716df21707 block: Accept device model name for x-blockdev-insert-medium
In order to remove the need for BlockBackend names in the external API,
we want to allow qdev device names in all device related commands.

This converts x-blockdev-insert-medium to accept a qdev device name.

As the command is experimental, we can still remove the 'device' option
that uses the BlockBackend name. This requires some test case changes
and is left for another series.

f87a0e29a9 block: Add "read-only" to the options QDict
This adds the "read-only" option to the QDict. One important effect of
this change is that when a child inherits options from its parent, the
existing "read-only" mode can be preserved if it was explicitly set
previously.

This addresses scenarios like this:

   [E] <- [D] <- [C] <- [B] <- [A]

In this case, if we reopen [D] with read-only=off, and later reopen
[B], then [D] will not inherit read-only=on from its parent during the
bdrv_reopen_queue_child() stage.

The BDRV_O_RDWR flag is not removed yet, but its keep in sync with the
value of the "read-only" option.

13b9414b57 drive-backup: added support for data compression
The idea is simple - backup is "written-once" data. It is written block
by block and it is large enough. It would be nice to save storage
space and compress it.

The patch adds a flag to the qmp/hmp drive-backup command which enables
block compression. Compression should be implemented in the format driver
to enable this feature.

There are some limitations of the format driver to allow compressed writes.
We can write data only once. Though for backup this is perfectly fine.
These limitations are maintained by the driver and the error will be
reported if we are doing something wrong.

ff356ee4da blockdev: Fix regression with the default naming of throttling groups
When I/O limits are set for a block device, the name of the throttling
group is taken from the BlockBackend if the user doesn't specify one.

Commit efaa7c4eeb moved the naming of the BlockBackend in
blockdev_init() to the end of the function, after I/O limits are set.
The consequence is that the throttling group gets an empty name.

3ddf3efefa block: Use block_job_get() in find_block_job()
find_block_job() looks for a block backend with a specified name,
checks whether it has a block job and acquires its AioContext.

We want to identify jobs by their ID and not by the block backend
they're attached to, so this patch ignores the backends altogether and
gets the job directly. Apart from making the code simpler, this will
allow us to find block jobs once they start having user-specified IDs.

To ensure backward compatibility we keep ERROR_CLASS_DEVICE_NOT_ACTIVE
as the error class if the job doesn't exist. In subsequent patches
we'll also need to keep the device name as the default job ID if the
user doesn't specify a different one.

3b098d5697 qapi: Add new visit_complete() function
Making each output visitor provide its own output collection
function was the only remaining reason for exposing visitor
sub-types to the rest of the code base. Add a polymorphic
visit_complete() function which is a no-op for input visitors,
and which populates an opaque pointer for output visitors. For
maximum type-safety, also add a parameter to the output visitor
constructors with a type-correct version of the output pointer,
and assert that the two uses match.

This approach was considered superior to either passing the
output parameter only during construction (action at a distance
during visit_free() feels awkward) or only during visit_complete()
(defeating type safety makes it easier to use incorrectly).

Most callers were function-local, and therefore a mechanical
conversion; the testsuite was a bit trickier, but the previous
cleanup patch minimized the churn here.

The visit_complete() function may be called at most once; doing
so lets us use transfer semantics rather than duplication or
ref-count semantics to get the just-built output back to the
caller, even though it means our behavior is not idempotent.

Generated code is simplified as follows for events:

274fccee2b block/mirror: Fix target backing BDS
Currently, we are trying to move the backing BDS from the source to the
target in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() which is called from
mirror_exit(). However, mirror_complete() already tries to open the
target's backing chain with a call to bdrv_open_backing_file().

First, we should only set the target's backing BDS once. Second, the
mirroring block job has a better idea of what to set it to than the
generic code in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() (in fact, the latter's
conditions on when to move the backing BDS from source to target are not
really correct).

Therefore, remove that code from bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() and
leave it to mirror_complete().

Depending on what kind of mirroring is performed, we furthermore want to
use different strategies to open the target's backing chain:

- If blockdev-mirror is used, we can assume the user made sure that the
  target already has the correct backing chain. In particular, we should
  not try to open a backing file if the target does not have any yet.

