Meson doesn't enjoy the same flexibility we have with Make in choosing
the include path. In particular the tracing headers are using
$(build_root)/$(<D).
In order to keep the include directives unchanged,
the simplest solution is to generate headers with patterns like
"trace/trace-audio.h" and place forwarding headers in the source tree
such that for example "audio/trace.h" includes "trace/trace-audio.h".
This patch is too ugly to be applied to the Makefiles now. It's only
a way to separate the changes to the tracing header files from the
Meson rewrite of the tracing logic.

Checking the enable/disable state of tracepoints via
trace_event_get_state_backends() does not work for modules.
qxl checks the state for a small optimization (avoid g_strndup

Compiling all virtio-gpu objects into a single module isn't a good plan
because the individual objects have different CONFIG_* dependencies.
Leads to module load failures on s390x due to vga support being
disabled, which in turn breaks '-device virtio-gpu-device' (flagged by
travis ci).
So back to the drawing board for modular virtio-gpu ...

Not exactly elegant, I'm afraid.
The "when != lbl:" is necessary to avoid transforming

it helps here.

The FROM_SSI_SLAVE() macro predates QOM and is used as a typesafe way
to cast from an SSISlave* to the instance struct of a subtype of
TYPE_SSI_SLAVE. Switch to using the QOM cast macros instead, which
have the same effect (by writing the QOM macros if the types were
previously missing them.)
(The FROM_SSI_SLAVE() macro allows the SSISlave member of the
subtype's struct to be anywhere as long as it is named "ssidev",
whereas a QOM cast macro insists that it is the first thing in the
subtype's struct. This is true for all the types we convert here.)
This removes all the uses of FROM_SSI_SLAVE() so we can delete the
definition.

In bcm2835_fb_mbox_push(), Coverity complains (CID 1429989) that we
pass a pointer to a local struct to another function without
initializing all its fields. This is a real bug:
bcm2835_fb_reconfigure() copies the whole of our new BCM2385FBConfig
struct into s->config, so any fields we don't initialize will corrupt
the state of the device.
Copy the two fields which we don't want to update (pixo and alpha)

they pass to object_property_set_link() for another call.
Harmless, because object_property_set_link() can't actually fail for
them: it fails when the property doesn't exist, is not settable, or
its .check() method fails. Fix by passing &error_abort instead.

sm501_init() and ati_vga_realize() create an "i2c-ddc" device, but
neglect to realize it. Affects machines sam460ex, shix, r2d, and
fulong2e.
In theory, a device becomes real only on realize. In practice, the
transition from unreal to real is a fuzzy one. The work to make a
device real can be spread between realize methods (fine),
instance_init methods (wrong), and board code wiring up the device
(fine as long as it effectively happens on realize). Depending on
what exactly is done where, a device can work even when we neglect
to realize it.
This one appears to work. Nevertheless, it's a clear misuse of the
interface. Even when it works today (more or less by chance), it can
break tomorrow.
Fix by realizing it right away. Visible in "info qom-tree"; here's

size calculation isn't correct with guest-supplied stride, the last
display line isn't accounted for correctly.
For the typical case of stride > linesize (add padding) we error on the
safe side (calculated size is larger than actual size).
With stride < linesize (scanlines overlap) the calculated size is
smaller than the actual size though so our guest memory mapping might
end up being too small.
While being at it also fix ramfb_create_display_surface to use hwaddr

The DEVICE() macro is defined as:
#define DEVICE(obj) OBJECT_CHECK(DeviceState, (obj), TYPE_DEVICE)
which expands to:
((DeviceState *)object_dynamic_cast_assert((Object *)(obj), (name),
__FILE__, __LINE__,
__func__))
This assertion can only fail when @obj points to something other
than its stated type, i.e. when we're in undefined behavior country.
Remove the unnecessary DEVICE() casts when we already know the
pointer is of DeviceState type.

