cURL 7.16.0 was released in October 2006. Just remove code that is
in all likelihood not being used anywhere, and require the oldest version
found in currently supported distros, which is 7.29.0 from CentOS 7.
pkg-config is enough for QEMU, since it does not need extra information
such as the path for certicate authorities. All supported platforms
today will all have pkg-config for curl, so we can drop curl-config.

This patch adds a flag to enable/disable control flow integrity checks
on indirect function calls.
This feature only allows indirect function calls at runtime to functions
with compatible signatures.
This feature is only provided by LLVM/Clang, and depends on link-time
optimization which is currently supported only with LLVM/Clang >= 6.0
We also add an option to enable a debugging version of cfi, with verbose
output in case of a CFI violation.
CFI on indirect function calls does not support calls to functions in
shared libraries (since they were not known at compile time), and such
calls are forbidden. QEMU relies on dlopen/dlsym when using modules,
so we make modules incompatible with CFI.
All the checks are performed in meson.build. configure is only used to
forward the flags to meson

By default QEMU enables a lot of features if it can probe and find the
support libraries. It also enables a bunch of features by default.
This patch adds the ability to build --without-default-features which
can be paired with a --without-default-devices for a barely functional
build.
The main use case for this is testing our build assumptions and for
minimising the amount of stuff you build if you just want to test a
particular feature on your relatively slow emulated test system. On
it's own I go from:
$ ls -lh qemu-system-aarch64

Coverity always complains about switch-case statements that fall through
the next one when there is no comment in between - which could indicate
a forgotten "break" statement. Instead of handling these issues after
they have been committed, it would be better to avoid them in the build
process already. Thus let's enable the -Wimplicit-fallthrough warning now.
The "=2" level seems to be a good compromise between being too strict and
too generic about the possible comments, so we'll start with "=2" for now.

Recent binutils changes dropping unsupported options [1] caused a build

This isn't really a regression in ld.bfd, filing the bug upstream
revealed that this never worked as a ld flag [2] - in fact it seems we
were by accident setting --nmagic).
Since it never had the wanted effect this usage of LDFLAGS_NOPIE, should be
droppable without any effect. This also is the only use-case of LDFLAGS_NOPIE
in .mak, therefore we can also remove it from being added there.

QEMU binaries no longer launch successfully with recent SystemTap
releases. This is because modular QEMU builds link the sdt semaphores
into the main binary instead of into the shared objects where they are
used. The symbol visibility of semaphores is 'hidden' and the dynamic
linker prints an error during module loading:
$ ./configure --enable-trace-backends=dtrace --enable-modules ...
...
Failed to open module: /builddir/build/BUILD/qemu-4.2.0/s390x-softmmu/../block-curl.so: undefined symbol: qemu_curl_close_semaphore
The long-term solution is to generate per-module dtrace .o files and
link them into the module instead of the main binary.
In the short term we can define STAP_SDT_V2 so dtrace(1) produces a .o
file with 'default' symbol visibility instead of 'hidden'. This
workaround is small and easier to merge for QEMU 5.2 and downstream
backports.

In commit 76346b6264 we tried to add a configure check that
the libgio pkg-config data was correct, which builds an executable
linked against it. Unfortunately this doesn't catch the problem
(missing static library dependency info), because a "do nothing" test
source file doesn't have any symbol references that cause the linker
to pull in .o files from libgio.a, and so we don't see the "missing
symbols from libmount" error that a full QEMU link triggers.
(The ineffective test went unnoticed because of a typo that
effectively disabled libgio unconditionally, but after commit
3569a5dfc1 fixed that, a static link of the system emulator on
Ubuntu stopped working again.)
Improve the gio test by having the test source fragment reference a
g_dbus function (which is what is indirectly causing us to end up
wanting functions from libmount).

The vhost-user protocol uses the Linux eventfd feature and is typically
connected to Linux kvm.ko ioeventfd and irqfd file descriptors. The
protocol specification in docs/interop/vhost-user.rst does not describe
how platforms without eventfd support work.
The QEMU vhost-user devices compile on other POSIX host operating
systems because eventfd usage is abstracted in QEMU. The libvhost-user
programs in contrib/ do not compile but we failed to notice since they
are not built by default.
Make it clear that vhost-user is only supported on Linux for the time
being. If someone wishes to support it on other platforms then the
details can be added to vhost-user.rst and CI jobs can test the feature
to prevent bitrot.

libraries for gio-2.0 which don't actually work when compiling
statically. (Specifically, the returned library string includes
-lmount, but not -lblkid which -lmount depends upon, so linking
fails due to missing symbols.)

