longer works.
Replace migration_is_active() with migration_in_setup() to fix spice
migration.

This is in fact very simply: When the input in grabbed, everything
should be exclusively passed to the guest - except it has our magic
CTRL-ALT modifier set. Then let GTK filter out those accels that are in
use. When checking the modifier state, we just need to filter out NUM
and CAPS lock.
Note: Filtering based on hard-coded modifiers breaks overriding
accelerators. Needs to be fixed at a later point.

Also use CAIRO_FORMAT_RGB24 unconditionally. DisplaySurfaces will never
ever see 8bpp surfaces. And using CAIRO_FORMAT_RGB16_565 for the 16bpp
case doesn't seem to be a good idea too.
<quote src="/usr/include/cairo/cairo.h">
* @CAIRO_FORMAT_RGB16_565: This format value is deprecated. It has
* never been properly implemented in cairo and should not be used
* by applications. (since 1.2)
