The block-commit QMP command required specifying the top and base nodes
of the commit jobs using the file name of that node. While this works
in simple cases (local files with absolute paths), the file names
generated for more complicated setups can be hard to predict.
The block-commit command has more problems than just this, so we want to
replace it altogether in the long run, but libvirt needs a reliable way
to address nodes now. So we don't want to wait for a new, cleaner
command, but just add the minimal thing needed right now.
This adds two new options top-node and base-node to the command, which
allow specifying node names instead. They are mutually exclusive with
the old options.

When doing drive mirror to a low speed shared storage, if there was heavy
BLK IO write workload in VM after the 'ready' event, drive mirror block job
can't be canceled immediately, it would keep running until the heavy BLK IO
workload stopped in the VM.
Libvirt depends on the current block-job-cancel semantics, which is that
when used without a flag after the 'ready' event, the command blocks
until data is in sync. However, these semantics are awkward in other
situations, for example, people may use drive mirror for realtime
backups while still wanting to use block live migration. Libvirt cannot
start a block live migration while another drive mirror is in progress,
but the user would rather abandon the backup attempt as broken and
proceed with the live migration than be stuck waiting for the current
drive mirror backup to finish.
The drive-mirror command already includes a 'force' flag, which libvirt
does not use, although it documented the flag as only being useful to
quit a job which is paused. However, since quitting a paused job has
the same effect as abandoning a backup in a non-paused job (namely, the
destination file is not in sync, and the command completes immediately),
we can just improve the documentation to make the force flag obviously
useful.

Expose the "manual" property via QAPI for the backup-related jobs.

Instead of automatically transitioning from PENDING to CONCLUDED, gate
the .prepare() and .commit() phases behind an explicit acknowledgement
provided by the QMP monitor if auto_finalize = false has been requested.
This allows us to perform graph changes in prepare and/or commit so that
graph changes do not occur autonomously without knowledge of the
controlling management layer.
Transactions that have reached the "PENDING" state together can all be
moved to invoke their finalization methods by issuing block_job_finalize
to any one job in the transaction.
Jobs in a transaction with mixed job->auto_finalize settings will all
remain stuck in the "PENDING" state, as if the entire transaction was
specified with auto_finalize = false. Jobs that specified
auto_finalize = true, however, will still not emit the PENDING event.

For jobs that have reached their CONCLUDED state, prior to having their
last reference put down (meaning jobs that have completed successfully,
unsuccessfully, or have been canceled), allow the user to dismiss the
job's lingering status report via block-job-dismiss.
This gives management APIs the chance to conclusively determine if a job
failed or succeeded, even if the event broadcast was missed.
Note: block_job_do_dismiss and block_job_decommission happen to do
exactly the same thing, but they're called from different semantic
contexts, so both aliases are kept to improve readability.
Note 2: Don't worry about the 0x04 flag definition for AUTO_DISMISS, she

Which commands ("verbs") are appropriate for jobs in which state is
also somewhat burdensome to keep track of.
As of this commit, it looks rather useless, but begins to look more
interesting the more states we add to the STM table.
A recurring theme is that no verb will apply to an 'undefined' job.
Further, it's not presently possible to restrict the "pause" or "resume"
verbs any more than they are in this commit because of the asynchronous
nature of how jobs enter the PAUSED state; justifications for some
seemingly erroneous applications are given below.
=====
Verbs
=====
Cancel: Any state except undefined.
Pause: Any state except undefined;
'created': Requests that the job pauses as it starts.
'running': Normal usage. (PAUSED)
'paused': The job may be paused for internal reasons,
but the user may wish to force an indefinite
user-pause, so this is allowed.
'ready': Normal usage. (STANDBY)
'standby': Same logic as above.
Resume: Any state except undefined;
'created': Will lift a user's pause-on-start request.
'running': Will lift a pause request before it takes effect.
'paused': Normal usage.
'ready': Will lift a pause request before it takes effect.
'standby': Normal usage.
Set-speed: Any state except undefined, though ready may not be meaningful.
Complete: Only a 'ready' job may accept a complete request.

