Automatic creation of SCSI controllers for "-drive if=scsi" for x86
machines was quite a bad idea (see description of commit f778a82f0c
for details). This is marked as deprecated since QEMU v2.9.0, and as
far as I know, nobody complained that this is still urgently required
anymore. Time to remove this now.

Replace it with a list of allowed device types, so machines can
easily accept some sysbus devices while rejecting others.
To keep exactly the same behavior as before, the existing
has_dynamic_sysbus=true assignments are replaced with a
TYPE_SYS_BUS_DEVICE entry on the allowed list. Other patches
will replace the TYPE_SYS_BUS_DEVICE entries with more specific
lists of devices.

Linux and Windows need ACPI SRAT table to make memory hotplug work properly,
however currently QEMU doesn't create SRAT table if numa options aren't present
on CLI.
Which breaks both linux and windows guests in certain conditions:
* Windows: won't enable memory hotplug without SRAT table at all
* Linux: if QEMU is started with initial memory all below 4Gb and no SRAT table
present, guest kernel will use nommu DMA ops, which breaks 32bit hw drivers
when memory is hotplugged and guest tries to use it with that drivers.
Fix above issues by automatically creating a numa node when QEMU is started with
memory hotplug enabled but without '-numa' options on CLI.
(PS: auto-create numa node only for new machine types so not to break migration).
Which would provide SRAT table to guests without explicit -numa options on CLI
and would allow:
* Windows: to enable memory hotplug
* Linux: switch to SWIOTLB DMA ops, to bounce DMA transfers to 32bit allocated
buffers that legacy drivers/hw can handle.

pc.h and sysemu/kvm.h are also included from common code (where
CONFIG_KVM is not available), so the #defines that depend on CONFIG_KVM
should not be declared here to avoid that anybody is using them in a
wrong way. Since we're also going to poison CONFIG_KVM for common code,
let's move them to kvm_i386.h instead. Most of the dummy definitions
from sysemu/kvm.h are also unused since the code that uses them is
only compiled for CONFIG_KVM (e.g. target/i386/kvm.c), so the unused

When there are more nodes than available memory to put the minimum
allowed memory by node, all the memory is put on the last node.
This is because we put (ram_size / nb_numa_nodes) &
~((1 << mc->numa_mem_align_shift) - 1); on each node, and in this
case the value is 0. This is particularly true with pseries,
as the memory must be aligned to 256MB.
To avoid this problem, this patch uses an error diffusion algorithm [1]
to distribute equally the memory on nodes.
We introduce numa_auto_assign_ram() function in MachineClass

The legacy function is used with pseries-2.9, pc-q35-2.9 and

Since 2.7 commit (b2a575a Add optionrom compatible with fw_cfg DMA version)
regressed migration during firmware exection time by
abusing fwcfg.dma_enabled property to decide loading
dma version of option rom AND by mistake disabling DMA
for 2.6 and earlier globally instead of only for option rom.
so 2.6 machine type guest is broken when it already runs
firmware in DMA mode but migrated to qemu-2.7(pc-2.6)
at that time;
a) qemu-2.6:pc2.6 (fwcfg.dma=on,firmware=dma,oprom=ioport)
b) qemu-2.7:pc2.6 (fwcfg.dma=off,firmware=ioport,oprom=ioport)
to: a b
from
a OK FAIL
b OK OK
So we currently have broken forward migration from
qemu-2.6 to qemu-2.[789] that however could be fixed
for 2.10 by re-enabling DMA for 2.[56] machine types
and allowing dma capable option rom only since 2.7.
As result qemu should end up with:
c) qemu-2.10:pc2.6 (fwcfg.dma=on,firmware=dma,oprom=ioport)
to: a b c
from
a OK FAIL OK
b OK OK OK
c OK FAIL OK
where forward migration from qemu-2.6 to qemu-2.10 should
work again leaving only qemu-2.[789]:pc-2.6 broken.

Commit "8156d48 pc: allow raising low memory via max-ram-below-4g
option" causes a regression on xen, because it uses a different
memory split.
This patch initializes max-ram-below-4g to zero and leaves the
initialization to the memory initialization functions. That way
they can pick different default values (max-ram-below-4g is zero
still) or use the user supplied value (max-ram-below-4g is non-zero).
Also skip the whole ram split calculation on Xen. xen_ram_init()
does its own split calculation anyway so it is superfluous, also
this way xen_ram_init can actually see whenever max-ram-below-4g
is zero or not.

