This function does some initialization that needs to be done after
machine init. The function may be eventually removed if we move the
CPUState.numa_node initialization to the CPU init code, but while the
function exists, lets give it a name that makes sense.

Some are called do_COMMAND() (old ones, usually), some hmp_COMMAND(),
and sometimes COMMAND pointlessly differs in spelling.
Normalize to hmp_COMMAND(), where COMMAND is exactly the command name
with '-' replaced by '_'.
Exceptions:
* do_device_add() and client_migrate_info() *not* renamed to
hmp_device_add(), hmp_client_migrate_info(), because they're also
QMP handlers. They still need to be converted to QAPI.
* do_memory_dump(), do_physical_memory_dump(), do_ioport_read(),
do_ioport_write() renamed do hmp_* instead of hmp_x(), hmp_xp(),
hmp_i(), hmp_o(), because those names are too cryptic for my taste.
* do_info_help() renamed to hmp_info_help() instead of hmp_info(),
because it only covers help.

monitor_parse() desugars --monitor, --qmp and -qmp-pretty to --mon.
The ID it picks can clash with a user-specified ID. When it happens,
the error message is misleading.
Reproducer:
$ qemu --mon id=compat_monitor0 --monitor stdio
Message before the patch:
duplicate chardev: compat_monitor0
There's no "duplicate chardev" here. The problem is a duplicate
monitor ID. Moreover, the message provides no clue which option
caused the problem. The patch changes the message to:
qemu: --monitor stdio: Duplicate ID 'compat_monitor0' for mon
monitor_parse() is also used for creating a default monitor, but
that's not done when the user specifies a monitor, so an ID clash is
impossible then.

Until now the logic was: create the usb controller if:

Modified the logic to:

The usual semihosting behaviour is to process the system calls locally and
return; unfortuantelly the initial implementation dinamically changed the
target to GDB during debug sessions, which, for the usual arm-none-eabi-gdb,
is not implemented. The result was that during debug sessions the semihosting
calls were discarded.
This patch adds a configuration variable and an option to set it on the
command line:
-semihosting-config [enable=on|off,]target=native|gdb|auto
This option enables semihosting and defines where the semihosting calls will
be addressed, to QEMU ('native') or to GDB ('gdb'). The default is auto, which
means 'gdb' during debug sessions and 'native' otherwise.

Differently from older versions, SMBIOS version 2.6 is explicit about
the encoding of UUID fields:
> Although RFC 4122 recommends network byte order for all fields, the PC
> industry (including the ACPI, UEFI, and Microsoft specifications) has
> consistently used little-endian byte encoding for the first three fields:
> time_low, time_mid, time_hi_and_version. The same encoding, also known as
> wire format, should also be used for the SMBIOS representation of the UUID.
>
> The UUID {00112233-4455-6677-8899-AABBCCDDEEFF} would thus be represented
> as 33 22 11 00 55 44 77 66 88 99 AA BB CC DD EE FF.
The dmidecode tool implements this and decodes the above "wire format"
when SMBIOS version >= 2.6. We moved from SMBIOS version 2.4 to 2.8 when
we started building the SMBIOS entry point inside QEMU, on commit
c97294ec1b.
Change smbios_build_type_1_table() to encode the UUID as specified.
To make sure we won't change the guest-visible UUID when upgrading to a
newer QEMU version, keep the old behavior on pc-*-2.1 and older.

Commit 261747f1 ("vl: Use MachineClass instead of global QEMUMachine
list") broke the ordering of the machine types in the user-visible output
of
qemu-system-XXXX -M \?
This occurred because registration was rebased from a manually maintained
linked list to GLib hash tables:
qemu_register_machine()
type_register()
type_register_internal()
type_table_add()
g_hash_table_insert()
and because the listing was rebased accordingly, from the traversal of the
list to the traversal of the hash table (rendered as an ad-hoc list):
machine_parse()
object_class_get_list(TYPE_MACHINE)
object_class_foreach()
g_hash_table_foreach()
The current order is a "random" one, for practical purposes, which is
annoying for users.
Introduce new members QEMUMachine.family and MachineClass.family, allowing
machine types to be "clustered". Introduce a comparator function that
establishes a total ordering between machine types, ordering machine types
in the same family next to each other. In machine_parse(), list the
supported machine types sorted with the comparator function.
The comparator function:
- sorts whole families before standalone machine types,
- sorts whole families between each other in alphabetically increasing
order,
- sorts machine types inside the same family in alphabetically decreasing
order,
- sorts standalone machine types between each other in alphabetically
increasing order.
After this patch, all machine types are considered standalone, and
accordingly, the output is alphabetically ascending. This will be refined
in the following patches.
Effects on the x86_64 output:
Before:
> Supported machines are:
> pc-0.13 Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996)
> pc-i440fx-2.0 Standard PC (i440FX + PIIX, 1996)

In case of -daemonize, we write non-zero to the daemon
pipe only if pidfile creation failed, so the parent will
report error about pidfile problem. There's no need to
make special case for this, since all other errors are
reported by the child just fine. Let the parent report
error and simplify logic in os_daemonize().
This way, we don't need os_pidfile_error() function, since
it only prints error now, so put the error reporting printf
into the only place where qemu_create_pidfile() is called,
in vl.c.
While at it, fix wrong indentation in os_daemonize().

