The up-coming upgrade to Fedora 37 will bring in libtcmalloc as a

disable the build lets use LSAN's suppression mechanism to prevent the

We were using quite and old runner on our machines and running into
issues with stalling jobs. Gitlab in the meantime now reliably provide
the latest packaged versions of the runner under a stable URL. This
update:
- creates a per-arch subdir for builds
- switches from binary tarballs to deb packages
- re-uses the same binary for the secondary runner
- updates distro check for second to 22.04
Note this script isn't fully idempotent as we end up accumulating
runners especially during testing. However we also want to be able to
run twice with different GitLab keys (e.g. project and personal) so I
think we just have to be mindful of that during testing.

Add co_wrapper_bdrv_rdlock and co_wrapper_mixed_bdrv_rdlock option to
the block-coroutine-wrapper.py script.
This "_bdrv_rdlock" option takes and releases the graph rdlock when a
coroutine function is created.
This means that when used together with "_mixed", the function marked
with co_wrapper_mixed_bdrv_rdlock will support both coroutine and
non-coroutine case, and in the latter case it will create a coroutine
that takes and releases the rdlock. When called from a coroutine, the
caller must already hold the graph lock.
Example:
void co_wrapper_mixed_bdrv_rdlock bdrv_f1();
Becomes
static void bdrv_co_enter_f1()
{
bdrv_graph_co_rdlock();
bdrv_co_function();
bdrv_graph_co_rdunlock();
}
void bdrv_f1()
{
if (qemu_in_coroutine) {
assume_graph_lock();
bdrv_co_function();
} else {
qemu_co_enter(bdrv_co_enter_f1);
...
}
}
When used alone, the function will not work in coroutine context, and
when called in non-coroutine context it will create a new coroutine that
takes care of taking and releasing the rdlock automatically.
Example:
void co_wrapper_bdrv_rdlock bdrv_f1();
Becomes
static void bdrv_co_enter_f1()
{
bdrv_graph_co_rdlock();
bdrv_co_function();
bdrv_graph_co_rdunlock();
}
void bdrv_f1()
{
assert(!qemu_in_coroutine());
qemu_co_enter(bdrv_co_enter_f1);
...
}
About their usage:
- co_wrapper does not take the rdlock, so it can be used also outside
the block layer.
- co_wrapper_mixed will be used by many blk_* functions, since the
coroutine function needs to call blk_wait_while_drained() and
the rdlock *must* be taken afterwards, otherwise it's a deadlock.
In the future this annotation will go away, and blk_* will use
co_wrapper directly.
- co_wrapper_bdrv_rdlock will be used by BlockDriver callbacks, ideally
by all of them in the future.
- co_wrapper_mixed_bdrv_rdlock will be used by the remaining functions
that are still called by coroutine and non-coroutine context. In the
future this annotation will go away, as we will split such mixed
functions.

Right now, we take the first parameter of the function to get the
BlockDriverState to pass to bdrv_poll_co(), that internally calls
functions that figure in which aiocontext the coroutine should run.
However, it is useless to pass a bs just to get its own AioContext,
so instead pass it directly, and default to the main loop if no
BlockDriverState is passed as parameter.

This new annotation starts just a function wrapper that creates
a new coroutine. It assumes the caller is not a coroutine.
It will be the default annotation to be used in the future.
This is much better as c_w_mixed, because it is clear if the caller
is a coroutine or not, and provides the advantage of automating
the code creation. In the future all c_w_mixed functions will be
substituted by co_wrapper.

