83ecdb18eb accel/tcg/tcg-accel-ops-rr: ensure fairness with icount
The round-robin scheduler will iterate over the CPU list with an
assigned budget until the next timer expiry and may exit early because
of a TB exit. This is fine under normal operation but with icount
enabled and SMP it is possible for a CPU to be starved of run time and
the system live-locks.

For example, booting a riscv64 platform with '-icount
shift=0,align=off,sleep=on -smp 2' we observe a livelock once the kernel
has timers enabled and starts performing TLB shootdowns. In this case
we have CPU 0 in M-mode with interrupts disabled sending an IPI to CPU
1. As we enter the TCG loop, we assign the icount budget to next timer
interrupt to CPU 0 and begin executing where the guest is sat in a busy
loop exhausting all of the budget before we try to execute CPU 1 which
is the target of the IPI but CPU 1 is left with no budget with which to
execute and the process repeats.

We try here to add some fairness by splitting the budget across all of
the CPUs on the thread fairly before entering each one. The CPU count
is cached on CPU list generation ID to avoid iterating the list on each
loop iteration. With this change it is possible to boot an SMP rv64
guest with icount enabled and no hangs.

When PMP entry overlap part of the page, we'll set the tlb_size to 1, which

e726acd5b8 accel/tcg: Report one-insn-per-tb in 'info jit', not 'info status'
Currently we report whether the TCG accelerator is in
'one-insn-per-tb' mode in the 'info status' output. This is a pretty
minor piece of TCG specific information, and we want to deprecate the
'singlestep' field of the associated QMP command. Move the
'one-insn-per-tb' reporting to 'info jit'.

We don't need a deprecate-and-drop period for this because the
HMP interface has no stability guarantees.

0e33928cd9 accel/tcg: Use one_insn_per_tb global instead of old singlestep global
The only place left that looks at the old 'singlestep' global
variable is the TCG curr_cflags() function. Replace the old global
with a new 'one_insn_per_tb' which is defined in tcg-all.c and
declared in accel/tcg/internal.h. This keeps it restricted to the
TCG code, unlike 'singlestep' which was available to every file in
the system and defined in multiple different places for softmmu vs
linux-user vs bsd-user.

While we're making this change, use qatomic_read() and qatomic_set()
on the accesses to the new global, because TCG will read it without
holding a lock.

3cfb0456c3 make one-insn-per-tb an accel option
This commit adds 'one-insn-per-tb' as a property on the TCG
accelerator object, so you can enable it with
   -accel tcg,one-insn-per-tb=on

It has the same behaviour as the existing '-singlestep' command line
option. We use a different name because 'singlestep' has always been
a confusing choice, because it doesn't have anything to do with
single-stepping the CPU. What it does do is force TCG emulation to
put one guest instruction in each TB, which can be useful in some
situations (such as analysing debug logs).

The existing '-singlestep' commandline options are decoupled from the
global 'singlestep' variable and instead now are syntactic sugar for
setting the accel property. (These can then go away after a
deprecation period.)

The global variable remains for the moment as:
 * what the TCG code looks at to change its behaviour
 * what HMP and QMP use to query and set the behaviour

In the following commits we'll clean those up to not directly
look at the global variable.

1ff4a81bd3 tcg: use QTree instead of GTree
qemu-user can hang in a multi-threaded fork. One common
reason is that when creating a TB, between fork and exec
we manipulate a GTree whose memory allocator (GSlice) is
not fork-safe.

Although POSIX does not mandate it, the system's allocator
(e.g. tcmalloc, libc malloc) is probably fork-safe.

Fix some of these hangs by using QTree, which uses the system's
allocator regardless of the Glib version that we used at
configuration time.

