4bff28b81a block: Add errp to BD.bdrv_truncate()
Add an Error parameter to the block drivers' bdrv_truncate() interface.
If a block driver does not set this in case of an error, the generic
bdrv_truncate() implementation will do so.

Where it is obvious, this patch also makes some block drivers set this
value.

5fe31c25cc block: Fix error handling in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain()
When adding an Error parameter, bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() would
become nothing more than a wrapper around change_parent_backing_link().
So make the latter public, renamed as bdrv_replace_node(), and remove
bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain().

Most of the callers just remove a node from the graph that they just
inserted, so they can use &error_abort, but completion of a mirror job

0db832f42e commit: Add filter-node-name to block-commit
Management tools need to be able to know about every node in the graph
and need a way to address them. Changing the graph structure was okay
because libvirt doesn't really manage the node level yet, but future
libvirt versions need to deal with both new and old version of qemu.

This new option to blockdev-commit allows the client to set a node-name
for the automatically inserted filter driver, and at the same time
serves as a witness for a future libvirt that this version of qemu does
automatically insert a filter driver.

db95dbba3b block: BdrvChildRole.attach/detach() callbacks
Backing files are somewhat special compared to other kinds of children
because they are attached and detached using bdrv_set_backing_hd()
rather than the normal set of functions, which does a few more things
like setting backing blockers, toggling the BDRV_O_NO_BACKING flag,
setting parent_bs->backing_file, etc.

These special features are a reason why change_parent_backing_link()
can't handle backing files yet. With abstracting the additional features
into .attach/.detach callbacks, we get a step closer to a function that
can actually deal with this.

6b1a044afb block: Default .bdrv_child_perm() for format drivers
Almost all format drivers have the same characteristics as far as
permissions are concerned: They have one or more children for storing
their own data and, more importantly, metadata (can be written to and
grow even without external write requests, must be protected against
other writers and present consistent data) and optionally a backing file
(this is just data, so like for a filter, it only depends on what the
parent nodes need).

This provides a default implementation that can be shared by most of
our format drivers.

33a610c398 block: Involve block drivers in permission granting
In many cases, the required permissions of one node on its children
depend on what its parents require from it. For example, the raw format
or most filter drivers only need to request consistent reads if that's
something that one of their parents wants.

In order to achieve this, this patch introduces two new BlockDriver
callbacks. The first one lets drivers first check (recursively) whether
the requested permissions can be set; the second one actually sets the
new permission bitmask.

Also add helper functions that drivers can use in their implementation
of the callbacks to update their permissions on a specific child.

d5e6f437c5 block: Let callers request permissions when attaching a child node
When attaching a node as a child to a new parent, the required and
shared permissions for this parent are checked against all other parents
of the node now, and an error is returned if there is a conflict.

This allows error returns to a function that previously always
succeeded, and the same is true for quite a few callers and their
callers. Converting all of them within the same patch would be too much,
so for now everyone tells that they don't need any permissions and allow
everyone else to do anything. This way we can use &error_abort initially
and convert caller by caller to pass actual permission requirements and
implement error handling.

All these places are marked with FIXME comments and it will be the job
of the next patches to clean them up again.

111049a4ec blockjob: refactor backup_start as backup_job_create
Refactor backup_start as backup_job_create, which only creates the job,
but does not automatically start it. The old interface, 'backup_start',
is not kept in favor of limiting the number of nearly-identical interfaces
that would have to be edited to keep up with QAPI changes in the future.

Callers that wish to synchronously start the backup_block_job can
instead just call block_job_start immediately after calling
backup_job_create.

Transactions are updated to use the new interface, calling block_job_start
only during the .commit phase, which helps prevent race conditions where
jobs may finish before we even finish building the transaction. This may
happen, for instance, during empty block backup jobs.

c9d1a56174 block: only call aio_poll on the current thread's AioContext
aio_poll is not thread safe; for example bdrv_drain can hang if
the last in-flight I/O operation is completed in the I/O thread after

The bug remains latent as long as all of it is called within
aio_context_acquire/aio_context_release, but this will change soon.

To fix this, if bdrv_drain is called from outside the I/O thread,
signal the main AioContext through a dummy bottom half. The event
loop then only runs in the I/O thread.

13b9414b57 drive-backup: added support for data compression
The idea is simple - backup is "written-once" data. It is written block
by block and it is large enough. It would be nice to save storage
space and compress it.

The patch adds a flag to the qmp/hmp drive-backup command which enables
block compression. Compression should be implemented in the format driver
to enable this feature.

