The current approach to capture the Python version is fragile, as it
was demonstrated by a very specific build of Python 3 on Fedora 29
that, under non-interactive shells would print multiline version
information.
The (badly) stripped version output would be sent to config-host.mak,
producing bad syntax and rendering the makefiles unusable. Now, the
Python versions is printed by configure, but only a simple (and better
controlled variable) indicating whether the build system is using
Python 2 is kept on config-host.mak.

Add a --engine option to select either docker, podman or auto.
Among other advantages, podman allows to run rootless & daemonless
containers, fortunately sharing compatible CLI with docker.
With current podman, we have to use a uidmap trick in order to be able
to rw-share the ccache directory with the container user.
With a user 1000, the default mapping is: 1000 (host) -> 0 (container).
So write access to /var/tmp/ccache ends will end with permission
denied error.
With "--uidmap 1000:0:1 --uidmap 0:1:1000", the mapping is:
1000 (host) -> 0 (container, 1st namespace) -> 1000 (container, 2nd namespace).
(the rest is mumbo jumbo to avoid holes in the range of UIDs)
A future podman version may have an option such as --userns-keep-uid.

icount-based record/replay uses qemu_clock_deadline_ns_all to measure
the period until vCPU may be interrupted.
This function takes in account the virtual timers, because they belong
to the virtual devices that may generate interrupt request or affect
the virtual machine state.
However, there are a subset of virtual timers, that are marked with
'external' flag. These do not change the virtual machine state and
only based on virtual clock. Calculating the deadling using the external
timers breaks the determinism, because they do not belong to the replayed
part of the virtual machine.
This patch fixes the deadline calculation for this case by adding
new parameter for skipping the external timers when it is needed.

support MSA extension are R5600 (mips32r5), and I6400/I6500 (mips64r6).
Therefore, mips32r5 and mips64r6 are the only ISAs that could support
MSA in QEMU. This means mips32r6 currently do not make much sense, and
mips32r5 support for MSA tests is needed, which is done by this patch.

bdrv_has_zero_init() only has meaning for newly created images or image
areas. If the mirror job itself did not create the image, it cannot
rely on bdrv_has_zero_init()'s result to carry any meaning.
This is the case for drive-mirror with mode=existing and always for
blockdev-mirror.
Note that we only have to zero-initialize the target with sync=full,
because other modes actually do not promise that the target will contain
the same data as the source after the job -- sync=top only promises to
copy anything allocated in the top layer, and sync=none will only copy
new I/O. (Which is how mirror has always handled it.)

People often forget to run the iotests before submitting patches or pull
requests - this is likely due to the fact that we do not run the tests
during our mandatory "make check" tests yet. Now that we've got a proper
"auto" group of iotests that should be fine to run in every environment,
we can enable the iotests during "make check" again by running the "auto"
tests by default from the check-block.sh script.
Some cases still need to be checked first, though: iotests need bash and
GNU sed (otherwise they fail), and if gprof is enabled, it spoils the
output of some test cases causing them to fail. So if we detect that one
of the required programs is missing or that gprof is enabled, we still
have to skip the iotests to avoid failures.
And finally, since we are using check-block.sh now again, this patch also
removes the qemu-iotests-quick.sh script since we do not need that anymore
(and having two shell wrapper scripts around the block tests seems rather
confusing than helpful).

Because the new-style python tests don't use the iotests.main() test
launcher, we don't turn on the debugger logging for these scripts
when invoked via ./check -d.
Refactor the launcher shim into new and old style shims so that they
share environmental configuration.
Two cleanup notes: debug was not actually used as a global, and there
was no reason to create a class in an inner scope just to achieve
default variables; we can simply create an instance of the runner with
the values we want instead.

In my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h triggers a
recompile of some 5400 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and
objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h).
Almost a third of its inclusions are actually superfluous. Delete
them. Downgrade two more to qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h, and move one
from char/serial.h to char/serial.c.
hw/semihosting/config.c, monitor/monitor.c, qdev-monitor.c, and
stubs/semihost.c define variables declared in sysemu/sysemu.h without
including it. The compiler is cool with that, but include it anyway.
This doesn't reduce actual use much, as it's still included into

Many places including hw/qdev-properties.h (directly or via hw/qdev.h)
actually need only hw/qdev-core.h. Include hw/qdev-core.h there
instead.
hw/qdev.h is actually pointless: all it does is include hw/qdev-core.h
and hw/qdev-properties.h, which in turn includes hw/qdev-core.h.
Replace the remaining uses of hw/qdev.h by hw/qdev-properties.h.
While there, delete a few superfluous inclusions of hw/qdev-core.h.
Touching hw/qdev-properties.h now recompiles some 1200 objects.

