Apart from defconfig (which is a no-op),
allyesconfig/allnoconfig/randcondfig can be implemented simply by ignoring
the RHS of assignments and "default" statements. The RHS is replaced
respectively by "true", "false" or a random value.
However, allyesconfig and randconfig do not quite work, because all the
files for hw/ARCH/Kconfig are sourced and therefore you could end up
enabling some ARM boards in x86 or things like that. This is left for
future work, but I am leaving it in to help debugging minikconf itself.
allnoconfig mode is tied to a new configure option, --without-default-devices.

The make_device_config.sh script is replaced by minikconf, which
is modified to support the same command line as its predecessor.
The roots of the parsing are default-configs/*.mak, Kconfig.host and
hw/Kconfig. One difference with make_device_config.sh is that all symbols
have to be defined in a Kconfig file, including those coming from the
configure script. This is the reason for the Kconfig.host file introduced
in the previous patch. Whenever a file in default-configs/*.mak used
$(...) to refer to a config-host.mak symbol, this is replaced by a
Kconfig dependency; this part must be done already in this patch
for bisectability.

our rST docs into HTML files.
Building the documentation now requires that sphinx-build is

The current qemu_acl module provides a simple access control list
facility inside QEMU, which is used via a set of monitor commands
acl_show, acl_policy, acl_add, acl_remove & acl_reset.
Note there is no ability to create ACLs - the network services (eg VNC
server) were expected to create ACLs that they want to check.
There is also no way to define ACLs on the command line, nor potentially
integrate with external authorization systems like polkit, pam, ldap
lookup, etc.
The QAuthZ object defines a minimal abstract QOM class that can be
subclassed for creating different authorization providers.

The new pvh.bin option rom can be used with SeaBIOS to boot
uncompressed kernel using the x86/HVM direct boot ABI.
pvh.S contains the entry point of the option rom. It runs
in real mode, loads the e820 table querying the BIOS, and
then it switches to 32bit protected mode and jumps to the
pvh_load_kernel() written in pvh_main.c.
pvh_load_kernel() loads the cmdline and kernel entry_point
using fw_cfg, then it looks for RSDP, fills the
hvm_start_info required by x86/HVM ABI, and finally jumps
to the kernel entry_point.

This commit introduces a way to do simple printf style logging of probe
points using systemtap. In particular it creates another set of tapsets,
one per emulator:
/usr/share/systemtap/tapset/qemu-*-log.stp
These pre-define probe functions which simply call printf() on their
arguments. The printf() format string is taken from the normal
trace-events files, with a little munging to the format specifiers
to cope with systemtap's more restrictive syntax.
With this you can now do
$ stap -e 'probe qemu.system.x86_64.log.qio*{}'

We go one step further though and introduce a 'qemu-trace-stap' tool to
make this even easier
$ qemu-trace-stap run qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'

22806@1547735341399976816 qio_task_thread_run Task thread run task=0x56135cd66eb0
This tool is clever in that it will automatically change the
SYSTEMTAP_TAPSET env variable to point to the directory containing the
right set of probes for the QEMU binary path you give it. This is useful
if you have QEMU installed in /usr but are trying to test and trace a
binary in /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git. In that case you'd do
$ qemu-trace-stap run /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
And it'll make sure /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/share/systemtap/tapset
is used for the trace session
The 'qemu-trace-stap' script takes a verbose arg so you can understand
what it is running
$ qemu-trace-stap run /home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
Using tapset dir '/home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/share/systemtap/tapset' for binary '/home/berrange/usr/qemu-git/bin/qemu-system-x86_64'
Compiling script 'probe qemu.system.x86_64.log.qio* {}'
Running script, <Ctrl>-c to quit
...trace output...
It can enable multiple probes at once
$ qemu-trace-stap run qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*' 'qcrypto*' 'buffer*'
By default it monitors all existing running processes and all future
launched proceses. This can be restricted to a specific PID using the
--pid arg
$ qemu-trace-stap run --pid 2532 qemu-system-x86_64 'qio*'
Finally if you can't remember what probes are valid it can tell you
$ qemu-trace-stap list qemu-system-x86_64

Or list just those matching a prefix pattern

The next commit will add an EXAMPLES section to qemu-nbd.8;
for that to work, we need to recognize EXAMPLES in texi2pod.
We also need to add a dependency from all man pages against

The icon associated with a GtkWindow is just a hint to window managers
and not all of them will honour it. Some will instead want to show the
icon listed by the .desktop file. The desktop file is located based on
the application ID, which is set using g_set_prgname. QEMU has not
historically provided a desktop file or set its app ID, so it got a
broken icon in GNOME shell, which is now fixed.

QEMU currently installs logos to $prefix/share/qemu/ which means no GUI
toolkit or applications can find them by default.
The accepted standards for desktop applications declare that application
logos / icons should be installed under $prefix/share/icons, so use this
directory location.
Pre-rendered icons are provided at the standard sizes expected for GUI
applications, along with the scalable SVG, to ensure maximum portability.
The PNGs are rendered from the SVG using inkscape, however, this is not
wired up into the default make rules to avoid requiring inkscape as a
mandatory tool in build systems / developer workstations.

Fix Commit a5d2f6f877 (contrib/rdmacm-mux: Add implementation

to libumad library in case pvrdma configuration option is enabled.
Clang forbids it:

This will allow to have cflags for the whole slirp.mo -objs.
It makes it possible to build tests that links only with
slirp-obj-y (and not the whole common-obj).
It is also a step towards building slirp as a shared library, although
this requires a bit more thoughts to build with
net/slirp.o (CONFIG_SLIRP would need to be 'm') and other build issues.

