Description copied from Linux kernel commit from Gustavo A. R. Silva
(see [3]):
--v-- description start --v--
The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to
declare variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible
array member [1], introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler
warning in case the flexible array does not occur last in the
structure, which will help us prevent some kind of undefined
behavior bugs from being unadvertenly introduced [2] to the
Linux codebase from now on.
--^-- description end --^--
Do the similar housekeeping in the QEMU codebase (which uses
C99 since commit 7be41675f7).
All these instances of code were found with the help of the
following Coccinelle script:

type t, T;

Add support for VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_IN_BAND_NOTIFICATIONS, but
as it's not desired by default, don't enable it unless the device
implementation opts in by returning it from its protocol features
callback.
Note that I updated vu_set_vring_err_exec(), but didn't add any
sending of the VHOST_USER_SLAVE_VRING_ERR message as there's no
write to the err_fd today either.
This also adds vu_queue_notify_sync() which can be used to force
a synchronous notification if inband notifications are supported.
Previously, I had left out the slave->master direction handling
of F_REPLY_ACK, this now adds some code to support it as well.

If you try to make a device implementation that can handle multiple
connections and allow disconnections (which requires overriding the
VHOST_USER_NONE handling), then glib will warn that we remove a src
while it's still on the mainloop, and will poll() an FD that doesn't
exist anymore.
Fix this by making vug_source_new() require pairing with the new
vug_source_destroy() so we can keep the GSource referenced in the
meantime.
Note that this requires calling the new API in vhost-user-input.
vhost-user-gpu also uses vug_source_new(), but never seems to free
the result at all, so I haven't changed anything there.

If a new setmemtable command comes in once the vhost threads are
running, it will remap the guests address space and the threads
will now be looking in the wrong place.
Fortunately we're running this command under lock, so we can
update the queue mappings so that threads will look in the new-right

Existing vhost-user device backends, including vhost-user-scsi and
vhost-user-blk, support multiqueue but libvhost-user currently does not
advertise this.
VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_MQ enables the VHOST_USER_GET_QUEUE_NUM request
needed for a vhost-user master to query the number of queues. For
example, QEMU's vhost-user-net master depends on
VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_MQ for multiqueue.
If you're wondering how any device backend with more than one virtqueue
functions today, it's because device types with a fixed number of
virtqueues do not require querying the number of queues. Therefore the
vhost-user master for vhost-user-input with 2 virtqueues, for example,
doesn't actually depend on VHOST_USER_PROTOCOL_F_MQ. It just enables
virtqueues 0 and 1 without asking.
Let there be multiqueue!

Currently libvhost-user is hardcoded to at most 8 virtqueues. The
device backend should decide the number of virtqueues, not
libvhost-user. This is important for multiqueue device backends where
the guest driver needs an accurate number of virtqueues.
This change breaks libvhost-user and libvhost-user-glib API stability.
There is no stability guarantee yet, so make this change now and update
all in-tree library users.
This patch touches up vhost-user-blk, vhost-user-gpu, vhost-user-input,
vhost-user-scsi, and vhost-user-bridge. If the device has a fixed
number of queues that exact number is used. Otherwise the previous
default of 8 virtqueues is used.
vu_init() and vug_init() can now fail if malloc() returns NULL. I
considered aborting with an error in libvhost-user but it should be safe
to instantiate new vhost-user instances at runtime without risk of
terminating the process. Therefore callers need to handle the vu_init()
failure now.
vhost-user-blk and vhost-user-scsi duplicate virtqueue index checks that
are already performed by libvhost-user. This code would need to be
modified to use max_queues but remove it completely instead since it's
redundant.

Add a new vhost-user message to give a unix socket to a vhost-user
backend for GPU display updates.
Back when I started that work, I added a new GPU channel because the
vhost-user protocol wasn't bidirectional. Since then, there is a
vhost-user-slave channel for the slave to send requests to the master.
We could extend it with GPU messages. However, the GPU protocol is
quite orthogonal to vhost-user, thus I chose to have a new dedicated
channel.
See vhost-user-gpu.rst for the protocol details.

uses it as a key to fetch the destination fd from the mapping table.
A context can be dgid in case of CM request message or comm_id in case

When MAD message with a smaller size as expected for the message type
received we are hitting out-of-bounds where we are looking for the
context out of message boundaries.

Most list head structs need not be given a name. In most cases the
name is given just in case one is going to use QTAILQ_LAST, QTAILQ_PREV
or reverse iteration, but this does not apply to lists of other kinds,
and even for QTAILQ in practice this is only rarely needed. In addition,
we will soon reimplement those macros completely so that they do not
need a name for the head struct. So clean up everything, not giving a
name except in the rare case where it is necessary.