Devices may have component devices and buses.
Device realization may fail. Realization is recursive: a device's
realize() method realizes its components, and device_set_realized()
realizes its buses (which should in turn realize the devices on that
bus, except bus_set_realized() doesn't implement that, yet).
When realization of a component or bus fails, we need to roll back:
unrealize everything we realized so far. If any of these unrealizes
failed, the device would be left in an inconsistent state. Must not
happen.
device_set_realized() lets it happen: it ignores errors in the roll
back code starting at label child_realize_fail.
Since realization is recursive, unrealization must be recursive, too.
But how could a partly failed unrealize be rolled back? We'd have to
re-realize, which can fail. This design is fundamentally broken.
device_set_realized() does not roll back at all. Instead, it keeps
unrealizing, ignoring further errors.
It can screw up even for a device with no buses: if the lone
dc->unrealize() fails, it still unregisters vmstate, and calls
listeners' unrealize() callback.
bus_set_realized() does not roll back either. Instead, it stops
unrealizing.
Fortunately, no unrealize method can fail, as we'll see below.
To fix the design error, drop parameter @errp from all the unrealize
methods.
Any unrealize method that uses @errp now needs an update. This leads
us to unrealize() methods that can fail. Merely passing it to another
unrealize method cannot cause failure, though. Here are the ones that
do other things with @errp:
* virtio_serial_device_unrealize()
Fails when qbus_set_hotplug_handler() fails, but still does all the
other work. On failure, the device would stay realized with its
resources completely gone. Oops. Can't happen, because
qbus_set_hotplug_handler() can't actually fail here. Pass
&error_abort to qbus_set_hotplug_handler() instead.
* hw/ppc/spapr_drc.c's unrealize()
Fails when object_property_del() fails, but all the other work is
already done. On failure, the device would stay realized with its
vmstate registration gone. Oops. Can't happen, because
object_property_del() can't actually fail here. Pass &error_abort
to object_property_del() instead.
* spapr_phb_unrealize()
Fails and bails out when remove_drcs() fails, but other work is
already done. On failure, the device would stay realized with some
of its resources gone. Oops. remove_drcs() fails only when
chassis_from_bus()'s object_property_get_uint() fails, and it can't
here. Pass &error_abort to remove_drcs() instead.
Therefore, no unrealize method can fail before this patch.
device_set_realized()'s recursive unrealization via bus uses
object_property_set_bool(). Can't drop @errp there, so pass
&error_abort.
We similarly unrealize with object_property_set_bool() elsewhere,
always ignoring errors. Pass &error_abort instead.
Several unrealize methods no longer handle errors from other unrealize
methods: virtio_9p_device_unrealize(),
virtio_input_device_unrealize(), scsi_qdev_unrealize(), ...
Much of the deleted error handling looks wrong anyway.
One unrealize methods no longer ignore such errors:
usb_ehci_pci_exit().
Several realize methods no longer ignore errors when rolling back:
v9fs_device_realize_common(), pci_qdev_unrealize(),
spapr_phb_realize(), usb_qdev_realize(), vfio_ccw_realize(),
virtio_device_realize().

The only way object_property_add() can fail is when a property with
the same name already exists. Since our property names are all
hardcoded, failure is a programming error, and the appropriate way to
handle it is passing &error_abort.
Same for its variants, except for object_property_add_child(), which
additionally fails when the child already has a parent. Parentage is
also under program control, so this is a programming error, too.
We have a bit over 500 callers. Almost half of them pass
&error_abort, slightly fewer ignore errors, one test case handles
errors, and the remaining few callers pass them to their own callers.
The previous few commits demonstrated once again that ignoring
programming errors is a bad idea.
Of the few ones that pass on errors, several violate the Error API.
The Error ** argument must be NULL, &error_abort, &error_fatal, or a
pointer to a variable containing NULL. Passing an argument of the
latter kind twice without clearing it in between is wrong: if the
first call sets an error, it no longer points to NULL for the second
call. ich9_pm_add_properties(), sparc32_ledma_realize(),
sparc32_dma_realize(), xilinx_axidma_realize(), xilinx_enet_realize()
are wrong that way.
When the one appropriate choice of argument is &error_abort, letting
users pick the argument is a bad idea.
Drop parameter @errp and assert the preconditions instead.
There's one exception to "duplicate property name is a programming
error": the way object_property_add() implements the magic (and
undocumented) "automatic arrayification". Don't drop @errp there.
Instead, rename object_property_add() to object_property_try_add(),
and add the obvious wrapper object_property_add().