RDMA MAD kernel module (ibcm) disallow more than one MAD-agent for a
given MAD class.
This does not go hand-by-hand with qemu pvrdma device's requirements
where each VM is MAD agent.
Fix it by adding implementation of RDMA MAD multiplexer service which on
one hand register as a sole MAD agent with the kernel module and on the
other hand gives service to more than one VM.
Design Overview:
Reviewed-by: Shamir Rabinovitch <shamir.rabinovitch@oracle.com>
----------------
A server process is registered to UMAD framework (for this to work the
rdma_cm kernel module needs to be unloaded) and creates a unix socket to
listen to incoming request from clients.
A client process (such as QEMU) connects to this unix socket and
registers with its own GID.
TX:
----
When client needs to send rdma_cm MAD message it construct it the same
way as without this multiplexer, i.e. creates a umad packet but this
time it writes its content to the socket instead of calling umad_send().
The server, upon receiving such a message fetch local_comm_id from it so
a context for this session can be maintain and relay the message to UMAD
layer by calling umad_send().
RX:
----
The server creates a worker thread to process incoming rdma_cm MAD
messages. When an incoming message arrived (umad_recv()) the server,
depending on the message type (attr_id) looks for target client by
either searching in gid->fd table or in local_comm_id->fd table. With
the extracted fd the server relays to incoming message to the client.

Adding a new qapi module had some rather tedious repetition to
wire it into Makefile, Makefile.objs, and .gitignore (for example,
see commit bf42508f and its followup b61acdec). For make, add some
indirection by taking advantage of GNU Make string processing to
expand a list of module names into all the required artifacts, so
that future additions of a new module need only touch the list of
module names. And for gitignore, use globs to cover all generated
file names.
The list has to live in Makefile.objs, due to the way that
our unnest-vars macro slirps in that file without remembering
any definition of $(QAPI_MODULES) from Makefile.

elf2dmp is a converter from ELF dump (produced by 'dump-guest-memory') to
Windows MEMORY.DMP format (also know as 'Complete Memory Dump') which can be
opened in WinDbg.
This tool can help if VMCoreInfo device/driver is absent in Windows VM and
'dump-guest-memory -w' is not available but dump can be created in ELF format.
The tool works as follows:
1. Determine the system paging root looking at GS_BASE or KERNEL_GS_BASE
to locate the PRCB structure and finds the kernel CR3 nearby if QEMU CPU
state CR3 is not suitable.
2. Find an address within the kernel image by dereferencing the first
IDT entry and scans virtual memory upwards until the start of the
kernel.
3. Download a PDB matching the kernel from the Microsoft symbol store,
and figure out the layout of certain relevant structures necessary for
the dump.
4. Populate the corresponding structures in the memory image and create
the appropriate dump header.

EDID is a metadata format to describe monitors. On physical hardware
the monitor has an eeprom with that data block which can be read over
i2c bus.
On a linux system you can usually find the EDID data block in
/sys/class/drm/$card/$connector/edid. xorg ships a edid-decode utility
which you can use to turn the blob into readable form.
I think it would be a good idea to use EDID for virtual displays too.
Needs changes in both qemu and guest kms drivers. This patch is the
first step, it adds an generator for EDID blobs to qemu. Comes with a
qemu-edid test tool included.
With EDID we can pass more information to the guest. Names and serial
numbers, so the guests display configuration has no boring "Unknown
Monitor". List of video modes. Display resolution, pretty important
in case we want add HiDPI support some day.

This commit removes the PYTHON_UTF8 workaround. The problem with setting
LC_ALL= LANG=C LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
is that the en_US.UTF-8 locale might not be available. In this case
setting above locales results in build errors even though another UTF-8
locale was originally set [1]. The only stable way of fixing the
encoding problem is by specifying the encoding in Python, like the
previous commit does.

Since commit 67a1de0d19 there is no space anymore between the
version number and the parentheses when running configure with
--with-pkgversion=foo :
$ qemu-system-s390x --version
QEMU emulator version 2.11.50(foo)
But the space is included when building without that option
when building from a git checkout:
$ qemu-system-s390x --version
QEMU emulator version 2.11.50 (v2.11.0-1494-gbec9c64-dirty)
The same confusion exists with the "query-version" QMP command.
Let's fix this by introducing a proper QEMU_FULL_VERSION definition
that includes the space and parentheses, while the QEMU_PKGVERSION
should just cleanly contain the package version string itself.
Note that this also changes the behavior of the "query-version" QMP
command (the space and parentheses are not included there anymore),
but that's supposed to be OK since the strings there are not meant
to be parsed by other tools.

Move qapi-schema.json to qapi/, so it's next to its modules, and all
files get generated to qapi/, not just the ones generated for modules.
Consistently name the generated files qapi-MODULE.EXT:
qmp-commands.[ch] become qapi-commands.[ch], qapi-event.[ch] become
qapi-events.[ch], and qmp-introspect.[ch] become qapi-introspect.[ch].
This gets rid of the temporary hacks in scripts/qapi/commands.py,

The previous commit improved compile time by including less of the
generated QAPI headers. This is impossible for stuff defined directly
in qapi-schema.json, because that ends up in headers that that pull in
everything.
Move everything but include directives from qapi-schema.json to new
sub-module qapi/misc.json, then include just the "misc" shard where
possible.
It's possible everywhere, except:
* monitor.c needs qmp-command.h to get qmp_init_marshal()
* monitor.c, ui/vnc.c and the generated qapi-event-FOO.c need
qapi-event.h to get enum QAPIEvent
Perhaps we'll get rid of those some other day.