In QAPI, absent optional members are distinct from any present value.
We thus represent an optional schema member FOO as two C members: a
FOO with the member's type, and a bool has_FOO. Likewise for function
arguments.
However, has_FOO is actually redundant for a pointer-valued FOO, which
can be null only when has_FOO is false, i.e. has_FOO == !!FOO. Except
for arrays, where we a null FOO can also be a present empty array.
The redundant has_FOO are a nuisance to work with. Improve the
generator to elide them. Uses of has_FOO need to be replaced as
follows.
Tests of has_FOO become the equivalent comparison of FOO with null.
For brevity, this is commonly done by implicit conversion to bool.
Assignments to has_FOO get dropped.
Likewise for arguments to has_FOO parameters.
Beware: code may violate the invariant has_FOO == !!FOO before the
transformation, and get away with it. The above transformation can
then break things. Two cases:
* Absent: if code ignores FOO entirely when !has_FOO (except for
freeing it if necessary), even non-null / uninitialized FOO works.
Such code is known to exist.
* Present: if code ignores FOO entirely when has_FOO, even null FOO
works. Such code should not exist.
In both cases, replacing tests of has_FOO by FOO reverts their sense.
We have to fix the value of FOO then.
To facilitate review of the necessary updates to handwritten code, add
means to opt out of this change, and opt out for all QAPI schema
modules where the change requires updates to handwritten code. The
next few commits will remove these opt-outs in reviewable chunks, then
drop the means to opt out.

The GTK Clipboard implementation may cause guest hangs.
Therefore implement new configure switch: --enable-gtk-clipboard,
as a meson option disabled by default, which warns in the help
text about the experimental nature of the feature.
Regenerate the meson build options to include it.
The initialization of the clipboard is gtk.c, as well as the
compilation of gtk-clipboard.c are now conditional on this new
option to be set.

manual process, and error prone.
Actually build/config-host.mak contains a GLIB_BINDIR variable
which is the directory where glib and other DLLs reside. This
works for both Windows native build and cross-build on Linux.

libblkio (https://gitlab.com/libblkio/libblkio/) is a library for
high-performance disk I/O. It currently supports io_uring,
virtio-blk-vhost-user, and virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa with additional drivers
under development.
One of the reasons for developing libblkio is that other applications
besides QEMU can use it. This will be particularly useful for
virtio-blk-vhost-user which applications may wish to use for connecting
to qemu-storage-daemon.
libblkio also gives us an opportunity to develop in Rust behind a C API
that is easy to consume from QEMU.
This commit adds io_uring, nvme-io_uring, virtio-blk-vhost-user, and
virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa BlockDrivers to QEMU using libblkio. It will be
easy to add other libblkio drivers since they will share the majority of
code.
For now I/O buffers are copied through bounce buffers if the libblkio
driver requires it. Later commits add an optimization for
pre-registering guest RAM to avoid bounce buffers.
The syntax is:
--blockdev io_uring,node-name=drive0,filename=test.img,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on|off
--blockdev nvme-io_uring,node-name=drive0,filename=/dev/ng0n1,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on
--blockdev virtio-blk-vhost-vdpa,node-name=drive0,path=/dev/vdpa...,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on
--blockdev virtio-blk-vhost-user,node-name=drive0,path=vhost-user-blk.sock,readonly=on|off,cache.direct=on

Since QEMU 7.1 we don't support Ubuntu 18.04 anymore, so the last big
important Linux distro that did not have a pre-packaged libslirp has
been dismissed. All other major distros seem to have a libslirp package
in their distribution already - according to repology.org:
Fedora 35: 4.6.1
CentOS 8 (RHEL-8): 4.4.0
Debian 11: 4.4.0
OpenSUSE Leap 15.3: 4.3.1
Ubuntu LTS 20.04: 4.1.0
FreeBSD Ports: 4.7.0
NetBSD pkgsrc: 4.7.0
Homebrew: 4.7.0
MSYS2 mingw: 4.7.0
The only one that was still missing a libslirp package is OpenBSD - but
the next version (OpenBSD 7.2 which will be shipped in October) is going
to include a libslirp package. Since QEMU 7.2 will be published after
OpenBSD 7.2, we should be fine there, too.
So there is no real urgent need for keeping the slirp submodule in
the QEMU tree anymore. Thus let's drop the slirp submodule now and
rely on the libslirp packages from the distributions instead.

