9b890bdcb6 qcow2: Store data file name in the image
Rather than requiring that the external data file node is passed
explicitly when creating the qcow2 node, store the filename in the
designated header extension during .bdrv_create and read it from there
as a default during .bdrv_open.

966b000f49 qcow2: External file I/O
This changes the qcow2 implementation to direct all guest data I/O to
s->data_file rather than bs->file, while metadata I/O still uses
bs->file. At the moment, this is still always the same, but soon we'll
add options to set s->data_file to an external data file.

77e023ff79 qcow2: Return 0/-errno in qcow2_alloc_compressed_cluster_offset()
qcow2_alloc_compressed_cluster_offset() used to return the cluster
offset for success and 0 for error. This doesn't only conflict with 0 as
a valid host offset, but also loses the error code.

Similar to the change made to qcow2_alloc_cluster_offset() for
uncompressed clusters in commit 148da7ea9d, make the function return
0/-errno and return the allocated cluster offset in a by-reference
parameter.

af39bd0d9a qcow2: Default to 4KB for the qcow2 cache entry size
QEMU 2.12 (commit 1221fe6f63) introduced
a new setting called l2-cache-entry-size that allows making entries on
the qcow2 L2 cache smaller than the cluster size.

I have been performing several tests with different cluster and entry
sizes and all of them show that reducing the entry size (aka L2 slice)
consistently improves I/O performance, notably during random I/O (all
tests done with sequential I/O show similar results). This is to be
expected because loading and evicting an L2 slice is more expensive
the larger the slice is.

Here are some numbers on fully populated 40GB qcow2 images. The
rightmost column represents the maximum L2 cache size in both cases.

   Cluster size = 64 KB
   |-------------+--------------+--------------+--------------|
   | | 1MB L2 cache | 3MB L2 cache | 5MB L2 cache |
   |-------------+--------------+--------------+--------------|
   | 4KB slices | 6545 IOPS | 12045 IOPS | 55680 IOPS |
   | 16KB slices | 5177 IOPS | 9798 IOPS | 56278 IOPS |
   | 64KB slices | 2718 IOPS | 5326 IOPS | 57355 IOPS |
   |-------------+--------------+--------------+--------------|

   Cluster size = 256 KB
   |--------------+----------------+--------------+-----------------|
   | | 512KB L2 cache | 1MB L2 cache | 1280KB L2 cache |
   |--------------+----------------+--------------+-----------------|
   | 4KB slices | 8539 IOPS | 21071 IOPS | 55417 IOPS |
   | 64KB slices | 3598 IOPS | 9772 IOPS | 57687 IOPS |
   | 256KB slices | 1415 IOPS | 4120 IOPS | 58001 IOPS |
   |--------------+----------------+--------------+-----------------|

As can be seen in the numbers, the only exception to the rule is when
the cache is large enough to hold all L2 tables. This is also to be
expected because in this case no cache entry is ever evicted so
reducing its size doesn't bring any benefit.

This patch sets the default L2 cache entry size to 4KB except when the
cache is large enough for the whole disk.

61914f8906 qcow2: include LUKS payload overhead in qemu-img measure
LUKS encryption reserves clusters for its own payload data. The size of
this area must be included in the qemu-img measure calculation so that
we arrive at the correct minimum required image size.

(Ab)use the qcrypto_block_create() API to determine the payload
overhead. We discard the payload data that qcrypto thinks will be
written to the image.

2654267cc1 block: Add strong_runtime_opts to BlockDriver
This new field can be set by block drivers to list the runtime options
they accept that may influence the contents of the respective BDS. As of
a follow-up patch, this list will be used by the common
bdrv_refresh_filename() implementation to decide which options to put
into BDS.full_open_options (and consequently whether a JSON filename has
to be created), thus freeing the drivers of having to implement that
logic themselves.

Additionally, this patch adds the field to all of the block drivers that
need it and sets it accordingly.

998c201923 block: Add BDS.auto_backing_file
If the backing file is overridden, this most probably does change the
guest-visible data of a BDS. Therefore, we will need to consider this
in bdrv_refresh_filename().

To see whether it has been overridden, we might want to compare
bs->backing_file and bs->backing->bs->filename.  However,
bs->backing_file is changed by bdrv_set_backing_hd() (which is just used
to change the backing child at runtime, without modifying the image
header), so bs->backing_file most of the time simply contains a copy of
bs->backing->bs->filename anyway, so it is useless for such a
comparison.

This patch adds an auto_backing_file BDS field which contains the
backing file path as indicated by the image header, which is not changed
by bdrv_set_backing_hd().