There are some limitations of the format driver to allow compressed writes.
We can write data only once. Though for backup this is perfectly fine.
These limitations are maintained by the driver and the error will be
reported if we are doing something wrong.

block: ignore flush requests when storage is clean
has introduced a regression.

There is a problem that it is still possible for 2 requests to execute
in non sequential fashion and sometimes this results in a deadlock
when bdrv_drain_one/all are called for BDS with such stalled requests.

1. Current flushed_gen and flush_started_gen is 1.
2. Request 1 enters bdrv_co_flush to with write_gen 1 (i.e. the same
   as flushed_gen). It gets past flushed_gen != flush_started_gen and
sets flush_started_gen to 1 (again, the same it was before).
3. Request 1 yields somewhere before exiting bdrv_co_flush
4. Request 2 enters bdrv_co_flush with write_gen 2. It gets past
   flushed_gen != flush_started_gen and sets flush_started_gen to 2.
5. Request 2 runs to completion and sets flushed_gen to 2
6. Request 1 is resumed, runs to completion and sets flushed_gen to 1.
   However flush_started_gen is now 2.

From here on out flushed_gen is always != to flush_started_gen and all
further requests will wait on flush_queue. This change replaces
flush_started_gen with an explicitly tracked active flush request.

which says that both the maximum and the optimal discard size
is 15M. It is not immediately apparent if the device allows
discard requests not aligned to the optimal size, nor if it
allows discards at a finer granularity than the optimal size.

I tried to find details in the SCSI Commands Reference Manual
Rev. A on what valid values of maximum and optimal sizes are
permitted, but while that document mentions a "Block Limits
VPD Page", I couldn't actually find documentation of that page
or what values it would have, or if a SCSI device has an
advertisement of its minimal unmap granularity. So it is not
obvious to me whether the Dell Equallogic device is compliance
with the SCSI specification.

Fortunately, it is easy enough to support non-power-of-2 sizing,
even if it means we are less efficient than truly possible when
targetting that device (for example, it means that we refuse to
unmap anything that is not a multiple of 15M and aligned to a
15M boundary, even if the device truly does support a smaller
granularity where unmapping actually works).

3ff2f67a7c block: ignore flush requests when storage is clean
Some guests (win2008 server for example) do a lot of unnecessary
flushing when underlying media has not changed. This adds additional
overhead on host when calling fsync/fdatasync.

This change introduces a write generation scheme in BlockDriverState.
Current write generation is checked against last flushed generation to
avoid unnessesary flushes.

The problem with excessive flushing was found by a performance test
which does parallel directory tree creation (from 2 processes).
Results improved from 0.424 loops/sec to 0.432 loops/sec.
Each loop creates 10^3 directories with 10 files in each.

This affected some blkdebug testcases that were expecting error logs from
failure-injected flushes which are now skipped entirely
(tests 026 071 089).

This also affects the performance of block jobs and thus BLOCK_JOB_READY
events for driver-mirror and active block-commit commands now arrives
faster, before QMP send successfully returns to caller (tests 141 144).

a03ef88f77 block: Convert bdrv_co_preadv/pwritev to BdrvChild
This is the final patch for converting the common I/O path to take
a BdrvChild parameter instead of BlockDriverState.

The completion of this conversion means that all users that perform I/O
on an image need to actually hold a reference (in the form of BdrvChild,
possible as part of a BlockBackend) to that image. This also protects
against inconsistent use of BlockBackend vs. BlockDriverState functions
because direct use of a BlockDriverState isn't possible any more and
blk->root is private for block-backends.c.

In addition, we can now distinguish different users in the I/O path,
and the future op blockers work is going to add assertions based on
permissions stored in BdrvChild.

b9f7855a50 block: Switch discard length bounds to byte-based
Sector-based limits are awkward to think about; in our on-going
quest to move to byte-based interfaces, convert max_discard and
discard_alignment. Rename them, using 'pdiscard' as an aid to
track which remaining discard interfaces need conversion, and so
that the compiler will help us catch the change in semantics
across any rebased code. The BlockLimits type is now completely
byte-based; and in iscsi.c, sector_limits_lun2qemu() is no
longer needed.

pdiscard_alignment is made unsigned (we use power-of-2 alignments
as bitmasks, where unsigned is easier to think about) while
leaving max_pdiscard signed (since we still have an 'int'
interface); this is comparable to what commit cf081fc did for
write zeroes limits. We may later want to make everything an
unsigned 64-bit limit - but that requires a bigger code audit.

e8a095dadb block: use safe iteration over AioContext notifiers
It's possible that an AioContext notifier user was close to finishing
when .detach_aio_context() or .attached_aio_context() is called. In
that case they may call bdrv_remove_aio_context_notifier() during the
callback.

