When the BIOS returns ebx = 0, the current entry is still valid and
needs to be included in the Multiboot memory map.
Fixing this meant that using bx as the entry index doesn't work any
more because it's 0 on the last entry (and it was SeaBIOS-specific
anyway), so the whole loop had to change a bit and should be more
generic as a result (ebx can be an arbitrary continuation number now,
and the entry size returned by the BIOS is used instead of hard-coding
20 bytes).

Currently on the pseries machine the SLOF firmware is used normally,
but we bypass it when -kernel is specified. Having these two
different boot paths can cause some confusion.
In particular at present we need to "probe" the (emulated) PCI bus and
produce device tree nodes for the PCI devices in qemu, for the -kernel
case. In the SLOF case, it takes the device tree from qemu adds some
stuff to it then passes it on to the kernel.
It's been decided that a better approach is to always boot through
SLOF, even when using -kernel. WIth this approach we can leave PCI
probing and device node creation to SLOF in all cases which removes a
bunch of code in qemu, and avoids iterating the PCI devices from the
machine specific init code which we're not supposed to do.
This patch changes qemu to always boot through SLOF, and not to create
PCI nodes. Simultaneously it updates the included version of SLOF
(submodule and binary image) to one which supports (and requires) the
new approach.
The new SLOF version also includes a number of unrelated enhancements:
support for booting from virtio-pci devices and e1000, greatly
improved FCode support and many bugfixes. It also makes SLOF ready to
be used even when specifying a kernel on the qemu command line.

Currently, the emulated pSeries machine requires the use of the
-kernel parameter in order to explicitly load a guest kernel. This
means booting from the virtual disk, cdrom or network is not possible.
This patch addresses this limitation by inserting a within-partition
firmware image (derived from the "SLOF" free Open Firmware project).
If -kernel is not specified, qemu will now load the SLOF image, which
has access to the qemu boot device list through the device tree, and
can boot from any of the usual virtual devices.
In order to support the new firmware, an extension to the emulated
machine/hypervisor is necessary. Unlike Linux, which expects
multi-CPU entry to be handled kexec() style, the SLOF firmware expects
only one CPU to be active at entry, and to use a hypervisor RTAS
method to enable the other CPUs one by one.
This patch also implements this 'start-cpu' method, so that SLOF can
start the secondary CPUs and marshal them into the kexec() holding
pattern ready for entry into the guest OS. Linux should, and in the
future might directly use the start-cpu method to enable initially
disabled CPUs, but for now it does require kexec() entry.

On pSeries machines, operating systems can instantiate "RTAS" (Run-Time
Abstraction Services), a runtime component of the firmware which implements
a number of low-level, infrequently used operations. On logical partitions
under a hypervisor, many of the RTAS functions require hypervisor
privilege. For simplicity, therefore, hypervisor systems typically
implement the in-partition RTAS as just a tiny wrapper around a hypercall
which actually implements the various RTAS functions.
This patch implements such a hypercall based RTAS for our emulated pSeries
machine. A tiny in-partition "firmware" calls a new hypercall, which
looks up available RTAS services in a table.

signrom.sh has multiple bugs:
- the last byte is considered when calculating the existing checksum, but not
when computing the correction
- apprently the 'expr' expression overflows and produces incorrect results with
larger roms
- if the checksum happened to be zero, we calculated the correction byte to be
256
Instead of rewriting this in half a line of python, this patch fixes the bugs.

Commit dd4239d657 broke multiboot. It replaced the
instruction "rep insb (%dx), %es:(%edi)" by the binary output of
"addr32 rep insb (%dx), %es:(%di)".
Linuxboot calls the respective helper function in a code16 section. So the
original instruction was automatically translated to its "addr32" equivalent.
For multiboot, we're running in code32 so gcc didn't add the "addr32" which
breaks the instruction.
This patch splits that helper function in one which uses addr32 and one which
does not, so everyone's happy.
The good news is that nobody probably cared so far. The bundled multiboot.bin
binary was built before the change and is thus correct.
Please also put this patch into -stable.

This patch adds a firmware blob to the S390 target. The blob is a simple
implementation of a virtio client that tries to read the second stage
bootloader from sectors described as of offset 0x20 in the MBR.
In combination with an updated zipl this allows for booting from virtio
block devices. This firmware is built from the same sources as the second
stage bootloader. You can find a virtio capable s390-tools in this repo:

The gdt address calculation in linuxboot.bin is broken in two ways: first
it loads %cs into %eax, but that instruction leaves the high bits of %eax
undefined and we did not clear them. Secondly, we completely ignore the

With these issues fixed, linuxboot works again.