Because of bdrv_refresh_filename() magic, however, a BDS's filename may
differ from what has been specified during bdrv_open(). Then, the
comparison between bs->auto_backing_file and bs->backing->bs->filename
may fail even though bs->backing was opened from bs->auto_backing_file.
To mitigate this, we can copy the real BDS's filename (after the whole
bdrv_open() and bdrv_refresh_filename() process) into
bs->auto_backing_file, if we know the former has been opened based on
the latter. This is only possible if no options modifying the backing
file's behavior have been specified, though. To simplify things, this
patch only copies the filename from the backing file if no options have
been specified for it at all.

Furthermore, there are cases where an overlay is created by qemu which
already contains a BDS's filename (e.g. in blockdev-snapshot-sync). We
do not need to worry about updating the overlay's bs->auto_backing_file
there, because we actually wrote a post-bdrv_refresh_filename() filename
into the image header.

So all in all, there will be false negatives where (as of a future
patch) bdrv_refresh_filename() will assume that the backing file differs
from what was specified in the image header, even though it really does
not. However, these cases should be limited to where (1) the user
actually did override something in the backing chain (e.g. by specifying
options for the backing file), or (2) the user executed a QMP command to
change some node's backing file (e.g. change-backing-file or
block-commit with @backing-file given) where the given filename does not
happen to coincide with qemu's idea of the backing BDS's filename.

Then again, (1) really is limited to -drive. With -blockdev or
blockdev-add, you have to adhere to the schema, so a user cannot give
partial "unimportant" options (e.g. by just setting backing.node-name
and leaving the rest to the image header). Therefore, trying to fix
this would mean trying to fix something for -drive only.

To improve on (2), we would need a full infrastructure to "canonicalize"
an arbitrary filename (+ options), so it can be compared against
another. That seems a bit over the top, considering that filenames
nowadays are there mostly for the user's entertainment.

4720cbeea1 block: Fix hangs in synchronous APIs with iothreads
In the block layer, synchronous APIs are often implemented by creating a
coroutine that calls the asynchronous coroutine-based implementation and
then waiting for completion with BDRV_POLL_WHILE().

For this to work with iothreads (more specifically, when the synchronous
API is called in a thread that is not the home thread of the block
device, so that the coroutine will run in a different thread), we must
make sure to call aio_wait_kick() at the end of the operation. Many
places are missing this, so that BDRV_POLL_WHILE() keeps hanging even if
the condition has long become false.

Note that bdrv_dec_in_flight() involves an aio_wait_kick() call. This
corresponds to the BDRV_POLL_WHILE() in the drain functions, but it is
generally not enough for most other operations because they haven't set
the return value in the coroutine entry stub yet. To avoid race
conditions there, we need to kick after setting the return value.

The race window is small enough that the problem doesn't usually surface
in the common path. However, it does surface and causes easily
reproducible hangs if the operation can return early before even calling
bdrv_inc/dec_in_flight, which many of them do (trivial error or no-op
success paths).

The bug in bdrv_truncate(), bdrv_check() and bdrv_invalidate_cache() is
slightly different: These functions even neglected to schedule the
coroutine in the home thread of the node. This avoids the hang, but is
obviously wrong, too. Fix those to schedule the coroutine in the right
AioContext in addition to adding aio_wait_kick() calls.

9c98f145df dirty-bitmaps: clean-up bitmaps loading and migration logic
This patch aims to bring the following behavior:

1. We don't load bitmaps, when started in inactive mode. It's the case
of incoming migration. In this case we wait for bitmaps migration
through migration channel (if 'dirty-bitmaps' capability is enabled) or
for invalidation (to load bitmaps from the image).

2. We don't remove persistent bitmaps on inactivation. Instead, we only
remove bitmaps after storing. This is the only way to restore bitmaps,
if we decided to resume source after [failed] migration with
'dirty-bitmaps' capability enabled (which means, that bitmaps were not
stored).

3. We load bitmaps on open and any invalidation, it's ok for all cases:
  - normal open
  - migration target invalidation with dirty-bitmaps capability
(bitmaps are migrating through migration channel, the are not
stored, so they should have IN_USE flag set and will be skipped
when loading. However, it would fail if bitmaps are read-only[1])
  - migration target invalidation without dirty-bitmaps capability
(normal load of the bitmaps, if migrated with shared storage)
  - source invalidation with dirty-bitmaps capability
    (skip because IN_USE)
  - source invalidation without dirty-bitmaps capability
    (bitmaps were dropped, reload them)

[1]: to accurately handle this, migration of read-only bitmaps is
     explicitly forbidden in this patch.

New mechanism for not storing bitmaps when migrate with dirty-bitmaps
capability is introduced: migration filed in BdrvDirtyBitmap.

4b5766488f error: Fix use of error_prepend() with &error_fatal, &error_abort
From include/qapi/error.h:

  * Pass an existing error to the caller with the message modified:
  *     error_propagate(errp, err);
  *     error_prepend(errp, "Could not frobnicate '%s': ", name);

Fei Li pointed out that doing error_propagate() first doesn't work
well when @errp is &error_fatal or &error_abort: the error_prepend()
is never reached.

Since I doubt fixing the documentation will stop people from getting
it wrong, introduce error_propagate_prepend(), in the hope that it
lures people away from using its constituents in the wrong order.
Update the instructions in error.h accordingly.

Convert existing error_prepend() next to error_propagate to
error_propagate_prepend(). If any of these get reached with
&error_fatal or &error_abort, the error messages improve. I didn't
check whether that's the case anywhere.

b749562d98 qcow2: Assign the L2 cache relatively to the image size
Sufficient L2 cache can noticeably improve the performance when using
large images with frequent I/O.

Previously, unless 'cache-size' was specified and was large enough, the
L2 cache was set to a certain size without taking the virtual image size
into account.

Now, the L2 cache assignment is aware of the virtual size of the image,
and will cover the entire image, unless the cache size needed for that is
larger than a certain maximum. This maximum is set to 1 MB by default
(enough to cover an 8 GB image with the default cluster size) but can
be increased or decreased using the 'l2-cache-size' option. This option
was previously documented as the *maximum* L2 cache size, and this patch
makes it behave as such, instead of as a constant size. Also, the
existing option 'cache-size' can limit the sum of both L2 and refcount
caches, as previously.

061ca8a368 block: Convert .bdrv_truncate callback to coroutine_fn
bdrv_truncate() is an operation that can block (even for a quite long
time, depending on the PreallocMode) in I/O paths that shouldn't block.
Convert it to a coroutine_fn so that we have the infrastructure for
drivers to make their .bdrv_co_truncate implementation asynchronous.

This change could potentially introduce new race conditions because
bdrv_truncate() isn't necessarily executed atomically any more. Whether
this is a problem needs to be evaluated for each block driver that
supports truncate:

* file-posix/win32, gluster, iscsi, nfs, rbd, ssh, sheepdog: The
protocol drivers are trivially safe because they don't actually yield
yet, so there is no change in behaviour.

* copy-on-read, crypto, raw-format: Essentially just filter drivers that
pass the request to a child node, no problem.

* qcow2: The implementation modifies metadata, so it needs to hold
s->lock to be safe with concurrent I/O requests. In order to avoid
double locking, this requires pulling the locking out into
preallocate_co() and using qcow2_write_caches() instead of
  bdrv_flush().

* qed: Does a single header update, this is fine without locking.

92adf9dbcd block: Clean up a misuse of qobject_to() in .bdrv_co_create_opts()
The following pattern occurs in the .bdrv_co_create_opts() methods of

e5af0da1dc block: Fix -blockdev for certain non-string scalars
Configuration flows through the block subsystem in a rather peculiar
way. Configuration made with -drive enters it as QemuOpts.
Configuration made with -blockdev / blockdev-add enters it as QAPI
type BlockdevOptions. The block subsystem uses QDict, QemuOpts and
QAPI types internally. The precise flow is next to impossible to
explain (I tried for this commit message, but gave up after wasting
several hours). What I can explain is a flaw in the BlockDriver
interface that leads to this bug:

    $ qemu-system-x86_64 -blockdev node-name=n1,driver=nfs,server.type=inet,server.host=localhost,path=/foo/bar,user=1234
qemu-system-x86_64: -blockdev node-name=n1,driver=nfs,server.type=inet,server.host=localhost,path=/foo/bar,user=1234: Internal error: parameter user invalid

QMP blockdev-add is broken the same way.

Here's what happens. The block layer passes configuration represented
as flat QDict (with dotted keys) to BlockDriver methods
.bdrv_file_open(). The QDict's members are typed according to the
QAPI schema.

nfs_file_open() converts it to QAPI type BlockdevOptionsNfs, with
qdict_crumple() and a qobject input visitor.

This visitor comes in two flavors. The plain flavor requires scalars
to be typed according to the QAPI schema. That's the case here. The
keyval flavor requires string scalars. That's not the case here.
nfs_file_open() uses the latter, and promptly falls apart for members
@user, @group, @tcp-syn-count, @readahead-size, @page-cache-size,
@debug.

Switching to the plain flavor would fix -blockdev, but break -drive,
because there the scalars arrive in nfs_file_open() as strings.

The proper fix would be to replace the QDict by QAPI type
BlockdevOptions in the BlockDriver interface. Sadly, that's beyond my
reach right now.

Next best would be to fix the block layer to always pass correctly
typed QDicts to the BlockDriver methods. Also beyond my reach.

What I can do is throw another hack onto the pile: have
nfs_file_open() convert all members to string, so use of the keyval
flavor actually works, by replacing qdict_crumple() by new function
qdict_crumple_for_keyval_qiv().

The pattern "pass result of qdict_crumple() to
qobject_input_visitor_new_keyval()" occurs several times more:

* qemu_rbd_open()

Same issue as nfs_file_open(), but since BlockdevOptionsRbd has only

609f45ea95 block: Add block-specific QDict header
There are numerous QDict functions that have been introduced for and are
used only by the block layer. Move their declarations into an own
header file to reflect that.

While qdict_extract_subqdict() is in fact used outside of the block
layer (in util/qemu-config.c), it is still a function related very
closely to how the block layer works with nested QDicts, namely by
sometimes flattening them. Therefore, its declaration is put into this
header as well and util/qemu-config.c includes it with a comment stating
exactly which function it needs.

ddf3b47ef4 qcow2: Do not mark inactive images corrupt
When signaling a corruption on a read-only image, qcow2 already makes
fatal events non-fatal (i.e., they will not result in the image being
closed, and the image header's corrupt flag will not be set). This is
necessary because we cannot set the corrupt flag on read-only images,
and it is possible because further corruption of read-only images is
impossible.

Inactive images are effectively read-only, too, so we should do the same
for them. bdrv_is_writable() can tell us whether an image can actually
be written to, so use its result instead of !bs->read_only.

(Otherwise, the assert(!(bs->open_flags & BDRV_O_INACTIVE)) in
bdrv_co_pwritev() will fail, crashing qemu.)

7af5eea9b3 qcow2: Fix Coverity warning when calculating the refcount cache size
MIN_REFCOUNT_CACHE_SIZE is 4 and the cluster size is guaranteed to be
at most 2MB, so the minimum refcount cache size (in bytes) is always
going to fit in a 32-bit integer.

Coverity doesn't know that, and since we're storing the result in a
uint64_t (*refcount_cache_size) it thinks that we need the 64 bits and
that we probably want to do a 64-bit multiplication to prevent the
result from being truncated.

This is a false positive in this case, but it's a fair warning.
We could do a 64-bit multiplication to get rid of it, but since we
know that a 32-bit variable is enough to store this value let's simply
reuse min_refcount_cache, make it a normal int and stop doing casts.

52253998ec qcow2: Give the refcount cache the minimum possible size by default
The L2 and refcount caches have default sizes that can be overridden
using the l2-cache-size and refcount-cache-size (an additional
parameter named cache-size sets the combined size of both caches).

Unless forced by one of the aforementioned parameters, QEMU will set
the unspecified sizes so that the L2 cache is 4 times larger than the
refcount cache.

This is based on the premise that the refcount metadata needs to be
only a fourth of the L2 metadata to cover the same amount of disk
space. This is incorrect for two reasons:

 a) The amount of disk covered by an L2 table depends solely on the
cluster size, but in the case of a refcount block it depends on
the cluster size *and* the width of each refcount entry.
The 4/1 ratio is only valid with 16-bit entries (the default).

 b) When we talk about disk space and L2 tables we are talking about
guest space (L2 tables map guest clusters to host clusters),
whereas refcount blocks are used for host clusters (including
L1/L2 tables and the refcount blocks themselves). On a fully
populated (and uncompressed) qcow2 file, image size > virtual size
so there are more refcount entries than L2 entries.

Problem (a) could be fixed by adjusting the algorithm to take into
account the refcount entry width. Problem (b) could be fixed by
increasing a bit the refcount cache size to account for the clusters
used for qcow2 metadata.

However this patch takes a completely different approach and instead
of keeping a ratio between both cache sizes it assigns as much as
possible to the L2 cache and the remainder to the refcount cache.

The reason is that L2 tables are used for every single I/O request
from the guest and the effect of increasing the cache is significant
and clearly measurable. Refcount blocks are however only used for
cluster allocation and internal snapshots and in practice are accessed
sequentially in most cases, so the effect of increasing the cache is
negligible (even when doing random writes from the guest).

So, make the refcount cache as small as possible unless the user
explicitly asks for a larger one.

cbf2b7c404 qcow2: Let qcow2_create() handle protocol layer
Currently, qcow2_create() only parses the QemuOpts and then calls
qcow2_co_create() for the actual image creation, which includes both the
creation of the actual file on the file system and writing a valid empty
qcow2 image into that file.

The plan is that qcow2_co_create() becomes the function that implements
the functionality for a future 'blockdev-create' QMP command, which only
creates the qcow2 layer on an already opened file node.

This is a first step towards that goal: Let's move out anything that
deals with the protocol layer from qcow2_co_create() into
qcow2_create().  This means that qcow2_co_create() doesn't need a file
name any more.

0cf0e5980b qcow2: Generalize validate_table_offset() into qcow2_validate_table()
This function checks that the offset and size of a table are valid.

While the offset checks are fine, the size check is too generic, since
it only verifies that the total size in bytes fits in a 64-bit

limits, so the size needs to be checked again for each table using its
actual limit.

This patch generalizes this function by allowing the caller to specify
the maximum size for that table. In addition to that it allows passing
an Error variable.

9af2398977 Include less of the generated modular QAPI headers
In my "build everything" tree, a change to the types in
qapi-schema.json triggers a recompile of about 4800 out of 5100
objects.

The previous commit split up qmp-commands.h, qmp-event.h, qmp-visit.h,
qapi-types.h. Each of these headers still includes all its shards.
Reduce compile time by including just the shards we actually need.

To illustrate the benefits: adding a type to qapi/migration.json now
recompiles some 2300 instead of 4800 objects. The next commit will
improve it further.

BlockDriver->bdrv_create() has been called from coroutine context since

Make this explicit by renaming to .bdrv_co_create_opts() and add the

1221fe6f63 qcow2: Allow configuring the L2 slice size
Now that the code is ready to handle L2 slices we can finally add an
option to allow configuring their size.

An L2 slice is the portion of an L2 table that is read by the qcow2
cache. Until now the cache was always reading full L2 tables, and
since the L2 table size is equal to the cluster size this was not very
efficient with large clusters. Here's a more detailed explanation of
why it makes sense to have smaller cache entries in order to load L2
data:

   https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-block/2017-09/msg00635.html

This patch introduces a new command-line option to the qcow2 driver
named l2-cache-entry-size (cf. l2-cache-size). The cache entry size
has the same restrictions as the cluster size: it must be a power of
two and it has the same range of allowed values, with the additional
requirement that it must not be larger than the cluster size.

The L2 cache entry size (L2 slice size) remains equal to the cluster
size for now by default, so this feature must be explicitly enabled.
Although my tests show that 4KB slices consistently improve
performance and give the best results, let's wait and make more tests
with different cluster sizes before deciding on an optimal default.

Now that the cache entry size is not necessarily equal to the cluster
size we need to reflect that in the MIN_L2_CACHE_SIZE documentation.
That minimum value is a requirement of the COW algorithm: we need to
read two L2 slices (and not two L2 tables) in order to do COW, see
l2_allocate() for the actual code.

13bec229d8 qcow2: Update qcow2_truncate() to support L2 slices
The qcow2_truncate() code is mostly independent from whether
we're using L2 slices or full L2 tables, but in full and
falloc preallocation modes new L2 tables are allocated using
qcow2_alloc_cluster_link_l2(). Therefore the code needs to be
modified to ensure that all nb_clusters that are processed in each

3c2e511a24 qcow2: Add l2_slice_size field to BDRVQcow2State
The BDRVQcow2State structure contains an l2_size field, which stores
the number of 64-bit entries in an L2 table.

For efficiency reasons we want to be able to load slices instead of
full L2 tables, so we need to know how many entries an L2 slice can
hold.

An L2 slice is the portion of an L2 table that is loaded by the qcow2
cache. At the moment that cache can only load complete tables,
therefore an L2 slice has the same size as an L2 table (one cluster)
and l2_size == l2_slice_size.

Later we'll allow smaller slices, but until then we have to use this
new l2_slice_size field to make the rest of the code ready for that.

e24d813b29 block: Simplify bdrv_can_write_zeroes_with_unmap()
We don't need the can_write_zeroes_with_unmap field in
BlockDriverInfo, because it is redundant information with
supported_zero_flags & BDRV_REQ_MAY_UNMAP. Note that
BlockDriverInfo and supported_zero_flags are both per-device
settings, rather than global state about the driver as a
whole, which means one or both of these bits of information
can already be conditional. Let's audit how they were set:

crypto: always setting can_write_ to false is pointless (the
struct starts life zero-initialized), no use of supported_

nbd: just recently fixed to set can_write_ if supported_
includes MAY_UNMAP (thus this commit effectively reverts
bca80059e and solves the problem mentioned there in a more
global way)

file-posix, iscsi, qcow2: can_write_ is conditional, while
supported_ was unconditional; but passing MAY_UNMAP would
fail with ENOTSUP if the condition wasn't met

qed: can_write_ is unconditional, but pwrite_zeroes lacks
support for MAY_UNMAP and supported_ is not set. Perhaps
support can be added later (since it would be similar to
qcow2), but for now claiming false is no real loss

all other drivers: can_write_ is not set, and supported_ is
either unset or a passthrough

Simplify the code by moving the conditional into
supported_zero_flags for all drivers, then dropping the
now-unused BDI field. For callers that relied on
bdrv_can_write_zeroes_with_unmap(), we return the same
per-device settings for drivers that had conditions (no
observable change in behavior there); and can now return
true (instead of false) for drivers that support passthrough
(for example, the commit driver) which gives those drivers
the same fix as nbd just got in bca80059e. For callers that
relied on supported_zero_flags, we now have a few more places
that can avoid a wasted call to pwrite_zeroes() that will
just fail with ENOTSUP.

4096974e18 qcow2: fix image corruption on commit with persistent bitmap
If an image contains persistent bitmaps, we cannot use the
fast path of bdrv_make_empty() to clear the image during

Also leave a comment in qcow2_read_extensions to remind future
feature additions to think about fast-path removal, since we
just barely fixed the same bug for LUKS encryption.

It's a pain that qemu-img has not yet been taught to manipulate,
or even at a very minimum display, information about persistent
bitmaps; instead, we have to use QMP commands. It's also a
pain that only qeury-block and x-debug-block-dirty-bitmap-sha256

3182664220 block: Convert bdrv_get_block_status_above() to bytes
We are gradually moving away from sector-based interfaces, towards
byte-based. In the common case, allocation is unlikely to ever use
values that are not naturally sector-aligned, but it is possible
that byte-based values will let us be more precise about allocation
at the end of an unaligned file that can do byte-based access.

Changing the name of the function from bdrv_get_block_status_above()
to bdrv_block_status_above() ensures that the compiler enforces that
all callers are updated. Likewise, since it a byte interface allows
an offset mapping that might not be sector aligned, split the mapping
out of the return value and into a pass-by-reference parameter. For
now, the io.c layer still assert()s that all uses are sector-aligned,
but that can be relaxed when a later patch implements byte-based
block status in the drivers.

For the most part this patch is just the addition of scaling at the
callers followed by inverse scaling at bdrv_block_status(), plus
updates for the new split return interface. But some code,
particularly bdrv_block_status(), gets a lot simpler because it no
longer has to mess with sectors. Likewise, mirror code no longer
computes s->granularity >> BDRV_SECTOR_BITS, and can therefore drop
an assertion about alignment because the loop no longer depends on
alignment (never mind that we don't really have a driver that
reports sub-sector alignments, so it's not really possible to test
the effect of sub-sector mirroring). Fix a neighboring assertion to
use is_power_of_2 while there.

For ease of review, bdrv_get_block_status() was tackled separately.

298a1665a2 block: Allow NULL file for bdrv_get_block_status()
Not all callers care about which BDS owns the mapping for a given
range of the file. This patch merely simplifies the callers by
consolidating the logic in the common call point, while guaranteeing
a non-NULL file to all the driver callbacks, for no semantic change.
The only caller that does not care about pnum is bdrv_is_allocated,
as invoked by vvfat; we can likewise add assertions that the rest
of the stack does not have to worry about a NULL pnum.

Furthermore, this will also set the stage for a future cleanup: when
a caller does not care about which BDS owns an offset, it would be
nice to allow the driver to optimize things to not have to return
BDRV_BLOCK_OFFSET_VALID in the first place. In the case of fragmented
allocation (for example, it's fairly easy to create a qcow2 image
where consecutive guest addresses are not at consecutive host
addresses), the current contract requires bdrv_get_block_status()
to clamp *pnum to the limit where host addresses are no longer
consecutive, but allowing a NULL file means that *pnum could be
set to the full length of known-allocated data.

bdrv_get_block_status_above() clamps its *pnum answer to the BDS

any file at least 2T in size, we can very easily end up going into an
infinite loop (the maximum of 0x100000000 sectors and INT_MAX is a
64-bit quantity, which becomes 0 when assigned to int; once nb_sectors

7bc45dc172 block/qcow2: Generalize preallocate()
This patch adds two new parameters to the preallocate() function so we
will be able to use it not just for preallocating a new image but also
for preallocated image growth.

The offset parameter allows the caller to specify a virtual offset from
which to start preallocating. For newly created images this is always 0,
but for preallocating growth this will be the old image length.

The new_length parameter specifies the supposed new length of the image
(basically the "end offset" for preallocation). During image truncation,
bdrv_getlength() will return the old image length so we cannot rely on
its return value then.

c01c214b69 block: remove all encryption handling APIs
Now that all encryption keys must be provided upfront via
the QCryptoSecret API and associated block driver properties
there is no need for any explicit encryption handling APIs
in the block layer. Encryption can be handled transparently
within the block driver. We only retain an API for querying
whether an image is encrypted or not, since that is a
potentially useful piece of metadata to report to the user.

4652b8f3e1 qcow2: add support for LUKS encryption format
This adds support for using LUKS as an encryption format
with the qcow2 file, using the new encrypt.format parameter
to request "luks" format. e.g.

  # qemu-img create --object secret,data=123456,id=sec0 \
       -f qcow2 -o encrypt.format=luks,encrypt.key-secret=sec0 \
       test.qcow2 10G

The legacy "encryption=on" parameter still results in
creation of the old qcow2 AES format (and is equivalent
to the new 'encryption-format=aes'). e.g. the following are
equivalent:

  # qemu-img create --object secret,data=123456,id=sec0 \
       -f qcow2 -o encryption=on,encrypt.key-secret=sec0 \
       test.qcow2 10G

 # qemu-img create --object secret,data=123456,id=sec0 \
       -f qcow2 -o encryption-format=aes,encrypt.key-secret=sec0 \
       test.qcow2 10G

With the LUKS format it is necessary to store the LUKS
partition header and key material in the QCow2 file. This
data can be many MB in size, so cannot go into the QCow2
header region directly. Thus the spec defines a FDE
(Full Disk Encryption) header extension that specifies
the offset of a set of clusters to hold the FDE headers,
as well as the length of that region. The LUKS header is
thus stored in these extra allocated clusters before the
main image payload.

Aside from all the cryptographic differences implied by
use of the LUKS format, there is one further key difference
between the use of legacy AES and LUKS encryption in qcow2.
For LUKS, the initialiazation vectors are generated using
the host physical sector as the input, rather than the
guest virtual sector. This guarantees unique initialization
vectors for all sectors when qcow2 internal snapshots are
used, thus giving stronger protection against watermarking
attacks.

b25b387fa5 qcow2: convert QCow2 to use QCryptoBlock for encryption

0cb8d47ba9 block: deprecate "encryption=on" in favor of "encrypt.format=aes"
Historically the qcow & qcow2 image formats supported a property
"encryption=on" to enable their built-in AES encryption. We'll
soon be supporting LUKS for qcow2, so need a more general purpose
way to enable encryption, with a choice of formats.

This introduces an "encrypt.format" option, which will later be
joined by a number of other "encrypt.XXX" options. The use of
a "encrypt." prefix instead of "encrypt-" is done to facilitate
mapping to a nested QAPI schema at later date.

e.g. the preferred syntax is now

d2cb36af2b qcow2: Discard/zero clusters by byte count
Passing a byte offset, but sector count, when we ultimately
want to operate on cluster granularity, is madness. Clean up
the external interfaces to take both offset and count as bytes,
while still keeping the assertion added previously that the
caller must align the values to a cluster. Then rename things
to make sure backports don't get confused by changed units:
instead of qcow2_discard_clusters() and qcow2_zero_clusters(),
we now have qcow2_cluster_discard() and qcow2_cluster_zeroize().

The internal functions still operate on clusters at a time, and
return an int for number of cleared clusters; but on an image
with 2M clusters, a single L2 table holds 256k entries that each
represent a 2M cluster, totalling well over INT_MAX bytes if we
ever had a request for that many bytes at once. All our callers
currently limit themselves to 32-bit bytes (and therefore fewer
clusters), but by making this function 64-bit clean, we have one
less place to clean up if we later improve the block layer to
support 64-bit bytes through all operations (with the block layer
auto-fragmenting on behalf of more-limited drivers), rather than
the current state where some interfaces are artificially limited
to INT_MAX at a time.

fbaa6bb3d3 qcow2: Optimize write zero of unaligned tail cluster
We've already improved discards to operate efficiently on the tail
of an unaligned qcow2 image; it's time to make a similar improvement
to write zeroes. The special case is only valid at the tail
cluster of a file, where we must recognize that any sectors beyond
the image end would implicitly read as zero, and therefore should
not penalize our logic for widening a partial cluster into writing
the whole cluster as zero.

However, note that for now, the special case of end-of-file is only
recognized if there is no backing file, or if the backing file has
the same length; that's because when the backing file is shorter
than the active layer, we don't have code in place to recognize
that reads of a sector unallocated at the top and beyond the backing
end-of-file are implicitly zero. It's not much of a real loss,
because most people don't use images that aren't cluster-aligned,
or where the active layer is a different size than the backing
layer (especially where the difference falls within a single cluster).

Update test 154 to cover the new scenarios, using two images of
intentionally differing length.

While at it, fix the test to gracefully skip when run as
./check -qcow2 -o compat=0.10 154
since the older format lacks zero clusters already required earlier
in the test.

fdfab37dfe qcow2: Make distinction between zero cluster types obvious
Treat plain zero clusters differently from allocated ones, so that
we can simplify the logic of checking whether an offset is present.
Do this by splitting QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO into two new enums,
QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN and QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOC.

I tried to arrange the enum so that we could use
'ret <= QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_PLAIN' for all unallocated types, and
'ret >= QCOW2_CLUSTER_ZERO_ALLOC' for allocated types, although
I didn't actually end up taking advantage of the layout.

In many cases, this leads to simpler code, by properly combining
cases (sometimes, both zero types pair together, other times,
plain zero is more like unallocated while allocated zero is more
like normal).

048c5fd1bf qcow2: Allow discard of final unaligned cluster
As mentioned in commit 0c1bd46, we ignored requests to
discard the trailing cluster of an unaligned image. While
discard is an advisory operation from the guest standpoint,
(and we are therefore free to ignore any request), our
qcow2 implementation exploits the fact that a discarded
cluster reads back as 0. As long as we discard on cluster
boundaries, we are fine; but that means we could observe
non-zero data leaked at the tail of an unaligned image.

Enhance iotest 66 to cover this case, and fix the implementation
to honor a discard request on the final partial cluster.

55880601d8 block: Add BDRV_O_RESIZE for blk_new_open()
blk_new_open() is a convenience function that processes flags rather
than QDict options as a simple way to just open an image file.

In order to keep it convenient in the future, it must automatically
request the necessary permissions. This can easily be inferred from the
flags for read and write, but we need another flag that tells us whether
to get the resize permission.

We can't just always request it because that means that no block jobs
can run on the resulting BlockBackend (which is something that e.g.
qemu-img commit wants to do), but we also can't request it never because
most of the .bdrv_create() implementations call blk_truncate().

The solution is to introduce another flag that is passed by all users
that want to resize the image.

4e4bf5c42c block: Attach bs->file only during .bdrv_open()
The way that attaching bs->file worked was a bit unusual in that it was
the only child that would be attached to a node which is not opened yet.
Because of this, the block layer couldn't know yet which permissions the
driver would eventually need.

This patch moves the point where bs->file is attached to the beginning
of the individual .bdrv_open() implementations, so drivers already know
what they are going to do with the child. This is also more consistent
with how driver-specific children work.

For a moment, bdrv_open() gets its own BdrvChild to perform image
probing, but instead of directly assigning this BdrvChild to the BDS, it
becomes a temporary one and the node name is passed as an option to the
drivers, so that they can simply use bdrv_open_child() to create another
reference for their own use.

This duplicated child for (the not opened yet) bs is not the final
state, a follow-up patch will change the image probing code to use a
BlockBackend, which is completely independent of bs.

7061a07898 qcow2: Optimize the refcount-block overlap check
The metadata overlap checks introduced in a40f1c2add help detect
corruption in the qcow2 image by verifying that data writes don't
overlap with existing metadata sections.

The 'refcount-block' check in particular iterates over the refcount
table in order to get the addresses of all refcount blocks and check
that none of them overlap with the region where we want to write.

The problem with the refcount table is that since it always occupies
complete clusters its size is usually very big. With the default
values of cluster_size=64KB and refcount_bits=16 this table holds 8192
entries, each one of them enough to map 2GB worth of host clusters.

So unless we're using images with several TB of allocated data this
table is going to be mostly empty, and iterating over it is a waste of
CPU. If the storage backend is fast enough this can have an effect on
I/O performance.

This patch keeps the index of the last used (i.e. non-zero) entry in
the refcount table and updates it every time the table changes. The
refcount-block overlap check then uses that index instead of reading
the whole table.

In my tests with a 4GB qcow2 file stored in RAM this doubles the
amount of write IOPS.

49228d1e95 block: Return -ENOTSUP rather than assert on unaligned discards
Right now, the block layer rounds discard requests, so that
individual drivers are able to assert that discard requests
will never be unaligned. But there are some ISCSI devices
that track and coalesce multiple unaligned requests, turning it
into an actual discard if the requests eventually cover an
entire page, which implies that it is better to always pass
discard requests as low down the stack as possible.

In isolation, this patch has no semantic effect, since the
block layer currently never passes an unaligned request through.
But the block layer already has code that silently ignores
drivers that return -ENOTSUP for a discard request that cannot
be honored (as well as drivers that return 0 even when nothing
was done). But the next patch will update the block layer to
fragment discard requests, so that clients are guaranteed that
they are either dealing with an unaligned head or tail, or an
aligned core, making it similar to the block layer semantics of
write zero fragmentation.

fix a regression in the block layer ignoring too much of an

to work, the block layer must know about our limits.

However, we can't go one step further by changing
qcow2_discard_clusters() to assert that requests are always
aligned, since that helper function is reached on paths
