Currently, qcow2_create() only parses the QemuOpts and then calls
qcow2_co_create() for the actual image creation, which includes both the
creation of the actual file on the file system and writing a valid empty
qcow2 image into that file.
The plan is that qcow2_co_create() becomes the function that implements
the functionality for a future 'blockdev-create' QMP command, which only
creates the qcow2 layer on an already opened file node.
This is a first step towards that goal: Let's move out anything that
deals with the protocol layer from qcow2_co_create() into
qcow2_create(). This means that qcow2_co_create() doesn't need a file
name any more.

This function checks that the offset and size of a table are valid.
While the offset checks are fine, the size check is too generic, since
it only verifies that the total size in bytes fits in a 64-bit
integer. In practice all tables used in qcow2 have much smaller size
limits, so the size needs to be checked again for each table using its
actual limit.
This patch generalizes this function by allowing the caller to specify
the maximum size for that table. In addition to that it allows passing
an Error variable.
The function is also renamed and made public since we're going to use
it in other parts of the code.

In my "build everything" tree, a change to the types in
qapi-schema.json triggers a recompile of about 4800 out of 5100
objects.
The previous commit split up qmp-commands.h, qmp-event.h, qmp-visit.h,
qapi-types.h. Each of these headers still includes all its shards.
Reduce compile time by including just the shards we actually need.
To illustrate the benefits: adding a type to qapi/migration.json now
recompiles some 2300 instead of 4800 objects. The next commit will
improve it further.

The align_offset() function is equivalent to the ROUND_UP() macro so
there's no need to use the former. The ROUND_UP() name is also a bit
more explicit.
This patch uses ROUND_UP() instead of the slower QEMU_ALIGN_UP()
because align_offset() already requires that the second parameter is a
power of two.

qcow2_create2() calls qemu_co_mutex_lock(). Only a coroutine_fn may
call another coroutine_fn. In fact, qcow2_create2 is always called from
coroutine context.

BlockDriver->bdrv_create() has been called from coroutine context since
commit 5b7e1542cf ("block: make
bdrv_create adopt coroutine").
Make this explicit by renaming to .bdrv_co_create_opts() and add the
coroutine_fn annotation. This makes it obvious to block driver authors
that they may yield, use CoMutex, or other coroutine_fn APIs.
bdrv_co_create is reserved for the QAPI-based version that Kevin is
working on.

We are gradually moving away from sector-based interfaces, towards
byte-based. Update the qcow2 driver accordingly.
For now, we are ignoring the 'want_zero' hint. However, it should
be relatively straightforward to honor the hint as a way to return
larger *pnum values when we have consecutive clusters with the same
data/zero status but which differ only in having non-consecutive
mappings.

Now that the code is ready to handle L2 slices we can finally add an
option to allow configuring their size.
An L2 slice is the portion of an L2 table that is read by the qcow2
cache. Until now the cache was always reading full L2 tables, and
since the L2 table size is equal to the cluster size this was not very
efficient with large clusters. Here's a more detailed explanation of
why it makes sense to have smaller cache entries in order to load L2
data:

This patch introduces a new command-line option to the qcow2 driver
named l2-cache-entry-size (cf. l2-cache-size). The cache entry size
has the same restrictions as the cluster size: it must be a power of
two and it has the same range of allowed values, with the additional
requirement that it must not be larger than the cluster size.
The L2 cache entry size (L2 slice size) remains equal to the cluster
size for now by default, so this feature must be explicitly enabled.
Although my tests show that 4KB slices consistently improve
performance and give the best results, let's wait and make more tests
with different cluster sizes before deciding on an optimal default.
Now that the cache entry size is not necessarily equal to the cluster
size we need to reflect that in the MIN_L2_CACHE_SIZE documentation.
That minimum value is a requirement of the COW algorithm: we need to
read two L2 slices (and not two L2 tables) in order to do COW, see
l2_allocate() for the actual code.

The qcow2_truncate() code is mostly independent from whether
we're using L2 slices or full L2 tables, but in full and
falloc preallocation modes new L2 tables are allocated using
qcow2_alloc_cluster_link_l2(). Therefore the code needs to be
modified to ensure that all nb_clusters that are processed in each
call can be allocated with just one L2 slice.

The BDRVQcow2State structure contains an l2_size field, which stores
the number of 64-bit entries in an L2 table.
For efficiency reasons we want to be able to load slices instead of
full L2 tables, so we need to know how many entries an L2 slice can
hold.
An L2 slice is the portion of an L2 table that is loaded by the qcow2
cache. At the moment that cache can only load complete tables,
therefore an L2 slice has the same size as an L2 table (one cluster)
and l2_size == l2_slice_size.
Later we'll allow smaller slices, but until then we have to use this
new l2_slice_size field to make the rest of the code ready for that.

To maintain load/store disabled bitmap there is new approach:
- deprecate @autoload flag of block-dirty-bitmap-add, make it ignored
- store enabled bitmaps as "auto" to qcow2
- store disabled bitmaps without "auto" flag to qcow2
- on qcow2 open load "auto" bitmaps as enabled and others
as disabled (except in_use bitmaps)
Also, adjust iotests 165 and 176 appropriately.

We don't need the can_write_zeroes_with_unmap field in
BlockDriverInfo, because it is redundant information with
supported_zero_flags & BDRV_REQ_MAY_UNMAP. Note that
BlockDriverInfo and supported_zero_flags are both per-device
settings, rather than global state about the driver as a
whole, which means one or both of these bits of information
can already be conditional. Let's audit how they were set:
crypto: always setting can_write_ to false is pointless (the
struct starts life zero-initialized), no use of supported_
nbd: just recently fixed to set can_write_ if supported_
includes MAY_UNMAP (thus this commit effectively reverts
bca80059e and solves the problem mentioned there in a more
global way)
file-posix, iscsi, qcow2: can_write_ is conditional, while
supported_ was unconditional; but passing MAY_UNMAP would
fail with ENOTSUP if the condition wasn't met
qed: can_write_ is unconditional, but pwrite_zeroes lacks
support for MAY_UNMAP and supported_ is not set. Perhaps
support can be added later (since it would be similar to
qcow2), but for now claiming false is no real loss
all other drivers: can_write_ is not set, and supported_ is
either unset or a passthrough
Simplify the code by moving the conditional into
supported_zero_flags for all drivers, then dropping the
now-unused BDI field. For callers that relied on
bdrv_can_write_zeroes_with_unmap(), we return the same
per-device settings for drivers that had conditions (no
observable change in behavior there); and can now return
true (instead of false) for drivers that support passthrough
(for example, the commit driver) which gives those drivers
the same fix as nbd just got in bca80059e. For callers that
relied on supported_zero_flags, we now have a few more places
that can avoid a wasted call to pwrite_zeroes() that will
just fail with ENOTSUP.

qapi/qmp/types.h is a convenience header to include a number of
qapi/qmp/ headers. Since we rarely need all of the headers
qapi/qmp/types.h includes, we bypass it most of the time. Most of the
places that use it don't need all the headers, either.
Include the necessary headers directly, and drop qapi/qmp/types.h.

If an image contains persistent bitmaps, we cannot use the
fast path of bdrv_make_empty() to clear the image during
qemu-img commit, because that will lose the clusters related
to the bitmaps.
Also leave a comment in qcow2_read_extensions to remind future
feature additions to think about fast-path removal, since we
just barely fixed the same bug for LUKS encryption.
It's a pain that qemu-img has not yet been taught to manipulate,
or even at a very minimum display, information about persistent
bitmaps; instead, we have to use QMP commands. It's also a
pain that only qeury-block and x-debug-block-dirty-bitmap-sha256
will allow bitmap introspection; but the former requires the
node to be hooked to a block device, and the latter is experimental.

