flash.h's incomplete struct pflash_t is completed both in
pflash_cfi01.c and in pflash_cfi02.c. The complete types are
incompatible. This can hide type errors, such as passing a pflash_t
created with pflash_cfi02_register() to pflash_cfi01_get_memory().
Furthermore, POSIX reserves typedef names ending with _t.
Rename the two structs to PFlashCFI01 and PFlashCFI02.

At least two machines, the PPC mac99 and MIPS fulong2e, have an ATI
gfx chip by default (Rage 128 Pro and M6/RV100 respectively) and
guests running on these and the PMON2000 firmware of the fulong2e
expect this to be available. Fortunately these are very similar chips
so they can be mostly emulated in the same device model. This patch
adds basic emulation of these ATI VGA chips.
While this is incomplete and currently only enough to run the MIPS
firmware and get framebuffer output with Linux, it allows the fulong2e
board to work more like the real hardware and having it in QEMU in
this state provides a way to experiment with it and allows others to
contribute to improve it. It is compiled for all archs but only the
fulong2e (which currently has no display output at all) is set to use
it by default (in a separate patch).

The roots of the parsing are default-configs/*.mak, Kconfig.host and
hw/Kconfig. One difference with make_device_config.sh is that all symbols
have to be defined in a Kconfig file, including those coming from the
configure script. This is the reason for the Kconfig.host file introduced
in the previous patch. Whenever a file in default-configs/*.mak used
$(...) to refer to a config-host.mak symbol, this is replaced by a
Kconfig dependency; this part must be done already in this patch
for bisectability.

The Kconfig files were generated mostly with this script:
for i in `grep -ho CONFIG_[A-Z0-9_]* default-configs/* | sort -u`; do
set fnord `git grep -lw $i -- 'hw/*/Makefile.objs' `
shift
if test $# = 1; then
cat >> $(dirname $1)/Kconfig << EOF
config ${i#CONFIG_}
bool
EOF
git add $(dirname $1)/Kconfig
else
echo $i $*
fi
done
sed -i '$d' hw/*/Kconfig
for i in hw/*; do
if test -d $i && ! test -f $i/Kconfig; then
touch $i/Kconfig
git add $i/Kconfig
fi
done
Whenever a symbol is referenced from multiple subdirectories, the
script prints the list of directories that reference the symbol.
These symbols have to be added manually to the Kconfig files.
Kconfig.host and hw/Kconfig were created manually.

With certain USB devices passed through via usb-host, a guest attempting to
reset a usb-host device can trigger a reset loop that renders the USB device
unusable. In my use case, the device was an iPhone XR that was passed through to
a Mac OS X Mojave guest. Upon connecting the device, the following happens:
1) Guest recognizes new device, sends reset to emulated USB host
2) QEMU's USB host sends reset to host kernel
3) Host kernel resets device
4) After reset, host kernel determines that some part of the device descriptor
has changed ("device firmware changed" in dmesg), so host kernel decides to
re-enumerate the device.
5) Re-enumeration causes QEMU to disconnect and reconnect the device in the
guest.
6) goto 1)

The same problem has been previously reported for an iPad:
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52617634/how-do-i-get-qemu-usb-passthrough-to-work-for-ipad-iphone
This problem can be elegantly solved by interrupting step 2) above. Instead of
passing through the reset, QEMU simply ignores it. To allow this to be
configured on a per-device level, a new parameter "no_guest_reset" is
introduced for the usb-host device. I can confirm that the configuration
described above (iPhone XS + Mojave guest) works flawlessly with
no_guest_reset=True specified.
Working command line for my scenario:
device_add usb-host,vendorid=0x05ac,productid=0x12a8,no_guest_reset=True,id=iphone

it will allow to return another hotplug handler than the default
one for a specific bus based device type. Which is needed to handle
non trivial plug/unplug sequences that need the access to resources
configured outside of bus where device is attached.
That will allow for returned hotplug handler to orchestrate wiring
in arbitrary order, by chaining other hotplug handlers when
it's needed.
PS:
It could be used for hybrid virtio-mem and virtio-pmem devices
where it will return machine as hotplug handler which will do
necessary wiring at machine level and then pass control down
the chain to bus specific hotplug handler.
Example of top level hotplug handler override and custom plug sequence:

When unplugging a device, at one point the device will be destroyed
via object_unparent(). This will, one the one hand, unrealize the
removed device hierarchy, and on the other hand, destroy/free the
device hierarchy.
When chaining hotplug handlers, we want to overwrite a bus hotplug
handler by the machine hotplug handler, to be able to perform
some part of the plug/unplug and to forward the calls to the bus hotplug
handler.
For now, the bus hotplug handler would trigger an object_unparent(), not
allowing us to perform some unplug action on a device after we forwarded
the call to the bus hotplug handler. The device would be gone at that
point.
machine_unplug_handler(dev)
/* eventually do unplug stuff */
bus_unplug_handler(dev)
/* dev is gone, we can't do more unplug stuff */
So move the object_unparent() to the original caller of the unplug. For
now, keep the unrealize() at the original places of the
object_unparent(). For implicitly chained hotplug handlers (e.g. pc
code calling acpi hotplug handlers), the object_unparent() has to be
done by the outermost caller. So when calling hotplug_handler_unplug()
from inside an unplug handler, nothing is to be done.
hotplug_handler_unplug(dev) -> calls machine_unplug_handler()
machine_unplug_handler(dev) {
/* eventually do unplug stuff */
bus_unplug_handler(dev) -> calls unrealize(dev)
/* we can do more unplug stuff but device already unrealized */
}
object_unparent(dev)
In the long run, every unplug action should be factored out of the
unrealize() function into the unplug handler (especially for PCI). Then
we can get rid of the additonal unrealize() calls and object_unparent()
will properly unrealize the device hierarchy after the device has been
unplugged.
hotplug_handler_unplug(dev) -> calls machine_unplug_handler()
machine_unplug_handler(dev) {
/* eventually do unplug stuff */
bus_unplug_handler(dev) -> only unplugs, does not unrealize
/* we can do more unplug stuff */
}
object_unparent(dev) -> will unrealize
The original approach was suggested by Igor Mammedov for the PCI
part, but I extended it to all hotplug handlers. I consider this one
step into the right direction.
To summarize:
- object_unparent() on synchronous unplugs is done by common code
-- "Caller of hotplug_handler_unplug"
- object_unparent() on asynchronous unplugs ("unplug requests") has to
be done manually
-- "Caller of hotplug_handler_unplug"

The qbus_is_full(BusState *bus) function (qdev_monitor.c) compares the max_index
value of the BusState structure with the max_dev value of the BusClass structure
to determine whether the maximum number of children has been reached for the
bus. The problem is, the max_index field of the BusState structure does not
necessarily reflect the number of devices that have been plugged into
the bus.
Whenever a child device is plugged into the bus, the bus's max_index value is
assigned to the child device and then incremented. If the child is subsequently
unplugged, the value of the max_index does not change and no longer reflects the
number of children.
When the bus's max_index value reaches the maximum number of devices
allowed for the bus (i.e., the max_dev field in the BusClass structure),
attempts to plug another device will be rejected claiming that the bus is
full -- even if the bus is actually empty.
To resolve the problem, a new 'num_children' field is being added to the
BusState structure to keep track of the number of children plugged into the
bus. It will be incremented when a child is plugged, and decremented when a
child is unplugged.

The new feature enables the virtio-balloon device to receive hints of
guest free pages from the free page vq.
A notifier is registered to the migration precopy notifier chain. The
notifier calls free_page_start after the migration thread syncs the dirty
bitmap, so that the free page optimization starts to clear bits of free
pages from the bitmap. It calls the free_page_stop before the migration
thread syncs the bitmap, which is the end of the current round of ram
save. The free_page_stop is also called to stop the optimization in the
case when there is an error occurred in the process of ram saving.
Note: balloon will report pages which were free at the time of this call.
As the reporting happens asynchronously, dirty bit logging must be
enabled before this free_page_start call is made. Guest reporting must be
disabled before the migration dirty bitmap is synchronized.

This patch implements the machine class kvm_type() callback.
It returns the number of bits requested to implement the whole GPA
range including the RAM and IO regions located beyond.
The returned value is passed though the KVM_CREATE_VM ioctl and
this allows KVM to set the stage2 tables dynamically.
To compute the highest GPA used in the memory map, kvm_type()
must freeze the memory map by calling virt_set_memmap().

