a50f9555a8 * re-added the broken bsd-version of strtod.c, as our kernel depends on strtod,
too, and I do not dare to add a glibc-based source to our kernel.
This means that our kernel will have to live with strod() yielding
inaccurate results, but since the only use I have found was for fs-queries,
I think we can cope for now.
* added a comment to the top of strtod.c that explains the current state.

8ae594ffd4 * Introduced dedicated syscalls for the deprecated BeOS fs_attr API. Before,
each attribute access needed 3 syscalls, now only one as it should.
* Renamed the new Haiku call fs_open_attr() to fs_fopen_attr(), and added a new
function fs_open_attr() that takes a path (same semantics as the
fs_[f]open_attr_dir() functions already present in BeOS).
* Merged former _kern_open_attr(), and _kern_create_attr() into one syscall.
* Cleaned up vfs.h.

181593ba0b * Properly document why fs_write_attr() does what it does.
* As even the author of fs_attr.c was trying to use fs_write_attr() in an
unsupported way in the cp copy_attributes() implementation, try to be
more forgiving and support writing attributes at an offset. The method is
required to behave inconsistent in that replacing bytes at offset 0 is
not supported as replacing bytes at any other offset. Writing at offset 0
will clobber the existing attribute to stay compatible with BeOS.

NOTE: BFS itself still does not support writing attributes at an offset which
are withing the "small data section". To work around this problem, programs
which copy attributes in a loop must make sure that their buffer is large
enough that such "small data section" attributes require only one loop
iteration.

3609af391d * Renamed _kern_reserve_heap_address_range() to _kern_reserve_address_range(),
and added a _kern_unreserve_address_range() as well.

to make sure there is enough space left for all areas of a single image.
* This also fixes the final part of bug #4008.
* Minor cleanup.

78176019e6 * squashed a TODO in parsedate() about missing timezones - now both textual

bcfe344c53 * Made our struct stat POSIX compliant again -- the time_t fields have been
replaced by timespec fields. Via macros the structure is still source
  compatible with the old one.
* Introduced header <compat/sys/stat.h> that defines the old stat structure
  (as stat_beos) and conversion functions
* Introduced versions for [l,f]stat().
* Added symbol versions for BDirectory::GetStatFor() for sake of binary
  compatibility.
* BStatable::GetStat(): Renamed the old method, changed its parameter to
stat_beos*, and and made it private. Added a new version (using up a
reserved vtable slot). It remains source and binary compatible.
* BRefFilter::Filter(): Changed the struct stat* parameter to struct stat_beos*
for sake of binary compatibility. This breaks source compatibility, though,
which we can't help, since the class doesn't have reserved vtable slots.
* Fixed several issues with the stat structure change, mostly adjusted uses of
  BRefFilter.

317bd7dda3 * Changed directory structure as suggested on the mailing list.
* Made the TimeZoneView less error prone, and also actually use Haiku code (the
previous check didn't work since it used #if, not #ifdef).
* Also took the liberty to rename our boot loader to haiku_loader, since I had
to update the nasm binary anyway. Updated the assembly sources to nasm 2.0.
* I haven't found where the synth location in the MIDI code is specified,
  though.
* Also, NetBootArchive, and FloppyBootImage haven't been updated yet. Will do
  so next.
* Some optional packages still put their license to beos/etc/licenses. I didn't
update them yet, as we'll probably do so anyway at some point. Also, I think
we might want to introduce a common/data/licenses instead for those.
* If you encounter any problems, please tell!

39d58e2f49 Experimental approach to tackle the problem with Be's negative error codes and
ported software:
* If the macro B_USE_POSITIVE_POSIX_ERRORS is defined the POSIX error code
constants (ENOMEM, EINTR,...) will have positive values.
* Introduced the macros B_TO_{POSITIVE,NEGATIVE}_ERROR() which do convert a
given error code to a positive/negative value.
* Added static library libposix_error_mapper.a that overrides all POSIX
functions (save the ones I forgot to add :-)) directly meddling with error
codes (having them as parameter or returning them) dealing with the
positive<->negative error code conversions. The functions have hidden
visibility, so they affect only the shared object they are linked into.
* So ideally all one has to do is to build a ported software with
-DB_USE_POSITIVE_POSIX_ERRORS and -lposix_error_mapper and be good with
  respect to error code problems.
* Potential issues:
  - When mixing ported and Haiku native code, i.e. using Haiku native code in
a ported software or using a ported library in a Haiku native application
care must be taken to convert error codes where the two interface. That's
what the B_TO_{POSITIVE,NEGATIVE}_ERROR() macros are supposed to be used
    for.
  - A ported static library can obviously not be linked directly against
-lposix_error_mapper. The shared object linking a against the ported static
library has to do that. The previous point applies when that causes mixing
    with Haiku native code.
  - When dependent ported libraries are used probably all of them should use
    the error mapping.