After committing the qcow2 image contents into the base image, qemu-img
will call bdrv_make_empty to drop the payload in the layered image.
When this is done for qcow2 images, it blows away the LUKS encryption
header, making the resulting image unusable. There are two codepaths
for emptying a qcow2 image, and the second (slower) codepath leaves
the LUKS header intact, so force use of that codepath.

Currently if trying to change encryption parameters on a qcow2 image, qemu-img
will abort. We already explicitly check for attempt to change encrypt.format
but missed other parameters like encrypt.key-secret. Rather than list each
parameter, just blacklist changing of all parameters with a 'encrypt.' prefix.

The crypto header is initialized only when QEMU is creating a new
image, so there's no chance of this happening on a corrupted image.
If QEMU is really trying to allocate the header overlapping other
existing metadata sections then this is a serious bug in QEMU itself
so let's add an assertion.

qcow2_do_open() is checking that header.refcount_table_clusters is not
too large, but it doesn't check that it's greater than zero. Apart
from the fact that an image like that is obviously corrupted, trying
to use it crashes QEMU since we end up with a null s->refcount_table
after qcow2_refcount_init().
These images can however be repaired, so allow opening them if the
BDRV_O_CHECK flag is set.

Some qcow2 functions (at least perform_cow()) expect s->lock to be
taken. Therefore, if we want to make use of them, we should execute
preallocate() (as "preallocate_co") in a coroutine so that we can use
the qemu_co_mutex_* functions.

A qcow2 image file's length is not required to have a length that is a
multiple of the cluster size. However, qcow2_refcount_area() expects an
aligned value for its @start_offset parameter, so we need to round
@old_file_size up to the next cluster boundary.

We are gradually moving away from sector-based interfaces, towards
byte-based. In the common case, allocation is unlikely to ever use
values that are not naturally sector-aligned, but it is possible
that byte-based values will let us be more precise about allocation
at the end of an unaligned file that can do byte-based access.
Changing the name of the function from bdrv_get_block_status_above()
to bdrv_block_status_above() ensures that the compiler enforces that
all callers are updated. Likewise, since it a byte interface allows
an offset mapping that might not be sector aligned, split the mapping
out of the return value and into a pass-by-reference parameter. For
now, the io.c layer still assert()s that all uses are sector-aligned,
but that can be relaxed when a later patch implements byte-based
block status in the drivers.
For the most part this patch is just the addition of scaling at the
callers followed by inverse scaling at bdrv_block_status(), plus
updates for the new split return interface. But some code,
particularly bdrv_block_status(), gets a lot simpler because it no
longer has to mess with sectors. Likewise, mirror code no longer
computes s->granularity >> BDRV_SECTOR_BITS, and can therefore drop
an assertion about alignment because the loop no longer depends on
alignment (never mind that we don't really have a driver that
reports sub-sector alignments, so it's not really possible to test
the effect of sub-sector mirroring). Fix a neighboring assertion to
use is_power_of_2 while there.
For ease of review, bdrv_get_block_status() was tackled separately.

Not all callers care about which BDS owns the mapping for a given
range of the file. This patch merely simplifies the callers by
consolidating the logic in the common call point, while guaranteeing
a non-NULL file to all the driver callbacks, for no semantic change.
The only caller that does not care about pnum is bdrv_is_allocated,
as invoked by vvfat; we can likewise add assertions that the rest
of the stack does not have to worry about a NULL pnum.
Furthermore, this will also set the stage for a future cleanup: when
a caller does not care about which BDS owns an offset, it would be
nice to allow the driver to optimize things to not have to return
BDRV_BLOCK_OFFSET_VALID in the first place. In the case of fragmented
allocation (for example, it's fairly easy to create a qcow2 image
where consecutive guest addresses are not at consecutive host
addresses), the current contract requires bdrv_get_block_status()
to clamp *pnum to the limit where host addresses are no longer
consecutive, but allowing a NULL file means that *pnum could be
set to the full length of known-allocated data.

Now after shrinking the image, at the end of the image file, there might be a
tail that probably will never be used. So we can find the last used cluster and
cut the tail.

This patch add shrinking of the image file for qcow2. As a result, this allows
us to reduce the virtual image size and free up space on the disk without
copying the image. Image can be fragmented and shrink is done by punching holes
in the image file.

In a previous patch (3dc6f86936) we
converted uses of error_report("warning:"... to use warn_report()
instead. This was to help standardise on a single method of printing
warnings to the user.
There appears to have been some cases that slipped through in patch sets
applied around the same time, this patch catches the few remaining
cases.
All of the warnings were changed using this command:

After calling qcow2_inactivate(), all qcow2 caches must be flushed, but this
may not happen, because the last call qcow2_store_persistent_dirty_bitmaps()
can lead to marking l2/refcont cache as dirty.
Let's move qcow2_store_persistent_dirty_bitmaps() before the caсhe flushing
to fix it.

Currently, a FOO_lookup is an array of strings terminated by a NULL
sentinel.
A future patch will generate enums with "holes". NULL-termination
will cease to work then.
To prepare for that, store the length in the FOO_lookup by wrapping it
in a struct and adding a member for the length.
The sentinel will be dropped next.

Most qcow2 files are uncompressed so it is wasteful to allocate (32 + 1)
* cluster_size + 512 bytes upfront. Allocate s->cluster_cache and
s->cluster_data when the first read operation is performance on a
compressed cluster.
The buffers are freed in .bdrv_close(). .bdrv_open() no longer has any
code paths that can allocate these buffers, so remove the free functions
in the error code path.
This patch can result in significant memory savings when many qcow2
disks are attached or backing file chains are long:
Before 12.81% (1,023,193,088B)
After 5.36% (393,893,888B)

We used MAX() instead of the intended MIN() when computing how many
sectors to view in the current loop iteration of qcow2_measure(),
and passed in a value of INT_MAX sectors instead of our more usual
limit of BDRV_REQUEST_MAX_SECTORS (the latter avoids 32-bit overflow
on conversion to bytes). For small files, the bug is harmless:
bdrv_get_block_status_above() clamps its *pnum answer to the BDS
size, regardless of any insanely larger input request. However, for
any file at least 2T in size, we can very easily end up going into an
infinite loop (the maximum of 0x100000000 sectors and INT_MAX is a
64-bit quantity, which becomes 0 when assigned to int; once nb_sectors
is 0, we never make progress).

This function creates a collection of self-describing refcount
structures (including a new refcount table) at the end of a qcow2 image
file. Optionally, these structures can also describe a number of
additional clusters beyond themselves; this will be important for
preallocated truncation, which will place the data clusters and L2
tables there.
For now, we can use this function to replace the part of
alloc_refcount_block() that grows the refcount table (from which it is
actually derived).

preallocate() is and will be called only from places that do not
otherwise need to lock s->lock: Currently that is qcow2_create2(), as of
a future patch it will be called from qcow2_truncate(), too.

This patch adds two new parameters to the preallocate() function so we
will be able to use it not just for preallocating a new image but also
for preallocated image growth.
The offset parameter allows the caller to specify a virtual offset from
which to start preallocating. For newly created images this is always 0,
but for preallocating growth this will be the old image length.
The new_length parameter specifies the supposed new length of the image
(basically the "end offset" for preallocation). During image truncation,
bdrv_getlength() will return the old image length so we cannot rely on
its return value then.

