3d9b49254f consolidate qemu_iovec_memset{,_skip}() into single function and use existing iov_memset()
This patch combines two functions into one, and replaces
the implementation with already existing iov_memset() from
iov.c.

The new prototype of qemu_iovec_memset():
  size_t qemu_iovec_memset(qiov, size_t offset, int fillc, size_t bytes)
It is different from former qemu_iovec_memset_skip(), and
I want to make other functions to be consistent with it
too: first how much to skip, second what, and 3rd how many
of it. It also returns actual number of bytes filled in,
which may be less than the requested `bytes' if qiov is
smaller than offset+bytes, in the same way iov_memset()
does.

While at it, use utility function iov_memset() from
iov.h in posix-aio-compat.c, where qiov was used.

3d5a3f9a7f build: move target-independent hw/ objects to nested Makefile.objs
This patch starts converting the hw/ directory. Some files in hw/
are compiled once, some twice (32-/64-bit), some once per target.
Each category is moved in a separate patch.

After this patch, the files that are compiled once will show the
same hierarchy in the build tree as they do in the source tree,
for example hw/qdev.o instead of just qdev.o.

94b2629494 sdl: Add QEMU mascot icon for use with SDL
This is a bitmap file (32x32x4) derived from the official QEMU mascot
(which was designed by Benoît Canet). I stripped the text from the SVG
to get a nearly square image and converted the result to BMP without
any manual optimization.

The bitmap is currently used by QEMU's SDL interface and replaces the
default X icon.

6aae2a2e0e config-host.mak: rename datadir to qemu_datadir
Autoconf concept of "datadir" is supposed to be "$prefix/share", not
"$prefix/share/PACKAGE", so using datadir for the Qemu-specific
directory is confusing.

The current C code that uses CONFIG_QEMU_DATADIR should be safe, as now
create_config generates the same #define name (CONFIG_QEMU_DATADIR) for
both "datadir" and "qemu_datadir" variables.

3179d694a8 Support utf8 chars in pod docs
We've at least one UTF8 char in the qemu texi doc:

 $ grep Tibor qemu-doc.texi
 by Tibor "TS" Schütz.
 $ man ./qemu.1 | grep Tibor
        by Tibor "TS" SchA~Xtz.

This patch allows utf8 in man/pod docs.

Initially it was split into two parts and sent on 2012-02-02.
Resending it again (3rd time) now in merged form. If any
other generalizations of $(POD2MAN) are needed it can be done
in a separate patch. Current form of $(POD2MAN) is choosen
to be able to easily change it if some implementation does
not support utf8 or resulting output has issues with local
man(1) program/macros.

First, add @documentencoding in scripts/texi2pod.pl:

Currently our texi2pod ignores @documentencoding even if it is set
properly in *.texi files. This results in a mojibake in documents
generated from qemu.pod (which is generated from qemu-doc.texi by
texi2pod), because the rest of the tools assumes ASCII encoding.

This patch recognizes first @documentencoding in input and places
it at the beginning of output as =encoding directive.

Second, run pod2man with --utf8 option to enable utf8 in manpages:

This option makes no difference for manpages which contains only
ascii chars. But for manpages with actual UTF8 characters (qemu
docs contains these), this change allows to see real characters
instead of mojibakes or substitutes.

7b93fadf3a Add basic version of bridge helper
This patch adds a helper that can be used to create a tap device attached to
a bridge device. Since this helper is minimal in what it does, it can be
given CAP_NET_ADMIN which allows qemu to avoid running as root while still
satisfying the majority of what users tend to want to do with tap devices.

The way this all works is that qemu launches this helper passing a bridge
name and the name of an inherited file descriptor. The descriptor is one
end of a socketpair() of domain sockets. This domain socket is used to
transmit a file descriptor of the opened tap device from the helper to qemu.

The helper can then exit and let qemu use the tap device.