Changes
=======
(1)
To facilitate "nice" error checking, all five major block-job verb
interfaces in blockjob.c now support an errp parameter:
- block_job_user_cancel is added as a new interface.
- block_job_user_pause gains an errp paramter
- block_job_user_resume gains an errp parameter
- block_job_set_speed already had an errp parameter.
- block_job_complete already had an errp parameter.
(2)
block-job-pause and block-job-resume will no longer no-op when trying
to pause an already paused job, or trying to resume a job that isn't
paused. These functions will now report that they did not perform the
action requested because it was not possible.
iotests have been adjusted to address this new behavior.
(3)
block-job-complete doesn't worry about checking !block_job_started,
because the permission table guards against this.
(4)
test-bdrv-drain's job implementation needs to announce that it is
'ready' now, in order to be completed.

qapi/qmp/types.h is a convenience header to include a number of
qapi/qmp/ headers. Since we rarely need all of the headers
qapi/qmp/types.h includes, we bypass it most of the time. Most of the

When a node is already associated with a BlockBackend the
x-blockdev-set-iothread command refuses to set the IOThread. This is to
prevent accidentally changing the IOThread when the nodes are in use.
When the nodes are created with -drive they automatically get a
BlockBackend. In that case we know nothing is using them yet and it's
safe to set the IOThread. Add a force boolean to override the check.

Currently there is no easy way for iotests to ensure that a BDS is bound
to a particular IOThread. Normally the virtio-blk device calls
blk_set_aio_context() when dataplane is enabled during guest driver
initialization. This never happens in iotests since -machine
accel=qtest means there is no guest activity (including device driver
initialization).
This patch adds a QMP command to explicitly assign IOThreads in test
cases. See qapi/block-core.json for a description of the command.

It is not necessary to hold AioContext across transactions anymore since
bdrv_drained_begin/end() is used to keep the nodes quiesced. In fact,
using the AioContext lock for this purpose was always buggy.
This patch reduces the scope of AioContext locked regions. This is not
just a cleanup but also fixes hangs that occur in BDRV_POLL_WHILE()
because it is unware of recursive locking and does not release the
AioContext the necessary number of times to allow progress to be made.

bdrv_unref() requires the AioContext lock because bdrv_flush() uses
BDRV_POLL_WHILE(), which assumes the AioContext is currently held. If
BDRV_POLL_WHILE() runs without AioContext held the

This commit eliminates the 1:1 relationship between BlockBackend and
throttle group state. Users will be able to create multiple throttle
nodes, each with its own throttle group state, in the future. The
throttle group state cannot be per-BlockBackend anymore, it must be
per-throttle node. This is done by gathering ThrottleGroup membership
details from BlockBackendPublic into ThrottleGroupMember and refactoring
existing code to use the structure.

A future patch will generate enums with "holes". NULL-termination
will cease to work then.

BlockdevRef is an alternate of BlockdevOptions (inline definition) and
str (reference to an existing block device by name). BlockdevRef
value "" is special: "no block device should be referenced." It's
actually interpreted that way in just one place: optional member
@backing of COW formats. Semantics:
* Present means "use this block device" as backing storage
* Absent means "default to the one stored in the image"
* Except "" means "don't use backing storage at all"
The first two are perfectly normal: when the parameter is absent, it
defaults to an implied value, but the value's meaning is the same.
The third one overloads the parameter with a second meaning. The
overloading is *implicit*, i.e. it's not visible in the types. Works
here, because "" is not a value block device ID.
Pressing argument values the schema accepts, but are semantically
invalid, into service to mean "do something else entirely" is not
general, as suitable invalid values need not exist. I also find it
ugly.
To clean this up, we could add a separate flag argument to suppress
@backing, or add a distinct value to @backing. This commit implements
the latter: add JSON null to the values of @backing, deprecate "".
Because we're so close to the 2.10 freeze, implement it in the
stupidest way possible: have qmp_blockdev_add() rewrite null to ""
before anything else can see the null. Works, because BlockdevRef
occurs only within arguments of blockdev-add. The proper way to do it
would be rewriting "" to null, preferably in a cleaner way, but that
requires fixing up code to work with null. Add a TODO comment for
that.

external_snapshot_prepare() calling bdrv_replace_node() to swap the

Outside blockjob.c, the block_job_iostatus_reset function is used once
in the monitor and once in BlockBackend. When we introduce the block
job mutex, block_job_iostatus_reset's client is going to be the block
layer (for which blockjob.c will take the block job mutex) rather than
the monitor (which will take the block job mutex by itself).
The monitor's call to block_job_iostatus_reset from the monitor comes
just before the sole call to block_job_user_resume, so reset the
iostatus directly from block_job_iostatus_reset. This will avoid
the need to introduce separate block_job_iostatus_reset and
block_job_iostatus_reset_locked APIs.
After making this change, move the function together with the others
that were moved in the previous patch.

Opening the backing image for the second time is bad, especially here
when it is also in use as the active image as the source. The
drive-backup job itself doesn't read from target->backing for COW,
instead it gets data from the write notifier, so it's not a big problem.
However, exporting the target to NBD etc. won't work, because of the
likely stale metadata cache.
Use BDRV_O_NO_BACKING in this case and manually set up the backing
BdrvChild.