This fixes devices like IDE that can still start new requests from I/O
handlers in the CPU thread while the block backend is drained.
The basic assumption is that in a drain section, no new requests should
be allowed through a BlockBackend (blk_drained_begin/end don't exist,
we get drain sections only on the node level). However, there are two
special cases where requests should not be queued:
1. Block jobs: We already make sure that block jobs are paused in a
drain section, so they won't start new requests. However, if the
drain_begin is called on the job's BlockBackend first, it can happen
that we deadlock because the job stays busy until it reaches a pause
point - which it can't if its requests aren't processed any more.
The proper solution here would be to make all requests through the
job's filter node instead of using a BlockBackend. For now, just
disabling request queuing on the job BlockBackend is simpler.
2. In test cases where making requests through bdrv_* would be
cumbersome because we'd need a BdrvChild. As we already got the
functionality to disable request queuing from 1., use it in tests,
too, for convenience.

Before HEAD^, copy offloading broke this in two ways:
(1) The target image differs from the reference image (what the source

(2) But you will not see that in the failing output, because the job

Currently, 030 just compares the error class, which does not say
anything.
Before HEAD^ added throttling to test_overlapping_4, that test actually
usually failed because node2 was already gone, not because it was the

Currently, TestParallelOps in 030 creates images that are too small for
job throttling to be effective. This is reflected by the fact that it
never undoes the throttling.
Increase the image size and undo the throttling when the job should be
completed. Also, add throttling in test_overlapping_4, or the jobs may
not be so overlapping after all. In fact, the error usually emitted
here is that node2 simply does not exist, not that overlapping jobs are
not allowed -- the fact that this job ignores the exact error messages
and just checks the error class is something that should be fixed in a
follow-up patch.

The test aarch64 kernel is in an array defined with
unsigned char aarch64_kernel[] = { [...] }
which means it could be any size; currently it's quite small.
However we write it to a file using init_bootfile(), which
writes exactly 512 bytes to the file. This will break if
we ever end up with a kernel larger than that, and will
read garbage off the end of the array in the current setup
where the kernel is smaller.
Make init_bootfile() take an argument giving the length of
the data to write. This allows us to use it for all architectures
(previously s390 had a special-purpose init_bootfile_s390x
which hardcoded the file to write so it could write the
correct length). We assert that the x86 bootfile really is
exactly 512 bytes as it should be (and as we were previously
just assuming it was).

Add new version of Cascadelake-Server CPU model, setting
stepping=5 and enabling the IA32_ARCH_CAPABILITIES MSR
with some flags.
The new feature will introduce a new host software requirement,
breaking our CPU model runnability promises. This means we can't
enable the new CPU model version by default in QEMU 4.1, because
management software isn't ready yet to resolve CPU model aliases.
This is why "pc-*-4.1" will keep returning Cascadelake-Server-v1
if "-cpu Cascadelake-Server" is specified.
Includes a test case to ensure the right combinations of
machine-type + CPU model + command-line feature flags will work

This will make unversioned CPU models behavior depend on the
machine type:
* "pc-*-4.0" and older will not report them as aliases.
This is done to keep compatibility with older QEMU versions
after management software starts translating aliases.
* "pc-*-4.1" will translate unversioned CPU models to -v1.
This is done to keep compatibility with existing management
software, that still relies on CPU model runnability promises.
* "none" will translate unversioned CPU models to their latest
version. This is planned become the default in future machine
types (probably in pc-*-4.3).

This brings my testing back to green on all CI services. Please note
the BSD installs will throw out some warnings during the setup phase.
They shouldn't re-occur once the images are built. NetBSD has been
dropped for now given slow install issues.

Currently libvhost-user is hardcoded to at most 8 virtqueues. The
device backend should decide the number of virtqueues, not
libvhost-user. This is important for multiqueue device backends where
the guest driver needs an accurate number of virtqueues.
This change breaks libvhost-user and libvhost-user-glib API stability.
There is no stability guarantee yet, so make this change now and update
all in-tree library users.
This patch touches up vhost-user-blk, vhost-user-gpu, vhost-user-input,
vhost-user-scsi, and vhost-user-bridge. If the device has a fixed
number of queues that exact number is used. Otherwise the previous
default of 8 virtqueues is used.
vu_init() and vug_init() can now fail if malloc() returns NULL. I
considered aborting with an error in libvhost-user but it should be safe
to instantiate new vhost-user instances at runtime without risk of
terminating the process. Therefore callers need to handle the vu_init()
failure now.
vhost-user-blk and vhost-user-scsi duplicate virtqueue index checks that
are already performed by libvhost-user. This code would need to be
modified to use max_queues but remove it completely instead since it's
redundant.

