The '-usbdevice' option is considered as deprecated nowadays and
we might want to remove these options in a future version of QEMU.
So mark this options as deprecated in the documenation and print out
a warning if it is used to tell the user what to use instead.
While we're at it, improve also some other minor USB-related spots
in qemu-options.hx that were not up to date anymore.

We want to support real (i.e. not virtual) channel devices
even for guests that do not support MCSS-E (where guests may
see devices from any channel subsystem image at once). As all
virtio-ccw devices are in css 0xfe (and show up in the default
css 0 for guests not activating MCSS-E), we need an option to
squash both the virtio subchannels and e.g. passed-through
subchannels from their real css (0-3, or 0 for hosts not
activating MCSS-E) into the default css. This will be
exploited in a later patch.

legacy cpu to node mapping is using cpu index values to map
VCPU to node with help of '-numa node,nodeid=node,cpus=x[-y]'
option. However cpu index is internal concept and QEMU users
have to guess /reimplement qemu's logic/ to map it to
a concrete cpu socket/core/thread to make sane CPUs
placement across numa nodes.
This patch allows to map cpu objects to numa nodes using
the same properties as used for cpus with -device/device_add
(socket-id/core-id/thread-id/node-id).
At present valid properties/values to address CPUs could be
fetched using hotpluggable-cpus monitor/qmp command, it will
require user to start qemu twice when creating domain to fetch
possible CPUs for a machine type/-smp layout first and
then the second time with numa explicit mapping for actual
usage. The first step results could be saved and reused to
set/change mapping later as far as machine type/-smp stays
the same.
Proposed impl. supports exact and wildcard matching to
simplify CLI and allow to set mapping for a specific cpu
or group of cpu objects specified by matched properties.
For example:
# exact mapping x86
-numa cpu,node-id=x,socket-id=y,core-id=z,thread-id=n
# exact mapping SPAPR
-numa cpu,node-id=x,core-id=y
# wildcard mapping, all cpu objects that match socket-id=y
# are mapped to node-id=x
-numa cpu,node-id=x,socket-id=y

When using a virtfs root filesystem, the mount_tag needs to be set to
/dev/root. This can be done long-hand as
-fsdev local,id=root,path=/path/to/rootfs,...
-device virtio-9p-pci,fsdev=root,mount_tag=/dev/root
but the -virtfs shortcut cannot be used as it hard-codes the device identifier
to match the mount_tag, and device identifiers may not contain '/':
$ qemu-system-x86_64 -virtfs local,path=/foo,mount_tag=/dev/root,security_model=passthrough
qemu-system-x86_64: -virtfs local,path=/foo,mount_tag=/dev/root,security_model=passthrough: duplicate fsdev id: /dev/root
To support this case using -virtfs, we allow the device identifier to be
specified explicitly when the mount_tag is not suitable:

This patch provides a simple FRU support for the BMC simulator. FRUs
are loaded from a file which name is specified in the object
properties, each entry having a fixed size, also specified in the
properties. If the file is unknown or not accessible for some reason,
a unique entry of 1024 bytes is created as a default. Just enough to
start some simulation.
These commands complies with the IPMI spec : "34. FRU Inventory Device
Commands".

The IPMI BMC simulator populates the sdr/sensor tables with a minimal
set of entries (Watchdog). But some qemu platforms might want to use
extra entries for their custom needs.
This patch modifies slighty the initializing routine to take into
account a larger set read from a file. The name of the file to use is

The new command line option -blockdev works like QMP command
blockdev-add.
The option argument may be given in JSON syntax, exactly as in QMP.
Example usage:
-blockdev '{"node-name": "foo", "driver": "raw", "file": {"driver": "file", "filename": "foo.img"} }'
The JSON argument doesn't exactly blend into the existing option
syntax, so the traditional KEY=VALUE,... syntax is also supported,
using dotted keys to do the nesting:
-blockdev node-name=foo,driver=raw,file.driver=file,file.filename=foo.img
This does not yet support lists, but that will be addressed shortly.
Note that calling qmp_blockdev_add() (say via qmp_marshal_block_add())
right away would crash. We need to stash the configuration for later
instead. This is crudely done, and bypasses QemuOpts, even though
storing configuration is what QemuOpts is for. Need to revamp option
infrastructure to support QAPI types like BlockdevOptions.

The PC machines (pc-q35-* pc-i440fx-* pc-* isapc xenfv) automatically
create lsi53c895a SCSI HBAs and SCSI devices to honor -drive if=scsi.
For giggles, try -drive if=scsi,bus=25,media=cdrom --- this makes QEMU
create 25 of them.
lsi53c895a is thoroughly obsolete (PCI Ultra2 SCSI, ca. 2000), and
currently has no maintainer in QEMU. megasas is a better choice,
except with old OSes that lack drivers. virtio-scsi is a much better
choice when you have a driver, but only (newish) Linux comes with one
in the box. There is no good default that works for all guests.
Encourage users to pick a non-obsolete SCSI HBA that works for them by
deprecating -drive if=scsi.

The code which interprets the CLI args to populate the SocketAddress
objects for plain & websockets VNC is quite complex already and will
need further enhancements shortly. Refactor it into separate methods
to avoid vnc_display_open getting even larger. As a side effect of
the refactoring, it is now possible to specify a listen address for
the websocket server explicitly. e.g,
-vnc localhost:5900,websockets=0.0.0.0:8080
will listen on localhost for the plain VNC server, but expose the
websockets VNC server on the public interface. This refactoring
also removes the restriction that prevents enabling websockets
when the plain VNC server is listening on a UNIX socket.

Because TFTP does not support byte ranges, it was never usable with our
curl block driver. Since apparently nobody has ever complained loudly
enough for someone to take care of the issue until now, it seems
reasonable to assume that nobody has ever actually used it.
Therefore, it should be safe to just drop it from curl's protocol list.
[Jeff Cody: Below is additional summary pulled, with some rewording,
from followup emails between Max and Markus, to explain what
worked and what didn't]
TFTP would sometimes work, to a limited extent, for images <= the curl
"readahead" size, so long as reads started at offset zero. By default,
that readahead size is 256KB.
Reads starting at a non-zero offset would also have returned data from a
zero offset. It can become more complicated still, with mixed reads at
zero offset and non-zero offsets, due to data buffering.
In short, TFTP could only have worked before in very specific scenarios
with unrealistic expectations and constraints.