- If drive-mirror with mode=absolute-paths is used, we can and should
  reuse the already existing chain of nodes that the source BDS is in.
  In case of sync=full, no backing BDS is required; with sync=top, we
  just link the source's backing BDS to the target, and with sync=none,
  we use the source BDS as the target's backing BDS.
  We should not try to open these backing files anew because this would
  lead to two BDSs existing per physical file in the backing chain, and
  we would like to avoid such concurrent access.

- If drive-mirror with mode=existing is used, we have to use the
  information provided in the physical image file which means opening
  the target's backing chain completely anew, just as it has been done
  already.
  If the target's backing chain shares images with the source, this may
  lead to multiple BDSs per physical image file. But since we cannot
  reliably ascertain this case, there is nothing we can do about it.

We had to forbid mirroring to a target BDS that already had a BB

76b223200e block: Forbid I/O throttling on nodes with multiple parents for 2.6
As the patches to move I/O throttling to BlockBackend didn't make it in
time for the 2.6 release, but the release adds new ways of configuring
VMs whose behaviour would change once the move is done, we need to
outlaw such configurations temporarily.

The problem exists whenever a BDS has more users than just its BB, for
example it is used as a backing file for another node. (This wasn't
possible in 2.5 yet as we introduced node references to specify a
backing file only recently.) In these cases, the throttling would
apply to these other users now, but after moving throttling to the
BlockBackend the other users wouldn't be throttled any more.

This patch prevents making new references to a throttled node as well as
using monitor commands to throttle a node with multiple parents.

Compared to 2.5 this changes behaviour in some corner cases where
references were allowed before, like bs->file or Quorum children. It
seems reasonable to assume that users didn't use I/O throttling on such
low level nodes. With the upcoming move of throttling into BlockBackend,
such configurations won't be possible anyway.

61de4c6808 block: Remove BDRV_O_CACHE_WB
The previous patches have successively made blk->enable_write_cache the
true source for the information whether a writethrough mode must be
implemented. The corresponding BDRV_O_CACHE_WB is only useless baggage
we're carrying around, so now's the time to remove it.

At the same time, we remove the 'cache.writeback' option parsing on the
BDS level as the only effect was setting the BDRV_O_CACHE_WB flag.

This change requires test cases that explicitly enabled the option to
drop it. Other than that and the change of the error message when
writethrough is enabled on the BDS level (from "Can't set writethrough

73ac451f34 block: Reject writethrough mode except at the root
Writethrough mode is going to become a BlockBackend feature rather than
a BDS one, so forbid it in places where we won't be able to support it
when the code finally matches the envisioned design.

We only allowed setting the cache mode of non-root nodes after the 2.5
release, so we're still free to make this change.

The target of block jobs is now always opened in a writeback mode
because it doesn't have a BlockBackend attached. This makes more sense
anyway because block jobs know when to flush. If the graph is modified

4c8449832c block: Remove copy-on-read from bdrv_move_feature_fields()
Ever since we first introduced bdrv_append() in commit 8802d1fd ('qapi:
Introduce blockdev-group-snapshot-sync command'), the copy-on-read flag
was moved to the new top layer when taking a snapshot. The only problem
is that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

The use case for manually enabled CoR is to avoid reading data twice
from a slow remote image, so we want to save it to a local overlay, say
an ISO image accessed via HTTP to a local qcow2 overlay. When taking a
snapshot, we end up with a backing chain like this:

    http <- local.qcow2 <- snap_overlay.qcow2

There is no point in doing CoR from local.qcow2 into snap_overlay.qcow2,
we just want to keep copying data from the remote source into
local.qcow2.

The other use case of CoR is in the context of streaming, which isn't
very interesting for bdrv_move_feature_fields() because op blockers
prevent this combination.

This patch makes the copy-on-read flag stay on the image for which it
was originally set and prevents it from being propagated to the new
overlay. It is no longer intended to move CoR to the BlockBackend level.
In order for this to make sense, we also need to keep the respective
image read-write.

As a side effect of these changes, creating a live snapshot image (as
opposed to using an existing externally created one) on top of a COR
block device works now. It used to fail because it tried to open its
backing file both read-only and with COR.