commit abfd9ce3(migration: dump vmstate info as a json
file for static analysis) introduce a new command,
'-dump-vmstate', that takes a filename
as an argument. When executed, QEMU will dump the vmstate information
for the machine type it's invoked with to the file, and quit.
However, only one instance of the -dump-vmstate option is supported.
If more were given, the vmstate_dump_file variable would be overwritten.
This fix also helps silence a Coverity error.

qemu_shutdown_requested may be interrupted by qemu_system_killed. If the
latter sets shutdown_requested after qemu_shutdown_requested has read it
but before it was cleared, the shutdown event is lost. Fix this by using
atomic_xchg.
This provides a different fix for the problem which commit 15124e142
attempts to deal with. That commit breaks use of ^C to drop into gdb,
and so this approach is better (and 15124e142 can be reverted).

This command lists PCMCIA sockets and cards. Only a few ARM boards
have sockets (akita, borzoi, connex, mainstone, spitz, terrier, tosa,
verdex, z2), the only card is the DSCM-1xxxx Hitachi Microdrive (qdev
"microdrive"), and it is only inserted during machine init, if ever.
So this command doesn't really tell anybody anything new so far.
Moreover, pcmcia_socket_unregister() has a use-after-free bug, flagged
by Coverity. Has never been used, because there has never been code
to eject a PCMCIA card.
Not worth fixing & converting to QMP. Remove it.

This patch adds the 'units_per_default_bus' property which
allows individual boards to declare their desired
index => (bus,unit) mapping for their default HBA, so that
boards such as Q35 can specify that its default if_ide HBA,
AHCI, only accepts one unit per bus.
This property only overrides the mapping for drives matching
the block_default_type interface.
This patch also adds this property to *all* past and present
Q35 machine types. This retroactive addition is justified
because the previous erroneous index=>(bus,unit) mappings
caused by lack of such a property were not utilized due to
lack of initialization code in the Q35 init routine.
Further, semantically, the Q35 board type has always had the
property that its default HBA, AHCI, only accepts one unit per
bus. The new code added to add devices to drives relies upon
the accuracy of this mapping. Thus, the property is applied
retroactively to reduce complexity of allowing IDE HBAs with
different units per bus.
Examples:
Prior to this patch, all IDE HBAs were assumed to use 2 units
per bus (Master, Slave). When using Q35 and AHCI, however, we
only allow one unit per bus.
-hdb foo.qcow2 would become index=1, or bus=0,unit=1.
-hdd foo.qcow2 would become index=3, or bus=1,unit=1.
-drive file=foo.qcow2,index=5 becomes bus=2,unit=1.
These are invalid for AHCI. They now become, under Q35 only:
-hdb foo.qcow2 --> index=1, bus=1, unit=0.
-hdd foo.qcow2 --> index=3, bus=3, unit=0.
-drive file=foo.qcow2,index=5 --> bus=5,unit=0.
The mapping is adjusted based on the fact that the default IF
for the Q35 machine type is IF_IDE, and units-per-default-bus
overrides the IDE mapping from its default of 2 units per bus
to just 1 unit per bus.

When users use command line options like -hda, -cdrom,
or even -drive if=ide, it is up to the board initialization
routines to pick up these drives and create backing
devices for them.
Some boards, like Q35, have not been doing this.
However, there is no warning explaining why certain
drive specifications are just silently ignored,
so this function adds a check to print some warnings
to assist users in debugging these sorts of issues
in the future.
This patch will not warn about drives added with if_none,
for which it is not possible to tell in advance if
the omission of a backing device is an issue.
A warning in these cases is considered appropriate.

Adjust the place of calling mlockall, calling mbind before mlockall
can remarkably reduce the time of VM's startup.

On a system with a low limit of open files the initialization
of the event notifier could fail and QEMU exits without printing any
error information to the user.
The problem can be easily reproduced by enforcing a low limit of open
files and start QEMU with enough I/O threads to hit this limit.
The same problem raises, without the creation of I/O threads, while
QEMU initializes the main event loop by enforcing an even lower limit of
open files.
This commit adds an error message on failure:
# qemu [...] -object iothread,id=iothread0 -object iothread,id=iothread1

Add Intel IOMMU emulation to q35 chipset and expose it to the guest.
1. Add a machine option. Users can use "-machine iommu=on|off" in the command
line to enable/disable Intel IOMMU. The default is off.
2. Accroding to the machine option, q35 will initialize the Intel IOMMU and
use pci_setup_iommu() to setup q35_host_dma_iommu() as the IOMMU function for
the pci bus.
3. q35_host_dma_iommu() will return different address space according to the
bus_num and devfn of the device.