Our qapi-schema.json is composed of modules connected by include
directives, but the generated code is monolithic all the same: one
qapi-types.h with all the types, one qapi-visit.h with all the
visitors, and so forth. These monolithic headers get included all
over the place. In my "build everything" tree, adding a QAPI type
recompiles about 4800 out of 5100 objects.
We wouldn't write such monolithic headers by hand. It stands to
reason that we shouldn't generate them, either.
Split up generated qapi-types.h to mirror the schema's modular
structure: one header per module. Name the main module's header
qapi-types.h, and sub-module D/B.json's header D/qapi-types-B.h.
Mirror the schema's includes in the headers, so that qapi-types.h gets
you everything exactly as before. If you need less, you can include
one or more of the sub-module headers. To be exploited shortly.
Split up qapi-types.c, qapi-visit.h, qapi-visit.c, qmp-commands.h,
qmp-commands.c, qapi-event.h, qapi-event.c the same way.
qmp-introspect.h, qmp-introspect.c and qapi.texi remain monolithic.
The split of qmp-commands.c duplicates static helper function
qmp_marshal_output_str() in qapi-commands-char.c and
qapi-commands-misc.c. This happens when commands returning the same
type occur in multiple modules. Not worth avoiding.
Since I'm going to rename qapi-event.[ch] to qapi-events.[ch], and
qmp-commands.[ch] to qapi-commands.[ch], name the shards that way
already, to reduce churn. This requires temporary hacks in
commands.py and events.py. Similarly, c_name() must temporarily
be taught to munge '/' in common.py. They'll go away with the rename.

Linking code from multiple separate QAPI schemata into the same
program is possible, but involves some weirdness around built-in
types:
* We generate code for built-in types into .c only with option
--builtins. The user is responsible for generating code for exactly
one QAPI schema per program with --builtins.
* We generate code for built-in types into .h regardless of
--builtins, but guarded by #ifndef QAPI_VISIT_BUILTIN. Because all
copies of this code are exactly the same, including any combination
of these headers works.
Replace this contraption by something more conventional: generate code
for built-in types into their very own files: qapi-builtin-types.c,
qapi-builtin-visit.c, qapi-builtin-types.h, qapi-builtin-visit.h, but
only with --builtins. Obey --output-dir, but ignore --prefix for
them.
Make qapi-types.h include qapi-builtin-types.h. With multiple
schemata you now have multiple qapi-types.[ch], but only one
qapi-builtin-types.[ch]. Same for qapi-visit.[ch] and
qapi-builtin-visit.[ch].
Bonus: if all you need is built-in stuff, you can include a much
smaller header. To be exploited shortly.

This reverts commit 42a77f1ce4.
The primary intention of this change was to silence messages
like
make[1]: '/home/berrange/src/virt/qemu/capstone/libcapstone.a' is up to date.
which we get when calling make recursively with explicit
targets.
The problem is that this change affected every make target,
not merely the targets that triggered these "is up to date"
messages. As a result any targets that were not invoking
commands via "$(call quiet-command ...)" suddenly become
silent. This is particularly bad for "make install" which
now appears todo nothing.
Rather than go through every make rule and try to identify
places where we now need to explicitly print a message to
show work taking place, just revert the change.
To address the original problem of silencing "is up to date"
messages, we simply add --quiet to the SUBDIR_MAKEVARS
variable, so it only affects us on recursive make calls.

Many distros support a new C.UTF-8 locale that is like the C locale,
but with UTF-8 instead of 7-bit ASCII. That is not entirely portable
though. This patch thus sets the LANG to "C", but overrides LC_CTYPE
to be en_US.UTF-8 locale. This gets us pretty close to C.UTF-8, but
in a way that should be portable to everywhere QEMU builds.
This patch only forces UTF-8 for QAPI scripts, since that is the one
showing the immediate error under Python3 with C locale, but potentially
we ought to force this for all python scripts used in the build process.

'make test' triggers the ancient, unmaintained tcg unit tests in
tests/tcg/Makefile which have long since ceased compiling.
Even if someone fixes the TCG tests, it makes little sense to put
them in a 'make test' target, rather they should be 'make check-tcg',
possibly wired up as a dependency of 'make check'.
In the meantime, this patch disarms the 'make test' trap by simply
deleting it so users get an immediate error. This should be enough
for them to remember to type 'make check' instead (or 'make help'
to learn). It also deletes 'make speed' which is another route

The Makefile attempts to optimize the handling of submodules by using MAKELEVEL
to only check the submodule status when running from the top level make
invokation. This causes problems for people who are using a makefile of their
own to in turn invoke QEMU's makefile, as MAKELEVEL is already set to 1 (or
more) when QEMU's makefile runs.
This optimization should not really be needed, since the git-submodule.sh
script is already used to detect if a submodule update is required. This by
removing the MAKELEVEL check, we at most add an extra 'git-submodule.sh status'
call to each make level, the overhead of which is lost in noise of building
QEMU.