32bafa8fdd qapi: Don't special-case simple union wrappers
Simple unions were carrying a special case that hid their 'data'
QMP member from the resulting C struct, via the hack method
QAPISchemaObjectTypeVariant.simple_union_type().  But by using
the work we started by unboxing flat union and alternate
branches, coupled with the ability to visit the members of an
implicit type, we can now expose the simple union's implicit
type in qapi-types.h:

| struct q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificQCow2_wrapper {
|     ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 *data;
| };
|
| struct q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificVmdk_wrapper {
|     ImageInfoSpecificVmdk *data;
| };
...
| struct ImageInfoSpecific {
|     ImageInfoSpecificKind type;
|     union { /* union tag is @type */
|         void *data;
|-        ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 *qcow2;
|-        ImageInfoSpecificVmdk *vmdk;
|+        q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificQCow2_wrapper qcow2;
|+        q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificVmdk_wrapper vmdk;
|     } u;
| };

Doing this removes asymmetry between QAPI's QMP side and its
C side (both sides now expose 'data'), and means that the
treatment of a simple union as sugar for a flat union is now
equivalent in both languages (previously the two approaches used
a different layer of dereferencing, where the simple union could
be converted to a flat union with equivalent C layout but
different {} on the wire, or to an equivalent QMP wire form
but with different C representation). Using the implicit type
also lets us get rid of the simple_union_type() hack.

Of course, now all clients of simple unions have to adjust from
using su->u.member to using su->u.member.data; while this touches
a number of files in the tree, some earlier cleanup patches
helped minimize the change to the initialization of a temporary
variable rather than every single member access. The generated
qapi-visit.c code is also affected by the layout change:

efaa7c4eeb blockdev: Split monitor reference from BB creation
Before this patch, blk_new() automatically assigned a name to the new
BlockBackend and considered it referenced by the monitor. This patch
removes the implicit monitor_add_blk() call from blk_new() (and
consequently the monitor_remove_blk() call from blk_delete(), too) and
thus blk_new() (and related functions) no longer take a BB name
argument.

In fact, there is only a single point where blk_new()/blk_new_open() is
called and the new BB is monitor-owned, and that is in blockdev_init().
Besides thus relieving us from having to invent names for all of the BBs
we use in qemu-img, this fixes a bug where qemu cannot create a new
image if there already is a monitor-owned BB named "image".

If a BB and its BDS tree are created in a single operation, as of this
patch the BDS tree will be created before the BB is given a name
(whereas it was the other way around before). This results in minor
change to the output of iotest 087, whose reference output is amended
accordingly.

abb21ac3e6 hmp: 'drive_add -n' for creating a node without BB
This patch adds an option to the drive_add HMP command to create only a
BlockDriverState without a BlockBackend on top.

The motivation for this is that libvirt needs to specify options to a
migration target (specifically, detect-zeroes). drive-mirror doesn't
allow specifying options, and the proper way to do this is to create the
target BDS separately with blockdev-add (where you can specify options)
and then use blockdev-mirror to that BDS.

However, libvirt can't use blockdev-add as long as it is still
experimental, and we're expecting that it will still take some time, so
we need to resort to drive_add.

The problem with drive_add is that so far it always created a BB, and
BDSes with a BB can't be used as a mirroring target as long as we don't
support multiple BBs per BDS - and while we're working towards that
goal, it's another thing that will still take some time.

So to achieve the goal, the simplest solution to provide the
functionality now without adding one-off options to the mirror QMP
commands is to extend drive_add to create nodes without BBs.

73176bee99 block: Fix snapshot=on cache modes
Since commit 91a097e, we end up with a somewhat weird cache mode
configuration with snapshot=on: The commit broke the cache mode
inheritance for the snapshot overlay so that it is opened as
writethrough instead of unsafe now. The following bdrv_append() call to
put it on top of the tree swaps the WCE flag with the snapshot's backing
file (i.e. the originally given file), so what we eventually get is
cache=writeback on the temporary overlay and
cache=writethrough,cache.no-flush=on on the real image file.

This patch changes things so that the temporary overlay gets
cache=unsafe again like it used to, and the real images get whatever the
user specified. This means that cache.direct is now respected even with
snapshot=on, and in the case of committing changes, the final flush is
no longer ignored except explicitly requested by the user.

51e72bc1dd qapi: Swap visit_* arguments for consistent 'name' placement
JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were
called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be
a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to
match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(),
where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the
otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's
time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the
'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument.

Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h
prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to
unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in
qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients.

Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and
those clients to match.

Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated
files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle
script to affect the rest of the code base:
 $ spatch --sp-file script `git grep -l '\bvisit_' -- '**/*.[ch]'`
I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB
indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of
visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to
the syntactically invalid 'const char*const[] strings'). The
movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors
if any callers were missed.

f8aa905a4f block: set device_list.tqe_prev to NULL on BDS removal
This fixes a regression introduced with commit 3f09bfbc7. Multiple
bugs arise in conjunction with live snapshots and mirroring operations
(which include active layer commit).

After a live snapshot occurs, the active layer and the base layer both
have a non-NULL tqe_prev field in the device_list, although the base
node's tqe_prev field points to a NULL entry.  This non-NULL tqe_prev
field occurs after the bdrv_append() in the external snapshot calls
change_parent_backing_link().

In change_parent_backing_link(), when the previous active layer is
removed from device_list, the device_list.tqe_prev pointer is not
set to NULL.

The operating scheme in the block layer is to indicate that a BDS belongs
in the bdrv_states device_list iff the device_list.tqe_prev pointer
is non-NULL.

This patch does two things:

1.) Introduces a new block layer helper bdrv_device_remove() to remove a
    BDS from the device_list, and
2.) uses that new API, which also fixes the regression once used in
    change_parent_backing_link().

12c7ec87a7 blockdev: Fix 'change' for slot devices
'change' and related operations did not work when used on guest devices
featuring removable media but no actual tray, because
blk_dev_is_tray_open() always returned false for them and the
blockdev-{insert,remove}-medium commands required it to return true.

Fix this by making blockdev-{insert,remove}-medium work on tray-less
devices. Also, blockdev-{open,close}-tray are now explicitly no-ops when
invoked on such devices, and blk_dev_change_media_cb() is instead
called by blockdev-{insert,remove}-medium (for tray-less devices only).

972606c4db blockdev: Error out on negative throttling option values
extract_common_blockdev_options() uses qemu_opt_get_number() to parse
the bps/iops numbers to uint64_t, then converts to double and stores in
ThrottleConfig. The actual parsing is done by strtoull() in
parse_option_number(). Negative numbers are wrapped to large positive
ones, and stored.

We used to reject negative numbers since 7d81c1413c, but this regressed
when the option parsing code was changed later. Now fix this again.

This time, define an arbitrary large upper limit (1e15), and check the
values so both negative and impractically big numbers are caught and
reported.

91a097e747 block: Move cache options into options QDict
This adds the cache mode options to the QDict, so that they can be
specified for child nodes (e.g. backing.cache.direct=off).

Child node inherit cache modes as options now, they don't use flags any

Note that this forbids specifying the cache mode for empty drives. It
didn't make sense anyway to specify it there, because it didn't have any
effect. blockdev_init() considers the cache options now bdrv_open()

6e0abc251d blockdev: Mark {insert, remove}-medium experimental
While in the long term we want throttling to be its own block filter
BDS, in the short term we want it to be part of the BB instead of a BDS;
even in the long term we may want legacy throttling to be automatically
tied to the BB.

blockdev-insert-medium and blockdev-remove-medium do not retain
throttling information in the BB (deliberately so). Therefore, using
them means tying this information to a BDS, which would break the model
described above. (The same applies to other flags such as
detect_zeroes.) We probably want to move this information to the BB or
its own filter BDS before blockdev-{insert,remove}-medium can be
considered completely stable.

Therefore, mark these functions experimental for the time being.

a0d64a61db throttle: Use bs->throttle_state instead of bs->io_limits_enabled
There are two ways to check for I/O limits in a BlockDriverState:

- bs->throttle_state: if this pointer is not NULL, it means that this
  BDS is member of a throttling group, its ThrottleTimers structure
  has been initialized and its I/O limits are ready to be applied.

- bs->io_limits_enabled: if true it means that the throttle_state
  pointer is valid _and_ the limits are currently enabled.

The latter is used in several places to check whether a BDS has I/O
limits configured, but what it really checks is whether requests
are being throttled or not. For example, io_limits_enabled can be
temporarily set to false in cases like bdrv_read_unthrottled() without
otherwise touching the throtting configuration of that BDS.

This patch replaces bs->io_limits_enabled with bs->throttle_state in
all cases where what we really want to check is the existence of I/O
limits, not whether they are currently enabled or not.