Comments welcome.

b898cc3709 solved build dependency puzzle in regex.c:
* removed superfluous #include <config.h> which was protected by an #ifdef
that evaluated to false - so the file never got included, but jam tried
to locate it and usually failed, unless there happens to be a config.h
  in the current working directory.
This fixes a spurious dependency from regex.c to the config.h in
src/libs/iconv.h if you invoked jam from there.
* fixed two warnings by always including stdlib.h

0c85bd054e * Reworked undefined symbol resolution in the runtime loader. Got rid of
the per-root-image breadth-first sorted image array. Instead we have a
per-image hook function to resolve the symbols. The default function
uses the sLoadedImages list directly, which is breadth-first sorted
anyway. There's also a BeOS function for old-style symbol resolution
and one for add-ons, which lacks a proper implementation yet (just
  uses old-style ATM).
* Made the dl*() functions POSIX compliant:
  - dlopen() does no longer use load_add_on(), but loads the object as a
library. It also properly supports a NULL name, now -- the previous
"_APP_" work-around did only work, if this soname was set on the
program (unlikely for programs using this API).
  - Implemented RTLD_{GLOBAL,LOCAL}.
  - dlsym() looks up symbols properly now, i.e. not just in the given
image, but breadth-first for an actual image or in load order for
the global scope. It also supports the not-quite POSIX RTLD_DEFAULT
and RTLD_NEXT extensions. Our RTLD_NEXT finds more symbols than in
Linux (also in later dlopen()ed libraries), but that should be fine.

f73283cf6a When opening mails with slightly larger attachements in Beam, I noticed that
it was quite sluggish. When opening larger mails, like a 1.14 MB mail for
example, it could take almost half a minute until it was displayed. It turned
out that the offending thread was in strstr().
This is an implementation taken from Wikipedia (declared as public domain
there), which makes the mails open instantly. This usecase may have represented
a worst-case scenario for the previous implementation. It may be beneficial to
take a look at more of these string functions, but I am happy for now.

2716cfd3d7 * Threw away the broken stat() vs. _stat() mechanism to allow for more fields
in struct stat.
* Instead, I followed Marcus' great idea and added a compatibility check in
the runtime loader: now, R5 binaries (also shared libraries) are detected,
and they get special versions for stat(), fstat(), and lstat() that return
  the smaller stat struct.
* However, I've disabled (in src/system/libroot/posix/sys/stat.c) using the
larger stat field for now, as this breaks some of our optional packages.
So until we rebuild them all, this shouldn't be enabled.
* This should now also be used for BeOS compatibility in libnetwork.so.

* renamed xsi_do_undo() to xsi_sem_undo() (there is more to XSI than sems).
* Fixed coding style issues in sys/sem.h and xsi_sem.cpp.
* Added _kern_*() syscall prototypes to syscalls.h.
* Added a TODO in xsi_sem.cpp and xsi_semaphore.h about moving union semun to
  a shared header.
* Made the team::xsi_sem_undo_requests int32 - due to padding, it would have
needed 4 bytes anyway; please always use specific types over int/short/long.
* xsi_sem_undo() now checks if it needs to do anything - the calls in team.cpp
no longer needs to do this.

2965c99fea * Changed the _kern_exec() and _kern_load_image() syscalls. They expect
a flattened argument/environment buffer now. This simplifies the work
for the kernel a bit, since it can just copy the buffer and check

The runtime loader also gets a flattened array.
* Set the maximum size of the arguments/environment buffer to 128 KB.
When more arguments are passed, we fail with a proper error code
(instead of just truncating the arguments as before).
* On exec*() the first argument was silently replaced by the given path

* Made the pthread_cond_t internals public. This is necessary to support

* Made the pthread_rwlockattr_t structure opaque.

  internal _pthread_thread structure.
* Removed __get_pthread(). pthread_self() can be used instead.
* No longer tunnel the pthread exit value through Haiku's thread exit
value. We do have a separate field in the _pthread_thread structure
  for it, now.
* Handle detaching of threads correctly.
* pthread_rwlockattr_{g,s}etpshared() use the

6b202f4e3d * Introduced new header directory headers/private/system which is supposed
to contain headers shared by kernel and userland (mainly libroot).
* Moved quite a few private kernel headers to the new location. Split
several kernel headers into a shared part and one that is still kernel
private. Adjusted all affected Jamfiles and source in the standard x86
build accordingly. The build for other architectures and for test code
  may be broken.
* Quite a bit of userland code still includes private kernel headers.
Mostly those are <util/*> headers. The ones that aren't strictly
kernel-only should be moved to some other place (maybe
  headers/private/shared/util).

