Hardware clears the MSR[ME] bit when delivering a machine check
interrupt, so that is what QEMU does.
The spapr environment runs in supervisor mode though, and receives
machine check interrupts after they are processed by the hypervisor,
and MSR[ME] must always be enabled in supervisor mode (otherwise it
could checkstop the system). So MSR[ME] must not be cleared when
delivering machine checks to the supervisor.
The fix to prevent supervisor mode from modifying MSR[ME] also
prevented it from re-enabling the incorrectly cleared MSR[ME] bit
when returning from handling the interrupt. Before that fix, the
problem was not very noticable with well-behaved code. So the
Fixes tag is not strictly correct, but practically they go together.

The GDB server protocol assigns an arbitrary numbering of the SPRs.
We track this correspondence on each SPR with gdb_id, using it to
resolve any SPR requests GDB makes.
Early on we generate an XML representation of the SPRs to give GDB,
including this numbering. However the XML is cached globally, and we
skip setting the SPR gdb_id values on subsequent threads if we detect
it is cached. This causes QEMU to fail to resolve SPR requests against
secondary CPUs because it cannot find the matching gdb_id value on that
thread's SPRs.
This is a minimal fix to first assign the gdb_id values, then return
early if the XML is cached. Otherwise we generate the XML using the
now already initialised gdb_id values.

BookE software TLB is implemented by flushing old translations from the
relevant TCG TLB whenever software TLB entries change. This means a new
software TLB entry should not have any corresponding cached TCG TLB
translations, so there is nothing to flush. The exception is multiple
software TLBs that cover the same address and address space, but that is
a programming error and results in undefined behaviour, and flushing
does not give an obviously better outcome in that case either.

The 440 tlbwe (write entry) instruction misses several cases that must
flush the TCG TLB:
- If the new size is smaller than the existing size, the EA no longer
covered should be flushed. This looks like an inverted inequality

- If the TLB PID changes.
- If the TLB attr bit 0 (translation address space) changes.
- If low prot (access control) bits change.
Fix this by removing tricks to avoid TLB flushes, and just invalidate
the TLB if any valid entry is being changed, similarly to 4xx.

The TB, VTB, PURR, HDEC SPRs are per-LPAR registers, and the TFMR is a
per-core register. Add the necessary SMT synchronisation and value

The TFMR can only drive the timebase state machine via thread 0 of the

This implements the core timebase state machine, which is the core side
of the time-of-day system in POWER processors. This facility is operated
by control fields in the TFMR register, which also contains status
fields.
The core timebase interacts with the chiptod hardware, primarily to
receive TOD updates, to synchronise timebase with other cores. This
model does not actually update TB values with TOD or updates received
from the chiptod, as timebases are always synchronised. It does step
through the states required to perform the update.
There are several asynchronous state transitions. These are modelled
using using mfTFMR to drive state changes, because it is expected that
firmware poll the register to wait for those states. This is good enough
to test basic firmware behaviour without adding real timers. The values
chosen are arbitrary.

One of the functions of the ChipTOD is to transfer TOD to the Core
(aka PC - Pervasive Core) timebase facility.
The ChipTOD can be programmed with a target address to send the TOD
value to. The hardware implementation seems to perform this by
sending the TOD value to a SCOM address.
This implementation grabs the core directly and manipulates the
timebase facility state in the core. This is a hack, but it works
enough for now. A better implementation would implement the transfer
to the PnvCore xscom register and drive the timebase state machine
from there.

The character "+" is now forbidden in QOM device names (see commit
b447378e12 - "Limit type names to alphanumerical and some few special
characters"). For the "power5+" and "power7+" CPU names, there is
currently a hack in type_name_is_valid() to still allow them for
compatibility reasons. However, there is a much nicer solution for this:
Simply use aliases! This way we can still support the old names without
the need for the ugly hack in type_name_is_valid().

The Big QEMU Lock (BQL) has many names and they are confusing. The
actual QemuMutex variable is called qemu_global_mutex but it's commonly
referred to as the BQL in discussions and some code comments. The
locking APIs, however, are called qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() and
qemu_mutex_unlock_iothread().
The "iothread" name is historic and comes from when the main thread was
split into into KVM vcpu threads and the "iothread" (now called the main
loop thread). I have contributed to the confusion myself by introducing
a separate --object iothread, a separate concept unrelated to the BQL.
The "iothread" name is no longer appropriate for the BQL. Rename the
locking APIs to:
- void bql_lock(void)
- void bql_unlock(void)
- bool bql_locked(void)
There are more APIs with "iothread" in their names. Subsequent patches
will rename them. There are also comments and documentation that will be
updated in later patches.

