The option -G of usermod command will remove user from other groups
not listed, i.e.: $USER will belong only to group 'docker' after
following the documentation as is.
From usermod(8) manual page:
If the user is currently a member of a group which is not listed,
the user will be removed from the group. This behaviour can be
changed via the -a option, which appends the user to the current
supplementary group list.
This patch improves the situation by adding the -a option to the
usermod command, which will just append user to the supplementary
group list.

The dtrace systemtap trace backend for QEMU is very powerful but it is
also somewhat unfriendly to users who aren't familiar with systemtap,
or who don't need its power right now.
stap -e "....some strange script...."
The 'log' backend for QEMU by comparison is very crude but incredibly
easy to use:
$ qemu -d trace:qio* ...some args...

This commit introduces a way to do simple printf style logging of probe
points using systemtap. In particular it creates another set of tapsets,
one per emulator:
/usr/share/systemtap/tapset/qemu-*-log.stp
These pre-define probe functions which simply call printf() on their
arguments. The printf() format string is taken from the normal
trace-events files, with a little munging to the format specifiers
to cope with systemtap's more restrictive syntax.
With this you can now do
$ stap -e 'probe qemu.system.x86_64.log.qio*{}'

22806@1547735341399976816 qio_task_thread_run Task thread run task=0x56135cd66eb0
We go one step further though and introduce a 'qemu-trace-stap' tool to
make this even easier
$ qemu-trace-stap run qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
22806@1547735341399856820 qio_channel_socket_new Socket new ioc=0x56135d1d7c00

22806@1547735341399976816 qio_task_thread_run Task thread run task=0x56135cd66eb0
This tool is clever in that it will automatically change the
SYSTEMTAP_TAPSET env variable to point to the directory containing the
right set of probes for the QEMU binary path you give it. This is useful
if you have QEMU installed in /usr but are trying to test and trace a
binary in /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git. In that case you'd do
$ qemu-trace-stap run /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
And it'll make sure /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/share/systemtap/tapset
is used for the trace session
The 'qemu-trace-stap' script takes a verbose arg so you can understand
what it is running
$ qemu-trace-stap run /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
Using tapset dir '/home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/share/systemtap/tapset' for binary '/home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64'
Compiling script 'probe qemu.system.x86_64.log.qio* {}'
Running script, <Ctrl>-c to quit
...trace output...
It can enable multiple probes at once
$ qemu-trace-stap run qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*' 'qcrypto*' 'buffer*'
By default it monitors all existing running processes and all future
launched proceses. This can be restricted to a specific PID using the
--pid arg
$ qemu-trace-stap run --pid 2532 qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
Finally if you can't remember what probes are valid it can tell you
$ qemu-trace-stap list qemu-system-x86_64
ahci_check_irq
ahci_cmd_done
ahci_dma_prepare_buf
ahci_dma_prepare_buf_fail
ahci_dma_rw_buf

Or list just those matching a prefix pattern
$ qemu-trace-stap list -v qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'

The qapi_event_send_FOO() functions emit events like this:
QMPEventFuncEmit emit;
emit = qmp_event_get_func_emit();
if (!emit) {
return;
}
qmp = qmp_event_build_dict("FOO");
[put event arguments into @qmp...]
emit(QAPI_EVENT_FOO, qmp);
The value of qmp_event_get_func_emit() depends only on the program:
* In qemu-system-FOO, it's always monitor_qapi_event_queue.
* In tests/test-qmp-event, it's always event_test_emit.
* In all other programs, it's always null.
This is exactly the kind of dependence the linker is supposed to
resolve; we don't actually need an indirection.
Note that things would fall apart if we linked more than one QAPI
schema into a single program: each set of qapi_event_send_FOO() uses
its own event enumeration, yet they share a single emit function.
Which takes the event enumeration as an argument. Which one if
there's more than one?
More seriously: how does this work even now? qemu-system-FOO wants
QAPIEvent, and passes a function taking that to
qmp_event_set_func_emit(). test-qmp-event wants test_QAPIEvent, and
passes a function taking that to qmp_event_set_func_emit().
It works by type trickery, of course:
typedef void (*QMPEventFuncEmit)(unsigned event, QDict *dict);
void qmp_event_set_func_emit(QMPEventFuncEmit emit);
QMPEventFuncEmit qmp_event_get_func_emit(void);
We use unsigned instead of the enumeration type. Relies on both
enumerations boiling down to unsigned, which happens to be true for
the compilers we use.
Clean this up as follows:
* Generate qapi_event_send_FOO() that call PREFIX_qapi_event_emit()
instead of the value of qmp_event_set_func_emit().
* Generate a prototype for PREFIX_qapi_event_emit() into
qapi-events.h.
* PREFIX_ is empty for qapi/qapi-schema.json, and test_ for
tests/qapi-schema/qapi-schema-test.json. It's qga_ for
qga/qapi-schema.json, and doc-good- for
tests/qapi-schema/doc-good.json, but those don't define any events.
* Rename monitor_qapi_event_queue() to qapi_event_emit() instead of
passing it to qmp_event_set_func_emit(). This takes care of
qemu-system-FOO.
* Rename event_test_emit() to test_qapi_event_emit() instead of
passing it to qmp_event_set_func_emit(). This takes care of
tests/test-qmp-event.
* Add a qapi_event_emit() that does nothing to stubs/monitor.c. This
takes care of all other programs that link code emitting QMP events.
* Drop qmp_event_set_func_emit(), qmp_event_get_func_emit().