The bochs-display mmio bar has some sub-regions with the actual hardware
registers. What happens when the guest access something outside those
regions depends on the archirecture. On x86 those reads succeed (and
return 0xff I think). On risc-v qemu aborts.
This patch adds handlers for the parent region, to make the wanted
behavior explicit and to make things consistent across architectures.

Map qxl rom read-only into the guest, so the guest can't tamper with the
content. qxl has a shadow copy of the rom to deal with that, but the
shadow doesn't cover the mode list. A privilidged user in the guest can
manipulate the mode list and that to trick qemu into oob reads, leading
to a DoS via segfault if that read access happens to hit unmapped memory.

have endianness issues even on real hardware so this may not fix all

sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator. Evidence:
* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).
* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.
Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.
Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400

In my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h triggers a
recompile of some 5400 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and
objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h).
hw/qdev-core.h includes sysemu/sysemu.h since recent commit e965ffa70a
"qdev: add qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler()". This is a bad idea:
hw/qdev-core.h is widely included.
Move the declaration of qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler() to
sysemu/sysemu.h, and drop the problematic include from hw/qdev-core.h.
Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 1800 objects.
qemu/uuid.h also drops from 5400 to 1800. A few more headers show
smaller improvement: qemu/notify.h drops from 5600 to 5200,
qemu/timer.h from 5600 to 4500, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from
5500 to 5000.

Almost a third of its inclusions are actually superfluous. Delete
them. Downgrade two more to qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h, and move one
from char/serial.h to char/serial.c.
hw/semihosting/config.c, monitor/monitor.c, qdev-monitor.c, and
stubs/semihost.c define variables declared in sysemu/sysemu.h without
including it. The compiler is cool with that, but include it anyway.
This doesn't reduce actual use much, as it's still included into
widely included headers. The next commit will tackle that.

TYPE_IOMMU_MEMORY_REGION is a direct subtype of TYPE_MEMORY_REGION.
Its instance struct is IOMMUMemoryRegion, and its first member is a
MemoryRegion. Correct. Its class struct is IOMMUMemoryRegionClass,
and its first member is a DeviceClass. Wrong. Messed up when commit
1221a47467 introduced the QOM type. It even included hw/qdev-core.h
just for that.
TYPE_MEMORY_REGION doesn't bother to define a class struct. This is
fine, it simply defaults to its super-type TYPE_OBJECT's class struct
ObjectClass. Changing IOMMUMemoryRegionClass's first member's type to
ObjectClass would be a minimal fix, if a bit brittle: if
TYPE_MEMORY_REGION ever acquired own class struct, we'd have to update
IOMMUMemoryRegionClass to use it.
Fix it the clean and robust way instead: give TYPE_MEMORY_REGION its
own class struct MemoryRegionClass now, and use it for
IOMMUMemoryRegionClass's first member.
Revert the include of hw/qdev-core.h, and fix the few files that have
come to rely on it.

Set QEMU_PCI_CAP_EXPRESS unconditionally in init(), then clear it in
realize() in case the device is not connected to a PCIe bus.
This makes sure the pci config space allocation is big enough, so
accessing the PCIe extended config space doesn't overflow the pci
config space buffer.
PCI(e) config space is guest writable. Writes are limited by
write mask (which probably is also filled with random stuff),
so the guest can only flip enabled bits. But I suspect it
still might be exploitable, so rather serious because it might
be a host escape for the guest. On the other hand the device
is probably not yet in widespread use.
(For a QEMU version without this commit, a mitigation for the
bug is available: use "-device bochs-display" as a conventional pci
device only.)

