The VNC server already has the ability to listen on multiple sockets.
Converting it to use the QIONetListener APIs though, will reduce the
amount of code in the VNC server and improve the clarity of what is
left.

ui: convert GTK and SDL1 frontends to keycodemapdb
changed the x_keymap.c keymap so that its target was qcodes instead of
qnums. It updated the GTK frontend to take account of this change, but
forgot to update the SDL1 frontend. Thus the SDL frontend was getting
qcodes but dispatching them as if they were qnums. IOW, keyboard input
was completely hosed with SDL1. Since the keyboard layout tables are
still all based on qnums, it is easier to just keep SDL1 using qnums as
it will be deleted in a few releases time.

The point of writing a macro embedded in a 'do { ... } while (0)'
loop (particularly if the macro has multiple statements or would
otherwise end with an 'if' statement) is so that the macro can be
used as a drop-in statement with the caller supplying the
trailing ';'. Although our coding style frowns on brace-less 'if':
if (cond)
statement;
else
something else;
that is the classic case where failure to use do/while(0) wrapping
would cause the 'else' to pair with any embedded 'if' in the macro
rather than the intended outer 'if'. But conversely, if the macro
includes an embedded ';', then the same brace-less coding style
would now have two statements, making the 'else' a syntax error
rather than pairing with the outer 'if'. Thus, even though our
coding style with required braces is not impacted, ending a macro
with ';' makes our code harder to port to projects that use
brace-less styles.
The change should have no semantic impact. I was not able to
fully compile-test all of the changes (as some of them are
examples of the ugly bit-rotting debug print statements that are
completely elided by default, and I didn't want to recompile
with the necessary -D witnesses - cleaning those up is left as a
bite-sized task for another day); I did, however, audit that for
all files touched, all callers of the changed macros DID supply
a trailing ';' at the callsite, and did not appear to be used
as part of a brace-less conditional.

When SDL2 windows change focus while a key is held, the window that
receives the focus also receives a new KeyDown event, without an
autorepeat flag. This means that if a WM places the qemu console
over the main window after Ctrl-Alt-2, the console closes immediately
after opening. Then, the main window receives the KeyDown event again
and the whole process repeats.
This patch makes the SDL2 UI ignore the KeyDown events on a window that
just received the focus, if the GUI modifier was held. The ignore flag
is reset on a first KeyUp event. This effectively works around the issue
above.

While the QIOChannel APIs for reading/writing data return ssize_t, with negative
value indicating an error, the VNC code passes this return value through the
vnc_client_io_error() method. This detects the error condition, disconnects the
client and returns 0 to indicate error. Thus all the VNC helper methods should
return size_t (unsigned), and misleading comments which refer to the possibility

The previous patches fix problems with throttling of forced framebuffer updates
and audio data capture that would cause the QEMU output buffer size to grow
without bound. Those fixes are graceful in that once the client catches up with
reading data from the server, everything continues operating normally.
There is some data which the server sends to the client that is impractical to
throttle. Specifically there are various pseudo framebuffer update encodings to
inform the client of things like desktop resizes, pointer changes, audio
playback start/stop, LED state and so on. These generally only involve sending
a very small amount of data to the client, but a malicious guest might be able
to do things that trigger these changes at a very high rate. Throttling them is
not practical as missed or delayed events would cause broken behaviour for the
client.
This patch thus takes a more forceful approach of setting an absolute upper
bound on the amount of data we permit to be present in the output buffer at
any time. The previous patch set a threshold for throttling the output buffer
by allowing an amount of data equivalent to one complete framebuffer update and
one seconds worth of audio data. On top of this it allowed for one further
forced framebuffer update to be queued.
To be conservative, we thus take that throttling threshold and multiply it by
5 to form an absolute upper bound. If this bound is hit during vnc_write() we
forceably disconnect the client, refusing to queue further data. This limit is
high enough that it should never be hit unless a malicious client is trying to
exploit the sever, or the network is completely saturated preventing any sending
of data on the socket.
This completes the fix for CVE-2017-15124 started in the previous patches.

