66bbe3e9b4 softmmu: pass the main loop status to gdb "Wxx" packet
gdb_exit function aims to close gdb sessions and sends the exit code of
the current execution. It's being called by qemu_cleanup once the main
loop is over.
Until now, the exit code sent was always 0. Now that hardware can
shutdown this main loop with custom exit codes, these codes must be
transfered to gdb as well.

bab6a301c5 ui/cocoa: Run qemu_init in the main thread
This work is based on:
https://patchew.org/QEMU/20220317125534.38706-1-philippe.mathieu.daude@gmail.com/

Simplify the initialization dance by running qemu_init() in the main
thread before the Cocoa event loop starts. The secondary thread only
runs only qemu_main_loop() and qemu_cleanup().

This fixes a case where addRemovableDevicesMenuItems() calls
qmp_query_block() while expecting the main thread to still hold
the BQL.

Overriding the code after calling qemu_init() is done by dynamically
replacing a function pointer variable, qemu_main when initializing
ui/cocoa, which unifies the static implementation of main() for
builds with ui/cocoa and ones without ui/cocoa.

0882caf4d6 qapi: Add exit-failure PanicAction
Currently QEMU exits with code 0 on both panic an shutdown. For tests
it is useful to return 1 on panic, so that it counts as a test
failure.

Introduce a new exit-failure PanicAction that makes main() return
EXIT_FAILURE. Tests can use -action panic=exit-failure option to
activate this behavior.

9eafdeeac3 ui: Switch "-display sdl" to use the QAPI parser
The "-display sdl" option still uses a hand-crafted parser for its
parameters since we didn't want to drag an interface we considered
somewhat flawed into the QAPI schema. Since the flaws are gone now,
it's time to QAPIfy.

This introduces the new "DisplaySDL" QAPI struct that is used to hold
the parameters that are unique to the SDL display. The only specific
parameter is currently "grab-mod" that is used to specify the required
modifier keys to escape from the mouse grabbing mode.

97ec4d21e0 machine: use QAPI struct for boot configuration
As part of converting -boot to a property with a QAPI type, define
the struct and use it throughout QEMU to access boot configuration.
machine_boot_parse takes care of doing the QemuOpts->QAPI conversion by

f9bcb2d684 Warn user if the vga flag is passed but no vga device is created
A global boolean variable "vga_interface_created"(declared in softmmu/globals.c)
has been used to track the creation of vga interface. If the vga flag is passed
in the command line "default_vga"(declared in softmmu/vl.c) variable is set to 0.
To warn user, the condition checks if vga_interface_created is false
and default_vga is equal to 0. If "-vga none" is passed, this patch will not warn the
user regarding the creation of VGA device.

The warning "A -vga option was passed but this
machine type does not use that option; no VGA device has been created"
is logged if vga flag is passed but no vga device is created.

This patch has been tested for x86_64, i386, sparc, sparc64 and arm boards.

e6dba04813 qmp: generalize watchdog-set-action to -no-reboot/-no-shutdown
Add a QMP command to allow for the behaviors specified by the
-no-reboot and -no-shutdown command line option to be set at runtime.
The new command is named set-action and takes optional arguments, named
after an event, that provide a corresponding action to take.

Example:

5a1ee6077b chardev: do not use machine_init_done
machine_init_done is not the right flag to check when preconfig
is taken into account; for example "./qemu-system-x86_64 -serial
mon:stdio -preconfig" does not print the QEMU monitor header until after
exit_preconfig.  Add back a custom bool for mux character devices.  This
partially undoes commit c7278b4355 ("chardev: introduce chr_machine_done
hook", 2018-03-12), but it keeps the cleaner logic using a function
pointer in ChardevClass.

46ee119fb6 vl: remove serial_max_hds
serial_hd(i) is NULL if and only if i >= serial_max_hds().  Test
serial_hd(i) instead of bounding the loop at serial_max_hds(),
thus removing one more function that vl.c is expected to export.

a2dde2f221 monitor/hmp: rename device-hotplug.c to block/monitor/block-hmp-cmds.c
These days device-hotplug.c only contains the hmp_drive_add
In the next patch, rest of hmp_drive* functions will be moved
there.

Also add block-hmp-cmds.h to contain prototypes of these
functions

License for block-hmp-cmds.h since it contains the code
moved from sysemu.h which lacks license and thus according
to LICENSE is under GPLv2+

This series removes ad hoc RAM allocation API (memory_region_allocate_system_memory)
and consolidates it around hostmem backend. It allows to

* resolve conflicts between global -mem-prealloc and hostmem's "policy" option,
  fixing premature allocation before binding policy is applied

* simplify complicated memory allocation routines which had to deal with 2 ways
  to allocate RAM.