3dfe682f55 * Added some padding to the sem_t structure.
* Changed the semantics of unnamed semaphores. Before parent and child
of a fork() would always share an earlier created semaphore. Now we do
that only, if the "shared" parameter of sem_init() was true. That's
still not quite the behavior Linux and Solaris have, but should be
perfectly fine with how reasonable code would use the API.
* There's a global table for shared unnamed semaphores now. ATM a
semaphore is leaked when no one explicitly destroys it (just as with
  named sems).
* Enforce per-team and global semaphore number limits.

3cf7ecd1e4 * Added <sys/mman.h> header. It declares only mmap() and munmap() yet
and defines the macros needed by them.
* Renamed syscall sys_vm_map_file() to _kern_map_file() and changed the

adjusted the kernel ELF loader and the runtime loader.
* Added syscall _kern_unmap_memory().
* Added bool unmapAddressRange parameter to vm_create_anonymous_area()
and map_backing_store(). If true and the address specification is
B_EXACT_ADDRESS, all areas in the specified address range will be
deleted (unless an area is covered only partially).
* Introduced B_SHARED_AREA flag, which is set on areas that have been
created by {vm,_user}_map_file() with REGION_NO_PRIVATE_MAP. When
fork()ing those areas won't be copied CoW, but rather be cloned. This
  is needed for mmap() MAP_SHARED.
* {vm,_user}_map_file() also accept an FD argument < 0, in which case an
  anonymous area is created.
* Implemented mmap() and munmap(). Currently there's the restriction
that we can't partially unmap areas. Otherwise the functions should be
rather compliant. We also support the non-POSIX extension
  MAP_ANONYMOUS.

7ffafac8d7 * Reorganized the FS interface a little:
- Moved most file_system_module_info hooks into separate structures.
Those that operate on mounted volumes to fs_volume_ops, those
operating on a vnode to fs_vnode_ops.
  - Got rid of the fs_volume, fs_cookie, fs_vnode typedefs. We use void*
    again.
  - Instead of a void* volume and node cookie hooks are passed a
fs_volume and fs_vnode structure pointer, which contain the cookie
and an ops pointer (fs_volume a few more things).
  - The VFS {new,publish,get,...}_vnode() functions take a fs_volume*
instead of the volume ID. So does vfs_get_fs_node_from_path().
  - Added type and flags arguments to publish_vnode() and the
get_vnode() hook and removed the type argument from lookup() hook.
Added vnode::type using formerly unused bits to store the node type.
Simplified a few things in the VFS due to the now always available
    node type.
  - Added fs_volume_ops::{create,delete}_sub_vnode() and
fs_vnode_ops::get_super_vnode() hooks. They are used to support file
system layers, e.g. allowing to extend an FS not supporting BeOS
attribute with attribute support. Needs some more work in the VFS.
  - Added fs_vnode_ops::create_special_node() hook for creating special
    nodes (e.g. FIFOs).
* Adjusted the built-in file systems and BFS according to the interface
changes. Removed all other FSs from the image for the time being.
We'll see whether further API changes are necessary before porting
  them.
* Adjusted the bfs_shell accordingly.
* Implemented create_special_node() in rootfs to support special nodes.
* Added support for FIFOs:
  - Added syscall _kern_create_fifo() (used by mkfifo()), which creates
a special node (type S_IFIFO) in the respective file system.
  - When a special node is published the VFS creates a respective sub
node. Currently only FIFOs are supported.
  - Added a little support for FIFO subnodes by using functionality from
    the pipefs.
  - Added mkfifo to the image. It can create FIFOs in the rootfs, but
the FIFOs aren't really usable ATM, since they still work like
pipes, i.e. readers and writers need to have them open at the same
    time.
* Some smaller changes in the VFS:
  - Made the *_CALL macros nicer to use (vargs).
  - Refactored FS entry lookup into new function lookup_dir_entry().
  - create_vnode() no longer just calls the FS create() hook. First it
looks up the entry and uses open_vnode(), if it already exists. This
is necessary for two reasons: 1) The FS might not support create()
while still allowing to open() entries. 2) When the FS has other
layers on to of it (or the respective node) it might not be
    responsible for opening the node.