The VNC server must throttle data sent to the client to prevent the 'output'
buffer size growing without bound, if the client stops reading data off the
socket (either maliciously or due to stalled/slow network connection).
The current throttling is very crude because it simply checks whether the
output buffer offset is zero. This check is disabled if the client has requested
a forced update, because we want to send these as soon as possible.
As a result, the VNC client can cause QEMU to allocate arbitrary amounts of RAM.
They can first start something in the guest that triggers lots of framebuffer
updates eg play a youtube video. Then repeatedly send full framebuffer update
requests, but never read data back from the server. This can easily make QEMU's
VNC server send buffer consume 100MB of RAM per second, until the OOM killer
starts reaping processes (hopefully the rogue QEMU process, but it might pick
others...).
To address this we make the throttling more intelligent, so we can throttle
full updates. When we get a forced update request, we keep track of exactly how
much data we put on the output buffer. We will not process a subsequent forced
update request until this data has been fully sent on the wire. We always allow
one forced update request to be in flight, regardless of what data is queued
for incremental updates or audio data. The slight complication is that we do
not initially know how much data an update will send, as this is done in the
background by the VNC job thread. So we must track the fact that the job thread
has an update pending, and not process any further updates until this job is
has been completed & put data on the output buffer.
This unbounded memory growth affects all VNC server configurations supported by
QEMU, with no workaround possible. The mitigating factor is that it can only be
triggered by a client that has authenticated with the VNC server, and who is
able to trigger a large quantity of framebuffer updates or audio samples from
the guest OS. Mostly they'll just succeed in getting the OOM killer to kill
their own QEMU process, but its possible other processes can get taken out as
collateral damage.

The VNC server must throttle data sent to the client to prevent the 'output'
buffer size growing without bound, if the client stops reading data off the
socket (either maliciously or due to stalled/slow network connection).
The current throttling is very crude because it simply checks whether the
output buffer offset is zero. This check must be disabled if audio capture is
enabled, because when streaming audio the output buffer offset will rarely be
zero due to queued audio data, and so this would starve framebuffer updates.
As a result, the VNC client can cause QEMU to allocate arbitrary amounts of RAM.
They can first start something in the guest that triggers lots of framebuffer
updates eg play a youtube video. Then enable audio capture, and simply never
read data back from the server. This can easily make QEMU's VNC server send
buffer consume 100MB of RAM per second, until the OOM killer starts reaping
processes (hopefully the rogue QEMU process, but it might pick others...).
To address this we make the throttling more intelligent, so we can throttle
when audio capture is active too. To determine how to throttle incremental
updates or audio data, we calculate a size threshold. Normally the threshold is
the approximate number of bytes associated with a single complete framebuffer
update. ie width * height * bytes per pixel. We'll send incremental updates
until we hit this threshold, at which point we'll stop sending updates until
data has been written to the wire, causing the output buffer offset to fall
back below the threshold.
If audio capture is enabled, we increase the size of the threshold to also
allow for upto 1 seconds worth of audio data samples. ie nchannels * bytes
per sample * frequency. This allows the output buffer to have a mixture of
incremental framebuffer updates and audio data queued, but once the threshold
is exceeded, audio data will be dropped and incremental updates will be
throttled.
This unbounded memory growth affects all VNC server configurations supported by
QEMU, with no workaround possible. The mitigating factor is that it can only be
triggered by a client that has authenticated with the VNC server, and who is

According to the RFB protocol, a client sends one or more framebuffer update
requests to the server. The server can reply with a single framebuffer update
response, that covers all previously received requests. Once the client has
read this update from the server, it may send further framebuffer update
requests to monitor future changes. The client is free to delay sending the
framebuffer update request if it needs to throttle the amount of data it is
reading from the server.
The QEMU VNC server, however, has never correctly handled the framebuffer
update requests. Once QEMU has received an update request, it will continue to
send client updates forever, even if the client hasn't asked for further
updates. This prevents the client from throttling back data it gets from the
server. This change fixes the flawed logic such that after a set of updates are
sent out, QEMU waits for a further update request before sending more data.

