This series removes ad hoc RAM allocation API (memory_region_allocate_system_memory)
and consolidates it around hostmem backend. It allows to
* resolve conflicts between global -mem-prealloc and hostmem's "policy" option,
fixing premature allocation before binding policy is applied
* simplify complicated memory allocation routines which had to deal with 2 ways
to allocate RAM.
* reuse hostmem backends of a choice for main RAM without adding extra CLI
options to duplicate hostmem features. A recent case was -mem-shared, to
enable vhost-user on targets that don't support hostmem backends [1] (ex: s390)
* move RAM allocation from individual boards into generic machine code and
provide them with prepared MemoryRegion.
* clean up deprecated NUMA features which were tied to the old API (see patches)
- "numa: remove deprecated -mem-path fallback to anonymous RAM"
- (POSTPONED, waiting on libvirt side) "forbid '-numa node,mem' for 5.0 and newer machine types"
- (POSTPONED) "numa: remove deprecated implicit RAM distribution between nodes"
Introduce a new machine.memory-backend property and wrapper code that aliases
global -mem-path and -mem-alloc into automatically created hostmem backend
properties (provided memory-backend was not set explicitly given by user).
A bulk of trivial patches then follow to incrementally convert individual
boards to using machine.memory-backend provided MemoryRegion.
Board conversion typically involves:
* providing MachineClass::default_ram_size and MachineClass::default_ram_id
so generic code could create default backend if user didn't explicitly provide
memory-backend or -m options
* dropping memory_region_allocate_system_memory() call
* using convenience MachineState::ram MemoryRegion, which points to MemoryRegion
allocated by ram-memdev
On top of that for some boards:
* missing ram_size checks are added (typically it were boards with fixed ram size)
* ram_size fixups are replaced by checks and hard errors, forcing user to
provide correct "-m" values instead of ignoring it and continuing running.
After all boards are converted, the old API is removed and memory allocation
routines are cleaned up.

It's supposed that SOC will check if "-m" provided
RAM size is valid by setting "ram-size" property and
then board would read back valid (possibly corrected
value) to map RAM MemoryReging with valid size.
It isn't doing so, since check is called only
indirectly from
aspeed_sdmc_reset()->asc->compute_conf()
or much later when guest writes to configuration
register.
So depending on "-m" value QEMU end-ups with a warning
and an invalid MemoryRegion size allocated and mapped.
(examples:
-M ast2500-evb -m 1M
0000000080000000-000000017ffffffe (prio 0, i/o): aspeed-ram-container
0000000080000000-00000000800fffff (prio 0, ram): ram
0000000080100000-00000000bfffffff (prio 0, i/o): max_ram
-M ast2500-evb -m 3G
0000000080000000-000000017ffffffe (prio 0, i/o): aspeed-ram-container
0000000080000000-000000013fffffff (prio 0, ram): ram
[DETECTED OVERFLOW!] 0000000140000000-00000000bfffffff (prio 0, i/o): max_ram
)
On top of that sdmc falls back and reports to guest
"default" size, it thinks machine should have.
This patch makes ram-size check actually work and
changes behavior from a warning later on during
machine reset to error_fatal at the moment SOC.ram-size
is set so user will have to fix RAM size on CLI
to start machine.
It also gets out of the way mutable ram-size logic,
so we could consolidate RAM allocation logic around
pre-allocated hostmem backend (supplied by user or
auto created by generic machine code depending on
supplied -m/mem-path/mem-prealloc options.

With the Quadra 800 emulation, mos6522 timers processing can consume
until 70% of the host CPU time with an idle guest (I guess the problem
should also happen with PowerMac emulation).
On a recent system, it can be painless (except if you look at top), but
on an old host like a PowerMac G5 the guest kernel can be terribly slow
during the boot sequence (for instance, unpacking initramfs can take 15
seconds rather than only 3 seconds).
We can avoid this CPU overload by enabling QEMU internal timers only if
the mos6522 counter interrupts are enabled. Sometime the guest kernel
wants to read the counters values, but we don't need the timers to
update the counters.
With this patch applied, an idle Q800 consumes only 3% of host CPU time
(and the guest can boot in a decent time).

