Meson is a build system, currently implemented in Python, with multiple
output backends, including Ninja and Make. The build file syntax is
clean and easy to read unlike autotools. In practise, configuring and
building with Meson and Ninja has been observed to be much faster than
with autotools. Also cross-building support is excellent.
More information at http://mesonbuild.com
Since moving to Meson requires some changes from users in any case, we
took this opportunity to revamp build options. Most of the build options
still exist, some have changed names or more, and a few have been
dropped. The option to choose the Cairo flavour is not implemented since
for the longest time the Cairo image backend has been the only
recommended one.
This Meson build should be fully functional and it installs everything
an all-enabled autotools build does. Installed pkg-config files have
some minor differences that should be insignificant. Building of some
developer documentation that was never installed with autotools is
missing.
It is expected that the autotools build system will be removed soon
after the next Weston release.

It's a bit surprising that Weston looks different when launched from the root
of the git repo vs from elsewhere.
But it's also technically a security vulnerability: if I launch it from
a directory like /tmp, it might pick up a weston.ini created by another user,
which could then load modules with arbitrary code. Basically, it's the same
problem as including "." in $PATH.

Collect the fallback definitions of static_assert() from desktop-shell
and the test shell, and move them to helpers.h. This allows code
throughout the tree to use static_assert() for build-time assertions,
where it is supported by the compiler.
As GCC goes out of its way to only add static_assert() when C11 has been
explicitly requested - which we don't do - make sure to use the more
widely available _Static_assert() if that is provided.
This will be used in future patches to ensure two array lengths don't go

negative number, it treats it as a high value hexadecimal. IOW,
strtoul("-42", &val) sets val to 0xffffffd6. This could potentially
result in unintended surprise behaviors.
Catch this by using strtol() and then manually check for the negative
value. This logic is modelled after Wayland's strtouint().
Note that this change unfortunately reduces the range of parseable
numbers from [0,UINT_MAX] to [0,INT_MAX]. The current users of
weston_config_section_get_uint() are anticipating numbers far smaller

Previously weston_config_section_get_uint was serving dual purpose for
parsing both unsigned decimal integer values (ids, counts, seconds,
etc.) and hexadecimal values (colors), by relying on strtoul's
auto-detection mechanism.
However, this usage is unable to catch certain kinds of error
conditions, such as specifying a negative number where an unsigned
should be used. And for colors in particular, it would misparse hex
values if the leading 0x was omitted. E.g. "background-color=99999999"
would render a near-black background (effectively 0x05f5e0ff) instead of
medium grey, and "background-color=ffffffff" would be treated as an
error rather than white. "background-color=0x01234567",
"background-color=01234567", and "background-color=1234567" each
resulted in the value being parsed as hexadecimal, octal, and decimal
respectively, resulting in colors 0x01234567, 0x00053977, and 0x0012d687
being displayed.
This new routine forces hexadecimal to be used in all cases when parsing
color values, so "0x01234567" and "01234567" result in the same color
value, "99999999" is grey, and "ffffffff" is white. It also requires
exactly 8 or 10 digits (other lengths likely indicate typos), or the
value "0" (black).

When 0 is passed, as is currently done in option-parser.c, hexadecimal

This change is an expansion of f6051cbab8

When 0 is passed, as is currently done in option-parser.c, hexadecimal

In weston and the weston clients and tests using option-parser.c, the
options are all things that can be expected to be specified in base 10:

installed but didn’t want to link against it. This adds a
--without-webp configure option to never link against it, and a
--with-webp one to fail the build if it isn’t found, the default being
to use it if it is present.
Additionally, we now tell the user when WebP support has been disabled
and they try to load a WebP file.

We have the Weston command line option '--no-config' which is meant to
prevent loading weston.ini at all. It works for Weston itself, but it
does not work for any clients that also want to read weston.ini.
To fix that, introduce a new environment variable WESTON_CONFIG_FILE.
Weston will set it to the absolute path of the config file it loads.
Clients will load the config file pointed to by WESTON_CONFIG_FILE. If
the environment variable is set but empty, no config file will be
loaded. If the variable is unset, things fall back to the default
"weston.ini".
Note, that Weston will only set WESTON_CONFIG_FILE, it never reads it.
The ability to specify a custom config file to load will be another patch.
All programs that loaded "weston.ini" are modified to honour
WESTON_CONFIG_FILE.

