063961af2f gcc bitches about unused variables, but we don't want to turn off this 
warning globally, only for specific variables. This adds a compiler-specific
define to use for this purpose.

f6d67bd985 change DEBUG_TRACK_ALLOCATIONS to DBG_TRACK_ALLOCATIONS. This prevents