We have the experience that the guest doesn't stop successfully
though it was instructed to shut down.
The root cause may be not in QEMU mostly. However, QEMU is often
suspected at the beginning just because the issue occurred in
virtualization environment.
Therefore, we need to affirm that QEMU received the shutdown
request and raised ACPI irq from "virsh shutdown" command,
virt-manger or stopping QEMU process to the VM .
So that we can affirm the problems was belonged to the Guset OS
rather than the QEMU itself.
When we stop guests by "virsh shutdown" command or virt-manger,
or stopping QEMU process, qemu_system_powerdown_request() or
qemu_system_shutdown_request() is called. Then the below functions
in main_loop_should_exit() of Vl.c are called roughly in the
following order.
if (qemu_powerdown_requested())
qemu_system_powerdown()
monitor_protocol_event(QEVENT_POWERDOWN, NULL)
OR
if(qemu_shutdown_requested()}
monitor_protocol_event(QEVENT_SHUTDOWN, NULL);
The tracepoint of monitor_protocol_event() already exists, but no
tracepoints are defined for qemu_system_powerdown_request() and
qemu_system_shutdown_request(). So this patch adds two tracepoints for
the two functions. We believe that it will become much easier to
isolate the problem mentioned above by these tracepoints.

This commit adds a new command, '-dump-vmstate', that takes a filename
as an argument. When executed, QEMU will dump the vmstate information
for the machine type it's invoked with to the file, and quit.
The JSON-format output can then be used to compare the vmstate info for
different QEMU versions, specifically to test whether live migration
would break due to changes in the vmstate data.
A Python script that compares the output of such JSON dumps is included
in the following commit.

If you add enough PCI devices then all mmio for them will not fit
below 4G which may not be the layout the user wanted. This allows
you to increase the below 4G address space that PCI devices can use
(aka decrease ram below 4G) and therefore in more cases not have any
mmio that is above 4G.
For example using "-machine pc,max-ram-below-4g=2G" on the command
line will limit the amount of ram that is below 4G to 2G.
Note: this machine option cannot be used to increase the amount

There patch protects vmstop_requested with a lock and introduces
qemu_system_vmstop_request_prepare.
Together with the new call to qemu_vmstop_requested in vm_start,
qemu_system_vmstop_request_prepare avoids a race where the VM could remain
stopped even though the iostatus of a block device has already been set
(for example).
qemu_system_vmstop_request_prepare however also lets the caller thread
delay observation of the state change until it has itself communicated
that change to the user. This delay avoids any possibility of a wrong
reordering of the BLOCK_IO_ERROR event and the subsequent STOP event.

glib versions prior to 2.31.0 require an explicit g_thread_init() call
to enable multi-threading.
Failure to initialize threading causes glib to take single-threaded code
paths without synchronization. For example, the g_slice allocator will
crash due to race conditions.
Fix this for all QEMU tool programs (qemu-nbd, qemu-io, qemu-img) by
moving the g_thread_init() call from vl.c:main() into a new
osdep.c:thread_init() constructor function.
thread_init() has __attribute__((constructor)) and is automatically
invoked by the runtime during startup.
We can now drop the "simple" trace backend's g_thread_init() call since
thread_init() already called it.
Note that we must keep coroutine-gthread.c's g_thread_init() call which
is located in a constructor function. There is no guarantee for
constructor function ordering so thread_init() may only be called later.

As suffixes do not make sense for sPAPR's device tree and
there is no way to filter them out on the BusState::get_fw_dev_path()
level, let's add an ability for the external caller to specify
whether to apply suffixes or not.
We could handle suffixes in SLOF (ignored for now) but this would require
serious rework in the node opening code in SLOF, which has no obvious
benefit for the currently emulated sPAPR machine.

Before spapr_vga_init will returned false if the vga is specified by
the command '-device VGA' because vga_interface_type was evaluated to
VGA_NONE. With the change in previous patch of this series,
spapr_vga_init should return true if it's told that the vga will be
initialized in flow of the generic devices initialization.
To keep '-nodefaults' have the semantics of bare minimum, it adds a
check of 'has_defaults' in usb_enabled() to avoid that a USB controller
is added by '-nodefautls, -device VGA' implicitly.
This patch also makes two cleanups:

many are included from qemu-common.h and the like, or,
for example, I don't see were we use win32-specific
stuff in vl.c (so that maybe #include <windows.h> might
be removed too).

Sure, CHS translation is an obscure topic, and legacy options for
hard-disk geometries are obscure as well. But since QEMU does nothing
with it except telling the BIOS, and since there "large" and "rechs"
are listed in the enums, parsing them seems to be the bare minimum.

Introduces USER_CREATABLE interface that must be implemented by
objects which are designed to created with -object CLI option or
object-add QMP command.
Interface provides an ability to do an optional second stage
initialization of the object created with -object/object-add
commands. By providing complete() callback, which is called
after the object properties were set.
It allows to:
* prevents misusing of -object/object-add by filtering out
objects that are not designed for it.
* generalize second stage backend initialization instead of
adding custom APIs to perform it
* early error detection of backend initialization at -object/
object-add time rather than through a proxy DEVICE object
that tries to use backend.

qtest uses the icount infrastructure to implement a test-driven vm_clock. This
however is not necessary when using -qtest as a "probe" together with a normal
TCG-, KVM- or Xen-based virtual machine. Hence, split out the call to
configure_icount into a new function that is called only for "-machine
accel=qtest"; and disable those commands when running with an accelerator
other than qtest.
This also fixes an assertion failure with "qemu-system-x86_64 -machine
accel=qtest" but no -qtest option. This is a valid case, albeit somewhat
weird; nothing will happen in the VM but you'll still be able to
interact with the monitor or the GUI.
Now that qtest_init is not limited to an int(void) function, change
global variables that are not used outside qtest_init to arguments.
And finally, cleanup useless parts of include/sysemu/qtest.h. The file
is not used at all for user-only emulation, and qtest is not available
on Win32 due to its usage of sigwait.

