Change attr in __LDATA from a char to an int. Fixes a few annoying
...
screen update problems (particularly on the pmax, sparc and alpha,
and i386 to a lesser extent). It seems that because __LDATA wasn't a
fully packed structure (and hashes to check for screen updates hashed
unused areas in the structure as well) that under some circumstances the
compiler filled the unused areas with garbage.
Doesn't break binary compatibiliy - no shared library version number
changes.

Use an identical source file for the libc and the libkern version of

The previous assertion change was incorrect: the preg argument is permitted to
...
be NULL (part of the interface definition!) unless errcode is REG_ATOI, which
is a non-portable extension.
Also, remove assertions from the local regatoi() function, as they are either
redundant or will never fail due to the buffer allocation for that argument in
regerror().

XXX: implement a scheme similar to $MALLOC_OPTIONS which gives the
