The i440fx and Q35 machine types are both hardcoded to use the
legacy SMBIOS 2.1 (32-bit) entry point. This is a sensible
conservative choice because SeaBIOS only supports SMBIOS 2.1
EDK2, however, can also support SMBIOS 3.0 (64-bit) entry points,
and QEMU already uses this on the ARM virt machine type.
This adds a property to allow the choice of SMBIOS entry point
versions For example to opt in to 64-bit SMBIOS entry point:
$QEMU -machine q35,smbios-entry-point-type=64

Rename the enums to match the naming style used by QAPI, and to
use "32" and "64" instead of "20" and "31". This will allow us
to more easily move the enum to the QAPI schema later.
About the naming choice: "SMBIOS 2.1 entry point"/"SMBIOS 3.0
entry point" and "32-bit entry point"/"64-bit entry point" are
synonymous in the SMBIOS specification. However, the phrases
"32-bit entry point" and "64-bit entry point" are used more often.
The new names also avoid confusion between the entry point format
and the actual SMBIOS version reported in the entry point
structure. For example: currently the 32-bit entry point
actually report SMBIOS 2.8 support, not 2.1.

To solve issues [1-2] the Hot Plug Capable bit in PCIe Slots will be
turned on, while the switch to ACPI Hot-plug will be done in the
DSDT table.
Introducing 'x-keep-native-hpc' property disables the HPC bit only
in 6.1 and as a result keeps the forced 'reserve-io' on
pcie-root-ports in 6.1 too.

Mark property as experimental/internal adding 'x-' prefix.
Property was introduced in 6.1 and it should have provided
ability to turn on native PCIE hotplug on port even when
ACPI PCI hotplug is in use is user explicitly sets property
on CLI. However that never worked since slot is wired to
ACPI hotplug controller.
Another non-intended usecase: disable native hotplug on slot
when APCI based hotplug is disabled, which works but slot has
'hotplug' property for this taks.
It should be relatively safe to rename it to experimental
as no users should exist for it and given that the property
is broken we don't really want to leave it around for much
longer lest users start using it.

In the real SMP hardware topology world, it's much more likely that
we have high cores-per-socket counts and few sockets totally. While
the current preference of sockets over cores in smp parsing results
in a virtual cpu topology with low cores-per-sockets counts and a
large number of sockets, which is just contrary to the real world.
Given that it is better to make the virtual cpu topology be more
reflective of the real world and also for the sake of compatibility,
we start to prefer cores over sockets over threads in smp parsing
since machine type 6.2 for different arches.
In this patch, a boolean "smp_prefer_sockets" is added, and we only
enable the old preference on older machines and enable the new one
since type 6.2 for all arches by using the machine compat mechanism.

Now that we have "acpi-pci-hotplug-with-bridge-support" PIIX4 PM property being
used for both q35 and i440fx machine types, it is better that we defined this
property string at a single place within a header file like other PIIX4
properties. We can then use this single definition at all the places that needs
it instead of duplicating the string everywhere. While at it, this change also
adds a definition for "acpi-root-pci-hotplug" PIIX4 PM property and uses
this definition at all places that were formally using the string value.

Instead of changing the hot-plug type in _OSC register, do not
set the 'Hot-Plug Capable' flag. This way guest will choose ACPI
hot-plug if it is preferred and leave the option to use SHPC with
pcie-pci-bridge.
The ability to control hot-plug for each downstream port is retained,
while 'hotplug=off' on the port means all hot-plug types are disabled.

After fixing the _UID value for the primary PCI root bridge in
af1b80ae it was discovered that this change updates Windows
configuration in an incompatible way causing network configuration
failure unless DHCP is used. More details provided on the list:

This change reverts the _UID update from 1 to 0 for q35 and i440fx
VMs before version 5.2 to maintain the original behaviour when
upgrading.

QEMU's kvmclock device is only created when KVM PV feature bits for
kvmclock (KVM_FEATURE_CLOCKSOURCE/KVM_FEATURE_CLOCKSOURCE2) are
exposed to the guest. With 'kvm=off' cpu flag the device is not
created and we don't call KVM_GET_CLOCK/KVM_SET_CLOCK upon migration.
It was reported that without these call at least Hyper-V TSC page
clocksouce (which can be enabled independently) gets broken after
migration.
Switch to creating kvmclock QEMU device unconditionally, it seems
to always make sense to call KVM_GET_CLOCK/KVM_SET_CLOCK on migration.
Use KVM_CAP_ADJUST_CLOCK check instead of CPUID feature bits.

