50465f94d2 python/machine: raise VMLaunchFailure exception from launch()
This allows us to pack in some extra information about the failure,
which guarantees that if the caller did not *intentionally* cause a
failure (by capturing this Exception), some pretty good clues will be
printed at the bottom of the traceback information.

This will help make failures in the event of a non-negative return code
more obvious when they go unhandled; the current behavior in
_post_shutdown() is to print a warning message only in the event of
signal-based terminations (for negative return codes).

(Note: In Python, catching BaseException instead of Exception catches a
broader array of Exception events, including SystemExit and
KeyboardInterrupt. We do not want to "wrap" such exceptions as a
VMLaunchFailure, because that will 'downgrade' the exception from a
BaseException to a regular Exception. We do, however, want to perform
cleanup in either case, so catch on the broadest scope and
wrap-and-re-raise only in the more targeted scope.)

3bc72e3aed python/aqmp: add __del__ method to legacy interface
asyncio can complain *very* loudly if you forget to back out of things
gracefully before the garbage collector starts destroying objects that
contain live references to asyncio Tasks.

The usual fix is just to remember to call aqmp.disconnect(), but for the
sake of the legacy wrapper and quick, one-off scripts where a graceful
shutdown is not necessarily of paramount imporance, add a courtesy
cleanup that will trigger prior to seeing screenfuls of confusing
asyncio tracebacks.

Note that we can't *always* save you from yourself; depending on when
the GC runs, you might just seriously be out of luck. The best we can do
in this case is to gently remind you to clean up after yourself.

(Still much better than multiple pages of incomprehensible python
warnings for the crime of forgetting to put your toys away.)

1e4d8b31be python: pin setuptools below v60.0.0
setuptools is a package that replaces the python stdlib 'distutils'. It
is generally installed by all venv-creating tools "by default". It isn't
actually needed at runtime for the qemu package, so our own setup.cfg
does not mention it as a dependency.

However, tox will create virtual environments that include it, and will
upgrade it to the very latest version. the 'venv' tool will also include
whichever version your host system happens to have.

Unfortunately, setuptools version 60.0.0 and above include a hack to
forcibly overwrite python's built-in distutils. The pylint tool that we
use to run code analysis checks on this package relies on distutils and
suffers regressions when setuptools >= 60.0.0 is present at all, see
https://github.com/PyCQA/pylint/issues/5704

Instruct tox and the 'check-dev' targets to avoid setuptools packages
that are too new, for now. Pipenv is unaffected, because setuptools 60
does not offer Python 3.6 support, and our pipenv config is pinned
against Python 3.6.

f75b20e4f1 python/aqmp: use absolute import statement
pylint's dependency astroid appears to have bugs in 2.9.1 and 2.9.2 (Dec
31 and Jan 3) that appear to erroneously expect the qemu namespace to
have an __init__.py file. astroid 2.9.3 (Jan 9) avoids that problem, but
appears to not understand a relative import within a namespace package.

Update the relative import - it was worth changing anyway, because these
packages will eventually be packaged and distributed separately.

1611e6cf4e python/machine: handle "fast" QEMU terminations
In the case that the QEMU process actually launches -- but then dies so
quickly that we can't establish a QMP connection to it -- QEMUMachine
currently calls _post_shutdown() assuming that it never launched the VM
process.

This isn't true, though: it "merely" may have failed to establish a QMP
connection and the process is in the middle of its own exit path.

If we don't wait for the subprocess, the caller may get a bogus `None`
return for .exitcode(). This behavior was observed from
device-crash-test; after the switch to Async QMP, the timings were
changed such that it was now seemingly possible to witness the failure
of "vm.launch()" *prior* to the exitcode becoming available.

The semantic of the `_launched` property is changed in this
patch. Instead of representing the condition "launch() executed
successfully", it will now represent "has forked a child process
successfully". This way, wait() when called in the exit path won't
become a no-op.

72b17fe715 python/machine: add instance disambiguator to default nickname
If you create two instances of QEMUMachine(), they'll both create the
same nickname by default -- which is not that helpful.