Refactor backup_start as backup_job_create, which only creates the job,
but does not automatically start it. The old interface, 'backup_start',
is not kept in favor of limiting the number of nearly-identical interfaces
that would have to be edited to keep up with QAPI changes in the future.
Callers that wish to synchronously start the backup_block_job can
instead just call block_job_start immediately after calling
backup_job_create.
Transactions are updated to use the new interface, calling block_job_start
only during the .commit phase, which helps prevent race conditions where
jobs may finish before we even finish building the transaction. This may
happen, for instance, during empty block backup jobs.

checks whether it has a block job and acquires its AioContext.
We want to identify jobs by their ID and not by the block backend
they're attached to, so this patch ignores the backends altogether and
gets the job directly. Apart from making the code simpler, this will
allow us to find block jobs once they start having user-specified IDs.
To ensure backward compatibility we keep ERROR_CLASS_DEVICE_NOT_ACTIVE
as the error class if the job doesn't exist. In subsequent patches
we'll also need to keep the device name as the default job ID if the

Making each output visitor provide its own output collection
function was the only remaining reason for exposing visitor
sub-types to the rest of the code base. Add a polymorphic
visit_complete() function which is a no-op for input visitors,
and which populates an opaque pointer for output visitors. For
maximum type-safety, also add a parameter to the output visitor
constructors with a type-correct version of the output pointer,
and assert that the two uses match.
This approach was considered superior to either passing the
output parameter only during construction (action at a distance
during visit_free() feels awkward) or only during visit_complete()
(defeating type safety makes it easier to use incorrectly).
Most callers were function-local, and therefore a mechanical
conversion; the testsuite was a bit trickier, but the previous
cleanup patch minimized the churn here.
The visit_complete() function may be called at most once; doing
so lets us use transfer semantics rather than duplication or
ref-count semantics to get the just-built output back to the
caller, even though it means our behavior is not idempotent.

Currently, we are trying to move the backing BDS from the source to the
target in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() which is called from
mirror_exit(). However, mirror_complete() already tries to open the
target's backing chain with a call to bdrv_open_backing_file().
First, we should only set the target's backing BDS once. Second, the
mirroring block job has a better idea of what to set it to than the
generic code in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() (in fact, the latter's
conditions on when to move the backing BDS from source to target are not
really correct).
Therefore, remove that code from bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() and
leave it to mirror_complete().
Depending on what kind of mirroring is performed, we furthermore want to
use different strategies to open the target's backing chain:
- If blockdev-mirror is used, we can assume the user made sure that the
target already has the correct backing chain. In particular, we should
not try to open a backing file if the target does not have any yet.
- If drive-mirror with mode=absolute-paths is used, we can and should
reuse the already existing chain of nodes that the source BDS is in.
In case of sync=full, no backing BDS is required; with sync=top, we
just link the source's backing BDS to the target, and with sync=none,
we use the source BDS as the target's backing BDS.
We should not try to open these backing files anew because this would
lead to two BDSs existing per physical file in the backing chain, and
we would like to avoid such concurrent access.
- If drive-mirror with mode=existing is used, we have to use the
information provided in the physical image file which means opening
the target's backing chain completely anew, just as it has been done
already.
If the target's backing chain shares images with the source, this may
lead to multiple BDSs per physical image file. But since we cannot
reliably ascertain this case, there is nothing we can do about it.

As the patches to move I/O throttling to BlockBackend didn't make it in
time for the 2.6 release, but the release adds new ways of configuring
VMs whose behaviour would change once the move is done, we need to
outlaw such configurations temporarily.
The problem exists whenever a BDS has more users than just its BB, for
example it is used as a backing file for another node. (This wasn't
possible in 2.5 yet as we introduced node references to specify a
backing file only recently.) In these cases, the throttling would
apply to these other users now, but after moving throttling to the
BlockBackend the other users wouldn't be throttled any more.
This patch prevents making new references to a throttled node as well as
using monitor commands to throttle a node with multiple parents.
Compared to 2.5 this changes behaviour in some corner cases where
references were allowed before, like bs->file or Quorum children. It
seems reasonable to assume that users didn't use I/O throttling on such
low level nodes. With the upcoming move of throttling into BlockBackend,
such configurations won't be possible anyway.

a BDS one, so forbid it in places where we won't be able to support it
when the code finally matches the envisioned design.
We only allowed setting the cache mode of non-root nodes after the 2.5
release, so we're still free to make this change.
The target of block jobs is now always opened in a writeback mode
because it doesn't have a BlockBackend attached. This makes more sense
anyway because block jobs know when to flush. If the graph is modified
on job completion, the original cache mode moves to the new root, so
for the guest device writethough always stays enabled if it was
configured this way.