Some people building QEMU use VPATH builds where the source directory is on a
read-only volume. In such a case 'scripts/git-submodules.sh update' will always
fail and users are required to run it manually themselves on their original
writable source directory.
While this is already supported, it is nice to give users a command line flag
to configure to permanently disable automatic submodule updates, as it means
they won't get hard to diagnose failures from git-submodules.sh at an arbitrary
later date.
This patch thus introduces a flag '--disable-git-update' which will prevent
'make' from ever running 'scripts/git-submodules.sh update'. It will still run
the 'status' command to determine if a submodule update is needed, but when it
does this it'll simply stop and print a message instructing the developer what

build: automatically handle GIT submodule checkout for dtc
On my system, I see the following with a fresh clone:
% ./configure --disable-gtk --target-list=aarch64-softmmu
% make -j8
GEN aarch64-softmmu/config-devices.mak.tmp
GEN config-host.h
mkdir -p dtc/libfdt

mkdir -p dtc/tests
GEN qemu-options.def

GEN migration/trace.h
make: *** [git-submodule-update] Error 1
make: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
Upon closer inspection, the root cause of the error is:
% git submodule update --init ui/keycodemapdb dtc
fatal: destination path 'dtc' already exists and is not an empty directory.
Clone of 'git://git.qemu-project.org/dtc.git' into submodule path 'dtc' failed
This patch fixes this race condition by forcing the 'dtc/%' rule which caused
'dtc' to be non-empty to wait on '.git-submodule-status'.

Replace the number_to_qcode, qcode_to_number and linux_to_qcode

Missing entries in linux_to_qcode now fixed:
KEY_LINEFEED -> Q_KEY_CODE_LF
KEY_KPEQUAL -> Q_KEY_CODE_KP_EQUALS
KEY_COMPOSE -> Q_KEY_CODE_COMPOSE
KEY_AGAIN -> Q_KEY_CODE_AGAIN
KEY_PROPS -> Q_KEY_CODE_PROPS

KEY_PASTE -> Q_KEY_CODE_PASTE
KEY_CUT -> Q_KEY_CODE_CUT
KEY_HELP -> Q_KEY_CODE_HELP
KEY_MEDIA -> Q_KEY_CODE_MEDIASELECT
In addition, some fixes:
- KEY_PLAYPAUSE now maps to Q_KEY_CODE_AUDIOPLAY, instead of
KEY_PLAYCD. KEY_PLAYPAUSE is defined across almost all scancodes
sets, while KEY_PLAYCD only appears in AT set1, so the former is
a more useful mapping.
Missing entries in qcode_to_number now fixed:
Q_KEY_CODE_AGAIN -> 0x85
Q_KEY_CODE_PROPS -> 0x86
Q_KEY_CODE_UNDO -> 0x87
Q_KEY_CODE_FRONT -> 0x8c
Q_KEY_CODE_COPY -> 0xf8

Q_KEY_CODE_HELP -> 0xf5
Q_KEY_CODE_COMPOSE -> 0xdd
Q_KEY_CODE_KP_EQUALS -> 0x59
Q_KEY_CODE_MEDIASELECT -> 0xed
In addition, some fixes:
- Q_KEY_CODE_MENU was incorrectly mapped to the compose
scancode (0xdd) and is now mapped to 0x9e
- Q_KEY_CODE_FIND was mapped to 0xe065 (Search) instead
of to 0xe041 (Find)
- Q_KEY_CODE_HIRAGANA was mapped to 0x70 (Katakanahiragana)
instead of of 0x77 (Hirigana)
- Q_KEY_CODE_PRINT was mapped to 0xb7 which is not a defined
scan code in AT set 1, it is now mapped to 0x54 (sysrq)

The https://gitlab.com/keycodemap/keycodemapdb/ repo contains a
data file mapping between all the different scancode/keycode/keysym
sets that are known, and a tool to auto-generate lookup tables for
different combinations.
It is used by GTK-VNC, SPICE-GTK and libvirt for mapping keys.
Using it in QEMU will let us replace many hand written lookup
tables with auto-generated tables from a master data source,
reducing bugs. Adding new QKeyCodes will now only require the
master table to be updated, all ~20 other tables will be
automatically updated to follow.

Currently if DTC is required by configure and not available in the host
OS install, we exit with an error message telling the user to checkout a
git submodule or install the library.
This introduces automatic handling of the git submodule checkout process
and enables it for dtc. This only runs if building from GIT, so users of
release tarballs still need the system library install. The current state
of the git checkout is stashed in .git-submodule-status, and a helper
program is used to determine if this state matches the desired submodule
state. A dependency against 'Makefile' ensures that the submodule state
is refreshed at the start of the build process

Proper support of persistent reservation for multipath devices requires
communication with the multipath daemon, so that the reservation is
registered and applied when a path comes up. The device mapper
utilities provide a library to do so; this patch makes qemu-pr-helper.c
detect multipath devices and, when one is found, delegate the operation
to libmpathpersist.
Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
Introduce a privileged helper to run persistent reservation commands.
This lets virtual machines send persistent reservations without using
CAP_SYS_RAWIO or out-of-tree patches. The helper uses Unix permissions
and SCM_RIGHTS to restrict access to processes that can access its socket
and prove that they have an open file descriptor for a raw SCSI device.
The next patch will also correct the usage of persistent reservations
with multipath devices.
It would also be possible to support for Linux's IOC_PR_* ioctls in
the future, to support NVMe devices. For now, however, only SCSI is
supported.

It's already possible to do a network boot of an s390x guest with an
external netboot image based on a Linux installation, but it would
be much more convenient if the s390-ccw firmware supported network
booting right out of the box, without the need to assemble such an
external image first.
This is an s390-netboot.img that can be used for network booting.
You can download a combined kernel + initrd image via TFTP
by starting QEMU for example with:
qemu-system-s390x ... -device virtio-net,netdev=n1,bootindex=1 \
-netdev user,id=n1,tftp=/path/to/tftp,bootfile=kernel.img
Note that this version does not support downloading via config
files (i.e. pxelinux config files or .INS config files) yet. This
will be added later.