This parameter has no effect, fix it.
The function init_dev_caps sets the front-end's max-sge to MAX_SGE. Then
it checks backend's max-sge and adjust it accordingly (we can't send
more than what the device supports).
On send and recv we need to make sure the num_sge in the WQE does not
exceeds the backend device capability.
This check is done in pvrdma level so check on rdma level is deleted.

The TPM Physical Presence interface consists of an ACPI part, a shared
memory part, and code in the firmware. Users can send messages to the
firmware by writing a code into the shared memory through invoking the
ACPI code. When a reboot happens, the firmware looks for the code and
acts on it by sending sequences of commands to the TPM.
This patch adds the ACPI code. It is similar to the one in EDK2 but doesn't
assume that SMIs are necessary to use. It uses a similar datastructure for
the shared memory as EDK2 does so that EDK2 and SeaBIOS could both make use
of it. I extended the shared memory data structure with an array of 256
bytes, one for each code that could be implemented. The array contains
flags describing the individual codes. This decouples the ACPI implementation
from the firmware implementation.
The underlying TCG specification is accessible from the following page.
https://trustedcomputinggroup.org/tcg-physical-presence-interface-specification/
This patch implements version 1.30.

It can be useful to figure out which NBD protocol features are
exposed by a server, as well as what features a client will
take advantage of if available, for a given qemu release. It's
not always precise to base features on version numbers (thanks
to downstream backports), but any documentation is better than
making users search through git logs themselves.
This patch originally stemmed from a request to document that
pristine 3.0 has a known bug where NBD_OPT_LIST_META_CONTEXT
with 0 queries forgot to advertise an available
"qemu:dirty-bitmap" context, but documenting bugs like this (or
the fact that 3.0 also botched NBD_CMD_CACHE) gets to be too
much details, especially since buggy releases will be less
likely connection targets over time. Instead, I chose to just
remind users to check stable release branches.

QAPISchemaMember gains .ifcond for enum members: inherited classes,
such as QAPISchemaObjectTypeMember, will thus have an ifcond member
after this (those different types will also use the .ifcond to store
the condition and generate conditional code in the following patches).
The generated code remains unconditional for now. Later patches
generate the conditionals.

When a QMP client sends in-band commands more quickly that we can
process them, we can either queue them without limit (QUEUE), drop
commands when the queue is full (DROP), or suspend receiving commands
when the queue is full (SUSPEND). None of them is ideal:
* QUEUE lets a misbehaving client make QEMU eat memory without bounds.
Not such a hot idea.
* With DROP, the client has to cope with dropped in-band commands. To
inform the client, we send a COMMAND_DROPPED event then. The event is
flawed by design in two ways: it's ambiguous (see commit d621cfe0a1),
and it brings back the "eat memory without bounds" problem.
* With SUSPEND, the client has to manage the flow of in-band commands to
keep the monitor available for out-of-band commands.
We currently DROP. Switch to SUSPEND.
Managing the flow of in-band commands to keep the monitor available for
out-of-band commands isn't really hard: just count the number of
"outstanding" in-band commands (commands sent minus replies received),
and if it exceeds the limit, hold back additional ones until it drops
below the limit again.
Note that we need to be careful pairing the suspend with a resume, or
else the monitor will hang, possibly forever. And here since we need to
make sure both:
(1) popping request from the req queue, and
(2) reading length of the req queue
will be in the same critical section, we let the pop function take the
corresponding queue lock when there is a request, then we release the
lock from the caller.