When we encode data for writing with SASL, we encode the entire pending output
buffer. The subsequent write, however, may not be able to send the full encoded
data in one go though, particularly with a slow network. So we delay setting the
output buffer offset back to zero until all the SASL encoded data is sent.
Between encoding the data and completing sending of the SASL encoded data,
however, more data might have been placed on the pending output buffer. So it
is not valid to set offset back to zero. Instead we must keep track of how much
data we consumed during encoding and subtract only that amount.
With the current bug we would be throwing away some pending data without having
sent it at all. By sheer luck this did not previously cause any serious problem
because appending data to the send buffer is always an atomic action, so we

The vnc_update_client() method checks the 'has_dirty' flag to see if there are
dirty regions that are pending to send to the client. Regardless of this flag,
if a forced update is requested, updates must be sent. For unknown reasons
though, the code also tries to sent updates if audio capture is enabled. This
makes no sense as audio capture state does not impact framebuffer contents, so
this check is removed.

Added a check for vs->disconnecting at the very start of the
vnc_update_client method. This means that the very next "if"
statement check for !vs->disconnecting always evaluates true,
and is thus redundant. This in turn means the vs->disconnecting

The https://gitlab.com/keycodemap/keycodemapdb/ repo contains a
data file mapping between all the different scancode/keycode/keysym
sets that are known, and a tool to auto-generate lookup tables for
different combinations.
It is used by GTK-VNC, SPICE-GTK and libvirt for mapping keys.
Using it in QEMU will let us replace many hand written lookup
tables with auto-generated tables from a master data source,
reducing bugs. Adding new QKeyCodes will now only require the
master table to be updated, all ~20 other tables will be
automatically updated to follow.

The processing of the scancodes for PAUSE/BREAK has been broken since
the conversion to qcodes in:
commit 8c10e0baf0
Author: Hervé Poussineau <hpoussin@reactos.org>
Date: Thu Sep 15 22:06:26 2016 +0200
ps2: use QEMU qcodes instead of scancodes
When using a VNC client, with the raw scancode extension, the client
will send a scancode of 0xc6 for both PAUSE and BREAK. There is mistakenly
no entry in the qcode_to_number table for this scancode, so
ps2_keyboard_event() just generates a log message and discards the
scancode
When using a SPICE client, it will also send 0xc6 for BREAK, but
will send 0xe1 0x1d 0x45 0xe1 0x9d 0xc5 for PAUSE. There is no
entry in the qcode_to_number table for the scancode 0xe1 because
it is a special XT keyboard prefix not mapping to any QKeyCode.
Again ps2_keyboard_event() just generates a log message and discards
the scancode. The following 0x1d, 0x45, 0x9d, 0xc5 scancodes get
handled correctly. Rather than trying to handle 3 byte sequences
of scancodes in the PS/2 driver, special case the SPICE input
code so that it captures the 3 byte pause sequence and turns it
into a Pause QKeyCode.

The current VNC default keyboard delay is 1ms. With that we're constantly
typing faster than the guest receives keyboard events from an XHCI attached
USB HID device.
The default keyboard delay time in the input layer however is 10ms. I don't know
how that number came to be, but empirical tests on some OpenQA driven ARM
systems show that 10ms really is a reasonable default number for the delay.
This patch moves the VNC delay also to 10ms. That way our default is much
safer (good!) and also consistent with the input layer default (also good!).

I had two problems with QEMU on macOS:
1) Sometimes when alt-tabbing to QEMU it would act as if the 'a' key
was pressed so I'd get 'aaaaaaaaa....'.
2) Using Sikuli to programatically send keys to the QEMU window text
like "foo_bar" would come out as "fooa-bar".
They looked similar and after much digging the problem turned out to be
the same. When QEMU's ui/cocoa.m received an NSFlagsChanged NSEvent it
looked at the keyCode to determine what modifier key changed. This
usually works fine but sometimes the keyCode is 0 and the app should
instead be looking at the modifierFlags bitmask. Key code 0 is the 'a'
key.
I added code that handles keyCode == 0 differently. It checks the
modifierFlags and if they differ from QEMU's idea of which modifier
keys are currently pressed it toggles those changed keys.
This fixes my problems and seems work fine.

still have to audit that I didn't miss any host-triggered spots;
changing the signature forces us to double-check that I correctly

Since command line options can change whether a guest reset request

This patch adds support for absolute pointer events to the input-linux
subsystem. This support was omitted from the original input-linux patch,
however most of the code required for it is already in place.
Support for absolute events is especially useful for guests with vga
passthrough. Since they have a physical monitor, none of normal channels
for sending video output (vnc, etc) are used, meaning they also can't be
used to send absolute input events. This leaves QMP as the only option
to send absolute input into vga passthrough guests, which is not its
intended use and is not efficient.
This patch allows, for example, uinput to be used to create virtual
absolute input devices. This lets you build external systems which share
physical input devices between guests. Without absolute input
capability, such external systems can't seamlessly share pointer devices
between guests.