This commit introduces a vhost-user-scsi backend sample application. It
must be linked with libiscsi and libvhost-user.
To use it, compile with:
$ make vhost-user-scsi
And run as follows:
$ ./vhost-user-scsi -u vus.sock -i iscsi://uri_to_target/
$ qemu-system-x86_64 --enable-kvm -m 512 \
-object memory-backend-file,id=mem,size=512m,share=on,mem-path=guestmem \
-numa node,memdev=mem \
-chardev socket,id=vhost-user-scsi,path=vus.sock \
-device vhost-user-scsi-pci,chardev=vhost-user-scsi \
The application is currently limited at one LUN only and it processes
requests synchronously (therefore only achieving QD1). The purpose of
the code is to show how a backend can be implemented and to test the
vhost-user-scsi Qemu implementation.
If a different instance of this vhost-user-scsi application is executed
at a remote host, a VM can be live migrated to such a host.

The build rules for trace files have a dependancy on $(tracetool-y).
This variable populated in the trace/Makefile.objs file and thus its
definition gets pulled into the top level makefile. This happens too
late in the process though, so by the time $(tracetool-y) is defined,
make has already evaluated $(tracetool-y) in the dependancies and
found it to be empty. The result is that when the tracetool source
is changed, the generated files are not rebuilt. The solution is to
define the variable in the top level makefile too

The only functional difference between the GENERATED_HEADERS
and GENERATED_SOURCES variables is that 'Makefile' has a
dependancy on GENERATED_HEADERS, causing generated header files
to be created immediatey at the start of the build process.
There is no reason why this early creation should be restricted
to the .h files, and not include .c files too. Merge both of

Add a library to help implementing vhost-user backend (or slave).
Dealing with vhost-user as an application developer isn't so easy: you
have all the trouble with any protocol: validation, unix ancillary data,
shared memory, eventfd, logging, and on top of that you need to deal
with virtio queues, if possible efficiently.
qemu test has a nice vhost-user testing application vhost-user-bridge,
which implements most of vhost-user, and virtio.c which implements
virtqueues manipulation. Based on these two, I tried to make a simple
library, reusable for tests or development of new vhost-user scenarios.

Currently the generated-events.[ch] files contain the
event dstates, constants and TraceEvent structs, while the
generated-tracers.[ch] files contain the actual trace
probe logic. With the removal of usage of the event enums
from the API there is no longer any compelling reason for
the separation between these files. The generated-events.h
content is only ever needed from the generated-tracers.[ch]
files.
The enums/constants/structs from generated-events.[ch] are
thus moved into the generated-tracers.[ch], so that there
is one less file to be generated.

The quiet-command make rule currently takes two arguments:
the command and arguments to run, and a string to print if
the V flag is not set (ie we are not being verbose).
By convention, the string printed is of the form
" NAME some args". Unfortunately to get nicely lined up
output all the strings have to agree about what column the
arguments should start in, which means that if we add a
new quiet-command usage which wants a slightly longer CMD
name then we either put up with misalignment or change
every quiet-command string.
Split the quiet-mode string into two, the "NAME" and
the "same args" part, and use printf(1) to format the
string automatically. This means we only need to change
one place if we want to support a longer maximum name.
In particular, we can now print 7-character names lined
up properly (they are needed for the OSX "SETTOOL" invocation).
Change all the uses of quiet-command to the new syntax.
(Any which are missed or inadvertently reintroduced
via later merges will result in slightly misformatted
quiet output rather than disaster.)
A few places in the pc-bios/ makefiles are updated to use
"BUILD", "SIGN" and "STRIP" rather than "Building",
"Signing" and "Stripping" for consistency and to keep them
below 7 characters. Module .mo links now print "LD" rather
than the nonstandard "LD -r".

Extend the current module interface to allow for block drivers to be
loaded dynamically on request. The only block drivers that can be
converted into modules are the drivers that don't perform any init
operation except for registering themselves.
In addition, only the protocol drivers are being modularized, as they
are the only ones which see significant performance benefits. The format
drivers do not generally link to external libraries, so modularizing
them is of no benefit from a performance perspective.
All the necessary module information is located in a new structure found
in module_block.h
This spoils the purpose of 5505e8b76f (block/dmg: make it modular).
Before this patch, if module build is enabled, block-dmg.so is linked to
libbz2, whereas the main binary is not. In downstream, theoretically, it
means only the qemu-block-extra package depends on libbz2, while the
main QEMU package needn't to. With this patch, we (temporarily) change
the case so that the main QEMU depends on libbz2 again.

This adds a group of make targets to run docker tests, all are available
in source tree without running ./configure.
The usage is shown with "make docker".
Besides the fixed ones, dynamic targets for building each image and
running each test in each image are generated automatically by make,
scanning $(SRC_PATH)/tests/docker/ files with specific patterns.
Alternative to manually list particular targets (docker-TEST@IMAGE)
set, you can control which tests/images to run by filtering variables,
TESTS= and IMAGES=, which are expressed in Makefile pattern syntax,
"foo% %bar ...". For example:
$ make docker-test IMAGES="ubuntu fedora"
Unfortunately, it's impossible to propagate "-j $JOBS" into make in
containers, however since each combination is made a first class target
in the top Makefile, "make -j$N docker-test" still parallels the tests
coarsely.
Still, $J is made a magic variable to let all make invocations in
containers to use -j$J.
Instead of providing a live version of the source tree to the docker
container we snapshot it with git-archive. This ensures the tree is in a
pristine state for whatever operations the container is going to run on
them.
Uncommitted changes known to files known by the git index will be
included in the snapshot if there are any.