* reuse hostmem backends of a choice for main RAM without adding extra CLI
  options to duplicate hostmem features.  A recent case was -mem-shared, to
  enable vhost-user on targets that don't support hostmem backends [1] (ex: s390)

* move RAM allocation from individual boards into generic machine code and
  provide them with prepared MemoryRegion.

* clean up deprecated NUMA features which were tied to the old API (see patches)
  - "numa: remove deprecated -mem-path fallback to anonymous RAM"
  - (POSTPONED, waiting on libvirt side) "forbid '-numa node,mem' for 5.0 and newer machine types"
  - (POSTPONED) "numa: remove deprecated implicit RAM distribution between nodes"

Introduce a new machine.memory-backend property and wrapper code that aliases
global -mem-path and -mem-alloc into automatically created hostmem backend
properties (provided memory-backend was not set explicitly given by user).
A bulk of trivial patches then follow to incrementally convert individual
boards to using machine.memory-backend provided MemoryRegion.

Board conversion typically involves:

* providing MachineClass::default_ram_size and MachineClass::default_ram_id
  so generic code could create default backend if user didn't explicitly provide
  memory-backend or -m options

* dropping memory_region_allocate_system_memory() call

* using convenience MachineState::ram MemoryRegion, which points to MemoryRegion
   allocated by ram-memdev

On top of that for some boards:

* missing ram_size checks are added (typically it were boards with fixed ram size)

* ram_size fixups are replaced by checks and hard errors, forcing user to
  provide correct "-m" values instead of ignoring it and continuing running.

After all boards are converted, the old API is removed and memory allocation
routines are cleaned up.

7b73386222 softmmu: split off vl.c:main() into main.c
A program might rely on functions implemented in vl.c, but implement its
own main(). By placing main into a separate source file, there are no
complaints about duplicate main()s when linking against vl.o. For
example, the virtual-device fuzzer uses a main() provided by libfuzzer,
and needs to perform some initialization before running the softmmu
initialization. Now, main simply calls three vl.c functions which
handle the guest initialization, main loop and cleanup.

4ebc74dbbf hostmem: fix strict bind policy
When option -mem-prealloc is used with one or more memory-backend
objects, created backends may not obey configured bind policy or
creation may fail after kernel attempts to move pages according
to bind policy.
Reason is in file_ram_alloc(), which will pre-allocate
any descriptor based RAM if global mem_prealloc != 0 and that
happens way before bind policy is applied to memory range.

One way to fix it would be to extend memory_region_foo() API
and add more invariants that could broken later due implicit
dependencies that's hard to track.

Another approach is to drop adhoc main RAM allocation and
consolidate it around memory-backend. That allows to have
single place that allocates guest RAM (main and memdev)
in the same way and then global mem_prealloc could be
replaced by backend's property[s] that will affect created
memory-backend objects but only in correct order this time.

With main RAM now converted to hostmem backends, there is no
point in keeping global mem_prealloc around, so alias
 -mem-prealloc to "memory-backend.prealloc=on"
machine compat[*] property and make mem_prealloc a local
variable to only stir registration of compat property.

*) currently user accessible -global works only with DEVICE
   based objects and extra work is needed to make it work
   with hostmem backends. But that is convenience option
   and out of scope of this already huge refactoring.
   Hence machine compat properties were used.

8b38de9f62 make mem_path local variable
It's no longer used anywhere beside main(),
so make it local variable that is used for CLI compat
purposes to keep -mem-path option working.

Under hood QEMU will use it to create
  memory-backend-file,mem-path=...
backend and use its MemoryRegion as main RAM.

c3e9555182 monitor: Move monitor option parsing to monitor/monitor.c
Both the system emulators and tools with QMP support (specifically, the
planned storage daemon) will need to parse monitor options, so move that
code to monitor/monitor.c, which can be linked into binaries that aren't
a system emulator.

aea60a13b9 bootdevice: FW_CFG interface for LCHS values
Using fw_cfg, supply logical CHS values directly from QEMU to the BIOS.

Non-standard logical geometries break under QEMU.

A virtual disk which contains an operating system which depends on
logical geometries (consistent values being reported from BIOS INT13
AH=08) will most likely break under QEMU/SeaBIOS if it has non-standard
logical geometries - for example 56 SPT (sectors per track).
No matter what QEMU will report - SeaBIOS, for large enough disks - will
use LBA translation, which will report 63 SPT instead.

In addition we cannot force SeaBIOS to rely on physical geometries at
all. A virtio-blk-pci virtual disk with 255 phyiscal heads cannot
report more than 16 physical heads when moved to an IDE controller,
since the ATA spec allows a maximum of 16 heads - this is an artifact of
virtualization.