QEMU compiles a list of data directories from various sources. When
consuming a QEMU binary it's useful to be able to get this list of
data directories: a primary reason is so you can list what BIOSes or
keymaps ship with this version of QEMU. However without reproducing
the method that QEMU uses internally, it's not possible to get the
list of data directories.
This commit adds a simple '-L help' option that just lists out the
data directories as qemu calculates them:
$ ./x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -L help
/home/rjones/d/qemu/pc-bios

$ ./x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 -L /tmp -L help

FW CFG's primary user is QEMU, which uses it to expose configuration
information (in the widest sense) to Firmware. Thus the name FW CFG.
FW CFG can also be used by others for their own purposes. QEMU is
merely acting as transport then. Names starting with opt/ are
reserved for such uses. There is no provision, however, to guide safe
sharing among different such users.
Fix that, loosely following QMP precedence: names should start with
opt/RFQDN/, where RFQDN is a reverse fully qualified domain name you
control.

When debugging big programs or system emulation sometimes you want both
the verbosity of cpu, exec et all but don't want to generate lots of logs
for unneeded stuff. This patch adds a new option -dfilter which allows
you to specify interesting address ranges in the form:
-dfilter 0x8000..0x8fff,0xffffffc000080000+0x200,...
Then logging code can use the new qemu_log_in_addr_range() function to
decide if it will output logging information for the given range.

This patch adds support for reading input events directly from linux
evdev devices and forward them to the guest. Unlike virtio-input-host
which simply passes on all events to the guest without looking at them
this will interpret the events and feed them into the qemu input
subsystem.
Therefore this is limited to what the qemu input subsystem and the
emulated input devices are able to handle. Also there is no support for
absolute coordinates (tablet/touchscreen). So we are talking here about
basic mouse and keyboard support.
The advantage is that it'll work without virtio-input drivers in the
guest, the events are delivered to the usual ps/2 or usb input devices
(depending on what the machine happens to have). And for keyboards
qemu is able to switch the keyboard between guest and host on hotkey.
The hotkey is hard-coded for now (both control keys), initialy the
guest owns the keyboard.
Probably most useful when assigning vga devices with vfio and using a
physical monitor instead of vnc/spice/gtk as guest display.
Usage: Add '-input-linux /dev/input/event<nr>' to the qemu command
line. Note that udev has rules which populate /dev/input/by-{id,path}
with static names, which might be more convinient to use.

Migration of pseries-2.3 doesn't have configuration section. Unfortunately,
QEMU 2.4/2.4.1/2.5 are buggy and always stream and expect the configuration
section, and break migration both ways.
This patch introduces a property which allows to enforce a configuration
section for machines who don't have one.
It can be set at startup:
-machine enforce-config-section=on
or later from the QEMU monitor:
qom-set /machine enforce-config-section on
It is up to the tooling to set or unset this property according to the
version of the QEMU at the other end of the pipe.

This adds support for dma-buf passing to spice. This makes virtio-gpu
with 3d acceleration work with spice.
Workflow:
* virglrenderer renders the guest command stream into a texture.
* qemu exports the texture as dma-buf and passes on that dma-buf
to spice-server.
* spice-server passes the dma-buf to spice-client, using unix
socket file descriptor passing.
* spice-client asks the window systems composer to render the
dma-buf to the screen.
Requires cutting edge spice (server) and spice-gtk (client) builds,
from git master branch.
Also requires libvirt managing your qemu instance, and using
"virt-viewer --attach $guest". libvirt will connect spice-server and
spice-client using unix sockets instead of tcp sockets then, which
is required for file descriptor passing.
Works for the local case (spice server and client on the same machine)
only. Supporting remote too is planned (by feeding the dma-bufs into
gpu-assisted video encoder), but not there yet.
gl mode is turned off by default, use "-spice gl=on,$otherargs" to
enable it.

The Microsoft spec about the SLIC and MSDM ACPI tables at
<http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=234834> requires the OEM ID and
OEM Table ID fields to be consistent between the SLIC and the RSDT/XSDT.
That further affects the FADT, because a similar match between the FADT
and the RSDT/XSDT is required by the ACPI spec in general.
This patch wires up the previous three patches.

This integrates support for QIOChannelTLS object in the TCP
chardev backend. If the 'tls-creds=NAME' option is passed with
the '-chardev tcp' argument, then it will setup the chardev
such that the client is required to establish a TLS handshake
when connecting. There is no support for checking the client
certificate against ACLs in this initial patch. This is pending
work to QOM-ify the ACL object code.
A complete invocation to run QEMU as the server for a TLS
encrypted serial dev might be
$ qemu-system-x86_64 \
-nodefconfig -nodefaults -device sga -display none \
-chardev socket,id=s0,host=127.0.0.1,port=9000,tls-creds=tls0,server \
-device isa-serial,chardev=s0 \
-object tls-creds-x509,id=tls0,endpoint=server,verify-peer=off,\
dir=/home/berrange/security/qemutls
To test with the gnutls-cli tool as the client:
$ gnutls-cli --priority=NORMAL -p 9000 \
--x509cafile=/home/berrange/security/qemutls/ca-cert.pem \
127.0.0.1
If QEMU was told to use 'anon' credential type, then use the
priority string 'NORMAL:+ANON-DH' with gnutls-cli
Alternatively, if setting up a chardev to operate as a client,
then the TLS credentials registered must be for the client
endpoint. First a TLS server must be setup, which can be done
with the gnutls-serv tool
$ gnutls-serv --priority=NORMAL -p 9000 --echo \
--x509cafile=/home/berrange/security/qemutls/ca-cert.pem \
--x509certfile=/home/berrange/security/qemutls/server-cert.pem \
--x509keyfile=/home/berrange/security/qemutls/server-key.pem
Then QEMU can connect with
$ qemu-system-x86_64 \
-nodefconfig -nodefaults -device sga -display none \
-chardev socket,id=s0,host=127.0.0.1,port=9000,tls-creds=tls0 \