The isa_bus_irqs function initializes ISA bus IRQ array pointer with specified

Previously the ICH9 LPC bridge model did not have its own IRQs but
only IRQ pointer cache. And same GSI were used for ISA bus and other sources
behind the bridge (PCI, SCI). Hence, the pc_q35_init was only possible place to
setup both ISA bus IRQs and the bridge IRQ cache.
As a result, the call of isa_bus_irqs was made from pc_q35_init.
Now the ICH9 LPC bridge has its own output IRQs which are connected to GSI. The
output IRQs are already used to route IRQs from PCI and SCI.

This patch enables migrating vcpu's TSC rate. If KVM on the
destination machine supports TSC scaling, guest programs will
observe a consistent TSC rate across the migration.
If TSC scaling is not supported on the destination machine, the
migration will not be aborted and QEMU on the destination will
not set vcpu's TSC rate to the migrated value.
If vcpu's TSC rate specified by CPU option 'tsc-freq' on the
destination machine is inconsistent with the migrated TSC rate,
the migration will be aborted.
For backwards compatibility, the migration of vcpu's TSC rate is
disabled on pc-*-2.5 and older machine types.

In 2012, QEMU had a bug where it exposed QEMU version information to the
guest, meaning a QEMU upgrade would expose different hardware to the
guest OS even if the same machine-type is being used.
The bug was fixed by commit 93bfef4c6e, on
all machines up to pc-1.0. But we kept introducing the same bug on all
newer machines since then. That means we are breaking guest ABI every
time QEMU was upgraded.
Fix this by setting the hw_version on all PC machines, making sure the
hardware won't change when upgrading QEMU.
Note that QEMU_VERSION was "1.0" in QEMU 1.0, but starting on QEMU
1.1.0, it started following the "x.y.0" pattern. We have to follow it,
to make sure we use the right QEMU_VERSION string from each QEMU
release.
The 2.5 machine classes could have hw_version unset, because the default
value for qemu_get_version() is QEMU_VERSION. But I decided to set it
explicitly to QEMU_VERSION so we don't forget to update it to "2.5.0"
after we release 2.5.0 and create a 2.6 machine class.

The "no_floppy = 1" machine class setting causes "default_floppy" in
main() to become zero. Consequently, default_drive() will not call
drive_add() and drive_new() for IF_FLOPPY, index=0, meaning that no
default floppy drive will be created for the virtual machine. In that
case, board code should also not insist on the creation of the
board-default FDC.
The board-default FDC will still be created if the user requests a floppy
drive with "-drive if=floppy".
Additionally, separate FDCs can be specified manually with "-device
isa-fdc". They allow the
-device isa-fdc,driveA=...
syntax that is more flexible than the one required by the board-default
FDC:
-global isa-fdc.driveA=...
This patch doesn't change the behavior observably, as all Q35 machine
types have "no_floppy = 0".

This patch introduces no observable change, but it allows the callers of
pc_basic_device_init(), ie. pc_init1() and pc_q35_init(), to request (or
not request) the creation of the FDC explicitly.
At the moment both callers pass constant create_fdctrl=true (hence no
observable change).
Assuming a board passes create_fdctrl=false, "floppy" will be NULL on
output, and (beyond the FDC not being created) that NULL will be passed on
to pc_cmos_init(). Luckily, pc_cmos_init() already handles that case.

