Polling during bdrv_drained_end() can be problematic (and in the future,
we may get cases for bdrv_drained_begin() where polling is forbidden,
and we don't care about already in-flight requests, but just want to
prevent new requests from arriving).
The .bdrv_drained_begin/end callbacks running in a coroutine is the only
reason why we have to do this polling, so make them non-coroutine
callbacks again. None of the callers actually yield any more.
This means that bdrv_drained_end() effectively doesn't poll any more,
even if AIO_WAIT_WHILE() loops are still there (their condition is false
from the beginning). This is generally not a problem, but in
test-bdrv-drain, some additional explicit aio_poll() calls need to be
added because the test case wants to verify the final state after BHs
have executed.

We are going to increase usage of collecting nodes in a list to then
update, and calling bdrv_topological_dfs() each time is not convenient,
and not correct as we are going to interleave graph modifying with
filling the node list.
So, let's switch to a function that takes any list of nodes, adds all
their subtrees and do topological sort. And finally, refresh
permissions.
While being here, make the function public, as we'll want to use it
from blockdev.c in near future.

We want to use bdrv_child_get_parent_aio_context() from
bdrv_parent_drained_{begin,end}_single(), both of which are "I/O or GS"
functions.
Prior to 3ed4f708fe, all the implementations were I/O code anyway.
3ed4f708fe has put block jobs' AioContext field under the job mutex, so
to make child_job_get_parent_aio_context() work in an I/O context, we
need to take that lock there.
Furthermore, blk_root_get_parent_aio_context() is not marked as
anything, but is safe to run in an I/O context, so mark it that way now.
(blk_get_aio_context() is an I/O code function.)
With that done, all implementations explicitly are I/O code, so we can
mark bdrv_child_get_parent_aio_context() as I/O code, too, so callers
know it is safe to run from both GS and I/O contexts.

improve error handling during module load, by changing:
bool module_load(const char *prefix, const char *lib_name);
void module_load_qom(const char *type);
to:
int module_load(const char *prefix, const char *name, Error **errp);
int module_load_qom(const char *type, Error **errp);
where the return value is:
-1 on module load error, and errp is set with the error
0 on module or one of its dependencies are not installed
1 on module load success
2 on module load success (module already loaded or built-in)
module_load_qom_one has been introduced in:
commit 28457744c3 ("module: qom module support"), which built on top of
module_load_one, but discarded the bool return value. Restore it.
Adapt all callers to emit errors, or ignore them, or fail hard,
as appropriate in each context.
Replace the previous emission of errors via fprintf in _some_ error
conditions with Error and error_report, so as to emit to the appropriate
target.
A memory leak is also fixed as part of the module_load changes.
audio: when attempting to load an audio module, report module load errors.
Note that still for some callers, a single issue may generate multiple
error reports, and this could be improved further.
Regarding the audio code itself, audio_add() seems to ignore errors,
and this should probably be improved.
block: when attempting to load a block module, report module load errors.
For the code paths that already use the Error API, take advantage of those
to report module load errors into the Error parameter.
For the other code paths, we currently emit the error, but this could be
improved further by adding Error parameters to all possible code paths.
console: when attempting to load a display module, report module load errors.
qdev: when creating a new qdev Device object (DeviceState), report load errors.
If a module cannot be loaded to create that device, now abort execution
(if no CONFIG_MODULE) or exit (if CONFIG_MODULE).
qom/object.c: when initializing a QOM object, or looking up class_by_name,
report module load errors.
qtest: when processing the "module_load" qtest command, report errors
in the load of the module.

Replace all direct usage of ->can_set_aio_ctx and ->set_aio_ctx,
and call bdrv_child_try_change_aio_context() in
bdrv_try_set_aio_context(), the main function called through
the whole block layer.

Minor performance improvement, but given that we have hash tables
available, avoid iterating in the visited nodes list every time just
to check if a node has been already visited.
The data structure is not actually a proper hash map, but an hash set,
as we are just adding nodes and not key,value pairs.

Simplify the way the aiocontext can be changed in a BDS graph.
There are currently two problems in bdrv_try_set_aio_context:
- There is a confusion of AioContext locks taken and released, because
we assume that old aiocontext is always taken and new one is
taken inside.
- It doesn't look very safe to call bdrv_drained_begin while some
nodes have already switched to the new aiocontext and others haven't.
This could be especially dangerous because bdrv_drained_begin polls, so
something else could be executed while graph is in an inconsistent
state.
Additional minor nitpick: can_set and set_ callbacks both traverse the
graph, both using the ignored list of visited nodes in a different way.
Therefore, get rid of all of this and introduce a new callback,
change_aio_context, that uses transactions to efficiently, cleanly
and most importantly safely change the aiocontext of a graph.
This new callback is a "merge" of the two previous ones:
- Just like can_set_aio_context, recursively traverses the graph.
Marks all nodes that are visited using a GList, and checks if
they *could* change the aio_context.
- For each node that passes the above check, drain it and add a new transaction
that implements a callback that effectively changes the aiocontext.
- Once done, the recursive function returns if *all* nodes can change
the AioContext. If so, commit the above transactions.
Regardless of the outcome, call transaction.clean() to undo all drains
done in the recursion.
- The transaction list is scanned only after all nodes are being drained, so
we are sure that they all are in the same context, and then
we switch their AioContext, concluding the drain only after all nodes
switched to the new AioContext. In this way we make sure that
bdrv_drained_begin() is always called under the old AioContext, and
bdrv_drained_end() under the new one.
- Because of the above, we don't need to release and re-acquire the
old AioContext every time, as everything is done once (and not
per-node drain and aiocontext change).
Note that the "change" API is not yet invoked anywhere.

bs->file and bs->backing are a kind of duplication of part of
bs->children. But very useful diplication, so let's not drop them at
all:)
We should manage bs->file and bs->backing in same place, where we
manage bs->children, to keep them in sync.
Moreover, generic io paths are unprepared to BdrvChild without a bs, so
it's double good to clear bs->file / bs->backing when we detach the
child.
Detach is simple: if we detach bs->file or bs->backing child, just
set corresponding field to NULL.
Attach is a bit more complicated. But we still can precisely detect
should we set one of bs->file / bs->backing or not:
- if role is BDRV_CHILD_COW, we definitely deal with bs->backing
- else, if role is BDRV_CHILD_FILTERED (it must be also
BDRV_CHILD_PRIMARY), it's a filtered child. Use
bs->drv->filtered_child_is_backing to chose the pointer field to
modify.
- else, if role is BDRV_CHILD_PRIMARY, we deal with bs->file
- in all other cases, it's neither bs->backing nor bs->file. It's some
other child and we shouldn't care
OK. This change brings one more good thing: we can (and should) get rid
of all indirect pointers in the block-graph-change transactions:
bdrv_attach_child_common() stores BdrvChild** into transaction to clear
it on abort.
bdrv_attach_child_common() has two callers: bdrv_attach_child_noperm()
just pass-through this feature, bdrv_root_attach_child() doesn't need
the feature.
Look at bdrv_attach_child_noperm() callers:
- bdrv_attach_child() doesn't need the feature
- bdrv_set_file_or_backing_noperm() uses the feature to manage
bs->file and bs->backing, we don't want it anymore
- bdrv_append() uses the feature to manage bs->backing, again we
don't want it anymore
So, we should drop this stuff! Great!
We could probably keep BdrvChild** argument to keep the int return
value, but it seems not worth the complexity.
Finally, we now set .file / .backing automatically in generic code and
want to restring setting them by hand outside of .attach/.detach.
So, this patch cleanups all remaining places where they were set.
To find such places I use:

We are going to reimplement this behavior (clear bs->file / bs->backing
pointers automatically when child->bs is cleared) in a nicer way, see
further commit
"block: Manipulate bs->file / bs->backing pointers in .attach/.detach".
With this revert we bring back a problem that was fixed by b0a9f6fed3.
Still the problem was mostly theoretical, we don't have concrete bugs
fixed by b0a9f6fed3, we don't have a specific test. Probably some
accidental failures of iotests are related.
Alternatively, we may merge this and following three reverts into final
"block: Manipulate ..." to avoid any kind of regression. But seems that
in this case having separate clear revert commits is better.

Almost all drivers call bdrv_open_child() similarly. Let's create a
helper for this.
The only not updated drivers that call bdrv_open_child() to set
bs->file are raw-format and snapshot-access:
raw-format sometimes want to have filtered child but
don't set drv->is_filter to true.
snapshot-access wants only DATA | PRIMARY
Possibly we should implement drv->is_filter_func() handler, to consider
raw-format as filter when it works as filter.. But it's another story.
Note also, that we decrease assignments to bs->file in code: it helps
us restrict modifying this field in further commit.

At present there are two callers of get_tmp_filename() and they are
inconsistent.
One does:

ret = get_tmp_filename(tmp_filename, PATH_MAX + 1);
while the other does:
s->qcow_filename = g_malloc(PATH_MAX);

As we can see different 'size' arguments are passed. There are also
platform specific implementations inside the function, and the use
of snprintf is really undesirable.
The function name is also misleading. It creates a temporary file,
not just a filename.
Refactor this routine by changing its name and signature to:
char *create_tmp_file(Error **errp)
and use g_get_tmp_dir() / g_mkstemp() for a consistent implementation.
While we are here, add some comments to mention that /var/tmp is
preferred over /tmp on non-win32 hosts.

return value of close() does not seem useful. The file descriptor
is almost certainly closed; see close(2) under "Dealing with error
returns from close()".

Block drivers may optimize I/O requests accessing buffers previously
registered with bdrv_register_buf(). Checking whether all elements of a
request's QEMUIOVector are within previously registered buffers is
expensive, so we need a hint from the user to avoid costly checks.
Add a BDRV_REQ_REGISTERED_BUF request flag to indicate that all
QEMUIOVector elements in an I/O request are known to be within
previously registered buffers.
Always pass the flag through to driver read/write functions. There is
little harm in passing the flag to a driver that does not use it.
Passing the flag to drivers avoids changes across many block drivers.
Filter drivers would need to explicitly support the flag and pass
through to their children when the children support it. That's a lot of
code changes and it's hard to remember to do that everywhere, leading to
silent reduced performance when the flag is accidentally dropped.
The only problematic scenario with the approach in this patch is when a
driver passes the flag through to internal I/O requests that don't use
the same I/O buffer. In that case the hint may be set when it should
actually be clear. This is a rare case though so the risk is low.
Some drivers have assert(!flags), which no longer works when
BDRV_REQ_REGISTERED_BUF is passed in. These assertions aren't very
useful anyway since the functions are called almost exclusively by
bdrv_driver_preadv/pwritev() so if we get flags handling right there
then the assertion is not needed.

Now that the API offers also _locked() functions, take advantage
of it and give also the caller control to take the lock and call
_locked functions.
This makes sense especially when we have for loops, because it
makes no sense to have:
for(job = job_next(); ...)
where each job_next() takes the lock internally.
Instead we want
JOB_LOCK_GUARD();
for(job = job_next_locked(); ...)
In addition, protect also direct field accesses, by either creating a
new critical section or widening the existing ones.
Note: at this stage, job_{lock/unlock} and job lock guard macros
are *nop*.

Make them return 0 instead, for consistency with other I/O functions and

Replace the global variables with inlined helper functions. getpagesize() is very
likely annotated with a "const" function attribute (at least with glibc), and thus
optimization should apply even better.
This avoids the need for a constructor initialization too.

block coroutines functions run in different aiocontext, and are
not protected by the BQL. Therefore are I/O.
On the other side, generated_co_wrapper functions use BDRV_POLL_WHILE,
meaning the caller can either be the main loop or a specific iothread.

We want to be sure that the functions that write the child and
parent list of a bs are under BQL and drain.
BQL prevents from concurrent writings from the GS API, while
drains protect from I/O.
TODO: drains are missing in some functions using this assert.
Therefore a proper assertion will fail. Because adding drains
requires additional discussions, they will be added in future
series.

All the global state (GS) API functions will check that
qemu_in_main_thread() returns true. If not, it means
that the safety of BQL cannot be guaranteed, and
they need to be moved to I/O.

block.h currently contains a mix of functions:
some of them run under the BQL and modify the block layer graph,
others are instead thread-safe and perform I/O in iothreads.
Some others can only be called by either the main loop or the
iothread running the AioContext (and not other iothreads),
and using them in another thread would cause deadlocks, and therefore
it is not ideal to define them as I/O.
It is not easy to understand which function is part of which
group (I/O vs GS vs "I/O or GS"), and this patch aims to clarify it.
The "GS" functions need the BQL, and often use
aio_context_acquire/release and/or drain to be sure they
can modify the graph safely.
The I/O function are instead thread safe, and can run in
any AioContext.
"I/O or GS" functions run instead in the main loop or in
a single iothread, and use BDRV_POLL_WHILE().
By splitting the header in two files, block-io.h
and block-global-state.h we have a clearer view on what
needs what kind of protection. block-common.h
contains common structures shared by both headers.
block.h is left there for legacy and to avoid changing
all includes in all c files that use the block APIs.
Assertions are added in the next patch.

Split bdrv_co_invalidate cache in two: the Global State (under BQL)
code that takes care of permissions and running GS callbacks,
and leave only the I/O code (->bdrv_co_invalidate_cache) running in
the I/O coroutine.
The only side effect is that bdrv_co_invalidate_cache is not
recursive anymore, and so is every direct call to
bdrv_invalidate_cache().

Graph modifications should be done in drained section. stream_prepare()
handler of block stream job call bdrv_set_backing_hd() without using
drained section and it's theoretically possible that some IO request
will interleave with graph modification and will use outdated pointers
to removed block nodes.
Some other callers use bdrv_set_backing_hd() not caring about drained
sections too. So it seems good to make a drained section exactly in
bdrv_set_backing_hd().

First, this permission never protected a node from being changed, as
generic child-replacing functions don't check it.
Second, it's a strange thing: it presents a permission of parent node
to change its child. But generally, children are replaced by different
mechanisms, like jobs or qmp commands, not by nodes.
Graph-mod permission is hard to understand. All other permissions
describe operations which done by parent node on its child: read,
write, resize. Graph modification operations are something completely
different.
The only place where BLK_PERM_GRAPH_MOD is used as "perm" (not shared
perm) is mirror_start_job, for s->target. Still modern code should use
bdrv_freeze_backing_chain() to protect from graph modification, if we
don't do it somewhere it may be considered as a bug. So, it's a bit
risky to drop GRAPH_MOD, and analyzing of possible loss of protection
is hard. But one day we should do it, let's do it now.
One more bit of information is that locking the corresponding byte in
file-posix doesn't make sense at all.

In most of the block layer, especially when traversing down from other
BlockDriverStates, we assume that BdrvChild.bs can never be NULL. When
it becomes NULL, it is expected that the corresponding BdrvChild pointer
also becomes NULL and the BdrvChild object is freed.
Therefore, once bdrv_replace_child_noperm() sets the BdrvChild.bs
pointer to NULL, it should also immediately set the corresponding
BdrvChild pointer (like bs->file or bs->backing) to NULL.
In that context, it also makes sense for this function to free the
child. Sometimes we cannot do so, though, because it is called in a
transactional context where the caller might still want to reinstate the
child in the abort branch (and free it only on commit), so this behavior
has to remain optional.
In bdrv_replace_child_tran()'s abort handler, we now rely on the fact
that the BdrvChild passed to bdrv_replace_child_tran() must have had a
non-NULL .bs pointer initially. Make a note of that and assert it.

As of a future commit, bdrv_replace_child_noperm() will clear the
indirect BdrvChild pointer passed to it if the new child BDS is NULL.
bdrv_replace_child_tran() will want to let it do that, but revert this
change in its abort handler. For that, we need to have it receive a
BdrvChild ** pointer, too, and keep it stored in the
BdrvReplaceChildState object that we attach to the transaction.
Note that we do not need to store it in the BdrvReplaceChildState when
new_bs is not NULL, because then there is nothing to revert. This is
important so that bdrv_replace_node_noperm() can pass a pointer to a
loop-local variable to bdrv_replace_child_tran() without worrying that
this pointer will outlive one loop iteration.
(Of course, for that to work, bdrv_replace_node_noperm() and in turn
bdrv_replace_node() and its relatives may not be called with a NULL @to
node. Luckily, they already are not, but now we should assert this.)
bdrv_remove_file_or_backing_child() on the other hand needs to ensure
that the indirect pointer it passes will stay valid for the duration of
the transaction. Ensure this by keeping a strong reference to the BDS
whose &bs->backing or &bs->file it passes to bdrv_replace_child_tran(),
and giving up that reference only in the transaction .clean() handler.

bdrv_replace_child_noperm() modifies BdrvChild.bs, and can potentially
set it to NULL. That is dangerous, because BDS parents generally assume
that their children's .bs pointer is never NULL. We therefore want to
let bdrv_replace_child_noperm() set the corresponding BdrvChild pointer
to NULL, too.
This patch lays the foundation for it by passing a BdrvChild ** pointer
to bdrv_replace_child_noperm() so that it can later use it to NULL the
BdrvChild pointer immediately after setting BdrvChild.bs to NULL.
(We will still need to undertake some intermediate steps, though.)

bdrv_attach_child_common_abort() restores the parent's AioContext. To
do so, the child (which was supposed to be attached, but is now detached
again by this abort handler) is added to the ignore list for the
AioContext changing functions.
However, since we modify a BDS's children list in the BdrvChildClass's
.attach and .detach handlers, the child is already effectively detached
from the parent by this point. We do not need to put it into the ignore
list.
Use this opportunity to clean up the empty line structure: Keep setting
the ignore list, invoking the AioContext function, and freeing the
ignore list in blocks separated by empty lines.

Now that bdrv_remove_empty_child() no longer removes the child from the
parent's children list but only checks that it is not in such a list, it
is only a wrapper around bdrv_child_free() that checks that the child is
empty and unused. That should apply to all children that we free, so
put those checks into bdrv_child_free() and drop
bdrv_remove_empty_child().

The children list is specific to BDS parents. We should not modify it
in the general children modification code, but let BDS parents deal with
it in their .attach() and .detach() methods.
This also has the advantage that a BdrvChild is removed from the
children list before its .bs pointer can become NULL. BDS parents
generally assume that their children's .bs pointer is never NULL, so
this is actually a bug fix.

Use bdrv_new_open_driver_opts() instead of complicated bdrv_open().
Among other extra things bdrv_open() also check for white-listed
formats, which we don't want for internal node creation: currently
backup doesn't work when copy-before-write filter is not white-listed.
As well block-stream doesn't work when copy-on-read is not
white-listed.

We must not inactivate child when parent has write permissions on
it.
Calling .bdrv_inactivate() doesn't help: actually only qcow2 has this
handler and it is used to flush caches, not for permission
manipulations.
So, let's simply check cumulative parent permissions before
inactivating the node.
This commit fixes a crash when we do migration during backup: prior to
the commit nothing prevents all nodes inactivation at migration finish
and following backup write to the target crashes on assertion
"assert(!(bs->open_flags & BDRV_O_INACTIVE));" in
bdrv_co_write_req_prepare().
After the commit, we rely on the fact that copy-before-write filter
keeps write permission on target node to be able to write to it. So
inactivation fails and migration fails as expected.
Corresponding test now passes, so, enable it.

As we have attempted before

"file-posix: Cache next hole"), this patch seeks to reduce the number of
SEEK_DATA/HOLE operations the file-posix driver has to perform. The
main difference is that this time it is implemented as part of the
general block layer code.
The problem we face is that on some filesystems or in some
circumstances, SEEK_DATA/HOLE is unreasonably slow. Given the
implementation is outside of qemu, there is little we can do about its
performance.
We have already introduced the want_zero parameter to
bdrv_co_block_status() to reduce the number of SEEK_DATA/HOLE calls
unless we really want zero information; but sometimes we do want that
information, because for files that consist largely of zero areas,
special-casing those areas can give large performance boosts. So the
real problem is with files that consist largely of data, so that
inquiring the block status does not gain us much performance, but where
such an inquiry itself takes a lot of time.
To address this, we want to cache data regions. Most of the time, when
bad performance is reported, it is in places where the image is iterated
over from start to end (qemu-img convert or the mirror job), so a simple
yet effective solution is to cache only the current data region.
(Note that only caching data regions but not zero regions means that
returning false information from the cache is not catastrophic: Treating
zeroes as data is fine. While we try to invalidate the cache on zero
writes and discards, such incongruences may still occur when there are
other processes writing to the image.)
We only use the cache for nodes without children (i.e. protocol nodes),
because that is where the problem is: Drivers that rely on block-status
implementations outside of qemu (e.g. SEEK_DATA/HOLE).

Currently, the block driver whitelists are only applied for the system
emulator. All other binaries still give unrestricted access to all block
drivers. There are use cases where this made sense because the main
concern was avoiding customers running VMs on less optimised block
drivers and getting bad performance. Allowing the same image format e.g.
as a target for 'qemu-img convert' is not a problem then.
However, if the concern is the supportability of the driver in general,
either in full or when used read-write, not applying the list driver
whitelist in tools doesn't help - especially since qemu-nbd and
qemu-storage-daemon now give access to more or less the same operations
in block drivers as running a system emulator.
In order to address this, introduce a new configure option that enforces
the driver whitelist in all binaries.

As the BlockReopenQueue can contain nodes in multiple AioContexts, only
one of which may be locked when AIO_WAIT_WHILE() can be called, we can't
let the caller lock the right contexts. Instead, individually lock the
AioContext of a single node when iterating the queue.
Reintroduce bdrv_reopen() as a wrapper for reopening a single node that
drains the node and temporarily drops the AioContext lock for
bdrv_reopen_multiple().

Back in commit d9f059aa6c (qemu-img: Deprecate use of -b without -F),
we deprecated the ability to create a file with a backing image that
requires qemu to perform format probing. Qemu can still probe older
files for backwards compatibility, but it is time to finish off the
ability to create such images, due to the potential security risk they
present. Update a couple of iotests affected by the change.

When the x-blockdev-reopen was added it allowed reconfiguring the
graph by replacing backing files, but changing the 'file' option was
forbidden. Because of this restriction some operations are not
possible, notably inserting and removing block filters.
This patch adds support for replacing the 'file' option. This is
similar to replacing the backing file and the user is likewise
responsible for the correctness of the resulting graph, otherwise this
can lead to data corruption.

It's used only in bdrv_reopen_commit(). "backing" is covered by the
loop through all children except for case when we removed backing child
during reopen.
Make it more obvious and drop extra boolean field: qdict_del will not
fail if there is no such entry.

Move supports_backing check of bdrv_reopen_parse_backing to called
(through bdrv_set_backing_noperm()) bdrv_set_file_or_backing_noperm()
function. The check applies to general case, so it's appropriate for
bdrv_set_file_or_backing_noperm().
We have to declare backing support for two test drivers, otherwise new
check fails.

The logic around finding overlay here is not obvious. Actually it does
two simple things:
1. If new bs is already in backing chain, split from parent bs by
several implicit filters we are done, do nothing.
2. Otherwise, don't try to replace implicit filter.
Let's rewrite this in more obvious way.

Notes:
- It seems OK to update inherits_from if new bs is recursively inherits
from parent bs. Let's just not check for backing_chain_contains, to
support file child of non-filters.
- Simply check child->frozen instead of
bdrv_is_backing_chain_frozen(), as we really interested only in this
one child.
- Role determination of new child is a bit more complex: it remains
the same for backing child, it's obvious for filter driver. But for
non-filter file child let's for now restrict to only replacing
existing child (and keeping its role).

We have bdrv_replace_child() wrapper on bdrv_replace_child_noperm().
But bdrv_replace_child() doesn't update permissions. It's rather
strange, as normally it's expected that foo() should call foo_noperm()
and update permissions.
Let's rename and add comment.

When creating an image file with a backing file, we generally try to
open the backing file (unless -u was specified), mostly to verify that
it is there, but also to get the file size if none was specified for the
new image.
For neither of these things do we need data I/O, and so we can pass
BDRV_O_NO_IO when opening the backing file. This allows us to open even
encrypted backing images without requiring the user to provide a secret.
This makes the -u switch in iotests 189 and 198 unnecessary (and the
$size parameter), so drop it, because this way we get regression tests
for this patch here.

Commit 3108a15cf (block: introduce bdrv_drop_filter()) introduced
uninitialized variable to_cow_parent in bdrv_replace_node_common
function that is used only when detach_subchain is true. It is used in
two places. First if block properly initialize the variable and second
block use it.
However, compiler may treat these two blocks as two independent cases so
it thinks first block can fail test and second one pass (although both
use same condition). This cause warning that variable can be
uninitialized in second block.
The warning was observed with GCC 8.4.1 and 11.0.1.
To prevent this warning, initialize the variable with NULL.

Now permissions are updated as follows:
1. do graph modifications ignoring permissions
2. do permission update
(of course, we rollback [1] if [2] fails)
So, on stage [2] we can't say which users are "old" and which are
"new" and exist only since [1]. And current error message is a bit
outdated. Let's improve it, to make everything clean.
While being here, add also a comment and some good assertions.
iotests 283, 307, qsd-jobs outputs are updated.

We have different types of parents: block nodes, block backends and
jobs. So, it makes sense to specify type together with name.
Next, this handler us used to compose an error message about permission
conflict. And permission conflict occurs in a specific place of block
graph. We shouldn't report name of parent device (as it refers another
place in block graph), but exactly and only the name of the node. So,
use bdrv_get_node_name() directly.
iotest 283 output is updated.

It's better to use accessor function instead of bs->read_only directly.
In some places use bdrv_is_writable() instead of
checking both BDRV_O_RDWR set and BDRV_O_INACTIVE not set.
In bdrv_open_common() it's a bit strange to add one more variable, but
we are going to drop bs->read_only in the next patch, so new ro local
variable substitutes it here.

Now, bdrv_node_check_perm() is called only with fresh cumulative
permissions, so its actually "refresh_perm".
Move permission calculation to the function. Also, drop unreachable
error message and rewrite the remaining one to be more generic (as now
we don't know which node is added and which was already here).
Add also Virtuozzo copyright, as big work is done at this point.

Old interfaces dropped, nobody directly calls
bdrv_child_set_perm_abort() and bdrv_child_set_perm_commit(), so we can
use personal state structure for the action and stop exploiting

Move bdrv_reopen_multiple to new paradigm of permission update:
first update graph relations, then do refresh the permissions.
We have to modify reopen process in file-posix driver: with new scheme
we don't have prepared permissions in raw_reopen_prepare(), so we
should reconfigure fd in raw_check_perm(). Still this seems more native
and simple anyway.

During reopen we may add backing bs from other aio context, which may
lead to changing original context of top bs.
We are going to move graph modification to prepare stage. So, it will
be possible that bdrv_flush() in bdrv_reopen_prepare called on bs in
non-original aio context, which we didn't aquire which leads to crash.
To avoid this problem move bdrv_flush() to be a separate reopen stage
before bdrv_reopen_prepare().
This doesn't seem correct to acquire only one aio context and not all
contexts participating in reopen. But it's not obvious how to do it
correctly, keeping in mind:
1. rules of bdrv_set_aio_context_ignore() that requires new_context
lock not being held
2. possible deadlocks because of holding all (or several?) AioContext
locks

Split out no-perm part of bdrv_set_backing_hd() as a separate
transaction action. Note the in case of existing BdrvChild we reuse it,
not recreate, just to do less actions.
We don't need to create extra reference to backing_hd as we don't lose
it in bdrv_attach_child().

Using bdrv_replace_node() for removing filter is not good enough: it
keeps child reference of the filter, which may conflict with original
top node during permission update.
Instead let's create new interface, which will do all graph
modifications first and then update permissions.
Let's modify bdrv_replace_node_common(), allowing it additionally drop
backing chain child link pointing to new node. This is quite
appropriate for bdrv_drop_intermediate() and makes possible to add
new bdrv_drop_filter() as a simple wrapper.

bdrv_append is not very good for inserting filters: it does extra
permission update as part of bdrv_set_backing_hd(). During this update
filter may conflict with other parents of top_bs.
Instead, let's first do all graph modifications and after it update
permissions.
append-greedy-filter test-case in test-bdrv-graph-mod is now works, so
move it out of debug option.
Note: bdrv_append() is still only works for backing-child based
filters. It's something to improve later.
Note2: we use the fact that bdrv_append() is used to append new nodes,
without backing child, so we don't need frozen check and inherits_from
logic from bdrv_set_backing_hd().

permission update paradigm: first update graph relations then update
permissions.
qsd-jobs test output updated. Seems now permission update goes in
another order. Still, the test comment say that we only want to check
that command doesn't crash, and it's still so.
Error message is a bit misleading as it looks like job was added first.
But actually in new paradigm of graph update we can't distinguish such
things. We should update the error message, but let's not do it now.

inore_children thing doesn't help to track all propagated permissions
of children we want to ignore. The simplest way to correctly update
permissions is update graph first and then do permission update. In
this case we just referesh permissions for the whole subgraph (in
topological-sort defined order) and everything is correctly calculated
automatically without any ignore_children.
So, refactor bdrv_replace_node_common to first do graph update and then
refresh the permissions.
Test test_parallel_exclusive_write() now pass, so move it out of
debugging "if".

Rewrite bdrv_check_perm(), bdrv_abort_perm_update() and bdrv_set_perm()
to update nodes in topological sort order instead of simple DFS. With
topologically sorted nodes, we update a node only when all its parents
already updated. With DFS it's not so.
Consider the following example:

A is parent for B and C, B is parent for C.
Obviously, to update permissions, we should go in order A B C, so, when
we update C, all parent permissions already updated. But with current
approach (simple recursion) we can update in sequence A C B C (C is
updated twice). On first update of C, we consider old B permissions, so
doing wrong thing. If it succeed, all is OK, on second C update we will
finish with correct graph. But if the wrong thing failed, we break the
whole process for no reason (it's possible that updated B permission
will be less strict, but we will never check it).
Also new approach gives a way to simultaneously and correctly update
several nodes, we just need to run bdrv_topological_dfs() several times
to add all nodes and their subtrees into one topologically sorted list
(next patch will update bdrv_replace_node() in this manner).
Test test_parallel_perm_update() is now passing, so move it out of
debugging "if".
We also need to support ignore_children in
bdrv_parent_perms_conflict()
For test 283 order of conflicting parents check is changed.
Note also that in bdrv_check_perm() we don't check for parents conflict
at root bs, as we may be in the middle of permission update in
bdrv_reopen_multiple(). bdrv_reopen_multiple() will be updated soon.

Add additional check that node parents do not interfere with each
other. This should not hurt existing callers and allows in further
patch use bdrv_refresh_perms() to update a subtree of changed
BdrvChild (check that change is correct).
New check will substitute bdrv_check_update_perm() in following
permissions refactoring, so keep error messages the same to avoid
unit test result changes.

We have too much comments for this feature. It seems better just don't
do it. Most of real users (tests don't count) have to create additional
reference.
Drop also comment in external_snapshot_prepare:
- bdrv_append doesn't "remove" old bs in common sense, it sounds
strange
- the fact that bdrv_append can fail is obvious from the context
- the fact that we must rollback all changes in transaction abort is
known (it's the direct role of abort)

QemuOpts is usually created merging the QemuOptsList of format
and protocol. So, when the format calls bdr_create_file(), the 'opts'
parameter contains a QemuOptsList with a combination of format and
protocol default values.
The format properly removes its options before calling
bdr_create_file(), but the default values remain in 'opts->list'.
So if the protocol has options with the same name (e.g. rbd has
'cluster_size' as qcow2), it will see the default values of the format,
since for overlapping options, the format wins.
To avoid this issue, lets convert QemuOpts to QDict, in this way we take
only the set options, and then convert it back to QemuOpts, using the
'create_opts' of the protocol. So the new QemuOpts, will contain only the
protocol defaults.

Some error messages contain ambiguous representations of the 'node-name'
parameter. This can be particularly confusing when exchanging QMP
messages (C = client, S = server):

This function wraps bdrv_co_delete_file for the common case of removing a file,
which was just created by format driver, on an error condition.
It hides the -ENOTSUPP error, and reports all other errors otherwise.

The recommended use of qemu error api assumes returning status together
with setting errp and avoid void functions with errp parameter. Let's
improve bdrv_append and some friends to reduce error-propagation
overhead in further patches.
Choose int return status, because bdrv_replace_node_common() has call
to bdrv_check_update_perm(), which reports int status, which seems
correct to propagate.

Move blk_exp_close_all() from bdrv_close() to qemu_cleanup(), before
bdrv_drain_all_begin().
Export drivers may have coroutines yielding at some point in the block
layer, so we need to shut them down before draining the block layer,
as otherwise they may get stuck blk_wait_while_drained().

Some graphs may contain an indirect reference to the first BDS in the
chain that can be reached while walking it bottom->up from one its
children.
Doubling-processing of a BDS is especially problematic for the
aio_notifiers, as they might attempt to work on both the old and the
new AIO contexts.
To avoid this problem, add every child and parent to the ignore list
before actually processing them.

QString supports modifying its string, but it's quite limited: you can
only append. Just one caller remains:
bdrv_parse_filename_strip_prefix() uses it just for building an
initial string.
Change it to do build the initial string with GString. This is
another step towards making QString immutable.

qobject_to_json() and qobject_to_json_pretty() build a GString, then
covert it to QString. Just one of the callers actually needs a
QString: qemu_rbd_parse_filename(). A few others need a string they
can modify: qmp_send_response(), qga's send_response(), to_json_str(),
and qmp_fd_vsend_fds(). The remainder just need a string.
Change qobject_to_json() and qobject_to_json_pretty() to return the
GString.
qemu_rbd_parse_filename() now has to convert to QString. All others
save a QString temporary. to_json_str() actually becomes a bit
simpler, because GString provides more convenient modification
functions.

Do generic processing even for drivers which define .bdrv_check_perm
handler. It's needed for further preallocate filter: it will need to do
additional action on bdrv_check_perm, but don't want to reimplement
generic logic.
The patch doesn't change existing behaviour: the only driver that
implements bdrv_check_perm is file-posix, but it never has any
children.
Also, bdrv_set_perm() don't stop processing if driver has
.bdrv_set_perm handler as well.

The only users of this thing are:
1. bdrv_child_try_set_perm, to ignore failures on loosen restrictions
2. assertion in bdrv_replace_child
3. assertion in bdrv_inactivate_recurse
Assertions are not enough reason for overcomplication the permission
update system. So, look at bdrv_child_try_set_perm.
We are interested in tighten_restrictions only on failure. But on
failure this field is not reliable: we may fail in the middle of
permission update, some nodes are not touched and we don't know should
their permissions be tighten or not. So, we rely on the fact that if we
loose restrictions on some node (or BdrvChild), we'll not tighten
restriction in the whole subtree as part of this update (assertions 2
and 3 rely on this fact as well). And, if we rely on this fact anyway,
we can just check it on top, and don't pass additional pointer through
the whole recursive infrastructure.
Note also, that further patches will fix real bugs in permission update
system, so now is good time to simplify it, as a help for further
refactorings.

We should never set permissions other than cumulative permissions of
parents. During bdrv_reopen_multiple() we _check_ for synthetic
permissions but when we do _set_ the graph is already updated.