43de7e2de0 block: add a 'blockdev-snapshot' QMP command
One of the limitations of the 'blockdev-snapshot-sync' command is that
it does not allow passing BlockdevOptions to the newly created
snapshots, so they are always opened using the default values.

Extending the command to allow passing options is not a practical
solution because there is overlap between those options and some of
the existing parameters of the command.

This patch introduces a new 'blockdev-snapshot' command with a simpler
interface: it just takes two references to existing block devices that
will be used as the source and target for the snapshot.

Since the main difference between the two commands is that one of them
creates and opens the target image, while the other uses an already
opened one, the bulk of the implementation is shared.

a39a24fbb0 block: check for existing device IDs in external_snapshot_prepare()
The 'snapshot-node-name' parameter of blockdev-snapshot-sync allows
setting the node name of the image that is going to be created.

Before creating the image, external_snapshot_prepare() checks that the
name is not already being used. The check is however incomplete since
it only considers existing node names, but node names must not clash
with device IDs either because they share the same namespace.

If the user attempts to create a snapshot using the name of an
existing device for the 'snapshot-node-name' parameter the operation
will eventually fail, but only after the new image has been created.

This patch replaces bdrv_find_node() with bdrv_lookup_bs() to extend
the check to existing device IDs, and thus detect possible name
clashes before the new image is created.

6a8f9661dc block: Convert to new qapi union layout
We have two issues with our qapi union layout:
1) Even though the QMP wire format spells the tag 'type', the
C code spells it 'kind', requiring some hacks in the generator.
2) The C struct uses an anonymous union, which places all tag
values in the same namespace as all non-variant members. This
leads to spurious collisions if a tag value matches a non-variant
member's name.

Make the conversion to the new layout for block-related code.

dd62f1ca43 block: Implement bdrv_append() without bdrv_swap()
Remember all parent nodes and just change the pointers there instead of
swapping the contents of the BlockDriverState.

Handling of snapshot=on must be moved further down in bdrv_open()
because *pbs (which is the bs pointer in the BlockBackend) must already
be set before bdrv_append() is called. Otherwise bdrv_append() changes
the BB's pointer to the temporary snapshot, but bdrv_open() overwrites
it with the read-only original image.

We also need to be careful to update callers as the interface changes
(becomes less insane): Previously, the meaning of the two parameters was
inverted when bdrv_append() returns. Now any BDS pointers keep pointing
to the same node.

70b9433109 QemuOpts: Wean off qerror_report_err()
qerror_report_err() is a transitional interface to help with
converting existing monitor commands to QMP. It should not be used
elsewhere.

The only remaining user in qemu-option.c is qemu_opts_parse(). Is it
used in QMP context? If not, we can simply replace
qerror_report_err() by error_report_err().

The uses in qemu-img.c, qemu-io.c, qemu-nbd.c and under tests/ are
clearly not in QMP context.

The uses in vl.c aren't either, because the only QMP command handlers
there are qmp_query_status() and qmp_query_machines(), and they don't
call it.

Remaining uses:

* drive_def(): Command line -drive and such, HMP drive_add and pci_add

* hmp_chardev_add(): HMP chardev-add

* monitor_parse_command(): HMP core

* tmp_config_parse(): Command line -tpmdev

* net_host_device_add(): HMP host_net_add

* net_client_parse(): Command line -net and -netdev

* qemu_global_option(): Command line -global

* vnc_parse_func(): Command line -display, -vnc, default display, HMP
  change, QMP change.  Bummer.

* qemu_pci_hot_add_nic(): HMP pci_add

* usb_net_init(): Command line -usbdevice, HMP usb_add

Propagate errors through qemu_opts_parse(). Create a convenience
function qemu_opts_parse_noisily() that passes errors to
error_report_err(). Switch all non-QMP users outside tests to it.

That leaves vnc_parse_func(). Propagate errors through it. Since I'm
touching it anyway, rename it to vnc_parse().

76f4afb40f throttle: Add throttle group support
The throttle group support use a cooperative round robin scheduling

The principles of the algorithm are simple:
- Each BDS of the group is used as a token in a circular way.