Define a MACHINE_OPTIONS macro for each PC machine, and move every field
inside the QEMUMachine structs to the macros, except for name, init, and
compat_props.
This also ensures that all MACHINE_OPTIONS inherit the fields from the
next version, so their definitions carry only the changes that exist
between one version and the next one.
Comments about specific cases:
pc-*-2.1:
Existing PC_*_2_1_MACHINE_OPTIONS macros were defined as:
PC_*_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_machine_opts = "firmware=bios-256k.bin"
PC_*_2_2_MACHINE_OPTIONS is:
PC_*_2_3_MACHINE_OPTIONS
which is expanded to:
PC_*_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_machine_opts = "firmware=bios-256k.bin",
.default_display = "std"
The only difference between 2_1 and 2_2 is .default_display, that's why
we didn't reuse PC_*_2_2_MACHINE_OPTIONS. The good news is that having
multiple initializers for a field is allowed by C99, and the last
initializer overrides the previous ones.
So we can reuse the 2_2 macro in 2_1 and define PC_*_2_1_MACHINE_OPTIONS
as:
PC_*_2_2_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_display = NULL
pc-*-1.7:
PC_*_1_7_MACHINE_OPTIONS was defined as:
PC_*_MACHINE_OPTIONS
PC_*_2_0_MACHINE_OPTIONS is defined as:
PC_*_2_1_MACHINE_OPTIONS
which is expanded to:
PC_*_2_2_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_display = NULL
which is expanded to:
PC_*_2_3_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_display = NULL
which is expanded to:
PC_*_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_machine_opts = "firmware=bios-256k.bin",
.default_display = "std",
.default_display = NULL /* overrides the previous line */
So, the only difference between PC_*_1_7_MACHINE_OPTIONS and
PC_*_2_0_MACHINE_OPTIONS is .default_machine_opts (as .default_display
is not explicitly set by PC_*_MACHINE_OPTIONS so it is NULL).
So we can keep the macro reuse pattern and define
PC_*_2_0_MACHINE_OPTIONS as:
PC_*_2_0_MACHINE_OPTIONS,
.default_machine_opts = NULL
pc-*-2.4 (alias and is_default fields):
Set alias and is_default fields inside the 2.4 MACHINE_OPTIONS macro,
and clear it in the 2.3 macro (that reuses the 2.4 macro).
hw_machine:
As all the machines older than v1.0 set hw_version explicitly, we can
safely move the field to the MACHINE_OPTIONS macros without affecting
the other versions that reuse them.
init function:
Some machines had the init function set inside the MACHINE_OPTIONS
macro. Move it to the QEMUMachine declaration, to keep it consistent
with the other machines.

have the HLE and RTM features, and some that don't have the HLE and RTM
features. On both cases people may be willing to use the pc-*-2.3

So instead of making the CPU model results confusing by making it depend
on the machine-type, keep HLE and RTM on the existing Haswell and
Broadwell CPU models. The plan is to introduce "Haswell-noTSX" and
"Broadwell-noTSX" CPU models later, for people who have CPUs that don't

Differently from older versions, SMBIOS version 2.6 is explicit about
the encoding of UUID fields:
> Although RFC 4122 recommends network byte order for all fields, the PC
> industry (including the ACPI, UEFI, and Microsoft specifications) has
> consistently used little-endian byte encoding for the first three fields:
> time_low, time_mid, time_hi_and_version. The same encoding, also known as

This patch adds the 'units_per_default_bus' property which
allows individual boards to declare their desired
index => (bus,unit) mapping for their default HBA, so that
boards such as Q35 can specify that its default if_ide HBA,
AHCI, only accepts one unit per bus.
This property only overrides the mapping for drives matching
the block_default_type interface.
This patch also adds this property to *all* past and present
Q35 machine types. This retroactive addition is justified
because the previous erroneous index=>(bus,unit) mappings
caused by lack of such a property were not utilized due to
lack of initialization code in the Q35 init routine.
Further, semantically, the Q35 board type has always had the
property that its default HBA, AHCI, only accepts one unit per
bus. The new code added to add devices to drives relies upon
the accuracy of this mapping. Thus, the property is applied
retroactively to reduce complexity of allowing IDE HBAs with
different units per bus.
Examples:
Prior to this patch, all IDE HBAs were assumed to use 2 units
per bus (Master, Slave). When using Q35 and AHCI, however, we
only allow one unit per bus.
-hdb foo.qcow2 would become index=1, or bus=0,unit=1.
-hdd foo.qcow2 would become index=3, or bus=1,unit=1.
-drive file=foo.qcow2,index=5 becomes bus=2,unit=1.
These are invalid for AHCI. They now become, under Q35 only:
-hdb foo.qcow2 --> index=1, bus=1, unit=0.
-hdd foo.qcow2 --> index=3, bus=3, unit=0.
-drive file=foo.qcow2,index=5 --> bus=5,unit=0.
The mapping is adjusted based on the fact that the default IF
for the Q35 machine type is IF_IDE, and units-per-default-bus
overrides the IDE mapping from its default of 2 units per bus
to just 1 unit per bus.