Our dependency mechanism works like this:
* on first build there is neither a .o nor a .d
* we create the .d as a side effect of creating the .o
* for rebuilds we know when we need to update the .o,
which also updates the .d
This system requires that you're never in a situation where there is
a .o file but no .d (because then we will never realise we need to
build the .d, and we will not have the dependency information about
when to rebuild the .o).
This is working fine for our object files, but we also try to use it
for $TARGET/config-devices.mak (where the dependency file is
in $TARGET-config-devices.mak.d). Unfortunately "make clean" doesn't
remove config-devices.mak, which means that it puts us in the
forbidden situation of "object file exists but not its .d file".
This in turn means that we will fail to notice when we need to rebuild:
mkdir build/depbug
(cd build/depbug && '../../configure')
make -C build/depbug -j8
make -C build/depbug clean
echo "CONFIG_CANARY = y" >> default-configs/arm-softmmu.mak
make -C build/depbug
grep CANARY build/depbug/aarch64-softmmu/config-devices.mak
The CANARY token should show up in config-devices.mak but does not.
Fix this bug by making "make clean" delete the config-devices.mak files.
config-all-devices.mak doesn't have the same problem since it has
no .d file, but delete it too, since it is created by "make" and
logically should be removed by "make clean".
(Note that it is important not to remove config-devices.mak until
after we have recursively run 'make clean' in the subdirectories.)

The windows socket functions look identical to the normal POSIX
sockets functions, but instead of setting errno, the caller needs
to call WSAGetLastError(). QEMU has tried to deal with this
incompatibility by defining a socket_error() method that callers
must use that abstracts the difference between WSAGetLastError()
and errno.
This approach is somewhat error prone though - many callers of
the sockets functions are just using errno directly because it
is easy to forget the need use a QEMU specific wrapper. It is
not always immediately obvious that a particular function will
in fact call into Windows sockets functions, so the dev may not
even realize they need to use socket_error().
This introduces an alternative approach to portability inspired
by the way GNULIB fixes portability problems. We use a macro to
redefine the original socket function names to refer to a QEMU
wrapper function. The wrapper function calls the original Win32
sockets method and then sets errno from the WSAGetLastError()
value.
Thus all code can simply call the normal POSIX sockets APIs are
have standard errno reporting on error, even on Windows. This
makes the socket_error() method obsolete.
We also bring closesocket & ioctlsocket into this approach. Even
though they are non-standard Win32 names, we can't wrap the normal
close/ioctl methods since there's no reliable way to distinguish
between a file descriptor and HANDLE in Win32.

two pointers, one to the master QIOChannelSocket providing the raw
data channel, and one to a QIOChannel which is the current channel
used for I/O. Initially the two point to the same object, but when
TLS support is added, they will point to different objects.
The qemu-img & qemu-io tools now need to use MODULE_INIT_QOM to
ensure the QIOChannel object classes are registered. The qemu-nbd
tool already did this.

Start the new generic I/O channel framework by defining a

similar to GLib's GIOChannel, but with the addition of
support for using iovecs, qemu error reporting, file

the QOM framework for easier sub-classing.
The intention is that anywhere in QEMU that almost

ab59e3e introduced a fix for `make install` on w32 that involved
filtering out qemu-ga from $TOOLS install recipe so that we could
append $(EXESUF) to it before attempting to install the binary
via install-prog function.
install-prog takes a list of binaries to install to a particular
directory. If the list is empty it breaks. We guard against this
by ensuring $TOOLS is not empty prior to calling.
However, ab59e3e introduces extra filtering after this check which
can still result on us attempting to call install-prog with an
empty list of binaries. In particular, this occurs if we
build with the --disable-tools configure option, which results
in qemu-ga being the only member of $TOOLS.
Fix this by doing a simple s/qemu-ga/qemu-ga$(EXESUF)/ pass through
$TOOLS instead of filtering out qemu-ga to handle it seperately.

fafcaf1 added a 'qemu-ga' install target on w32, which can be used
in place of the existing qemu-ga.exe target to also handle dealing
with other components such as DLLs for VSS/fsfreeze and generating
an MSI package if appropriate configure options are present.
As part of that, qemu-ga$(EXESUF) was removed from $TOOLS in favor
of this new qemu-ga target.
The install rule however relies on a direct mapping of the $TOOLS
entry to the actual resulting binary. In the case of w32, qemu-ga
is not identical to qemu-ga$(EXESUF), and the install recipe fails
to find the 'qemu-ga' binary.
Fix this by essentially remapping 'qemu-ga' back to 'qemu-ga.exe'
in the install recipe.
This raises the question of whether or not qemu-ga should continue
to live in TOOLS as opposed to its own special target, but as a
late fix for a regression in 2.5 this commit should be safer, since
we rely on qemu-ga's presence in $TOOLS in several places throughout
Makefile.