Currently it is unknown whether virtiofsd will be built at
configuration time. It will be automatically built when dependency
is met. Also, required libraries are not clear.
To make this clear, add configure option --{enable,disable}-virtiofsd.
The default is the same as current (enabled if available) like many
other options. When --enable-virtiofsd is given and dependency is not
met, we get:
ERROR: Problem encountered: virtiofsd requires libcap-ng-devel and seccomp-devel
or

Initially, libudev detection was bundled with --enable-mpath because
qemu-pr-helper was the only user of libudev. Recently however the USB
U2F emulation has also started using libudev, so add a separate
option. This also allows 1) disabling libudev if desired for static
builds and 2) for non-static builds, requiring libudev even if
multipath support is undesirable.
The multipath test is adjusted, because it is now possible to enter it
with configurations that should fail, such as --static --enable-mpath
--disable-libudev.

Now that the build is done entirely by Meson, there is no need
to keep the Makefile conversion. Instead, we can ask Ninja about
the targets it exposes and forward them.
The main advantages are, from smallest to largest:
- reducing the possible namespace pollution within the Makefile
- removal of a relatively large Python program
- faster build because parsing Makefile.ninja is slower than
parsing build.ninja; and faster build after Meson runs because
we do not have to generate Makefile.ninja.
- tracking of command lines, which provides more accurate rebuilds
In addition the change removes the requirement for GNU make 3.82, which
was annoying on Mac, and avoids bugs on Windows due to ninjatool not
knowing how to convert Windows escapes to POSIX escapes.

This thread from a little over a year ago:
http://lists.wpkg.org/pipermail/sheepdog/2019-March/thread.html
states that sheepdog is no longer actively developed. The only mentioned
users are some companies who are said to have it for legacy reasons with
plans to replace it by Ceph. There is talk about cutting out existing
features to turn it into a simple demo of how to write a distributed
block service. There is no evidence of anyone working on that idea:
https://github.com/sheepdog/sheepdog/commits/master
No real commits to git since Jan 2018, and before then just some minor
technical debt cleanup.
There is essentially no activity on the mailing list aside from
patches to QEMU that get CC'd due to our MAINTAINERS entry.
Fedora packages for sheepdog failed to build from upstream source
because of the more strict linker that no longer merges duplicate
global symbols. Fedora patches it to add the missing "extern"
annotations and presumably other distros do to, but upstream source
remains broken.
There is only basic compile testing, no functional testing of the
driver.
Since there are no build pre-requisites the sheepdog driver is currently
enabled unconditionally. This would result in configure issuing a
deprecation warning by default for all users. Thus the configure default
is changed to disable it, requiring users to pass --enable-sheepdog to
build the driver.

Because most files in QEMU are grouped into static libraries, Meson conservatively
compiles them with -fPIC. This is overkill and produces slowdowns up to 20% on
some TCG tests.
As a stopgap measure, use the b_staticpic option to limit the slowdown to
--enable-pie. https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/pull/7760 will allow

Environment variables like CFLAGS are easy to accidentally change. Meson
warns if that happens, but in a project with a lot of configuration that
is easy to lose. It is also surprising behavior since meson caches -D
options and remembers those on reconfiguration (which we rely on,
since configure options become -D options).
By placing the user-provided CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS and LDFLAGS in the
cross file, we at least get consistent behavior. These environment
variables are still ugly and not really recommended, but there are
distros that rely on them. For the gory details, refer to
https://github.com/mesonbuild/meson/issues/4664.

If the CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS or LDFLAGS variables are present in the environment,
any modification made within the configure script is passed down to Meson.
This is particularly undesirable for the "-pie" option, since it overrides
"-shared" and thus messes up the linker flags for shared modules.
Using a separate variable therefore fixes the bug, while clarifying that
the scope of these CFLAGS is just the configure script.
We also do not need to pass those variables in config-host.mak; they
were only used for printing the summary now that all submodules are
built with handwritten Meson rules). For now synthesize CFLAGS in the
configuration summary, the next patch will also pass them in a cleaner
way using the cross file.