19bf7c8708 Fix qapi code generation fix
The fixes to qapi code generation had multiple bugs:
- the Null class used to drop output was missing some methods
- in some scripts it was never instantiated, leading to a None return,

- the --source and --header options were swapped

Luckily, all those bugs were hidden by a makefile bug which caused the
old behaviour (with the race) to be invoked.

8d3bc5178f Fix qapi code generation wrt parallel build
Make's multiple output syntax

  x.c x.h: x.template
       gen < x.template

actually invokes the command once for x.c and once for x.h (with differing $@
in each invocation). During a parallel build, the two commands may be invoked
in parallel; this opens up a race, where the second invocation trashes a file
supposedly produced during the first, and now in use by a dependent command.

The various qapi code generators are susceptible to this; fix by making them
generate just one file per invocation.

Remove the 'tarbin' target -- it isn't used as part of the official
QEMU release process, and it's out of date (various new bios files
were never added to its list of files). It's better not to provide
it at all than to have a broken makefile target we never use or test.

(Creating a tarball by just pulling in binaries that have been installed
directly to the system you're running the build on is a bad idea anyway:
the better way to create a binary tarball would be just to install to
a temporary DESTDIR and then tar up that.)

44dc0ca3d2 libcacard: add libcacard.la target
No flag to configure is required. Instead, added a libcacard.la target that
is not built by default, only when requested explicitly via:

mkdir build
cd build
../configure
make libcacard.la
make install-libcacard

Uses libtool to do actual linking of object files and shared library, and
installing. Tested only under linux, but supposed to work on other systems as
well.

If libtool isn't found you get a message complaining about that, only at build
time (since it is not a default target I did not add a message at configure
time).

New build artifacts:
.libs subdirectories (at <buildroot> and <buildroot>/libcacard)
*.lo files (at same locations as the respective o files)

Added %.lo : %.c rule that uses libtool.
Updated clean rule to clean up those artifacts.
Added specific rule to call dtrace with libtool wrapper (note that because of
a current upstream dtrace bug fixed by systemtap b1568fd85 commit the -fPIC flag
isn't actually passed on. still current dtrace+libtool produced object links fine).
If libtool is missing any of the following targets will complain and exit 1:
 any subdir: *.lo
 root and libcacard: libcacard.la, libcacard-instsall

Tested to link and load with all tracing backends.

a9f8ad8f2a Add SLOF-based partition firmware for pSeries machine, allowing more boot options
Currently, the emulated pSeries machine requires the use of the
-kernel parameter in order to explicitly load a guest kernel. This
means booting from the virtual disk, cdrom or network is not possible.

This patch addresses this limitation by inserting a within-partition
firmware image (derived from the "SLOF" free Open Firmware project).
If -kernel is not specified, qemu will now load the SLOF image, which
has access to the qemu boot device list through the device tree, and
can boot from any of the usual virtual devices.

In order to support the new firmware, an extension to the emulated
machine/hypervisor is necessary. Unlike Linux, which expects
multi-CPU entry to be handled kexec() style, the SLOF firmware expects
only one CPU to be active at entry, and to use a hypervisor RTAS
method to enable the other CPUs one by one.

This patch also implements this 'start-cpu' method, so that SLOF can
start the secondary CPUs and marshal them into the kexec() holding
pattern ready for entry into the guest OS. Linux should, and in the
future might directly use the start-cpu method to enable initially
disabled CPUs, but for now it does require kexec() entry.

39ac845510 Implement hcall based RTAS for pSeries machines
On pSeries machines, operating systems can instantiate "RTAS" (Run-Time
Abstraction Services), a runtime component of the firmware which implements
a number of low-level, infrequently used operations. On logical partitions
under a hypervisor, many of the RTAS functions require hypervisor
privilege. For simplicity, therefore, hypervisor systems typically
implement the in-partition RTAS as just a tiny wrapper around a hypercall
which actually implements the various RTAS functions.