The refcount metadata size calculation is inaccurate and can produce
numbers that are too small. This is bad because we should calculate a
conservative number - one that is guaranteed to be large enough.
This patch switches the approach to a fixed point calculation because
the existing equation is hard to solve when inaccuracies are taken care
of.

Auto loading bitmaps are bitmaps in Qcow2, with the AUTO flag set. They
are loaded when the image is opened and become BdrvDirtyBitmaps for the
corresponding drive.
Extra data in bitmaps is not supported for now.

Add bitmap extension as specified in docs/specs/qcow2.txt.
For now, just mirror extension header into Qcow2 state and check
constraints. Also, calculate refcounts for qcow2 bitmaps, to not break
qemu-img check.
For now, disable image resize if it has bitmaps. It will be fixed later.

While the crypto layer uses a fixed option name "key-secret",
the upper block layer may have a prefix on the options. e.g.
"encrypt.key-secret", in order to avoid clashes between crypto
option names & other block option names. To ensure the crypto
layer can report accurate error messages, we must tell it what
option name prefix was used.

Now that all encryption keys must be provided upfront via
the QCryptoSecret API and associated block driver properties
there is no need for any explicit encryption handling APIs
in the block layer. Encryption can be handled transparently
within the block driver. We only retain an API for querying
whether an image is encrypted or not, since that is a
potentially useful piece of metadata to report to the user.

This adds support for using LUKS as an encryption format
with the qcow2 file, using the new encrypt.format parameter
to request "luks" format. e.g.
# qemu-img create --object secret,data=123456,id=sec0 \
-f qcow2 -o encrypt.format=luks,encrypt.key-secret=sec0 \

The legacy "encryption=on" parameter still results in
creation of the old qcow2 AES format (and is equivalent
to the new 'encryption-format=aes'). e.g. the following are
equivalent:

-f qcow2 -o encryption=on,encrypt.key-secret=sec0 \
test.qcow2 10G
# qemu-img create --object secret,data=123456,id=sec0 \

With the LUKS format it is necessary to store the LUKS
partition header and key material in the QCow2 file. This
data can be many MB in size, so cannot go into the QCow2
header region directly. Thus the spec defines a FDE
(Full Disk Encryption) header extension that specifies
the offset of a set of clusters to hold the FDE headers,
as well as the length of that region. The LUKS header is
thus stored in these extra allocated clusters before the
main image payload.
Aside from all the cryptographic differences implied by
use of the LUKS format, there is one further key difference
between the use of legacy AES and LUKS encryption in qcow2.
For LUKS, the initialiazation vectors are generated using
the host physical sector as the input, rather than the
guest virtual sector. This guarantees unique initialization
vectors for all sectors when qcow2 internal snapshots are
used, thus giving stronger protection against watermarking
attacks.

This converts the qcow2 driver to make use of the QCryptoBlock
APIs for encrypting image content, using the legacy QCow2 AES
scheme.
With this change it is now required to use the QCryptoSecret
object for providing passwords, instead of the current block
password APIs / interactive prompting.

Historically the qcow & qcow2 image formats supported a property
"encryption=on" to enable their built-in AES encryption. We'll
soon be supporting LUKS for qcow2, so need a more general purpose
way to enable encryption, with a choice of formats.
This introduces an "encrypt.format" option, which will later be
joined by a number of other "encrypt.XXX" options. The use of
a "encrypt." prefix instead of "encrypt-" is done to facilitate
mapping to a nested QAPI schema at later date.
e.g. the preferred syntax is now
qemu-img create -f qcow2 -o encrypt.format=aes demo.qcow2

If the guest tries to write data that results on the allocation of a
new cluster, instead of writing the guest data first and then the data
from the COW regions, write everything together using one single I/O
operation.
This can improve the write performance by 25% or more, depending on
several factors such as the media type, the cluster size and the I/O
request size.

Passing a byte offset, but sector count, when we ultimately
want to operate on cluster granularity, is madness. Clean up
the external interfaces to take both offset and count as bytes,
while still keeping the assertion added previously that the
caller must align the values to a cluster. Then rename things
to make sure backports don't get confused by changed units:
instead of qcow2_discard_clusters() and qcow2_zero_clusters(),
we now have qcow2_cluster_discard() and qcow2_cluster_zeroize().
The internal functions still operate on clusters at a time, and
return an int for number of cleared clusters; but on an image
with 2M clusters, a single L2 table holds 256k entries that each
represent a 2M cluster, totalling well over INT_MAX bytes if we
ever had a request for that many bytes at once. All our callers
currently limit themselves to 32-bit bytes (and therefore fewer
clusters), but by making this function 64-bit clean, we have one
less place to clean up if we later improve the block layer to
support 64-bit bytes through all operations (with the block layer
auto-fragmenting on behalf of more-limited drivers), rather than
the current state where some interfaces are artificially limited
to INT_MAX at a time.

We've already improved discards to operate efficiently on the tail
of an unaligned qcow2 image; it's time to make a similar improvement
to write zeroes. The special case is only valid at the tail
cluster of a file, where we must recognize that any sectors beyond
the image end would implicitly read as zero, and therefore should
not penalize our logic for widening a partial cluster into writing
the whole cluster as zero.
However, note that for now, the special case of end-of-file is only
recognized if there is no backing file, or if the backing file has
the same length; that's because when the backing file is shorter
than the active layer, we don't have code in place to recognize
that reads of a sector unallocated at the top and beyond the backing
end-of-file are implicitly zero. It's not much of a real loss,
because most people don't use images that aren't cluster-aligned,
or where the active layer is a different size than the backing
layer (especially where the difference falls within a single cluster).
Update test 154 to cover the new scenarios, using two images of
intentionally differing length.
While at it, fix the test to gracefully skip when run as
./check -qcow2 -o compat=0.10 154
since the older format lacks zero clusters already required earlier
in the test.

Treat plain zero clusters differently from allocated ones, so that
we can simplify the logic of checking whether an offset is present.
Do this by splitting QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO into two new enums,
QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN and QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOC.
I tried to arrange the enum so that we could use
'ret <= QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN' for all unallocated types, and
'ret >= QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOC' for allocated types, although
I didn't actually end up taking advantage of the layout.
In many cases, this leads to simpler code, by properly combining
cases (sometimes, both zero types pair together, other times,
plain zero is more like unallocated while allocated zero is more
like normal).

As mentioned in commit 0c1bd46, we ignored requests to
discard the trailing cluster of an unaligned image. While
discard is an advisory operation from the guest standpoint,
(and we are therefore free to ignore any request), our
qcow2 implementation exploits the fact that a discarded
cluster reads back as 0. As long as we discard on cluster
boundaries, we are fine; but that means we could observe
non-zero data leaked at the tail of an unaligned image.
Enhance iotest 66 to cover this case, and fix the implementation
to honor a discard request on the final partial cluster.

blk_new_open() is a convenience function that processes flags rather
than QDict options as a simple way to just open an image file.
In order to keep it convenient in the future, it must automatically
request the necessary permissions. This can easily be inferred from the
flags for read and write, but we need another flag that tells us whether
to get the resize permission.
We can't just always request it because that means that no block jobs
can run on the resulting BlockBackend (which is something that e.g.
qemu-img commit wants to do), but we also can't request it never because
most of the .bdrv_create() implementations call blk_truncate().
The solution is to introduce another flag that is passed by all users
that want to resize the image.