Luckily, they'll both create unique temporary directories ... but due to
user configuration, they may share logging and sockfile directories,
meaning two instances can collide. The Python logging will also be quite
confusing, with no differentiation between the two instances.

Add an instance disambiguator (The memory address of the instance) to
the default nickname to foolproof this in all cases.

f26bd6ff21 python/aqmp: Fix disconnect during capabilities negotiation
If we receive ConnectionResetError (ECONNRESET) while attempting to
perform capabilities negotiation -- prior to the establishment of the
async reader/writer tasks -- the disconnect function is not aware that
we are in an error pathway.

As a result, when attempting to close the StreamWriter, we'll see the
same ConnectionResetError that caused us to initiate a disconnect in the
first place, which will cause the disconnect task itself to fail, which
emits a CRITICAL logging event.

I still don't know if there's a smarter way to check to see if an
exception received at this point is "the same" exception as the one that
caused the initial disconnect, but for now the problem can be avoided by
improving the error pathway detection in the exit path.

49a608b8c2 python/machine: Handle QMP errors on close more meticulously
To use the AQMP backend, Machine just needs to be a little more diligent
about what happens when closing a QMP connection. The operation is no
longer a freebie in the async world; it may return errors encountered in
the async bottom half on incoming message receipt, etc.

(AQMP's disconnect, ultimately, serves as the quiescence point where all
async contexts are gathered together, and any final errors reported at
that point.)

Because async QMP continues to check for messages asynchronously, it's
almost certainly likely that the loop will have exited due to EOF after
issuing the last 'quit' command. That error will ultimately be bubbled
up when attempting to close the QMP connection. The manager class here
then is free to discard it -- if it was expected.

b9420e4f4b python/machine: remove has_quit argument
If we spy on the QMP commands instead, we don't need callers to remember
to pass it. Seems like a fair trade-off.

The one slightly weird bit is overloading this instance variable for
wait(), where we use it to mean "don't issue the qmp 'quit'
command". This means that wait() will "fail" if the QEMU process does
not terminate of its own accord.

In most cases, we probably did already actually issue quit -- some
iotests do this -- but in some others, we may be waiting for QEMU to
terminate for some other reason, such as a test wherein we tell the
guest (directly) to shut down.

It turns out you can do this directly from Python ... and because of
this, you don't need to worry about setting the inheritability of the
fds or spawning another process.

Doing this is helpful because it allows QEMUMonitorProtocol to keep its
file descriptor and socket object as private implementation
details. /that/ is helpful in turn because it allows me to write a
compatible, alternative implementation.

d911accf0a python/qmp: clear events on get_events() call
All callers in the tree *already* clear the events after a call to
get_events(). Do it automatically instead and update callsites to remove
the manual clear call.

These semantics are quite a bit easier to emulate with async QMP, and
nobody appears to be abusing some emergent properties of what happens if
you decide not to clear them, so let's dial down to the dumber, simpler
thing.

Specifically: callers of clear() right after a call to get_events() are
more likely expressing their desire to not see any events they just
retrieved, whereas callers of clear_events() not in relation to a recent
call to pull_event/get_events are likely expressing their desire to
simply drop *all* pending events straight onto the floor. In the sync
world, this is safe enough; in the async world it's nearly impossible to
promise that nothing happens between getting and clearing the
events.

Making the retrieval also clear the queue is vastly simpler.

3a3d84f5ec python/aqmp: Disable logging messages by default
AQMP is a library, and ideally it should not print error diagnostics
unless a user opts into seeing them. By default, Python will print all
WARNING, ERROR or CRITICAL messages to screen if no logging
configuration has been created by a client application.

In AQMP's case, ERROR logging statements are used to report additional
detail about runtime failures that will also eventually be reported to the
client library via an Exception, so these messages should not be
rendered by default.

(Why bother to have them at all, then? In async contexts, there may be
multiple Exceptions and we are only able to report one of them back to
the client application. It is not reasonably easy to predict ahead of
time if one or more of these Exceptions will be squelched. Therefore,
it's useful to log intermediate failures to help make sense of the
ultimate, resulting failure.)