Typically a UNIX guest OS will log boot messages to a serial
port in addition to any graphical console. An admin user
may also wish to use the serial port for an interactive
console. A virtualization management system may wish to
collect system boot messages by logging the serial port,
but also wish to allow admins interactive access.
Currently providing such a feature forces the mgmt app
to either provide 2 separate serial ports, one for
logging boot messages and one for interactive console
login, or to proxy all output via a separate service
that can multiplex the two needs onto one serial port.
While both are valid approaches, they each have their
own downsides. The former causes confusion and extra
setup work for VM admins creating disk images. The latter
places an extra burden to re-implement much of the QEMU
chardev backends logic in libvirt or even higher level
mgmt apps and adds extra hops in the data transfer path.
A simpler approach that is satisfactory for many use
cases is to allow the QEMU chardev backends to have a
"logfile" property associated with them.
$QEMU -chardev socket,host=localhost,port=9000,\
server=on,nowait,id-charserial0,\
logfile=/var/log/libvirt/qemu/test-serial0.log
-device isa-serial,chardev=charserial0,id=serial0
This patch introduces a 'ChardevCommon' struct which
is setup as a base for all the ChardevBackend types.
Ideally this would be registered directly as a base
against ChardevBackend, rather than each type, but
the QAPI generator doesn't allow that since the
ChardevBackend is a non-discriminated union. The
ChardevCommon struct provides the optional 'logfile'
parameter, as well as 'logappend' which controls
whether QEMU truncates or appends (default truncate).

NFIT is defined in ACPI 6.0: 5.2.25 NVDIMM Firmware Interface Table (NFIT)
Currently, we only support PMEM mode. Each device has 3 structures:
- SPA structure, defines the PMEM region info
- MEM DEV structure, it has the @handle which is used to associate specified
ACPI NVDIMM device we will introduce in later patch.
Also we can happily ignored the memory device's interleave, the real
nvdimm hardware access is hidden behind host
- DCR structure, it defines vendor ID used to associate specified vendor
nvdimm driver. Since we only implement PMEM mode this time, Command
window and Data window are not needed
The NVDIMM functionality is controlled by the parameter, 'nvdimm', which
is introduced for the machine, there is a example to enable it:
-machine pc,nvdimm -m 8G,maxmem=100G,slots=100 -object \
memory-backend-file,id=mem1,share,mem-path=/tmp/nvdimm1,size=10G -device \

Introduce a new QCryptoSecret object class which will be used
for providing passwords and keys to other objects which need
sensitive credentials.
The new object can provide secret values directly as properties,
or indirectly via a file. The latter includes support for file
descriptor passing syntax on UNIX platforms. Ordinarily passing
secret values directly as properties is insecure, since they
are visible in process listings, or in log files showing the
CLI args / QMP commands. It is possible to use AES-256-CBC to
encrypt the secret values though, in which case all that is
visible is the ciphertext. For ad hoc developer testing though,
it is fine to provide the secrets directly without encryption
so this is not explicitly forbidden.
The anticipated scenario is that libvirtd will create a random
master key per QEMU instance (eg /var/run/libvirt/qemu/$VMNAME.key)
and will use that key to encrypt all passwords it provides to
QEMU via '-object secret,....'. This avoids the need for libvirt
(or other mgmt apps) to worry about file descriptor passing.
It also makes life easier for people who are scripting the
management of QEMU, for whom FD passing is significantly more
complex.
Providing data inline (insecure, only for ad hoc dev testing)
$QEMU -object secret,id=sec0,data=letmein
Providing data indirectly in raw format
printf "letmein" > mypasswd.txt
$QEMU -object secret,id=sec0,file=mypasswd.txt
Providing data indirectly in base64 format
$QEMU -object secret,id=sec0,file=mykey.b64,format=base64
Providing data with encryption
$QEMU -object secret,id=master0,file=mykey.b64,format=base64 \
-object secret,id=sec0,data=[base64 ciphertext],\
keyid=master0,iv=[base64 IV],format=base64
Note that 'format' here refers to the format of the ciphertext
data. The decrypted data must always be in raw byte format.

This patch is initially based a patch from Nikolay Nikolaev.
This patch adds vhost-user multiple queue support, by creating a nc
and vhost_net pair for each queue.
Qemu exits if find that the backend can't support the number of requested
queues (by providing queues=# option). The max number is queried by a
new message, VHOST_USER_GET_QUEUE_NUM, and is sent only when protocol
feature VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_MQ is present first.
The max queue check is done at vhost-user initiation stage. We initiate
one queue first, which, in the meantime, also gets the max_queues the
backend supports.
In older version, it was reported that some messages are sent more times
than necessary. Here we came an agreement with Michael that we could
categorize vhost user messages to 2 types: non-vring specific messages,
which should be sent only once, and vring specific messages, which should
be sent per queue.
Here I introduced a helper function vhost_user_one_time_request(), which
lists following messages as non-vring specific messages:
VHOST_USER_SET_OWNER
VHOST_USER_RESET_DEVICE
VHOST_USER_SET_MEM_TABLE
VHOST_USER_GET_QUEUE_NUM
For above messages, we simply ignore them when they are not sent the first
time.

Switch VNC server over to using the QCryptoTLSSession object
for the TLS session. This removes the direct use of gnutls
from the VNC server code. It also removes most knowledge
about TLS certificate handling from the VNC server code.
This has the nice effect that all the CONFIG_VNC_TLS
conditionals go away and the user gets an actual error
message when requesting TLS instead of it being silently
ignored.
With this change, the existing configuration options for
enabling TLS with -vnc are deprecated.
Old syntax for anon-DH credentials:
-vnc hostname:0,tls
New syntax:
-object tls-creds-anon,id=tls0,endpoint=server \
-vnc hostname:0,tls-creds=tls0
Old syntax for x509 credentials, no client certs:
-vnc hostname:0,tls,x509=/path/to/certs
New syntax:
-object tls-creds-x509,id=tls0,dir=/path/to/certs,endpoint=server,verify-peer=no \
-vnc hostname:0,tls-creds=tls0
Old syntax for x509 credentials, requiring client certs:
-vnc hostname:0,tls,x509verify=/path/to/certs
New syntax:
-object tls-creds-x509,id=tls0,dir=/path/to/certs,endpoint=server,verify-peer=yes \
-vnc hostname:0,tls-creds=tls0
This aligns VNC with the way TLS credentials are to be
configured in the future for chardev, nbd and migration
backends. It also has the benefit that the same TLS
credentials can be shared across multiple VNC server
instances, if desired.
If someone uses the deprecated syntax, it will internally
result in the creation of a 'tls-creds' object with an ID
based on the VNC server ID. This allows backwards compat
with the CLI syntax, while still deleting all the original
TLS code from the VNC server.