Nor can we add a meson.build file to capstone/, because the git

We have an exploding complexity problem in the testing so lets just
move the more involved plugins into contrib. tests/plugins still exist
for the basic plugins that exercise the API. We restore the old
pre-meson style Makefile for contrib as it also doubles as a guide for
out-of-tree plugin builds.
While we are at it add some examples to the documentation and a

All Meson executables should specify their dependencies explicitly, either
directly or indirectly via declare_dependency. Makefiles instead did
not propagate dependencies correctly from static libraries, for example.
Therefore, flags for dependencies need not be included in QEMU_CFLAGS.
LIBS is not used at all, so drop that one as well.
In a few cases the dependencies were not yet specified, so add them.

The glib compilation flags were added to QEMU_CFLAGS. While we still
want them to be added to all compilation commands (at least for now),
do that via GLIB_CFLAGS rather than via QEMU_CFLAGS. This shows that
glib is a special case and makes it clearer that QEMU_CFLAGS is only
about compiler commands and not dependencies.

Gnutls was also not added as a dependancy when gcrypt is enabled.
Attempting to add the library dependencies at the same time as the
source dependencies is error prone, as there are alot of different
rules for picking which sources to use, and some of the source files
use code level conditionals intead. It is thus clearer to add the
library dependencies separately.

In case the qemu-keymap tool generating them is neither installed on the
system nor built from sources (due to xkbcommon not being available)
qemu will not find the keymaps when started directly from the build
tree,
This happens because commit ddcf607fa3 ("meson: drop keymaps symlink")
removed the symlink to the source tree, and the special handling for
install doesn't help in case we do not install qemu.
Lets fix that by simply copying over the file from the source tree as

When using --enable-werror for the macOS builders in the Cirrus-CI,
the atomic64 test is currently failing, and config.log shows a bunch
of error messages like this:

'__atomic_load_8' is invalid in C99 [-Werror,-Wimplicit-function-declaration]
y = __atomic_load_8(&x, 0);
^
config-temp/qemu-conf.c:6:7: error: this function declaration is not a
prototype [-Werror,-Wstrict-prototypes]
Seems like these __atomic_*_8 functions are available in one of the
libraries there, so that the test links and passes there when not
using --enable-werror. But there does not seem to be a valid prototype
for them in any of the header files, so that the test fails when using
--enable-werror.
Fix it by using the "official" built-in functions instead (see e.g.
https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/_005f_005fatomic-Builtins.html).
We are not using the *_8 variants in QEMU anyway.