This patch adds firmware to the machine options. -bios <file> becomes a
shortcut for -machine firmware=<file>. Advantage is that the firmware
can be specified via config file as -machine is parsed using QemuOpts
and it is also possible to use different defaults for different
machine types (via QEMUMachine->default_machine_opts).

After reporting the GUEST_PANICKED monitor event, QEMU stops the VM.
The reason for this is that events are edge-triggered, and can be lost if
management dies at the wrong time. Stopping a panicked VM lets management
know of a panic even if it has crashed; management can learn about the
panic when it restarts and queries running QEMU processes. The downside
is of course that the VM will be paused while management is not running,
but that is acceptable if it only happens with explicit "-device pvpanic".
Upon learning of a panic, management (if configured to do so) can pick a
variety of behaviors: leave the VM paused, reset it, destroy it. In
addition to all of these behaviors, it is possible to dump the VM core
from the host.
However, right now, the panicked state is irreversible, and can only be
exited by resetting the machine. This means that any policy decision
is entirely in the hands of the host. In particular there is no way to
use the "reboot on panic" option together with pvpanic.
This patch makes the panicked state reversible (and removes various
workarounds that were there because of the state being irreversible).
With this change, management has a wider set of possible policies: it
can just log the crash and leave policy to the guest, it can leave the
VM paused. In particular, the "log the crash and continue" is implemented
simply by sending a "cont" as soon as management learns about the panic.
Management could also implement the "irreversible paused state" itself.
And again, all such actions can be coupled with dumping the VM core.
Unfortunately we cannot change the behavior of 1.6.0. Thus, even if
it uses "-device pvpanic", management should check for "cont" failures.
If "cont" fails, management can then log that the VM remained paused
and urge the administrator to update QEMU.

This patch fixes spice display initialization to handle
multihead properly.
spice-core now keeps track of which QemuConsole has a spice
display channel attached to it and which has not. It also
manages display channel ids.
spice-display looks at all QemuConsoles and will pick up any
graphic console not yet bound to a spice channel (which in practice
are all non-qxl graphic devices).
Result is that

Currently, -smbios type=T,NAME=VAL,... adds one field (T,NAME) with
value VAL to fw_cfg for each unique NAME. If NAME occurs multiple
times, the last one's VAL is used (before the QemuOpts conversion, the
first one was used).
Multiple -smbios can add multiple fields with the same (T, NAME).
SeaBIOS reads all of them from fw_cfg, but uses only the first field
(T, NAME). The others are ignored.
"First one wins, subsequent ones get ignored silently" isn't nice. We
commonly let the last option win. Useful, because it lets you
-readconfig first, then selectively override with command line
options.
Clean up -smbios to work the common way. Accumulate the settings,

Currently Xen hvm s3 has a bug coming from the difference between

resume from hvm s3 is via 'xl trigger' command. However, for
qemu-xen, the way to resume from hvm s3 inherited from standard
qemu, i.e. via QMP, and it doesn't work under Xen.
The root cause is, for qemu-xen, 'xl trigger' command didn't reset
devices, while QMP didn't unpause hvm domain though they did qemu
system reset.
We have two qemu patches and one xl patch to fix Xen hvm s3 bug.
This patch is the qemu patch 1. It adjusts qemu wakeup so that
Xen s3 resume logic (which will be implemented at qemu patch 2)

We set default boot order "cad" in every single machine definition
except "pseries" and "moxiesim", even though very few boards actually
care for boot order, and "cad" makes sense for even fewer.
Machines that care:
* pc and its variants
Accept up to three letters 'a', 'b' (undocumented alias for 'a'),
'c', 'd' and 'n'. Reject all others (fatal with -boot).
* nseries (n800, n810)
Check whether order starts with 'n'. Silently ignored otherwise.
* prep, g3beige, mac99
Extract the first character the machine understands (subset of
'a'..'f'). Silently ignored otherwise.
* spapr
Accept an arbitrary string (vl.c restricts it to contain only
'a'..'p', no duplicates).
* sun4[mdc]
Use the first character. Silently ignored otherwise.
Strip characters these machines ignore from their default boot order.
For all other machines, remove the unused default boot order
alltogether.
Note that my rename of QEMUMachine member boot_order to
default_boot_order and QEMUMachineInitArgs member boot_device to
boot_order has a welcome side effect: it makes every use of boot
orders visible in this patch, for easy review.