Although off_t permits up to 63 bits (8EB) of file offsets, in
practice, we're going to hit other limits first. Document some
of those limits in the qcow2 spec (some are inherent, others are
implementation choices of qemu), and how choice of cluster size
can influence some of the limits.
While we cannot map any uncompressed virtual cluster to any
address higher than 64 PB (56 bits) (due to the current L1/L2
field encoding stopping at bit 55), qemu's cap of 8M for the
refcount table can still access larger host addresses for some
combinations of large clusters and small refcount_order. For
comparison, ext4 with 4k blocks caps files at 16PB.
Another interesting limit: for compressed clusters, the L2 layout
requires an ever-smaller maximum host offset as cluster size gets
larger, down to a 512 TB maximum with 2M clusters. In particular,
note that with a cluster size of 8k or smaller, the L2 entry for
a compressed cluster could technically point beyond the 64PB mark,
but when you consider that with 8k clusters and refcount_order = 0,
you cannot access beyond 512T without exceeding qemu's limit of an
8M cap on the refcount table, it is unlikely that any image in the
wild has attempted to do so. To be safe, let's document that bits
beyond 55 in a compressed cluster must be 0.

reflected in HMP info mtree with a "nv-" prefix on the memory type.
This way, guest_phys_blocks_region_add() can skip the NV memory

The upper limit on the L2 cache size is increased from 1 MB to 32 MB

caused by the ability to set intervals for cache cleaning on Linux
platforms only).
This is done in order to allow default full coverage with the L2 cache
for images of up to 256 GB in size (was 8 GB). Note, that only the
needed amount to cover the full image is allocated. The value which is
changed here is just the upper limit on the L2 cache size, beyond which
it will not grow, even if the size of the image will require it to.

Sufficient L2 cache can noticeably improve the performance when using
large images with frequent I/O.
Previously, unless 'cache-size' was specified and was large enough, the
L2 cache was set to a certain size without taking the virtual image size
into account.
Now, the L2 cache assignment is aware of the virtual size of the image,
and will cover the entire image, unless the cache size needed for that is
larger than a certain maximum. This maximum is set to 1 MB by default
(enough to cover an 8 GB image with the default cluster size) but can
be increased or decreased using the 'l2-cache-size' option. This option
was previously documented as the *maximum* L2 cache size, and this patch
makes it behave as such, instead of as a constant size. Also, the
existing option 'cache-size' can limit the sum of both L2 and refcount
caches, as previously.

The mmio bar of the stdvga has some unused address space at the start.
It was reserved just in case it'll be needed for virtio, but it turned

We consciously chose in commit 1a9a507b to hide QAPI type names
from the introspection output on the wire, but added a command
line option -u to unmask the type name when doing a debug build.
The unmask option still remains useful to some other forms of
automated analysis, so it will not be removed; however, when it
is not in use, the generated .c file can be hard to read. At
the time when we first introduced masking, the generated file
consisted only of a monolithic C string, so there was no clean
way to inject any comments.
Later, in commit 7d0f982b, we switched the generation to output
a QLit object, in part to make it easier for future addition of
conditional compilation. In fact, commit d626b6c1 took advantage
of this by passing a tuple instead of a bare object for encoding
the output of conditionals. By extending that tuple, we can now
interject strategic comments.
For now, type name debug aid comments are only output once per
meta-type, rather than at all uses of the number used to encode
the type within the introspection data. But this is still a lot
more convenient than having to regenerate the file with the
unmask operation temporarily turned on - merely search the
generated file for '"NNN" =' to learn the corresponding source
name and associated definition of type NNN.
The generated qapi-introspect.c changes only with the addition
of comments, such as:

Section "QGA Synchronization" specifies that sending "a raw 0xFF
sentinel byte" makes the server "reset its state and discard all
pending data prior to the sentinel." What actually happens there is a
lexical error, which will produce one or more error responses.
Moreover, it's not specific to QGA.
Create new section "Forcing the JSON parser into known-good state" to
document the technique properly. Rewrite section "QGA
Synchronization" to document just the other direction, i.e. command
guest-sync-delimited.
Section "Protocol Specification" mentions "synchronization bytes