We want every user to be specific about the permissions it needs, so
we'll pass the initial permissions as parameters to blk_new(). A user
only needs to call blk_set_perm() if it wants to change the permissions
after the fact.
The permissions are stored in the BlockBackend and applied whenever a
BlockDriverState should be attached in blk_insert_bs().
This does not include actually choosing the right set of permissions
everywhere yet. Instead, the usual FIXME comment is added to each place
and will be addressed in individual patches.

This makes use of the .bdrv_child_perm() implementation for formats that
we just added. All format drivers expose the permissions they actually
need nows, so that they can be set accordingly and updated when parents
are attached or detached.
The only format not included here is raw, which was already converted
with the other filter drivers.

The way that attaching bs->file worked was a bit unusual in that it was
the only child that would be attached to a node which is not opened yet.
Because of this, the block layer couldn't know yet which permissions the
driver would eventually need.
This patch moves the point where bs->file is attached to the beginning
of the individual .bdrv_open() implementations, so drivers already know
what they are going to do with the child. This is also more consistent
with how driver-specific children work.
For a moment, bdrv_open() gets its own BdrvChild to perform image
probing, but instead of directly assigning this BdrvChild to the BDS, it
becomes a temporary one and the node name is passed as an option to the
drivers, so that they can simply use bdrv_open_child() to create another
reference for their own use.
This duplicated child for (the not opened yet) bs is not the final
state, a follow-up patch will change the image probing code to use a
BlockBackend, which is completely independent of bs.

The metadata overlap checks introduced in a40f1c2add help detect
corruption in the qcow2 image by verifying that data writes don't
overlap with existing metadata sections.
The 'refcount-block' check in particular iterates over the refcount
table in order to get the addresses of all refcount blocks and check
that none of them overlap with the region where we want to write.
The problem with the refcount table is that since it always occupies
complete clusters its size is usually very big. With the default
values of cluster_size=64KB and refcount_bits=16 this table holds 8192
entries, each one of them enough to map 2GB worth of host clusters.
So unless we're using images with several TB of allocated data this
table is going to be mostly empty, and iterating over it is a waste of
CPU. If the storage backend is fast enough this can have an effect on
I/O performance.
This patch keeps the index of the last used (i.e. non-zero) entry in
the refcount table and updates it every time the table changes. The
refcount-block overlap check then uses that index instead of reading
the whole table.
In my tests with a 4GB qcow2 file stored in RAM this doubles the
amount of write IOPS.

The qcow2_make_empty() function is reached during 'qemu-img commit',
in order to clear out ALL clusters of an image. However, if the
image cannot use the fast code path (true if the image is format
0.10, or if the image contains a snapshot), the cluster size is
larger than 512, and the image is larger than 2G in size, then our
choice of sector_step causes problems. Since it is not cluster
aligned, but qcow2_discard_clusters() silently ignores an unaligned
head or tail, we are leaving clusters allocated.
Enhance the testsuite to expose the flaw, and patch the problem by
ensuring our step size is aligned.

The cache-clean-interval option of qcow2 only works on Linux. However
we allow setting it in other systems regardless of whether it works or
not.
In those systems this option is not simply a no-op: it actually
invalidates perfectly valid cache tables for no good reason without
freeing their memory.
This patch forbids using that option in non-Linux systems.

Right now, the block layer rounds discard requests, so that
individual drivers are able to assert that discard requests
will never be unaligned. But there are some ISCSI devices
that track and coalesce multiple unaligned requests, turning it
into an actual discard if the requests eventually cover an
entire page, which implies that it is better to always pass
discard requests as low down the stack as possible.
In isolation, this patch has no semantic effect, since the
block layer currently never passes an unaligned request through.
But the block layer already has code that silently ignores
drivers that return -ENOTSUP for a discard request that cannot
be honored (as well as drivers that return 0 even when nothing
was done). But the next patch will update the block layer to
fragment discard requests, so that clients are guaranteed that
they are either dealing with an unaligned head or tail, or an
aligned core, making it similar to the block layer semantics of
write zero fragmentation.

At the qcow2 layer, discard is only possible on a per-cluster
basis; at the moment, qcow2 silently rounds any unaligned
requests to this granularity. However, an upcoming patch will
fix a regression in the block layer ignoring too much of an
unaligned discard request, by changing the block layer to
break up a discard request at alignment boundaries; for that
to work, the block layer must know about our limits.
However, we can't go one step further by changing
qcow2_discard_clusters() to assert that requests are always
aligned, since that helper function is reached on paths
outside of the block layer.

There are no needs to allocate more than one cluster, as we set
avail_out for deflate to one cluster.
Zlib docs (http://www.zlib.net/manual.html) says:
"deflate compresses as much data as possible, and stops when the input
buffer becomes empty or the output buffer becomes full."
So, deflate will not write more than avail_out to output buffer. If
there is not enough space in output buffer for compressed data (it may
be larger than input data) deflate just returns Z_OK. (if all data is
compressed and written to output buffer deflate returns Z_STREAM_END).

In practice the entry argument is always known at creation time, and
it is confusing that sometimes qemu_coroutine_enter is used with a
non-NULL argument to re-enter a coroutine (this happens in
block/sheepdog.c and tests/test-coroutine.c). So pass the opaque value
at creation time, for consistency with e.g. aio_bh_new.

on an image need to actually hold a reference (in the form of BdrvChild,
possible as part of a BlockBackend) to that image. This also protects
against inconsistent use of BlockBackend vs. BlockDriverState functions
because direct use of a BlockDriverState isn't possible any more and
blk->root is private for block-backends.c.
In addition, we can now distinguish different users in the I/O path,
and the future op blockers work is going to add assertions based on
permissions stored in BdrvChild.

We don't really want to go through the block layer in order to read from
or write to the vmstate in a qcow2 image. Doing so required a few ugly
hacks like saving and restoring the old image size (because writing to
vmstate offsets would increase the image size) or disabling the "reads
after EOF = zeroes" logic. When calling the right functions directly,
these hacks aren't necessary any more.
Note that .bdrv_vmstate_load/save() return 0 instead of the number of
bytes in case of success now.

This commit was designed to prevent future coding bugs which
might cause QEMU to read/write data on an encrypted block
device in plain text mode before a decryption key is set.
It turns out this preventative measure was a little too good,

So the safety net is correctly preventing QEMU reading cipher
text as if it were plain text, during startup and aborting QEMU
to avoid bad usage of this data.
For added fun this bug only happens if the encrypted qcow2
file happens to have data written to the first cluster,
otherwise the cluster won't be allocated and so qcow2 would
not try the decryption routines at all, just return all 0's.
That no one even noticed, let alone reported, this bug that
has shipped in 2.4.0, 2.5.0 and 2.6.0 shows that the number
of actual users of encrypted qcow2 is approximately zero.
So rather than fix the crash, and backport it to stable
releases, just go ahead with what we have warned users about
and disable any use of qcow2 encryption in the system
emulators. qemu-img/qemu-io/qemu-nbd are still able to access
qcow2 encrypted images for the sake of data conversion.
In the future, qcow2 will gain support for the alternative
luks format, but when this happens it'll be using the
'-object secret' infrastructure for getting keys, which
avoids this problematic scenario entirely.

This changes qcow2 to implement the byte-based .bdrv_co_pwritev
interface rather than the sector-based old one.
As preallocation uses the same allocation function as normal writes, and
the interface of that function needs to be changed, it is converted in
the same patch.