(used as the base copy of the fuzzer, to which all others are linked)

Developers often run QEMU without installing. The bundle mechanism
allows to look up files which should be present in installation even in
such a situation.
It is a general mechanism and can find any files in the installation
tree. The build tree will have a new directory, qemu-bundle, to
represent what files the installation tree would have for reference by
the executables.
Note that it abandons compatibility with Windows older than 8. The
extended support for the prior version, 7 ended more than 2 years ago,
and it is unlikely that someone would like to run the latest QEMU on
such an old system.

This implements a VDUSE block backends based on
the libvduse library. We can use it to export the BDSs
for both VM and container (host) usage.
The new command-line syntax is:
$ qemu-storage-daemon \
--blockdev file,node-name=drive0,filename=test.img \
--export vduse-blk,node-name=drive0,id=vduse-export0,writable=on
After the qemu-storage-daemon started, we need to use
the "vdpa" command to attach the device to vDPA bus:
$ vdpa dev add name vduse-export0 mgmtdev vduse
Also the device must be removed via the "vdpa" command
before we stop the qemu-storage-daemon.

module_kconfig is a new directive that should be used with module_obj
whenever that module depends on the Kconfig to be enabled.
When the module is enabled in Kconfig we are sure that its dependencies
will be enabled as well, thus the module will be loaded without any
problem.
The correct way to use module_kconfig is by passing the Kconfig option
to module_kconfig (or the *config-devices.mak without CONFIG_).

This works like adding a typical pxb device, except the name is
'pxb-cxl' instead of 'pxb-pcie'. An example command line would be as
follows:
-device pxb-cxl,id=cxl.0,bus="pcie.0",bus_nr=1
A CXL PXB is backward compatible with PCIe. What this means in practice
is that an operating system that is unaware of CXL should still be able
to enumerate this topology as if it were PCIe.
One can create multiple CXL PXB host bridges, but a host bridge can only
be connected to the main root bus. Host bridges cannot appear elsewhere
in the topology.
Note that as of this patch, the ACPI tables needed for the host bridge
(specifically, an ACPI object in _SB named ACPI0016 and the CEDT) aren't
created. So while this patch internally creates it, it cannot be
properly used by an operating system or other system software.
Also necessary is to add an exception to scripts/device-crash-test
similar to that for exiting pxb as both must created on a PCIexpress
host bus.

Allow using the buildoptions.json file for more options, namely anything
that is not a boolean or multiple-choice.
The mapping between configure and meson is messy for string options,
so allow configure to use to something other than the name in
meson_options.txt. This will come in handy anyway for builtin

Now that we are fully switched over to the new QMP library, move it back
over the old namespace. This is being done primarily so that we may
upload this package simply as "qemu.qmp" without introducing confusion
over whether or not "aqmp" is a new protocol or not.
The trade-off is increased confusion inside the QEMU developer
tree. Sorry!
Note: the 'private' member "_aqmp" in legacy.py also changes to "_qmp";
not out of necessity, but just to remove any traces of the "aqmp"

With the command line flag -mplt and a recent toolchain, ELF binaries
generated by gcc can obtain EI_ABIVERSION=1, which makes, e.g., gcc
three-stage bootstrap in a mips-unknown-linux-gnu qemu-user chroot
fail since the binfmt-misc magic does not match anymore. Also other
values are technically possible. qemu executes these binaries just
fine, so relax the mask for the EI_ABIVERSION byte at offset 0x08.
In addition, extend magic string to distinguish mips o32 and n32 ABI.
This information is given by the EF_MIPS_ABI2 (0x20) bit in the
e_flags field of the ELF header (a 4-byte value at offset 0x24 for
the here applicable ELFCLASS32).