Convert stderr messages calling error_get_pretty()

Timestamp is prepended by -msg timstamp option with it.
Per Markus's comment below, A conversion from fprintf() to
error_report() is always an improvement, regardless of
error_get_pretty().
http://marc.info/?l=qemu-devel&m=137513283408601&w=2

Spice has two display interface implementations: One integrated into
the qxl graphics card, and one generic which can operate with every
qemu-emulated graphics card.
The generic one is activated in case spice is used without qxl. The
logic for that only caught the "-vga qxl" case, "-device qxl-vga" goes
unnoticed. Fix that by adding a check in the spice interface
registration so we'll notice the qxl card no matter how it is created.

[Issue]
When we offer a customer support service and a problem happens
in a customer's system, we try to understand the problem by
comparing what the customer reports with message logs of the
customer's system.
In this case, we often need to know when the problem happens.
But, currently, there is no timestamp in qemu's error messages.
Therefore, we may not be able to understand the problem based on
error messages.
[Solution]
Add a timestamp to qemu's error message logged by
error_report() with g_time_val_to_iso8601().

Multiple -machine options with the same ID are merged. All but the
one without an ID are to be silently ignored.
In most places, we query these options with a null ID. This is
correct.
In some places, we instead query whatever options come first in the
list. This is wrong. When the -machine processed first happens to
have an ID, options are taken from that ID, and the ones specified
without ID are silently ignored.
Example:

$ upstream-qemu -nodefaults -S -display none -monitor stdio -machine id=foo,accel=kvm,usb=on -machine accel=xen

Option usb is queried correctly, and the one without an ID wins,
regardless of option order.
Option accel is queried incorrectly, and which one wins depends on
option order and ID.
Affected options are accel (and its sugared forms -enable-kvm and
-no-kvm), kernel_irqchip, kvm_shadow_mem.
Additionally, option kernel_irqchip is normally on by default, except
it's off when no -machine options are given. Bug can't bite, because
kernel_irqchip is used only when KVM is enabled, KVM is off by
default, and enabling always creates -machine options. Downstreams
that enable KVM by default do get bitten, though.
Use qemu_get_machine_opts() to fix these bugs.

Option "once" sets up a different boot order just for the initial
boot. Boot order reverts back to normal on reset. Option "order"
changes the normal boot order.
The reversal is implemented by reset handler restore_boot_devices(),
which takes the boot order to revert to as argument.
restore_boot_devices() does nothing on its first call, because that
must be the initial machine reset. On its second call, it changes the
boot order back, and unregisters itself.
Because we register the handler right when -boot gets parsed, we can
revert to an incorrect normal boot order, and multiple -boot can
interact in funny ways.
Here's how things work without -boot once or order:
* boot_devices is "".
* main() passes machine->boot_order to to machine->init(), because
boot_devices is "". machine->init() configures firmware
accordingly. For PC machines, machine->boot_order is "cad", and
pc_cmos_init() writes it to RTC CMOS, where SeaBIOS picks it up.
Now consider -boot order=:
* boot_devices is "".
* -boot order= sets boot_devices to "" (no change).
* main() passes machine->boot_order to to machine->init(), because
boot_devices is "", as above.
Bug: -boot order= has no effect. Broken in commit e4ada29e.
Next, consider -boot once=a:
* boot_devices is "".
* -boot once=a registers restore_boot_devices() with argument "", and
sets boot_devices to "a".
* main() passes boot_devices "a" to machine->init(), which configures
firmware accordingly. For PC machines, pc_cmos_init() writes the
boot order to RTC CMOS.
* main() calls qemu_system_reset(). This runs reset handlers.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "". Does
nothing, because it's the first call.
* Machine boots, boot order is "a".
* Machine resets (e.g. monitor command). Reset handlers run.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "". Calls
qemu_boot_set("") to reconfigure firmware. For PC machines,
pc_boot_set() writes it into RTC CMOS. Reset handler
unregistered.
Bug: boot order reverts to "" instead of machine->boot_order. The
actual boot order depends on how firmware interprets "". Broken
in commit e4ada29e.
Next, consider -boot once=a -boot order=c:
* boot_devices is "".
* -boot once=a registers restore_boot_devices() with argument "", and
sets boot_devices to "a".
* -boot order=c sets boot_devices to "c".
* main() passes boot_devices "c" to machine->init(), which configures
firmware accordingly. For PC machines, pc_cmos_init() writes the
boot order to RTC CMOS.
* main() calls qemu_system_reset(). This runs reset handlers.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "". Does
nothing, because it's the first call.
* Machine boots, boot order is "c".
Bug: it should be "a". I figure this has always been broken.
* Machine resets (e.g. monitor command). Reset handlers run.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "". Calls
qemu_boot_set("") to reconfigure firmware. For PC machines,
pc_boot_set() writes it into RTC CMOS. Reset handler
unregistered.
Bug: boot order reverts to "" instead of "c". I figure this has
always been broken, just differently broken before commit
e4ada29e.
Next, consider -boot once=a -boot once=b -boot once=c:
* boot_devices is "".
* -boot once=a registers restore_boot_devices() with argument "", and
sets boot_devices to "a".
* -boot once=b registers restore_boot_devices() with argument "a", and
sets boot_devices to "b".
* -boot once=c registers restore_boot_devices() with argument "b", and
sets boot_devices to "c".
* main() passes boot_devices "c" to machine->init(), which configures
firmware accordingly. For PC machines, pc_cmos_init() writes the
boot order to RTC CMOS.
* main() calls qemu_system_reset(). This runs reset handlers.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "". Does
nothing, because it's the first call.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "a". Calls
qemu_boot_set("a") to reconfigure firmware. For PC machines,
pc_boot_set() writes it into RTC CMOS. Reset handler
unregistered.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "b". Calls
qemu_boot_set("b") to reconfigure firmware. For PC machines,
pc_boot_set() writes it into RTC CMOS. Reset handler
unregistered.
* Machine boots, boot order is "b".
Bug: should really be "c", because that came last, and for all other
-boot options, the last one wins. I figure this was broken some
time before commit 37905d6a, and fixed there only for a single
occurence of "once".
* Machine resets (e.g. monitor command). Reset handlers run.
- restore_boot_devices() gets called with argument "". Calls
qemu_boot_set("") to reconfigure firmware. For PC machines,
pc_boot_set() writes it into RTC CMOS. Reset handler
unregistered.
Same bug as above: boot order reverts to "" instead of
machine->boot_order.
Fix by acting upon -boot options order, once and menu only after
option parsing is complete, and the machine is known. This is how the
other -boot options work already.