Currently the bitbang_i2c_init() function allocates a
bitbang_i2c_interface struct which it returns. This is unfortunate
because it means that if the function is used from a DeviceState
init method then the memory will be leaked by an "init then delete"
cycle, as used by the qmp/hmp commands that list device properties.
Since three out of four of the uses of this function are in
device init methods, switch the function to do an in-place
initialization of a struct that can be embedded in the
device state struct of the caller.
This fixes LeakSanitizer leak warnings that have appeared in the
patchew configuration (which only tries to run the sanitizers
for the x86_64-softmmu target) now that we use the bitbang-i2c
code in an x86-64 config.

A Xen public header have been imported into QEMU (by
f65eadb639 "xen: import ring.h from xen"), but there are other header
that depends on ring.h which come from the system when building QEMU.
This patch resolves the issue of having headers from the system
importing a different copie of ring.h.
This patch is prompt by the build issue described in the previous
patch: 'Revert xen/io/ring.h of "Clean up a few header guard symbols"'
ring.h and the new imported headers are moved to
"include/hw/xen/interface" as those describe interfaces with a guest.
The imported headers are cleaned up a bit while importing them: some
part of the file that QEMU doesn't use are removed (description
of how to make hypercall in grant_table.h have been removed).
Other cleanup:
- xen-mapcache.c and xen-legacy-backend.c don't need grant_table.h.
- xenfb.c doesn't need event_channel.h.

Add a base class that is common to virtio-gpu and vhost-user-gpu
devices.
The VirtIOGPUBase base class provides common functionalities necessary
for both virtio-gpu and vhost-user-gpu:
- common configuration (max-outputs, initial resolution, flags)
- virtio device initialization, including queue setup
- device pre-conditions checks (iommu)
- migration blocker
- virtio device callbacks
- hooking up to qemu display subsystem
- a few common helper functions to reset the device, retrieve display
informations
- a class callback to unblock the rendering (for GL updates)
What is left to the virtio-gpu subdevice to take care of, in short,
are all the virtio queues handling, command processing and migration.

A number of virtio devices (gpu, crypto, mouse, keyboard, tablet) only
support the virtio-1 (aka modern) mode. Currently if the user launches
QEMU, setting those devices to enable legacy mode, QEMU will silently
create them in modern mode, ignoring the user's (mistaken) request.
This patch introduces proper data validation so that an attempt to
configure a virtio-1-only devices in legacy mode gets reported as an
error to the user.
Checking this required introduction of a new field to explicitly track
what operating model is to be used for a device, separately from the
disable_modern and disable_legacy fields that record the user's
requested configuration.

Fix the check preventing calling pixman functions that would access
memory outside allocated vram. The r128 X driver sometimes seem to try
blits that span outside vram, this check prevents crashing QEMU in
that case. (The r128 X driver may have problems even on real hardware
so I'm not sure if it's a client bug or emulation problem but at least
QEMU should survive.)

The SPICE_RING_PROD_ITEM() macro is initializing a local
'uint64_t *' variable to point to the 'el' field inside
the QXLReleaseRing struct. This uint64_t field is not
guaranteed aligned as the struct is packed.
Code should not take the address of fields within a
packed struct. Changing the SPICE_RING_PROD_ITEM()
macro to avoid taking the address of the field is
impractical. It is clearer to just remove the macro
and inline its functionality in the three call sites
that need it.