Use safe iteration to avoid crashing when the notifier list is modified
during iteration. We must not only handle the case where the current
aio notifier is removed during a callback but also the one where any
other aio notifier is removed.

The next patch adds an AioContext notifier for block jobs and they

274fccee2b block/mirror: Fix target backing BDS
Currently, we are trying to move the backing BDS from the source to the
target in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() which is called from
mirror_exit(). However, mirror_complete() already tries to open the
target's backing chain with a call to bdrv_open_backing_file().

First, we should only set the target's backing BDS once. Second, the
mirroring block job has a better idea of what to set it to than the
generic code in bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() (in fact, the latter's
conditions on when to move the backing BDS from source to target are not
really correct).

Therefore, remove that code from bdrv_replace_in_backing_chain() and
leave it to mirror_complete().

Depending on what kind of mirroring is performed, we furthermore want to
use different strategies to open the target's backing chain:

- If blockdev-mirror is used, we can assume the user made sure that the
target already has the correct backing chain. In particular, we should
not try to open a backing file if the target does not have any yet.

- If drive-mirror with mode=absolute-paths is used, we can and should
reuse the already existing chain of nodes that the source BDS is in.
In case of sync=full, no backing BDS is required; with sync=top, we
just link the source's backing BDS to the target, and with sync=none,
we use the source BDS as the target's backing BDS.
We should not try to open these backing files anew because this would
lead to two BDSs existing per physical file in the backing chain, and
we would like to avoid such concurrent access.

- If drive-mirror with mode=existing is used, we have to use the
information provided in the physical image file which means opening
the target's backing chain completely anew, just as it has been done
  already.
If the target's backing chain shares images with the source, this may
lead to multiple BDSs per physical image file. But since we cannot
reliably ascertain this case, there is nothing we can do about it.

cf081fca4e block: Track write zero limits in bytes
Another step towards removing sector-based interfaces: convert
the maximum write and minimum alignment values from sectors to
bytes. Rename the variables to let the compiler check that all
users are converted to the new semantics.

The maximum remains an int as long as BDRV_REQUEST_MAX_SECTORS
is constrained by INT_MAX (this means that we can't even
support a 2G write_zeroes, but just under it) - changing
operation lengths to unsigned or to 64-bits is a much bigger
audit, and debatable if we even want to do it (since at the
core, a 32-bit platform will still have ssize_t as its
underlying limit on write()).

Meanwhile, alignment is changed to 'uint32_t', since it makes no
sense to have an alignment larger than the maximum write, and
less painful to use an unsigned type with well-defined behavior
in bit operations than to have to worry about what happens if
a driver mistakenly supplies a negative alignment.

Add an assert that no one was trying to use sectors to get a
write zeroes larger than 2G, and therefore that a later conversion
to bytes won't be impacted by keeping the limit at 32 bits.

bdrv_root_attach_child() takes now an opaque parameter, which is needed

465fe887cc block: Honor BDRV_REQ_FUA during write_zeroes
The block layer has a couple of cases where it can lose
Force Unit Access semantics when writing a large block of
zeroes, such that the request returns before the zeroes
have been guaranteed to land on underlying media.

SCSI does not support FUA during WRITESAME(10/16); FUA is only
supported if it falls back to WRITE(10/16). But where the
underlying device is new enough to not need a fallback, it
means that any upper layer request with FUA semantics was
silently ignoring BDRV_REQ_FUA.

Conversely, NBD has situations where it can support FUA but not
ZERO_WRITE; when that happens, the generic block layer fallback
to bdrv_driver_pwritev() (or the older bdrv_co_writev() in qemu
2.6) was losing the FUA flag.

The problem of losing flags unrelated to ZERO_WRITE has been
latent in bdrv_co_do_write_zeroes() since commit aa7bfbff, but
back then, it did not matter because there was no FUA flag. It
became observable when commit 93f5e6d8 paved the way for flags
that can impact correctness, when we should have been using
bdrv_co_writev_flags() with modified flags. Compare to commit
9eeb6dd, which got flag manipulation right in
bdrv_co_do_zero_pwritev().

Symptoms: I tested with qemu-io with default writethrough cache
(which is supposed to use FUA semantics on every write), and
targetted an NBD client connected to a server that intentionally
did not advertise NBD_FLAG_SEND_FUA. When doing 'write 0 512',
the NBD client sent two operations (NBD_CMD_WRITE then
NBD_CMD_FLUSH) to get the fallback FUA semantics; but when doing
'write -z 0 512', the NBD client sent only NBD_CMD_WRITE.

