cb836434cd nvdimm: add 'unarmed' option
Currently the only vNVDIMM backend can guarantee the guest write
persistence is device DAX on Linux, because no host-side kernel cache
is involved in the guest access to it. The approach to detect whether
the backend is device DAX needs to access sysfs, which may not work
with SELinux.

Instead, we add the 'unarmed' option to device 'nvdimm', so that users
or management utils, which have enough knowledge about the backend,
can control the unarmed flag in guest ACPI NFIT via this option. The
guest Linux NVDIMM driver, for example, will mark the corresponding
vNVDIMM device read-only if the unarmed flag in guest NFIT is set.

The default value of 'unarmed' option is 'off' in order to keep the
backwards compatibility.

9837684316 hostmem-file: add "align" option
When mmap(2) the backend files, QEMU uses the host page size
(getpagesize(2)) by default as the alignment of mapping address.
However, some backends may require alignments different than the page
size. For example, mmap a device DAX (e.g., /dev/dax0.0) on Linux
kernel 4.13 to an address, which is 4K-aligned but not 2M-aligned,
fails with a kernel message like

[617494.969768] dax dax0.0: qemu-system-x86: dax_mmap: fail, unaligned vma (0x7fa37c579000 - 0x7fa43c579000, 0x1fffff)

Because there is no common approach to get such alignment requirement,
we add the 'align' option to 'memory-backend-file', so that users or
management utils, which have enough knowledge about the backend, can
specify a proper alignment via this option.

The vhost-user protocol specification does not define "guest address"

c117bb14ff QAPI & interop: Clarify events emitted by 'block-job-cancel'
When you cancel an in-progress 'mirror' job (or "active `block-commit`")
with QMP `block-job-cancel`, it emits the event: BLOCK_JOB_CANCELLED.
However, when `block-job-cancel` is issued *after* `drive-mirror` has
indicated (via the event BLOCK_JOB_READY) that the source and
destination have reached synchronization:

    [...] # Snip `drive-mirror` invocation & outputs
    {
      "execute":"block-job-cancel",
      "arguments":{
        "device":"virtio0"
      }
    }

    {"return": {}}

It (`block-job-cancel`) will counterintuitively emit the event
'BLOCK_JOB_COMPLETED':

    {
      "timestamp":{
        "seconds":1510678024,
        "microseconds":526240
      },
      "event":"BLOCK_JOB_COMPLETED",
      "data":{
        "device":"virtio0",
        "len":41126400,
        "offset":41126400,
        "speed":0,
        "type":"mirror"
      }
    }

But this is expected behaviour, where the _COMPLETED event indicates
that synchronization has successfully ended (and the destination now has
a point-in-time copy, which is at the time of cancel).

So add a small note to this effect in 'block-core.json'. While at it,
also update the "Live disk synchronization -- drive-mirror and
blockdev-mirror" section in 'live-block-operations.rst'.

(Thanks: Max Reitz for reminding me of this caveat on IRC.)

1b3bbc6887 Use qemu.org domain name
The owner of qemu.org has delegated authority to modify DNS records to
the QEMU Project. This has allowed us to use the domain name without
worries about IP address changes or technical issues disrupting service.
The issues described in commit 8593898109
("Use qemu-project.org domain name") have therefore been mitigated.

This patch switches back to consistently using qemu.org instead of
qemu-project.org in documentation, version.rc, and the Windows installer
script.

The git submodules and SeaBIOS still use qemu-project.org for the time
being. This will be fixed in the QEMU 2.12 release cycle.

pc, pci, virtio: fixes, features

A bunch of fixes all over the place.
A new vmcore device - the user interface around it is still somewhat
controversial, but I feel most of the code is fine, suggestions can be
addressed by adding patches on top.

44b1ff319c migration: pre_save return int
Modify the pre_save method on VMStateDescription to return an int
rather than void so that it potentially can fail.

Changed zillions of devices to make them return 0; the only
case I've made it return non-0 is hw/intc/s390_flic_kvm.c that already
had an error_report/return case.

Note: If you add an error exit in your pre_save you must emit
an error_report to say why.

fe8fc5ae5c scsi: add multipath support to qemu-pr-helper
Proper support of persistent reservation for multipath devices requires
communication with the multipath daemon, so that the reservation is
registered and applied when a path comes up. The device mapper
utilities provide a library to do so; this patch makes qemu-pr-helper.c
detect multipath devices and, when one is found, delegate the operation
to libmpathpersist.

b855f8d175 scsi: build qemu-pr-helper
Introduce a privileged helper to run persistent reservation commands.
This lets virtual machines send persistent reservations without using
CAP_SYS_RAWIO or out-of-tree patches. The helper uses Unix permissions
and SCM_RIGHTS to restrict access to processes that can access its socket
and prove that they have an open file descriptor for a raw SCSI device.