Up to now the memory map has been static and the high IO region
base has always been 256GiB.
This patch modifies the virt_set_memmap() function, which freezes
the memory map, so that the high IO range base becomes floating,
located after the initial RAM and the device memory.
The function computes
- the base of the device memory,
- the size of the device memory,
- the high IO region base
- the highest GPA used in the memory map.
Entries of the high IO region are assigned a base address. The
device memory is initialized.
The highest GPA used in the memory map will be used at VM creation
to choose the requested IPA size.
Setting all the existing highmem IO regions beyond the RAM
allows to have a single contiguous RAM region (initial RAM and
possible hotpluggable device memory). That way we do not need
to do invasive changes in the EDK2 FW to support a dynamic
RAM base.
Still the user cannot request an initial RAM size greater than 255GB.

On ARM, the kvm_type will be resolved by querying the KVMState.
Let's add the MachineState handle to the callback so that we
can retrieve the KVMState handle. in kvm_init, when the callback
is called, the kvm_state variable is not yet set.

In the prospect to introduce an extended memory map supporting more
RAM, let's split the memory map array into two parts:
- the former a15memmap, renamed base_memmap, contains regions below
and including the RAM. MemMapEntries initialized in this array
have a static size and base address.
- extended_memmap, only initialized with entries located after the
RAM. MemMapEntries initialized in this array only get their size
initialized. Their base address is dynamically computed depending
on the the top of the RAM, with same alignment as their size.
Eventually base_memmap entries are copied into the extended_memmap
array. Using two separate arrays however clarifies which entries
are statically allocated and those which are dynamically allocated.
This new split will allow to grow the RAM size without changing the
description of the high IO entries.
We introduce a new virt_set_memmap() helper function which
"freezes" the memory map. We call it in machvirt_init as
memory attributes of the machine are not yet set when
virt_instance_init() gets called.
The memory map is unchanged (the top of the initial RAM still is
256GiB). Then come the high IO regions with same layout as before.

Introduces hot plug/unplug support for the vfio-ap device.
To hot plug a vfio-ap device using the QEMU device_add command:
(qemu) device_add vfio-ap,sysfsdev=$path-to-mdev
Where $path-to-mdev is the absolute path to the mediated matrix device
to which AP resources to be used by the guest have been assigned.
A vfio-ap device can be hot plugged only if:
1. A vfio-ap device has not been attached to the virtual machine's ap-bus
via the QEMU command line or a prior hot plug action.
2. The guest was started with the CPU model feature for AP enabled
(e.g., -cpu host,ap=on)
To hot unplug a vfio-ap device using the QEMU device_del command:
(qemu) device_del vfio-ap,sysfsdev=$path-to-mdev
Where $path-to-mdev is the absolute path to the mediated matrix device
specified when the vfio-ap device was attached to the virtual machine's
ap-bus.
A vfio-ap device can be hot unplugged only if:
1. A vfio-ap device has been attached to the virtual machine's ap-bus
via the QEMU command line or a prior hot plug action.
2. The guest was started with the CPU model feature for AP enabled
(e.g., -cpu host,ap=on)
Please note that a hot plug handler is not necessary for the vfio-ap device
because the AP matrix configuration for the guest is performed by the
kernel device driver when the vfio-ap device is realized. The vfio-ap device
represents a VFIO mediated device created in the host sysfs for use by a guest.
The mdev device is configured with an AP matrix (i.e., adapters and domains) via
its sysfs attribute interfaces prior to starting the guest or plugging a vfio-ap
device in. When the device is realized, a file descriptor is opened on the mdev
device which results in a callback to the vfio_ap kernel device driver. The
device driver then configures the AP matrix in the guest's SIE state description
from the AP matrix assigned via the mdev device's sysfs interfaces. The AP
devices will be created for the guest when the AP bus running on the guest
subsequently performs its periodic scan for AP devices.
The qdev_simple_device_unplug_cb() callback function is used for the same
reaons; namely, the vfio_ap kernel device driver will perform the AP resource
de-configuration for the guest when the vfio-ap device is unplugged. When the
vfio-ap device is unrealized, the mdev device file descriptor is closed which
results in a callback to the vfio_ap kernel device driver. The device driver
then clears the AP matrix configuration in the guest's SIE state description
and resets all of the affected queues. The AP devices created for the guest
will be removed when the AP bus running on the guest subsequently performs
its periodic scan and finds there are no longer any AP resources assigned to the
guest.