The patch below fixes a bug in the VSX_CVT_FP_TO_INT and VSX_CVT_FP_TO_INT2
macros in target/ppc/fpu_helper.c where a non-NaN floating point value from the
source vector is incorrectly converted to 0, 0x80000000, or 0x8000000000000000
instead of the expected value if a preceding source floating point value from
the same source vector was a NaN.
The bug in the VSX_CVT_FP_TO_INT and VSX_CVT_FP_TO_INT2 macros in
target/ppc/fpu_helper.c was introduced with commit c3f24257e3.
This patch also adds a new vsx_f2i_nan test in tests/tcg/ppc64 that checks that
the VSX xvcvspsxws, xvcvspuxws, xvcvspsxds, xvcvspuxds, xvcvdpsxws, xvcvdpuxws,
xvcvdpsxds, and xvcvdpuxds instructions correctly convert non-NaN floating point

ppc only migrates reserve_addr, so the destination machine can get a
valid reservation with an incorrect reservation value of 0. Prior to
commit 392d328abe ("target/ppc: Ensure stcx size matches larx"),
this could permit a stcx. to incorrectly succeed. That commit
inadvertently fixed that bug because the target machine starts with an
impossible reservation size of 0, so any stcx. will fail.
This behaviour is permitted by the ISA because reservation loss may
have implementation-dependent cause. What's more, with KVM machines it
is impossible save or reasonably restore reservation state. However if
the vmstate is being used for record-replay, the reservation must be
saved and restored exactly in order for execution from snapshot to
match the record.
This patch deprecates the existing incomplete reserve_addr vmstate,
and adds a new vmstate subsection with complete reservation state.
The new vmstate is needed only when record-replay mode is active.

TCG does not maintain the DEC reigster in the SPR array, so it does get
migrated. TCG also needs to re-start the decrementer timer on the
destination machine.
Load and store the decrementer into the SPR when migrating. This works
for the level-triggered (book3s) decrementer, and should be compatible
with existing KVM machines that do keep the DEC value there.
This fixes lost decrementer interrupt on migration that can cause
hangs, as well as other problems including record-replay bugs.

Single-step interrupts are suppressed if the nip is between 0x100 and
0xf00. This has been the case for a long time and it's not clear what
the intention is. Likely either an attempt to suppress trace interrupts
for instructions that cause an interrupt on completion, or a workaround
to prevent software tripping over itself single stepping its interrupt
handlers.
BookE interrupt vectors are set by IVOR registers, and BookS has AIL
modes and new interrupt types, so there are many interrupts including
the debug interrupt which can be outside this range. So any effect it
might have had does not cover most cases (including Linux on recent

kvm_arch_get_default_type() returns the default KVM type. This hook is
particularly useful to derive a KVM type that is valid for "none"
machine model, which is used by libvirt to probe the availability of
KVM.
For MIPS, the existing mips_kvm_type() is reused. This function ensures
the availability of VZ which is mandatory to use KVM on the current
QEMU.

The Power ISA has the concept of sub-processors:
Hardware is allowed to sub-divide a multi-threaded processor into
"sub-processors" that appear to privileged programs as multi-threaded
processors with fewer threads.
POWER9 and POWER10 have two modes, either every thread is a
sub-processor or all threads appear as one multi-threaded processor. In
the user manuals these are known as "LPAR per thread" / "Thread LPAR",
and "LPAR per core" / "1 LPAR", respectively.
The practical difference is: in thread LPAR mode, non-hypervisor SPRs
are not shared between threads and msgsndp can not be used to message
siblings. In 1 LPAR mode, some SPRs are shared and msgsndp is usable.
Thrad LPAR allows multiple partitions to run concurrently on the same
core, and is a requirement for KVM to run on POWER9/10 (which does not
gang-schedule an LPAR on all threads of a core like POWER8 KVM).
Traditionally, SMT in PAPR environments including PowerVM and the
pseries QEMU machine with KVM acceleration behaves as in 1 LPAR mode.
In OPAL systems, Thread LPAR is used. When adding SMT to the powernv
machine, it is therefore preferable to emulate Thread LPAR.
To account for this difference between pseries and powernv, an LPAR mode
flag is added such that SPRs can be implemented as per-LPAR shared, and
that becomes either per-thread or per-core depending on the flag.

Currently on PPC64 qemu always dumps the guest memory in

WARNING: machine type mismatch:

<snip>
This happens because cpu_get_dump_info() passes cpu->env->has_hv_mode
to function ppc_interrupts_little_endian(), the cpu->env->has_hv_mode
always set for powerNV even though the guest is not running in hv mode.
The hv mode should be taken from msr_mask MSR_HVB bit
(cpu->env.msr_mask & MSR_HVB). This patch fixes the issue by passing
MSR_HVB value to ppc_interrupts_little_endian() in order to determine
the guest endianness.
The crash tool also expects guest kernel endianness should match the
endianness of the dump.
The patch was tested on POWER9 box booted with Linux as host in
following cases:

The top bits of the LEV field of the sc instruction are to be treated as
as a reserved field rather than a reserved value, meaning LEV is
effectively the bottom bit. LEV=0xF should be treated as LEV=1 and be
a hypercall, for example.
This changes the instruction execution to just set lev from the low bit
of the field. Processors which don't support the LEV field will continue
to ignore it.
ISA v3.1 defines LEV to be 2 bits, in order to add the 'sc 2' ultracall
instruction. TCG does not support Ultravisor, so don't worry about
that bit.

