Our make can't actually turn off implicit rules per-target, and the

"depend:" rule had no actual commands to execute, so it used the implicit
".c:" rule in gas.new (which has a depend.c). Add a command here -- just
"true" -- that prevents use of implicit rules. This may need a new

always will.

This was originally intended for just the new distrib/notes and other
non-man-page project documentation, but in fact it can get almost all of
the man pages right at this point.
In many cases, I would suggest that original documentation not be written
in HTML or ASCII any more. A good example would be "supported devices".
It's presently duplicated, in the install notes, the web pages, and the
man pages. If written in -mdoc, it can automatically be a man page, a www
page feature, and a printable, downloadable file. We can generate PostScript
and the "unix enhanced text" format used by more(1), as well as plain old
ascii, and all using in-tree tools.

Changes to .Nx macro.

* Don't print the `et' in an itty bitty point size just because we want
small caps for the rest of `NetBSD'.
* Define an Nx number register so the macro becomes sort-of callable. It
does punctuation wrong, looking at argument count rather than argument
type, so this will need fixing before it is truly `parsed and callable'.

Add a checkver target to bsd.lib.mk. This target executes the checkver script to find installed shared libraries with major/minor versions that are too big. The realinstall target now depends upon this target so this check is done whenever a library is installed. The check may be disabled by setting NOCHECKVER.

Add options DDB_FROMCONSOLE and sysctl ddb.fromconsole, analagous to

DDB_ONPANIC. Lets user ignore breaks but enter DDB on panic. Intended
for machines where debug on panic is useful, but DDB entry is not,
(public-access console, or terminal-servers which send spurious breaks)
Add new ddb hook, console_debugger(), which decides whether or not to
ignore console ddb requests. Console drivers should be updated to call
console_debugger(), not Debugger(), in response to serial-console
break or ddb keyboard sequence.

1. Document CONTROL MODE (and the fact that you can do I/O now if
the device is opened in control mode- the actual close behaviour
is akin to normal mode (i.e., it rewinds)). This should probably
either be a separate bit, or O_NDELAY on the open as well.
2. Document new MTEWARN subcommand to MTIOCTOP (enable/disable
early warning behaviour).
3. Document EOM handling more fully.
4. Note that for DENSITY and BLOCKSIZE values that the values you
set aren't persistent past the current mount session unless you have
the CONTROL MODE device opened.
5. Remove the old EOM handling BUG notice and instead note that having
a minor bit for compression selection wouldn't be a bad thing.

misspellings, and grammatical errors corrected. A foolish consistency
(the hobgoblin of my small mind) in capitalization enforced for
certain trademarks (DECthis, DECthat, and so on). A little white
space added here and there for clarity. Some nroff peccadillos
tended to. Further remarks over issues not dealt with will be
committed in the PR.

gtar. pax has problems extracting certain archives which were made by
gtar and contain trailing trash at the end - gtar ignores this dross,

Replace the old .Nx macro (which was not parsed and callable, in spite

of what the documentation claimed) with a new one that is parsed and
callable, and far simplyer -- it turns ".Nx FOO ." into "NetBSD FOO."
without needing to have version numbers hard coded in.
Add a .Fx macro that is a copy of the .Nx macro except that it prints
"FreeBSD" instead of "NetBSD" -- this should make any future "HISTORY"
sections which credit FreeBSD easier, and will not require that we
constantly track their macro versions.

When a package depends on an executable from another package,

bsd.port.mk would always find the executable (using which), even if
there wasn't an executable in the $PATH. I've modified bsd.port.mk to
look for the executable directly, and simplified the shell code
somewhat in the process. There may be a lurking bug in shell exit
status handling here.
Noted by matthew green <mrg@madrugada.eterna.com.au> and Chris
Demetriou <cgd@netbsd.org> (PR pkg/4337) but I was too stupid to
realise what was happening. That, and a copy of gmake in
/usr/local/bin.