When virtio-vga was added, the intention was to only support it for
those machines where the firmware does not know about virtio-gpu,
and supported VGA legacy hardware before virtio-{gpu,vga} were
introduced.
The Kconfig switch however enabled virtio-vga for all machines with
a PCI bus, and libvirt then prefers it even on hardware where
virtio-gpu would be preferrable. At least for now, only enable
virtio-vga for PC, hppa and pSeries machines, as was the case

At least two machines, the PPC mac99 and MIPS fulong2e, have an ATI
gfx chip by default (Rage 128 Pro and M6/RV100 respectively) and
guests running on these and the PMON2000 firmware of the fulong2e
expect this to be available. Fortunately these are very similar chips
so they can be mostly emulated in the same device model. This patch
adds basic emulation of these ATI VGA chips.
While this is incomplete and currently only enough to run the MIPS
firmware and get framebuffer output with Linux, it allows the fulong2e
board to work more like the real hardware and having it in QEMU in
this state provides a way to experiment with it and allows others to
contribute to improve it. It is compiled for all archs but only the
fulong2e (which currently has no display output at all) is set to use
it by default (in a separate patch).

Instead of including the same list of devices for each target,
set CONFIG_PCI to true, and make the devices default to present
whenever PCI is available. However, s390x does not want all the
PCI devices, so there is a separate symbol to enable them.
Done mostly with the following script:
while read i; do

sed -i -e'/^config '$i'$/!b' -en \
-e'a\' -e' default y if PCI_DEVICES\' -e' depends on PCI' \

configure script. This is the reason for the Kconfig.host file introduced
in the previous patch. Whenever a file in default-configs/*.mak used
$(...) to refer to a config-host.mak symbol, this is replaced by a
Kconfig dependency; this part must be done already in this patch
for bisectability.

The Kconfig files were generated mostly with this script:
for i in `grep -ho CONFIG_[A-Z0-9_]* default-configs/* | sort -u`; do
set fnord `git grep -lw $i -- 'hw/*/Makefile.objs' `
shift
if test $# = 1; then
cat >> $(dirname $1)/Kconfig << EOF
config ${i#CONFIG_}
bool
EOF
git add $(dirname $1)/Kconfig
else
echo $i $*
fi
done
sed -i '$d' hw/*/Kconfig
for i in hw/*; do
if test -d $i && ! test -f $i/Kconfig; then
touch $i/Kconfig
git add $i/Kconfig
fi
done
Whenever a symbol is referenced from multiple subdirectories, the
script prints the list of directories that reference the symbol.
These symbols have to be added manually to the Kconfig files.
Kconfig.host and hw/Kconfig were created manually.

The QXL_IO_LOG command allows the guest to send log messages to the host
via a buffer in the QXLRam struct. QEMU prints these to the console if
the qxl 'guestdebug' option is set to non-zero. It will also feed them
to the trace subsystem if any backends are built-in.
In both cases the log_buf data will get treated as being as a nul
terminated string, by the printf '%s' format specifier and / or other
code reading the buffer.
QEMU does nothing to guarantee that the log_buf really is nul terminated,
so there is potential for out of bounds array access.
This would affect any QEMU which has the log, syslog or ftrace trace
backends built into QEMU. It can only be triggered if the 'qxl_io_log'
trace event is enabled, however, so they are not vulnerable without
specific administrative action to enable this.
It would also affect QEMU if the 'guestdebug' parameter is set to a
non-zero value, which again is not the default and requires explicit
admin opt-in.

Rather than attempting to convert the existing backend infrastructure to
be QOM compliant (which would be hard to do in an incremental fashion),
subsequent patches will introduce a completely new framework for Xen PV

name clashes. The re-named 'legacy' infrastructure will be removed once all
backends have been ported to the new framework.
This patch is purely cosmetic. No functional change.