If there is a failing iotest, the output is currently not logged to
the console anymore. To get this working again, we need to run the
meson test runner with "--print-errorlogs" (and without "--verbose"
due to a current meson bug that will be fixed here:
https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/commit/c3f145ca2b9f5.patch ).
We could update the "meson test" call in tests/Makefile.include,
but actually it's nicer and easier if we simply do not treat the
iotests as separate test target anymore and integrate them along
with the other test suites. This has the disadvantage of not getting
the detailed progress indication there anymore, but since that was
only working right in single-threaded "make -j1" mode anyway, it's
not a huge loss right now.

We use the nsis.py script to write out an installer script Section
for each emulator executable, so the exact set of Sections depends on
which executables were built. However the part of qemu.nsi which
specifies mouse-over descriptions for each Section still has a
hard-coded and very outdated list (with just i386 and alpha). This
causes two problems. Firstly, if you build the installer for a
configuration where you didn't build the i386 binaries you get
warnings like this:
warning 6000: unknown variable/constant "{Section_i386}" detected, ignoring (macro:_==:1)
warning 6000: unknown variable/constant "{Section_i386w}" detected, ignoring (macro:_==:1)
(this happens in our gitlab CI jobs, for instance).
Secondly, most of the emulators in the generated installer don't have
any mouseover text.
Make nsis.py generate a second output file which has the necessary
MUI_DESCRIPTION_TEXT lines for each Section it creates, so we can
include that at the right point in qemu.nsi to set the mouse-over
text.

pointing to the right socket.
With 'qmp-shell-wrap' developers can ignore QMP sockets entirely and
just pass the QEMU command and arguments they want. The program will
listen on a UNIX socket and tell QEMU to connect QMP to that.
For example, this:
# qmp-shell-wrap -- qemu-system-x86_64 -display none
Is roughly equivalent of running:
# qemu-system-x86_64 -display none -qmp qmp-shell-1234 &
# qmp-shell qmp-shell-1234
Except that 'qmp-shell-wrap' switches the socket peers around so that
it is the UNIX socket server and QEMU is the socket client. This makes
QEMU reliably go away when qmp-shell-wrap exits, closing the server
socket.

The VSS headers are part of standard MS VS SDK, at least since version
15, and probably before that.
They are also included with MinGW, although currently broken.
Let's streamline a bit the options, by not making it so special, and
instead rely on proper system headers configuration or user
--extra-cxxflags. This still requires some extra step to cross-build
with MinGW as described in the meson.build file now.

For a long time, we assumed that libxml2 is necessary for parallels
block format support (block/parallels*). However, this format actually
does not use libxml [*]. Since this is the only user of libxml2 in
whole QEMU tree, we can drop all libxml2 checks and dependencies too.
It is even more: --enable-parallels configure option was the only
option which was silently ignored when it's (fake) dependency
(libxml2) isn't installed.
Drop all mentions of libxml2.
[*] Actually the basis for libxml use were introduced in commit
ed279a06c5 ("configure: add dependency") but the implementation
was never merged:

"meson test" can be asked to run tests verbosely; this makes it usable
also for qemu-iotests's own harness, and it lets "make check-block"
reuse mtest2make.py's infrastructure to find and build test dependencies.
Adjust check-block.sh to use the standard exit code that reports a test
as skipped. Alternatively, in the future we could make it produce TAP
output, which is consistent with all other "make check" tests.

We don't generate trace events for tests/ and qga/ because that it is
not simple and not necessary. We have corresponding comments in both
tests/meson.build and qga/meson.build.
Still to not miss possible future qapi code generation call, and not to
forget to enable trace events generation, let's enable it by default.
So, turn option --gen-trace into opposite --no-trace-events and use new
option only in tests/ and qga/ where we already have good comments why
we don't generate trace events code.
Note that this commit enables trace-events generation for qapi-gen.py
call from tests/qapi-schema/meson.build and storage-daemon/meson.build.
Still, both are kind of noop: tests/qapi-schema/ doesn't seem to
generate any QMP command code and no .trace-events files anyway,
storage-daemon/ uses common QMP command implementations and just
generate empty .trace-events

So, add an output module FOO.trace-events for each FOO schema module.

First, this permission never protected a node from being changed, as
generic child-replacing functions don't check it.
Second, it's a strange thing: it presents a permission of parent node
to change its child. But generally, children are replaced by different
mechanisms, like jobs or qmp commands, not by nodes.
Graph-mod permission is hard to understand. All other permissions
describe operations which done by parent node on its child: read,
write, resize. Graph modification operations are something completely
different.
The only place where BLK_PERM_GRAPH_MOD is used as "perm" (not shared
perm) is mirror_start_job, for s->target. Still modern code should use
bdrv_freeze_backing_chain() to protect from graph modification, if we
don't do it somewhere it may be considered as a bug. So, it's a bit
risky to drop GRAPH_MOD, and analyzing of possible loss of protection
is hard. But one day we should do it, let's do it now.
One more bit of information is that locking the corresponding byte in
file-posix doesn't make sense at all.

The handling for the XFS_IOC_DIOINFO ioctl is currently quite excessive:
This is not a "real" feature like the other features that we provide with
the "--enable-xxx" and "--disable-xxx" switches for the configure script,
since this does not influence lots of code (it's only about one call to
xfsctl() in file-posix.c), so people don't gain much with the ability to
disable this with "--disable-xfsctl".
It's also unfortunate that the ioctl will be disabled on Linux in case
the user did not install the right xfsprogs-devel package before running
configure. Thus let's simplify this by providing the ioctl definition
on our own, so we can completely get rid of the header dependency and
thus the related code in the configure script.

"meson test" starting with version 0.57 is just as capable and easy to
use as QEMU's own TAP driver. All existing options for "make check"
work. The only required code change involves how to mark "slow" tests;
they need to belong to an additional "slow" suite.
The rules for .tap output are replaced by JUnit XML; GitLab is able

The "dbus" display backend exports the QEMU consoles and other
UI-related interfaces over D-Bus.
By default, the connection is established on the session bus, but you
can specify a different bus with the "addr" option.
The backend takes the "org.qemu" service name, while still allowing
further instances to queue on the same name (so you can lookup all the
available instances too). It accepts any number of clients at this
point, although this is expected to evolve with options to restrict
clients, or only accept p2p via fd passing.
The interface is intentionally very close to the internal QEMU API,

device-crash-test to wedge itself in the case that QEMU terminates *so
quickly* that it doesn't even begin a connection attempt to our QMP
client. Python will just joyfully wait ad infinitum for a connection
that will now never arrive.
The real fix is to use asyncio to simultaneously poll both the health of
the launched process AND the connection attempt. That's quite a bit more
invasive than just setting a connection timeout, though.

This introduces three different parts of a job designed to run
on a custom runner managed by Red Hat. The goals include:
a) propose a model for other organizations that want to onboard
their own runners, with their specific platforms, build
configuration and tests.
b) bring awareness to the differences between upstream QEMU and the
version available under CentOS Stream, which is "A preview of
upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux minor and major releases".
c) because of b), it should be easier to identify and reduce the gap
between Red Hat's downstream and upstream QEMU.
The components of this custom job are:
I) OS build environment setup code:
- additions to the existing "build-environment.yml" playbook
that can be used to set up CentOS/EL 8 systems.
- a CentOS Stream 8 specific "build-environment.yml" playbook
that adds to the generic one.
II) QEMU build configuration: a script that will produce binaries with
features as similar as possible to the ones built and packaged on
CentOS stream 8.
III) Scripts that define the minimum amount of testing that the
binaries built with the given configuration (point II) under the
given OS build environment (point I) should be subjected to.
IV) Job definition: GitLab CI jobs that will dispatch the build/test
jobs (see points #II and #III) to the machine specifically
configured according to #I.

Under SELinux, Unix domain sockets have two labels. One is on the
disk and can be set with commands such as chcon(1). There is a
different label stored in memory (called the process label). This can
only be set by the process creating the socket. When using SELinux +
SVirt and wanting qemu to be able to connect to a qemu-nbd instance,
you must set both labels correctly first.
For qemu-nbd the options to set the second label are awkward. You can
create the socket in a wrapper program and then exec into qemu-nbd.
Or you could try something with LD_PRELOAD.
This commit adds the ability to set the label straightforwardly on the
command line, via the new --selinux-label flag. (The name of the flag
is the same as the equivalent nbdkit option.)
A worked example showing how to use the new option can be found in

This gains some bugfixes, especially:
- it fixes the introspection of array options. While technically we
still support Meson 0.58.2, this issue only appears when adding a new
option and not if the user is just building QEMU. In the relatively
rare case of a contributor using --meson to point to a 0.58 version,
review can catch spurious changes to scripts/meson-buildoptions.sh
easily.
- it fixes "meson test" when it is not the process group leader. Make is
the process group leader when "make check" invokes "meson test", so this
is a requirement for using it as a test harness.

deprecated-output set policy for deprecated interfaces (see commit

interfaces. It is experimental.
For now, this covers only syntactic aspects of QMP, i.e. stuff tagged
with feature 'unstable'. We may want to extend it to cover semantic
aspects, or the command line.
Note that there is no good way for management application to detect
presence of these new option parameters: they are not visible output
of query-qmp-schema or query-command-line-options. Tolerable, because
it's meant for testing. If running with -compat fails, skip the test.

The next commit will add feature flags to enum members. There's a
problem, though: query-qmp-schema shows an enum type's members as an
array of member names (SchemaInfoEnum member @values). If it showed
an array of objects with a name member, we could simply add more
members to these objects. Since it's just strings, we can't.
I can see three ways to correct this design mistake:
1. Do it the way we should have done it, plus compatibility goo.
We want a ['SchemaInfoEnumMember'] member in SchemaInfoEnum. Since
changing @values would be a compatibility break, add a new member
@members instead.
@values is now redundant. In my testing, output of
qemu-system-x86_64's query-qmp-schema grows by 11% (18.5KiB).
We can deprecate @values now and drop it later. This will break
outmoded clients. Well-behaved clients such as libvirt are
expected to break cleanly.
2. Like 1, but omit "boring" elements of @member, and empty @member.
@values does not become redundant. @members augments it. Somewhat
cumbersome, but output of query-qmp-schema grows only as we make
enum members non-boring.
There is nothing to deprecate here.
3. Versioned query-qmp-schema.
query-qmp-schema provides either @values or @members. The QMP
client can select which version it wants. There is no redundant
output.
We can deprecate old versions and eventually drop them. This will
break outmoded clients. Breaking cleanly is easier than for 1.
While 1 and 2 operate within the common rules for compatible
evolution apply (section "Compatibility considerations" in
docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst), 3 bypasses them. Attractive when
operating within the rules is just too awkward. Not the case here.
This commit implements 1. Libvirt developers prefer it.
Deprecate @values in favour of @members. Since query-qmp-schema
compatibility is pretty fundamental for management applications, an
extended grace period is advised.

Right now meson_options.txt lists about 90 options. Each option
needs code in configure to parse it and pass the option down to Meson as
a -D command-line argument; in addition the default must be duplicated
between configure and meson_options.txt. This series tries to remove
the code duplication by generating the case statement for those --enable
and --disable options, as well as the corresponding help text.
About 80% of the options can be handled completely by the new mechanism.
Eight meson options are not of the --enable/--disable kind. Six more need
to be parsed in configure for various reasons documented in the patch,
but they still have their help automatically generated.
The advantages are:
- less code in configure
- parsing and help is more consistent (for example --enable-blobs was
not supported)
- options are described entirely in one place, meson_options.txt.
This make it more attractive to use Meson options instead of
hand-crafted configure options and config-host.mak
A few options change name: --enable-tcmalloc and --enable-jemalloc
become --enable-malloc={tcmalloc,jemalloc}; --disable-blobs becomes
--disable-install-blobs; --enable-trace-backend becomes
--enable-trace-backends. However, the old names are allowed
for backwards compatibility.

Adding static types causes a cycle in the QAPI generator:
[schema -> expr -> parser -> schema]. It exists because the QAPIDoc
class needs the names of types defined by the schema module, but the
schema module needs to import both expr.py/parser.py to do its actual
parsing.
Ultimately, the layering violation is that parser.py should not have any
knowledge of specifics of the Schema. QAPIDoc performs double-duty here
both as a parser *and* as a finalized object that is part of the schema.
In this patch, add the offending type hints alongside the workaround to
avoid the cycle becoming a problem at runtime. See
https://mypy.readthedocs.io/en/latest/runtime_troubles.html#import-cycles
for more information on this workaround technique.
I see three ultimate resolutions here:
(1) Just keep this patch and use the TYPE_CHECKING trick to eliminate
the cycle which is only present during static analysis.
(2) Don't bother to annotate connect_member() et al, give them 'object'
or 'Any'. I don't particularly like this, because it diminishes the
usefulness of type hints for documentation purposes. Still, it's an
extremely quick fix.
(3) Reimplement doc <--> definition correlation directly in schema.py,
integrating doc fields directly into QAPISchemaMember and relieving
the QAPIDoc class of the responsibility. Users of the information
would instead visit the members first and retrieve their
documentation instead of the inverse operation -- visiting the
documentation and retrieving their members.
My preference is (3), but in the short-term (1) is the easiest way to
have my cake (strong type hints) and eat it too (Not have import
cycles). Do (1) for now, but plan for (3).

Here's the weird bit. QAPIDoc generally expects -- virtually everywhere
-- that it will always have a current section. The sole exception to
this is in the case that end_comment() is called, which leaves us with
*no* section. However, in this case, we also don't expect to actually
ever mutate the comment contents ever again.
NullSection is just a Null-object that allows us to maintain the
invariant that we *always* have a current section, enforced by static
typing -- allowing us to type that field as QAPIDoc.Section instead of
the more ambiguous Optional[QAPIDoc.Section].
end_section is renamed to switch_section and now accepts as an argument
the new section to activate, clarifying that no callers ever just
unilaterally end a section; they only do so when starting a new section.

The "if self._section" clause in end_section is mysterious: In which

QAPIDoc always expects there to be a "current section", only except
after a call to end_comment(). This actually *shouldn't* ever be 'None',
so let's remove that logic so I don't wonder why it's like this again in

True, we do not check the validity of this symbol -- but we don't check
the validity of definition names during parse, either -- that happens
later, during the expr check. I don't want to introduce a dependency on
expr.py:check_name_str here and introduce a cycle.
Instead, rest assured that a documentation block is required for each
definition. This requirement uses the names of each section to ensure
that we fulfilled this requirement.
e.g., let's say that block-core.json has a comment block for
"Snapshot!Info" by accident. We'll see this error message:
In file included from ../../qapi/block.json:8:
../../qapi/block-core.json: In struct 'SnapshotInfo':
../../qapi/block-core.json:38: documentation comment is for 'Snapshot!Info'
That's a pretty decent error message.
Now, let's say that we actually mangle it twice, identically:
../../qapi/block-core.json: In struct 'Snapshot!Info':
../../qapi/block-core.json:38: struct has an invalid name
That's also pretty decent. If we forget to fix it in both places, we'll
just be back to the first error.
Therefore, let's just drop this FIXME and adjust the error message to
not imply a more thorough check than is actually performed.

