These examples require longer explanations or have explanations that
require markup to look reasonable when rendered and so use the longer
form of the ".. qmp-example::" directive.
By using the :annotated: option, the content in the example block is
assumed *not* to be a code block literal and is instead parsed as normal
rST - with the exception that any code literal blocks after `::` will
assumed to be a QMP code literal block.
Note: There's one title-less conversion in this patch that comes along
for the ride because it's part of a larger "Examples" block that was
better to convert all at once.

When an Example section has a brief explanation, convert it to a
qmp-example:: section using the :title: option.
Rule of thumb: If the title can fit on a single line and requires no rST
markup, it's a good candidate for using the :title: option of
qmp-example.
In this patch, trailing punctuation is removed from the title section
for consistent headline aesthetics. In just one case, specifics of the
example are removed to make the title read better.

Use the no-option form of ".. qmp-example::" to convert any Examples
that do not have any form of caption or explanation whatsoever. Note
that in a few cases, example sections are split into two or more
separate example blocks. This is only done stylistically to create a
delineation between two or more logically independent examples.

[Markup fixed in one place]

We do not need a dedicated section for notes. By eliminating a specially
parsed section, these notes can be treated as normal rST paragraphs in
the new QMP reference manual, and can be placed and styled much more
flexibly.
Convert all existing "Note" and "Notes" sections to pure rST. As part of
the conversion, capitalize the first letter of each sentence and add
trailing punctuation where appropriate to ensure notes look sensible and
consistent in rendered HTML documentation. Markup is also re-aligned to
the de-facto standard of 3 spaces for directives.
Update docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst to reflect the new paradigm, and
update the QAPI parser to prohibit "Note" sections while suggesting a
new syntax. The exact formatting to use is a matter of taste, but a good
candidate is simply:
.. note:: lorem ipsum ...
... dolor sit amet ...
... consectetur adipiscing elit ...
... but there are other choices, too. The Sphinx readthedocs theme
offers theming for the following forms (capitalization unimportant); all
are adorned with a (!) symbol () in the title bar for rendered HTML
docs.
See
https://sphinx-rtd-theme.readthedocs.io/en/stable/demo/demo.html#admonitions
for examples of each directive/admonition in use.

This patch uses ".. note::" almost everywhere, with just two "caution"
directives. Several instances of "Notes:" have been converted to
merely ".. note::", or multiple ".. note::" where appropriate.
".. admonition:: notes" is used in a few places where we had an
ordered list of multiple notes that would not make sense as
standalone/separate admonitions. Two "Note:" following "Example:"
have been turned into ordinary paragraphs within the example.
NOTE: Because qapidoc.py does not attempt to preserve source ordering of
sections, the conversion of Notes from a "tagged section" to an
"untagged section" means that rendering order for some notes *may
change* as a result of this patch. The forthcoming qapidoc.py rewrite
strictly preserves source ordering in the rendered documentation, so
this issue will be rectified in the new generator.

As a consequence, when vim tries to apply syntax highlight rules

Using Python syntax highlighting produces much better results, and

The current doc generation doesn't care much about indentation levels,
but we would like to switch to an rST format, and rST does care about
indentation.
Make the doc comments more strongly consistent about indentation
for multiline constructs like:
@arg: description line 1
description line 2
Returns: line one
line 2
so that there is always exactly one space after the colon, and
subsequent lines align with the first.
This commit is a purely whitespace change, and it does not alter the
generated .texi files (because the texi generation code strips away
all the extra whitespace). This does mean that we end up with some
over-length lines.
Note that when the documentation for an argument fits on a single
line like this:
@arg: one line only
then stray extra spaces after the ':' don't affect the rST output, so
I have not attempted to methodically fix them, though the preference
is a single space here too.