- If a wait must be done the token timer will be armed so the token

9bd2b08f27 block: Add bitmap successors
A bitmap successor is an anonymous BdrvDirtyBitmap that is intended to
be created just prior to a sensitive operation (e.g. Incremental Backup)
that can either succeed or fail, but during the course of which we still
want a bitmap tracking writes.

On creating a successor, we "freeze" the parent bitmap which prevents
its deletion, enabling, anonymization, or creating a bitmap with the
same name.

On success, the parent bitmap can "abdicate" responsibility to the
successor, which will inherit its name. The successor will have been
tracking writes during the course of the backup operation. The parent
will be safely deleted.

On failure, we can "reclaim" the successor from the parent, unifying
them such that the resulting bitmap describes all writes occurring since
the last successful backup, for instance. Reclamation will thaw the
parent, but not explicitly re-enable it.

BdrvDirtyBitmap operations that target a single bitmap are protected
by assertions that the bitmap is not frozen and/or disabled.

BdrvDirtyBitmap operations that target a group of bitmaps, such as
bdrv_{set,reset}_dirty will ignore frozen/disabled drives with a
conditional instead.

Internal functions that enable/disable dirty bitmaps have assertions
added to them to prevent modifying frozen bitmaps.

341ebc2f81 qmp: Add block-dirty-bitmap-add and block-dirty-bitmap-remove
The new command pair is added to manage a user created dirty bitmap. The
dirty bitmap's name is mandatory and must be unique for the same device,
but different devices can have bitmaps with the same names.

The granularity is an optional field. If it is not specified, we will
choose a default granularity based on the cluster size if available,
clamped to between 4K and 64K to mirror how the 'mirror' code was
already choosing granularity. If we do not have cluster size info
available, we choose 64K. This code has been factored out into a helper
shared with block/mirror.

This patch also introduces the 'block_dirty_bitmap_lookup' helper,
which takes a device name and a dirty bitmap name and validates the
lookup, returning NULL and setting errp if there is a problem with
either field. This helper will be re-used in future patches in this
series.

The types added to block-core.json will be re-used in future patches
in this series, see:

d5a8ee60a0 qmp: fill in the image field in BlockDeviceInfo
The image field in BlockDeviceInfo is supposed to contain an ImageInfo
object. However that is being filled in by bdrv_query_info(), not by
bdrv_block_device_info(), which is where BlockDeviceInfo is actually
created.

Anyone calling bdrv_block_device_info() directly will get a null image
field. As a consequence of this, the HMP command 'info block -n -v'
crashes QEMU.

This patch moves the code that fills in that field from
bdrv_query_info() to bdrv_block_device_info().

81e5f78a9f block: use bdrv_get_device_or_node_name() in error messages
There are several error messages that identify a BlockDriverState by
its device name. However those errors can be produced in nodes that
don't have a device name associated.

messages are also updated to use the more generic term 'node' instead

751ebd76e6 blockjob: Allow nested pause
This patch changes block_job_pause to increase the pause counter and
block_job_resume to decrease it.

The counter will allow calling block_job_pause/block_job_resume
unconditionally on a job when we need to suspend the IO temporarily.

From now on, each block_job_resume must be paired with a block_job_pause
to keep the counter balanced.

The user pause from QMP or HMP will only trigger block_job_pause once
until it's resumed, this is achieved by adding a user_paused flag in
BlockJob.

One occurrence of block_job_resume in mirror_complete is replaced with
block_job_enter which does what is necessary.

In block_job_cancel, the cancel flag is good enough to instruct
coroutines to quit loop, so use block_job_enter to replace the unpaired
block_job_resume.

Upon block job IO error, user is notified about the entering to the
pause state, so this pause belongs to user pause, set the flag
accordingly and expect a matching QMP resume.

But once we enable backing reference in blockdev-add, or specifying

better.

5d6e96efb8 blockdev: acquire AioContext in QMP 'transaction' actions
The transaction QMP command performs operations atomically on a group of
drives. This command needs to acquire AioContext in order to work
safely when virtio-blk dataplane IOThreads are accessing drives.