It is the responsibility of the backend to properly end an event

sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator. Evidence:
* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).
* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.
Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.
Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects. qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400
to 4200. Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects.
Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also

hw/semihosting/config.c, monitor/monitor.c, qdev-monitor.c, and

As explained in commit aff39be0ed:
Both functions, object_initialize() and object_property_add_child()
increase the reference counter of the new object, so one of the
references has to be dropped afterwards to get the reference
counting right. Otherwise the child object will not be properly
cleaned up when the parent gets destroyed.
Thus let's use now object_initialize_child() instead to get the
reference counting here right.
This patch was generated using the following Coccinelle script
(with a bit of manual fix-up for overly long lines):
@use_object_initialize_child@
expression parent_obj;
expression child_ptr;
expression child_name;
expression child_type;
expression child_size;
expression errp;
@@
(
- object_initialize(child_ptr, child_size, child_type);
+ object_initialize_child(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size,
+ child_type, &error_abort, NULL);
... when != parent_obj
- object_property_add_child(parent_obj, child_name, OBJECT(child_ptr), NULL);
...
?- object_unref(OBJECT(child_ptr));
|
- object_initialize(child_ptr, child_size, child_type);
+ object_initialize_child(parent_obj, child_name, child_ptr, child_size,
+ child_type, errp, NULL);
... when != parent_obj
- object_property_add_child(parent_obj, child_name, OBJECT(child_ptr), errp);
...
?- object_unref(OBJECT(child_ptr));
)
While the object_initialize() function doesn't take an
'Error *errp' argument, the object_initialize_child() does.
Since this code is used when a machine is created (and is not
yet running), we deliberately choose to use the &error_abort
argument instead of ignoring errors if an object creation failed.

Some trace points are attributed to the wrong source file. Happens
when we neglect to update trace-events for code motion, or add events
in the wrong place, or misspell the file name.
Clean up with help of cleanup-trace-events.pl. Same funnies as in the
previous commit, of course. Manually shorten its change to

Tracked down with cleanup-trace-events.pl. Funnies requiring manual
post-processing:
* block.c and blockdev.c trace points are in block/trace-events.
* hw/block/nvme.c uses the preprocessor to hide its trace point use
from cleanup-trace-events.pl.
* include/hw/xen/xen_common.h trace points are in hw/xen/trace-events.
* net/colo-compare and net/filter-rewriter.c use pseudo trace points
colo_compare_udp_miscompare and colo_filter_rewriter_debug to guard

Instead of including the same list of devices for each target,
set CONFIG_PCI to true, and make the devices default to present
whenever PCI is available. However, s390x does not want all the
PCI devices, so there is a separate symbol to enable them.
Done mostly with the following script:
while read i; do
i=${i%=y}; i=${i#CONFIG_}
sed -i -e'/^config '$i'$/!b' -en \
-e'a\' -e' default y if PCI_DEVICES\' -e' depends on PCI' \
`grep -lw $i hw/*/Kconfig`

whenever the symbol is not really related to PCI.

The make_device_config.sh script is replaced by minikconf, which
is modified to support the same command line as its predecessor.
The roots of the parsing are default-configs/*.mak, Kconfig.host and
hw/Kconfig. One difference with make_device_config.sh is that all symbols
have to be defined in a Kconfig file, including those coming from the
configure script. This is the reason for the Kconfig.host file introduced
in the previous patch. Whenever a file in default-configs/*.mak used
$(...) to refer to a config-host.mak symbol, this is replaced by a
Kconfig dependency; this part must be done already in this patch
for bisectability.