information. However, this means that libfuzzer will track coverage over
hundreds of source files that are unrelated to virtual-devices. This
means that libfuzzer will optimize inputs for coverage observed in timer
code, memory APIs etc. This slows down the fuzzer and stores many inputs
that are not relevant to the actual virtual-devices.
With this change, clang versions that support the
"-fsanitize-coverage-allowlist" will only instrument a subset of the

memory areas allocated by GLib functions not included in model.c,

documentation, which suggests that g_malloc() should be matched
with g_free() and plain malloc() with free(); since GLib 2.46 however
g_malloc() is hardcoded to always use the system malloc implementation,
and g_free is just "free" plus a tracepoint. Therefore, this

To have the jobs dispatched to custom runners, gitlab-runner must
be installed, active as a service and properly configured. The
variables file and playbook introduced here should help with those
steps.
The playbook introduced here covers the Linux distributions and
has been primarily tested on OS/machines that the QEMU project
has available to act as runners, namely:
* Ubuntu 20.04 on aarch64
* Ubuntu 18.04 on s390x
But, it should work on all other Linux distributions. Earlier
versions were tested on FreeBSD too, so chances of success are
high.

To run basic jobs on custom runners, the environment needs to be
properly set up. The most common requirement is having the right
packages installed.
The playbook introduced here covers the QEMU's project s390x and
aarch64 machines. At the time this is being proposed, those machines
have already had this playbook applied to them.

Setting SYSTEMTAP_TAPSET to some value other than
/usr/share/systemtap/tapsets results in systemtap not finding the
standard tapset library any more, which in turn breaks tracing because
pid() and other standard systemtap functions are not available any more.
So using SYSTEMTAP_TAPSET to point systemtap to the qemu probes will
only work for the prefix=/usr installs because both qemu and system
tapsets in the same directory then. All other prefixes are broken.
Fix that by using the "-I $tapsetdir" command line switch instead.

preserve development history attached to the new file. A forwarder will

With qmp_shell in the python qemu.qmp package, now it is fully type
checked, linted, etc. via the Python CI. It will be quite a bit harder
to accidentally break it again in the future.

We can invoke the shell history writing when we leave the QMPShell scope
instead of relying on atexit. Doing so may be preferable to avoid global
state being registered from within a class instead of from the
application logic directly.
Use QMP's context manager to hook this history saving at close time,
which gets invoked when we leave the context block.

Add a little forwarder shim until we are sure that everyone is
comfortable with how to use the tools in their new packaged location.

The script itself will be unavailable for a few commits before being
restored, with no way to run it right after this commit. This helps move
git history into the new file. To prevent linter regressions, though, we
do need to immediately touch up the filename to remove dashes (to make
the module importable), and remove the executable bit.

This script is in slightly rough shape, but it still works. A lot of
care went into its initial development. In good faith, I'm updating it
to the latest Python coding standards. If there is in interest in this
script, though, I'll be asking for a contributor to take care of it
further.

I'm only doing a very quick best-effort to preserve this script, to help
keep it from breaking further. I think there are pending ideas swirling
on the right way to implement better SDKs and better clients, and this
script might be a handy reference for those discussions. It presents
some interesting design problems, like static type safety when using a
dynamic RPC mechanism.
I believe it's worth preserving the effort and care that went into
making this script by updating it to work with our current
infrastructure. However, I am disabling the requirement for docstrings
in this file.
If you would like to help improve this script, please add docstrings
alongside any refactors or rejuvenations you might apply at that time.

Turn that nice usage comment into a docstring.

optparse isn't supported anymore, it's from the python2 days. Replace it
with the mostly similar argparse.

- Line length should be < 80
- You shouldn't perform unscoped imports except at the top of the module
Notably, the sys.path hack creates problems with the import rule. This
will be fixed later.

By leaving the script absent for a commit, git-blame travels to the new
file instead of staying on the shim.

Move qom-fuse over to the python package now that it passes the
linter. Update the import paradigms so that it continues to pass in the
context of the Python package.