This patch implements functionality of following ioctls:
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_CREATE - Creating a btrfs subvolume
Create a btrfs subvolume. The subvolume is created using the ioctl's
third argument which represents a pointer to a following structure
type:
struct btrfs_ioctl_vol_args {
__s64 fd;
char name[BTRFS_PATH_NAME_MAX + 1];
};
Before calling this ioctl, the fields of this structure should be filled
with aproppriate values. The fd field represents the file descriptor
value of the subvolume and the name field represents the subvolume
path.
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETFLAGS - Getting subvolume flags
Read the flags of the btrfs subvolume. The flags are read using
the ioctl's third argument that is a pointer of __u64 (unsigned long).
The third argument represents a bit mask that can be composed of following
values:
BTRFS_SUBVOL_RDONLY (1ULL << 1)
BTRFS_SUBVOL_QGROUP_INHERIT (1ULL << 2)
BTRFS_DEVICE_SPEC_BY_ID (1ULL << 3)
BTRFS_SUBVOL_SPEC_BY_ID (1ULL << 4)
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_SETFLAGS - Setting subvolume flags
Set the flags of the btrfs subvolume. The flags are set using the
ioctl's third argument that is a pointer of __u64 (unsigned long).
The third argument represents a bit mask that can be composed of same
values as in the case of previous ioctl (BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETFLAGS).
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETINFO - Getting subvolume information
Read information about the subvolume. The subvolume information is
returned in the ioctl's third argument which represents a pointer to
a following structure type:
struct btrfs_ioctl_get_subvol_info_args {
/* Id of this subvolume */
__u64 treeid;
/* Name of this subvolume, used to get the real name at mount point */
char name[BTRFS_VOL_NAME_MAX + 1];
/*
* Id of the subvolume which contains this subvolume.
* Zero for top-level subvolume or a deleted subvolume.
*/
__u64 parent_id;
/*
* Inode number of the directory which contains this subvolume.
* Zero for top-level subvolume or a deleted subvolume
*/
__u64 dirid;
/* Latest transaction id of this subvolume */
__u64 generation;
/* Flags of this subvolume */
__u64 flags;
/* UUID of this subvolume */
__u8 uuid[BTRFS_UUID_SIZE];
/*
* UUID of the subvolume of which this subvolume is a snapshot.
* All zero for a non-snapshot subvolume.
*/
__u8 parent_uuid[BTRFS_UUID_SIZE];
/*
* UUID of the subvolume from which this subvolume was received.
* All zero for non-received subvolume.
*/
__u8 received_uuid[BTRFS_UUID_SIZE];
/* Transaction id indicating when change/create/send/receive happened */
__u64 ctransid;
__u64 otransid;
__u64 stransid;
__u64 rtransid;
/* Time corresponding to c/o/s/rtransid */
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec ctime;
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec otime;
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec stime;
struct btrfs_ioctl_timespec rtime;
/* Must be zero */
__u64 reserved[8];
};
All of the fields of this structure are filled after the ioctl call.
Implementation notes:
Ioctls BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_CREATE and BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETINFO have structure
types as third arguments. That is the reason why a corresponding definition
are added in file 'linux-user/syscall_types.h'.
The line '#include <linux/btrfs.h>' is added in file 'linux-user/syscall.c' to
recognise preprocessor definitions for these ioctls. Since the file "linux/btrfs.h"
was added in the kernel version 3.9, it is enwrapped in an #ifdef statement
with parameter CONFIG_BTRFS which is defined in 'configure' if the
header file is present.

If there are less than 2 arguments in version_ge(), the second
'shift' prints this error:
../configure: line 232: shift: shift count out of range
As Eric suggested, we can use 'shift ${2:+2}' which works out to
'shift 2' if $2 is set, or 'shift' (implicitly shift 1) if $2
is not set.
This patch replaces both 'shift; shift' occurrences in version_ge()
with 'shift ${2:+2}'.

Meson warns if xgettext is not found. In the future we may want to add
a required argument to i18n.gettext(); in the meanwhile, I am adding a
--enable-gettext/--disable-gettext option and feature detection in
configure. This preserves QEMU's default behavior of detecting system
features, without any warning, if neither --enable-* nor --disable-*
is requested.

For now, sphinx is run on every invocation of make. The previous mechanism

The most interesting or most complicated part here is the syscall_nr.h
generators. In order to keep the generation logic all in meson.build,
I am adding to config_target the name of the .tbl file, and making the
generated file syscall<SUFFIX>_nr.h for input file syscall<SUFFIX>.tbl.
For architectures where the input file is not named syscall_nr.tbl,
syscall_nr.h has to be a source file; it's just a forwarder for x86
(i386/x86_64), while for MIPS64 it chooses between N32 and N64 ABIs.

This shows how to do some "computations" in meson.build using its array
and dictionary data structures, and also a basic usage of the sourceset
module for conditional compilation.
Notice the new "if have_system" part of util/meson.build, which fixes
a bug in the old build system was buggy: util/dbus.c was built even for
non-softmmu builds, but the dependency on -lgio was lost when the linking
was done through libqemuutil.a. Because all of its users required gio
otherwise, the bug was hidden. Meson instead propagates libqemuutil's
dependencies down to its users, and shows the problem.

The Meson build system is integrated in the existing configure/make steps
by invoking Meson from the configure script and converting Meson's build.ninja
rules to an included Makefile.
build.ninja already provides tags/ctags/cscope rules, so they are removed.
Signed-off-by: Paolo Bonzini <pbonzini@redhat.com>
Meson requires the build dir to be separate from the source tree. Many
people are used to just running "./configure && make" though and the
meson conversion breaks that.
This introduces some backcompat support to make it appear as if an
"in source tree" build is being done, but with the results in the
"build/" directory. This allows "./configure && make" to work as it
did historically, albeit with the output binaries staying under build/.