ISA v3.1 introduced prefix instructions. Among the changes, various
synchronous interrupts report whether they were caused by a prefix
instruction in (H)SRR1.
The case of instruction fetch that causes an HDSI due to access of a
process-scoped table faulting on the partition scoped translation is the
tricky one. As with ISIs and HISIs, this does not try to set the prefix
bit because there is no instruction image to be loaded. The HDSI needs
the originating access type to be passed through to the handler to
distinguish this from HDSIs that fault translating process scoped tables
originating from a load or store instruction (in that case the prefix
bit should be provided).

The PMU raises a performance monitor exception (causing an interrupt
when MSR[EE]=1) when MMCR0[PMAO] is set, and lowers it when clear.
Wire this up and implement the interrupt delivery for books. Linux perf
record can now collect PMI-driven samples.
fire_PMC_interrupt is renamed to perfm_alert, which matches a bit closer
to the new terminology used in the ISA and distinguishes the alert
condition (e.g., counter overflow) from the PERFM (or EBB) interrupts.

Some of the PMU hflags bits can go out of synch, for example a store to
MMCR0 with PMCjCE=1 fails to update hflags correctly and results in
hflags mismatch:
qemu: fatal: TCG hflags mismatch (current:0x2408003d rebuilt:0x240a003d)
This can be reproduced by running perf on a recent machine.
Some of the fragility here is the duplication of PMU hflags calculations.
This change consolidates that in a single place to update pmu-related
hflags, to be called after a well defined state changes.
The post-load PMU update is pulled out of the MSR update because it does
not depend on the MSR value.

ppc hypervisors turn HEAI interrupts into program interrupts injected
into the guest that executed the illegal instruction, if the hypervisor
doesn't handle it some other way.
The nested-hv implementation failed to account for this HEAI->program
conversion. The virtual hypervisor wants to see the HEAI when running
a nested guest, so that interrupt type can be returned to its KVM

POWER9 DD2.1 and earlier had significant limitations when running KVM,
including lack of "mixed mode" MMU support (ability to run HPT and RPT

which is worked around by disabling "AIL" mode for the guest.
These processors are not widely available, and it's difficult to deal

"small core" type that OpenPOWER processors use. QEMU's PVR for all
other POWER9/10 have chip type 0, which "enterprise" systems use.
The difference does not really matter to QEMU (because it does not care
about SMT mode in the target), but for consistency all PVRs should use
the same chip type. We'll go with the SMT4 OpenPOWER type.

The behaviour of the Address Translation Mode on Interrupt resource is
not consistently supported by all CPU versions or all KVM versions: KVM
HV does not support mode 2, and does not support mode 3 on POWER7 or
early POWER9 processesors. KVM PR only supports mode 0. TCG supports all
modes (0, 2, 3) on CPUs with support for the corresonding LPCR[AIL] mode.
This leads to inconsistencies in guest behaviour and could cause problems
migrating guests.
This was not noticable for Linux guests for a long time because the
kernel only uses modes 0 and 3, and it used to consider AIL-3 to be
advisory in that it would always keep the AIL-0 vectors around, so it
did not matter whether or not interrupts were delivered according to
the AIL mode. Recent Linux guests depend on AIL mode 3 working as
specified in order to support the SCV facility interrupt. If AIL-3 can
not be provided, then H_SET_MODE must return an error to Linux so it can
disable the SCV facility (failure to do so can lead to userspace being
able to crash the guest kernel).
Add the ail-mode-3 capability to specify that AIL-3 is supported. AIL-0
is implied as the baseline, and AIL-2 is no longer supported by spapr.
AIL-2 is not known to be used by any software, but support in TCG could
be restored with an ail-mode-2 capability quite easily if a regression
is reported.
Modify the H_SET_MODE Address Translation Mode on Interrupt resource
handler to check capabilities and correctly return error if not
supported.
KVM has a cap to advertise support for AIL-3.

This changes VRSAVE, DSISR, HDSISR, DAWRX0, PIDR, LPIDR, DEXCR,
HDEXCR, CTRL, TSCR, MMCRH, and PMC[1-6] from to be 32-bit registers.
This only goes by the 32/64 classification in the architecture, it
does not try to implement finer details of SPR implementation (e.g.,
not all bits implemented as simple read/write storage).

The following commits changed the code such that the fallback to MFSS for MFFSCRN,
MFFSCRNI, MFFSCE and MFFSL on pre 3.0 ISAs was removed and became an illegal instruction:
bf8adfd88b - target/ppc: Move mffscrn[i] to decodetree
394c2e2fda - target/ppc: Move mffsce to decodetree
3e5bce70ef - target/ppc: Move mffsl to decodetree
The hardware will handle them as a MFFS instruction as the code did previously.
This means applications that were segfaulting under qemu when encountering these
instructions which is used in glibc libm functions for example.
The fallback for MFFSCDRN and MFFSCDRNI added in a later patch was also missing.
This patch restores the fallback to MFSS for these instructions on pre 3.0s ISAs
as the hardware decoder would, fixing the segfaulting libm code. It doesn't have
the fallback for 3.0 onwards to match hardware behaviour.