This patch implements such a hypercall based RTAS for our emulated pSeries
machine. A tiny in-partition "firmware" calls a new hypercall, which
looks up available RTAS services in a table.

b3d08c029d Add a DTrace tracing backend targetted for SystemTAP compatability
This introduces a new tracing backend that targets the SystemTAP
implementation of DTrace userspace tracing. The core functionality
should be applicable and standard across any DTrace implementation
on Solaris, OS-X, *BSD, but the Makefile rules will likely need
some small additional changes to cope with OS specific build
requirements.

This backend builds a little differently from the other tracing
backends. Specifically there is no 'trace.c' file, because the
'dtrace' command line tool generates a '.o' file directly from
the dtrace probe definition file. The probe definition is usually
named with a '.d' extension but QEMU uses '.d' files for its
external makefile dependancy tracking, so this uses '.dtrace' as
the extension for the probe definition file.

The 'tracetool' program gains the ability to generate a trace.h
file for DTrace, and also to generate the trace.d file containing
the dtrace probe definition.

Example usage of a dtrace probe in systemtap looks like:

  probe process("qemu").mark("qemu_malloc") {
    printf("Malloc %d %p\n", $arg1, $arg2);
  }

* .gitignore: Ignore trace-dtrace.*
* Makefile: Extra rules for generating DTrace files

This moves library functions used by both QEMU and the QEMU tools,

df2943ba3c qemu-options.def: add to generated header list
All files include qemu-options.h which pulls in qemu-options.def from
the root directory. Thus generating qemu-options.def from Makefile.objs
under the target directory is not effective.

Further, people expect .def file to get cleaned with make clean:
it does not have state so no reason to defer removing it
until distclean. Also add a rule to remove old files that might
be around.

This fixes the error: ‘QEMU_OPTION_spice’ undeclared
(first use in this function) error that some people reported
which is really down to an out of date .def file.

Move timer init functions to a new file, qemu-timer-common.c. Make other

Adjust block/raw-posix.c and simpletrace.c to use get_clock() directly.
Remove a similar/duplicate definition in qemu-tool.c.

Adjust hw/omap_clk.c to include qemu-timer.h because muldiv64() is used
there.

After this change, tracing can be used also for user code and

o QMP documentation (all SQMP/EQMP sections)

Right now it's only used to generate the QMP docs in QMP/, but

It's important to note that QObject handlers entries are going
to get duplicated: they will exist in both QMP's and HMP's

This will be fixed in the near future, when we add a proper
QMP call interface and HMP is converted to use it. This way we
can completely drop QObject handlers entries from HMP's tables.

91f169004d trace: Fix user emulator dependency on trace objects
On a clean build, after generating trace.h, make would recurse into *-*-user
without a clue how to build ../trace.o (added to $(obj-y) in Makefile.target)
since its generation rule is in the main Makefile.
The softmmus are seemingly unaffected because the $(TOOLS), which each have
a dependency on $(trace-obj-y), are built first for the build-all target.

Add a dependency on $(trace-obj-y) for %-user, as done for the qemu-* tools.

Let's be paranoid and do the same for %-softmmu while at it, just in case
someone messes with $(TOOLS) or calls the Makefile target directly.

94a420b170 trace: Add trace-events file for declaring trace events
This patch introduces the trace-events file where trace events can be
declared like so:

qemu_malloc(size_t size) "size %zu"
qemu_free(void *ptr) "ptr %p"

These trace event declarations are processed by a new tool called
tracetool to generate code for the trace events. Trace event
declarations are independent of the backend tracing system (LTTng User
Space Tracing, ftrace markers, DTrace).

The default "nop" backend generates empty trace event functions.
Therefore trace events are disabled by default.

The trace-events file serves two purposes:

1. Adding trace events is easy. It is not necessary to understand the
details of a backend tracing system. The trace-events file is a
single location where trace events can be declared without code
   duplication.

2. QEMU is not tightly coupled to one particular backend tracing system.
In order to support tracing across QEMU host platforms and to
anticipate new backend tracing systems that are currently maturing,
it is important to be flexible and not tied to one system.

b40292e711 QMP: Introduce commands documentation
One of the most important missing feature in QMP today is its
supported commands documentation.