Reading from qcow2 images is now byte granularity.
Most of the affected code in qcow2 actually gets simpler with this
change. The only exception is encryption, which is fixed on 512 bytes
blocks; in order to keep this working, bs->request_alignment is set for
encrypted images.

The problem with excessive flushing was found by a couple of performance
tests:
- parallel directory tree creation (from 2 processes)
- 32 cached writes + fsync at the end in a loop
For the first one results improved from 2.6 loops/sec to 3.5 loops/sec.
Each loop creates 10^3 directories with 10 files in each.
For the second one results improved from ~600 fsync/sec to ~1100
fsync/sec. Though, it was run on SSD so it probably won't show such
performance gain on rotational media.
qcow2_cache_flush() calls bdrv_flush() unconditionally after writing
cache entries of a particular cache. This can lead to as many as
2 additional fdatasyncs inside bdrv_flush.
We can simply skip all fdatasync calls inside qcow2_co_flush_to_os
as bdrv_flush for sure will do the job. These flushes are necessary to
keep the right order of writes to the different caches. Though this is
not necessary in the current code base as this ordering is ensured through
the flush in qcow2_cache_flush_dependency().

Another step towards removing sector-based interfaces: convert
the maximum write and minimum alignment values from sectors to
bytes. Rename the variables to let the compiler check that all
users are converted to the new semantics.
The maximum remains an int as long as BDRV_REQUEST_MAX_SECTORS
is constrained by INT_MAX (this means that we can't even
support a 2G write_zeroes, but just under it) - changing
operation lengths to unsigned or to 64-bits is a much bigger
audit, and debatable if we even want to do it (since at the
core, a 32-bit platform will still have ssize_t as its
underlying limit on write()).
Meanwhile, alignment is changed to 'uint32_t', since it makes no
sense to have an alignment larger than the maximum write, and
less painful to use an unsigned type with well-defined behavior
in bit operations than to have to worry about what happens if
a driver mistakenly supplies a negative alignment.
Add an assert that no one was trying to use sectors to get a
write zeroes larger than 2G, and therefore that a later conversion
to bytes won't be impacted by keeping the limit at 32 bits.

is_zero_cluster() and is_zero_cluster_top_locked() are used only
by qcow2_co_write_zeroes(). The former is too broad (we don't
care if the sectors we are about to overwrite are non-zero, only
that all other sectors in the cluster are zero), so it needs to
be called up to twice but with smaller limits - rename it along
with adding the neeeded parameter. The latter can be inlined for
more compact code.
The testsuite change shows that we now have a sparser top file
when an unaligned write_zeroes overwrites the only portion of
the backing file with data.

Unaligned requests will occupy only one cluster. This is true since the
previous commit. Simplify the code taking this consideration into
account.
In other words, the caller is now buggy if it ever passes us an unaligned
request that crosses cluster boundaries (the only requests that can cross
boundaries will be aligned).
There are no other changes so far.

We should check for (res & BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO) only. The situation when we
will have !(res & BDRV_BLOCK_DATA) and will not have BDRV_BLOCK_ZERO is
not possible for images with bdi.unallocated_blocks_are_zero == true.
For those images where it's false, however, it can happen and we must
not consider the data zeroed then or we would corrupt the image.

There is a possibility that qcow2_co_write_zeroes() will be called
with the partial block. This could be synthetically triggered with
qemu-io -c "write -z 32k 4k"
and can happen in the real life in qemu-nbd. The latter happens under
the following conditions:
(1) qemu-nbd is started with --detect-zeroes=on and is connected to the
kernel NBD client
(2) third party program opens kernel NBD device with O_DIRECT
(3) third party program performs write operation with memory buffer
not aligned to the page
In this case qcow2_co_write_zeroes() is unable to perform the operation
and mark entire cluster as zeroed and returns ENOTSUP. Thus the caller
switches to non-optimized version and writes real zeroes to the disk.
The patch creates a shortcut. If the block is read as zeroes, f.e. if
it is unallocated, the request is extended to cover full block.
User-visible situation with this block is not changed. Before the patch
the block is filled in the image with real zeroes. After that patch the
block is marked as zeroed in metadata. Thus any subsequent changes in
backing store chain are not affected.

We have several block drivers that understand BDRV_REQ_FUA,
and emulate it in the block layer for the rest by a full flush.
But without a way to actually request BDRV_REQ_FUA during a
pass-through blk_pwrite(), FUA-aware block drivers like NBD are
forced to repeat the emulation logic of a full flush regardless
of whether the backend they are writing to could do it more
efficiently.
This patch just wires up a flags argument; followup patches
will actually make use of it in the NBD driver and in qemu-io.

All callers of blk_new_open() either don't rely on the WCE bit set after
blk_new_open() because they explicitly set it anyway, or they pass
BDRV_O_CACHE_WB unconditionally.
This patch changes blk_new_open() so that it always enables writeback
mode and asserts that BDRV_O_CACHE_WB is clear. For those callers that
used to pass BDRV_O_CACHE_WB unconditionally, the flag is removed now.

For a couple of releases we have been warning
Encrypted images are deprecated
Support for them will be removed in a future release.
You can use 'qemu-img convert' to convert your image to an unencrypted one.
This warning was issued by system emulators, qemu-img, qemu-nbd
and qemu-io. Such a broad warning was issued because the original
intention was to rip out all the code for dealing with encryption
inside the QEMU block layer APIs.
The new block encryption framework used for the LUKS driver does
not rely on the unloved block layer API for encryption keys,
instead using the QOM 'secret' object type. It is thus no longer
appropriate to warn about encryption unconditionally.
When the qcow/qcow2 drivers are converted to use the new encryption
framework too, it will be practical to keep AES-CBC support present
for use in qemu-img, qemu-io & qemu-nbd to allow for interoperability
with older QEMU versions and liberation of data from existing encrypted
qcow2 files.
This change moves the warning out of the generic block code and
into the qcow/qcow2 drivers. Further, the warning is set to only
appear when running the system emulators, since qemu-img, qemu-io,
qemu-nbd are expected to support qcow2 encryption long term now that
the maint burden has been eliminated.

Simple unions were carrying a special case that hid their 'data'
QMP member from the resulting C struct, via the hack method
QAPISchemaObjectTypeVariant.simple_union_type(). But by using
the work we started by unboxing flat union and alternate
branches, coupled with the ability to visit the members of an
implicit type, we can now expose the simple union's implicit
type in qapi-types.h:

Doing this removes asymmetry between QAPI's QMP side and its
C side (both sides now expose 'data'), and means that the
treatment of a simple union as sugar for a flat union is now
equivalent in both languages (previously the two approaches used
a different layer of dereferencing, where the simple union could
be converted to a flat union with equivalent C layout but
different {} on the wire, or to an equivalent QMP wire form
but with different C representation). Using the implicit type
also lets us get rid of the simple_union_type() hack.
Of course, now all clients of simple unions have to adjust from
using su->u.member to using su->u.member.data; while this touches
a number of files in the tree, some earlier cleanup patches
helped minimize the change to the initialization of a temporary
variable rather than every single member access. The generated
qapi-visit.c code is also affected by the layout change:

Before this patch, blk_new() automatically assigned a name to the new
BlockBackend and considered it referenced by the monitor. This patch
removes the implicit monitor_add_blk() call from blk_new() (and
consequently the monitor_remove_blk() call from blk_delete(), too) and
thus blk_new() (and related functions) no longer take a BB name
argument.
In fact, there is only a single point where blk_new()/blk_new_open() is
called and the new BB is monitor-owned, and that is in blockdev_init().
Besides thus relieving us from having to invent names for all of the BBs
we use in qemu-img, this fixes a bug where qemu cannot create a new
image if there already is a monitor-owned BB named "image".
If a BB and its BDS tree are created in a single operation, as of this
patch the BDS tree will be created before the BB is given a name
(whereas it was the other way around before). This results in minor
change to the output of iotest 087, whose reference output is amended
accordingly.

