62fcc4e872 aspeed/timer: Clean up local variable shadowing

d2f9a79a8c hw/timer/nrf51_timer: Don't lose time when timer is queried in tight loop
The nrf51_timer has a free-running counter which we implement using
the pattern of using two fields (update_counter_ns, counter) to track
the last point at which we calculated the counter value, and the
counter value at that time. Then we can find the current counter
value by converting the difference in wall-clock time between then
and now to a tick count that we need to add to the counter value.

Unfortunately the nrf51_timer's implementation of this has a bug
which means it loses time every time update_counter() is called.
After updating s->counter it always sets s->update_counter_ns to
'now', even though the actual point when s->counter hit the new value
will be some point in the past (half a tick, say). In the worst case
(guest code in a tight loop reading the counter, icount mode) the
counter is continually queried less than a tick after it was last
read, so s->counter never advances but s->update_counter_ns does, and
the guest never makes forward progress.

The fix for this is to only advance update_counter_ns to the
timestamp of the last tick, not all the way to 'now'. (This is the
pattern used in hw/misc/mps2-fpgaio.c's counter.)

37d2bcbc2a hw/timer/hpet: Fix expiration time overflow
The expiration time provided for timer_mod() can overflow if a
ridiculously large value is set to the comparator register. The
resulting value can represent a past time after rounded, forcing the
timer to fire immediately. If the timer is configured as periodic, it
will rearm the timer again, and form an endless loop.

Check if the expiration value will overflow, and if it will, stop the
timer instead of rearming the timer with the overflowed time.

This bug was found by Alexander Bulekov when fuzzing igb, a new

883f2c591f bulk: Rename TARGET_FMT_plx -> HWADDR_FMT_plx
The 'hwaddr' type is defined in "exec/hwaddr.h" as:

    hwaddr is the type of a physical address
   (its size can be different from 'target_ulong').

All definitions use the 'HWADDR_' prefix, except TARGET_FMT_plx:

 $ fgrep define include/exec/hwaddr.h
 #define HWADDR_H
 #define HWADDR_BITS 64
 #define HWADDR_MAX UINT64_MAX
 #define TARGET_FMT_plx "%016" PRIx64
         ^^^^^^
 #define HWADDR_PRId PRId64
 #define HWADDR_PRIi PRIi64
 #define HWADDR_PRIo PRIo64
 #define HWADDR_PRIu PRIu64
 #define HWADDR_PRIx PRIx64
 #define HWADDR_PRIX PRIX64

Since hwaddr's size can be *different* from target_ulong, it is
very confusing to read one of its format using the 'TARGET_FMT_'
prefix, normally used for the target_long / target_ulong types:

$ fgrep TARGET_FMT_ include/exec/cpu-defs.h
 #define TARGET_FMT_lx "%08x"
 #define TARGET_FMT_ld "%d"
 #define TARGET_FMT_lu "%u"
 #define TARGET_FMT_lx "%016" PRIx64
 #define TARGET_FMT_ld "%" PRId64
 #define TARGET_FMT_lu "%" PRIu64

Apparently this format was missed during commit a8170e5e97
("Rename target_phys_addr_t to hwaddr"), so complete it by
doing a bulk-rename with:

 $ sed -i -e s/TARGET_FMT_plx/HWADDR_FMT_plx/g $(git grep -l TARGET_FMT_plx)

9323e79f10 Fix 'writeable' typos
We have about 30 instances of the typo/variant spelling 'writeable',
and over 500 of the more common 'writable'. Standardize on the
latter.

Change produced with:

  sed -i -e 's/\([Ww][Rr][Ii][Tt]\)[Ee]\([Aa][Bb][Ll][Ee]\)/\1\2/g' $(git grep -il writeable)

and then hand-undoing the instance in linux-headers/linux/kvm.h.

Most of these changes are in comments or documentation; the
exceptions are:
 * a local variable in accel/hvf/hvf-accel-ops.c
 * a local variable in accel/kvm/kvm-all.c
 * the PMCR_WRITABLE_MASK macro in target/arm/internals.h
 * the EPT_VIOLATION_GPA_WRITABLE macro in target/i386/hvf/vmcs.h
   (which is never used anywhere)
 * the AR_TYPE_WRITABLE_MASK macro in target/i386/hvf/vmx.h

9598c1bb39 ptimer: Rename PTIMER_POLICY_DEFAULT to PTIMER_POLICY_LEGACY
The traditional ptimer behaviour includes a collection of weird edge
case behaviours. In 2016 we improved the ptimer implementation to
fix these and generally make the behaviour more flexible, with
ptimers opting in to the new behaviour by passing an appropriate set
of policy flags to ptimer_init(). For backwards-compatibility, we
defined PTIMER_POLICY_DEFAULT (which sets no flags) to give the old
weird behaviour.

This turns out to be a poor choice of name, because people writing
new devices which use ptimers are misled into thinking that the
default is probably a sensible choice of flags, when in fact it is
almost always not what you want. Rename PTIMER_POLICY_DEFAULT to
PTIMER_POLICY_LEGACY and beef up the comment to more clearly say that
new devices should not be using it.

The code-change part of this commit was produced by
  sed -i -e 's/PTIMER_POLICY_DEFAULT/PTIMER_POLICY_LEGACY/g' $(git grep -l PTIMER_POLICY_DEFAULT)
with the exception of a test name string change in
tests/unit/ptimer-test.c which was added manually.

b21e238037 Use g_new() & friends where that makes obvious sense
g_new(T, n) is neater than g_malloc(sizeof(T) * n).  It's also safer,
for two reasons. One, it catches multiplication overflowing size_t.
Two, it returns T * rather than void *, which lets the compiler catch
more type errors.

This commit only touches allocations with size arguments of the form
sizeof(T).

Patch created mechanically with:

    $ spatch --in-place --sp-file scripts/coccinelle/use-g_new-etc.cocci \