When QEMU emulates vNVDIMM labels and migrates vNVDIMM devices, it
needs to know whether the backend storage is a real persistent memory,
in order to decide whether special operations should be performed to
ensure the data persistence.
This boolean option 'pmem' allows users to specify whether the backend
storage of memory-backend-file is a real persistent memory. If
'pmem=on', QEMU will set the flag RAM_PMEM in the RAM block of the
corresponding memory region. If 'pmem' is set while lack of libpmem

Commit cf869d5317 "qmp: support out-of-band (oob) execution" added a
general mechanism for command-independent arguments just for an
out-of-band flag:
The "control" key is introduced to store this extra flag. "control"
field is used to store arguments that are shared by all the commands,
rather than command specific arguments. Let "run-oob" be the first.
However, it failed to reject unknown members of "control". For
instance, in QMP command
{"execute": "query-name", "id": 42, "control": {"crap": true}}
"crap" gets silently ignored.
Instead of fixing this, revert the general "control" mechanism
(because YAGNI), and do it the way I initially proposed, with key
"exec-oob". Simpler code, simpler interface.
An out-of-band command
{"execute": "migrate-pause", "id": 42, "control": {"run-oob": true}}
becomes
{"exec-oob": "migrate-pause", "id": 42}

Commit cf869d5317 "qmp: support out-of-band (oob) execution" made
"id" mandatory for all commands when the client accepted capability
"oob". This is rather onerous when you play with QMP by hand, and
unnecessarily so: only out-of-band commands need an ID for reliable
matching of response to command.
Revert that part of commit cf869d5317 for now, but have documentation
advise on the need to use "id" with out-of-band commands.

It often happens that just a few discriminator values imply extra data in
a flat union. Existing checks did not make possible to leave other values
uncovered. Such cases had to be worked around by either stating a dummy
(empty) type or introducing another (subset) discriminator enumeration.
Both options create redundant entities in qapi files for little profit.
With this patch it is not necessary anymore to add designated union
fields for every possible value of a discriminator enumeration.

* Documentation
* The avocado_qemu.Test base test class
* One example tests (version.py)
Additional functionality is expected to be added along the tests that

Use mmap_lock in user-mode to protect TCG state and the page descriptors.
In !user-mode, each vCPU has its own TCG state, so no locks needed.
Per-page locks are used to protect the page descriptors.
Per-TB locks are used in both modes to protect TB jumps.
Some notes:
- tb_lock is removed from notdirty_mem_write by passing a
locked page_collection to tb_invalidate_phys_page_fast.
- tcg_tb_lookup/remove/insert/etc have their own internal lock(s),
so there is no need to further serialize access to them.
- do_tb_flush is run in a safe async context, meaning no other
vCPU threads are running. Therefore acquiring mmap_lock there
is just to please tools such as thread sanitizer.
- Not visible in the diff, but tb_invalidate_phys_page already
has an assert_memory_lock.
- cpu_io_recompile is !user-only, so no mmap_lock there.
- Added mmap_unlock()'s before all siglongjmp's that could
be called in user-mode while mmap_lock is held.
+ Added an assert for !have_mmap_lock() after returning from
the longjmp in cpu_exec, just like we do in cpu_exec_step_atomic.

This applies to both user-mode and !user-mode emulation.
Instead of relying on a global lock, protect the list of incoming
jumps with tb->jmp_lock. This lock also protects tb->cflags,
so update all tb->cflags readers outside tb->jmp_lock to use
atomic reads via tb_cflags().
In order to find the destination TB (and therefore its jmp_lock)
from the origin TB, we introduce tb->jmp_dest[].
I considered not using a linked list of jumps, which simplifies
code and makes the struct smaller. However, it unnecessarily increases
memory usage, which results in a performance decrease. See for
instance these numbers booting+shutting down debian-arm:
Time (s) Rel. err (%) Abs. err (s) Rel. slowdown (%)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GHashTable + xxhash 21.63 1.08 0.233604 3.5919540
Using a hash table or a binary tree to keep track of the jumps
doesn't really pay off, not only due to the increased memory usage,
but also because most TBs have only 0 or 1 jumps to them. The maximum
number of jumps when booting debian-arm that I measured is 35, but
as we can see in the histogram below a TB with that many incoming jumps
is extremely rare; the average TB has 0.80 incoming jumps.