The transactional nature of the command means that actions are split
into prepare, commit, abort, and clean functions. Acquire the
AioContext in prepare and don't release it until one of the other
functions is called. This prevents the IOThread from running the

73f1f7564d blockdev: drop unnecessary DriveBackupState field assignment
drive_backup_prepare() assigns DriveBackupState fields to NULL in the

allocated using g_malloc0() and other functions like

Do not explicitly assign fields to NULL so that the error path is

26f8b3a847 blockdev: Fix blockdev-add not to create DriveInfo
blockdev_init() always creates a DriveInfo, but only drive_new() fills
it in. qmp_blockdev_add() leaves it blank. This results in a drive

Board initialization code looking for IDE drive (0,0) can pick up one
of these bogus drives. The QMP command has to execute really early to
be visible. Not sure how likely that is in practice.

Fix by creating DriveInfo in drive_new(). Block backends created by
blockdev-add don't get one.

Breaks the test for "has been created by qmp_blockdev_add()" in
blockdev_mark_auto_del() and do_drive_del(), because it changes the
value of dinfo && !dinfo->enable_auto_del from true to false. Simply
test !dinfo instead.

Leaves DriveInfo member enable_auto_del unused. Drop it.

* Device model "usb-storage" prompts for keys. No other device model
  does, and this one probably shouldn't do it, either.

* ide_issue_trim_cb() uses bdrv_aio_discard() instead of
  blk_aio_discard() because it fishes its backend out of a BlockAIOCB,
  which has only the BlockDriverState.

* PC87312State has an unused BlockDriverState[] member.

blk_hide_on_behalf_of_do_drive_del().  Unfortunately, hiding turns the

26f54e9a3c block: New BlockBackend
A block device consists of a frontend device model and a backend.

A block backend has a tree of block drivers doing the actual work.
The tree is managed by the block layer.

We currently use a single abstraction BlockDriverState both for tree
nodes and the backend as a whole. Drawbacks:

* Its API includes both stuff that makes sense only at the block
  backend level (root of the tree) and stuff that's only for use
  within the block layer. This makes the API bigger and more complex
  than necessary. Moreover, it's not obvious which interfaces are
  meant for device models, and which really aren't.

* Since device models keep a reference to their backend, the backend
  object can't just be destroyed. But for media change, we need to
  replace the tree. Our solution is to make the BlockDriverState
  generic, with actual driver state in a separate object, pointed to
  by member opaque. That lets us replace the tree by deinitializing
  and reinitializing its root. This special need of the root makes
  the data structure awkward everywhere in the tree.

The general plan is to separate the APIs into "block backend", for use
by device models, monitor and whatever other code dealing with block
backends, and "block driver", for use by the block layer and whatever
other code (if any) dealing with trees and tree nodes.

Code dealing with block backends, device models in particular, should
become completely oblivious of BlockDriverState. This should let us
clean up both APIs, and the tree data structures.

This commit is a first step. It creates a minimal "block backend"
API: type BlockBackend and functions to create, destroy and find them.

BlockBackend objects are created and destroyed exactly when root
BlockDriverState objects are created and destroyed. "Root" in the
sense of "in bdrv_states". They're not yet used for anything; that'll
come shortly.

A root BlockDriverState is created with bdrv_new_root(), so where to
create a BlockBackend is obvious. Where these roots get destroyed
isn't always as obvious.

It is obvious in qemu-img.c, qemu-io.c and qemu-nbd.c, and in error
paths of blockdev_init(), blk_connect(). That leaves destruction of
objects successfully created by blockdev_init() and blk_connect().

blockdev_init() is used only by drive_new() and qmp_blockdev_add().
Objects created by the latter are currently indestructible (see commit
48f364d "blockdev: Refuse to drive_del something added with
blockdev-add" and commit 2d246f0 "blockdev: Introduce
DriveInfo.enable_auto_del"). Objects created by the former get
destroyed by drive_del().

Objects created by blk_connect() get destroyed by blk_disconnect().

BlockBackend is reference-counted. Its reference count never exceeds
one so far, but that's going to change.

In drive_del(), the BB's reference count is surely one now. The BDS's
reference count is greater than one when something else is holding a
reference, such as a block job. In this case, the BB is destroyed
right away, but the BDS lives on until all extra references get
dropped.

5abbf0ee4d block: Catch simultaneous usage of options and their aliases
While thinking about precedence of conflicting block device options from
different sources, I noticed that you can specify both an option and its
legacy alias at the same time (e.g. readonly=on,read-only=off). Rather
than specifying the order of precedence, we should simply forbid such
combinations.