Tested with the test program in the original bug report, i.e.:
```
void garble() {
  int pid = fork();
  if (pid == 0) {
    exit(0);
  } else {
    int wstatus;
    waitpid(pid, &wstatus, 0);
  }
}
void supragarble(unsigned depth) {
  if (depth == 0)
    return ;
  std::thread a(supragarble, depth-1);
  std::thread b(supragarble, depth-1);
  garble();
  a.join();
  b.join();
}
int main() {
  supragarble(10);
}
2dd5b7a1b9 accel/tcg: Move jmp-cache CF_PCREL checks to caller
tb-jmp-cache.h contains a few small functions that only exist to hide a
CF_PCREL check, however the caller often already performs such a check.
This patch moves CF_PCREL checks from the callee to the caller, and also
removes these functions which now only hide an access of the jmp-cache.
1770b2f2d3 accel/tcg: Add 'size' param to probe_access_flags()
probe_access_flags() as it is today uses probe_access_full(), which in
turn uses probe_access_internal() with size = 0. probe_access_internal()
then uses the size to call the tlb_fill() callback for the given CPU.
This size param ('fault_size' as probe_access_internal() calls it) is
ignored by most existing .tlb_fill callback implementations, e.g.
arm_cpu_tlb_fill(), ppc_cpu_tlb_fill(), x86_cpu_tlb_fill() and
mips_cpu_tlb_fill() to name a few.
But RISC-V riscv_cpu_tlb_fill() actually uses it. The 'size' parameter
is used to check for PMP (Physical Memory Protection) access. This is
necessary because PMP does not make any guarantees about all the bytes
of the same page having the same permissions, i.e. the same page can
have different PMP properties, so we're forced to make sub-page range
checks. To allow RISC-V emulation to do a probe_acess_flags() that
covers PMP, we need to either add a 'size' param to the existing
probe_acess_flags() or create a new interface (e.g.
probe_access_range_flags).
There are quite a few probe_* APIs already, so let's add a 'size' param
to probe_access_flags() and re-use this API. This is done by open coding
what probe_access_full() does inside probe_acess_flags() and passing the
'size' param to probe_acess_internal(). Existing probe_access_flags()
callers use size = 0 to not change their current API usage. 'size' is
asserted to enforce single page access like probe_access() already does.
No behavioral changes intended.
5b5968c477 replay: Extract core API to 'exec/replay-core.h'
replay API is used deeply within TCG common code (common to user
and system emulation). Unfortunately "sysemu/replay.h" requires
some QAPI headers for few system-specific declarations, example:
  void replay_input_event(QemuConsole *src, InputEvent *evt);
Since commit c2651c0eaa ("qapi/meson: Restrict UI module to system
emulation and tools") the QAPI header defining the InputEvent is
not generated anymore.
To keep it simple, extract the 'core' replay prototypes to a new
"exec/replay-core.h" header which we include in the TCG code that
doesn't need the rest of the replay API.
3fd62e73ad plugins: fix optimization in plugin_gen_disable_mem_helpers
We were mistakenly checking tcg_ctx->plugin_insn as a canary to know
whether the TB had emitted helpers that might have accessed memory.
The problem is that tcg_ctx->plugin_insn gets updated on every
instruction in the TB, which results in us wrongly performing the
optimization (i.e. not clearing cpu->plugin_mem_cbs) way too often,
since it's not rare that the last instruction in the TB doesn't
use helpers.
Fix it by tracking a per-TB canary.
While at it, expand documentation.
68ba85cecc coroutine: Split qemu/coroutine-core.h off qemu/coroutine.h
qemu/coroutine.h and qemu/lockable.h include each other.
They need each other only in macro expansions, so we could simply drop
both inclusions to break the loop, and add suitable includes to files
that expand the macros.
Instead, move a part of qemu/coroutine.h to new qemu/coroutine-core.h
so that qemu/coroutine-core.h doesn't need qemu/lockable.h, and
qemu/lockable.h only needs qemu/coroutine-core.h.  Result:
883f2c591f bulk: Rename TARGET_FMT_plx -> HWADDR_FMT_plx
The 'hwaddr' type is defined in "exec/hwaddr.h" as:
    hwaddr is the type of a physical address
   (its size can be different from 'target_ulong').
All definitions use the 'HWADDR_' prefix, except TARGET_FMT_plx:
 $ fgrep define include/exec/hwaddr.h
 #define HWADDR_H
 #define HWADDR_BITS 64
 #define HWADDR_MAX UINT64_MAX
 #define TARGET_FMT_plx "%016" PRIx64
         ^^^^^^
 #define HWADDR_PRId PRId64
 #define HWADDR_PRIi PRIi64
 #define HWADDR_PRIo PRIo64
 #define HWADDR_PRIu PRIu64
 #define HWADDR_PRIx PRIx64
 #define HWADDR_PRIX PRIX64
Since hwaddr's size can be *different* from target_ulong, it is