As with the previous patch to qemu-nbd, the nbd-server-start QMP command

First the client must create a QAuthZ object instance using the

With the experimental x-nbd-server-add-bitmap command, there was
a window of time where an NBD client could see the export but not
the associated dirty bitmap, which can cause a client that planned
on using the dirty bitmap to be forced to treat the entire image
as dirty as a safety fallback. Furthermore, if the QMP client
successfully exports a disk but then fails to add the bitmap, it
has to take on the burden of removing the export. Since we don't
allow changing the exposed dirty bitmap (whether to a different
bitmap, or removing advertisement of the bitmap), it is nicer to
make the bitmap tied to the export at the time the export is
created, with automatic failure to export if the bitmap is not
available.
The experimental command included an optional 'bitmap-export-name'
field for remapping the name exposed over NBD to be different from
the bitmap name stored on disk. However, my libvirt demo code
for implementing differential backups on top of persistent bitmaps
did not need to take advantage of that feature (it is instead
possible to create a new temporary bitmap with the desired name,
use block-dirty-bitmap-merge to merge one or more persistent
bitmaps into the temporary, then associate the temporary with the
NBD export, if control is needed over the exported bitmap name).
Hence, I'm not copying that part of the experiment over to the
stable addition. For more details on the libvirt demo, see
https://www.redhat.com/archives/libvir-list/2018-October/msg01254.html,
https://kvmforum2018.sched.com/event/FzuB/facilitating-incremental-backup-eric-blake-red-hat
This patch focuses on the user interface, and reduces (but does
not completely eliminate) the window where an NBD client can see
the export but not the dirty bitmap, with less work to clean up
after errors. Later patches will add further cleanups now that
this interface is declared stable via a single QMP command,
including removing the race window.

node name and to not show it to clients.
This also allows creating several exports per device.

The generated QEMU QMP reference is now structured as follows:
1.1 Introduction
1.2 Stability Considerations
1.3 Common data types
1.4 Socket data types
1.5 VM run state
1.6 Cryptography
1.7 Block devices
1.7.1 Block core (VM unrelated)
1.7.2 QAPI block definitions (vm unrelated)
1.8 Character devices
1.9 Net devices
1.10 Rocker switch device
1.11 TPM (trusted platform module) devices
1.12 Remote desktop
1.12.1 Spice
1.12.2 VNC
1.13 Input
1.14 Migration
1.15 Transactions
1.16 Tracing
1.17 QMP introspection
1.18 Miscellanea
Section "1.18 Miscellanea" is still too big: it documents 134 symbols.
Section "1.7.1 Block core (VM unrelated)" is also rather big: 128
symbols. All the others are of reasonable size.

In the process of getting rid of docs/qmp-commands.txt, we managed
to regress on some of the text that changed after the point where
the move was first branched and when the move actually occurred.
For example, commit 3282eca for blockdev-snapshot re-added the
extra "options" layer which had been cleaned up in commit 0153d2f.
This clears up all regressions identified over the range

as well as a cleanup to x-blockdev-remove-medium to prefer
'id' over 'device' (matching the cleanup for 'eject').

The next commit will rename SocketAddressFlat to SocketAddress, and
the commit after that will replace most uses of SocketAddressLegacy by
SocketAddress, replacing most of this commit's renames right back.
Note that checkpatch emits a few "line over 80 characters" warnings.
The long lines are all temporary; the SocketAddressLegacy replacement
will shorten them again.

We traditionally mark optional members #optional in the doc comment.
Before commit 3313b61, this was entirely manual.
Commit 3313b61 added some automation because its qapi2texi.py relied
on #optional to determine whether a member is optional. This is no
longer the case since the previous commit: the only thing qapi2texi.py
still does with #optional is stripping it out. We still reject bogus
qapi-schema.json and six places for qga/qapi-schema.json.
Thus, you can't actually rely on #optional to see whether something is
optional. Yet we still make people add it manually. That's just
busy-work.
Drop the code to check, fix up and strip out #optional, along with all
instances of #optional. To keep it out, add code to reject it, to be
dropped again once the dust settles.