Xen accelerator requires specific changes to a machine to be able
to use it. See for example the 'Xen PC' machine configure its PCI
bus calling pc_xen_hvm_init_pci(). There is no 'Xen Q35' machine
declared. This code was probably added while introducing the Q35
machine, based on the existing PC machine (see commit df2d8b3ed4
"Introduce q35 pc based chipset emulator"). Remove the unreachable
code to simplify this file.

Users of existing VMs, wishing to preserve the same RAM distribution,
should configure it explicitly using ``-numa node,memdev`` options.
Current RAM distribution can be retrieved using HMP command
`info numa` and if separate memory devices (pc|nv-dimm) are present
use `info memory-device` and subtract device memory from output of
`info numa`.

Let's auto-enable it also when maxmem is specified but no slots are
defined. This will result in us properly creating ACPI srat tables,
indicating the maximum possible PFN to the guest OS. Based on this, e.g.,
Linux will enable the swiotlb properly.
This avoids having to manually force the switolb on (swiotlb=force) in
Linux in case we're booting only using DMA memory (e.g., 2GB on x86-64),
and virtio-mem adds memory later on that really needs the swiotlb to be
used for DMA.
Let's take care of backwards compatibility if somebody has a setup that
specifies "maxram" without "slots".

The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with
the same name already exists. Since our property names are all
hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to
handle it is passing &error_abort.
Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which
additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is
also under program control, so this is a programming error, too.
We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass
&error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles
errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers.
The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring
programming errors is a bad idea.
Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API.
The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a
pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the
latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the
first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second

are wrong that way.
When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting
users pick the argument is a bad idea.
Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead.
There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming
error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and
undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there.
Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(),
and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add().

This patch makes IO base and size configurable to create NPIO AML for
ACPI NFIT. Since a different architecture like AArch64 does not use
port-mapped IO, a configurable IO base is required to create correct

5.0 machine type uses 4.2 compats. This seems to be incorrect, since
the latests machine type by now is 5.0 and it should use its own
compat or shouldn't use any relying on the defaults.
Seems, like this appeared because of some problems on merge/rebase.

Virtio spec 1.1 (and earlier), 5.2.5.2 Driver Requirements: Device
Initialization:
"Devices SHOULD always offer VIRTIO_BLK_F_FLUSH, and MUST offer it if
they offer VIRTIO_BLK_F_CONFIG_WCE"
Currently F_CONFIG_WCE and F_WCE are not connected to each other.
Qemu will advertise F_CONFIG_WCE if config-wce argument is
set for virtio-blk device. And F_WCE is advertised only if
underlying block backend actually has it's caching enabled.
Fix this by advertising F_WCE if F_CONFIG_WCE is also advertised.
To preserve backwards compatibility with newer machine types make this
behaviour governed by "x-enable-wce-if-config-wce" virtio-blk-device
property and introduce hw_compat_4_2 with new property being off by
default for all machine types <= 4.2 (but don't introduce 4.3
machine type itself yet).

Attempting to migrate a VM using the microvm machine class results in the source

The access to the machine class returned by MACHINE_GET_CLASS() in
tsc_khz_needed() is crashing as it is trying to dereference a different
type of machine class object (TYPE_PC_MACHINE) to that of this microVM.
This can be resolved by extending the changes in the following commit
f0bb276bf8 ("hw/i386: split PCMachineState deriving X86MachineState from it")
and moving the save_tsc_khz field in PCMachineClass to X86MachineClass.

This is so I2C devices can be found in the ACPI namespace. Currently
that's only IPMI, but devices can be easily added now.
Adding the devices required some PCI information, and the bus itself
to be added to the PCMachineState structure.
Note that this only works on Q35, the ACPI for PIIX4 is not capable
of handling an SMBus device.

hw/boards.h pulls in almost 60 headers. The less we include it into
headers, the better. As a first step, drop superfluous inclusions,
and downgrade some more to what's actually needed. Gets rid of just
one inclusion into a header.

In my "build everything" tree, changing hw/qdev-properties.h triggers
a recompile of some 2700 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and
objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h).
Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h)
actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there
instead.
hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h
and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h.
Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h.
While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h.
Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects.

This will make unversioned CPU models behavior depend on the
machine type:
* "pc-*-4.0" and older will not report them as aliases.
This is done to keep compatibility with older QEMU versions
after management software starts translating aliases.
* "pc-*-4.1" will translate unversioned CPU models to -v1.
This is done to keep compatibility with existing management
software, that still relies on CPU model runnability promises.
* "none" will translate unversioned CPU models to their latest
version. This is planned become the default in future machine
types (probably in pc-*-4.3).