Looking at chardev/spice.c code, I realize compilation was broken for
a while with spice-server < 0.12.3. Let's bump required version
to 0.12.5, released May 19 2014, instead of adding more #ifdef.
(this patch combines changes from an early version and some of
Frediano "[PATCH 2/2] spice: Bump required spice-server version to
0.12.6")
According to repology, all the distros that are build target platforms
for QEMU include it:
RHEL-7: 0.14.0
Debian (Stretch): 0.12.8
Debian (Jessie): 0.12.5
FreeBSD (ports): 0.14.0
OpenSUSE Leap 15: 0.14.0
Ubuntu (Xenial): 0.12.6
Note that a previous version of this patch was bumping version to
0.12.6. Unfortunately, Debian Jessie (oldstable) is stuck with spice
server 0.12.5, and QEMU should keep building until after 2y of current
stable (Stretch), which will be around June 17th 2019. Qemu 4.1
should thus be free of bumping to spice-server 0.12.6 during 4.1
development cycle.

as channel id. So put that into the qxl->id field too.
In typical use cases (one primary qxl-vga device, optionally one or more

anything.
With this in place the qxl->id can not be used any more to figure

In downstream distros like RHEL we'd like to disable some of the "legacy"
devices of QEMU. The ISA version of the Cirrus VGA device is one of these
legacy devices. So let's make the build process a little bit more flexible
here by putting the Cirrus ISA code into a separate file which is only
included if both, CONFIG_VGA_CIRRUS and CONFIG_VGA_ISA are set.
Note that this disables "isa-cirrus-vga" for the ppc-softmmu and the
alpha-softmmu target since CONFIG_VGA_ISA is not set there. But I think
this is OK since these targets are only interested in the PCI variant
anyway.

Coverity complains (CID 1395628) that the multiply in the calculation
of the framebuffer base is performed as 32x32 but then used in a
context that takes a 64-bit hwaddr. This can't actually ever
overflow the 32-bit result, because of the constraints placed on
the s->config values in bcm2835_fb_validate_config(). But we
can placate Coverity anyway, by explicitly casting one of the
inputs to a hwaddr, so the whole expression is calculated with
64-bit arithmetic.

If QEMU is compiled with clang-7 it results in the warning:
hw/display/qxl.c:1884:19: error: misaligned or large atomic operation
may incur significant performance penalty [-Werror,-Watomic-alignment]
old_pending = atomic_fetch_or(&d->ram->int_pending, le_events);
^
This is because the Spice headers forgot to define the QXLRam struct
with the '__aligned__(4)' attribute. clang 7 and newer will thus
warn that the access here to int_pending might not be 4-aligned
(because the QXLRam object d->ram points at might start at a
misaligned address). In fact we set up d->ram in init_qxl_ram() so
it always starts at a 4K boundary, so we know the atomic access here
is OK.
Newer Spice versions (with Spice commit
beda5ec7a6848be20c0cac2a9a8ef2a41e8069c1) will fix the bug;
for older Spice versions, work around it by telling the compiler
explicitly that the alignment is OK using __builtin_assume_aligned().

Monochrome cursors are still used by Windows guests with the
QXL-WDDM-DOD driver. Such cursor types have one odd feature, inversion
of colors. GDK does not seem to support it, so implement an alternative
solution: fill the inverted pixels and add an outline to make the cursor
more visible. Tested with the text cursor in Notepad and Windows 10.
cursor_set_mono is also used by the vmware GPU, so add a special check
to avoid breaking its 32bpp format (tested with Kubuntu 14.04.4). I was
unable to find a guest which supports the 1bpp format with a vmware GPU.
The old implementation was buggy and removed in v2.10.0-108-g79c5a10cdd
("qxl: drop mono cursor support"), this version improves upon that by
adding bounds validation, clarifying the semantics of the two masks and
adds a workaround for inverted colors support.