The locally allocated QDict-s need to be freed. ('file_layer' will be
freed implicitly since it is added as an object to 'driver_layer').
Spotted by Coverity: CID 1398649
While in the neighbourhood free 'driver' and 'filename' as soon as they are
added to the QDicts. Freeing after the 'done' label doesn't make that much
sense as, if the error path jumps to that label, the values would be NULL

At the moment the handling of init-svtor and cpuwait initial
values is split between armsse.c and iotkit-sysctl.c:
the code in armsse.c sets the initial state of the CPU
object by setting the init-svtor and start-powered-off
properties, but the iotkit-sysctl.c code has its own
code setting the reset values of its registers (which are
then used when updating the CPU when the guest makes
runtime changes).
Clean this up by making the armsse.c code set properties on the
iotkit-sysctl object to define the initial values of the
registers, so they always match the initial CPU state,
and update the comments in armsse.c accordingly.

The CPUWAIT register acts as a sort of power-control: if a bit
in it is 1 then the CPU will have been forced into waiting
when the system was reset (which in QEMU we model as the
CPU starting powered off). Writing a 0 to the register will
allow the CPU to boot (for QEMU, we model this as powering
it on). Note that writing 0 to the register does not power
off a CPU.
For this to work correctly we need to also honour the
INITSVTOR* registers, which let the guest control where the
CPU will load its SP and PC from when it comes out of reset.

The I2C block read function of pm_smbus was completely broken. It
required doing some direct I2C handling because it didn't have a
defined size, the OS code just reads bytes until it marks the
transaction finished.
This also required adjusting how the AMIBIOS workaround code worked,
the I2C block mode was setting STS_HOST_BUSY during a transaction,
so that bit could no longer be used to inform the host status read
code to start the transaction. Create a explicit bool for that
operation.
Also, don't read the next byte from the device in byte-by-byte
mode unless the OS is actually clearing the byte done bit. Just
assuming that's what the OS is doing is a bad idea.

PHB hotplug re-uses PHB device tree generation code and passes
it to a guest via RTAS. Doing this requires knowledge of where
exactly in the device tree the node describing the PHB begins.
Provide this via a new optional pointer that can be used to

To support PHB hotplug we need to clean up lingering references,
memory, child properties, etc. prior to the PHB object being
finalized. Generally this will be called as a result of calling
object_unparent() on the PHB object, which in turn would normally
be called as the result of an unplug() operation.
When the PHB is finalized, child objects will be unparented in
turn, and finalized if the PHB was the only reference holder. so
we don't bother to explicitly unparent child objects of the PHB,
with the notable exception of DRCs. This is needed to avoid a QEMU
crash when unplugging a PHB and resetting the machine before the
guest could handle the event. The DRCs are removed from the QOM tree
by pci_unregister_root_bus() and we must make sure we're not leaving
stale aliases under the global /dr-connector path.
The formula that gives the number of DMA windows is moved to an
inline function in the hw/pci-host/spapr.h header because it
will have other users.
The unrealize function is able to cope with partially realized PHBs.
It is hence used to implement proper rollback on the realize error
path.

The pseries machine only uses LSIs to support legacy PCI devices. Every
PHB claims 4 LSIs at realize time. When using in-kernel XICS (or upcoming
in-kernel XIVE), QEMU synchronizes the state of all irqs, including these
LSIs, later on at machine reset.
In order to support PHB hotplug, we need a way to tell KVM about the LSIs
that doesn't require a machine reset. An easy way to do that is to always
inform KVM when an interrupt is claimed, which really isn't a performance
path.

