d8efc6caf6 Changes to kernel_args to make it identical for x86 and x86_64.
* Added a FixedWidthPointer template class which uses 64-bit storage to hold
a pointer. This is used in place of raw pointers in kernel_args.
* Added __attribute__((packed)) to kernel_args and all structures contained
within it. This is necessary due to different alignment behaviour for
32-bit and 64-bit compilation with GCC.
* With these changes, kernel_args will now come out the same size for both
the x86_64 kernel and the loader, excluding the preloaded_image structure
which has not yet been changed.
* Tested both an x86 GCC2 and GCC4 build, no problems caused by these changes.

192af9e0af Changed addr_range to use uint64.
I've tested this change on x86, causing no issues. I've checked over the code
for all other platforms and made the necessary changes and to the best of my
knowledge they should also still work, but I haven't actually built and
tested them. Once I've completed the kernel_args changes the other platforms
will need testing.

93cb9538be Don't store a KMessage in kernel_args for the boot volume, only the buffer address/size.
Pointers in kernel_args are going to be changed to unconditionally use 64-bit
storage (to make kernel_args compatible with both the x86 and x86_64 kernels).
KMessage stores a pointer to its buffer, however since KMessage is used
outside of the boot code it is undesirable to change it to use 64-bit storage
for the pointer as it may add additional overhead on 32-bit builds. Therefore,
only store the buffer address and size and then construct a KMessage from
those in the kernel.

65ad1ba320 Made it possible to build the bootloader when targetting x86_64.
* x86_64 is using the existing *_ia32 boot platforms.
* Special flags are required when compiling the loader to get GCC to compile
32-bit code. This adds a new set of rules for compiling boot code rather
than using the kernel rules, which compile using the necessary flags.
* Some x86_64 private headers have been stubbed by #include'ing the x86
versions. These will be replaced later.

d230708bcf * Expand kernel_args addresses ranges size, 8 is somewhat too small, leading
to a panic at boot.
* Make the panic message more explicit when there is no more room left.

This should hopefully fix #7869.

    message.

cbc85916fb Add boot loader packagefs support
* Add pread().
* Add Node::ReadLink() to read a symbolic link path.
* Add Directory::LookupDontTraverse() and make Lookup() non-abstract.
Lookup() is implemented via LookupDontTraverse() and Node::ReadLink().
* Adjust all FS implementations accordingly.
* Add a packagefs implementation. Unlike other FS implementations it
  isn't a pseudo-module, but provides a function to explicitly mount a
  package file (packagefs_mount_file()).
* Finish BootVolume::SetTo() implementation, mounting the package file
  and replacing fSystemDirectory.

Now the boot loader can load the kernel and boot modules from a packaged
system. The kernel boots up to the point where the boot volume is
mounted.

d11ea2b5ed Introduce BootVolume abstraction class
BootVolume is initialized from a root directory of a volume. It finds
the system directory, and -- not implemented yet -- mounts the system
package, if the system is packaged, replacing the system directory with
it. Adjusted several functionality (main(), the loader functions,
user_menu()) to use BootVolume instead of the root directory.

5e78920c12 * Added platform_debug_get_log_buffer() which returns the debug log buffer and
its size.
* Added "Display current boot loader log" item to the "Debug Options" boot
loader menu. It displays what the boot loader has logged so far. Might be
interesting for early boot issues when serial debugging is not possible.

8837310ce7 * Slightly alter the semantics of the input gathering function to take the
menu item it's associated with rather than an input string. This allows it
to calculate the position to start the input at, as well as the correct
line to place it on. The previous solution always put the input at the
center line, which happened to be the right place by happy coincidence
unless one also had the menu items for viewing/saving the debug syslog
  present.
* Implement input buffer scrolling, and consequently lift the previous size
limit on user input (it is now only limited by the size of the passed in
  buffer).
* Implement parsing of the input buffer to allow it to handle comma-separated
options. Thus, one can now input things like "disable_smp true, serial_debug_output false"
and it will be handled properly.

d2b49a0031 * Implement support for user input of additional safe mode options that
aren't otherwise exposed via the safe mode menus. The option can be
found under the debug options menu, where additional settings can be
added one at a time with the same syntax used in kernel settings files
(i.e. disable_acpi on).