Just specifying a custom string is simpler in basically all places that
used it, and in addition, specifying the BB or node name is something we
generally do not do in other error messages when opening a BDS, so we
should not do it here.
This changes the output for iotest 036 (to the better, in my opinion),
so the reference output needs to be changed accordingly.

The added parameter can be used to return the BDS pointer which the
valid offset is referring to. Its value should be ignored unless
BDRV_BLOCK_OFFSET_VALID in ret is set.
Until block drivers fill in the right value, let's clear it explicitly
right before calling .bdrv_get_block_status.
The "bs->file" condition in bdrv_co_get_block_status is kept now to keep iotest
case 102 passing, and will be fixed once all drivers return the right file
pointer.

If qcow2_invalidate_cache() fails, we are in a state where qcow2_close()
has already been completed, but the image hasn't been reopened yet.
Calling into any qcow2 function for an image in this state will cause
crashes.
The real solution would be to get rid of the close/open pair and instead
do an atomic reset of the involved data structures, but this isn't
trivial, so let's just make the image inaccessible for now.

What qcow2_invalidate_cache() should do is close the image with
BDRV_O_INACTIVE set and reopen it with the flag cleared. In fact, it
used to do exactly the opposite: qcow2_close() relied on bs->open_flags,
which is already updated to have cleared BDRV_O_INACTIVE at this point,
whereas qcow2_open() was called with s->flags, which has the flag still
set. Fix this.

The callback has to ensure that closing or flushing the image afterwards
wouldn't cause a write access to the image files. This means that just
the caches have to be written out, which is part of the existing
.bdrv_close implementation.

Instead of covering only the state of images on the migration
destination before the migration is completed, the flag will also cover
the state of images on the migration source after completion. This
common state implies that the image is technically still open, but no
writes will happen and any cached contents will be reloaded from disk if
and when the image leaves this state.

When creating a qcow2 image, we didn't necessarily call
qcow2_update_header(), but could end up with the basic header that
qcow2_create2() created manually. One thing that this basic header
lacks is the feature table. Let's make sure that it's always present.
This requires a few updates to test cases as well.

qcow2 accepts a few driver-specific options that overlap semantically
(e.g. "overlap-check" is an alias of "overlap-check.template", and any
missing cache size option is derived from the given ones).
When bdrv_reopen() merges the set of updated options with left out
options that should be kept at their old value, we need to consider this
and filter out any duplicates (which would generally cause errors
because new and old value would contradict each other).
This patch adds a .bdrv_join_options callback to BlockDriver and
implements it for qcow2.

Now that we guarantee the user doesn't have any enum values
beginning with a single underscore, we can use that for our
own purposes. Renaming ENUM_MAX to ENUM__MAX makes it obvious
that the sentinel is generated.

We have two issues with our qapi union layout:
1) Even though the QMP wire format spells the tag 'type', the
C code spells it 'kind', requiring some hacks in the generator.
2) The C struct uses an anonymous union, which places all tag
values in the same namespace as all non-variant members. This
leads to spurious collisions if a tag value matches a non-variant
member's name.
Make the conversion to the new layout for block-related code.

This is the final step in converting all of the BlockDriverState
pointers that block drivers use to BdrvChild.
After this patch, bs->children contains the full list of child nodes
that are referenced by a given BDS, and these children are only
referenced through BdrvChild, so that updating the pointer in there is
enough for changing edges in the graph.

For updating the cache sizes, disabling lazy refcounts and updating the
clean_cache_timer there is a bit more to do than just changing the
variables, but otherwise we're all set for changing options during
bdrv_reopen().
Just implement the missing pieces and hook the functions up in
bdrv_reopen().

This adds a new 'cache-clean-interval' option that cleans all qcow2
cache entries that haven't been used in a certain interval, given in
seconds.
This allows setting a large L2 cache size so it can handle scenarios
with lots of I/O and at the same time use little memory during periods
of inactivity.
This feature currently relies on MADV_DONTNEED to free that memory, so
it is not useful in systems that don't follow that behavior.

These macros expand into error class enumeration constant, comma,
string. Unclean. Has been that way since commit 13f59ae.
The error class is always ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR since the previous
commit.
Clean up as follows:
* Prepend every use of a QERR_ macro by ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, and
delete it from the QERR_ macro. No change after preprocessing.
* Rewrite error_set(ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, ...) into
error_setg(...). Again, no change after preprocessing.

If a relatively large cluster size is chosen, the default of 1 MB L2
cache is not really appropriate. In this case, unless overridden by the
user, the default cache size should not be determined by its size in
bytes but by the number of L2 tables (clusters) it is supposed to
contain.
Note that without this patch, MIN_L2_CACHE_SIZE will effectively take
over the same role. However, providing space for just two L2 tables is
not enough to be the default.

When a qcow[2] file is opened, if the header reports an
encryption method, this is used to set the 'crypt_method_header'
field on the BDRVQcow[2]State struct, and the 'encrypted' flag
in the BDRVState struct.
When doing I/O operations, the 'crypt_method' field on the
BDRVQcow[2]State struct is checked to determine if encryption
needs to be applied.
The crypt_method_header value is copied into crypt_method when
the bdrv_set_key() method is called.
The QEMU code which opens a block device is expected to always
do a check
if (bdrv_is_encrypted(bs)) {
bdrv_set_key(bs, ....key...);
}
If code forgets to do this, then 'crypt_method' is never set
and so when I/O is performed, QEMU writes plain text data
into a sector which is expected to contain cipher text, or
when reading, will return cipher text instead of plain
text.
Change the qcow[2] code to consult bs->encrypted when deciding
whether encryption is required, and assert(s->crypt_method)
to protect against cases where the caller forgets to set the
encryption key.
Also put an assert in the set_key methods to protect against
the case where the caller sets an encryption key on a block
device that does not have encryption

There are several error messages that identify a BlockDriverState by
its device name. However those errors can be produced in nodes that
don't have a device name associated.
In those cases we should use bdrv_get_device_or_node_name() to fall
back to the node name and produce a more meaningful message. The
messages are also updated to use the more generic term 'node' instead
of 'device'.

In recent qemu versions, it is possible to override the backing file
name and format that is stored in the image file with values given at
runtime. In such cases, the temporary override could end up in the
image header if the qcow2 header was updated, while obviously correct
behaviour would be to leave the on-disk backing file path/format
unchanged.
Fix this and add a test case for it.