The current logic is to provide the FDT fragment when attaching a device
to a DRC. This works perfectly fine for our current hotplug support, but
soon we will add support for PHB hotplug which has some constraints, that
CPU, PCI and LMB devices don't seem to have.
The first constraint is that the "ibm,dma-window" property of the PHB
node requires the IOMMU to be configured, ie, spapr_tce_table_enable()
has been called, which happens during PHB reset. It is okay in the case
of hotplug since the device is reset before the hotplug handler is
called. On the contrary with coldplug, the hotplug handler is called
first and device is only reset during the initial system reset. Trying
to create the FDT fragment on the hotplug path in this case, would
result in somthing like this:
ibm,dma-window = < 0x80000000 0x00 0x00 0x00 0x00 >;
This will cause linux in the guest to panic, by simply removing and
re-adding the PHB using the drmgr command:
page = alloc_pages_node(nid, GFP_KERNEL, get_order(sz));
if (!page)
panic("iommu_init_table: Can't allocate %ld bytes\n", sz);
The second and maybe more problematic constraint is that the
"interrupt-map" property needs to reference the interrupt controller
node using the very same phandle that SLOF has already exposed to the
guest. QEMU requires SLOF to call the private KVMPPC_H_UPDATE_DT hcall
at some point to know about this phandle. With the latest QEMU and SLOF,
this happens when SLOF gets quiesced. This means that if the PHB gets
hotplugged after CAS but before SLOF quiesce, then we're sure that the
phandle is not known when the hotplug handler is called.
The FDT is only needed when the guest first invokes RTAS to configure
the connector actually, long after SLOF quiesce. Let's postpone the
creation of FDT fragments for PHBs to rtas_ibm_configure_connector().
Since we only need this for PHBs, introduce a new method in the base
DRC class for that. DRC subtypes will be converted to use it in
subsequent patches.
Allow spapr_drc_attach() to be passed a NULL fdt argument if the method
is available. When all DRC subtypes have been converted, the fdt argument
will eventually disappear.

The HW relies on LPCR:HR along with the PATE to determine whether
to use Radix or Hash mode. In fact it uses LPCR:HR more commonly
than the PATE.
For us, it's also more efficient to do so, especially since unlike
the HW we do not maintain a cache of the current PATE and HV PATE
in a generic place.
Prepare the grounds for that by ensuring that LPCR:HR is set
properly on SPAPR machines.
Another option would have been to use a callback to get the PATE
but this gets messy when implementing bare metal support, it's
much simpler (and faster) to use LPCR.
Since existing migration streams may not have it, fix it up in
spapr_post_load() as well based on the pseudo-PATE entry that
we keep.

virtio_blk_dma_restart_bh() submits new requests, so in order to make
sure that these requests are not started inside a drained section of the
attached BlockBackend, we need to make sure that draining the
BlockBackend waits for the BH to be executed.
This BH is still questionable because its scheduled in the main thread
instead of the configured iothread. Leave a FIXME comment for this.
But with this fix, enabling the data plane at least waits for these
requests (in bdrv_set_aio_context()) instead of changing the AioContext
under their feet and making them run in the wrong thread, causing
crashes and failures (e.g. due to missing locking).

The entire link status register for SR-IOV VFs is defined as RsvdZ,
reads simply return zero. Usually this is nothing more than lspci
reporting inconsequentially broken values:
LnkSta: Speed unknown, Width x0, ...
However, now that we're using the downstream endpoint link status to
fill in the value at the parent downstream port, invalid values become
a problem. In particular, the PCIe hotplug driver in Linux looks for
a valid negotiated link width and will fail to enumerate hot-added
downstream endpoints without non-zero value here, ex:
pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie004: Slot(0): Attention button pressed
pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie004: Slot(0) Powering on due to button press

pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie004: Failed to check link status
Resolve by using minimum width and speed values for the downstream
port link status when the endpoint fails to provide valid values.
Long term, we may want to implement emulation in the vfio-pci host
driver to suppliment this field with the PF value as the SR-IOV spec
seems to allow, but the solution here is compatible should that be
implemented later.

The virtio-balloon always works in units of 4kiB (BALLOON_PAGE_SIZE), but
we can only actually discard memory in units of the host page size.
Now, we handle this very badly: we silently ignore balloon requests that
aren't host page aligned, and for requests that are host page aligned we
discard the entire host page. The latter can corrupt guest memory if its
page size is smaller than the host's.
The obvious choice would be to disable the balloon if the host page size is
not 4kiB. However, that would break the special case where host and guest
have the same page size, but that's larger than 4kiB. That case currently
works by accident[1] - and is used in practice on many production POWER
systems where 64kiB has long been the Linux default page size on both host
and guest.
To make the balloon safe, without breaking that useful special case, we
need to accumulate 4kiB balloon requests until we have a whole contiguous
host page to discard.
We could in principle do that across all guest memory, but it would require
a large bitmap to track. This patch represents a compromise: we track
ballooned subpages for a single contiguous host page at a time. This means
that if the guest discards all 4kiB chunks of a host page in succession,
we will discard it. This is the expected behaviour in the (host page) ==
(guest page) != 4kiB case we want to support.
If the guest scatters 4kiB requests across different host pages, we don't
discard anything, and issue a warning. Not ideal, but at least we don't
corrupt guest memory as the previous version could.
Warning reporting is kind of a compromise here. Determining whether we're
in a problematic state at realize() time is tricky, because we'd have to
look at the host pagesizes of all memory backends, but we can't really know
if some of those backends could be for special purpose memory that's not
subject to ballooning.
Reporting only when the guest tries to balloon a partial page also isn't
great because if the guest page size happens to line up it won't indicate
that we're in a non ideal situation. It could also cause alarming repeated
warnings whenever a migration is attempted.
So, what we do is warn the first time the guest attempts balloon a partial
host page, whether or not it will end up ballooning the rest of the page
immediately afterwards.
[1] Because when the guest attempts to balloon a page, it will submit
requests for each 4kiB subpage. Most will be ignored, but the one
which happens to be host page aligned will discard the whole lot.