The Kconfig files were generated mostly with this script:
for i in `grep -ho CONFIG_[A-Z0-9_]* default-configs/* | sort -u`; do
set fnord `git grep -lw $i -- 'hw/*/Makefile.objs' `
shift
if test $# = 1; then
cat >> $(dirname $1)/Kconfig << EOF
config ${i#CONFIG_}
bool
EOF
git add $(dirname $1)/Kconfig
else
echo $i $*
fi
done
sed -i '$d' hw/*/Kconfig
for i in hw/*; do
if test -d $i && ! test -f $i/Kconfig; then
touch $i/Kconfig
git add $i/Kconfig
fi
done
Whenever a symbol is referenced from multiple subdirectories, the
script prints the list of directories that reference the symbol.
These symbols have to be added manually to the Kconfig files.
Kconfig.host and hw/Kconfig were created manually.

At the moment the handling of init-svtor and cpuwait initial
values is split between armsse.c and iotkit-sysctl.c:
the code in armsse.c sets the initial state of the CPU
object by setting the init-svtor and start-powered-off
properties, but the iotkit-sysctl.c code has its own
code setting the reset values of its registers (which are
then used when updating the CPU when the guest makes
runtime changes).
Clean this up by making the armsse.c code set properties on the
iotkit-sysctl object to define the initial values of the
registers, so they always match the initial CPU state,
and update the comments in armsse.c accordingly.

The CPUWAIT register acts as a sort of power-control: if a bit
in it is 1 then the CPU will have been forced into waiting
when the system was reset (which in QEMU we model as the
CPU starting powered off). Writing a 0 to the register will
allow the CPU to boot (for QEMU, we model this as powering
it on). Note that writing 0 to the register does not power
off a CPU.
For this to work correctly we need to also honour the
INITSVTOR* registers, which let the guest control where the
CPU will load its SP and PC from when it comes out of reset.

The Peripheral Protection Controller's handling of unused ports
is that if there is nothing connected to the port's downstream
then it does not create the sysbus MMIO region for the upstream
end of the port. This results in odd behaviour when there is
an unused port in the middle of the range: since sysbus MMIO
regions are implicitly consecutively allocated, any used ports
above the unused ones end up with sysbus MMIO region numbers
that don't match the port number.
Avoid this numbering mismatch by creating dummy MMIO regions
for the unused ports. This doesn't change anything for our
existing boards, which don't have any gaps in the middle of
the port ranges they use; but it will be needed for the Musca

In order to handle a race condition in the MacOS 9 CUDA driver, a
delay was introduced when raising the VIA SR interrupt inspired by
similar code in MacOnLinux.
During original testing of the MacOS 9 patches it was found that the
30us delay used in MacOnLinux did not work reliably within QEMU, and a
value of 300us was required to function correctly.
Recent experiments have shown two things: firstly when booting Linux,
MacOS 9 and MacOS X the fast path which bypasses the delay is never
triggered once the OS kernel is loaded making it effectively
useless. Rather than leave this code in place where a guest could
potentially enable it by accident and break itself, we might as well
just remove it.
Secondly the previous reliability issues are no longer present, and
this value can be reduced down to 20us with no apparent ill
effects. This has the benefit of considerably improving the
responsiveness of the ADB keyboard and mouse within the guest.

It's been marked as deprecated in QEMU v2.6.0 already, so really nobody
should use the legacy "ivshmem" device anymore (but use ivshmem-plain or
ivshmem-doorbell instead). Time to remove the deprecated device now.
Belatedly also update a mention of the deprecated "ivshmem" in the file
docs/specs/ivshmem-spec.txt to "ivshmem-doorbell". Missed in commit

Most files that have TABs only contain a handful of them. Change
them to spaces so that we don't confuse people.
disas, standard-headers, linux-headers and libdecnumber are imported
from other projects and probably should be exempted from the check.
Outside those, after this patch the following files still contain both
8-space and TAB sequences at the beginning of the line. Many of them

In the TZ Memory Protection Controller, the BLK_MAX register is supposed
to return the maximum permitted value of the BLK_IDX register. Our
implementation incorrectly returned max+1 (ie the total number of
valid index values, since BLK_IDX is zero-based).
Correct this off-by-one error. Since we consistently initialize
and use s->blk_max throughout the implementation as the 'size'
of the LUT, just adjust the value we return when the guest reads
the BLK_MAX register, rather than trying to change the semantics
of the s->blk_max internal struct field.