Add a refcount_order parameter to qcow2_create2(), use that value for
the image header and for calculating the size required for
preallocation.
For now, always pass 4.
This addition requires changes to the calculation of the file size for
the "full" and "falloc" preallocation modes. That in turn is a nice
opportunity to add a comment about that calculation not necessarily

Add the bit width of every refcount entry to the format-specific
information.
In contrast to lazy_refcounts and the corrupt flag, this should be
always emitted, even for compat=0.10 although it does not support any
refcount width other than 16 bits. This is because if a boolean is
optional, one normally assumes it to be false when omitted; but if an
integer is not specified, it is rather difficult to guess its value.
This new field breaks some test outputs, fix them.

qemu_opt_set() is a wrapper around qemu_opt_set() that reports the
error with qerror_report_err().
Most of its users assume the function can't fail. Make them use
qemu_opt_set_err() with &error_abort, so that should the assumption
ever break, it'll break noisily.
Just two users remain, in util/qemu-config.c. Switch them to
qemu_opt_set_err() as well, then rename qemu_opt_set_err() to
qemu_opt_set().

Return the Error object instead of reporting it with
qerror_report_err().
Change callers that assume the function can't fail to pass
&error_abort, so that should the assumption ever break, it'll break
noisily.
Turns out all callers outside its unit test assume that. We could
drop the Error ** argument, but that would make the interface less
regular, so don't.

as being "growable" (that is, they are allowed to grow; they are not

This fixes an off-by-one error introduced in 9a29e18. Both qcow and
qcow2 need to make sure to leave room for string terminator '\0' for
the backing file, so the max length of the non-terminated string is
either 1023 or PATH_MAX - 1.

The string field entries 'filename', 'backing_file', and
'exact_filename' in the BlockDriverState struct are defined as 1024
bytes.
However, many places that use these values accept a maximum of PATH_MAX
bytes, so we have a mixture of 1024 byte and PATH_MAX byte allocations.
This patch makes the BlockDriverStruct field string sizes match usage.
This patch also does a few fixes related to the size that needs to
happen now:
* the block qapi driver is updated to use PATH_MAX bytes
* the qcow and qcow2 drivers have an additional safety check
* the block vvfat driver is updated to use PATH_MAX bytes
for the size of backing_file, for systems where PATH_MAX is < 1024
bytes.
* qemu-img uses PATH_MAX rather than 1024. These instances were not
changed to be dynamically allocated, however, as the extra
temporary 3K in stack usage for qemu-img does not seem worrisome.

qcow2_cache_flush() may fail; if one of the caches failed to be flushed
successfully to disk in qcow2_close() the image should not be marked
clean, and we should emit a warning.
This breaks the (qcow2-specific) iotests 026, 071 and 089; change their
output accordingly.

There are some block drivers which are essential to QEMU and may not be
removed: These are raw, file and qcow2 (as the default non-raw format).
Make their BlockDriver objects public so they can be directly referenced
throughout the block layer without needing to call bdrv_find_format()
and having to deal with an error at runtime, while the real problem
occurred during linking (where raw, file or qcow2 were not linked into
qemu).

After reading the extension header, offset is incremented, but not
checked against end_offset any more. This way an integer overflow could
happen when checking whether the extension end is within the allowed
range, effectively disabling the check.
This patch adds the missing check and a test case for it.

The only really time-consuming operation potentially performed by
qcow2_amend_options() is zero cluster expansion when downgrading qcow2
images from compat=1.1 to compat=0.10, so report status of that
operation and that operation only through the status CB.
For this, approximate the progress as the number of L1 entries visited
during the operation.

Depending on the changed options and the image format,
bdrv_amend_options() may take a significant amount of time. In these
cases, a way to be informed about the operation's status is desirable.
Since the operation is rather complex and may fundamentally change the
image, implementing it as AIO or a coroutine does not seem feasible. On
the other hand, implementing it as a block job would be significantly
more difficult than a simple callback and would not add benefits other
than progress report to the amending operation, because it should not
actually be run as a block job at all.
A callback may not be very pretty, but it's very easy to implement and
perfectly fits its purpose here.

bdrv_make_empty() is currently only called if the current image
represents an external snapshot that has been committed to its base
image; it is therefore unlikely to have internal snapshots. In this
case, bdrv_make_empty() can be greatly sped up by emptying the L1 and
refcount table (while having the dirty flag set, which only works for
compat=1.1) and creating a trivial refcount structure.
If there are snapshots or for compat=0.10, fall back to the simple
implementation (discard all clusters).

Normally, discarded sectors should read back as zero. However, there are
cases in which a sector (or rather cluster) should be discarded as if
they were never written in the first place, that is, reading them should
fall through to the backing file again.

device_name[] can become non-empty only in bdrv_new_root() and
bdrv_move_feature_fields(). The latter is used only to undo damage
done by bdrv_swap(). The former is called only by blk_new_with_bs().
Therefore, when a BlockDriverState's device_name[] is non-empty, then
it's been created with a BlockBackend, and vice versa. Furthermore,
blk_new_with_bs() keeps the two names equal.
Therefore, device_name[] is redundant. Eliminate it.

Being able to set the overlap-check option to a string and then refine
it via the overlap-check.* options is a nice idea for the command line
but does not work so well for non-flattened dicts. In that case, one can
only specify either but not both, so add a field to overlap-check.*
which does the same as directly specifying overlap-check but can be used
in conjunction with the other fields in non-flattened dicts.

Currently the file size requested by user is rounded down to nearest
sector, causing the actual file size could be a bit less than the size
user requested. Since some formats (like qcow2) record virtual disk
size in bytes, this can make the last few bytes cannot be accessed.
This patch fixes it by rounding up file size to nearest sector so that
the actual file size is no less than the requested file size.

Specifying the metadata cache sizes in clusters results in less clusters
(and much less bytes) covered for small cluster sizes and vice versa.
Using a constant byte size reduces this difference, and makes it
possible to manually specify the cache size in an easily comprehensible
unit.

Some code in the block layer makes potentially huge allocations. Failure
is not completely unexpected there, so avoid aborting qemu and handle
out-of-memory situations gracefully.

qcow2's report_unsupported_feature() had two bugs: A 32 bit truncation
would prevent feature table entries for bits 32-63 from being used, and
it could assign errp multiple times if there was more than one unknown
feature, resulting in an error_set() assertion failure.
Fix the truncation, make sure to set the error exactly once and add a
qemu-iotests case for it.

If a qcow2 image has a shorter backing file and a read request to
unallocated clusters goes across EOF of the backing file, the backing
file sees a shortened request and the rest is filled with zeros.
However, the original too long qiov was used with the shortened request.
This patch makes the qiov size match the request size, avoiding a
potential buffer overflow in raw-posix.

Since we parse backing.* options to add a backing file from the command
line when the driver didn't assign one, it has been possible to have a
backing file for e.g. raw images (it just was never accessed).

If lazy refcounts are enabled for a backing file, committing to this
backing file may leave it in a dirty state even if the commit succeeds.
The reason is that the bdrv_flush() call in bdrv_commit() doesn't flush
refcount updates with lazy refcounts enabled, and qcow2_reopen_prepare()
doesn't take care to flush metadata.
In order to fix this, this patch also fixes qcow2_mark_clean(), which
contains another ineffective bdrv_flush() call beause lazy refcounts are
disabled only afterwards. All existing callers of qcow2_mark_clean()
either don't modify refcounts or already flush manually, so that this
fixes only a latent, but not yet actually triggerable bug.
Another instance of the same problem is live snapshots. Again, a real
corruption is prevented by an explicit flush for non-read-only images in
external_snapshot_prepare(), but images using lazy refcounts stay dirty.

preallocate() only links the first QCowL2Meta's data clusters into the
L2 table and ignores any chained QCowL2Metas in the linked list.
Chains of QCowL2Meta structs are built up when contiguous clusters span
L2 tables. Each QCowL2Meta describes one L2 table update. This is a
rare case in preallocate() but can happen.
This patch fixes preallocate() by iterating over the whole list of
QCowL2Metas. Compare with the qcow2_co_writev() function's
implementation, which is similar but also also handles request
dependencies. preallocate() only performs one allocation at a time so
there can be no dependencies.