Commit 3d3b8303 threw in some QemuOpts parsing without replacing the
existing ad hoc parser, resulting in a confusing mess. Clean it up.
Two user-visible changes:
1. Invalid options are reported more nicely. Before:
qemu: unknown boot parameter 'x' in 'x=y'
After:
qemu-system-x86_64: -boot x=y: Invalid parameter 'x'
2. If -boot is given multiple times, options accumulate, just like for
-machine. Before, only options order, once and menu accumulated.
For the other ones, all but the first -boot in non-legacy syntax
got simply ignored.

Commit 047d4e151d "Unbreak -no-quit for GTK, validate SDL options" broke
build of qemu without sdl, by referencing `no_frame' variable which is defined
inside #if SDL block. Fix that by defining that variable unconditionally.
This is a better fix for the build issue introduced by that patch than
a revert. This change keeps the new functinality introduced by that patch
and just fixes the compilation. It still is not a complete fix around the
original issue (not working -no-frame et al with -display gtk), because it
makes only the legacy interface working, not the new suboption interface,
so a few more changes are needed.

Certain options (-no-frame, -alt-grab, -ctrl-grab) only make sense with SDL.
When compiling without SDL, these options (and -no-quit) print an error message
and exit qemu.
In case QEMU is compiled with SDL support, the three aforementioned options
still do not make sense with other display types. This patch addresses that
issue by printing a warning. I have chosen not to exit QEMU afterwards because
having the option is not harmful and before this patch it would be ignored
anyway.
By delaying the sanity check from compile-time with some ifdefs to run-time,
-no-quit is now also properly supported when compiling without SDL.

The sole available backend, tpm_passthrough, depends on the data

However, we can at least try to split the user interface (tpm.c) from the

Many of these should be cleaned up with proper qdev-/QOM-ification.

chardev-frontends need to explictly check, increase and decrement the
avail_connections "property" of the chardev when they are not using a
qdev-chardev-property for the chardev.
This fixes things like:
qemu-kvm -chardev stdio,id=foo -device isa-serial,chardev=foo \
-mon chardev=foo
Working, where they should fail. Most of the changes here are due to
old hardware emulation code which is using serial_hds directly rather then
a qdev-chardev-property.

Seabios already added a new device type to halt booting.
Qemu can add "HALT" at the end of bootindex string, then

This option only effects when boot priority is changed by

This patch allows to specify multiple directories where qemu should look
for data files. To implement that the behavior of the -L switch is
slightly different now: Instead of replacing the data directory the
path specified will be appended to the data directory list. So when
specifiying -L multiple times all directories specified will be checked,
in the order they are specified on the command line, instead of just the
last one.
Additionally the default paths are always appended to the directory
data list. This allows to specify a incomplete directory (such as the
seabios out/ directory) via -L. Anything not found there will be loaded
from the default paths, so you don't have to create a symlink farm for
all the rom blobs.
For trouble-shooting a tracepoint has been added, logging which blob
has been loaded from which location.

This patch adds support for cancelling an executing TPM command.
In Linux for example a user can cancel a command through the TPM's
sysfs 'cancel' entry using
echo "1" > /sysfs/class/misc/tpm0/device/cancel
This patch propagates the cancellation of a command inside a VM
to the host TPM's sysfs entry.
It also uses the possibility to cancel the command before QEMU VM
shutdown or reboot, which helps in preventing QEMU from hanging while
waiting for the completion of the command.
To relieve higher layers or users from having to determine the TPM's
cancel sysfs entry, the driver searches for the entry in well known
locations.