There's a common pattern in QEMU where a function needs to perform
a data load or store of an N byte integer in a particular endianness.
At the moment this is handled by doing a switch() on the size and
calling the appropriate ld*_p or st*_p function for each size.
Provide a new family of functions ldn_*_p() and stn_*_p() which
take the size as an argument and do the switch() themselves.

For compatibility reasons, commands that don't use new flag

This patch adds a protocol feature that is only advertised by

Move qapi-schema.json to qapi/, so it's next to its modules, and all
files get generated to qapi/, not just the ones generated for modules.
Consistently name the generated files qapi-MODULE.EXT:
qmp-commands.[ch] become qapi-commands.[ch], qapi-event.[ch] become
qapi-events.[ch], and qmp-introspect.[ch] become qapi-introspect.[ch].
This gets rid of the temporary hacks in scripts/qapi/commands.py,
scripts/qapi/events.py, and scripts/qapi/common.py.

Whenever qapi-schema.json changes, we run six programs eleven times to
update eleven files. Similar for qga/qapi-schema.json. This is
silly. Replace the six programs by a single program that spits out
all eleven files.
The programs become modules in new Python package qapi, along with the
helper library. This requires moving them to scripts/qapi/. While
moving them, consistently drop executable mode bits.

This patch fixes several mistakes in the documentation of the
compressed cluster descriptor:
1) the documentation claims that the cluster descriptor contains the
number of sectors used to store the compressed data, but what it
actually contains is the number of sectors *minus one* or, in other
words, the number of additional sectors after the first one.
2) the width of the fields is incorrectly specified. The number of bits
used by each field is
x = 62 - (cluster_bits - 8) for the offset field
y = (cluster_bits - 8) for the size field
So the offset field's location is [0, x-1], not [0, x] as stated.
3) the size field does not contain the size of the compressed data,
but rather the number of sectors where that data is stored. The
compressed data starts at the exact point specified in the offset
field and ends when there's enough data to produce a cluster of
decompressed data. Both points can be in the middle of a sector,
allowing several compressed clusters to be stored next to one
another, sharing sectors if necessary.

[Semantic conflict with commit 34e304e975 resolved, OSX breakage fixed]
according to Eduardo Habkost's commit fd3b02c889 all PCIEs now implement
INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE so we don't need is_express field anymore.
Devices that implements only INTERFACE_PCIE_DEVICE (is_express == 1)
or
devices that implements only INTERFACE_CONVENTIONAL_PCI_DEVICE (is_express == 0)
where not affected by the change.
The only devices that were affected are those that are hybrid and also
had (is_express == 1) - therefor only:
- hw/vfio/pci.c
- hw/usb/hcd-xhci.c
- hw/xen/xen_pt.c
For those 3 I made sure that QEMU_PCI_CAP_EXPRESS is on in instance_init()

To make our efforts on QEMU testing easier to consume by contributors,
let's add a document. For example, Patchew reports build errors on
patches that should be relatively easy to reproduce with a few steps, and
it is much nicer if there is such a documentation that it can refer to.
This focuses on how to run existing tests and how to write new test
cases, without going into the frameworks themselves.
The VM based testing section is moved from tests/vm/README which now
is a single line pointing to the new doc.

Currently the only vNVDIMM backend can guarantee the guest write
persistence is device DAX on Linux, because no host-side kernel cache
is involved in the guest access to it. The approach to detect whether
the backend is device DAX needs to access sysfs, which may not work
with SELinux.
Instead, we add the 'unarmed' option to device 'nvdimm', so that users
or management utils, which have enough knowledge about the backend,
can control the unarmed flag in guest ACPI NFIT via this option. The
guest Linux NVDIMM driver, for example, will mark the corresponding
vNVDIMM device read-only if the unarmed flag in guest NFIT is set.
The default value of 'unarmed' option is 'off' in order to keep the
backwards compatibility.

When mmap(2) the backend files, QEMU uses the host page size
(getpagesize(2)) by default as the alignment of mapping address.
However, some backends may require alignments different than the page
size. For example, mmap a device DAX (e.g., /dev/dax0.0) on Linux
kernel 4.13 to an address, which is 4K-aligned but not 2M-aligned,
fails with a kernel message like
[617494.969768] dax dax0.0: qemu-system-x86: dax_mmap: fail, unaligned vma (0x7fa37c579000 - 0x7fa43c579000, 0x1fffff)
Because there is no common approach to get such alignment requirement,
we add the 'align' option to 'memory-backend-file', so that users or
management utils, which have enough knowledge about the backend, can
specify a proper alignment via this option.