The next patch will also correct the usage of persistent reservations
with multipath devices.

It would also be possible to support for Linux's IOC_PR_* ioctls in
the future, to support NVMe devices. For now, however, only SCSI is
supported.

7c9e527659 scsi, file-posix: add support for persistent reservation management
It is a common requirement for virtual machine to send persistent
reservations, but this currently requires either running QEMU with
CAP_SYS_RAWIO, or using out-of-tree patches that let an unprivileged
QEMU bypass Linux's filter on SG_IO commands.

As an alternative mechanism, the next patches will introduce a
privileged helper to run persistent reservation commands without
expanding QEMU's attack surface unnecessarily.

The helper is invoked through a "pr-manager" QOM object, to which
file-posix.c passes SG_IO requests for PERSISTENT RESERVE OUT and
PERSISTENT RESERVE IN commands. For example:

  $ qemu-system-x86_64
      -device virtio-scsi \
      -object pr-manager-helper,id=helper0,path=/var/run/qemu-pr-helper.sock
      -drive if=none,id=hd,driver=raw,file.filename=/dev/sdb,file.pr-manager=helper0
      -device scsi-block,drive=hd

or:

  $ qemu-system-x86_64
      -device virtio-scsi \
      -object pr-manager-helper,id=helper0,path=/var/run/qemu-pr-helper.sock
      -blockdev node-name=hd,driver=raw,file.driver=host_device,file.filename=/dev/sdb,file.pr-manager=helper0
      -device scsi-block,drive=hd

Multiple pr-manager implementations are conceivable and possible, though
only one is implemented right now. For example, a pr-manager could:

- talk directly to the multipath daemon from a privileged QEMU
  (i.e. QEMU links to libmpathpersist); this makes reservation work
  properly with multipath, but still requires CAP_SYS_RAWIO

- use the Linux IOC_PR_* ioctls (they require CAP_SYS_ADMIN though)

- more interestingly, implement reservations directly in QEMU
  through file system locks or a shared database (e.g. sqlite)

447b0d0b9e memory: avoid "resurrection" of dead FlatViews
It's possible for address_space_get_flatview() as it currently stands
to cause a use-after-free for the returned FlatView, if the reference
count is incremented after the FlatView has been replaced by a writer:

   thread 1 thread 2 RCU thread
  -------------------------------------------------------------
   rcu_read_lock
   read as->current_map
                        set as->current_map
                        flatview_unref
                           '--> call_rcu
   flatview_ref
     [ref=1]
   rcu_read_unlock
                                             flatview_destroy
   <badness>

Since FlatViews are not updated very often, we can just detect the
situation using a new atomic op atomic_fetch_inc_nonzero, similar to
Linux's atomic_inc_not_zero, which performs the refcount increment only if
it hasn't already hit zero. This is similar to Linux commit de09a9771a53
("CRED: Fix get_task_cred() and task_state() to not resurrect dead
credentials", 2010-07-29).

d87aa13803 trace: add trace_event_get_state_backends()
Code that checks dstate is unaware of SystemTap and LTTng UST dstate, so
the following trace event will not fire when solely enabled by SystemTap
or LTTng UST:

  if (trace_event_get_state(TRACE_MY_EVENT)) {
      str = g_strdup_printf("Expensive string to generate ...",
                            ...);
      trace_my_event(str);
      g_free(str);
  }

Add trace_event_get_state_backends() to fetch backend dstate. Those
backends that use QEMU dstate fetch it as part of
generate_h_backend_dstate().

Update existing trace_event_get_state() callers to use
trace_event_get_state_backends() instead.

8508eee740 live-block-ops.txt: Rename, rewrite, and improve it
This patch documents (including their QMP invocations) all the four
major kinds of live block operations:

  - `block-stream`
  - `block-commit`
  - `drive-mirror` (& `blockdev-mirror`)
  - `drive-backup` (& `blockdev-backup`)

Things considered while writing this document:

  - Use reStructuredText as markup language (with the goal of generating
    the HTML output using the Sphinx Documentation Generator). It is
    gentler on the eye, and can be trivially converted to different
    formats. (Another reason: upstream QEMU is considering to switch to
    Sphinx, which uses reStructuredText as its markup language.)

  - Raw QMP JSON output vs. 'qmp-shell'. I debated with myself whether
    to only show raw QMP JSON output (as that is the canonical
    representation), or use 'qmp-shell', which takes key-value pairs. I
    settled on the approach of: for the first occurrence of a command,
    use raw JSON; for subsequent occurrences, use 'qmp-shell', with an
    occasional exception.