Changing the ACPI table size causes migration to break, and the memory
hotplug work opened our eyes on how horribly we were breaking things in
2.0 already.
The ACPI table size is rounded to the next 4k, which one would think
gives some headroom. In practice this is not the case, because the user
can control the ACPI table size (each CPU adds 97 bytes to the SSDT and
8 to the MADT) and so some "-smp" values will break the 4k boundary and
fail to migrate. Similarly, PCI bridges add ~1870 bytes to the SSDT.
This patch concerns itself with fixing migration from QEMU 2.0. It
computes the payload size of QEMU 2.0 and always uses that one.
The previous patch shrunk the ACPI tables enough that the QEMU 2.0 size
should always be enough; non-AML tables can change depending on the
configuration (especially MADT, SRAT, HPET) but they remain the same
between QEMU 2.0 and 2.1, so we only compute our padding based on the
sizes of the SSDT and DSDT.
Migration from QEMU 1.7 should work for guests that have a number of CPUs
other than 12, 13, 14, 54, 55, 56, 97, 98, 139, 140. It was already
broken from QEMU 1.7 to QEMU 2.0 in the same way, though.
Even with this patch, QEMU 1.7 and 2.0 have two different ideas of
"-M pc-i440fx-2.0" when there are PCI bridges. Igor sent a patch to
adopt the QEMU 1.7 definition. I think distributions should apply
it if they move directly from QEMU 1.7 to 2.1+ without ever packaging
version 2.0.

For each compat property on PC_Q35_COMPAT_*, there are only two
possibilities:
* If the device is never instantiated when using a machine other than
pc-q35, then the compat property can be safely added to
PC_COMPAT_*;
* If the device can be instantiated when using a machine other than
pc-q35, that means the other machines also need the compat property
to be set.
That means we don't need separate PC_Q35_COMPAT_* macros at all, today.
The hpet.hpet-intcap case is interesting: piix and q35 do have something
that emulates different defaults, but the machine-specific default is
applied _after_ compat_props are applied, by simply checking if the
property is zero (which is the real default on the hpet code).
The hpet.hpet-intcap=0x4 compat property can (should?) be applied to
piix too, because 0x4 was the default on both piix and q35 before the
hpet-intcap property was introduced.
Now, if one day we change the default HPET intcap on one of the PC
machine-types again, we may want to introduce PC_{Q35,I440FX}_COMPAT
macros. But while we don't need that, we can keep the code simple.

RAM MRs including ROM files in FW CFGs are created

This becomes problematic if these names are
supplied by user, since the basename might not
be unique.
There are two cases we care about:
- option-rom flag.
- option ROM for devices. This triggers e.g. when
using rombar=0.
At the moment we get an assert. E.g
qemu -option-rom /usr/share/ipxe/8086100e.rom -option-rom
/usr/share/ipxe.efi/8086100e.rom
RAMBlock "/rom@genroms/8086100e.rom" already registered, abort!
This is a regression from 1.6.

On q35, IRQ2/8 can be reserved for hpet timer 0/1. And pin 16~23

property to do that.
Consider the compat and piix/q35, we finally have the following
value for intcap: For piix, hpet's intcap is hard coded as IRQ2.
For pc-q35-1.7 and earlier, we use IRQ2 for compat reason. Otherwise

This causes two slight backwards-incompatibilities between "-M pc-1.5"
and 1.5's "-M pc":
(1) a fw_cfg file is removed with this patch. This is only a problem
if migration stops the virtual machine exactly during fw_cfg enumeration.
(2) after migration, a VM created without an explicit "-device pvpanic"
will stop reporting panics to management.
The first problem only occurs if migration is done at a very, very
early point (and I'm not sure it can happen in practice for reasonable-size
VMs, since it will likely take more time to send the RAM to destination,
than it will take for BIOS to scan fw_cfg).
The second problem only occurs if the guest panics _and_ has a guest
driver _and_ management knows to look at the crash event, so it is
mostly theoretical at this point in time.
Thus keep the code simple, and pretend it was never broken.