When you cancel an in-progress 'mirror' job (or "active `block-commit`")
with QMP `block-job-cancel`, it emits the event: BLOCK_JOB_CANCELLED.
However, when `block-job-cancel` is issued *after* `drive-mirror` has
indicated (via the event BLOCK_JOB_READY) that the source and
destination have reached synchronization:
[...] # Snip `drive-mirror` invocation & outputs
{
"execute":"block-job-cancel",
"arguments":{
"device":"virtio0"
}
}
{"return": {}}
It (`block-job-cancel`) will counterintuitively emit the event
'BLOCK_JOB_COMPLETED':
{
"timestamp":{
"seconds":1510678024,
"microseconds":526240
},
"event":"BLOCK_JOB_COMPLETED",
"data":{
"device":"virtio0",
"len":41126400,
"offset":41126400,
"speed":0,
"type":"mirror"
}
}
But this is expected behaviour, where the _COMPLETED event indicates
that synchronization has successfully ended (and the destination now has
a point-in-time copy, which is at the time of cancel).
So add a small note to this effect in 'block-core.json'. While at it,
also update the "Live disk synchronization -- drive-mirror and
blockdev-mirror" section in 'live-block-operations.rst'.

The owner of qemu.org has delegated authority to modify DNS records to
the QEMU Project. This has allowed us to use the domain name without
worries about IP address changes or technical issues disrupting service.
The issues described in commit 8593898109
("Use qemu-project.org domain name") have therefore been mitigated.
This patch switches back to consistently using qemu.org instead of
qemu-project.org in documentation, version.rc, and the Windows installer
script.
The git submodules and SeaBIOS still use qemu-project.org for the time
being. This will be fixed in the QEMU 2.12 release cycle.

Modify the pre_save method on VMStateDescription to return an int
rather than void so that it potentially can fail.
Changed zillions of devices to make them return 0; the only
case I've made it return non-0 is hw/intc/s390_flic_kvm.c that already
had an error_report/return case.
Note: If you add an error exit in your pre_save you must emit
an error_report to say why.

convenient to have documentation for formats, protocols, and filter

Extract the relevant part of qemu-doc.html into a new file called

Proper support of persistent reservation for multipath devices requires
communication with the multipath daemon, so that the reservation is
registered and applied when a path comes up. The device mapper
utilities provide a library to do so; this patch makes qemu-pr-helper.c
detect multipath devices and, when one is found, delegate the operation
to libmpathpersist.
Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
Introduce a privileged helper to run persistent reservation commands.
This lets virtual machines send persistent reservations without using
CAP_SYS_RAWIO or out-of-tree patches. The helper uses Unix permissions
and SCM_RIGHTS to restrict access to processes that can access its socket
and prove that they have an open file descriptor for a raw SCSI device.
The next patch will also correct the usage of persistent reservations
with multipath devices.
It would also be possible to support for Linux's IOC_PR_* ioctls in
the future, to support NVMe devices. For now, however, only SCSI is
supported.

It is a common requirement for virtual machine to send persistent
reservations, but this currently requires either running QEMU with
CAP_SYS_RAWIO, or using out-of-tree patches that let an unprivileged
QEMU bypass Linux's filter on SG_IO commands.
As an alternative mechanism, the next patches will introduce a
privileged helper to run persistent reservation commands without
expanding QEMU's attack surface unnecessarily.
The helper is invoked through a "pr-manager" QOM object, to which
file-posix.c passes SG_IO requests for PERSISTENT RESERVE OUT and
PERSISTENT RESERVE IN commands. For example:
$ qemu-system-x86_64
-device virtio-scsi \
-object pr-manager-helper,id=helper0,path=/var/run/qemu-pr-helper.sock
-drive if=none,id=hd,driver=raw,file.filename=/dev/sdb,file.pr-manager=helper0
-device scsi-block,drive=hd
or:
$ qemu-system-x86_64
-device virtio-scsi \
-object pr-manager-helper,id=helper0,path=/var/run/qemu-pr-helper.sock
-blockdev node-name=hd,driver=raw,file.driver=host_device,file.filename=/dev/sdb,file.pr-manager=helper0
-device scsi-block,drive=hd
Multiple pr-manager implementations are conceivable and possible, though
only one is implemented right now. For example, a pr-manager could:
- talk directly to the multipath daemon from a privileged QEMU
(i.e. QEMU links to libmpathpersist); this makes reservation work
properly with multipath, but still requires CAP_SYS_RAWIO
- use the Linux IOC_PR_* ioctls (they require CAP_SYS_ADMIN though)
- more interestingly, implement reservations directly in QEMU
through file system locks or a shared database (e.g. sqlite)