Commit c87759ce87 fixed a regression affecting pc-q35 machines by
introducing a new pc-q35-4.0.1 machine version to be used instead
of pc-q35-4.0. The only purpose was to revert the default behaviour
of not using split irqchip, but the change also introduced the usual
hw_compat and pc_compat bits, and wired them for pc-q35 only.
This raises questions when it comes to add new compat properties for
4.0* machine versions of any architecture. Where to add them ? In
4.0, 4.0.1 or both ? Error prone. Another possibility would be to teach
all other architectures about 4.0.1. This solution isn't satisfying,
especially since this is a pc-q35 specific issue.
It turns out that the split irqchip default is handled in the machine
option function and doesn't involve compat lists at all.
Drop all the 4.0.1 compat lists and use the 4.0 ones instead in the 4.0.1
machine option function.
Move the compat props that were added to the 4.0.1 since c87759ce87 to
4.0.
Even if only hw_compat_4_0_1 had an impact on other architectures,
drop pc_compat_4_0_1 as well for consistency.

Commit b2fc91db84 ("q35: set split kernel irqchip as default") changed
the default for the pc-q35-4.0 machine type to use split irqchip, which
turned out to have disasterous effects on vfio-pci INTx support. KVM
resampling irqfds are registered for handling these interrupts, but
these are non-functional in split irqchip mode. We can't simply test
for split irqchip in QEMU as userspace handling of this interrupt is a
significant performance regression versus KVM handling (GeForce GPUs
assigned to Windows VMs are non-functional without forcing MSI mode or
re-enabling kernel irqchip).
The resolution is to revert the change in default irqchip mode in the
pc-q35-4.1 machine and create a pc-q35-4.0.1 machine for the 4.0-stable
branch. The qemu-q35-4.0 machine type should not be used in vfio-pci
configurations for devices requiring legacy INTx support without
explicitly modifying the VM configuration to use kernel irqchip.

As NVDIMM support is looming for ARM and SPAPR, let's
move the acpi_nvdimm_state to the generic machine struct
instead of duplicating the same code in several machines.
It is also renamed into nvdimms_state and becomes a pointer.
nvdimm and nvdimm-persistence become generic machine options.
They become guarded by a nvdimm_supported machine class member.
We also add a description for those options.

Migration capability is being added for pm_smbus and SMBus devices.
This change will allow backwards compatibility to be kept when
migrating back to an old qemu version. Add a bool to the machine
class tho keep smbus migration from happening. Future changes
will use this.

This function is only needed when Q35 is in use. Moving it to
the same file that uses it lets you disable the entire USB
subsystem in x86_64-softmmu.mak; of course doing that will

Starting from QEMU 4.0, let's specify "split" as the default value for
kernel-irqchip.
So for QEMU>=4.0 we'll have: allowed=Y,required=N,split=Y
for QEMU<=3.1 we'll have: allowed=Y,required=N,split=N
(omitting all the "kernel_irqchip_" prefix)
Note that this will let the default q35 machine type to depend on
Linux version 4.4 or newer because that's where split irqchip is
introduced in kernel. But it's fine since we're boosting supported
Linux version for QEMU 4.0 to around Linux 4.5. For more information

We have a couple of PC_COMPAT_3_0, so we should have 3.1 PC machines,
and update the 3.0 machines to make use of those.

A link property can be set during creation, with
object_property_add_link() and later with object_property_set_link().
add_link() doesn't add a reference to the target object, while
set_link() does.
Furthemore, OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flags, set during add_link,
says whether a reference must be released when the property is destroyed.
This can lead to leaks if the property was later set_link(), as the
added reference is never released.
Instead, rename OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE to OBJ_PROP_LINK_STRONG
and use that has an indication on how the link handle reference
management in set_link().

QEMU 3.0 enables strict check for compression & decompression to
make the migration more robust, that depends on the source to fix
the internal design which triggers the unexpected error conditions
To make it work for migrating old version QEMU to 2.13 QEMU, we
introduce this parameter to disable the error check on the
destination which is the default behavior of the machine type
which is older than 2.13, alternately, the strict check can be
enabled explicitly as followings:
-M pc-q35-2.11 -global migration.decompress-error-check=true

The e1000 NIC is getting old and is not a very good default for a
PCIe machine type. Change it to e1000e, which should be supported
by a good number of guests.
In particular, drivers for 82574 were added first to Linux 2.6.27 (2008)
and Windows 2008 R2. This does mean that Windows 2008 will not work
anymore with Q35 machine types and a default "-net nic -net xxx" network
configuration; it did work before because it does have an AHCI driver.
However, Windows 2008 has been declared out of main stream support
in 2015. It will get out of extended support in 2020. Windows 2008
R2 has the same end of support dates and, since the two are basically
Vista vs. Windows 7, R2 probably is more popular.