While most developers are now using UTF-8 environments, it's
harder to guarantee that error messages will be output to
a multibyte locale. Rather than risking error messages that
get corrupted into mojibake when the user runs qemu in a
non-multibyte locale, let's stick to straight ASCII error
messages, rather than assuming that our use of UTF-8 in source
code string constants will work unchanged in other locales.

object_new() returns a new backend with refcount == 1 and
then later object_property_add_child() increases refcount to 2
So when ivshmem is destroyed, the backend it has created isn't
destroyed along with it as children cleanup will bring
backend's refcount only to 1, which leaks backend including
resources it is using.
Drop the original reference from object_new() once backend
is attached to its parent.

Calling error_report() in a function that takes an Error ** argument

While there, split a warning consisting of multiple sentences to

A significant part of hyperv.c is not actually tied to x86, and can
be moved to hw/.
This will allow to maintain most of Hyper-V and VMBus
target-independent, and to avoid conflicts with inclusion of
arch-specific headers down the road in VMBus implementation.
Also this stuff can now be opt-out with CONFIG_HYPERV.

Make sint ack callback accept an opaque pointer, that is stored on
sint_route at creation time.
This allows for more convenient interaction with the callback.
Besides, nothing outside hyperv.c should need to know the layout of
HvSintRoute fields any more so its declaration can be removed from the

Make hyperv_testdev slightly easier to follow and enhance in future.
For that, put the hyperv sint routes (wrapped in a helper structure) on
a linked list rather than a fixed-size array. Besides, this way
HvSintRoute can be treated as an opaque structure, allowing for easier
refactoring of the core Hyper-V SynIC code in followup pathches.

Commit 2aece63c8a "hostmem: detect host backend memory is being used
properly" fixed "ivshmem-plain" to reject memory backends that are
already in use, and to block their deletion while in use. Two bugs
escaped review:
* New ivshmem_plain_exit() fails to call ivshmem_exit(). This breaks
unplug. Reproducer: migration after unplug still fails with
"Migration is disabled when using feature 'peer mode' in device
'ivshmem'".
* It failed to update legacy "ivshmem". Harmless, because it creates
the memory backend itself, and nothing else should use it.
Fix by moving the two host_memory_backend_set_mapped() calls into
ivshmem_common_realize() and ivshmem_exit(), guarded by s->hostmem.

Validate the config settings that the guest tries to set.
The wiki page documentation is not really accurate here:
generally rather than failing requests to set bad parameters,
the hardware will just clip them to something sensible.
Validate the most important parameters: sizes and
the viewport offsets. This prevents the framebuffer
code from trying to read out-of-range memory.
In the property handling code, we validate the new parameters every
time we encounter a tag that sets them. This means we validate the
config multiple times if the request includes multiple config-setting
tags, but the code would require significant restructuring to do a
validation only once but still return the clipped settings for
get-parameter tags and the buffer allocation tag.
Validation of settings made via the older bcm2835_fb_mbox_push()
function will be done in the next commit.

The raspi framebuffir in bcm2835_fb supports the definition
of a virtual "viewport", which is smaller than the full
physical framebuffer size and at an adjustable offset within
it. Only the viewport area is sent to the screen. This allows
the guest to do things like double buffering, or scrolling
by adjusting the viewport origin. Currently QEMU doesn't
implement this at all.
Add support for this feature:
* the property mailbox code needs to distinguish the
virtual width/height from the physical width/height
* the framebuffer code needs to do something with the
virtual width/height/origin information
Note that the wiki documentation on the semantics of the
virtual and physical height and width has it the wrong way
around -- the virtual size is the size of the allocated
buffer, and the physical size is the size of the display,
so the virtual size is always the same as or larger than
the physical.
If the viewport size is set smaller than the physical
screen size, we ignore the viewport settings completely
and just display the physical screen area.