RDMA MAD kernel module (ibcm) disallow more than one MAD-agent for a
given MAD class.
This does not go hand-by-hand with qemu pvrdma device's requirements
where each VM is MAD agent.
Fix it by adding implementation of RDMA MAD multiplexer service which on
one hand register as a sole MAD agent with the kernel module and on the
other hand gives service to more than one VM.

A client process (such as QEMU) connects to this unix socket and
registers with its own GID.
TX:
----
When client needs to send rdma_cm MAD message it construct it the same
way as without this multiplexer, i.e. creates a umad packet but this
time it writes its content to the socket instead of calling umad_send().
The server, upon receiving such a message fetch local_comm_id from it so
a context for this session can be maintain and relay the message to UMAD
layer by calling umad_send().
RX:
----
The server creates a worker thread to process incoming rdma_cm MAD
messages. When an incoming message arrived (umad_recv()) the server,
depending on the message type (attr_id) looks for target client by
either searching in gid->fd table or in local_comm_id->fd table. With
the extracted fd the server relays to incoming message to the client.

elf2dmp is a converter from ELF dump (produced by 'dump-guest-memory') to
Windows MEMORY.DMP format (also know as 'Complete Memory Dump') which can be
opened in WinDbg.
This tool can help if VMCoreInfo device/driver is absent in Windows VM and
'dump-guest-memory -w' is not available but dump can be created in ELF format.
The tool works as follows:
1. Determine the system paging root looking at GS_BASE or KERNEL_GS_BASE
to locate the PRCB structure and finds the kernel CR3 nearby if QEMU CPU
state CR3 is not suitable.
2. Find an address within the kernel image by dereferencing the first
IDT entry and scans virtual memory upwards until the start of the
kernel.
3. Download a PDB matching the kernel from the Microsoft symbol store,
and figure out the layout of certain relevant structures necessary for
the dump.
4. Populate the corresponding structures in the memory image and create
the appropriate dump header.

We need a better way, but at the moment we need the address of the

userfaultfd it reads.
This is done as a 3 stage set:
QEMU -> client
set_mem_table
mmap stuff, get addresses
client -> qemu
here are the addresses
qemu -> client
OK - now you can use them
That ensures that qemu has registered the new addresses in it's

This commit introduces a vhost-user-scsi backend sample application. It
must be linked with libiscsi and libvhost-user.
To use it, compile with:
$ make vhost-user-scsi
And run as follows:
$ ./vhost-user-scsi -u vus.sock -i iscsi://uri_to_target/
$ qemu-system-x86_64 --enable-kvm -m 512 \
-object memory-backend-file,id=mem,size=512m,share=on,mem-path=guestmem \
-numa node,memdev=mem \
-chardev socket,id=vhost-user-scsi,path=vus.sock \
-device vhost-user-scsi-pci,chardev=vhost-user-scsi \
The application is currently limited at one LUN only and it processes
requests synchronously (therefore only achieving QD1). The purpose of
the code is to show how a backend can be implemented and to test the
vhost-user-scsi Qemu implementation.
If a different instance of this vhost-user-scsi application is executed
at a remote host, a VM can be live migrated to such a host.

On gcc 3.4 and newer, simply using (void) in front of WUR functions is
not sufficient to ignore the return value. That prevents a build when
handling warnings as errors.
libvhost-user had a usage of (void)vasprintf() which triggered such a
condition. This fixes it by replacing this call with g_strdup_vprintf()
which aborts on OOM.

Add a library to help implementing vhost-user backend (or slave).
Dealing with vhost-user as an application developer isn't so easy: you
have all the trouble with any protocol: validation, unix ancillary data,
shared memory, eventfd, logging, and on top of that you need to deal
with virtio queues, if possible efficiently.
qemu test has a nice vhost-user testing application vhost-user-bridge,
which implements most of vhost-user, and virtio.c which implements
virtqueues manipulation. Based on these two, I tried to make a simple
library, reusable for tests or development of new vhost-user scenarios.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

You may use k, M, G or T suffixes for kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes.
The last line is new with this patch.

redundant, because the error message proper is always of the form

The current ivshmem protocol uses 'long' for integers. But the
sizeof(long) depends on the host and the endianess is not defined, which
may cause portability troubles.
Instead, switch to using little-endian int64_t. This breaks the
protocol, except on x64 little-endian host where this change
should be compatible.