When processing monitor config from guest store head0 width and height
for single-head configurations. Use these when creating the
DisplaySurface in the local renderer.
This fixes a rendering issue with wayland. Wayland rounds up the
framebuffer width and height to a multiple of 64, so with odd
resolutions (800x600 for example) the framebuffer is larger than the
actual screen. The monitor config has the actual screen size though.
This fixes guest display for anything using the local renderer

EDID is a metadata format to describe monitors. On physical hardware
the monitor has an eeprom with that data block which can be read over
i2c bus.
On a linux system you can usually find the EDID data block in
/sys/class/drm/$card/$connector/edid. xorg ships a edid-decode utility
which you can use to turn the blob into readable form.
I think it would be a good idea to use EDID for virtual displays too.
Needs changes in both qemu and guest kms drivers. This patch is the
first step, it adds an generator for EDID blobs to qemu. Comes with a
qemu-edid test tool included.
With EDID we can pass more information to the guest. Names and serial
numbers, so the guests display configuration has no boring "Unknown
Monitor". List of video modes. Display resolution, pretty important
in case we want add HiDPI support some day.

Validate the config settings that the guest tries to set.
The wiki page documentation is not really accurate here:
generally rather than failing requests to set bad parameters,
the hardware will just clip them to something sensible.
Validate the most important parameters: sizes and
the viewport offsets. This prevents the framebuffer
code from trying to read out-of-range memory.
In the property handling code, we validate the new parameters every
time we encounter a tag that sets them. This means we validate the
config multiple times if the request includes multiple config-setting
tags, but the code would require significant restructuring to do a
validation only once but still return the clipped settings for
get-parameter tags and the buffer allocation tag.
Validation of settings made via the older bcm2835_fb_mbox_push()
function will be done in the next commit.

The raspi framebuffir in bcm2835_fb supports the definition
of a virtual "viewport", which is smaller than the full
physical framebuffer size and at an adjustable offset within
it. Only the viewport area is sent to the screen. This allows
the guest to do things like double buffering, or scrolling
by adjusting the viewport origin. Currently QEMU doesn't
implement this at all.
Add support for this feature:
* the property mailbox code needs to distinguish the
virtual width/height from the physical width/height
* the framebuffer code needs to do something with the
virtual width/height/origin information
Note that the wiki documentation on the semantics of the
virtual and physical height and width has it the wrong way
around -- the virtual size is the size of the allocated
buffer, and the physical size is the size of the display,
so the virtual size is always the same as or larger than
the physical.
If the viewport size is set smaller than the physical
screen size, we ignore the viewport settings completely
and just display the physical screen area.

The handling of framebuffer properties in the bcm2835_property code
is a bit clumsy, because for each of the many fb related properties
we try to track the value we're about to set and whether we're going
to be setting a value, and then we hand all the new values off
to the framebuffer via a function which takes them all as separate
arguments. It would be simpler if the property code could easily
copy all the framebuffer's current settings, update them with
the new specified values and then ask the framebuffer to switch
to the new set.
As the first part of this refactoring, pull all the fb config
settings fields in BCM2835FBState out into their own struct.

aux_create_slave() calls qdev_init_nofail() which in turn "realizes"
the corresponding object. This is unlike qdev_create(), and it is wrong
because qdev_init_nofail() must not be called from an instance_init
function. Move qdev_init_nofail() and the subsequent aux_map_slave into
the caller's realize function.
There are two more bugs that needs to be fixed here, too, where the
objects are created but not added as children. Therefore when
you call object_unparent on them, nothing happens.
In particular dpcd and edid give you an infinite loop in bus_unparent,
because device_unparent is not called and does not remove them from
the list of devices on the bus.

The boot framebuffer is expected to be configured by the firmware, so it
uses fw_cfg as interface. Initialization goes as follows:
(1) Check whenever etc/ramfb is present.
(2) Allocate framebuffer from RAM.
(3) Fill struct RAMFBCfg, write it to etc/ramfb.
Done. You can write stuff to the framebuffer now, and it should appear
automagically on the screen.
Note that this isn't very efficient because it does a full display
update on each refresh. No dirty tracking. Dirty tracking would have
to be active for the whole ram slot, so that wouldn't be very efficient
either. For a boot display which is active for a short time only this
isn't a big deal. As permanent guest display something better should be
used (if possible).