libiscsi starting with 1.15 will properly support timeout of iscsi
commands. The default will remain no timeout, but this can
be changed via cmdline parameters, e.g.:
qemu -iscsi timeout=30 -drive file=iscsi://...
If a timeout occurs a reconnect is scheduled and the timed out command
will be requeued for processing after a successful reconnect.
The required API call iscsi_set_timeout is present since libiscsi

a nested table where each user creatable object can be documented.
The existing memory-backend-file, rng-random and rng-egd object

Add new "arg" sub-argument to the --semihosting-config allowing the user
to pass multiple input arguments separately. It is required for example
by UHI semihosting to construct argc and argv.
Also, update ARM semihosting to support new option (at the moment it is
the only target which cares about arguments).
If the semihosting is enabled and no semihosting args have been specified,
then fall back to -kernel/-append. The -append string is split on whitespace
before initializing semihosting.argv[1..n]; this is different from what
QEMU MIPS machines' pseudo-bootloaders do (i.e. argv[1] contains the whole
-append), but is more intuitive from UHI user's point of view and Linux
kernel just does not care as it concatenates argv[1..n] into single cmdline
string anyway.

The throttle group support use a cooperative round robin scheduling
algorithm.
The principles of the algorithm are simple:
- Each BDS of the group is used as a token in a circular way.
- The active BDS computes if a wait must be done and arms the right
timer.
- If a wait must be done the token timer will be armed so the token
will become the next active BDS.

Allow user supplied files to be inserted into the fw_cfg
device before starting the guest. Since fw_cfg_add_file()
already disallows duplicate fw_cfg file names, qemu will
exit with an error message if the user supplies multiple
blobs with the same fw_cfg file name, or if a blob name
collides with a fw_cfg name programmatically added from
within the QEMU source code. A warning message will be
printed if the fw_cfg item name does not begin with the

As of commit 076b35b5a (machine: add default_ram_size to machine
class) we no longer have a global default ram size, but instead
machine specific defaults. When invoking qemu --help we don't know
which machine you selected, so we can't tell the user the default RAM
size in the help text anymore now.
Thus I don't see an easy way to expose the default ram size to the
user in the help text. The easiest option IMHO is to just drop this
piece of information.

-global does not work for drivers that have a dot in their name, such as
cfi.pflash01. This is just a parsing limitation, because such globals
can be declared easily inside a -readconfig file.
To allow this usage, support the full QemuOpts key/value syntax for -global
too, for example "-global driver=cfi.pflash01,property=secure,value=on".
The two formats do not conflict, because the key/value syntax does not have
a period before the first equal sign.

Looking at the output of "qemu-system-xxx -help", you easily get
the impression that "-net" is the preferred way instead of "-netdev"
to specify host network interface, since the "-net" option is
omnipresent but the "-netdev" option is only listed as a one-liner
at the end. This is ugly since "-net" is considered as legacy and
even might be removed one day. Thus, this patch switches the output
to explain the host network interfaces with the "-netdev" option
instead, moving the old "-net" option into some few lines at
the end.

The usual semihosting behaviour is to process the system calls locally and
return; unfortuantelly the initial implementation dinamically changed the
target to GDB during debug sessions, which, for the usual arm-none-eabi-gdb,
is not implemented. The result was that during debug sessions the semihosting
calls were discarded.
This patch adds a configuration variable and an option to set it on the
command line:
-semihosting-config [enable=on|off,]target=native|gdb|auto
This option enables semihosting and defines where the semihosting calls will
be addressed, to QEMU ('native') or to GDB ('gdb'). The default is auto, which
means 'gdb' during debug sessions and 'native' otherwise.

1. s390x/kvm: avoid synchronize_rcu's in kernel
----------------------------------------------
The first patches change s390x/kvm code to issue VCPU specific ioctls
from the VCPU thread. This will avoid unnecessary synchronize_rcu in
the kernel, which caused a noticably slowdown with many guest CPUs.
It speeds up all start/restart/reset operations involving cpus
drastically.
2. s390-ccw.img: block size and DASD format support
---------------------------------------------------
The second part changes the s390-ccw bios to IPL (boot) more disk
formats than before. Furthermore a small fix is made to the console
output of the bios.
3. s390: Support for Hotplug of Standby Memory
----------------------------------------------
The third part adds support in s390 for a pool of standby memory,
which can be set online/offline by the guest (ie, via chmem).
The standby pool of memory is allocated as the difference between
the initial memory setting and the maxmem setting.
As part of this work, additional results are provided for the
Read SCP Information SCLP, and new implentation is added for the
Read Storage Element Information, Attach Storage Element,
Assign Storage and Unassign Storage SCLPs, which enables the s390
guest to manipulate the standby memory pool.
This patchset is based on work originally done by Jeng-Fang (Nick)
Wang.
Sample qemu command snippet:
qemu -machine s390-ccw-virtio -m 1024M,maxmem=2048M,slots=32 -enable-kvm
This will allocate 1024M of active memory, and another 1024M
of standby memory. Example output from s390-tools lsmem:
=============================================================================
0x0000000000000000-0x000000000fffffff 256 online no 0-127

Memory device size : 2 MB
Memory block size : 256 MB
Total online memory : 1024 MB
Total offline memory: 1024 MB
The guest can dynamically enable part or all of the standby pool
via the s390-tools chmem, for example:
chmem -e 512M
And can attempt to dynamically disable:
chmem -d 512M