Ever since we first introduced bdrv_append() in commit 8802d1fd ('qapi:
Introduce blockdev-group-snapshot-sync command'), the copy-on-read flag
was moved to the new top layer when taking a snapshot. The only problem
is that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.
The use case for manually enabled CoR is to avoid reading data twice
from a slow remote image, so we want to save it to a local overlay, say
an ISO image accessed via HTTP to a local qcow2 overlay. When taking a
snapshot, we end up with a backing chain like this:
http <- local.qcow2 <- snap_overlay.qcow2
There is no point in doing CoR from local.qcow2 into snap_overlay.qcow2,
we just want to keep copying data from the remote source into
local.qcow2.
The other use case of CoR is in the context of streaming, which isn't
very interesting for bdrv_move_feature_fields() because op blockers
prevent this combination.
This patch makes the copy-on-read flag stay on the image for which it
was originally set and prevents it from being propagated to the new
overlay. It is no longer intended to move CoR to the BlockBackend level.
In order for this to make sense, we also need to keep the respective
image read-write.
As a side effect of these changes, creating a live snapshot image (as
opposed to using an existing externally created one) on top of a COR
block device works now. It used to fail because it tried to open its
backing file both read-only and with COR.

Simple unions were carrying a special case that hid their 'data'
QMP member from the resulting C struct, via the hack method
QAPISchemaObjectTypeVariant.simple_union_type(). But by using
the work we started by unboxing flat union and alternate
branches, coupled with the ability to visit the members of an
implicit type, we can now expose the simple union's implicit
type in qapi-types.h:
| struct q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificQCow2_wrapper {
| ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 *data;
| };
|
| struct q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificVmdk_wrapper {
| ImageInfoSpecificVmdk *data;
| };
...
| struct ImageInfoSpecific {
| ImageInfoSpecificKind type;
| union { /* union tag is @type */
| void *data;
|- ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 *qcow2;
|- ImageInfoSpecificVmdk *vmdk;
|+ q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificQCow2_wrapper qcow2;
|+ q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificVmdk_wrapper vmdk;
| } u;
| };
Doing this removes asymmetry between QAPI's QMP side and its
C side (both sides now expose 'data'), and means that the
treatment of a simple union as sugar for a flat union is now
equivalent in both languages (previously the two approaches used
a different layer of dereferencing, where the simple union could
be converted to a flat union with equivalent C layout but
different {} on the wire, or to an equivalent QMP wire form
but with different C representation). Using the implicit type
also lets us get rid of the simple_union_type() hack.
Of course, now all clients of simple unions have to adjust from
using su->u.member to using su->u.member.data; while this touches
a number of files in the tree, some earlier cleanup patches
helped minimize the change to the initialization of a temporary
variable rather than every single member access. The generated
qapi-visit.c code is also affected by the layout change:

removes the implicit monitor_add_blk() call from blk_new() (and
consequently the monitor_remove_blk() call from blk_delete(), too) and
thus blk_new() (and related functions) no longer take a BB name
argument.
In fact, there is only a single point where blk_new()/blk_new_open() is
called and the new BB is monitor-owned, and that is in blockdev_init().
Besides thus relieving us from having to invent names for all of the BBs
we use in qemu-img, this fixes a bug where qemu cannot create a new
image if there already is a monitor-owned BB named "image".
If a BB and its BDS tree are created in a single operation, as of this
patch the BDS tree will be created before the BB is given a name
(whereas it was the other way around before). This results in minor
change to the output of iotest 087, whose reference output is amended

This patch adds an option to the drive_add HMP command to create only a
BlockDriverState without a BlockBackend on top.
The motivation for this is that libvirt needs to specify options to a
migration target (specifically, detect-zeroes). drive-mirror doesn't
allow specifying options, and the proper way to do this is to create the
target BDS separately with blockdev-add (where you can specify options)
and then use blockdev-mirror to that BDS.
However, libvirt can't use blockdev-add as long as it is still
experimental, and we're expecting that it will still take some time, so
we need to resort to drive_add.
The problem with drive_add is that so far it always created a BB, and
BDSes with a BB can't be used as a mirroring target as long as we don't
support multiple BBs per BDS - and while we're working towards that
goal, it's another thing that will still take some time.
So to achieve the goal, the simplest solution to provide the
functionality now without adding one-off options to the mirror QMP
commands is to extend drive_add to create nodes without BBs.