By supplying the logical geometries directly we are able to support such
"exotic" disks.

We serialize this information in a similar way to the "bootorder"
interface.
The new fw_cfg entry is "bios-geometry".

54d31236b9 sysemu: Split sysemu/runstate.h off sysemu/sysemu.h
sysemu/sysemu.h is a rather unfocused dumping ground for stuff related
to the system-emulator.  Evidence:

* It's included widely: in my "build everything" tree, changing
  sysemu/sysemu.h still triggers a recompile of some 1100 out of 6600
  objects (not counting tests and objects that don't depend on
  qemu/osdep.h, down from 5400 due to the previous two commits).

* It pulls in more than a dozen additional headers.

Split stuff related to run state management into its own header
sysemu/runstate.h.

Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 850 objects.  qemu/uuid.h
also drops from 1100 to 850, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 4400
to 4200.  Touching new sysemu/runstate.h recompiles some 500 objects.

Since I'm touching MAINTAINERS to add sysemu/runstate.h anyway, also
add qemu/main-loop.h.

Several headers include sysemu/sysemu.h just to get typedef
VMChangeStateEntry.  Move it from sysemu/sysemu.h to qemu/typedefs.h.
Spell its structure tag the same while there.  Drop the now
superfluous includes of sysemu/sysemu.h from headers.

Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 1100 objects.
qemu/uuid.h also drops from 1800 to 1100, and
qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from 5000 to 4400.

46517dd497 Include sysemu/sysemu.h a lot less
In my "build everything" tree, changing sysemu/sysemu.h triggers a
recompile of some 5400 out of 6600 objects (not counting tests and
objects that don't depend on qemu/osdep.h).

hw/qdev-core.h includes sysemu/sysemu.h since recent commit e965ffa70a
"qdev: add qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler()".  This is a bad idea:
hw/qdev-core.h is widely included.

Move the declaration of qdev_add_vm_change_state_handler() to
sysemu/sysemu.h, and drop the problematic include from hw/qdev-core.h.

Touching sysemu/sysemu.h now recompiles some 1800 objects.
qemu/uuid.h also drops from 5400 to 1800.  A few more headers show
smaller improvement: qemu/notify.h drops from 5600 to 5200,
qemu/timer.h from 5600 to 4500, and qapi/qapi-types-run-state.h from
5500 to 5000.

which in turn includes qemu/event_notifier.h, qemu/notify.h,

qemu/thread.h, qemu/timer.h, and a few more.

Include qemu/main-loop.h only where it's needed.  Touching it now
recompiles only some 1700 objects.  For block/aio.h and
qemu/event_notifier.h, these numbers drop from 5600 to 2800.  For the
others, they shrink only slightly.

811f865271 Revert "migration: move only_migratable to MigrationState"
This reverts commit 3df663e575.
This reverts commit b605c47b57.

Command line option --only-migratable is for disallowing any
configuration that can block migration.

Initially, --only-migratable set global variable @only_migratable.

Commit 3df663e575 "migration: move only_migratable to MigrationState"
replaced it by MigrationState member @only_migratable.  That was a
mistake.

First, it doesn't make sense on the design level.  MigrationState
captures the state of an individual migration, but --only-migratable
isn't a property of an individual migration, it's a restriction on
QEMU configuration.  With fault tolerance, we could have several
migrations at once.  --only-migratable would certainly protect all of
them.  Storing it in MigrationState feels inappropriate.

Second, it contributes to a dependency cycle that manifests itself as
a bug now.

Putting @only_migratable into MigrationState means its available only
after migration_object_init().

We can't set it before migration_object_init(), so we delay setting it
with a global property (this is fixup commit b605c47b57 "migration:
fix handling for --only-migratable").

We can't get it before migration_object_init(), so anything that uses
it can only run afterwards.

Since migrate_add_blocker() needs to obey --only-migratable, any code
adding migration blockers can run only afterwards.  This contributes
to the following dependency cycle:

* configure_blockdev() must run before machine_set_property()
  so machine properties can refer to block backends

* machine_set_property() before configure_accelerator()
  so machine properties like kvm-irqchip get applied

* configure_accelerator() before migration_object_init()
  so that Xen's accelerator compat properties get applied.

* migration_object_init() before configure_blockdev()
  so configure_blockdev() can add migration blockers

The cycle was closed when recent commit cda4aa9a5a "Create block
backends before setting machine properties" added the first
dependency, and satisfied it by violating the last one.  Broke block
backends that add migration blockers.

Moving @only_migratable into MigrationState was a mistake.  Revert it.