  - Usage of `-blockdev` command-line.

  - Usage of 'node-name' vs. file path to refer to disks. While we have
    `blockdev-{mirror, backup}` as 'node-name'-alternatives for
    `drive-{mirror, backup}`, the `block-commit` command still operates
    on file names for parameters 'base' and 'top'. So I added a caveat
    at the beginning to that effect.

    Refer this related thread that I started (where I learnt
    `block-stream` was recently reworked to accept 'node-name' for 'top'
    and 'base' parameters):
    https://lists.nongnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2017-05/msg06466.html
    "[RFC] Making 'block-stream', and 'block-commit' accept node-name"

All commands showed in this document were tested while documenting.

Thanks: Eric Blake for the section: "A note on points-in-time vs file
names". This useful bit was originally articulated by Eric in his
KVMForum 2015 presentation, so I included that specific bit in this
document.

1d8bda128d qapi: The #optional tag is redundant, drop
We traditionally mark optional members #optional in the doc comment.
Before commit 3313b61, this was entirely manual.

Commit 3313b61 added some automation because its qapi2texi.py relied
on #optional to determine whether a member is optional. This is no
longer the case since the previous commit: the only thing qapi2texi.py
still does with #optional is stripping it out. We still reject bogus
qapi-schema.json and six places for qga/qapi-schema.json.

Thus, you can't actually rely on #optional to see whether something is
optional. Yet we still make people add it manually. That's just
busy-work.

Drop the code to check, fix up and strip out #optional, along with all
instances of #optional. To keep it out, add code to reject it, to be
dropped again once the dust settles.

No change to generated documentation.

bc52d03ff5 qapi: Make doc comments optional where we don't need them
Since we added the documentation generator in commit 3313b61, doc
comments are mandatory. That's a very good idea for a schema that

Make doc comments optional again, but add a new directive

Add test cases for the new pragma directive. While there, plug a
minor hole in includ directive test coverage.

Require documentation in the schemas we actually want documented:
qapi-schema.json and qga/qapi-schema.json.

We could probably make qapi2texi.py cope with incomplete

166d434685 mach-virt: Provide sample configuration files
These are very much like the sample configuration files
for q35, and can be used both as documentation and as
a starting point for creating your own guest.

Two sample configuration files are provided:

  * mach-virt-graphical.cfg can be used to start a
    fully-featured (USB, graphical console, etc.)
    guest that uses VirtIO devices;

  * mach-virt-serial.cfg is similar but has a minimal
    set of devices and uses the serial console.

All configuration files are fully commented and neatly

9ca019c1dd q35: Improve sample configuration files
Instead of having a single sample configuration file,
we now have several:

  * q35-emulated.cfg documents the default devices QEMU
    adds to a q35 guest and the additional devices that
    are pretty much guaranteed to be present in a
    physical q35-based machine;

  * q35-virtio-graphical.cfg can be used to start a
    fully-featured (USB, graphical console, audio, etc.)
    guest that uses VirtIO instead of emulated devices;

  * q35-virtio-serial.cfg is similar but has a minimal
    set of devices and uses the serial console.

All configuration files are fully commented and neatly

fea346f569 Makefile: Put VERSION info into version.texi rather than using -D
Unfortunately some older versions of makeinfo don't correctly
handle the -D command line option and fail to set the variable.
This then causes them to complain
 docs/qemu-ga-ref.texi:41: warning: undefined flag: VERSION

Work around this by doing as the autotools do, and writing
the information into a version.texi file which we then
include from the .texi files that need it.

a5b3ebfd23 fw-cfg: bump "x-file-slots" to 0x20 for 2.9+ machine types
More precisely, the "x-file-slots" count is bumped for all machine types
that:
(a) use fw_cfg, and
(b) are not versioned (hence migration is not expected to work for them
    across QEMU releases anyway), or have version 2.9.

This affects machine types implemented in the following source files:

- "hw/arm/virt.c". The "virt-*" machine type is versioned, and the <= 2.8
  versions already depend on HW_COMPAT_2_8 (see commit e353aac51b).
  Therefore adding the "x-file-slots" compat values to HW_COMPAT_2_8
  suffices.

- "hw/i386/pc.c". The "pc-i440fx-*" (including "pc-*") and "pc-q35-*"
  machine types are versioned. Modifying HW_COMPAT_2_8 is sufficient here
  too (see commit "pc: Add 2.9 machine-types"). The "isapc" machtype is
  not versioned. The "xenfv" machine type, which uses fw_cfg for direct
  kernel booting, is also not versioned.