We already have a nice --enable-sanitizers option to enable
AddressSanitizer. There is no reason to duplicate and force this
functionality in --enable-fuzzing. In the future, if more sanitizers are
added to --enable-sanitizers, it might be impossible to build with both
--enable-sanitizers and --enable-fuzzing, since not all sanitizers are
compatible with libFuzzer. In that case, we could enable ASAN with

Recent versions of Solaris (v11.4) now feature an openpty() function,
too, causing a build failure since we ship our own implementation of
openpty() for Solaris in util/qemu-openpty.c so far. Since there are
now both variants available in the wild, with and without this function
(and illumos is said to not have this function yet), let's introduce a
proper HAVE_OPENPTY define for this to fix the build failure.

Add a pair of configure options --{enable,disable}-libdaxctl to control
whether QEMU is compiled with libdaxctl [1]. Libdaxctl is a utility
library for managing the device dax subsystem.
QEMU uses mmap(2) to maps vNVDIMM backends and aligns the mapping
address to the page size (getpagesize(2)) by default. However, some
types of backends may require an alignment different than the page
size. The 'align' option is provided to memory-backend-file to allow
users to specify the proper alignment.
For device dax (e.g., /dev/dax0.0), the 'align' option needs to match
the alignment requirement of the device dax, which can be fetched
through the APIs of libdaxctl version 57 or up.
[1] Libdaxctl is a part of ndctl project.
The project's repository is: https://github.com/pmem/ndctl
For more information about libdaxctl APIs, you can refer to the
comments in source code of: pmem/ndctl/daxctl/lib/libdaxctl.c.

This patch adds a flag to enable/disable the SafeStack instrumentation
provided by LLVM.
On enable, make sure that the compiler supports the flags, and that we
are using the proper coroutine implementation (coroutine-ucontext).
On disable, explicitly disable the option if it was enabled by default.
While SafeStack is supported only on Linux, NetBSD, FreeBSD and macOS,
we are not checking for the O.S. since this is already done by LLVM.

On aarch64, gcc 9.3 is generating
qemu/exec.c: In function ‘address_space_translate_iommu’:
qemu/exec.c:431:28: note: parameter passing for argument of type \
‘MemTxAttrs’ {aka ‘struct MemTxAttrs’} changed in GCC 9.1
and many other repetitions. This structure, and the functions
amongst which it is passed, are not part of a QEMU public API.
Therefore we do not care how the compiler passes the argument,
so long as the compiler is self-consistent.
The only portion of QEMU which does have a public api, and so
must have a stable abi, is "qemu/plugin.h". We test this by
forcing -Wpsabi in tests/plugin/Makefile.

Clang 10 enables this by default with -Wtype-limit.
All of the instances flagged by this Werror so far have been
cases in which we really do want the compiler to optimize away
the test completely. Disabling the warning will avoid having
to add ifdefs to work around this.

We tried running QEMU under tsan in 2016, but tsan's lack of support for
longjmp-based fibers was a blocker:

Fortunately, thread sanitizer gained fiber support in early 2019:

This patch brings tsan support upstream by importing the patch that annotated
QEMU's coroutines as tsan fibers in Android's QEMU fork:

GDB's remote protocol requires M-profile cores to use the feature
name 'org.gnu.gdb.arm.m-profile' instead of the 'org.gnu.gdb.arm.core'
feature used for A- and R-profile cores. We weren't doing this, which
meant GDB treated our M-profile cores like A-profile ones. This mostly
doesn't matter, but for instance means that it doesn't correctly
handle backtraces where an M-profile exception frame is involved.
Ship a copy of GDB's arm-m-profile.xml and use it on the M-profile
cores. The integer registers have the same offsets as the
arm-core.xml, but register 25 is the M-profile XPSR rather than the
A-profile CPSR, so we need to update arm_cpu_gdb_read_register() and
arm_cpu_gdb_write_register() to handle XSPR reads and writes.

it uses the "org.gnu.gdb.coldfire.core" feature name and gdb 8.3 then expects