Merge remote-tracking branch 'remotes/borntraeger/tags/kvm-s390-20140901' into staging
s390x/kvm: Several updates/fixes/features
1. s390x/kvm: avoid synchronize_rcu's in kernel
----------------------------------------------
The first patches change s390x/kvm code to issue VCPU specific ioctls
from the VCPU thread. This will avoid unnecessary synchronize_rcu in
the kernel, which caused a noticably slowdown with many guest CPUs.
It speeds up all start/restart/reset operations involving cpus
drastically.
2. s390-ccw.img: block size and DASD format support
---------------------------------------------------
The second part changes the s390-ccw bios to IPL (boot) more disk
formats than before. Furthermore a small fix is made to the console
output of the bios.
3. s390: Support for Hotplug of Standby Memory
----------------------------------------------
The third part adds support in s390 for a pool of standby memory,
which can be set online/offline by the guest (ie, via chmem).
The standby pool of memory is allocated as the difference between
the initial memory setting and the maxmem setting.
As part of this work, additional results are provided for the
Read SCP Information SCLP, and new implentation is added for the
Read Storage Element Information, Attach Storage Element,
Assign Storage and Unassign Storage SCLPs, which enables the s390
guest to manipulate the standby memory pool.
This patchset is based on work originally done by Jeng-Fang (Nick)
Wang.
Sample qemu command snippet:
qemu -machine s390-ccw-virtio -m 1024M,maxmem=2048M,slots=32 -enable-kvm
This will allocate 1024M of active memory, and another 1024M
of standby memory. Example output from s390-tools lsmem:
=============================================================================
0x0000000000000000-0x000000000fffffff 256 online no 0-127
0x0000000010000000-0x000000001fffffff 256 online yes 128-255
0x0000000020000000-0x000000003fffffff 512 online no 256-511
0x0000000040000000-0x000000007fffffff 1024 offline - 512-1023
Memory device size : 2 MB
Memory block size : 256 MB
Total online memory : 1024 MB
Total offline memory: 1024 MB
The guest can dynamically enable part or all of the standby pool
via the s390-tools chmem, for example:
chmem -e 512M
And can attempt to dynamically disable:
chmem -d 512M

In order to access VMware ESX efficiently, we need to send a session
cookie. This patch is very simple and just allows you to send that
session cookie. It punts on the question of how you get the session
cookie in the first place, but in practice you can just run a `curl'
command against the server and extract the cookie that way.
To use it, add file.cookie to the curl URL. For example:
$ qemu-img info 'json: {

The curl hardcoded timeout (5 seconds) sometimes is not long
enough depending on the remote server configuration and network
traffic. The user should be able to set how much long he is
willing to wait for the connection.
Adding a new option to set this timeout gives the user this
flexibility. The previous default timeout of 5 seconds will be
used if this option is not present.

2. Accroding to the machine option, q35 will initialize the Intel IOMMU and

The JSON-format output can then be used to compare the vmstate info for

This patch adds support for a network backend based on netmap.
netmap is a framework for high speed packet I/O. You can use it
to build extremely fast traffic generators, monitors, software
switches or network middleboxes. Its companion software switch
VALE lets you interconnect virtual machines.
netmap and VALE are implemented as a non-intrusive kernel module,
support NICs from multiple vendors, are part of standard FreeBSD
distributions and available in source format for Linux too.
To compile QEMU with netmap support, use the following configure
options:
./configure [...] --enable-netmap --extra-cflags=-I/path/to/netmap/sys
where "/path/to/netmap" contains the netmap source code, available at
http://info.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/netmap/

This reverts commit 6a85e60cb9.
Commit 51767e7 "qemu-char: Add new char backend CirMemCharDriver"
introduced a memory ring buffer character device driver named
"memory". Commit 3949e59 "qemu-char: Saner naming of memchar stuff &
doc fixes" changed the driver name to "ringbuf", along with a whole
bunch of other names, with the following rationale:
Naming is a mess. The code calls the device driver
CirMemCharDriver, the public API calls it "memory", "memchardev",
or "memchar", and the special commands are named like
"memchar-FOO". "memory" is a particularly unfortunate choice,
because there's another character device driver called
MemoryDriver. Moreover, the device's distinctive property is that
it's a ring buffer, not that's in memory.
This is what we released in 1.4.0.
Unfortunately, the rename missed a critical instance of "memory": the
actual driver name. Thus, the new device could be used only by an
entirely undocumented name. The documented name did not work.
Bummer.
Commit 6a85e60 fixes this by changing the documentation to match the
code. It also changes some, but not all related occurences of
"ringbuf" to "memory". Left alone are identifiers in C code, HMP and
QMP commands. The latter are external interface, so they can't be
changed.
The result is an inconsistent mess. Moreover, "memory" is a rotten
name. The device's distinctive property is that it's a ring buffer,
not that's in memory. User's don't care whether it's in RAM, flash,
or carved into chocolate tablets by Oompa Loompas.
Revert the commit. Next commit will fix just the bug.

[Issue]
When we offer a customer support service and a problem happens
in a customer's system, we try to understand the problem by
comparing what the customer reports with message logs of the
customer's system.
In this case, we often need to know when the problem happens.
But, currently, there is no timestamp in qemu's error messages.
Therefore, we may not be able to understand the problem based on
error messages.
[Solution]
Add a timestamp to qemu's error message logged by
error_report() with g_time_val_to_iso8601().

With mon:stdio you can exit the VM by switching to the monitor and
sending the "quit" command. It is then useful to pass Ctrl-C to the
VM instead of exiting.
This in turn lets us stop tying the default signal handling behavior
to -nographic, removing gratuitous differences between "-display none"
and "-nographic".
This patch changes behavior for "-display none -serial mon:stdio", as
expected, but not for "-display none -serial stdio".

This also introduces a new suboption, "cpus=",

-smp n,sockets=y
is the same as
-smp cpus=n,sockets=y

We still don't validate relations between different

Added TLS support to the VNC QEMU Websockets implementation.
VNC-TLS needs to be enabled for this feature to be used.
The required certificates are specified as in case of VNC-TLS
with the VNC parameter "x509=<path>".
If the server certificate isn't signed by a rooth authority it needs to
be manually imported in the browser because at least in case of Firefox
and Chrome there is no user dialog, the connection just gets canceled.
As a side note VEncrypt over Websocket doesn't work atm because TLS can't
be stacked in the current implementation. (It also didn't work before)
Nevertheless to my knowledge there is no HTML 5 VNC client which supports
it and the Websocket connection can be encrypted with regular TLS now so
it should be fine for most use cases.

qemu-system-x86_64 -drive file=ssh://hostname/some/image
QEMU will ssh into 'hostname' and open '/some/image' which is made
available as a standard block device.
You can specify a username (ssh://user@host/...) and/or a port number
(ssh://host:port/...). You can also use an alternate syntax using
properties (file.user, file.host, file.port, file.path).
Current limitations:
- Authentication must be done without passwords or passphrases, using
ssh-agent. Other authentication methods are not supported.
- Uses a single connection, instead of concurrent AIO with multiple
SSH connections.
This is implemented using libssh2 on the client side. The server just
requires a regular ssh daemon with sftp-server support. Most ssh
daemons on Unix/Linux systems will work out of the box.