Add a NullHandler that will suppress these messages until a client
application opts into logging via logging.basicConfig or similar. Note
that upon calling basicConfig(), this handler will *not* suppress these
messages from being displayed by the client's configuration.

6e2f6ec561 python/aqmp: add send_fd_scm
Add an implementation for send_fd_scm to the async QMP implementation.
Like socket_scm_helper mentions, a non-empty payload is required for
QEMU to process the ancillary data. A space is most useful because it
does not disturb the parsing of subsequent JSON objects.

A note on "voiding the warranty":

Python 3.11 removes support for calling sendmsg directly from a
transport's socket. There is no other interface for doing this, our use
case is, I suspect, "quite unique".

As far as I can tell, this is safe to do -- send_fd_scm is a synchronous
function and we can be guaranteed that the async coroutines will *not* be
running when it is invoked. In testing, it works correctly.

I investigated quite thoroughly the possibility of creating my own
asyncio Transport (The class that ultimately manages the raw socket
object) so that I could manage the socket myself, but this is so wildly
invasive and unportable I scrapped the idea. It would involve a lot of
copy-pasting of various python utilities and classes just to re-create
the same infrastructure, and for extremely little benefit. Nah.

Just boldly void the warranty instead, while I try to follow up on
https://bugs.python.org/issue43232

5690b4370b python: Update for pylint 2.10
A few new annoyances. Of note is the new warning for an unspecified
encoding when opening a text file, which actually does indicate a
potentially real problem; see
https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0597/#motivation

Use LC_CTYPE to determine an encoding to use for interpreting QEMU's
terminal output. Note that Python states: "language code and encoding
may be None if their values cannot be determined" -- use a platform
default as a backup.

Notes: Passing encoding=None will generate a suppressed warning on
Python 3.10+ that 'None' should not be passed as the encoding
argument. This behavior may be deprecated in the future and the default
switched to be a ubiquitous UTF-8. Opting in to the locale default will
be done by passing the encoding 'locale', but that isn't available in
3.6 through 3.9. Presumably this warning will be unsuppressed some time
prior to the actual switch and we can re-investigate these issues at
that time if necessary.

22305c2a08 python: Reduce strictness of pylint's duplicate-code check
Pylint prior to 2.8.3 (We pin at >= 2.8.0) includes function and method
signatures as part of its duplicate checking algorithm. This check does
not listen to pragmas, so the only way to disable it is to turn it off
completely or increase the minimum duplicate lines so that it doesn't
trigger for functions with long, multi-line signatures.

When we decide to upgrade to pylint 2.8.3 or greater, we will be able to
use 'ignore-signatures = true' to the config instead.

I'd prefer not to keep us on the very bleeding edge of pylint if I can
help it -- 2.8.3 came out only three days ago at time of writing.

19cf0031e4 python: remove auto-generated pyproject.toml file
For reasons that at-present escape me, pipenv insists on creating a stub
pyproject.toml file. This file is a nuisance, because its mere presence
changes the behavior of various tools.

For instance, this stub file will cause "pip install --user -e ." to
fail in spectacular fashion with misleading errors. "pip install -e ."
works okay, but for some reason pip does not support editable installs
to the user directory when using PEP517.

References:
  https://github.com/pypa/pip/pull/9990
  https://github.com/pypa/pip/issues/7953

As outlined in ea1213b7cc, it is still too early for us to consider
moving to a PEP-517 exclusive package. We must support older
distributions, so squash the annoyance for now. (Python 3.6 shipped Dec
2016, PEP517 support showed up in pip sometime in 2019 or so.)

Add 'pyproject.toml' to the 'make clean' target, and also delete it
after every pipenv invocation issued by the Makefile.

This is a *third* way to run the Python tests. Unlike the first two
(check-pipenv, check-tox), this version does not require any specific
interpreter version -- making it a lot easier to tell people to run it
as a quick smoketest prior to submission to GitLab CI.

Summary:

  Checked via GitLab CI:
    - check-pipenv: tests our oldest python & dependencies
    - check-tox: tests newest dependencies on all non-EOL python versions
  Executed only incidentally:
    - check-dev: tests newest dependencies on whichever python version

('make check' does not set up any environment at all, it just runs the
tests in your current environment. All four invocations perform the
exact same tests, just in different execution environments.)

rename this test 'check-pipenv' so that it matches the CI job
'check-python-pipenv'.