We make a few sub-directories recursively, in particular
$(TARGET_DIRS).
For goal "all", we do it the nice way: "all" has a prerequisite
subdir-T for each T in $(TARGET_DIRS), and T's recipe runs make
recursively. Behaves nicely with -j and -k.
For other goals such as "clean" and "install", the recipe runs make
recursively in a for loop. Ignores -j and -k.
The next commit will fix that for "clean" and "install". This commit
prepares the ground by renaming the targets we use for "all" to
include the goal for the sub-make. This will permit reusing them for
goals other than "all".
Targets subdir-T for T in $(TARGET_DIRS) run "make all" in T. Rename
to T/all, and declare phony.
Targets romsubdir-R for R in $(ROMS) run "make" in pc-bios/R. Default
goal is "all" for all R. Rename to pc-bios/R/all, and declare phony.
The remainder are renamed just for consistency.
Target subdir-dtc runs "make libbft/libfdt.a" in dtc. Rename to
dtc/all, and declare phony.
Target subdir-capstone runs make $(BUILD_DIR)/capstone/$(LIBCAPSTONE)
in $(SRC_PATH)/capstone. Rename to capstone/all, and declare phony.
Target subdir-slirp runs "make" in $(SRC_PATH)/slirp. Default goal is
all, which builds $(BUILD_DIR)/libslirp.a. Rename to slirp/all, and
declare phony.

The bottom node is the intermediate block device that has the base as its
backing image. It is used instead of the base node while a block stream
job is running to avoid dependency on the base that may change due to the
parallel jobs. The change may take place due to a filter node as well that
is inserted between the base and the intermediate bottom node. It occurs
when the base node is the top one for another commit or stream job.
After the introduction of the bottom node, don't freeze its backing child,
that's the base, anymore.

During a sector erase (but not a chip erase), the embeded erase program
can be suspended. Once suspended, the sectors not selected for erasure
may be read and programmed. Autoselect mode is allowed during erase
suspend mode. Presumably, CFI queries are similarly allowed so this
commit allows them as well.
Since guest firmware can use status bits DQ7, DQ6, DQ3, and DQ2 to
determine the current state of sector erasure, these bits are properly
implemented.

After two unlock cycles and a sector erase command, the AMD flash chips
start a 50 us erase time out. Any additional sector erase commands add a
sector to be erased and restart the 50 us timeout. During the timeout,
status bit DQ3 is cleared. After the time out, DQ3 is asserted during
erasure.

Some flash chips support sectors of different sizes. For example, the
AMD AM29LV160DT has 31 64 kB sectors, one 32 kB sector, two 8 kB
sectors, and a 16 kB sector, in that order. The AM29LV160DB has those in
the reverse order.
The `num-blocks` and `sector-length` properties work exactly as they did
before: a flash device with uniform sector lengths. To get non-uniform
sector lengths for up to four regions, the following properties may be
set
- region 0. `num-blocks0` and `sector-length0`;
- region 1. `num-blocks1` and `sector-length1`;
- region 2. `num-blocks2` and `sector-length2`; and
- region 3. `num-blocks3` and `sector-length3`.
If the uniform and nonuniform properties are set, then both must specify
a flash device with the same total size. It would be better to disallow
both being set, or make `num-blocks0` and `sector-length0` alias
`num-blocks` and `sector-length`, but that would make testing currently
impossible.

of libssh2. The libssh library has various advantages over libssh2:
- easier API for authentication (for example for using ssh-agent)
- easier API for known_hosts handling
- supports newer types of keys in known_hosts
Use APIs/features available in libssh 0.8 conditionally, to support
older versions (which are not recommended though).

1. assertions actually duplicated by assert(!bs->refcnt)
2. trace-point seems not enough reason to change stream_start to return

3. Restricting creation of two jobs based on same bs is bad idea, as
3.1 Some jobs creates filters to be their main node, so, this check
don't actually prevent creating second job on same real node (which

This patch changes the handling of the mmconfig area. Thanks to the
pci(e) expander devices we already have the logic to exclude address
ranges from PCI0._CRS. We can simply add the mmconfig address range
to the list get it excluded as well.
With that in place we can go with a fixed pci hole which covers the
whole area from the end of (low) ram to the ioapic.
This will make the whole logic alot less fragile. No matter where the
firmware places the mmconfig xbar, things should work correctly. The
guest also gets a bit more PCI address space (seabios boot):
# cat /proc/iomem
[ ... ]
7ffdd000-7fffffff : reserved
80000000-afffffff : PCI Bus 0000:00 <<-- this is new
b0000000-bfffffff : PCI MMCONFIG 0000 [bus 00-ff]

c0000000-febfffff : PCI Bus 0000:00
f8000000-fbffffff : 0000:00:01.0

This makes the output reliable. We do not wait for any more progress if
the job's current-progress already matches its total-progress.
Unfortunately, there is a bug: Right after the job has been started,
it's possible that total-progress is still 0. In that case, we may skip
the first progress-making step and keep ending up 64 kB short.
To fix that bug, we can simply wait for total-progress to reach 4 MB
(the image size) after starting the job.