very confusing to read one of its format using the 'TARGET_FMT_'
prefix, normally used for the target_long / target_ulong types:
$ fgrep TARGET_FMT_ include/exec/cpu-defs.h
 #define TARGET_FMT_lx "%08x"
 #define TARGET_FMT_ld "%d"
 #define TARGET_FMT_lu "%u"
 #define TARGET_FMT_lx "%016" PRIx64
 #define TARGET_FMT_ld "%" PRId64
 #define TARGET_FMT_lu "%" PRIu64
Apparently this format was missed during commit a8170e5e97
("Rename target_phys_addr_t to hwaddr"), so complete it by
doing a bulk-rename with:
 $ sed -i -e s/TARGET_FMT_plx/HWADDR_FMT_plx/g $(git grep -l TARGET_FMT_plx)
8f39e01db9 accel/tcg: Call tb_invalidate_phys_page for PAGE_RESET
When PAGE_RESET is set, we are replacing pages with new
content, which means that we need to invalidate existing
cached data, such as TranslationBlocks.  Perform the
reset invalidate while we're doing other invalidates,
which allows us to remove the separate invalidates from
the user-only mmap/munmap/mprotect routines.
In addition, restrict invalidation to PAGE_EXEC pages.
Since cdf7130851, we have validated PAGE_EXEC is present
before translation, which means we can assume that if the
bit is not present, there are no translations to invalidate.
69993c4e62 accel/tcg: Add a quicker check for breakpoints
Profiling QEMU during Fedora 35 for PPC64 boot revealed that a
considerable amount of time was being spent in
check_for_breakpoints() (0.61% of total time on PPC64 and 2.19% on
amd64), even though it was just checking that its queue was empty
and returning, when no breakpoints were set. It turns out this
function is not inlined by the compiler and it's always called by
helper_lookup_tb_ptr(), one of the most called functions.
By leaving only the check for empty queue in
check_for_breakpoints() and moving the remaining code to
check_for_breakpoints_slow(), called only when the queue is not
empty, it's possible to avoid the call overhead. An improvement of
about 3% in total time was measured on POWER9.
0585105c80 Revert "accel/tcg: Init TCG cflags in vCPU thread handler"
Commit a82fd5a4ec was intended to be a code cleanup, but
unfortunately it has a bug. It moves the initialization of the
TCG cflags from the "start a new vcpu" function to the
thread handler; this is fine when each vcpu has its own thread,
but when we are doing round-robin of vcpus on a single thread
we end up only initializing the cflags for CPU 0, not for any
of the others.
The most obvious effect of this bug is that running in icount
mode with more than one CPU is broken; typically the guest
hangs shortly after it brings up the secondary CPUs.
This reverts commit a82fd5a4ec.
f93b76958a linux-user: Passthrough MADV_DONTNEED for certain file mappings
This is a follow-up for commit 892a4f6a75 ("linux-user: Add partial
support for MADV_DONTNEED"), which added passthrough for anonymous
mappings. File mappings can be handled in a similar manner.
In order to do that, mark pages, for which mmap() was passed through,
with PAGE_PASSTHROUGH, and then allow madvise() passthrough for these
pages. Drop the explicit PAGE_ANON check, since anonymous mappings are
expected to have PAGE_PASSTHROUGH anyway.
Add PAGE_PASSTHROUGH to PAGE_STICKY in order to keep it on mprotect().
50627f1b7b accel/tcg: Add fast path for translator_ld*
Cache the translation from guest to host address, so we may
use direct loads when we hit on the primary translation page.
Look up the second translation page only once, during translation.
This obviates another lookup of the second page within tb_gen_code
after translation.
Fixes a bug in that plugin_insn_append should be passed the bytes
in the original memory order, not bswapped by pieces.
c7f26ded6d icount: Take iothread lock when running QEMU timers
The function icount_prepare_for_run() is called with the iothread
unlocked, but it can call icount_notify_aio_contexts() which will
run qemu timer handlers. Those are supposed to be run only with
the iothread lock held, so take the lock while we do that.
Since icount mode runs everything on a single thread anyway,
not holding the lock is likely mostly not going to introduce
races, but it can cause us to trip over assertions that we
do hold the lock, such as the one reported in issue 1130.
7f2cf760fe linux-user/aarch64: Do not clear PROT_MTE on mprotect
The documentation for PROT_MTE says that it cannot be cleared
by mprotect.  Further, the implementation of the VM_ARCH_CLEAR bit,
contains PROT_BTI confiming that bit should be cleared.
Introduce PAGE_TARGET_STICKY to allow target/arch/cpu.h to control
which bits may be reset during page_set_flags.  This is sort of the
opposite of VM_ARCH_CLEAR, but works better with qemu's PAGE_* bits
that are separate from PROT_* bits.