- "hw/ppc/mac_newworld.c". The "mac99" machine type is not versioned.

- "hw/ppc/mac_oldworld.c". The "g3beige" machine type is not versioned.

- "hw/sparc/sun4m.c". None of the 9 machine types defined in this file
  appear versioned.

- "hw/sparc64/sun4u.c". None of the 3 machine types defined in this file
  appear versioned.

e12f3a13e2 fw-cfg: turn FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS into a device property
We'd like to raise the value of FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS. Doing it naively could
lead to problems with backward migration: a more recent QEMU (running an
older machine type) would allow the guest, in fw_cfg_select(), to select a
high key value that is unavailable in the same machine type implemented by
the older (target) QEMU. On the target host, fw_cfg_data_read() for
example could dereference nonexistent entries.

As first step, size the FWCfgState.entries[*] and FWCfgState.entry_order
arrays dynamically. All three array sizes will be influenced by the new
field FWCfgState.file_slots (and matching device property).

Make the following changes:

- Replace the FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS macro with FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS_MIN (minimum
  count of fw_cfg file slots) in the header file. The value remains 0x10.

- Replace all uses of FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS with a helper function called
  fw_cfg_file_slots(), returning the new property.

- Eliminate the macro FW_CFG_MAX_ENTRY, and replace all its uses with a
  helper function called fw_cfg_max_entry().

- In the MMIO- and IO-mapped realize functions both, allocate all three
  arrays dynamically, based on the new property.

- The new property defaults to FW_CFG_FILE_SLOTS_MIN. This is going to be
  customized in the following patches.

baf2d5bfba fw-cfg: support writeable blobs
Useful to send guest data back to QEMU.

Changes from Laszlo Ersek <lersek@redhat.com>:
- rebase the patch from Michael Tsirkin's original postings at [1] and [2]
  to the following patches:
  - loader: Allow a custom AddressSpace when loading ROMs
  - loader: Add AddressSpace loading support to uImages
  - loader: fix handling of custom address spaces when adding ROM blobs
- reject such writes immediately that would exceed the end of the array,
  rather than performing a partial write before setting the error bit: see
  the (len != dma.length) condition
- document the write interface

51dee5e465 qemu-thread: introduce QemuLockCnt
A QemuLockCnt comprises a counter and a mutex, with primitives
to increment and decrement the counter, and to take and release the
mutex. It can be used to do lock-free visits to a data structure
whenever mutexes would be too heavy-weight and the critical section
is too long for RCU.

This could be implemented simply by protecting the counter with the
mutex, but QemuLockCnt is harder to misuse and more efficient.

3313b6124b qapi: add qapi2texi script
As the name suggests, the qapi2texi script converts JSON QAPI
description into a texi file suitable for different target
formats (info/man/txt/pdf/html...).

It parses the following kind of blocks:

Free-form:

  ##
  # = Section
  # == Subsection
  #
  # Some text foo with *emphasis*
  # 1. with a list
  # 2. like that
  #
  # And some code:
  # | $ echo foo
  # | -> do this
  # | <- get that
  #
  ##

Symbol description:

  ##
  # @symbol:
  #
  # Symbol body ditto ergo sum. Foo bar
  # baz ding.
  #
  # @param1: the frob to frobnicate
  # @param2: #optional how hard to frobnicate
  #
  # Returns: the frobnicated frob.
  # If frob isn't frobnicatable, GenericError.
  #
  # Since: version
  # Notes: notes, comments can have
  #        - itemized list
  #        - like this
  #
  # Example:
  #
  # -> { "execute": "quit" }
  # <- { "return": {} }
  #
  ##

That's roughly following the following EBNF grammar:

api_comment = "##\n" comment "##\n"
comment = freeform_comment | symbol_comment
freeform_comment = { "# " text "\n" | "#\n" }
symbol_comment = "# @" name ":\n" { member | tag_section | freeform_comment }
member = "# @" name ':' [ text ] "\n" freeform_comment
tag_section = "# " ( "Returns:", "Since:", "Note:", "Notes:", "Example:", "Examples:" ) [ text ]  "\n" freeform_comment
text = free text with markup

Note that the grammar is ambiguous: a line "# @foo:\n" can be parsed
both as freeform_comment and as symbol_comment. The actual parser
recognizes symbol_comment.

See docs/qapi-code-gen.txt for more details.

Deficiencies and limitations:
- the generated QMP documentation includes internal types
- union type support is lacking
- type information is lacking in generated documentation
- doc comment error message positions are imprecise, they point
  to the beginning of the comment.
- a few minor issues, all marked TODO/FIXME in the code
