nathanw 42aa7dd2a0 Since this uses memcpy(), we need to pull in string.h to make this compile 
on the alpha. Now confirmed working on that platform.

sommerfeld 4b5ec636eb Fix obvious LP64 and aliasing bogons in checksum verification code. 
Should fix spurious "bad checksum" errors on alpha, but not yet tested
on that platform.

cgd d87d2f2837 use -DNO_EDITCOMPLETE -DNO_ABOUT rather than -DSMALL. The latter excludes 
the progress meter code, which isn't particularly large and which is _very_
useful when downloading distribution sets from a not-local network.

nisimura 8dd0e06ba1 - Hide memory mapped VDAC hardware register layouts using the array 
element access instead of C bitfield (hello, BCPL).
- XXX Some TURBOchannel framebuffers might need shutdownhooks().  It
seems not necessarily hardware sprite cursor images are re-initialized
by DECstation PROMs upon exits from kernel.
- XXX It'd be an arguable point to allow user programs to change the
shade of gray freely for pixel value 0 and 1.

cgd 026efaa662 replace "/sbin/ping -c 2 %s" with "/sbin/ping -v -c 5 -w 5 -o -n %s". 
Shouldn't bother doing DNS lookups or wait a really long time,
should display verbose output and quit after the host has been
successfully pinged even once.  count bumped up to 5 to give boards
which take a while to do media autoselection time to do their thing.

cgd 834b871ea5 don't make /etc/hosts's contents a message. there's no point and it 
makes some things harder, for instance... Deal correctly with the case
where the user-supplied hostname is already fully qualified with the
domain name they supplied.  Addresses PR#6955.

bouyer 4fd8325ec6 Resurect the old register read/write test for non-ATA/ATAPI drives, to avoid 
false matches on controllers which properly respond to a WDCC_RECAL command.
Should close PR port-i386/7702 (the author tested this patch, and said it
solves his problem).

cgd beba4bb3e5 replace lots of wclear()/wmove() calls with calls to msg_clear(). wmove() 
to 0,0 was unnecessary because wclear() is documented to do that.  also,
the immediate wrefresh() done by msg_clear() means that if we can take
advantage of full screen clear sequence, we will.