This patch adds support for cancelling an executing TPM command.
In Linux for example a user can cancel a command through the TPM's
sysfs 'cancel' entry using
echo "1" > /sysfs/class/misc/tpm0/device/cancel
This patch propagates the cancellation of a command inside a VM
to the host TPM's sysfs entry.
It also uses the possibility to cancel the command before QEMU VM
shutdown or reboot, which helps in preventing QEMU from hanging while
waiting for the completion of the command.
To relieve higher layers or users from having to determine the TPM's
cancel sysfs entry, the driver searches for the entry in well known
locations.

This patch is based of off version 9 of Stefan Berger's patch series
"QEMU Trusted Platform Module (TPM) integration"
and adds a new backend driver for it.
This patch adds a passthrough backend driver for passing commands sent to the
emulated TPM device directly to a TPM device opened on the host machine.
Thus it is possible to use a hardware TPM device in a system running on QEMU,
providing the ability to access a TPM in a special state (e.g. after a Trusted
Boot).
This functionality is being used in the acTvSM Trusted Virtualization Platform
which is available on [1].
Usage example:
qemu-system-x86_64 -tpmdev passthrough,id=tpm0,path=/dev/tpm0 \
-device tpm-tis,tpmdev=tpm0 \
-cdrom test.iso -boot d
Some notes about the host TPM:
The TPM needs to be enabled and activated. If that's not the case one
has to go through the BIOS/UEFI and enable and activate that TPM for TPM
commands to work as expected.
It may be necessary to boot the kernel using tpm_tis.force=1 in the boot
command line or 'modprobe tpm_tis force=1' in case of using it as a module.

This patch adds support for TPM command line options.
The command line options supported here are
./qemu-... -tpmdev passthrough,path=<path to TPM device>,id=<id>
-device tpm-tis,tpmdev=<id>,id=<other id>
and
./qemu-... -tpmdev help
where the latter works similar to -soundhw help and shows a list of
available TPM backends (for example 'passthrough').
Using the type parameter, the backend is chosen, i.e., 'passthrough' for the
passthrough driver. The interpretation of the other parameters along
with determining whether enough parameters were provided is pushed into
the backend driver, which needs to implement the interface function
'create' and return a TPMDriverOpts structure if the VM can be started or
'NULL' if not enough or bad parameters were provided.
Monitor support for 'info tpm' has been added. It for example prints the
following:
(qemu) info tpm
TPM devices:
tpm0: model=tpm-tis
\ tpm0: type=passthrough,path=/dev/tpm0,cancel-path=/sys/devices/pnp0/00:09/cancel

Switch the default for qemu_log logging output from "/tmp/qemu.log"
to stderr. This is an incompatible change in some sense, but logging
is mostly used for debugging purposes so it shouldn't affect production
use. The previous behaviour can be obtained by adding "-D /tmp/qemu.log"
to the command line.
This change requires us to:
* update all the documentation/help text (we take the opportunity
to smooth out minor inconsistencies between the phrasing in
linux-user/bsd-user/system help messages)
* make linux-user and bsd-user defer to qemu-log for the default
logging destination rather than overriding it themselves
* ensure that all logfile closing is done via qemu_log_close()
and that that function doesn't close stderr
as well as the obvious change to the behaviour of do_qemu_set_log()
when no logfile name has been specified.

New device, has never been released, so we can still improve things
without worrying about compatibility.
Naming is a mess. The code calls the device driver CirMemCharDriver,
the public API calls it "memory", "memchardev", or "memchar", and the
special commands are named like "memchar-FOO". "memory" is a
particularly unfortunate choice, because there's another character
device driver called MemoryDriver. Moreover, the device's distinctive
property is that it's a ring buffer, not that's in memory. Therefore:
* Rename CirMemCharDriver to RingBufCharDriver, and call the thing a
"ringbuf" in the API.
* Rename QMP and HMP commands from memchar-FOO to ringbuf-FOO.
* Rename device parameter from maxcapacity to size (simple words are
good for you).
* Clearly mark the parameter as optional in documentation.
* Fix error reporting so that chardev-add reports to current monitor,
not stderr.
* Replace cirmem in C identifiers by ringbuf.
* Rework documentation. Document the impact of our crappy UTF-8
handling on reading.
* QMP examples that even work.
I could split this up into multiple commits, but they'd change the
same documentation lines multiple times. Not worth it.

This patch adds basic Websocket Protocol version 13 - RFC 6455 - support
to QEMU VNC. Binary encoding support on the client side is mandatory.
Because of the GnuTLS requirement the Websockets implementation is
optional (--enable-vnc-ws).
To activate Websocket support the VNC option "websocket"is used, for
example "-vnc :0,websocket".
The listen port for Websocket connections is (5700 + display) so if
QEMU VNC is started with :0 the Websocket port would be 5700.
As an alternative the Websocket port could be manually specified by
using ",websocket=<port>" instead.
Parts of the implementation base on Anthony Liguori's QEMU Websocket

This option can be used for passing file descriptors on the
command line. It mirrors the existing add-fd QMP command which
allows an fd to be passed to QEMU via SCM_RIGHTS and added to an
fd set.
This can be combined with commands such as -drive to link file
descriptors in an fd set to a drive:
qemu-kvm -add-fd fd=3,set=2,opaque="rdwr:/path/to/file"
-add-fd fd=4,set=2,opaque="rdonly:/path/to/file"
-drive file=/dev/fdset/2,index=0,media=disk
This example adds dups of fds 3 and 4, and the accompanying opaque
strings to the fd set with ID=2. qemu_open() already knows how
to handle a filename of this format. qemu_open() searches the
corresponding fd set for an fd and when it finds a match, QEMU
goes on to use a dup of that fd just like it would have used an
fd that it opened itself.

'help' rather than '?' for the various "list valid values for this
option" cases. '?' is deprecated (as it can fail confusingly if
not quoted), so it's better to steer users towards 'help'. ('?'
still works, for backwards compatibility.)
This is the -help option part of the change otherwise done in
commit c8057f9, since we are now past release 1.2 and free to
change our help text without worrying about breaking libvirt.