add_link() doesn't add a reference to the target object, while
set_link() does.
Furthemore, OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE flags, set during add_link,
says whether a reference must be released when the property is destroyed.
This can lead to leaks if the property was later set_link(), as the
added reference is never released.
Instead, rename OBJ_PROP_LINK_UNREF_ON_RELEASE to OBJ_PROP_LINK_STRONG

After writing up the virtual mdev device emulating a display supporting
the bochs vbe dispi interface (mbochs.ko) and seeing how simple it
actually is I've figured that would be useful for qemu too.
So, here it is, -device bochs-display. It is basically -device VGA
without legacy vga emulation. PCI bar 0 is the framebuffer, PCI bar 2
is mmio with the registers. The vga registers are simply not there
though, neither in the legacy ioport location nor in the mmio bar.
Consequently it is PCI class DISPLAY_OTHER not DISPLAY_VGA.
So there is no text mode emulation, no weird video modes (planar,
256color palette), no memory window at 0xa0000. Just a linear
framebuffer in the pci memory bar. And the amount of code to emulate
this (and therefore the attack surface) is an order of magnitude smaller
when compared to vga emulation.
Compatibility wise it works with OVMF (latest git master).
The bochs-drm.ko linux kernel module can handle it just fine too.
So UEFI guests should not see any functional difference to VGA.

depth == 0 is used to indicate 256 color modes. Our region calculation
goes wrong in that case. So detect that and just take the safe code
path we already have for the wraparound case.
While being at it also catch depth == 15 (where our region size
calculation goes wrong too). And make the comment more verbose,
explaining what is going on here.
Without this windows guest install might trigger an assert due to trying
to check dirty bitmap outside the snapshot region.

Make sure we only ask the spice local renderer for display updates in
case we have a valid primary surface. Without that spice is confused
and throws errors in case a display update request (triggered by

This implements rudimentary support for interrupt generation on the
PL110. I am working on a new DRI/KMS driver for Linux and since that
uses the blanking interrupt, we need something to fire here. Without
any interrupt support Linux waits for a while and then gives ugly
messages about the vblank not working in the console (it does not
hang perpetually or anything though, DRI is pretty forgiving).
I solved it for now by setting up a timer to fire at 60Hz and pull
the interrupts for "vertical compare" and "next memory base"
at this interval. This works fine and fires roughly the same number
of IRQs on QEMU as on the hardware and leaves the console clean
and nice.
People who want to create more accurate emulation can probably work
on top of this if need be. It is certainly closer to the hardware
behaviour than what we have today anyway.

The above code is writing the registers of VGA randomly.
We can write VGA CRT controller registers index 0x0C or 0x0D

range of vga ram. So we should check the validation of memory address

The point of writing a macro embedded in a 'do { ... } while (0)'
loop (particularly if the macro has multiple statements or would
otherwise end with an 'if' statement) is so that the macro can be
used as a drop-in statement with the caller supplying the
trailing ';'. Although our coding style frowns on brace-less 'if':
if (cond)
statement;
else
something else;
that is the classic case where failure to use do/while(0) wrapping
would cause the 'else' to pair with any embedded 'if' in the macro
rather than the intended outer 'if'. But conversely, if the macro
includes an embedded ';', then the same brace-less coding style
would now have two statements, making the 'else' a syntax error
rather than pairing with the outer 'if'. Thus, even though our
coding style with required braces is not impacted, ending a macro
with ';' makes our code harder to port to projects that use
brace-less styles.
The change should have no semantic impact. I was not able to
fully compile-test all of the changes (as some of them are
examples of the ugly bit-rotting debug print statements that are
completely elided by default, and I didn't want to recompile
with the necessary -D witnesses - cleaning those up is left as a
bite-sized task for another day); I did, however, audit that for
all files touched, all callers of the changed macros DID supply
a trailing ';' at the callsite, and did not appear to be used
as part of a brace-less conditional.