360be1fc45 * Implemented support for chroot:
- Added a "root" vnode to the io_context. It is used for resolving
paths and converting nodes to paths instead of sRoot. Some more
passing around of io_context structures was necessary.
  - Introduced a new lock sIOContextRootLock to protect
io_context::root. The current uses of io_context::io_mutex
(put_vnode(), remove_vnode() while holding it) looked too suspicious
to use that mutex in vnode_path_to_vnode().
  - Added _kern_change_root() syscall and chroot() libroot function.
  - Added chroot coreutils program to the image. Funnily it seems to be
much easier to set up a little jail than under Linux (just copy
bash and libroot.so into respective subdirs; mount another pipefs
    if you want pipe support).
With Haiku allowing direct access to directories via inode IDs
jailing is obviously not very secure at the moment.
  - Added /var/empty to the image. It will be the chroot target for ssh.
* Changed vfs.cpp:get_cwd() so that the io_context::io_mutex is no
  longer held when calling dir_vnode_to_path().

290946ce80 * Implemented some basics for supplementary groups support:
- The kernel stores the group IDs in the team structure. They are
correctly inherited on fork() and load_image_etc().
  - Implemented getgroups() for real, i.e. it retrieves the groups
    associated with the process.
  - Implemented setgroups(), initgroups() and (the BSDish)
getgrouplist(). The latter two read the group information from the
    "group database" /etc/group (if existing).
  - Change the BIND port config, since we do have getgrouplist() now.
* The set-uid feature was broken when the path to the executable was
relative, since we used stat(), which, in the kernel, uses the kernel
  IO context.

071f9c3aa2 Build configurations shouldn't be done in svn controlled files, so I
finally created a solution to avoid that: Header files that contain
configuration settings (and nothing else) go to build/config_headers.
To change settings, create a directory build/user_config_headers (which
is ignored by svn), copy the respective header there and modify it at
your leisure. Currently only tracing_config.h has been moved to the new
location, but more files will follow eventually. It is also recommended
to move optional macro definitions in Jamfile (as for BFS) to a config
header instead; the build system will then automatically rebuild on
changes.

1b32947d3f * Aligned the semantics of the read_symlink() FS module hook with the
readlink() function. It is no longer required to null-terminate the
string, shall not fail, if the buffer is too small, and shall return
the length of the string actually written into the buffer.
* Adjusted rootfs, devfs, and bfs accordingly. Also adjusted their
read_stat() hooks to return the correct symlink length in st_size.
* Our readlink() does now comply to the standard (and BeOS).
Additionally if the buffer is big enough it is nice to non-conforming
  apps and null-terminates it.
* BSymLink::ReadLink() explicitly null-terminates the string now.

BeOS R5's glue code incorrectly calls _thread_do_exit_notification()
when main() returns, while Haiku does that in exit(). Therefore when
terminating this way the exit hooks were called twice for executables
built under BeOS R5. This caused e.g. NetPositive or the R5 svn to
crash on exit (our network code actually uses those hooks).

As (our) gcc unfortunately uses atexit() to clean up lazily initialized static
variables inside functions we have to ensure that we do the right thing with
unloadable shared objects. In case a shared object was unloaded that installed
an atexit() hook the application would crash on exit. We now implement a
callback into libroot that is used to call all the atexit() hooks of a
component that is to be unloaded. Most prominently this fixes the media_server
crash at shutdown.

34b3b26b3b Merged branch haiku/branches/developer/bonefish/optimization revision
23139 into trunk, with roughly the following changes (for details svn
log the branch):
* The int 99 syscall handler is now fully in assembly.
* Added a sysenter/sysexit handler and use it on Pentiums that support
  it (via commpage).
* Got rid of i386_handle_trap(). A bit of functionality was moved into
the assembly handler which now uses a jump table to call C functions
  handling the respective interrupt.
* Some optimizations to get user debugger support code out of the
  interrupt handling path.
* Introduced a thread::flags fields which allows to skip handling of
rare events (signals, user debug enabling/disabling) on the
  common interrupt handling path.
* Got rid of the explicit iframe stack. The iframes can still be
retrieved by iterating through the stack frames.
* Made the commpage an architecture independent feature. It's used for
the real time data stuff (instead of creating a separate area).
* The x86 CPU modules can now provide processor optimized versions for
common functions (currently memcpy() only). They are used in the
kernel and are provided to the userland via commpage entries.
* Introduced build system feature allowing easy use of C structure
  member offsets in assembly code.

Changes after merging:
* Fixed merge conflict in src/system/kernel/arch/x86/arch_debug.cpp
(caused by refactoring and introduction of "call" debugger command).