Added an option to let qemu transfer a configuration file to bios,
"etc/boot-fail-wait", which could be specified by command
-boot reboot-timeout=T
T have a max value of 0xffff, unit is ms.
With this option, guest will wait for a given time if not find
bootabled device, then reboot. If reboot-timeout is '-1', guest
will not reboot, qemu passes '-1' to bios by default.
This feature need the new seabios's support.
Seabios pulls the value from the fwcfg "file" interface, this
interface is used because SeaBIOS needs a reliable way of
obtaining a name, value size, and value. It in no way requires
that there be a real file on the user's host machine.

and qemu tends to generate them significantly more often than
real hardware.
Examples:

This patch adds some optional compatibility hacks (default
disabled) to allow Microport UNIX to function under qemu.
I've tried to structure it to be easy to add more hacks for other
old CGA programs, if anyone ever needs them.
Microport UNIX System V/386 v 2.1 (ca 1987) tries to program
the CGA registers directly with neither the assistance of BIOS, nor
with proper handling of EGA/VGA-only registers. Note that it didn't
work on real VGA hardware, either (although in that case, the most
obvious problems seemed to be out-of-range hsync and/or vsync
signalling, rather than the issues in this patch).
Eventually real MDA and/or CGA support might provide an alternative to
this patch, although a hybrid approach like this patch might still
be useful in marginal cases.

Add a new '[,dump-guest-core=on|off]' option to the '-machine' option. When
'dump-guest-core=off' is specified, guest memory is omitted from the core dump.
The default behavior continues to be to include guest memory when a core dump is

Is anything additional required to preserve this setting for migration or

This patch updates the iscsi layer to automatically pick a 'unique'
initiator-name based on the name of the vm in case the user has not set
an explicit iqn-name to use.
Create a new function qemu_get_vm_name() that returns the name of the VM,
if specified.
This way we can thus create default names to use as the initiator name
based on the guest session.
If the VM is not named via the '-name' command line argument, the iscsi
initiator-name used wiull simply be
iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm
If a name for the VM was specified with the '-name' option, iscsi will
use a default initiatorname of
iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm:<name>
These names are just the default iscsi initiator name that qemu will
generate/use only when the user has not set an explicit initiator name
via the commandlines or config files.

FIPS 140-2 requires disabling certain ciphers, including DES, which is used
by VNC to obscure passwords when they are sent over the network. The
solution for FIPS users is to disable the use of VNC password auth when the
host system is operating in FIPS compliance mode and the user has specified
'-enable-fips' on the QEMU command line.
This patch causes QEMU to emit a message to stderr when the host system is
running in FIPS mode and a VNC password was specified on the commend line.
If the system is not running in FIPS mode, or is running in FIPS mode but
VNC password authentication was not requested, QEMU operates normally.

For command line options which permit '?' meaning 'please list the
permitted values', add support for 'help' as a synonym, by abstracting
the check out into a helper function.
This change means that in some cases where we were being lazy in
our string parsing, "?junk" will now be rejected as an invalid option
rather than being (undocumentedly) treated the same way as "?".
Update the documentation to use 'help' rather than '?', since '?'
is a shell metacharacter and thus prone to fail confusingly if there
is a single character filename in the current working directory and
the '?' has not been escaped. It's therefore better to steer users
towards 'help', though '?' is retained for backwards compatibility.
We do not, however, update the output of the system emulator's -help
(or any documentation autogenerated from the qemu-options.hx which
is the source of the -help text) because libvirt parses our -help
output and will break. At a later date when QEMU provides a better
interface so libvirt can avoid having to do this, we can update the
-help text too.

When using guestfwd=, Qemu only connects the virtual server's TCP port
to a single chardev. This is useless in most cases, as we usually want
to have more than a single connection from the guest to the outside world.
This patch adds a new cmd: target to guestfwd= that allows for execution
of a command on every TCP connection. This leverages the same code as
the -smb parameter, just that here the command is user defined.

The idea behind qtest is pretty simple. Instead of executing a CPU via TCG or
KVM, rely on an external process to send events to the device model that the CPU
would normally generate.
qtest presents itself as an accelerator. In addition, a new option is added to
establish a qtest server (-qtest) that takes a character device. This is what
allows the external process to send CPU events to the device model.
qtest uses a simple line based protocol to send the events. Documentation of
that protocol is in qtest.c.
I considered reusing the monitor for this job. Adding interrupts would be a bit
difficult. In addition, logging would also be difficult.
qtest has extensive logging support. All protocol commands are logged with
time stamps using a new command line option (-qtest-log). Logging is important
since ultimately, this is a feature for debugging.

VNC clients send a shared flag in the client init message. Up to now
qemu completely ignores this. This patch implements shared flag
handling. It comes with three policies: By default qemu behaves as one
would expect: Asking for a exclusive access grants exclusive access to
the client connecting. There is also a desktop sharing mode which
disallows exclusive connects (so one forgetting -shared wouldn't drop
everybody else) and a compatibility mode which mimics the traditional
(but non-conforming) qemu behavior.

The most common use of -net tap is to connect a tap device to a bridge. This
requires the use of a script and running qemu as root in order to allocate a
tap device to pass to the script.
This model is great for portability and flexibility but it's incredibly
difficult to eliminate the need to run qemu as root. The only really viable
mechanism is to use tunctl to create a tap device, attach it to a bridge as
root, and then hand that tap device to qemu. The problem with this mechanism
is that it requires administrator intervention whenever a user wants to create
a guest.
By essentially writing a helper that implements the most common qemu-ifup
script that can be safely given cap_net_admin, we can dramatically simplify
things for non-privileged users. We still support existing -net tap options
as a mechanism for advanced users and backwards compatibility.
Currently, this is very Linux centric but there's really no reason why it
couldn't be extended for other Unixes.
A typical invocation would be similar to one of the following:
qemu linux.img -net bridge -net nic, model=virtio
qemu linux.img -net tap,helper="/usr/local/libexec/qemu-bridge-helper"
-net nic,model=virtio
qemu linux.img -netdev bridge,id=hn0
-device virtio-net-pci,netdev=hn0,id=nic1
qemu linux.img -netdev tap,helper="/usr/local/libexec/qemu-bridge-helper",id=hn0
-device virtio-net-pci,netdev=hn0,id=nic1
The default bridge that we attach to is br0. The thinking is that a distro
could preconfigure such an interface to allow out-of-the-box bridged networking.
Alternatively, if a user wants to use a different bridge, a typical invocation
would be simliar to one of the following:
qemu linux.img -net bridge,br=qemubr0 -net nic,model=virtio
qemu linux.img -net tap,helper="/usr/local/libexec/qemu-bridge-helper --br=qemubr0"
-net nic,model=virtio

The result is that it's now possible to specify whole table
(together with a header) in an external file, instead of just
data portion, with a new file= parameter, but at the same time
it's still possible to specify header fields as before.
Now with the checkpatch.pl formatting fixes, thanks to
Stefan Hajnoczi for suggestions, with changes from
Isaku Yamahata, and with my further refinements.