This doesn't quite break the "migration_object_init() before
configure_blockdev() dependency, since migrate_add_blocker() still has
another dependency on migration_object_init().  To be addressed the
next commit.

Note that the reverted commit made -only-migratable sugar for -global
migration.only-migratable=on below the hood.  Documentation has only
ever mentioned -only-migratable.  This commit removes the arcane &
undocumented alternative to -only-migratable again.  Nobody should be
using it.

96f209b946 hw/nvram/fw_cfg: Remove the unnecessary boot_splash_filedata_size
The 'boot_splash_filedata_size' was introduced as a global variable
in 3d3b8303c6. This variable is used as a 'size' argument to the
fw_cfg_add_file(). This function has an interface contract with its
'data' argument, but there is no such contract for 'size' (this is
not a referenced pointer).  We can simply remove it.

7659505c16 migration: Switch to using announce timer
Switch the announcements to using the new announce timer.
Move the code that does it to announce.c rather than savevm
because it really has nothing to do with the actual migration.

Migration starts the announce from bh's and so they're all
in the main thread/bql, and so there's never any racing with
the timers themselves.

fb06411210 qmp hmp: Make system_wakeup check wake-up support and run state
The qmp/hmp command 'system_wakeup' is simply a direct call to
'qemu_system_wakeup_request' from vl.c. This function verifies if
runstate is SUSPENDED and if the wake up reason is valid before
proceeding. However, no error or warning is thrown if any of those
pre-requirements isn't met. There is no way for the caller to
differentiate between a successful wakeup or an error state caused
when trying to wake up a guest that wasn't suspended.

This means that system_wakeup is silently failing, which can be
considered a bug. Adding error handling isn't an API break in this
case - applications that didn't check the result will remain broken,
the ones that check it will have a chance to deal with it.

Adding to that, the commit before previous created a new QMP API called
query-current-machine, with a new flag called wakeup-suspend-support,
that indicates if the guest has the capability of waking up from suspended
state. Although such guest will never reach SUSPENDED state and erroring
it out in this scenario would suffice, it is more informative for the user
to differentiate between a failure because the guest isn't suspended versus
a failure because the guest does not have support for wake up at all.

All this considered, this patch changes qmp_system_wakeup to check if
the guest is capable of waking up from suspend, and if it is suspended.
After this patch, this is the output of system_wakeup in a guest that
does not have wake-up from suspend support (ppc64):

(qemu) system_wakeup
wake-up from suspend is not supported by this guest
(qemu)

And this is the output of system_wakeup in a x86 guest that has the
support but isn't suspended:

(qemu) system_wakeup
Unable to wake up: guest is not in suspended state
(qemu)

46ea94ca9c qmp: query-current-machine with wakeup-suspend-support
When issuing the qmp/hmp 'system_wakeup' command, what happens in a
nutshell is:

- qmp_system_wakeup_request set runstate to RUNNING, sets a wakeup_reason
and notify the event
- in the main_loop, all vcpus are paused, a system reset is issued, all
subscribers of wakeup_notifiers receives a notification, vcpus are then
resumed and the wake up QAPI event is fired

Note that this procedure alone doesn't ensure that the guest will awake
from SUSPENDED state - the subscribers of the wake up event must take
action to resume the guest, otherwise the guest will simply reboot. At
this moment, only the ACPI machines via acpi_pm1_cnt_init and xen_hvm_init
have wake-up from suspend support.

However, only the presence of 'system_wakeup' is required for QGA to
support 'guest-suspend-ram' and 'guest-suspend-hybrid' at this moment.
This means that the user/management will expect to suspend the guest using
one of those suspend commands and then resume execution using system_wakeup,
regardless of the support offered in system_wakeup in the first place.

This patch creates a new API called query-current-machine [1], that holds
a new flag called 'wakeup-suspend-support' that indicates if the guest
supports wake up from suspend via system_wakeup. The machine is considered
to implement wake-up support if a call to a new 'qemu_register_wakeup_support'
is made during its init, as it is now being done inside acpi_pm1_cnt_init
and xen_hvm_init. This allows for any other machine type to declare wake-up
support regardless of ACPI state or wakeup_notifiers subscription, making easier
for newer implementations that might have their own mechanisms in the future.

This is the expected output of query-current-machine when running a x86
guest:

With this extra tool, management can avoid situations where a guest
that does not have proper suspend/wake capabilities ends up in
inconsistent state (e.g.
https://github.com/open-power-host-os/qemu/issues/31).

[1] the decision of creating the query-current-machine API is based
on discussions in the QEMU mailing list where it was decided that
query-target wasn't a proper place to store the wake-up flag, neither
was query-machines because this isn't a static property of the
machine object. This new API can then be used to store other
dynamic machine properties that are scattered around the code