Refactor the fb property setting code so that rather than
using a set of pointers to local variables to track
whether a config value has been updated in the current

The handling of framebuffer properties in the bcm2835_property code
is a bit clumsy, because for each of the many fb related properties
we try to track the value we're about to set and whether we're going
to be setting a value, and then we hand all the new values off
to the framebuffer via a function which takes them all as separate
arguments. It would be simpler if the property code could easily
copy all the framebuffer's current settings, update them with
the new specified values and then ask the framebuffer to switch
to the new set.
As the first part of this refactoring, pull all the fb config
settings fields in BCM2835FBState out into their own struct.

This is because of a reset ordering problem -- the TZ MPC
resets after the CPU, but an M-profile CPU's reset function
includes memory loads to get the initial PC and SP, which
then go through an MPC that hasn't yet been reset.
The simplest fix for this is to zero the LUT when we
initialize the data, which will result in the MPC's
translate function giving the right answers for these
early memory accesses.

aux_create_slave() calls qdev_init_nofail() which in turn "realizes"
the corresponding object. This is unlike qdev_create(), and it is wrong
because qdev_init_nofail() must not be called from an instance_init
function. Move qdev_init_nofail() and the subsequent aux_map_slave into
the caller's realize function.
There are two more bugs that needs to be fixed here, too, where the
objects are created but not added as children. Therefore when
you call object_unparent on them, nothing happens.
In particular dpcd and edid give you an infinite loop in bus_unparent,
because device_unparent is not called and does not remove them from
the list of devices on the bus.

All Aspeed SoC clocks are driven by an input source clock which can
have different frequencies : 24MHz or 25MHz, and also, on the Aspeed
AST2400 SoC, 48MHz. The H-PLL (CPU) clock is defined from a
calculation using parameters in the H-PLL Parameter register or from a
predefined set of frequencies if the setting is strapped by hardware
(Aspeed AST2400 SoC). The other clocks of the SoC are then defined
from the H-PLL using dividers.
We introduce first the APB clock because it should be used to drive
the Aspeed timer model.

Since this means we now change transaction mappings when

Implement the Arm TrustZone Memory Protection Controller, which sits
in front of RAM and allows secure software to configure it to either
pass through or reject transactions.
We implement the MPC as a QEMU IOMMU, which will direct transactions
either through to the devices and memory behind it or to a special
"never works" AddressSpace if they are blocked.
This initial commit implements the skeleton of the device:
* it always permits accesses
* it doesn't implement most of the registers
* it doesn't implement the interrupt or other behaviour

The ASPEED SoCs contain a single register that returns random data when
read. This models that register so that guests can use it.
The random number data register has a corresponding control register,
however it returns data regardless of the state of the enabled bit, so
the model follows this behaviour.
When the qcrypto call fails we exit as the guest uses the random number
device to feed it's entropy pool, which is used for cryptographic
purposes.

The 6522 VIA timer frequency cannot be set by altering registers within the
device itself and hence it is a fixed property of the machine.
Move the initialisation of the timer frequency to the mos6522 reset function
and ensure that any subclasses always call the parent reset function so that
it isn't required to store the timer frequency within vmstate_mos6522_timer
itself.
By moving the frequency initialisation to the device reset function then we
find that the realize function for both mos6522 and mos6522_cuda becomes
obsolete and can simply be removed.

Examining the migration stream it can be seen that the mos6522 device state is
being stored separately rather than as part of the CUDA device which is
incorrect (and likely to cause issues if another mos6522 device is added to
the machine).
Resolve this by embedding the mos6522_cuda device directly within the CUDA
device rather than using a QOM object link to reference the device separately.
Note that we also bump the version in vmstate_cuda to reflect this change: this
isn't particularly important for the moment as the Mac machine migration isn't
100% reliable due to issues migrating the timebase under TCG.