There was an issue recently in screen-share.c where config.h was not
being included, resulting in the wrong definition for off_t being used on
32 bit systems. I checked and I don't think this problem is happening
elsewhere, but to help avoid this sort of problem in the future, I went
through and made sure that config.h is included first whenever system
headers are included.
The config.h header should be included before any system headers, failing
to do this can result in the wrong type sizes being defined on certain
systems, e.g. off_t from sys/types.h

This is used to figure out the size of "invisible" decorations, which we'll

In frame_create, we need to destroy any frame buttons created
in preceding calls to frame_button_create during the function
execution if any of the successive calls to frame_button_create
fail.
This has minimal severity since most, if not all, cases in
frame_button_create that result in a fail (i.e. NULL result) means
a program is OOM and the program will have to exit/abort anyway.

If posix_fallocate is available, use it instead of ftruncate. Unlike
ftruncate, when posix_fallocate succeeds, it guarantees that you cannot
run out of disk space, when later writing to the mmap()'ed file.
With posix_fallocate, if os_create_anonymous_file() succeeds, the
program cannot get a SIGBUS later from accessing this file via mmap. If
there is insufficient disk space, the function fails and errno is set to
ENOSPC.
This is useful on systems, that limit the available buffer space by
having XDG_RUNTIME_DIR on a small tmpfs.

AC_USE_SYSTEM_EXTENSIONS enables _XOPEN_SOURCE, _GNU_SOURCE and similar
macros to expose the largest extent of functionality supported by the
underlying system. This is required since these macros are often
limiting rather than merely additive, e.g. _XOPEN_SOURCE will actually
on some systems hide declarations which are not part of the X/Open spec.
Since this goes into config.h rather than the command line, ensure all
source is consistently including config.h before anything else,
including system libraries. This doesn't need to be guarded by a
HAVE_CONFIG_H ifdef, which was only ever a hangover from the X.Org
modular transition.

The current config parser, parses the ini file and pulls out the values
specified by the struct config_section passed to parse_config_file() and
then throw the rest away. This means that every place we want to get
info out of the ini file, we have to parse the whole thing again. It's not
a big overhead, but it's also not a convenient API.
This patch adds a parser that parses the ini file to a data structure and
puts that in weston_compositor->config along with API to query comfig
keys from the data structure. The old parser is still available, but
we'll transition to the new approach over the next few commits.
This set of changes adds support for searching for a given config file
in the directories listed in $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS if it wasn't found in
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME or ~/.config. This allows packages to install custom
config files in /etc/xdg/weston, for example, thus allowing them to
avoid dealing with home directories.
To avoid a TOCTOU race the config file is actually open()ed during the
search. Its file descriptor is returned and stored in the compositor
for later use when performing subsequent config file parses.

Before, cairo-util.h would combine pixman and cairo includes. X11 and
Wayland compositors uses this to load an image as a pixman_image_t but are
forced to include cairo headers. Clients use load_cairo_surface to
load images as cairo_surface_t's, but are forced to include pixman.h.
We move the load_image pixman prototype to its own header, so compositors
can get at the pixman prototype without including cairo.h and clients
can include the cairo based function without including pixman.h.
We want to make sure that the matrix symbols are exported from weston and
that modules get them from there. To do that, we pull matrix.[ch] out of
libshared and back into weston. calibrator now also links to matrix.[ch]
and we add a IN_WESTON define to enable the WL_EXPORT macro when compiled
inside weston.

We were pulling in cairo and the image loading libraries through libshared.
Split out libshared into a core libshared and a libshared-cairo that
pulls in the extra libraries.
Add THEME_FRAME_MAXIMIZED flag so the theming system can know not to draw
shadows for maximized windows. This allows maximized surfaces' content to be
sized and placed in a more expectable fashion.
We had duplicated code in many places, using hardcoded paths for
temporary files into more than one path. Some cases did not bother with
O_CLOEXEC, and all hardcoded paths that might not exist.
Add an OS helper function for creating a unique anonymous file with
close-on-exec semantics. The helper uses $XDG_RUNTIME_DIR as the
directory for a file.
This patch unifies the buffer file creation in both Weston and the
clients.
As simple clients are better not linking to libshared, as it would
require e.g. Cairo, they pull the OS compatibility code directly.
Android does not have mkostemp(), so a configure test is added for it,
and a fallback used if it is not available.
Changes in v2:
remove all the alternate possible directory definitions and use
XDG_RUNTIME_DIR only, and fail is it is not set.