This patch adds support for TPM command line options.
The command line options supported here are
./qemu-... -tpmdev passthrough,path=<path to TPM device>,id=<id>
-device tpm-tis,tpmdev=<id>,id=<other id>
and
./qemu-... -tpmdev help
where the latter works similar to -soundhw help and shows a list of
available TPM backends (for example 'passthrough').
Using the type parameter, the backend is chosen, i.e., 'passthrough' for the
passthrough driver. The interpretation of the other parameters along
with determining whether enough parameters were provided is pushed into
the backend driver, which needs to implement the interface function
'create' and return a TPMDriverOpts structure if the VM can be started or
'NULL' if not enough or bad parameters were provided.
Monitor support for 'info tpm' has been added. It for example prints the
following:
(qemu) info tpm
TPM devices:
tpm0: model=tpm-tis
\ tpm0: type=passthrough,path=/dev/tpm0,cancel-path=/sys/devices/pnp0/00:09/cancel

qdev_free and qbus_free have to do unparent+unref, because nobody else
drops the initial reference (the one included by object_initialize)
before them.
For device_init_func and do_device_add, this is trivially correct,
since the DeviceState goes out of scope.
For qdev_create, qdev_try_create and qbus_init, it is a bit more tricky.
What we are doing here is just assuming that the caller knows what it's
doing, and won't call qdev_free/qbus_free while the device is still there.
This is a pretty reasonable assumption and (behind the scenes) is also
what GObject/GTK does. GTK actually has a "floating reference" that
goes away as soon as the caller does gtk_container_add or something
like that, but in the end qbus_init and qdev_try_create are already
adding the new object to its qdev parent! So in the end the two solutions
are the same.

Happens to work on my x86_64 box (64 bit little endian): the least

Curses display requires stdin/out to stay on the terminal,
so -daemonize makes no sense in this case. Instead of
leaving display uninitialized like is done since 995ee2bf46,
explicitly detect this case earlier and error out.
-nographic can actually be used with -daemonize, by redirecting
everything to a null device, but the problem is that according
to documentation and historical behavour, -nographic redirects
guest ports to stdin/out, which, again, makes no sense in case
of -daemonize. Since -nographic is a legacy option, don't bother
fixing this case (to allow -nographic and -daemonize by redirecting
guest ports to null instead of stdin/out in this case), but disallow
it completely instead, to stop garbling host terminal.
If no display display needed and user wants to use -nographic,
the right way to go is to use
-serial null -parallel null -monitor none -display none -vga none
instead of -nographic.
Also prevent the same issue -- it was possible to get garbled
host tty after
-nographic -daemonize
and it is still possible to have it by using
-serial stdio -daemonize
Fix this by disallowing opening stdio chardev when -daemonize
is specified.

There are QEMUMachines that have neither IF_IDE nor IF_SCSI as a
default/standard interface to their block devices / drives. Therefore,
this patch introduces a new field default_block_type per QEMUMachine
struct. The prior use_scsi field becomes thereby obsolete and is
replaced through .default_block_type = IF_SCSI.
This patch also changes the default for s390x to IF_VIRTIO and
removes an early hack that converts IF_IDE drives.
Other parties have already claimed interest (e.g. IF_SD for exynos)
To create a sane default, for machines that dont specify a
default_block_type, this patch makes IF_IDE = 0 and IF_NONE = 1.
I checked all users of IF_NONE (blockdev.c and ww/device-hotplug.c)
as well as IF_IDE and it seems that it is ok to change the defines -
in other words, I found no obvious (to me) assumption in the code
regarding IF_NONE==0. IF_NONE is only set if there is an
explicit if=none. Without if=* the interface becomes IF_DEFAULT.
I would suggest to have some additional care, e.g. by letting
this patch sit some days in the block tree.

Commit ac4119c (chardev: Use timer instead of bottom-half to postpone
open event, 2012-10-12) moved the alarm timer initialization to an earlier
point but failed to consider that it depends on qemu_init_main_loop.
Later, commit 1c53786 (vl: init main loop earlier, 2012-10-30) fixed
this, but left -daemonize in two different ways. First, timers need to
be reinitialized after forking. Second, the global mutex was being held
by the parent, and thus dropped after forking.
The first is now fixed using pthread_atfork. For the second part,
make sure that the global mutex is not taken before daemonization,
and similarly delay qemu_thread_self.

Add flags to displaystate indicating whenever text mode display

Also change the way the gui_timer is initialized: each time a
displaychangelistener is registered or unregistered we'll check
whether we need a timer (due to dpy_refresh callback being present)

works correctly with displaychangelisteners coming and going.

This option can be used for passing file descriptors on the
command line. It mirrors the existing add-fd QMP command which
allows an fd to be passed to QEMU via SCM_RIGHTS and added to an
fd set.
This can be combined with commands such as -drive to link file
descriptors in an fd set to a drive:
qemu-kvm -add-fd fd=3,set=2,opaque="rdwr:/path/to/file"
-add-fd fd=4,set=2,opaque="rdonly:/path/to/file"
-drive file=/dev/fdset/2,index=0,media=disk
This example adds dups of fds 3 and 4, and the accompanying opaque
strings to the fd set with ID=2. qemu_open() already knows how
to handle a filename of this format. qemu_open() searches the
corresponding fd set for an fd and when it finds a match, QEMU
goes on to use a dup of that fd just like it would have used an
fd that it opened itself.