It's possible for address_space_get_flatview() as it currently stands
to cause a use-after-free for the returned FlatView, if the reference

Since FlatViews are not updated very often, we can just detect the
situation using a new atomic op atomic_fetch_inc_nonzero, similar to
Linux's atomic_inc_not_zero, which performs the refcount increment only if
it hasn't already hit zero. This is similar to Linux commit de09a9771a53

This patch documents (including their QMP invocations) all the four
major kinds of live block operations:
- `block-stream`
- `block-commit`
- `drive-mirror` (& `blockdev-mirror`)
- `drive-backup` (& `blockdev-backup`)
Things considered while writing this document:
- Use reStructuredText as markup language (with the goal of generating
the HTML output using the Sphinx Documentation Generator). It is
gentler on the eye, and can be trivially converted to different
formats. (Another reason: upstream QEMU is considering to switch to
Sphinx, which uses reStructuredText as its markup language.)
- Raw QMP JSON output vs. 'qmp-shell'. I debated with myself whether
to only show raw QMP JSON output (as that is the canonical
representation), or use 'qmp-shell', which takes key-value pairs. I
settled on the approach of: for the first occurrence of a command,
use raw JSON; for subsequent occurrences, use 'qmp-shell', with an
occasional exception.
- Usage of `-blockdev` command-line.
- Usage of 'node-name' vs. file path to refer to disks. While we have
`blockdev-{mirror, backup}` as 'node-name'-alternatives for
`drive-{mirror, backup}`, the `block-commit` command still operates
on file names for parameters 'base' and 'top'. So I added a caveat
at the beginning to that effect.
Refer this related thread that I started (where I learnt
`block-stream` was recently reworked to accept 'node-name' for 'top'
and 'base' parameters):
https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2017-05/msg06466.html
"[RFC] Making 'block-stream', and 'block-commit' accept node-name"
All commands showed in this document were tested while documenting.

names". This useful bit was originally articulated by Eric in his
KVMForum 2015 presentation, so I included that specific bit in this
document.

We traditionally mark optional members #optional in the doc comment.
Before commit 3313b61, this was entirely manual.
Commit 3313b61 added some automation because its qapi2texi.py relied
on #optional to determine whether a member is optional. This is no
longer the case since the previous commit: the only thing qapi2texi.py
still does with #optional is stripping it out. We still reject bogus
qapi-schema.json and six places for qga/qapi-schema.json.
Thus, you can't actually rely on #optional to see whether something is
optional. Yet we still make people add it manually. That's just
busy-work.
Drop the code to check, fix up and strip out #optional, along with all
instances of #optional. To keep it out, add code to reject it, to be
dropped again once the dust settles.

Make doc comments optional again, but add a new directive

Add test cases for the new pragma directive. While there, plug a

These are very much like the sample configuration files
for q35, and can be used both as documentation and as
a starting point for creating your own guest.
Two sample configuration files are provided:
* mach-virt-graphical.cfg can be used to start a
fully-featured (USB, graphical console, etc.)
guest that uses VirtIO devices;
* mach-virt-serial.cfg is similar but has a minimal
set of devices and uses the serial console.
All configuration files are fully commented and neatly

Instead of having a single sample configuration file,
we now have several:
* q35-emulated.cfg documents the default devices QEMU
adds to a q35 guest and the additional devices that
are pretty much guaranteed to be present in a
physical q35-based machine;
* q35-virtio-graphical.cfg can be used to start a
fully-featured (USB, graphical console, audio, etc.)
guest that uses VirtIO instead of emulated devices;
* q35-virtio-serial.cfg is similar but has a minimal
set of devices and uses the serial console.
All configuration files are fully commented and neatly