The plan is to make it part of self-description support, however
self-description is a big task we have been postponing for a
long time now and still don't know when it's going to be done.

In order not to compromise QMP adoption and make users' life easier,
this commit adds a simple text documentation which fully describes
all QMP supported commands.

This is not ideal for a number of reasons (harder to maintain,
text-only, etc) but does improve the current situation. To avoid at
least divering from the user monitor help and texi snippets, QMP bits
are also maintained inside qemu-monitor.hx, and hxtool is extended to
generate a single text file from them.

b5ec5ce0e3 Add cpu model configuration support..
This is a reimplementation of prior versions which adds
the ability to define cpu models for contemporary processors.
The added models are likewise selected via -cpu <name>,
and are intended to displace the existing convention
of "-cpu qemu64" augmented with a series of feature flags.

A primary motivation was determination of a least common
denominator within a given processor class to simplify guest
migration. It is still possible to modify an arbitrary model
via additional feature flags however the goal here was to
make doing so unnecessary in typical usage. The other
consideration was providing models names reflective of
current processors. Both AMD and Intel have reviewed the
models in terms of balancing generality of migration vs.
excessive feature downgrade relative to released silicon.

This version of the patch replaces the prior hard wired
definitions with a configuration file approach for new
models. Existing models are thus far left as-is but may
easily be transitioned to (or may be overridden by) the
configuration file representation.

Proposed new model definitions are provided here for current
AMD and Intel processors. Each model consists of a name
used to select it on the command line (-cpu <name>), and a
model_id which corresponds to a least common denominator
commercial instance of the processor class.

A table of names/model_ids may be queried via "-cpu ?model":

        :
    x86 Opteron_G3 AMD Opteron 23xx (Gen 3 Class Opteron)
    x86 Opteron_G2 AMD Opteron 22xx (Gen 2 Class Opteron)
    x86 Opteron_G1 AMD Opteron 240 (Gen 1 Class Opteron)
x86 Nehalem Intel Core i7 9xx (Nehalem Class Core i7)
x86 Penryn Intel Core 2 Duo P9xxx (Penryn Class Core 2)
    x86 Conroe Intel Celeron_4x0 (Conroe/Merom Class Core 2)
        :

Also added is "-cpu ?dump" which exhaustively outputs all config
data for all defined models, and "-cpu ?cpuid" which enumerates
all qemu recognized CPUID feature flags.

The pseudo cpuid flag 'check' when added to the feature flag list
will warn when feature flags (either implicit in a cpu model or
explicit on the command line) would have otherwise been quietly
unavailable to a guest:

    # qemu-system-x86_64 ... -cpu Nehalem,check
warning: host cpuid 0000_0001 lacks requested flag 'sse4.2|sse4_2' [0x00100000]
warning: host cpuid 0000_0001 lacks requested flag 'popcnt' [0x00800000]

A similar 'enforce' pseudo flag exists which in addition
to the above causes qemu to error exit if requested flags are
unavailable.

Configuration data for a cpu model resides in the target config
file which by default will be installed as:

    /usr/local/etc/qemu/target-<arch>.conf

The format of this file should be self explanatory given the
definitions for the above six models and essentially mimics
the structure of the static x86_def_t x86_defs.

Encoding of cpuid flags names now allows aliases for both the
configuration file and the command line which reconciles some
Intel/AMD/Linux/Qemu naming differences.

This patch was tested relative to qemu.git.

59bc10ee01 finish VPATH -> vpath translation
This adds a few more vpath suffixes and points the remaining two paths
explicitly to $(SRC_PATH) in order to eliminate the VPATH assignment
from config-host.mak.

for most users (who don't edit config-devices.mak).

076d247142 Use vpath directive
The vpath directive has two advantages over the VPATH variable:
1) it allows to skip searching of .o files; 2) the default semantics
are to append to the vpath, so there is no confusion between "VPATH=xyz"
and "VPATH+=xyz".

Since "vpath %.c %.h PATH" is not valid, I'm introducing a wrapper
macro to append one or more directories to the vpath.