Remove the "If you don't know which test to run" hint, because it's not
actually likely you have Python 3.6 installed to be able to run the
test. It's still the test I'd most prefer you to run, but it's not the
test you are most likely to be able to run.

3afa3501cb python: Re-lock pipenv at *oldest* supported versions
tox is already testing the most recent versions. Let's use pipenv to
test the oldest versions we claim to support. This matches the stylistic
choice to have pipenv always test our oldest supported Python version, 3.6.

The effect of this is that the python-check-pipenv CI job on gitlab will
now test against much older versions of these linters, which will help
highlight incompatible changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Update instructions for adding and bumping versions in setup.cfg. The
reason for deleting the line that gets added to Pipfile is largely just
to avoid having the version minimums specified in multiple places in
config checked into the tree.

(This patch was written by deleting Pipfile and Pipfile.lock, then
explicitly installing each dependency manually at a specific
version. Then, I restored the prior Pipfile and re-ran `pipenv lock
--dev --keep-outdated` to re-add the qemu dependency back to the pipenv
environment while keeping the "old" packages. It's annoying, yes, but I
think the improvement to test coverage is worthwhile.)

6be7206efc scripts/qmp-shell: move to python/qemu/qmp/qmp_shell.py
The script will be unavailable for a commit or two, which will help
preserve development history attached to the new file. A forwarder will
be added shortly afterwards.

With qmp_shell in the python qemu.qmp package, now it is fully type
checked, linted, etc. via the Python CI. It will be quite a bit harder
to accidentally break it again in the future.

c63f3b0b29 python: add optional FUSE dependencies
In preparation for moving qom-fuse over to the python package, we need
some new dependencies to support it.

Add an optional 'fusepy' dependency that users of the package can opt
into with e.g. "pip install qemu[fuse]" which installs the requirements
necessary to obtain the additional functionality.

Add the same fusepy dependency to the 'devel' extras group --
unfortunately I do not see a way for optional groups to imply other
optional groups at present, so the dependency is repeated. The
development group needs to include the full set of dependencies for the
purpose of static analysis of all features offered by this library.

Lastly, add the [fuse] extras group to tox's configuration as a
workaround so that if a stale tox environment is found when running
`make check-tox`, tox will know to rebuild its environments.

30ec845c59 scripts/qom-fuse: add static type hints
Because fusepy does not have type hints, add some targeted warning
suppressions.

Namely, we need to allow subclassing something of an unknown type (in
qom_fuse.py), and we need to allow missing imports (recorded against
fuse itself) because mypy will be unable to import fusepy (even when
installed) as it has no types nor type stubs available.

Note: Until now, it was possible to run invocations like 'mypy qemu/'
from ./python and have that work. However, these targeted suppressions
require that you run 'mypy -p qemu/' instead. The correct, canonical
invocation is recorded in ./python/tests/mypy.sh and all of the various
CI invocations always use this correct form.

9d0ead63bf python/pipenv: Update Pipfile.lock
In a previous commit, I added tox to the development requirements of the
Python library. I never bothered to add them to the Pipfile, because
they aren't needed there. Here, I sync it anyway in its own commit so
that when we add new packages later that the diffstats will not
confusingly appear to pull in lots of extra packages.

Ideally I could tell Pipenv simply not to install these, but it doesn't
seem to support that, exactly. The alternative is removing Tox from the
development requires, which I'd rather not do.

The other alternative is re-specifying all of the dependencies of
setup.cfg in the Pipfile, which I'd also rather not do.

3c8de38c85 python: add tox support
This is intended to be a manually run, non-CI script.

Use tox to test the linters against all python versions from 3.6 to
3.10. This will only work if you actually have those versions installed
locally, but Fedora makes this easy:

> sudo dnf install python3.6 python3.7 python3.8 python3.9 python3.10

Unlike the pipenv tests (make venv-check), this pulls "whichever"
versions of the python packages, so they are unpinned and may break as
time goes on. In the case that breakages are found, setup.cfg should be
amended accordingly to avoid the bad dependant versions, or the code
should be amended to work around the issue.