This patch adds the support of DISCARD and WRITE_ZEROES commands,
that have been introduced in the virtio-blk protocol to have
better performance when using SSD backend.
We support only one segment per request since multiple segments
are not widely used and there are no userspace APIs that allow
applications to submit multiple segments in a single call.

adds host_features field in the struct VirtIOBlock. (as in virtio-net)
In this way, we can avoid to add new fields for new properties and
we can directly set VIRTIO_BLK_F* flags in the host_features.

A kernel bug was introduced in v4.15 via commit 71a7d3d78e3c which
adds a test for address space wrap-around in the vfio DMA unmap path.
Unfortunately due to overflow, the kernel detects an unmap of the last
page in the 64-bit address space as a wrap-around. In QEMU, a Q35
guest with VT-d emulation and guest IOMMU enabled will attempt to make
such an unmap request during VM system reset, triggering an error:
qemu-kvm: VFIO_UNMAP_DMA: -22
qemu-kvm: vfio_dma_unmap(0x561f059948f0, 0xfef00000, 0xffffffff01100000) = -22 (Invalid argument)
Here the IOVA start address (0xfef00000) and the size parameter
(0xffffffff01100000) add to exactly 2^64, triggering the bug. A
kernel fix is queued for the Linux v5.0 release to address this.
This patch implements a workaround to retry the unmap, excluding the
final page of the range when we detect an unmap failing which matches
the requirements for this issue. This is expected to be a safe and
complete workaround as the VT-d address space does not extend to the
full 64-bit space and therefore the last page should never be mapped.
This workaround can be removed once all kernels with this bug are
sufficiently deprecated.

The region 0x40010000 .. 0x4001ffff and its secure-only alias
at 0x50010000... are for per-CPU devices. We implement this by
giving each CPU its own container memory region, where the
per-CPU devices live. Unfortunately, the alias region which
makes devices mapped at 0x4... addresses also appear at 0x5...
is only implemented in the overall "all CPUs" container. The
effect of this bug is that the CPU_IDENTITY register block appears
only at 0x4001f000, but not at the 0x5001f000 alias where it should
also appear. Guests (like very recent Arm Trusted Firmware-M)
which try to access it at 0x5001f000 will crash.
Fix this by moving the handling for this alias from the "all CPUs"
container to the per-CPU container. (We leave the aliases for
0x1... and 0x3... in the overall container, because there are
no per-CPU devices there.)

is that if there is nothing connected to the port's downstream
then it does not create the sysbus MMIO region for the upstream

an unused port in the middle of the range: since sysbus MMIO
regions are implicitly consecutively allocated, any used ports
above the unused ones end up with sysbus MMIO region numbers
that don't match the port number.
Avoid this numbering mismatch by creating dummy MMIO regions

Currently, virtio-balloon uses madvise() with MADV_DONTNEED to actually
discard RAM pages inserted into the balloon. This is basically a Linux
only interface (MADV_DONTNEED exists on some other platforms, but doesn't
always have the same semantics). It also doesn't work on hugepages and has
some other limitations.
It turns out that postcopy also needs to discard chunks of memory, and uses
a better interface for it: ram_block_discard_range(). It doesn't cover
every case, but it covers more than going direct to madvise() and this
gives us a single place to update for more possibilities in future.
There are some subtleties here to maintain the current balloon behaviour:
* For now, we just ignore requests to balloon in a hugepage backed region.
That matches current behaviour, because MADV_DONTNEED on a hugepage would
simply fail, and we ignore the error.
* If host page size is > BALLOON_PAGE_SIZE we can frequently call this on
non-host-page-aligned addresses. These would also fail in madvise(),
which we then ignored. ram_block_discard_range() error_report()s calls
on unaligned addresses, so we explicitly check that case to avoid
spamming the logs.
* We now call ram_block_discard_range() with the *host* page size, whereas
we previously called madvise() with BALLOON_PAGE_SIZE. Surprisingly,
this also matches existing behaviour. Although the kernel fails madvise
on unaligned addresses, it will round unaligned sizes *up* to the host
page size. Yes, this means that if BALLOON_PAGE_SIZE < guest page size
we can incorrectly discard more memory than the guest asked us to. I'm
planning to address that soon.
Errors other than the ones discussed above, will now be reported by
ram_block_discard_range(), rather than silently ignored, which means we
have a much better chance of seeing when something is going wrong.