Scrolling of the input buffer is not yet supported (will implement that
soon), so currently the input is clamped to the size of one line. This
shouldn't be a problem for our current set of options though.

While this should allows larger logo/icons, it doesn't remove the

b7e825d6e7 boot_net: Add TCP support
Modelled after UDP, add limited TCP support to the boot net stack. The socket
works by queuing received packets as well as sent packets that have not yet
been ACK'ed. Some known issues are documented, especially there's only limited
congestion control. I.e., we send immediately and in unlimited quantity, thus
its use should be restricted to local networks, and due to a fixed window size
there is potential for our socket being overrun with data packets before they
are read. Some corner cases like wrapping sequence numbers may cause a timeout.

The TCP implementation is based on Andrew S. Tanenbaum's "Computer Networks",
4th ed., as well as lecture notes from Prof. W. Effelsberg, the relevant RFCs
and Wikipedia. The pseudo-random number Galois LFSR used for the sequence
number was suggested by Endre Varga.

Since the code is unlikely to get much smaller, better merge it now so that
subsequent changes get easier to review. No platform actively uses TCP sockets
yet, and the receiving code has been reviewed for endianness issues and should
terminate okay after verifying the checksum if no sockets are open.
Based on a version tested with custom code (#5240) as well as with iSCSI.
Compile-tested boot_loader_openfirmware, pxehaiku-loader with gcc4 and
haiku_loader with gcc2. Closes ticket #5240.

Changes from #5240 proposed patch:
* Various bug fixes related to queuing, some memory leaks fixed.
* Never bump the sequence number when dequeuing a packet. It's done afterwards.
* Don't bump the sequence number again when resending the queue or ACK'ing.
* Aggressively ACK while waiting for packets.
* Don't queue sent ACK-only packets.
* More trace output, esp. for queue inspection.
* Adapted use of TCP header flags to r38434.

28a2172c3f kernel:
* The kernel syslog ring buffer is no longer emptied by the syslog sender
thread. Instead we only drop the oldest data from the buffer when we're
writing to it and there's not enough free space in it.
Advantages: We drop old data rather than the most recent data when the buffer
is full. The "syslog" KDL command has more data available now. So the odds
are that kernel syslog messages not written to disk yet are at least still
  in the kernel buffer.
* Changed dprintf_no_syslog() semantics: Now it writes to the syslog, but
doesn't notify the syslog sender thread.

boot loader:
* Added the ring_buffer implementation and a dummy user_memcpy().
* bios_x86: Moved the syslog stuff from serial.{cpp,h} to debug.{cpp.h}.
* Moved the debug options from the "Select safe mode options" menu to a new
  "Select debug options" menu.
* Added option "Enable debug syslog" to the new menu (ATM available on x86
only). It allocates a 1 MB in-memory buffer for the syslog for this session
in such a way that it can be accessed by the boot loader after a reset.
* Added item "Display syslog from previous session" to the new menu, doing
  what its name suggests.

d40a935560 Boot loader (x86 mmu.cpp):
* Made the page table allocation more flexible. Got rid of sMaxVirtualAddress
and added new virtual_end address to the architecture specific kernel args.
* Increased the virtual space we reserve for the kernel to 16 MB. That
should suffice for quite a while. The previous 2 MB were too tight when
building the kernel with debug info.
* mmu_init(): The way we were translating the BIOS' extended memory map to
our physical ranges arrays was broken. Small gaps between usable memory
ranges would be ignored and instead marked allocated. This worked fine for
the boot loader and during the early kernel initialization, but after the
VM has been fully set up it frees all physical ranges that have not been
claimed otherwise. So those ranges could be entered into the free pages
list and would be used later. This could possibly cause all kinds of weird
problems, probably including ACPI issues. Now we add only the actually
  usable ranges to our list.