Since commit 91a097e, we end up with a somewhat weird cache mode

inheritance for the snapshot overlay so that it is opened as
writethrough instead of unsafe now. The following bdrv_append() call to
put it on top of the tree swaps the WCE flag with the snapshot's backing
file (i.e. the originally given file), so what we eventually get is
cache=writeback on the temporary overlay and
cache=writethrough,cache.no-flush=on on the real image file.
This patch changes things so that the temporary overlay gets
cache=unsafe again like it used to, and the real images get whatever the
user specified. This means that cache.direct is now respected even with
snapshot=on, and in the case of committing changes, the final flush is

JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were
called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be
a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to
match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(),
where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the
otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's
time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the
'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument.
Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h
prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to
unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in
qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients.
Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and
those clients to match.
Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated
files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle
script to affect the rest of the code base:
$ spatch --sp-file script `git grep -l '\bvisit_' -- '**/*.[ch]'`
I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB
indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of
visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to
the syntactically invalid 'const char*const[] strings'). The
movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors
if any callers were missed.

This fixes a regression introduced with commit 3f09bfbc7. Multiple
bugs arise in conjunction with live snapshots and mirroring operations
(which include active layer commit).
After a live snapshot occurs, the active layer and the base layer both
have a non-NULL tqe_prev field in the device_list, although the base
node's tqe_prev field points to a NULL entry. This non-NULL tqe_prev
field occurs after the bdrv_append() in the external snapshot calls
change_parent_backing_link().
In change_parent_backing_link(), when the previous active layer is
removed from device_list, the device_list.tqe_prev pointer is not
set to NULL.
The operating scheme in the block layer is to indicate that a BDS belongs
in the bdrv_states device_list iff the device_list.tqe_prev pointer
is non-NULL.
This patch does two things:
1.) Introduces a new block layer helper bdrv_device_remove() to remove a
BDS from the device_list, and
2.) uses that new API, which also fixes the regression once used in
change_parent_backing_link().

While in the long term we want throttling to be its own block filter
BDS, in the short term we want it to be part of the BB instead of a BDS;
even in the long term we may want legacy throttling to be automatically
tied to the BB.
blockdev-insert-medium and blockdev-remove-medium do not retain
throttling information in the BB (deliberately so). Therefore, using
them means tying this information to a BDS, which would break the model
described above. (The same applies to other flags such as
detect_zeroes.) We probably want to move this information to the BB or
its own filter BDS before blockdev-{insert,remove}-medium can be
considered completely stable.
Therefore, mark these functions experimental for the time being.

The BlockAcctStats structure contains a list of BlockAcctTimedStats.
Each one of these collects statistics about the minimum, maximum and
average latencies of all I/O operations in a certain interval of time.
This patch adds a new "stats-intervals" option that allows defining
these intervals.

Allow a BlockJobTxn to be passed into backup_run, which
will allow the job to join a transactional group if present.
Propagate this new parameter outward into new QMP helper
functions in blockdev.c to allow transaction commands to
pass forward their BlockJobTxn object in a forthcoming patch.

Add reference count to block job, meanwhile move the ownership of the
reference to job->bs from the caller (which is released in two
completion callbacks) to the block job itself. It is necessary for
block_job_complete_sync to work, because block job shouldn't live longer
than its bs, as asserted in bdrv_delete.
Now block_job_complete_sync can be simplified.

These structures are misnomers, somewhat.
(1) BlockTransactionState is not state for a transaction,
but is rather state for a single transaction action.
Rename it "BlkActionState" to be more accurate.
(2) The BdrvActionOps describes operations for the BlkActionState,
above. This name might imply a 'BdrvAction' or a 'BdrvActionState',
which there isn't.
Rename this to 'BlkActionOps' to match 'BlkActionState'.
Lastly, update the surrounding in-line documentation and comments
to reflect the current nature of how Transactions operate.
This patch changes only comments and names, and should not affect
behavior in any way.

The "need_check_timer" is used to clear the "NEED_CHECK" flag in the
image header after a grace period once metadata update has finished. In
compliance to the bdrv_drain semantics we should make sure it remains
deleted once .bdrv_drain is called.
We cannot reuse qed_need_check_timer_cb because here it doesn't satisfy
the assertion. Do the "plug" and "flush" calls manually.

This command is still experimental, hence the name.
This is the companion to 'blockdev-add'. It allows deleting a
BlockBackend with its associated BlockDriverState tree, or a
BlockDriverState that is not attached to any backend.
In either case, the command fails if the reference count is greater
than 1 or the BlockDriverState has any parents.
