The output of "-cpu help" is currently rather confusing to the users:
It might not be fully clear which part of the output defines the CPU
names since the CPU names contain white spaces (which we later have to
convert into dashes internally). At best it's at least a nuisance since
the users might need to specify the CPU names with quoting on the command
line if they are not aware of the fact that the CPU names could be written
with dashes instead. So let's finally clean up this mess by using dashes
instead of white spaces for the CPU names, like we're doing it internally
later (and like we're doing it in most other targets of QEMU).
Note that it is still possible to pass the CPU names with spaces to the
"-cpu" option, since sparc_cpu_type_name() still translates those to "-".

Commit b447378e12 ("qom/object: Limit type names to alphanumerical ...")
cut down the amount of allowed characters for QOM types to a saner set.
The "+" character was meant to be included in this set, so we had to
add a hack there to still allow the legacy names of POWER and Sparc64
CPUs. However, instead of putting such a hack in the common QOM code,
there is a much better place to do this: The sparc_cpu_class_by_name()
function which is used to look up the names of all Sparc CPUs.
Thus let's finally get rid of the "+" in the Sparc CPU names, and provide
backward compatibility for the old names via some simple checks in the
sparc_cpu_class_by_name() function.

We pass a ResetType argument to the Resettable class enter
phase method, but we don't pass it to hold and exit, even though
the callsites have it readily available. This means that if
a device cared about the ResetType it would need to record it
in the enter phase method to use later on. Pass the type to
all three of the phase methods to avoid having to do that.

Since CPU() macro is a simple cast, the following are equivalent:
Object *obj;
CPUState *cs = CPU(obj)
In order to ease static analysis when running
scripts/coccinelle/cpu_env.cocci from the previous commit,
replace:
- CPU_GET_CLASS(cpu);
+ CPU_GET_CLASS(obj);
Most code use the 'cs' variable name for CPUState handle.
Replace few 's' -> 'cs' to unify cpu_reset_hold() style.

In CPUSparcState we define the fprs field as uint64_t. However we
then refer to it in translate.c via a TCGv_i32 which we set up with
tcg_global_mem_new_ptr(). This means that on a big-endian host when
the guest does something to writo te the FPRS register this value
ends up in the wrong half of the uint64_t, and the QEMU C code that
refers to env->fprs sees the wrong value. The effect of this is that
guest code that enables the FPU crashes with spurious FPU Disabled
exceptions. In particular, this is why
tests/avocado/machine_sparc64_sun4u.py:Sun4uMachine.test_sparc64_sun4u
times out on an s390 host.
There are multiple ways we could fix this; since there are actually
only three bits in the FPRS register and the code in translate.c
would be a bit painful to convert to dealing with a TCGv_i64, change
the type of the CPU state struct field to match what translate.c is
expecting.
(None of the other fields referenced by the r32[] array in
sparc_tcg_init() have the wrong type.)

Quoting Peter Maydell [*]:
There are two ways to handle migration for
a CPU object:
(1) like any other device, so it has a dc->vmsd that covers
migration for the whole object. As usual for objects that are a
subclass of a parent that has state, the first entry in the
VMStateDescription field list is VMSTATE_CPU(), which migrates
the cpu_common fields, followed by whatever the CPU's own migration
fields are.
(2) a backwards-compatible mechanism for CPUs that were
originally migrated using manual "write fields to the migration
stream structures". The on-the-wire migration format
for those is based on the 'env' pointer (which isn't a QOM object),
and the cpu_common part of the migration data is elsewhere.
cpu_exec_realizefn() handles both possibilities:
* for type 1, dc->vmsd is set and cc->vmsd is not,
so cpu_exec_realizefn() does nothing, and the standard
"register dc->vmsd for a device" code does everything needed
* for type 2, dc->vmsd is NULL and so we register the
vmstate_cpu_common directly to handle the cpu-common fields,
and the cc->vmsd to handle the per-CPU stuff
You can't change a CPU from one type to the other without breaking
migration compatibility, which is why some guest architectures
are stuck on the cc->vmsd form. New targets should use dc->vmsd.
To avoid new targets to start using type (2), rename cc->vmsd as
cc->legacy_vmsd. The correct field to implement is dc->vmsd (the
DeviceClass one).
See also commit b170fce3dd ("cpu: Register VMStateDescription
through CPUState") for historic background.

we cannot in principle make the TCG Operations field definitions
conditional on CONFIG_TCG in code that is included by both common_ss
and specific_ss modules.
Therefore, what we can do safely to restrict the TCG fields to TCG-only
builds, is to move all tcg cpu operations into a separate header file,
which is only included by TCG, target-specific code.
This leaves just a NULL pointer in the cpu.h for the non-TCG builds.
This also tidies up the code in all targets a bit, having all TCG cpu
operations neatly contained by a dedicated data struct.

... when != err
Not exactly elegant, I'm afraid.
The "when != lbl:" is necessary to avoid transforming
if (fun(args, &err)) {
goto out
}
...
out:
error_propagate(errp, err);
even though other paths to label out still need the error_propagate().
For an actual example, see sclp_realize().
Without the "when strict", Coccinelle transforms vfio_msix_setup(),
incorrectly. I don't know what exactly "when strict" does, only that
it helps here.
The match of return is narrower than what I want, but I can't figure
out how to express "return where the operand doesn't use @err". For
an example where it's too narrow, see vfio_intx_enable().
Silently fails to convert hw/arm/armsse.c, because Coccinelle gets
confused by ARMSSE being used both as typedef and function-like macro
there. Converted manually.
Line breaks tidied up manually. One nested declaration of @local_err
deleted manually. Preexisting unwanted blank line dropped in
hw/riscv/sifive_e.c.

if (err) {

to
if (!visit_foo(..., errp)) {

for visitor functions that now return true / false on success / error.

The CPUClass has a 'reset' method. This is a legacy from when
TYPE_CPU used not to inherit from TYPE_DEVICE. We don't need it any
more, as we can simply use the TYPE_DEVICE reset. The 'cpu_reset()'
function is kept as the API which most places use to reset a CPU; it
is now a wrapper which calls device_cold_reset() and then the
tracepoint function.
This change should not cause CPU objects to be reset more often
than they are at the moment, because:
* nobody is directly calling device_cold_reset() or
qdev_reset_all() on CPU objects
* no CPU object is on a qbus, so they will not be reset either
by somebody calling qbus_reset_all()/bus_cold_reset(), or
by the main "reset sysbus and everything in the qbus tree"
reset that most devices are reset by
Note that this does not change the need for each machine or whatever
to use qemu_register_reset() to arrange to call cpu_reset() -- that
is necessary because CPU objects are not on any qbus, so they don't
get reset when the qbus tree rooted at the sysbus bus is reset, and
this isn't being changed here.
All the changes to the files under target/ were made using the
included Coccinelle script, except:
(1) the deletion of the now-inaccurate and not terribly useful
"CPUClass::reset" comments was done with a perl one-liner afterwards:
perl -n -i -e '/ CPUClass::reset/ or print' target/*/*.c
(2) this bit of the s390 change was done by hand, because the
Coccinelle script is not sophisticated enough to handle the
parent_reset call being inside another function:
