Also in preparation for handling more binaries from the cross binutils,
support an option --cross-prefix-ARCH. All cross_cc_* defaults are
replaced with cross_prefix_*; the cross_cc_* fallbacks are extended

as well. This way, for example, --cross-cc-arm=arm-linux-gnueabihf-clang

cd362defbb tests/tcg: merge configure.sh back into main configure script
tests/tcg/configure.sh has a complicated story.

In the beginning its code ran as part of the creation of config-target.mak
files, and that is where it placed the information on the target compiler.
However, probing for the buildability of TCG tests required multiple
inclusions of config-target.mak in the _main_ Makefile (not in
Makefile.target, which took care of building the QEMU executables in
the pre-Meson era), which polluted the namespace.

Thus, it was moved to a separate directory. It created small config-*.mak
files in $(BUILD_DIR)/tests/tcg. Those were also included multiple
times, but at least they were small and manageable; this was also an
important step in disentangling the TCG tests from Makefile.target.

Since then, Meson has allowed the configure script to go on a diet.
A few compilation tests survive (mostly for sanitizers) but these days
it mostly takes care of command line parsing, looking for tools, and
setting up the environment for Meson to do its stuff.

It's time to extend configure with the capability to build for more
than just one target: not just tests, but also firmware. As a first
step, integrate all the logic to find cross compilers in the configure
script, and move tests/tcg/configure.sh back there (though as a
separate loop, not integrated in the one that generates target
configurations for Meson).

tests/tcg is actually very close to being buildable as a standalone
project, so I actually expect the compiler tests to move back to
tests/tcg, as a "configure" script of sorts which would run at Make
time after the docker images are built. The GCC tree has a similar idea
of doing only bare-bones tree-wide configuration and leaving the rest
for Make time.

0ce9b08c10 docs/about: Update the support statement for Windows
Our support statement for Windows currently talks about "Vista / Server
2008" - which is related to the API of Windows, and this is not easy
to understand for the non-technical users. Additionally, glib sets the
_WIN32_WINNT macro to 0x0601 already, which indicates the Windows 7 API,
so QEMU effectively depends on the Windows 7 API, too.

Thus let's bump the _WIN32_WINNT setting in QEMU to the same level as
glib uses and adjust our support statement in the documentation to
something similar that we're using for Linux and the *BSD systems
(i.e. only the two most recent versions), which should hopefully be
easier to understand for the users now.

And since we're nowadays also compile-testing QEMU with MSYS2 on Windows
itself, I think we could mention this build environment here, too.

eb9baecdb3 configure, meson: allow enabling vhost-user on all POSIX systems

a5730b8bd3 block/file-posix: Simplify the XFS_IOC_DIOINFO handling
The handling for the XFS_IOC_DIOINFO ioctl is currently quite excessive:
This is not a "real" feature like the other features that we provide with
the "--enable-xxx" and "--disable-xxx" switches for the configure script,
since this does not influence lots of code (it's only about one call to
xfsctl() in file-posix.c), so people don't gain much with the ability to
disable this with "--disable-xfsctl".
It's also unfortunate that the ioctl will be disabled on Linux in case
the user did not install the right xfsprogs-devel package before running
configure. Thus let's simplify this by providing the ioctl definition
on our own, so we can completely get rid of the header dependency and
thus the related code in the configure script.

dfcf900ba6 configure, meson.build: Mark support for loongarch64 hosts
Example output of `uname -a` on an initial Gentoo LA64 port, running
the upstream submission version of Linux (with some very minor patches
not influencing output here):

And the same on the vendor-supplied Loongnix 20 system, with an early
in-house port of Linux, and using the old-world ABI:

> Linux <hostname> 4.19.167-rc5.lnd.1-loongson-3 #1 SMP Sat Apr 17 07:32:32 UTC 2021 loongarch64 loongarch64 loongarch64 GNU/Linux

4da270be1c configure: unify x86_64 and x32
The only difference between the two, as far as either configure or
Meson are concerned, is in the multilib flags passed to the compiler.

For QEMU, this fixes the handling of TYPE_OLDDEVT in

because both are using HOST_X86_64.

For tests/tcg, this means that on a hypothetical x32 host the

bbbd9b6ec6 tests/acceptance: rename tests acceptance to tests avocado
In the discussion about renaming the `tests/acceptance` [1], the
conclusion was that the folders inside `tests` are related to the
framework running the tests and not directly related to the type of
the tests.

This changes the folder to `tests/avocado` and adjusts the MAKEFILE, the
CI related files and the documentation.

a286666044 configure: propagate --extra-cflags and --extra-ldflags to meson compile tests
Meson (intentionally) does not add QEMU_CFLAGS to cc.compiles/cc.links
tests, as they are supposed to be independent of the specific sets of
compilation flags used to build the programs. However, the user can
still use CFLAGS or the toolchain file's LANG_args/LANG_link_args option
to specify -I or -L options that apply to cc.compiles/cc.links as well.

This is also the intended use of configure's --extra-cflags,
--extra-cxxflags and --extra-ldflags options. For example, if
one has netmap's header in a nonstandard directory, up to commit
837b84b1c0 it used to work fine to do:

.../configure --enable-netmap \
     --extra-cflags=-I/path/to/netmap/sys

but since the test was converted to meson, this does not work anymore.

Pass these options to meson via the toolchain file instead of via
config-host.mak, since both have the same purpose.

6638cae5f6 meson: bump submodule to 0.59.3
This gains some bugfixes, especially:

- it fixes the introspection of array options. While technically we
still support Meson 0.58.2, this issue only appears when adding a new
option and not if the user is just building QEMU. In the relatively
rare case of a contributor using --meson to point to a 0.58 version,
review can catch spurious changes to scripts/meson-buildoptions.sh
easily.

- it fixes "meson test" when it is not the process group leader. Make is
the process group leader when "make check" invokes "meson test", so this
is a requirement for using it as a test harness.

ff66ee5369 configure: do not duplicate CPU_CFLAGS into QEMU_LDFLAGS
Since commit 4dba278908 ("configure, meson: move CPU_CFLAGS out of

added separately to QEMU_LDFLAGS.

ffd205ef29 Partially revert "build: -no-pie is no functional linker flag"
This partially reverts commit bbd2d5a812.

This commit was misguided and broke using --disable-pie on any distro
that enables PIE by default in their compiler driver, including Debian
and its derivatives. Whilst -no-pie is not a linker flag, it is a
compiler driver flag that ensures -pie is not automatically passed by it
to the linker. Without it, all compile_prog checks will fail as any code
built with the explicit -fno-pie will fail to link with the implicit
default -pie due to trying to use position-dependent relocations. The
only bug that needed fixing was LDFLAGS_NOPIE being used as a flag for
the linker itself in pc-bios/optionrom/Makefile.

Note this does not reinstate exporting LDFLAGS_NOPIE, as it is unused,
since the only previous use was the one that should not have existed. I
have also updated the comment for the -fno-pie and -no-pie checks to
reflect what they're actually needed for.

3b4da13293 configure: automatically parse command line for meson -D options
Right now meson_options.txt lists about 90 options. Each option
needs code in configure to parse it and pass the option down to Meson as
a -D command-line argument; in addition the default must be duplicated
between configure and meson_options.txt. This series tries to remove
the code duplication by generating the case statement for those --enable
and --disable options, as well as the corresponding help text.

About 80% of the options can be handled completely by the new mechanism.
Eight meson options are not of the --enable/--disable kind. Six more need
to be parsed in configure for various reasons documented in the patch,
but they still have their help automatically generated.

The advantages are:

- less code in configure

- parsing and help is more consistent (for example --enable-blobs was
  not supported)

- options are described entirely in one place, meson_options.txt.
This make it more attractive to use Meson options instead of
  hand-crafted configure options and config-host.mak

A few options change name: --enable-tcmalloc and --enable-jemalloc
become --enable-malloc={tcmalloc,jemalloc}; --disable-blobs becomes
--disable-install-blobs; --enable-trace-backend becomes
--enable-trace-backends. However, the old names are allowed
for backwards compatibility.

Prepare the configure script and Makefile for automatically generated

Because we need to run the script to generate the full help, we

in Python as standard for QEMU, and this commit contains a stub.

b906acace2 plugins: do not limit exported symbols if modules are active
On Mac --enable-modules and --enable-plugins are currently incompatible, because the
Apple -Wl,-exported_symbols_list command line options prevents the export of any
symbols needed by the modules. On x86 -Wl,--dynamic-list does not have this effect,
but only because the -Wl,--export-dynamic option provided by gmodule-2.0.pc overrides
it. On Apple there is no -Wl,--export-dynamic, because it is the default, and thus
no override.

Either way, when modules are active there is no reason to include the plugin_ldflags.
While at it, avoid the useless -Wl,--export-dynamic when --enable-plugins is
specified but --enable-modules is not; this way, the GNU and Apple configurations
are more similar.

dfc86c0f25 fuzz: add an instrumentation filter
By default, -fsanitize=fuzzer instruments all code with coverage
information. However, this means that libfuzzer will track coverage over
hundreds of source files that are unrelated to virtual-devices. This
means that libfuzzer will optimize inputs for coverage observed in timer
code, memory APIs etc. This slows down the fuzzer and stores many inputs
that are not relevant to the actual virtual-devices.

With this change, clang versions that support the
"-fsanitize-coverage-allowlist" will only instrument a subset of the
compiled code, that is directly related to virtual-devices.

5b945f23d6 configure: Add -Werror to avx2, avx512 tests
When using clang, we get

ERROR: configure test passed without -Werror but failed with -Werror.
This is probably a bug in the configure script. The failing command
will be at the bottom of config.log.
You can run configure with --disable-werror to bypass this check.

What we really want from these two tests is whether the
entire code sequence is supported, including pragmas.
Adding -Werror makes the test properly fail for clang.

The "xen" variable should either contain "enabled", "disabled" or

e5f05f8c37 block: Add option to use driver whitelist even in tools
Currently, the block driver whitelists are only applied for the system
emulator. All other binaries still give unrestricted access to all block
drivers. There are use cases where this made sense because the main
concern was avoiding customers running VMs on less optimised block
drivers and getting bad performance. Allowing the same image format e.g.
as a target for 'qemu-img convert' is not a problem then.

However, if the concern is the supportability of the driver in general,
either in full or when used read-write, not applying the list driver
whitelist in tools doesn't help - especially since qemu-nbd and
qemu-storage-daemon now give access to more or less the same operations
in block drivers as running a system emulator.

In order to address this, introduce a new configure option that enforces
the driver whitelist in all binaries.

659eb157a5 configure: Fix endianess test with LTO
If a user is trying to compile QEMU with link-time optimization
enabled by running the configure script like this:

 .../configure --extra-cflags="-flto"

then the endianess test is failing since the magic values do not
show up in the intermediate object files there. If the host is
a big endian machine (like s390x), the QEMU binary is then unusable
since the corresponding variable "bigendian" is pre-initialized
with "no".

To fix this issue, we should rather create a full binary and look
for the magic strings there instead.
And we really should not continue the build if the endianess check
failed, to make it clear right from the start that something went
wrong here, thus let's also add some "exit 1" statements here
after emitting the error message.

ba4dd2aabc tcg/plugins: enable by default for most TCG builds
Aside from a minor bloat to file size the ability to have TCG plugins
has no real impact on performance unless a plugin is actively loaded.
Even then the libempty.so plugin shows only a minor degradation in
performance caused by the extra book keeping the TCG has to do to keep
track of instructions. As it's a useful feature lets just enable it by
default and reduce our testing matrix a little.

We need to move our linker testing earlier so we can be sure we can
enable the loader module required. As we have ruled out static &
plugins in an earlier patch we can also reduce the indent a little.

The next version of lttng-libs will not require liburcu at run time anymore.
Therefore, it is expected that distros will not include the urcubp libraries

To avoid future problems, just require pkg-config to detect lttng-ust.

3af448b386 configure: Check whether we can compile the s390-ccw bios with -msoft-float
The -msoft-float switch is not available in older versions of Clang.
Since we rely on the compiler to not generate floating point instructions
unexpectedly, we block those old compilers now via a test in the configure
script. Note that for some weird reasons, the Clang compiler only complains
about the missing soft-float support if no other flags are passed via
"-Wl,..." to the linker. So we have to use "compile_object" instead of
"compile_prog" for this check.

96ff758c6e linux-user: Use public sigev_notify_thread_id member if available
_sigev_un._tid is an internal glibc field and is not available on
musl libc. The sigevent(7) man page and Linux UAPI headers both use
sigev_notify_thread_id as a public way to access this field.

musl libc supports this field since 1.2.2[0], and glibc plans to
add support as well[1][2].

If sigev_notify_thread_id is not available, fall back to _sigev_un._tid
as before.

b4c10fc6fe block/ssh: Bump minimum libssh version to 0.8.7
It has been over two years since RHEL-8 was released, and thus per the
platform build policy, we no longer need to support RHEL-7 as a build
target. So from the RHEL-7 perspective, we do not have to support
libssh v0.7 anymore now.

Let's look at the versions from other distributions and operating
systems - according to repology.org, current shipping versions are:

             RHEL-8: 0.9.4
      Debian Buster: 0.8.7
 openSUSE Leap 15.2: 0.8.7
   Ubuntu LTS 18.04: 0.8.0 *
   Ubuntu LTS 20.04: 0.9.3
            FreeBSD: 0.9.5
          Fedora 33: 0.9.5
          Fedora 34: 0.9.5
            OpenBSD: 0.9.5
     macOS HomeBrew: 0.9.5
         HaikuPorts: 0.9.5

* The version of libssh in Ubuntu 18.04 claims to be 0.8.0 from the
name of the package, but in reality it is a 0.7 patched up as a
Frankenstein monster with patches from the 0.8 development branch.
This gave us some headaches in the past already and so it never worked
with QEMU. All attempts to get it supported have failed in the past,
patches for QEMU have never been merged and a request to Ubuntu to
fix it in their 18.04 distro has been ignored:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libssh/+bug/1847514

Thus we really should ignore the libssh in Ubuntu 18.04 in QEMU, too.

Fix it by bumping the minimum libssh version to something that is
greater than 0.8.0 now. Debian Buster and openSUSE Leap have the
oldest version and so 0.8.7 is the new minimum.

54b0306e69 configure: Avoid error messages about missing *-config-*.h files
When compiling with --disable-system there is a harmless yet still
annoying error message at the end of the "configure" step:

sed: can't read *-config-devices.h: No such file or directory

When only building the tools or docs, without any emulator at all,
there is even an additional message about missing *-config-target.h

Fix it by checking whether any of these files are available before
using them.

e0447a834d configure: Poison all current target-specific #defines
We are generating a lot of target-specific defines in the *-config-devices.h
and *-config-target.h files. Using them in common code is wrong and leads
to very subtle bugs since a "#ifdef CONFIG_SOMETHING" is not working there
as expected. To avoid these issues, we are already poisoning many of the
macros in include/exec/poison.h - but it's cumbersome to maintain this
list manually. Thus let's generate an additional list of poisoned macros
automatically from the current config switches - this should give us a
much better test coverage via the different CI configurations.

Note that CONFIG_TCG (which is also defined in config-host.h) and
CONFIG_USER_ONLY are special, so we have to filter these out.

5ecfb76ccc configure: fix detection of gdbus-codegen
"pkg-config --variable=gdbus_codegen gio-2.0" returns "gdbus-codegen",
and it does not pass test -x (which does not walk the path).

Meson 0.58.0 notices that something is iffy, as the dbus_vmstate1
assignment in tests/qtest/meson.build uses an empty string as the
command, and fails very eloquently:

../tests/qtest/meson.build:92:2: ERROR: No program name specified.

Use the "has" function instead of test -x, and fix the generation
of config-host.mak since meson.build expects that GDBUS_CODEGEN
is absent, rather than empty, if the tool is unavailable.

a5b2afd522 pc-bios/s390-ccw: Allow building with Clang, too
Clang unfortunately does not support generating code for the z900
architecture level and starts with the z10 instead. Thus to be able
to support compiling with Clang, we have to check for the supported
compiler flags. The disadvantage is of course that the bios image
will only run with z10 guest CPUs upwards (which is what most people
use anyway), so just in case let's also emit a warning in that case
(we will continue to ship firmware images that have been pre-built
with GCC in future releases, so this should not impact normal users,
too).

699d388430 configure: handle meson options that have changed type
Usually Meson uses pre-serialized information in meson-private to
speed up re-runs. This is not possible for version changes, where
Meson instead rebuilds the serialized information using cmd_line.txt.
In some cases cmd_line.txt can contain stale information, since it
is not rebuild except when "meson setup" is invoked. Update it in
the configure script to allow upgrading our Meson version.

c7328271cf configure: Do not use default_feature for EXESUF
Commit "c87ea11631 configure: add --without-default-features" use
default_feature to set default values for configure option. This value
is used for EXESUF too.

However, EXESUF is not option to be tested, it is just append to any
binary name so using --without-default-features set EXESUF to "n"o and
all binaries using it has form <name>no (e.g. qemu-imgno).

This is not expected behavior as disabling features should not cause
generating different binary names.

Reverting back to setting EXESUF to empty value unless needed otherwise.

44b99a6d5f exec: Build page-vary-common.c with -fno-lto
In bbc17caf81, we used an alias attribute to allow target_page
to be declared const, and yet be initialized late.

This fails when using LTO with several versions of gcc.
The compiler looks through the alias and decides that the const
variable is statically initialized to zero, then propagates that
zero to many uses of the variable.

This can be avoided by compiling one object file with -fno-lto.
In this way, any initializer cannot be seen, and the constant
propagation does not occur.

Since we are certain to have this separate compilation unit, we
can drop the alias attribute as well. We simply have differing
declarations for target_page in different compilation units.
Drop the use of init_target_page, and drop the configure detection
for CONFIG_ATTRIBUTE_ALIAS.

In order to change the compilation flags for a file with meson,
we must use a static_library. This runs into specific_ss, where
we would need to create many static_library instances.

Fix this by splitting page-vary.c: the page-vary-common.c part is
compiled once as a static_library, while the page-vary.c part is
left in specific_ss in order to handle the target-specific value
of TARGET_PAGE_BITS_MIN.

bc6a3565c8 configure: Improve OpenGL dependency detections
This has the following visible changes:

- GBM is required only for OpenGL dma-buf.
- X11 is explicitly required by gtk-egl.
- EGL is now mandatory for the OpenGL displays.

The last one needs some detailed description. Before this change,
EGL was tested only for OpenGL dma-buf with the check of
EGL_MESA_image_dma_buf_export. However, all of the OpenGL
displays depend on EGL and EGL_MESA_image_dma_buf_export is always
defined by epoxy's EGL interface.
Therefore, it makes more sense to always check the presence of EGL
and say the OpenGL displays are available along with OpenGL dma-buf
if it is present.