With confidence that the tests pass on 3.6 through 3.10 inclusive, add
the appropriate classifiers to setup.cfg to indicate which versions we
claim to support.

Tox 3.18.0 or above is required to use the 'allowlist_externals' option.

31622b2a8a python: add avocado-framework and tests
Try using avocado to manage our various tests; even though right now
they're only invoking shell scripts and not really running any
python-native code.

Create tests/, and add shell scripts which call out to mypy, flake8,
pylint and isort to enforce the standards in this directory.

Add avocado-framework to the setup.cfg development dependencies, and add
avocado.cfg to store some preferences for how we'd like the test output
to look.

Finally, add avocado-framework to the Pipfile environment and lock the
new dependencies. We are using avocado >= 87.0 here to take advantage of
some features that Cleber has helpfully added to make the test output
here *very* friendly and easy to read for developers that might chance
upon the output in Gitlab CI.

[Note: ALL of the dependencies get updated to the most modern versions
that exist at the time of this writing. No way around it that I have
seen. Not ideal, but so it goes.]

Provided you have the right development dependencies (mypy, flake8,
isort, pylint, and now avocado-framework) You should be able to run
"avocado --config avocado.cfg run tests/" from the python folder to run
all of these linters with the correct arguments.

(A forthcoming commit adds the much easier 'make check'.)

dbe75f5566 python: add devel package requirements to setuptools
setuptools doesn't have a formal understanding of development requires,
but it has an optional feataures section. Fine; add a "devel" feature
and add the requirements to it.

To avoid duplication, we can modify pipenv to install qemu[devel]
instead. This enables us to run invocations like "pip install -e
.[devel]" and test the package on bleeding-edge packages beyond those
specified in Pipfile.lock.

Importantly, this also allows us to install the qemu development
packages in a non-networked mode: `pip3 install --no-index -e .[devel]`
will now fail if the proper development dependencies are not already
met. This can be useful for automated build scripts where fetching
network packages may be undesirable.

0542a4c957 python: add mypy to pipenv
0.730 appears to be about the oldest version that works with the
features we want, including nice human readable output (to make sure

0.770, however, supports adding 'strict' to the config file, so require
at least 0.770.

Now that we are checking a namespace package, we need to tell mypy to
allow PEP420 namespaces, so modify the mypy config as part of the move.

mypy can now be run from the python root by typing 'mypy -p qemu'.

A note on mypy invocation: Running it as "mypy qemu/" changes the import
path detection mechanisms in mypy slightly, and it will fail. See
https://github.com/python/mypy/issues/8584 for a decent entry point with
more breadcrumbs on the various behaviors that contribute to this subtle
difference.

pipenv is a tool used for managing virtual environments with pinned,
explicit dependencies. It is used for precisely recreating python
virtual environments.

pipenv uses two files to do this:

(1) Pipfile, which is similar in purpose and scope to what setup.cfg
lists. It specifies the requisite minimum to get a functional
environment for using this package.

(2) Pipfile.lock, which is similar in purpose to `pip freeze >
requirements.txt`. It specifies a canonical virtual environment used for
deployment or testing. This ensures that all users have repeatable
results.

The primary benefit of using this tool is to ensure *rock solid*
repeatable CI results with a known set of packages. Although I endeavor
to support as many versions as I can, the fluid nature of the Python
toolchain often means tailoring code for fairly specific versions.

Note that pipenv is *not* required to install or use this module; this is
purely for the sake of repeatable testing by CI or developers.

Here, a "blank" pipfile is added with no dependencies, but specifies
Python 3.6 for the virtual environment.

Pipfile will specify our version minimums, while Pipfile.lock specifies
an exact loadout of packages that were known to operate correctly. This
latter file provides the real value for easy setup of container images
and CI environments.

eae4e442ca python: add MANIFEST.in
When creating a source or binary distribution via 'python3 setup.py
<sdist|bdist>', the VERSION and PACKAGE.rst files aren't bundled by
default. Create a MANIFEST.in file that instructs the build tools to
include these so that installation from these files won't fail.