Added options to let qemu transfer two configuration files to bios:
"bootsplash.bmp" and "etc/boot-menu-wait", which could be specified by command
-boot splash=P,splash-time=T
P is jpg/bmp file name or an absolute path, T have a max value of 0xffff, unit
is ms. With these two options, if user invoke qemu with menu=on option, then
a splash picture would be showed in a given time. For example:
qemu -boot menu=on,splash=/root/boot.bmp,splash-time=5000
would make boot.bmp shown as a brand with 5 seconds in the booting up process.
This feature need the new seabios's support, which could be got from git.

Fix that while still accepting the formerly allowed yes|y|no|n, but

Fix that before this command is set in stone.
Actually, -machine should supersede -M and allow to introduce arbitrary

Turn on SASL support by appending "sasl" to the spice arguments, which
requires that the client use SASL to authenticate with the spice. The
exact choice of authentication method used is controlled from the
system / user's SASL configuration file for the 'qemu' service. This
is typically found in /etc/sasl2/qemu.conf. If running QEMU as an
unprivileged user, an environment variable SASL_CONF_PATH can be used
to make it search alternate locations for the service config. While
some SASL auth methods can also provide data encryption (eg GSSAPI),
it is recommended that SASL always be combined with the 'tls' and
'x509' settings to enable use of SSL and server certificates. This
ensures a data encryption preventing compromise of authentication
credentials.
It requires support from spice 0.8.1.

This option gives the ability to switch one "accelerator" like kvm, xen
or the default one tcg. We can specify more than one accelerator by
separate them by a colon. QEMU will try each one and use the first whose
works.
So,
./qemu -machine accel=xen:kvm:tcg
which would try Xen support first, then KVM and finally TCG if none of
the other works.
By default, QEMU will use TCG. But we can specify another default in the
global configuration file.

qxl is a paravirtual graphics card. The qxl device is the bridge
between the guest and the spice server (aka libspice-server). The
spice server will send the rendering commands to the spice client, which
will actually render them.
The spice server is also able to render locally, which is done in case
the guest wants read something from video memory. Local rendering is
also used to support display over vnc and sdl.
qxl is activated using "-vga qxl". qxl supports multihead, additional
cards can be added via '-device qxl".

Libvirt parses qemu help output to determine qemu features. In particular
it probes for the following: "cache=writethrough|writeback|none". The
addition of the unsafe cache mode was inserted within this string, as
opposed to being added to the end, which impacted libvirt's probe.
Unbreak libvirt by keeping the existing cache modes intact and add
unsafe to the end.
This problem only manifests itself if a caching mode is explicitly
specified in the libvirt xml, in which case older syntax for caching is
passed to qemu, which it no longer understands.

So let's add a new cache value to -drive that allows us to set the cache

This commit converts the virtio-console device to create a new
virtio-serial bus that can host console and generic serial ports. The
file hosting this code is now called virtio-serial-bus.c.
The virtio console is now a very simple qdev device that sits on the
virtio-serial-bus and communicates between the bus and qemu's chardevs.
This commit also includes a few changes to the virtio backing code for
pci and s390 to spawn the virtio-serial bus.
As a result of the qdev conversion, we get rid of a lot of legacy code.
The old-style way of instantiating a virtio console using
-virtioconsole ...
is maintained, but the new, preferred way is to use
-device virtio-serial -device virtconsole,chardev=...
With this commit, multiple devices as well as multiple ports with a
single device can be supported.
For multiple ports support, each port gets an IO vq pair. Since the
guest needs to know in advance how many vqs a particular device will
need, we have to set this number as a property of the virtio-serial
device and also as a config option.
In addition, we also spawn a pair of control IO vqs. This is an internal
channel meant for guest-host communication for things like port
open/close, sending port properties over to the guest, etc.
This commit is a part of a series of other commits to get the full
implementation of multiport support. Future commits will add other
support as well as ride on the savevm version that we bump up here.

Add generic support for debugging consoles (simple I/O ports which
when written to cause debugging output to be written to a target.)
The current implementation matches Bochs' port 0xe9, allowing the same
debugging code to be used for both Bochs and Qemu.
There is no vm state associated with the debugging port, simply
because it has none -- the entire interface is a single, stateless,
write-only port.
Most of the code was cribbed from the serial port driver.
v2: removed non-ISA variants (they can be introduced when/if someone
wants them, using code from the serial port); added configurable
readback (Bochs returns 0xe9 on a read from this register, mimic that
by default) This retains the apparently somewhat controversial user
friendly option, however.
v3: reimplemented the user friendly option as a synthetic option
("-debugcon foo" basically ends up being a parser-level shorthand for
"-chardev stdio,id=debugcon -device isa-debugcon,chardev=debugcon") --
this dramatically reduced the complexity while keeping the same level
of user friendliness.
v4: spaces, not tabs.
v5: update to match current top of tree. Calling qemu_chr_open()
already during parsing no longer works; defer until we are parsing the
other console-like devices.

This patch adds infrastructure and command line option for setting
global defaults for device properties, i.e. you can for example use
-global virtio-blk-pci.vectors=0
to turn off msi by default for all virtio block devices. The config
file syntax is:
[global]
driver = "virtio-blk-pci"
property = "vectors"
value = "0"
This can also be used to set properties for devices which are not
created via -device but implicitly via machine init, i.e.
-global isa-fdc,driveA=<name>
This patch uses the mechanism which configures properties for the
compatibility machine types (pc-0.10 & friends). The command line
takes precedence over the machine type values.