3ae59580a0 block: Keep DriveInfo alive until BlockDriverState dies
If the BDS's refcnt > 0, drive_del() destroys the DriveInfo, but not
the BDS. This can happen in three places:

* Device model destruction during unplug: blockdev_auto_del()

* Xen IDE unplug: pci_piix3_xen_ide_unplug()

* drive_del command when no device model is attached: do_drive_del()

The other callers of drive_del are on error paths where refcnt == 1.

If the user somehow manages to plug in a device model using a BDS that
has gone through drive_del(), the legacy configuration passed in
DriveInfo doesn't reach the device model, and automatic deletion on
unplug doesn't work. Worse, some device models such as scsi-disk
crash when DriveInfo doesn't exist.

This is theoretical; I didn't research an actual reproducer. The problem
was introduced when we replaced DriveInfo reference counting by BDS
reference counting in commit a94a3fa..fa510eb.

Fix by keeping DriveInfo alive until its BDS dies.

This affects qemu_drive_opts: now you can't reuse the same ID for new
drive options until the BDS dies. Before, you could, but since the
code always attempts to create a BDS with the same ID next, the
enclosing operation "create a new drive" failed anyway. Different
error path, same result.

Unfortunately, the fix involves use of blockdev.c stuff from block.c,
which is a layering violation. Fortunately, my forthcoming
BlockBackend work will get rid of it again.

48f364dd0b blockdev: Refuse to drive_del something added with blockdev-add
For some device models, the guest can prevent unplug. Some users need a
way to forcibly revoke device model access to the block backend then, so
the underlying images can be safely used for something else.

drive_del lets you do that. Unfortunately, it conflates revoking access
with destroying the backend.

Commit 9063f81 made drive_del immediately destroy the root BDS. Nice:
the device name becomes available for reuse immediately. Not so nice:
the device model's pointer to the root BDS dangles, and we're prone to
crash when the memory gets reused.

Commit d22b2f4 fixed that by hiding the root BDS instead of destroying
it. Destruction only happens on unplug. "Hiding" means removing it
from bdrv_states and graph_bdrv_states; see bdrv_make_anon().

This "destroy on revoke" is a misfeature we don't want to carry
forward to blockdev-add, just like "destroy on unplug" (commit
2d246f0). So make drive_del fail on anything added with blockdev-add.

We'll add separate QMP commands to revoke device model access and to
destroy backends.

13d8cc515d block: add backing-file option to block-stream
On some image chains, QEMU may not always be able to resolve the
filenames properly, when updating the backing file of an image
after a block job.

For instance, certain relative pathnames may fail, or drives may
have been specified originally by file descriptor (e.g. /dev/fd/???),
or a relative protocol pathname may have been used.

In these instances, QEMU may lack the information to be able to make
the correct choice, but the user or management layer most likely does
have that knowledge.

With this extension to the block-stream api, the user is able to change
the backing file of the active layer as part of the block-stream
operation.

This allows the change to be 'safe', in the sense that if the attempt
to write the active image metadata fails, then the block-stream
operation returns failure, without disrupting the guest.

If a backing file string is not specified in the command, the backing
file string to use is determined in the same manner as it was
previously.

54e2690090 block: extend block-commit to accept a string for the backing file
On some image chains, QEMU may not always be able to resolve the

This allows the change to be 'safe', in the sense that if the attempt
to write the overlay image metadata fails, then the block-commit
operation returns failure, without disrupting the guest.

If the commit top is the active layer, then specifying the backing
file string will be treated as an error (there is no overlay image
to modify in that case).

If a backing file string is not specified in the command, the backing
file string to use is determined in the same manner as it was

fa40e65622 block: add QAPI command to allow live backing file change
This allows a user to make a live change to the backing file recorded in
an open image.

The image file to modify can be specified 2 ways:

1) image filename
2) image node-name

Note: this does not cause the backing file itself to be reopened; it
merely changes the backing filename in the image file structure, and
in internal BDS structures.

It is the responsibility of the user to pass a filename string that
can be resolved when the image chain is reopened, and the filename
string is not validated.

A good analogy for this command is that it is a live version of
'qemu-img rebase -u', with respect to changing the backing file string.

[Jeff is offline so I respun this patch in his absence. Dropped image
filename since using node-name is preferred and this is a new command.
No need to introduce the limitations of finding images by filename.