We are going to modify block layer to work with 64bit requests. And
first step is moving to int64_t type for both offset and bytes
arguments in all block request related functions.
It's mostly safe (when widening signed or unsigned int to int64_t), but
switching from uint64_t is questionable.
So, let's first establish the set of requests we want to work with.
First signed int64_t should be enough, as off_t is signed anyway. Then,
obviously offset + bytes should not overflow.
And most interesting: (offset + bytes) being aligned up should not
overflow as well. Aligned to what alignment? First thing that comes in
mind is bs->bl.request_alignment, as we align up request to this
alignment. But there is another thing: look at
bdrv_mark_request_serialising(). It aligns request up to some given
alignment. And this parameter may be bdrv_get_cluster_size(), which is
often a lot greater than bs->bl.request_alignment.
Note also, that bdrv_mark_request_serialising() uses signed int64_t for
calculations. So, actually, we already depend on some restrictions.
Happily, bdrv_get_cluster_size() returns int and
bs->bl.request_alignment has 32bit unsigned type, but defined to be a
power of 2 less than INT_MAX. So, we may establish, that INT_MAX is
absolute maximum for any kind of alignment that may occur with the
request.
Note, that bdrv_get_cluster_size() is not documented to return power
of 2, still bdrv_mark_request_serialising() behaves like it is.
Also, backup uses bdi.cluster_size and is not prepared to it not being
power of 2.
So, let's establish that Qemu supports only power-of-2 clusters and
alignments.
So, alignment can't be greater than 2^30.
Finally to be safe with calculations, to not calculate different
maximums for different nodes (depending on cluster size and
request_alignment), let's simply set QEMU_ALIGN_DOWN(INT64_MAX, 2^30)
as absolute maximum bytes length for Qemu. Actually, it's not much less
than INT64_MAX.
OK, then, let's apply it to block/io.
Let's consider all block/io entry points of offset/bytes:
4 bytes/offset interface functions: bdrv_co_preadv_part(),
bdrv_co_pwritev_part(), bdrv_co_copy_range_internal() and
bdrv_co_pdiscard() and we check them all with bdrv_check_request().
We also have one entry point with only offset: bdrv_co_truncate().
Check the offset.
And one public structure: BdrvTrackedRequest. Happily, it has only
three external users:
file-posix.c: adopted by this patch
write-threshold.c: only read fields
test-write-threshold.c: sets obviously small constant values
Better is to make the structure private and add corresponding
interfaces.. Still it's not obvious what kind of interface is needed
for file-posix.c. Let's keep it public but add corresponding
assertions.
After this patch we'll convert functions in block/io.c to int64_t bytes
and offset parameters. We can assume that offset/bytes pair always
satisfy new restrictions, and make
corresponding assertions where needed. If we reach some offset/bytes
point in block/io.c missing bdrv_check_request() it is considered a
bug. As well, if block/io.c modifies a offset/bytes request, expanding
it more then aligning up to request_alignment, it's a bug too.
For all io requests except for discard we keep for now old restriction
of 32bit request length.
iotest 206 output error message changed, as now test disk size is
larger than new limit. Add one more test case with new maximum disk
size to cover too-big-L1 case.

block-export-add type=fuse allows mounting block graph nodes via FUSE on
some existing regular file. That file should then appears like a raw
disk image, and accesses to it result in accesses to the exported BDS.
Right now, we only implement the necessary block export functions to set
it up and shut it down. We do not implement any access functions, so
accessing the mount point only results in errors. This will be
addressed by a followup patch.
We keep a hash table of exported mount points, because we want to be
able to detect when users try to use a mount point twice. This is
because we invoke stat() to check whether the given mount point is a
regular file, but if that file is served by ourselves (because it is
already used as a mount point), then this stat() would have to be served
by ourselves, too, which is impossible to do while we (as the caller)
are waiting for it to settle. Therefore, keep track of mount point
paths to at least catch the most obvious instances of that problem.

First, permission update loop tries to do iterations transactionally,
but the whole update is not transactional: nobody roll-back successful
loop iterations when some iteration fails.
Second, in the iteration we have nested permission update:
c->klass->update_filename may point to bdrv_child_cb_update_filename()
which calls bdrv_backing_update_filename(), which may do node reopen to
RW.
Permission update system is not prepared to nested updates, at least it
has intermediate permission-update state stored in BdrvChild
structures: has_backup_perm, backup_perm and backup_shared_perm.
So, let's first do bdrv_replace_node_common() (which is more
transactional than open-coded update in bdrv_drop_intermediate()) and
then call update_filename() in separate. We still do not rollback
changes in case of update_filename() failure but it's not much worse
than pre-patch behavior.
Note that bdrv_replace_node_common() does check for frozen children,
so corresponding check is dropped in bdrv_drop_intermediate().

Add new parameter to bdrv_replace_node(): auto_skip. With
auto_skip=false we'll have stricter behavior: update _all_ from
parents or fail. New behaviour will be used in the following commit in
block.c, so keep original function name as public interface.
Note: new error message is a bit funny in contrast with further
"Cannot" in case of frozen child, but we'd better keep some difference
to make it possible to distinguish one from another on failure. Still,
actually we'd better refactor should_update_child() call to distinguish
also different kinds of "should not". Let's do it later.