Kernel:
* vm_page_init(): The pages of the ranges between the usable physical memory
ranges are now marked PAGE_STATE_UNUSED, the allocated ranges

bb693d7764 * Added VESA capabilities field to the kernel args.
* The vesa driver no longer uses VGA programming if the chip does not support
  VGA compatibility.
* The VESA driver now tries to set the DAC to 8 bits per color gun.
* In VESA modes, the driver no longer tries to use VGA programming; introduced
the new vesa_set_indexed_colors() that is now used for palette programming.
This should fix wrong colors of 8 bit BWindowScreen users with VESA on real
hardware (emulators usually didn't mind either way).
* Note that the app_server needs to maintain a palette per 8 bit screen, as

56c6c0fefb - introduced an "argumetns" field in stage2_args to hold command line args from chaining loader,
- added some multiboot support code:
	- dump some of the passed info,
	- parse command line (skip the 'kernel' name and pass the rest to stage2_args.arguments),
- added an add_stage2_driver_settings() function which takes stage2_args.arguments and translates it into safe mode driver settings, a bit dumb for now.
This allows using qemu -kernel haiku_loader -append 'debug_screen true' and get debug output without having to enter the menu (once multiboot info is used to determine the boot device too).
The idea is to allow passing driver settings and using them to pass extra stuff (like 'force_keymap fr' and other stuff for demo), and to help automate tests ('run_test /bin/sometest').
This should answer Axel's question :)

9e8dc2a9bb [Sorry, couldn't split this one up any further.]
* Images preloaded by the boot loader had to be modules to be of any use
to the kernel. Extended the mechanism so that any images not accepted
by the module code would later be tried to be added as drivers by the
devfs. This is a little hacky ATM, since the devfs manages the drivers
using a hash map keyed by the drivers inode ID, which those drivers
  obviously don't have.
* The devfs emulates read_pages() using read(), if the device driver
doesn't implement the former (all old-style drivers), thus making it
possible to BFS, which uses the file cache which in turn requires
read_pages(), on the device. write_pages() emulation is still missing.
* Replaced the kernel_args::boot_disk structure by a KMessage, which can
more flexibly be extended and deals more gracefully with
arbitrarily-size data. The disk_identifier structure still exists,
though. It is added as message field in cases where needed (non net
boot). Moved the boot_drive_number field of the bios_ia32 platform
  specific args into the message.
* Made the stage 1 PXE boot loader superfluous. Moved the relevant
initialization code into the stage 2 loader, which can now be loaded
  directly via PXE.
* The PXE boot loader does now download a boot tgz archive via TFTP. It
does no longer use the RemoteDisk protocol (it could actually be
removed from the boot loader). It also parses the DHCP options in the
DHCPACK packet provided by PXE and extracts the root path to be
  mounted by the kernel.
* Reorganized the boot volume search in the kernel (vfs_boot.cpp) and
added support for network boot. In this case the net stack is
initialized and the network interface the boot loader used is brought
up and configured. Since NBD and RemoteDisk are our only options for
net boot (and those aren't really configurable dynamically) ATM, the
the boot device is found automatically by the disk device manager.

Booting via PXE does work to some degree now. The most grievous problem
is that loading certain drivers or kernel modules (or related activity)
causes a reboot (likely a triple fault, though one wonders where our
double fault handler is on vacation). Namely the keyboard and mouse input
server add-ons need to be deactivated as well as the media server.
A smaller problem is the net server, which apparently tries to
(re-)configure the network interface we're using to boot, which
obviously doesn't work out that well. So, if all this stuff is disabled
Haiku does fully boot, when using the RemoteDisk protocol (not being
able to use keyboard or mouse doesn't make this a particular fascinating
experience, though ;-)). I had no luck with NBD -- it seemed to have
protocol problems with the servers I tried.