The qcow2 code assumes that s->snapshots is non-NULL if s->nb_snapshots
!= 0. By having the initialisation of both fields separated in
qcow2_open(), any error occuring in between would cause the error path
to dereference NULL in qcow2_free_snapshots() if the image had any
snapshots.

free_cluster_index is only correct if update_refcount() was called from
an allocation function, and even there it's brittle because it's used to
protect unfinished allocations which still have a refcount of 0 - if it
moves in the wrong place, the unfinished allocation can be corrupted.
So not using it any more seems to be a good idea. Instead, use the
first requested cluster to do the calculations. Return -EAGAIN if
unfinished allocations could become invalid and let the caller restart
its search for some free clusters.
The context of creating a snapsnot is one situation where
update_refcount() is called outside of a cluster allocation. For this
case, the change fixes a buffer overflow if a cluster is referenced in
an L2 table that cannot be represented by an existing refcount block.
(new_table[refcount_table_index] was out of bounds)

len could become negative and would pass the check then. Nothing bad
happened because bdrv_pread() happens to return an error for negative
length values, but make variables for sizes unsigned anyway.
This patch also changes the behaviour to error out on invalid lengths
instead of silently truncating it to 1023.

The end of the refcount table must not exceed INT64_MAX so that integer
overflows are avoided.
Also check for misaligned refcount table. Such images are invalid and
probably the result of data corruption. Error out to avoid further
corruption.

Limit the in-memory reference count table size to 8 MB, it's enough in
practice. This fixes an unbounded allocation as well as a buffer

Header, header extension and the backing file name must all be stored in
the first cluster. Setting the backing file to a much higher value
allowed header extensions to become much bigger than we want them to be
(unbounded allocation).

qcow2_open() causes writes when repairing an image with the dirty flag
set and when clearing autoclear flags. It shouldn't do this when another
qemu instance is still actively working on this image file.
One effect of the bug is that images may have a cleared dirty flag while
the migration source host still has it in use with lazy refcounts
enabled, so refcounts are not accurate and the dirty flag must remain
set.

Instead of manually building a list of all options from BDRVQcowState
values just reuse the options that were used to open the image.
qcow2_open() won't fully use all of the options in the QDict, but that's
okay.
This fixes all of the driver-specific options in qcow2, except for
lazy-refcounts, which was special cased before.

After migration has completed, we call bdrv_invalidate_cache() so that
drivers which cache some data drop their stale copy of the data and
reread it from the image file to get a new version of data that the
source modified while the migration was running.
Reloading metadata from the image file is useless, though, if the size
of the image file stays stale (this is a value that is cached for all
image formats in block.c). Reads from (meta)data after the old EOF
return only zeroes, causing image corruption.
We need to update bs->total_sectors in all layers that could potentially
have changed their size (i.e. backing files are not a concern - if they
are changed, we're in bigger trouble)

header is a bit weird. Improve the error by mentioning what format

Add the bdrv_open() option BDRV_O_PROTOCOL which results in passing the
call to bdrv_file_open(). Additionally, make bdrv_file_open() static and
therefore bdrv_open() the only way to call it.
Consequently, all existing calls to bdrv_file_open() have to be adjusted
to use bdrv_open() with the BDRV_O_PROTOCOL flag instead.

Make bdrv_open() take a pointer to a BDS pointer, similarly to
bdrv_file_open(). If a pointer to a NULL pointer is given, bdrv_open()
will create a new BDS with an empty name; if the BDS pointer is not
NULL, that existing BDS will be reused (in the same way as bdrv_open()
already did).

error_is_set(&var) is the same as var != NULL, but it takes
whole-program analysis to figure that out. Unnecessarily hard for
optimizers, static checkers, and human readers. Dumb it down to
obvious.
Gets rid of several dozen Coverity false positives.
Note that the obvious form is already used in many places.

In the case of a metadata preallocation with a large cluster size,
qcow2_alloc_cluster_offset() can allocate nothing and returns a
NULL l2meta. This patch checks for it and link2 l2 with only valid
l2meta.
Replace 9 and 512 with BDRV_SECTOR_BITS, BDRV_SECTOR_SIZE
respectively while at the function.

n_start can be actually calculated from offset. The number of
sectors to be allocated(n_end - n_start) can be passed in in
num. By removing n_start and n_end, we can save two parameters.
The side effect is there is a bug in qcow2.c:preallocate() that
passes incorrect n_start to qcow2_alloc_cluster_offset() is
fixed. The bug can be triggerred by a larger cluster size than
the default value(65536), for example:
./qemu-img create -f qcow2 \
-o 'cluster_size=131072,preallocation=metadata' file.img 4G

The QCOW2 .bdrv_make_empty implementation always returns 0 for success,
but does not actually do anything.
The proper way to not support an optional driver function stub is to
just not implement it, so let's remove the stub.

This is a boiler-plate _nofail variant of qemu_opts_create. Remove and
use error_abort in call sites.
null/0 arguments needs to be added for the id and fail_if_exists fields
in affected callsites due to argument inconsistency between the normal and
no_fail variants.

Strictly speaking, this is only required for has_zero_init() == false,
but it's easy enough to just do a cluster-aligned write that is padded
with zeros after the header.
This fixes that after 'qemu-img create' header extensions are attempted
to be parsed that are really just random leftover data.

Opening the qcow2 image with BDRV_O_NO_FLUSH prevents any flushes during
the image creation. This means that the image has not yet been flushed
to disk when qemu-img create exits. This flush is delayed until the next
operation on the image involving opening it without BDRV_O_NO_FLUSH and
closing (or directly flushing) it. For large images and/or images with a
small cluster size and preallocated metadata, this flush may take a
significant amount of time and may occur unexpectedly.
Reopening the image without BDRV_O_NO_FLUSH right before the end of
qcow2_create2() results in hoisting the potentially costly flush into
the image creation, which is expected to take some time (whereas
successive image operations may be not).

Saving the VM state is done using bdrv_pwrite. This function may perform
a read-modify-write, which in this case results in data being read from
beyond the end of the virtual disk. Since we are actually trying to
access an area which is not a part of the virtual disk, zero_beyond_eof
has to be set to false before performing the partial write, otherwise
the VM state may become corrupted.

Since df2a6f29a5, bdrv_co_do_writev increases the total_sectors value of
a growable block devices on writes after the current end. This leads to
the virtual disk apparently growing in qcow2_save_vmstate, which in turn
affects the disk size captured by the internal snapshot taken directly
afterwards through e.g. the HMP savevm command. Such a "grown" snapshot
cannot be loaded after reopening the qcow2 image, since its disk size
differs from the actual virtual disk size (writing a VM state does not
actually increase the virtual disk size).
Fix this by restoring total_sectors at the end of qcow2_save_vmstate.

In qcow2_write_compressed, if the compression fails, a normal cluster is
written to disk. This is done through bdrv_write on the qcow2 BDS
itself (using the guest offset), thus it is wrong to do a metadata
overlap check before.

Add a new ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 type as a subtype of ImageInfoSpecific.
This contains the compatibility level as a string and an optional
lazy_refcounts boolean (optional means mandatory for compat >= 1.1 and
not available for compat == 0.10).
Also, add qcow2_get_specific_info, which returns this information.