This adds C code for generating ACPI tables at runtime,
imported from seabios git tree
commit 51684b7ced75fb76776e8ee84833fcfb6ecf12dd
Although ACPI tables come from a system BIOS on real hw,
it makes sense that the ACPI tables are coupled with the
virtual machine, since they have to abstract the x86 machine to
the OS's.
This is widely desired as a way to avoid the churn
and proliferation of QEMU-specific interfaces
associated with ACPI tables in bios code.
Notes:
As BIOS can reprogram devices prior to loading
ACPI tables, we pre-format ACPI tables but defer loading
hardware configuration there until tables are loaded.
The code structure was intentionally kept as close
to the seabios original as possible, to simplify
comparison and making sure we didn't lose anything
in translation.
Minor code duplication results, to help ensure there are no functional
regressions, I think it's better to merge it like this and do more code
changes in follow-up patches.
Cross-version compatibility concerns have been addressed:
ACPI tables are exposed to guest as FW_CFG entries.
When running with -M 1.5 and older, this patch disables ACPI
table generation, and doesn't expose ACPI
tables to guest.
As table content is likely to change over time,
the following measures are taken to simplify
cross-version migration:
- All tables besides the RSDP are packed in a single FW CFG entry.
This entry size is currently 23K. We round it up to 64K
to avoid too much churn there.
- Tables are placed in special ROM blob (not mapped into guest memory)
which is automatically migrated together with the guest, same
as BIOS code.
- Offsets where hardware configuration is loaded in ACPI tables
are also migrated, this is in case future ACPI changes make us
rearrange the tables in memory.
This patch reuses some code from SeaBIOS, which was originally under
LGPLv2 and then relicensed to GPLv3 or LGPLv3, in QEMU under GPLv2+. This
relicensing has been acked by all contributors that had contributed to the

emulated (RDTR is only used to validate RADV, according to the e1000 specs).
RADV, TADV, TIDV and RDTR registers make up the older e1000 mitigation
mechanism and would need a timer each to be completely emulated. However,
a single timer has been used in order to reach a good compromise between
emulation accuracy and simplicity/efficiency.
The implemented mechanism can be enabled/disabled specifying the command
line e1000-specific boolean parameter "mitigation", e.g.
qemu-system-x86_64 -device e1000,mitigation=on,... ...

We have a lot of code duplication between machine types,
this increases with each new machine type
and each new field.
This has already introduced a minor bug: description
for pc-1.3 says "Standard PC" while description for
pc-1.4 is "Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996)"
which makes you think 1.3 is somehow more standard,
or newer, while in fact it's a revision of the same PC.
This patch addresses this issue by using macros, along
the lines used by PC_COMPAT_X_X - only for
non-property options.
The approach can extend to non-PC machine types.

We set default boot order "cad" in every single machine definition
except "pseries" and "moxiesim", even though very few boards actually
care for boot order, and "cad" makes sense for even fewer.
Machines that care:
* pc and its variants
Accept up to three letters 'a', 'b' (undocumented alias for 'a'),
'c', 'd' and 'n'. Reject all others (fatal with -boot).
* nseries (n800, n810)
Check whether order starts with 'n'. Silently ignored otherwise.
* prep, g3beige, mac99
Extract the first character the machine understands (subset of
'a'..'f'). Silently ignored otherwise.
* spapr
Accept an arbitrary string (vl.c restricts it to contain only
'a'..'p', no duplicates).
* sun4[mdc]
Use the first character. Silently ignored otherwise.
Strip characters these machines ignore from their default boot order.
For all other machines, remove the unused default boot order
alltogether.
Note that my rename of QEMUMachine member boot_order to
default_boot_order and QEMUMachineInitArgs member boot_device to
boot_order has a welcome side effect: it makes every use of boot
orders visible in this patch, for easy review.

ROM files that are put in FW CFG are copied to guest ram, by BIOS, but
they are not backed by RAM so they don't get migrated.
Each time we change two bytes in such a ROM this breaks cross-version
migration: since we can migrate after BIOS has read the first byte but
before it has read the second one, getting an inconsistent state.
Future-proof this by creating, for each such ROM,
an MR serving as the backing store.
This MR is never mapped into guest memory, but it's registered
as RAM so it's migrated with the guest.
Naturally, this only helps for -M 1.7 and up, older machine types
will still have the cross-version migration bug.
Luckily the race window for the problem to trigger is very small,
which is also likely why we didn't notice the cross-version
migration bug in testing yet.

(e.g. around winXP boot crashes). So it's safest to disable that
interface for 1.6 machine types for now, leave it on for 1.7

The CPUID model values on Conroe, Penryn, and Nehalem are too
conservative and don't reflect the values found on real Conroe, Penryn,
and Nehalem CPUs.
This causes at least one known problems: Windows XP disables sysenter
when (family == 6 && model <= 2), but Skype tries to use the sysenter
instruction anyway because it is reported as available on CPUID, making
it crash.
This patch sets appropriate model values that correspond to real Conroe,