Currently POSIX builds rely on 'qemu-ga' target to do qga-only
distributable build. On w32, as with most standalone binary targets,
we rely on 'qemu-ga.exe' target.
Unlike with POSIX, qemu-ga for w32 has a number of related targets
such as VSS DLL and MSI package. We can do the full distributable
qga-only build on w32 with:
make qemu-ga.exe
or:
make msi
To make that work, we tie VSS dependencies onto qemu-ga.exe.
However, in reality the DLL isn't part of the binary, so we use a
filter to pull them out of the LINK recipe, which attempts to link
against prereqs for binary targets. Additionally, it could be argued
that VSS is a separate distributable, and shouldn't be implied by
qemu-ga.exe binary target.
To avoid this, we can tie the VSS dependencies only to the 'msi'
target, but that would make it impossible to do a qga-only build of
the w32 distributable without building the 'msi' package, which was
supported in the past.
An alternative approach is to add a new target to build the whole
distributable. w32 allows us to use the same build target we use
on POSIX, 'qemu-ga', since the current binary-only target on w32
is 'qemu-ga.exe'.
To further simplify the build, we also make 'qemu-ga' build the MSI
package if the appropriate ./configure options are set, making the
full qga-only build the same on both POSIX and w32: `make qemu-ga`

qapi/introspect.json defines the introspection schema. It's designed
for QMP introspection, but should do for similar uses, such as QGA.
The introspection schema does not reflect all the rules and
restrictions that apply to QAPI schemata. A valid QAPI schema has an
introspection value conforming to the introspection schema, but the
converse is not true.
Introspection lowers away a number of schema details, and makes
implicit things explicit:
* The built-in types are declared with their JSON type.
All integer types are mapped to 'int', because how many bits we use
internally is an implementation detail. It could be pressed into
external interface service as very approximate range information,
but that's a bad idea. If we need range information, we better do
it properly.
* Implicit type definitions are made explicit, and given
auto-generated names:
- Array types, named by appending "List" to the name of their
element type, like in generated C.
- The enumeration types implicitly defined by simple union types,
named by appending "Kind" to the name of their simple union type,
like in generated C.
- Types that don't occur in generated C. Their names start with ':'
so they don't clash with the user's names.
* All type references are by name.
* The struct and union types are generalized into an object type.
* Base types are flattened.
* Commands take a single argument and return a single result.
Dictionary argument or list result is an implicit type definition.
The empty object type is used when a command takes no arguments or
produces no results.
The argument is always of object type, but the introspection schema
doesn't reflect that.
The 'gen': false directive is omitted as implementation detail.
The 'success-response' directive is omitted as well for now, even
though it's not an implementation detail, because it's not used by
QMP.
* Events carry a single data value.
Implicit type definition and empty object type use, just like for
commands.
The value is of object type, but the introspection schema doesn't
reflect that.
* Types not used by commands or events are omitted.
Indirect use counts as use.
* Optional members have a default, which can only be null right now
Instead of a mandatory "optional" flag, we have an optional default.
No default means mandatory, default null means optional without
default value. Non-null is available for optional with default
(possible future extension).
* Clients should *not* look up types by name, because type names are
not ABI. Look up the command or event you're interested in, then
follow the references.
TODO Should we hide the type names to eliminate the temptation?
New generator scripts/qapi-introspect.py computes an introspection
value for its input, and generates a C variable holding it.
It can generate awfully long lines. Marked TODO.
A new test-qmp-input-visitor test case feeds its result for both
tests/qapi-schema/qapi-schema-test.json and qapi-schema.json to a
QmpInputVisitor to verify it actually conforms to the schema.
New QMP command query-qmp-schema takes its return value from that
variable. Its reply is some 85KiBytes for me right now.
If this turns out to be too much, we have a couple of options:
* We can use shorter names in the JSON. Not the QMP style.
* Optionally return the sub-schema for commands and events given as
arguments.
Right now qmp_query_schema() sends the string literal computed by
qmp-introspect.py. To compute sub-schema at run time, we'd have to
duplicate parts of qapi-introspect.py in C. Unattractive.
* Let clients cache the output of query-qmp-schema.
It changes only on QEMU upgrades, i.e. rarely. Provide a command
query-qmp-schema-hash. Clients can have a cache indexed by hash,
and re-query the schema only when they don't have it cached. Even
simpler: put the hash in the QMP greeting.

The qom objects are currently added to common-obj-y
which is only linked into the system emulators. The
later crypto patches will depend on QOM infrastructure
and will also be used from tools binaries. Thus the QOM
objects are moved into a new qom-obj-y variable which
can be referenced when linking tools, system emulators
and tests.
Signed-off-by: Daniel P. Berrange <berrange@redhat.com>
Future patches will be adding more crypto related APIs which
rely on QOM infrastructure. This creates a problem, because
QOM relies on library constructors to register objects. When
you have a file in a static .a library though which is only
referenced by a constructor the linker is dumb and will drop
that file when linking to the final executable :-( The only
workaround for this is to link the .a library to the executable
using the -Wl,--whole-archive flag, but this creates its own
set of problems because QEMU is relying on lazy linking for
libqemuutil.a. Using --whole-archive majorly increases the
size of final executables as they now contain a bunch of
object code they don't actually use.
The least bad option is to thus not include the crypto objects
in libqemuutil.la, and instead define a crypto-obj-y variable
that is referenced directly by all the executables that need
this code (tools + softmmu, but not qemu-ga). We avoid pulling
entire of crypto-obj-y into the userspace emulators as that
would force them to link to gnutls too, which is not required.

Currently VSS dll/tlb files for use in w32 builds are only built as a
result of having been added to the general 'tools' target alongside
qemu-ga. This is fine for default make target, but if we build
qemu-ga directly via `make qemu-ga.exe`, the VSS files are not
created.
Fix this by moving the VSS dependencies to qemu-ga.exe directly.
With this move we can move the VSS files back out of 'tools',
and drop the extra handling from MSI target in Makefile.
Now we can build qemu-ga MSI package with:
./configure ...
make qemu-ga.exe
make msi
or simply:
./configure ...
make msi
and no longer need to do a full build beforehand.