The vpath directive has two advantages over the VPATH variable:
1) it allows to skip searching of .o files; 2) the default semantics
are to append to the vpath, so there is no confusion between "VPATH=xyz"

Since "vpath %.c %.h PATH" is not valid, I'm introducing a wrapper

We already have a working multiboot implementation that uses fw_cfg to get
its kernel module etc. data in int19 runtime now.
So what's missing is a working linux boot option rom. While at it I figured it
would be a good idea to take the opcode generator out of pc.c and instead use
a proper option rom, like we do with multiboot.
So here it is - an fw_cfg using option rom for -kernel with linux!

We will have a linux boot option rom soon, so let's take all functionality
that might be useful for both to a header file that both roms can include.
That way we only have to write fw_cfg access code once.

Right now we load the guest kernel to RAM, fire off the BIOS, hope it
doesn't clobber memory and run an option rom that jumps into the kernel.
That breaks with SeaBIOS, as that clears memory. So let's read all
kernel, module etc. data using the fw_cfg interface when in the int19
handler.
This patch implements said mechanism for multiboot.

* Rename pxe-eepro100.bin to pxe-i82559er.bin.
The other devices supported by eepro100.c need
additional pxe boot ROM images.
* Call rom_add_option during initialisation.
The code won't work with two or more different
eepro100 devices, because it only adds one option
ROM, but this use case is perhaps never needed.
Using this patch, model=i82559er at least works partially.

That patch didn't seem to help on OpenBSD so I now finally got around
making another one that just emits the bytes of the offending insn

Now we have to variables: QEMU_CFLAGS: flags without which we can't compile
CFLAGS: "-g -O2"
We can now run:
make CFLAGS="-fbar" foo.o
make CFLAGS="" foo.o
make CFLAGS="-O3" foo.o
And it all should work.

We're marking the used entry bitmap in smbios_load_external() for each
type we check, regardless of whether we loaded anything. This makes
subsequent calls behave as if we've already loaded the tables from qemu
and can result in missing tables (ex. multiple type4 entries on an SMP
guest). Only mark the bitmap if we actually load something.

to pretty much every system available.

In order to build the multiboot option rom, we need a Makefile and a tool
to sign the rom with.
Both are provided by this patch and mostly taken from the extboot source,
written by Anthony Liguori.
Once built, the resulting binary gets copied to pc-bios automatically.
Building also occurs automatically when on an x86 host.

This patch implements support for Multiboot on x86 for -kernel.
Multiboot is a "new" approach to get rid of different bootloaders, providing
a unified interface for the kernel. It supports command line options and
kernel modules.
The two probably best known projects using multiboot are Xen and GNU Hurd.
This implementation should be mostly feature-complete. It is missing VBE
extensions, but as no system uses them currently it does not really hurt.
To use multiboot, specify the kernel as -kernel option. Modules should be given
as -initrd options, seperated by a comma (,). -append also works.
Please bear in mind that grub also does gzip decompression, which qemu does
not do yet. To run existing images, please ungzip them first.
The guest multiboot loader code is implemented as option rom using int 19.
Parts of the work are based on efforts by Rene Rebe, who originally ported
my code to int 19.

Create a new -smbios option (x86-only) to allow binary SMBIOS entries
to be passed through to the BIOS or modify the default values of
individual fields of type 0 and 1 entries on the command line.
Binary SMBIOS entries can be generated as follows:
dmidecode -t 1 -u | grep $'^\t\t[^"]' | xargs -n1 | \
perl -lne 'printf "%c", hex($_)' > smbios_type_1.bin
These can then be passed to the BIOS using this switch:
-smbios file=smbios_type_1.bin
Command line generation supports the following syntax:
-smbios type=0[,vendor=str][,version=str][,date=str][,release=%d.%d]
-smbios type=1[,manufacturer=str][,product=str][,version=str][,serial=str]
[,uuid=$(uuidgen)][,sku=str][,family=str]
For instance, to add a serial number to the type 1 table:
-smbios type=1,serial=0123456789
Interface is extensible to support more fields/tables as needed.

Apparently, guests are very tolerant of corrupt ACPI tables because our
tables have been badly corrupted for some time now. A version of
Knoppix using a 2.6.11 kernel refused to boot and it turned out it was
due to the interrupt override table introduced by the recent HPET
commit.
This patch updates the BIOS and introduces a patch to pack the ACPI
tables. If you have a guest that used to work and is broken by the this
commit, let me know. We have some weird hacks in the tables that I
suspect are work arounds for this bug.

Since most IO devices are integrated into the 440EP chip, "Bamboo support"
mostly entails implementing the -kernel, -initrd, and -append options.
These options are implemented by loading the guest as if u-boot had done it,
i.e. loading a flat device tree, updating it to hold initrd addresses, ram
size, and command line, and passing the FDT address in r3.
Since we use it with KVM, we enable the virtio block driver and include hooks
necessary for KVM support.