In icount mode, instructions that access io memory spaces in the middle
of the translation block invoke TB recompilation. After recompilation,
such instructions become last in the TB and are allowed to access io
memory spaces.
When the code includes instruction like i386 'xchg eax, 0xffffd080'
which accesses APIC, QEMU goes into an infinite loop of the recompilation.
This instruction includes two memory accesses - one read and one write.
After the first access, APIC calls cpu_report_tpr_access, which restores
the CPU state to get the current eip. But cpu_restore_state_from_tb
resets the cpu->can_do_io flag which makes the second memory access invalid.
Therefore the second memory access causes a recompilation of the block.
Then these operations repeat again and again.
This patch moves resetting cpu->can_do_io flag from
cpu_restore_state_from_tb to cpu_loop_exit* functions.
It also adds a parameter for cpu_restore_state which controls restoring
icount. There is no need to restore icount when we only query CPU state
without breaking the TB. Restoring it in such cases leads to the
incorrect flow of the virtual time.
In most cases new parameter is true (icount should be recalculated).
But there are two cases in i386 and openrisc when the CPU state is only
queried without the need to break the TB. This patch fixes both of
these cases.

Some register blocks of the ast2500 are protected by protection key
registers which require the right magic value to be written to those
registers to allow those registers to be mutated.
Register manuals indicate that writing the correct magic value to these
registers should cause subsequent reads from those values to return 1,
and writing any other value should cause subsequent reads to return 0.
Previously, qemu implemented these registers incorrectly: the registers
were handled as simple memory, meaning that writing some value x to a
protection key register would result in subsequent reads from that
register returning the same value x. The protection was implemented by
ensuring that the current value of that register equaled the magic
value.
This modifies qemu to have the correct behaviour: attempts to write to a
ast2500 protection register results in a transition to 1 or 0 depending
on whether the written value is the correct magic. The protection logic
is updated to ensure that the value of the register is nonzero.
This bug caused deadlocks with u-boot HEAD: when u-boot is done with a
protectable register block, it attempts to lock it by writing the
bitwise inverse of the correct magic value, and then spinning forever
until the register reads as zero. Since qemu implemented writes to these
registers as ordinary memory writes, writing the inverse of the magic
value resulted in subsequent reads returning that value, leading to
u-boot spinning forever.

This is effectively taking the 6522 parts out of cuda.c and turning them
into a separate device whilst also applying some style tidy-ups and including
a conversion to trace-events.

Commit b981289c49 "PPC: Cuda: Use cuda timer to expose tbfreq to guest" altered
the timer calculations from those based upon the hardware CUDA clock frequency
to those based upon the CPU timebase frequency.
In fact we can isolate the differences to 2 simple changes: one to the counter
read value and another to the counter load time. Move these changes into
separate functions so the implementation can be swapped later.

Now that we have successfully decoupled the timebase frequency and the hardware
timer frequency, set the timer 1 frequency property to CUDA_TIMER_FREQ and alter
get_next_irq_time() to use it rather than the hard-coded constant.
In addition to this we must now switch the tb_diff calculation over to use the
timebase frequency now that the hardware clock frequency and the timebase
frequency are different.

As of commit 660c97eef6 ("ivshmem: use kvm irqfd for msi notifications"),
QEMU crashes with:
ivshmem: msix_set_vector_notifiers failed
msix_unset_vector_notifiers: Assertion `dev->msix_vector_use_notifier && dev->msix_vector_release_notifier' failed.
if MSI-X is repeatedly enabled and disabled on the ivshmem device, for example
by loading and unloading the Windows ivshmem driver. This is because
msix_unset_vector_notifiers() doesn't call any of the release notifier callbacks
since MSI-X is already disabled at that point (msix_enabled() returning false
is how this transition is detected in the first place). Thus ivshmem_vector_mask()
doesn't run and when MSI-X is subsequently enabled again ivshmem_vector_unmask()
fails.
This is fixed by keeping track of unmasked vectors and making sure that
ivshmem_vector_mask() always runs on MSI-X disable.