This patch enables parallel building of QEMU in MSYS+MinGW environment.
Currently an attempt to build QEMU in parallel fails on generation of
version.lo (and version.o too).
The cause of the failure is that when listing prerequisites "Makefile"
references "config-host.h" by absolute path in some rules and by relative
path in others. Make cannot figure out that these references points to the
same file which leads to the race: the generation of "version.*" which
requires "$(BUILD_DIR)/config-host.h" is launched in parallel with the
generation of "config-host.h" needed by other "Makefile" targets.
This patch removes "$(BUILD_DIR)/" prefix from corresponding prerequisite
of "version.*". There is no other prerequisites "$(BUILD_DIR)/config-host.h"
found.
Also note that not every version of MSYS is able to build QEMU in parallel,
see: "http://sourceforge.net/p/mingw/bugs/1950/". The suggested version is
1.0.17.

The script mainly includes two parts: generate API for each event

Since in some cases the real emit behavior may change, for example,

control the behavior. As a result, the stubs at compile time

delete every single file including those under .git, if you do in-tree
build!
Rationale: A first "make distclean" will unset $(DSOSUF), a following
"make distclean" or "make clean" will find all the files and delete it.
Fix it by explicitly typing the file extensions here, and combine
multiple find invocations into one.

This patch adds loading, stamp checking and initialization of modules.
The init function of dynamic module is no longer directly called as
__attribute__((constructor)) in static linked version, it is called
only after passed the checking of presense of stamp symbol:
qemu_stamp_$RELEASEHASH
where $RELEASEHASH is generated by hashing version strings and content
of configure script.
With this, modules built from a different tree/version/configure will
not be loaded.
The module loading code requires gmodule-2.0.
Modules are searched under
- CONFIG_MODDIR
- executable folder (to allow running qemu-{img,io} in the build
directory)
- ../ of executable folder (to allow running system emulator in the
build directory)
Modules are linked under their subdir respectively, then copied to top
level of build directory for above convinience, e.g.:
$(BUILD_DIR)/block/curl.so -> $(BUILD_DIR)/block-curl.so

Add necessary rules and flags for shared object generation.
The new rules introduced here are:
1) %.o in $(common-obj-m) is compiled to %.o, then linked to %.so.
2) %.mo in $(common-obj-m) is the placeholder for %.so for pattern
matching in Makefile. It's linked to "-shared" with all its dependencies
(multiple *.o) as input. Which means the list of depended objects must
be specified in each sub-Makefile.objs:
foo.mo-objs := bar.o baz.o qux.o
in the same style with foo.o-cflags and foo.o-libs. The objects here
will be prefixed with "$(obj)/" if it's a subdirectory Makefile.objs.
3) For all files ending up in %.so, the following is added automatically:
foo.o-cflags += -fPIC -DBUILD_DSO
Also introduce --enable-modules in configure, the option will enable
support of shared object build. Otherwise objects are static linked to
executables.

Makefile.target includes rule.mak and unnested common-obj-y, then prefix
them with '../', this will ignore object specific QEMU_CFLAGS in subdir
Makefile.objs:
$(obj)/curl.o: QEMU_CFLAGS += $(CURL_CFLAGS)
Because $(obj) here is './block', instead of '../block'. This doesn't
hurt compiling because we basically build all .o from top Makefile,
before entering Makefile.target, but it will affact arriving per-object
libs support.
The starting point of $(obj) is passed in as argument of unnest-vars, as
well as nested variables, so that different Makefiles can pass in a
right value.

SBus probing works by detecting the presence of an FCode program

Adds VSS provider and requester as a qga-vss.dll, which is loaded by
Windows VSS service as well as by qemu-ga.
"provider.cpp" implements a basic stub of a software VSS provider.
Currently, this module only relays a frozen event from VSS service to the
agent, and thaw event from the agent to VSS service, to block VSS process
to keep the system frozen while snapshots are taken at the host.
To register the provider to the guest system as COM+ application, the type
library (.tlb) for qga-vss.dll is required. To build it from COM IDL (.idl),
VisualC++, MIDL and stdole2.tlb in Windows SDK are required. This patch also
adds pre-compiled .tlb file in the repository in order to enable
cross-compile qemu-ga.exe for Windows with VSS support.
"requester.cpp" provides the VSS requester to kick the VSS snapshot process.
Qemu-ga.exe works without the DLL, although fsfreeze features are disabled.
These functions are only supported in Windows 2003 or later. In older
systems, fsfreeze features are disabled.
In several versions of Windows which don't support attribute
VSS_VOLSNAP_ATTR_NO_AUTORECOVERY, DoSnapshotSet fails with error
VSS_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND. In this patch, we just ignore this error.
To solve this fundamentally, we need a framework to handle mount writable
snapshot on guests, which is required by VSS auto-recovery feature
(cleanup phase after a snapshot is taken).

To enable VSS support in qemu-ga for Windows, header files included in
VSS SDK are required.
The VSS support is enabled by the configure option like below:
./configure --with-vss-sdk="/path/to/VSS SDK"
If the path is omitted, it tries to search the headers from default paths
and VSS support is enabled only if the SDK is found.
VSS support is disabled if --without-vss-sdk or --with-vss-sdk=no is
specified.
VSS SDK is available from:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23490
To cross-compile using mingw, you need to setup the SDK on Windows
environments to extract headers. You can also extract the SDK headers on
POSIX environments using scripts/extract-vss-headers and msitools.
In addition, --with-win-sdk="/path/to/Windows SDK" option is also added to
specify path to Windows SDK, which may be used for native-compile of .tlb
file of qemu-ga VSS provider. However, this is usually unnecessary because
pre-compiled .tlb file is included.