will further fill the queue with upcoming events.
VNC uses qemu_input_event_send_key_delay(), not SPICE, which results
in a different input behaviour on pause: VNC will queue the events
(except the first that is discarded), SPICE will discard all events.
Don't queue delay if paused, and provide same behaviour on SPICE and

The evdev devices in input-linux.c are read in blocks of one whole
event. If there are not enough bytes available, they are discarded,
instead of being kept for the next read operation. This results in
lost events, of even non-working devices.
This patch keeps track of the number of bytes to be read to fill up
a whole event, and then handle it.
Changes from v1 to v2:
- Fix: Calculate offset on each iteration
Changes from v2 to v3:
- Fix coding style
- Store offset instead of bytes to be read

BQL to ensure all no vCPUs are stuck waiting for it, hence causing a
deadlock. However the actual helper needs to take the BQL especially
as we'll be messing with device emulation bits during the update which
all assume BQL is held.
We make a minor cpu_reloading_memory_map which must try and unlock the

pretty inconvinient, because it is simply impossible to connect to port

tcg: drop global lock during TCG code execution
..broke the assumption that updates to the GUI couldn't happen at the
same time as TCG vCPUs where running. As a result the TCG vCPU could
still be updating a directly mapped frame-buffer while the display
side was updating. This would cause artefacts to appear when the
update code assumed that memory block hadn't changed.
The simplest solution is to ensure the two things can't happen at the
same time like the old BQL locking scheme. Here we use the solution
introduced for MTTCG and schedule the update as async_safe_work when
we know no vCPUs can be running.

[ kraxel: updated comment clarifying the display adapters are buggy

There is a special code path (dpy_gfx_copy) to allow graphic emulation
notify user interface code about bitblit operations carryed out by
guests. It is supported by cirrus and vnc server. The intended purpose
is to optimize display scrolls and just send over the scroll op instead
of a full display update.
This is rarely used these days though because modern guests simply don't
use the cirrus blitter any more. Any linux guest using the cirrus drm
driver doesn't. Any windows guest newer than winxp doesn't ship with a
cirrus driver any more and thus uses the cirrus as simple framebuffer.
So this code tends to bitrot and bugs can go unnoticed for a long time.
See for example commit "3e10c3e vnc: fix qemu crash because of SIGSEGV"
which fixes a bug lingering in the code for almost a year, added by
commit "c7628bf vnc: only alloc server surface with clients connected".
Also the vnc server will throttle the frame rate in case it figures the
network can't keep up (send buffers are full). This doesn't work with
dpy_gfx_copy, for any copy operation sent to the vnc client we have to
send all outstanding updates beforehand, otherwise the vnc client might
run the client side blit on outdated data and thereby corrupt the
display. So this dpy_gfx_copy "optimization" might even make things
worse on slow network links.
Lets kill it once for all.
Oh, and one more reason: Turns out (after writing the patch) we have a
security bug in that code path ...

objects for plain & websockets VNC is quite complex already and will
need further enhancements shortly. Refactor it into separate methods
to avoid vnc_display_open getting even larger. As a side effect of
the refactoring, it is now possible to specify a listen address for
the websocket server explicitly. e.g,
-vnc localhost:5900,websockets=0.0.0.0:8080

Currently there is only a single listener for plain VNC and
a single listener for websockets VNC. This means that if
getaddrinfo() returns multiple IP addresses, for a hostname,
the VNC server can only listen on one of them. This is
just bearable if listening on wildcard interface, or if
the host only has a single network interface to listen on,
but if there are multiple NICs and the VNC server needs
to listen on 2 or more specific IP addresses, it can't be
done.
This refactors the VncDisplay state so that it holds an
array of listening sockets, but still only listens on

Currently the VNC authentication info is emitted at the
top level of the query-vnc-servers data. This is wrong
because the authentication scheme differs between plain
and websockets when TLS is enabled. We should instead
report auth against the individual servers. e.g.
(QEMU) query-vnc-servers
{
"return": [