It is possible for an empty file to take up blocks on a filesystem, for
example:
$ qemu-img create -f raw test.img 1G
Formatting 'test.img', fmt=raw size=1073741824
$ mkfs.ext4 -I 128 -q test.img
$ mkdir test-mount
$ sudo mount -o loop test.img test-mount
$ sudo touch test-mount/test-file
$ stat -c 'blocks=%b' test-mount/test-file
blocks=8
These extra blocks (one cluster) are apparently used for metadata,
because they are always there, on top of blocks used for data:
$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=test-mount/test-file bs=1M count=1
1+0 records in
1+0 records out
1048576 bytes (1.0 MB, 1.0 MiB) copied, 0.00135339 s, 775 MB/s
$ stat -c 'blocks=%b' test-mount/test-file
blocks=2056
Make iotest 175 take this into account.

common.nbd's nbd_server_set_tcp_port() tries to find a free port, and
then uses it for the whole test run. However, this is racy because even
if the port was free at the beginning, there is no guarantee it will
continue to be available. Therefore, 233 currently cannot reliably be
run concurrently with other NBD TCP tests.
This patch addresses the problem by dropping nbd_server_set_tcp_port(),
and instead finding a new port every time nbd_server_start_tcp_socket()
is invoked. For this, we run qemu-nbd with --fork and on error evaluate
the output to see whether it contains "Address already in use". If so,
we try the next port.
On success, we still want to continually redirect the output from
qemu-nbd to stderr. To achieve both, we redirect qemu-nbd's stderr to a
FIFO that we then open in bash. If the parent process exits with status
0 (which means that the server has started successfully), we launch a
background cat process that copies the FIFO to stderr. On failure, we
read the whole content into a variable and then evaluate it.
While at it, use --fork in nbd_server_start_unix_socket(), too. Doing
so allows us to drop nbd_server_wait_for_*_socket().
Note that the reason common.nbd did not use --fork before is that
qemu-nbd did not have --pid-file.

qemu_nbd_pipe() currently unconditionally reads qemu-nbd's output. That
is not ideal because qemu-nbd may keep stderr open after the parent
process has exited.
Currently, the only user of qemu_nbd_pipe() is 147, which discards the
whole output if the parent process returned success and only evaluates
it on error. Therefore, we can replace qemu_nbd_pipe() by
qemu_nbd_early_pipe() that does the same: Discard the output on success,
and return it on error.

Sometimes, the behaviour of QEMU changes without a change in the QMP
syntax (usually by allowing values or operations that previously
resulted in an error). QMP clients may still need to know whether
they can rely on the changed behavior.
Let's add feature flags to the QAPI schema language, so that we can make
such changes visible with schema introspection.
An example for a schema definition using feature flags looks like this:
{ 'struct': 'TestType',
'data': { 'number': 'int' },
'features': [ 'allow-negative-numbers' ] }
Introspection information then looks like this:
{ "name": "TestType", "meta-type": "object",
"members": [
{ "name": "number", "type": "int" } ],
"features": [ "allow-negative-numbers" ] }
This patch implements feature flags only for struct types. We'll
implement them more widely as needed.

Commit 70ff5b07 wanted to move the diff between actual and reference
output to the end after printing the test result line. It really only
copied it, though, so the diff is now displayed twice. Remove the old
one.

No reason to use the unchecked version in tests, even more so when these
are the last callers of bdrv_set_aio_context() outside of block.c.

This tests that devices refuse to be attached to a node that has already
been moved to a different iothread if they can't be or aren't configured
to work in the same iothread.

This tests that blockdev-add can correctly add a qcow2 overlay to an
image used by a virtio-scsi disk in an iothread. The interesting point
here is whether the newly added node gets correctly moved into the
iothread AioContext.
If it isn't, we get an assertion failure in virtio-scsi while processing
the next request:
virtio_scsi_ctx_check: Assertion `blk_get_aio_context(d->conf.blk) == s->ctx' failed.

A node should only be in a non-default AioContext if a user is attached
to it that requires this. When the last parent of a node is gone, it can
move back to the main AioContext.

Test that BlockBackends preserve their assigned AioContext even when the
root node goes away. Inserting a new root node will move it to the right
AioContext.

Opening a new parent node for a node that has already been moved into a
different AioContext must cause the new parent to move into the same
context.

So far, we only made sure that updating the AioContext of a node
affected the whole subtree. However, if a node is newly attached to a
new parent, we also need to make sure that both the subtree of the node
and the parent are in the same AioContext. This tries to move the new
child node to the parent AioContext and returns an error if this isn't
possible.
BlockBackends now actually apply their AioContext to their root node.