More precisely, the "x-file-slots" count is bumped for all machine types
that:
(a) use fw_cfg, and
(b) are not versioned (hence migration is not expected to work for them
across QEMU releases anyway), or have version 2.9.
This affects machine types implemented in the following source files:
- "hw/arm/virt.c". The "virt-*" machine type is versioned, and the <= 2.8
versions already depend on HW_COMPAT_2_8 (see commit e353aac51b).
Therefore adding the "x-file-slots" compat values to HW_COMPAT_2_8
suffices.
- "hw/i386/pc.c". The "pc-i440fx-*" (including "pc-*") and "pc-q35-*"
machine types are versioned. Modifying HW_COMPAT_2_8 is sufficient here
too (see commit "pc: Add 2.9 machine-types"). The "isapc" machtype is
not versioned. The "xenfv" machine type, which uses fw_cfg for direct
kernel booting, is also not versioned.
- "hw/ppc/mac_newworld.c". The "mac99" machine type is not versioned.
- "hw/ppc/mac_oldworld.c". The "g3beige" machine type is not versioned.
- "hw/sparc/sun4m.c". None of the 9 machine types defined in this file
appear versioned.
- "hw/sparc64/sun4u.c". None of the 3 machine types defined in this file
appear versioned.

We'd like to raise the value of FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS. Doing it naively could
lead to problems with backward migration: a more recent QEMU (running an
older machine type) would allow the guest, in fw_cfg_select(), to select a
high key value that is unavailable in the same machine type implemented by
the older (target) QEMU. On the target host, fw_cfg_data_read() for
example could dereference nonexistent entries.
As first step, size the FWCfgState.entries[*] and FWCfgState.entry_order
arrays dynamically. All three array sizes will be influenced by the new
field FWCfgState.file_slots (and matching device property).
Make the following changes:
- Replace the FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS macro with FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS_MIN (minimum
count of fw_cfg file slots) in the header file. The value remains 0x10.
- Replace all uses of FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS with a helper function called
fw_cfg_file_slots(), returning the new property.
- Eliminate the macro FW_CFG_MAX_ENTRY, and replace all its uses with a
helper function called fw_cfg_max_entry().
- In the MMIO- and IO-mapped realize functions both, allocate all three
arrays dynamically, based on the new property.
- The new property defaults to FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS_MIN. This is going to be
customized in the following patches.

A QemuLockCnt comprises a counter and a mutex, with primitives
to increment and decrement the counter, and to take and release the
mutex. It can be used to do lock-free visits to a data structure
whenever mutexes would be too heavy-weight and the critical section
is too long for RCU.
This could be implemented simply by protecting the counter with the
mutex, but QemuLockCnt is harder to misuse and more efficient.

As the name suggests, the qapi2texi script converts JSON QAPI
description into a texi file suitable for different target
formats (info/man/txt/pdf/html...).
It parses the following kind of blocks:
Free-form:
##
# = Section
# == Subsection
#
# Some text foo with *emphasis*
# 1. with a list
# 2. like that
#
# And some code:
# | $ echo foo
# | -> do this
# | <- get that
#
##
Symbol description:
##
# @symbol:
#
# Symbol body ditto ergo sum. Foo bar
# baz ding.
#
# @param1: the frob to frobnicate
# @param2: #optional how hard to frobnicate
#
# Returns: the frobnicated frob.
# If frob isn't frobnicatable, GenericError.
#
# Since: version
# Notes: notes, comments can have
# - itemized list
# - like this
#
# Example:
#
# -> { "execute": "quit" }
# <- { "return": {} }
#
##
That's roughly following the following EBNF grammar:
api_comment = "##\n" comment "##\n"
comment = freeform_comment | symbol_comment
freeform_comment = { "# " text "\n" | "#\n" }
symbol_comment = "# @" name ":\n" { member | tag_section | freeform_comment }
member = "# @" name ':' [ text ] "\n" freeform_comment
tag_section = "# " ( "Returns:", "Since:", "Note:", "Notes:", "Example:", "Examples:" ) [ text ] "\n" freeform_comment
text = free text with markup
Note that the grammar is ambiguous: a line "# @foo:\n" can be parsed
both as freeform_comment and as symbol_comment. The actual parser
recognizes symbol_comment.
See docs/qapi-code-gen.txt for more details.
Deficiencies and limitations:
- the generated QMP documentation includes internal types
- union type support is lacking
- type information is lacking in generated documentation
- doc comment error message positions are imprecise, they point
to the beginning of the comment.
- a few minor issues, all marked TODO/FIXME in the code