- More easily add or remove machine initialization arguments without
having to change every single machine init function;
- More easily make mechanical changes involving the machine init
functions in the future;
- Let machine initialization forward the init arguments to other
functions more easily.
This change was half-mechanical process: first the struct was added with
the local ram_size, boot_device, kernel_*, initrd_*, and cpu_model local
variable initialization to all functions. Then the compiler helped me
locate the local variables that are unused, so they could be removed.

Added an option to let qemu transfer a configuration file to bios,
"etc/boot-fail-wait", which could be specified by command
-boot reboot-timeout=T
T have a max value of 0xffff, unit is ms.
With this option, guest will wait for a given time if not find
bootabled device, then reboot. If reboot-timeout is '-1', guest
will not reboot, qemu passes '-1' to bios by default.
This feature need the new seabios's support.
Seabios pulls the value from the fwcfg "file" interface, this
interface is used because SeaBIOS needs a reliable way of
obtaining a name, value size, and value. It in no way requires
that there be a real file on the user's host machine.

Current qemu initializes curses even if -daemonize option is
passed. This cause problem because shell prompt appears without
calling endwin().
This patch adds new function, is_daemonized(), to OS dependent
code. With this function, curses_display_init() can check that qemu is
daemonized or not. If daemonized, curses_display_init() isn't called
and the problem is avoided.
Of course, -daemonize && -curses doesn't make sense. Users shouldn't
pass the arguments at the same time. But the problem is very painful
because Ctrl-C cannot be delivered to the terminal.

This patch provides a way to optionally suppress spurious interrupts,
as a workaround for systems described below:
Some old operating systems do not handle spurious interrupts well,
and qemu tends to generate them significantly more often than
real hardware.

sporadically when accessing the hard disk.)

This patch adds some optional compatibility hacks (default
disabled) to allow Microport UNIX to function under qemu.
I've tried to structure it to be easy to add more hacks for other
old CGA programs, if anyone ever needs them.
Microport UNIX System V/386 v 2.1 (ca 1987) tries to program
the CGA registers directly with neither the assistance of BIOS, nor
with proper handling of EGA/VGA-only registers. Note that it didn't
work on real VGA hardware, either (although in that case, the most
obvious problems seemed to be out-of-range hsync and/or vsync
signalling, rather than the issues in this patch).
Eventually real MDA and/or CGA support might provide an alternative to
this patch, although a hybrid approach like this patch might still
be useful in marginal cases.

qemu_system_reset() function always performs the same basic actions on
all machines. This includes running all the reset handler hooks,
however the order in which these will run is not always easily predictable.
This patch splits the core of qemu_system_reset() - the invocation of
the reset handlers - out into a new qemu_devices_reset() function.
qemu_system_reset() will usually call qemu_devices_reset(), but that
can be now overriden by a new reset method in the QEMUMachine
structure.
Individual machines can use this reset method, if necessary, to
perform any extra, machine specific initializations which have to
occur before or after the bulk of the reset handlers. It's expected
that the method will call qemu_devices_reset() at some point, but if
the machine has really strange ordering requirements between devices
resets it could even override that with it's own reset sequence (with
great care, obviously).
For a specific example of when this might be needed: a number of
machines (but not PC) load images specified with -kernel or -initrd
directly into the machine RAM before booting the guest. This mostly
works at the moment, but to make this actually safe requires that this
load occurs after peripheral devices are reset - otherwise they could
have active DMAs in progress which would clobber the in memory images.
Some machines (notably pseries) also have other entry conditions which
need to be set up as the last thing before executing in guest space -
some of this could be considered "emulated firmware" in the sense that
the actions of the firmware are emulated directly by qemu rather than
by executing a firmware image within the guest. When the platform's
firmware to OS interface is sufficiently well specified, this saves
time both in implementing the "firmware" and executing it.

Today, the WAKEUP event is emitted when a wakeup _request_ is made.
This could be the system_wakeup command, for example.
A better semantic would be to emit the event when the guest is
already running, as that's what matters in the end. This commit does
that change.
In theory, this could break compatibility. In practice, it shouldn't
happen though, as clients shouldn't rely on timing characteristics of
the events. That is, a client relying that the guest is not running
when the event arrives may break if the event arrives after the guest
is already running.
This commit also adds the missing documentation for the WAKEUP event.

This patch updates the iscsi layer to automatically pick a 'unique'
initiator-name based on the name of the vm in case the user has not set
an explicit iqn-name to use.
Create a new function qemu_get_vm_name() that returns the name of the VM,
if specified.
This way we can thus create default names to use as the initiator name
based on the guest session.
If the VM is not named via the '-name' command line argument, the iscsi
initiator-name used wiull simply be
iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm
If a name for the VM was specified with the '-name' option, iscsi will
use a default initiatorname of
iqn.2008-11.org.linux-kvm:<name>
These names are just the default iscsi initiator name that qemu will
generate/use only when the user has not set an explicit initiator name
via the commandlines or config files.

FIPS 140-2 requires disabling certain ciphers, including DES, which is used
by VNC to obscure passwords when they are sent over the network. The
solution for FIPS users is to disable the use of VNC password auth when the
host system is operating in FIPS compliance mode and the user has specified
'-enable-fips' on the QEMU command line.
This patch causes QEMU to emit a message to stderr when the host system is

VNC password authentication was not requested, QEMU operates normally.