As of commit 660c97eef6 ("ivshmem: use kvm irqfd for msi notifications"),
QEMU crashes with:
kvm_irqchip_commit_routes: Assertion `ret == 0' failed.
if the ivshmem device is configured with more vectors than what the server
supports. This is caused by the ivshmem_vector_unmask() being called on
vectors that have not been initialized by ivshmem_add_kvm_msi_virq().
This commit fixes it by adding a simple check to the mask and unmask
callbacks.
Note that the opposite mismatch, if the server supplies more vectors than
what the device is configured for, is already handled and leads to output
like:
Too many eventfd received, device has 1 vectors
To reproduce the assert, run:
ivshmem-server -n 0

The point of writing a macro embedded in a 'do { ... } while (0)'
loop (particularly if the macro has multiple statements or would
otherwise end with an 'if' statement) is so that the macro can be
used as a drop-in statement with the caller supplying the
trailing ';'. Although our coding style frowns on brace-less 'if':
if (cond)
statement;
else
something else;
that is the classic case where failure to use do/while(0) wrapping
would cause the 'else' to pair with any embedded 'if' in the macro
rather than the intended outer 'if'. But conversely, if the macro
includes an embedded ';', then the same brace-less coding style
would now have two statements, making the 'else' a syntax error
rather than pairing with the outer 'if'. Thus, even though our
coding style with required braces is not impacted, ending a macro
with ';' makes our code harder to port to projects that use
brace-less styles.
The change should have no semantic impact. I was not able to
fully compile-test all of the changes (as some of them are
examples of the ugly bit-rotting debug print statements that are
completely elided by default, and I didn't want to recompile
with the necessary -D witnesses - cleaning those up is left as a
bite-sized task for another day); I did, however, audit that for
all files touched, all callers of the changed macros DID supply
a trailing ';' at the callsite, and did not appear to be used
as part of a brace-less conditional.

The ASPEED hardware contains a lock register for the SCU that disables
any writes to the SCU when it is locked. The machine comes up with the
lock enabled, but on all known hardware u-boot will unlock it and leave
it unlocked when loading the kernel.
This means the kernel expects the SCU to be unlocked. When booting from
an emulated ROM the normal u-boot unlock path is executed. Things don't
go well when booting using the -kernel command line, as u-boot does not
run first.
Change behaviour so that when a kernel is passed to the machine, set the
reset value of the SCU to be unlocked.

The "slow" ivshmem-tests currently fail when they are running on a
big endian host:
$ uname -m
ppc64
$ V=1 QTEST_QEMU_BINARY=x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64 tests/ivshmem-test -m slow
/x86_64/ivshmem/single: OK

/x86_64/ivshmem/server-msi: qemu-system-x86_64:
-device ivshmem-doorbell,chardev=chr0,vectors=2: server sent invalid ID message
Broken pipe
The problem is that the server side code in ivshmem_server_send_one_msg()
correctly translates all messages IDs into little endian 64-bit values,
but the client side code in the ivshmem_recv_msg() function does not swap
the byte order back. Fix it by passing the value through le64_to_cpu().

The mmio-interface device is not something we want to allow
users to create on the command line:
* it is intended as an implementation detail of the memory
subsystem, which gets created and deleted by that
subsystem on demand; it makes no sense to create it
by hand on the command line
* it uses a pointer property 'host_ptr' which can't be
set on the command line
Mark the device as not user_creatable to avoid confusion.

The current CONFIG_IVSHMEM is confusing, because it looks like it's a
flag for "do we have ivshmem support?", but actually it's a flag for
"is the ivshmem PCI device being compiled?" (and implicitly "do we
have ivshmem support?" is tested with CONFIG_EVENTFD).
Rename it to CONFIG_IVSHMEM_DEVICE to clear this confusion up;
shortly we will add a new CONFIG_IVSHMEM which really does indicate
whether the host can support ivshmem.

In some cases a failing VMSTATE_*_EQUAL does not mean we detected a bug,
but it's actually the best we can do. Especially in these cases a verbose
error message is required.
Let's introduce infrastructure for specifying a error hint to be used if
equal check fails. Let's do this by adding a parameter to the _EQUAL
macros called _err_hint. Also change all current users to pass NULL as
last parameter so nothing changes for them.