"clients": [],

When qemu vnc server is trying to send large update to clients,
there might be a situation when system responds with something
like EAGAIN, indicating that there's no system memory to send
that much data (depending on the network speed, client and server
and what is happening). In this case, something like this happens
on qemu side (from strace):
sendmsg(16, {msg_name(0)=NULL,
msg_iov(1)=[{"\244\"..., 729186}],
msg_controllen=0, msg_flags=0}, 0) = 103950
sendmsg(16, {msg_name(0)=NULL,
msg_iov(1)=[{"lz\346"..., 1559618}],
msg_controllen=0, msg_flags=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN
sendmsg(-1, {msg_name(0)=NULL,
msg_iov(1)=[{"lz\346"..., 1559618}],
msg_controllen=0, msg_flags=0}, 0) = -1 EBADF
qemu closes the socket before the retry, and obviously it gets EBADF
when trying to send to -1.
This is because there WAS a special handling for EAGAIN, but now it doesn't
work anymore, after commit 04d2529da2, because
now in all error-like cases we initiate vnc disconnect.
This change were introduced in qemu 2.6, and caused numerous grief for many
people, resulting in their vnc clients reporting sporadic random disconnects
from vnc server.
Fix that by doing the disconnect only when necessary, i.e. omitting this
very case of EAGAIN.
Hopefully the existing condition (comparing with QIO_CHANNEL_ERR_BLOCK)
is sufficient, as the original code (before the above commit) were
checking for other errno values too.
Apparently there's another (semi?)bug exist somewhere here, since the
code tries to write to fd# -1, it probably should check if the connection
is open before. But this isn't important.

Commit 2cb5d2a4 removed setlocale() for everything except LC_MESSAGES in
order to avoid unwanted side effects such as using the wrong decimal
separator in generated JSON objects. However, the problem that unsetting
LC_CTYPE caused is that non-ASCII characters are considered
non-printable now and therefore the GTK menus display question marks for
accented letters, Chinese characters etc.
A first attempt to fix this [1] was rejected because even just setting
LC_CTYPE to the user's locale (and thereby modifying the semantics of
the ctype.h functions) could have unwanted effects that we're not aware
of yet.
Recently, however, glibc introduced a new locale "C.utf-8" that just
uses UTF-8 as its charset, but otherwise leaves the semantics alone.
Just setting the right character set is enough for our use case, so we
can just hardcode this one without having to be afraid of nasty side
effects.
Older systems that don't have the new locale will continue displaying
question marks, but this should fix the problem for most users.

Turn Chardev into Object.
qemu_chr_alloc() is replaced by the qemu_chardev_new() constructor. It
will call qemu_char_open() to open/intialize the chardev with the
ChardevCommon *backend settings.
The CharDriver::create() callback is turned into a ChardevClass::open()
which is called from the newly introduced qemu_chardev_open().
"chardev-gdb" and "chardev-hci" are internal chardev and aren't
creatable directly with -chardev. Use a new internal flag to disable
them. We may want to use TYPE_USER_CREATABLE interface instead, or
perhaps allow -chardev usage.
Although in general we keep typename and macros private, unless the type
is being used by some other file, in this patch, all types and common
helper macros for qemu-char.c are in char.h. This is to help transition
now (some types must be declared early, while some aren't shared) and
when splitting in several units. This is to be improved later.

Use a single allocation for CharDriverState, this avoids extra
allocations & pointers, and is a step towards more object-oriented
CharDriver.
Gtk console is a bit peculiar, gd_vc_chr_set_echo() used to have a
temporary VirtualConsole to save the echo bit. Instead now, we consider
whether vcd->console is set or not, and restore the echo bit saved in
VCDriverState when calling gd_vc_vte_init().
The casts added are temporary, they are replaced with QOM type-safe
macros in a later patch in this series.

If the buffer is not big enough, snprintf() does not return the number
of bytes that have been written to the buffer, but the number of bytes
that would be needed for writing the whole string. By using this value
for the following vnc_write() calls, we send some junk at the end of
the name in case the qemu_name is longer than 1017 bytes, which could
confuse the VNC clients. Fix this by adding an additional size check
here.