The virtio-balloon device's verification of the address given to it by the
guest has a number of faults:
* The addresses here are guest physical addresses, which should be
'hwaddr' rather than 'ram_addr_t' (the distinction is admittedly
pretty subtle and confusing)
* We don't check for section.mr being NULL, which is the main way that
memory_region_find() reports basic failures. We really need to check
that before looking at any other section fields, because
memory_region_find() doesn't initialize them on the failure path
* We're passing a length of '1' to memory_region_find(), but really the
guest is requesting that we put the entire page into the balloon,
so it makes more sense to call it with BALLOON_PAGE_SIZE

When the balloon is inflated, we discard memory place in it using madvise()
with MADV_DONTNEED. And when we deflate it we use MADV_WILLNEED, which
sounds like it makes sense but is actually unnecessary.
The misleadingly named MADV_DONTNEED just discards the memory in question,
it doesn't set any persistent state on it in-kernel; all that's necessary
to bring the memory back is to touch it. MADV_WILLNEED in contrast
specifically says that the memory will be used soon and faults it in.
This patch simplify's the balloon operation by dropping the madvise()
on deflate. This might have an impact on performance - it will move a
delay at deflate time until that memory is actually touched, which
might be more latency sensitive. However:
* Memory that's being given back to the guest by deflating the
balloon *might* be used soon, but it equally could just sit around
in the guest's pools until needed (or even be faulted out again if
the host is under memory pressure).
* Usually, the timescale over which you'll be adjusting the balloon
is long enough that a few extra faults after deflation aren't
going to make a difference.

vhost-kernel to Linux in hw/virtio/vhost-backend.c, everything else can be
compiled on all POSIX systems.

hw/net/vhost_net.c needs functions that are declared in net/vhost-user.c: the
vhost-user code is always compiled into QEMU, only the constructor
net_init_vhost_user is unreachable. Also, net/vhost-user.c needs functions
declared in hw/virtio/vhost-stub.c even if no virtio device exists.
Break this dependency. First, add a minimal version of net/vhost-user.c,
with no functionality and no dependency on vhost code. Second, #ifdef out
the calls back to net/vhost-user.c from hw/net/vhost_net.c.
While at it, this patch fixes the CONFIG_VHOST_NET_USE*D* typo.

There is no reason for CONFIG_VHOST_NET to be specific to a single target;
it is a host feature that can be add to all targets, as long as they support
the virtio-net device. Currently CONFIG_VHOST_NET depends on CONFIG_KVM,
but ioeventfd support is present in the core memory API and works with
other accelerators as well.
As a first step, move the vhost-net stubs to a separate file. Later, they
will become conditional on CONFIG_VIRTIO_NET, which is not available in .c
files.

Calls the new SPICE QXL interface function spice_qxl_set_device_info to
set the hardware address of the graphics device represented by the QXL
interface (e.g. a PCI path) and the device display IDs (the IDs of the
device's monitors that belong to this QXL interface).
Also stops using the deprecated spice_qxl_set_max_monitors, the new
interface function replaces it.

No caller of usb_ep_get() calls it with a NULL device (previous commits
have addressed the few remaining cases which didn't explicitly check).
Replace check for 'dev == NULL' with an assert instead.

if it doesn't find a device matching 'addr' so explicitly check
the return value before passing it to usb_ep_get(). This then

Most callers of xhci_port_update() and xhci_wakeup() pass in a pointer
to an array entry and can never be NULL but add two defensive asserts
to protect against future changes (e.g. adding a new port speed, etc.)
adding a path through xhci_lookup_port() that could result in the
return of a NULL XHCIPort.

if 'ep' is the control endpoint. Instead the calculation should