This is required by 'tox', as well as by the tooling needed to upload
packages to PyPI.

Exclude the 'README.rst' file -- that's intended as a guidebook to our
source tree, not a file that needs to be distributed.

93128815af python: add directory structure README.rst files
Add short readmes to python/, python/qemu/, python/qemu/machine,
python/qemu/qmp, and python/qemu/utils that explain the directory
hierarchy. These readmes are visible when browsing the source on
e.g. gitlab/github and are designed to help new developers/users quickly
make sense of the source tree.

They are not designed for inclusion in a published manual.

3afc32906f python: add VERSION file
Python infrastructure as it exists today is not capable reliably of
single-sourcing a package version from a parent directory. The authors
of pip are working to correct this, but as of today this is not possible.

The problem is that when using pip to build and install a python
package, it copies files over to a temporary directory and performs its
build there. This loses access to any information in the parent
directory, including git itself.

Further, Python versions have a standard (PEP 440) that may or may not
follow QEMU's versioning. In general, it does; but naturally QEMU does
not follow PEP 440. To avoid any automatically-generated conflict, a
manual version file is preferred.

I am proposing:

- Python tooling follows the QEMU version, indirectly, but with a major
version of 0 to indicate that the API is not expected to be
stable. This would mean version 0.5.2.0, 0.5.1.1, 0.5.3.0, etc.

- In the event that a Python package needs to be updated independently
of the QEMU version, a pre-release alpha version should be preferred,
but *only* after inclusion to the qemu development or stable branches.

e.g. 0.5.2.0a1, 0.5.2.0a2, and so on should be preferred prior to
  5.2.0's release.

- The Python core tooling makes absolutely no version compatibility
checks or constraints. It *may* work with releases of QEMU from the
past or future, but it is not required to.

i.e., "qemu.machine" will, for now, remain in lock-step with QEMU.

- We reserve the right to split the qemu package into independently
versioned subpackages at a later date. This might allow for us to
begin versioning QMP independently from QEMU at a later date, if
  we so choose.

Implement this versioning scheme by adding a VERSION file and setting it
to 0.6.0.0a1.

ea1213b7cc python: add qemu package installer
Add setup.cfg and setup.py, necessary for installing a package via
pip. Add a ReST document (PACKAGE.rst) explaining the basics of what
this package is for and who to contact for more information. This
document will be used as the landing page for the package on PyPI.

List the subpackages we intend to package by name instead of using
find_namespace because find_namespace will naively also packages tests,
things it finds in the dist/ folder, etc. I could not figure out how to
modify this behavior; adding allow/deny lists to setuptools kept
changing the packaged hierarchy. This works, roll with it.

I am not yet using a pyproject.toml style package manifest, because
"editable" installs are not defined (yet?) by PEP-517/518.

I consider editable installs crucial for development, though they have
(apparently) always been somewhat poorly defined.

Pip now (19.2 and later) now supports editable installs for projects
using pyproject.toml manifests, but might require the use of the
--no-use-pep517 flag, which somewhat defeats the point. Full support for
setup.py-less editable installs was not introduced until pip 21.1.1:
7a95720e79

For now, while the dust settles, stick with the de-facto
setup.py/setup.cfg combination supported by setuptools. It will be worth
re-evaluating this point again in the future when our supported build
platforms all ship a fairly modern pip.

beb6b57b3b python: create qemu packages
move python/qemu/*.py to python/qemu/[machine, qmp, utils]/*.py and
update import directives across the tree.

This is done to create a PEP420 namespace package, in which we may
create subpackages. To do this, the namespace directory ("qemu") should
not have any modules in it. Those files will go into new 'machine',
'qmp' and 'utils' subpackages instead.

Implement machine/__init__.py making the top-level classes and functions
from its various modules available directly inside the package. Change
qmp.py to qmp/__init__.py similarly, such that all of the useful QMP
library classes are available directly from "qemu.qmp" instead of
"qemu.qmp.qmp".

_post_shutdown is called after failed launches (see launch()), and
unconditionally after every call to shutdown(), and therefore also on