35d3421dc5 Greatly enlarged the number of possible kernel_arg ranges as we were already
pretty close, and the number of loaded modules have a direct influence on
this (even though we're currently loading the symbols by default).

a1939ee423 Modified the pxe_ia32 stage 1 loader to load stage 2 at the same address as bios_ia32 stage 1 does.
This allowes to actually execute the boot loader now.
Need to use Ingo's remote_disk_server now for booting.

ecdaf9dea8 * The boot loader now adds all block devices in case the BIOS doesn't give enough
information to identify the boot volume - if we want to be able to map all BIOS
drive IDs to the disks in the system, we need to do this always, though.
* Forgot to commit the updated disk_identifier.h in the last commit...
* Removed the unused dumpBlock() function from devices.cpp.

ba61df6d0b Beginnings of APM support: we now connect to the APM BIOS in 32 bit protected mode.
We don't do anything with it yet, though, so the BIOS will probably ignore us since
we are supposed to poll for events.

e55e1a0e66 Implemented the PPC specific RTC support. We search for an "rtc"
device in the Open Firmware implementation of boot loader and
pass its path to the kernel, where it's opened and used for
getting/setting the real time. The expensive atomic_*64() on PPC
32-bit make things a bit more complicated. Moreover, missing
64 bit multiplication and division instructions won't really
allow system_time() to be anywhere near as fast as on x86. :-/

957a1b17eb * Introduced new build system variables
{HAIKU,HOST,TARGET}_KERNEL_PIC_{CC,LINK}FLAGS which define the
compiler/linker flags specifying the kind of position independence
the kernel shall have. For x86 we had and still have -fno-pic, but the
PPC kernel has -fPIE (position independent executable) now, as we
  need to relocate it.
* The boot loader relocates the kernel now. Mostly copied the relocation
code from the kernel ELF loader. Almost completely rewrote the PPC
specific relocation code, though. It's more correct and more complete now
(some things are still missing though).
* Added boot platform awareness to the kernel. Moved the generic
Open Firmware code (openfirmware.c/h) from the boot loader to the kernel.
* The kernel PPC serial debug output is sent to the console for the time
  being.
* The PPC boot loader counts the CPUs now and allocates the kernel stacks
(made OF device iteration a bit more flexible on the way -- the search
can be restricted to subtree). Furthermore we really enter the kernel...
(Yay! :-) ... and crash in the first dprintf() (in the atomic_set()
called by acquire_spinlock()). kprintf() works, though.

c83d9dad1c * platform_allocate_region() has a new boolean parameter "exactAddress"
specifying whether only the exact supplied address is acceptable. If
false, the address is considered a hint only. It will be picked, if
available, otherwise a greater address is tried to be acquired, and
as last resort any address. This feature is only implemented for PPC.
It is needed since the preferred kernel text base address 0x80000000
might not be available (and actually isn't on my Mac mini).
* Fixed a bug in the PPC memory management code:
is_{virtual,physical}_allocated() were checking whether the given
range was completely contained by an existing range instead of
checking for intersection. As a consequence we could (and did) allocate
a range intersecting with already allocated ranges. The kernel segment
thus overwrote OF memory for instance.
* The ELF loader makes sure that it got both text and data segment of
  the image to be loaded.

The PPC boot loader successfully loads kernel and modules now. Next
comes the hard part, I'm afraid.

d561d0ad68 Added a mini networking stack to the boot loader. It speaks basic ARP,
IP, and UDP, as well as a home brewn UDP based protocol, "remote disk",
which provides random access to a single remote file/device. The Open
Firmware flavored boot loader automatically initializes the net stack,
searches for a remote disk, and tries to boot from it, if the boot
device is a network device (e.g. when loading the boot loader via
TFTP).

This is quite nice for developing with a two-machine setup, since one
doesn't even need to install Haiku on the test machine anymore, but can
serve it directly from the development machine. When the networking
support in the kernel is working, this method could even be used to
fully boot, not just for loading kernel and initial modules.

5ea23bb0a3 Removed platform_boot_device_is_image() again; it's now replaced by a field
"booted_from_image" in the kernel_args' boot_disk structure.
Also, added fields "cd" and "user_selected".
A CHOICE_MENU menu can now have a choice text - this is automatically updated
as entries in the menu get selected.
The boot volume menu now has the initial choice text "CD-ROM or hard drive"
in case the boot loader was loaded from an image. The "Rescan volumes" item
is no longer selected by default (only if there was no boot volume found) - but
it's still functionless anyway.
The TAR fs will now appear as "Boot from CD-ROM" in the boot volume menu.