Since the hanlders are associated with a CharBackend, rather than the
CharDriverState, it is more appropriate to store in CharBackend. This
avoids the handler copy dance in qemu_chr_fe_set_handlers() then
mux_chr_update_read_handler(), by storing the CharBackend pointer
directly.
Also a mux CharDriver should go through mux->backends[focused], since
chr->be will stay NULL. Before that, it was possible to call
chr->handler by mistake with surprising results, for ex through
qemu_chr_be_can_write(), which would result in calling the last set
handler front end, not the one with focus.

Query input device keys, initialize state accordingly, so the correct
state is reflected in case any key is pressed at initialization time.
There is a high chance for this to actually happen for the 'enter' key
in case you start qemu with a terminal command (directly or virsh).
When finding any pressed keys the input grab is delayed until all keys
are lifted, to avoid confusing guest and host with appearently stuck

Most of the fields in VncState are initialized in the
vnc_connect() method, but some are done in vnc_init_state()
instead.
The purpose of having vnc_init_state() is to delay starting
of the VNC wire protocol until after the websockets handshake
has completed. As such the vnc_init_state() method only needs
to be used for initialization that is dependant on the wire
protocol running.
This also lets us get rid of the initialized boolean flag

Reset the key modifiers upon client connect
This was valid at this time because there was only the

The persistent data was later split off into VncDisplay

In order to remove the need for BlockBackend names in the external API,
we want to allow qdev device names in all device related commands.
This converts blockdev-change-medium to accept a qdev device name.

Update all qemu_uuid users as well, especially get rid of the duplicated
low level g_strdup_printf, sscanf and snprintf calls with QEMU UUID API.
Since qemu_uuid_parse is quite tangled with qemu_uuid, its switching to
QemuUUID is done here too to keep everything in sync and avoid code
churn.

In the QEMU monitor pane of the gtk user interface, the backspace
key is not working at all. This happens because of a missing mapping
of the key in the qcode_to_keysym[] table. Thus let's add an entry
there to get the backspace key working again.

Coverity identifies that at the top of the while(1) loop
in curses_refresh() the variable nextchr is always ERR,
and so the else case of the first if() is dead code.
Remove this dead code, and narrow the scope of the
nextchr variable to the place where it's used.
(This confused logic has been present since the curses
code was added to QEMU in 2008.)

Coverity spots that there is no bounds check before we
access the curses2qemu[] array. Add one, bringing this
code path into line with the one that looks up entries
in curses2keysym[].
In theory getch() shouldn't return out of range keycodes,
but it's better not to assume this.

vnc: only alloc server surface with clients connected
the VNC server was changed so that the 'vd->server' pixman
image was only allocated when a client is connected.
Since then if a client disconnects and then reconnects to
the VNC server all they will see is a black screen until
they do something that triggers a refresh. On a graphical
desktop this is not often noticed since there's many things
going on which cause a refresh. On a plain text console it
is really obvious since nothing refreshes frequently.
The problem is that the VNC server didn't update the guest
dirty bitmap, so still believes its server image is in sync
with the guest contents.
To fix this we must explicitly mark the entire guest desktop
as dirty after re-creating the server surface. Move this
logic into vnc_update_server_surface() so it is guaranteed
to be call in all code paths that re-create the surface
instead of only in vnc_dpy_switch()

The vnc_server_info_get will allocate the VncServerInfo
struct and then call vnc_init_basic_info_from_server_addr
to populate the basic fields. If this returns an error
though, the qapi_free_VncServerInfo call will then crash
because the VncServerInfo struct instance was not properly
NULL-initialized and thus contains random stack garbage.

commit 095497ff added thread local storage for the color counting
palette. Unfortunately, a VncPalette is about 7kB on a x86_64 system.
This memory is reserved from the stack of every thread and it
exhausted the stack space of a libxenstore thread.
Fix this by allocating memory only for the VNC encoding thread.

In tight_encode_indexed_rect32, buf(or src)’s size is count. In for loop,
the logic is supposed to be that i is an index into src, i should be
incremented when incrementing src.
This is broken when src is incremented but i is not before while loop,
resulting in off-by-one bug in while loop.

It may happen that vnc connections linger in disconnecting state forever
because VncState happens to be in a state where vnc_update_client()
exists early and never reaches the vnc_disconnect_finish() call at the
bottom of the function. Fix that by doing an additinal check at the
start of the function.