The fix is do to a cleanup bdrv_co_flush() at the end of the
operation if any step in the middle relied on a BDS that does
not natively support FUA for that step (note that we don't
need to flush after every operation, if the operation is broken
into chunks based on bounce-buffer sizing). Each BDS gains a
new flag .supported_zero_flags, which parallels the use of
.supported_write_flags but only when accessing a zero write
operation (the flags MUST be different, because of SCSI having
different semantics based on WRITE vs. WRITESAME; and also
because BDRV_REQ_MAY_UNMAP only makes sense on zero writes).

Also fix some documentation to describe -ENOTSUP semantics,
particularly since iscsi depends on those semantics.

Down the road, we may want to add a driver where its
.bdrv_co_pwritev() honors all three of BDRV_REQ_FUA,
BDRV_REQ_ZERO_WRITE, and BDRV_REQ_MAY_UNMAP, and advertise
this via bs->supported_write_flags for blocks opened by that
driver; such a driver should NOT supply .bdrv_co_write_zeroes
nor .supported_zero_flags. But none of the drivers touched
in this patch want to do that (the act of writing zeroes is
different enough from normal writes to deserve a second
callback).

4df863f336 block: Make supported_write_flags a per-bds property
Pre-patch, .supported_write_flags lives at the driver level, which
means we are blindly declaring that all block devices using a
given driver will either equally support FUA, or that we need a
fallback at the block layer. But there are drivers where FUA
support is a per-block decision: the NBD block driver is dependent
on the remote server advertising NBD_FLAG_SEND_FUA (and has
fallback code to duplicate the flush that the block layer would do
if NBD had not set .supported_write_flags); and the iscsi block
driver is dependent on the mode sense bits advertised by the
underlying device (and is currently silently ignoring FUA requests
if the underlying device does not support FUA).

The fix is to make supported flags as a per-BDS option, set during
.bdrv_open(). This patch moves the variable and fixes NBD and iscsi
to set it only conditionally; later patches will then further
simplify the NBD driver to quit duplicating work done at the block
layer, as well as tackle the fact that SCSI does not support FUA
semantics on WRITESAME(10/16) but only on WRITE(10/16).

abb21ac3e6 hmp: 'drive_add -n' for creating a node without BB
This patch adds an option to the drive_add HMP command to create only a
BlockDriverState without a BlockBackend on top.

The motivation for this is that libvirt needs to specify options to a
migration target (specifically, detect-zeroes). drive-mirror doesn't
allow specifying options, and the proper way to do this is to create the
target BDS separately with blockdev-add (where you can specify options)
and then use blockdev-mirror to that BDS.

However, libvirt can't use blockdev-add as long as it is still
experimental, and we're expecting that it will still take some time, so
we need to resort to drive_add.

The problem with drive_add is that so far it always created a BB, and
BDSes with a BB can't be used as a mirroring target as long as we don't
support multiple BBs per BDS - and while we're working towards that
goal, it's another thing that will still take some time.

So to achieve the goal, the simplest solution to provide the
functionality now without adding one-off options to the mirror QMP
commands is to extend drive_add to create nodes without BBs.

76b1c7fe1c block: Inactivate BDS when migration completes
So far, live migration with shared storage meant that the image is in a
not-really-ready don't-touch-me state on the destination while the
source is still actively using it, but after completing the migration,
the image was fully opened on both sides. This is bad.

This patch adds a block driver callback to inactivate images on the
source before completing the migration. Inactivation means that it goes
to a state as if it was just live migrated to the qemu instance on the
source (i.e. BDRV_O_INACTIVE is set). You're then supposed to continue
either on the source or on the destination, which takes ownership of the
image.

A typical migration looks like this now with respect to disk images:

1. Destination qemu is started, the image is opened with
BDRV_O_INACTIVE. The image is fully opened on the source.

2. Migration is about to complete. The source flushes the image and
inactivates it. Now both sides have the image opened with
BDRV_O_INACTIVE and are expecting the other side to still modify it.

3. One side (the destination on success) continues and calls
bdrv_invalidate_all() in order to take ownership of the image again.
This removes BDRV_O_INACTIVE on the resuming side; the flag remains
   set on the other side.

This ensures that the same image isn't written to by both instances
(unless both are resumed, but then you get what you deserve). This is
important because .bdrv_close for non-BDRV_O_INACTIVE images could write
to the image file, which is definitely forbidden while another host is
using the image.

need_check_timer in QED. Since we want quiesced periods that contain
nested event loops in block layer, we need to have a way to disable such
event sources.

Block drivers must implement the "bdrv_drain" callback if it has any
internal sources that can generate I/O activity, like a timer or a
worker thread (even in a library) that can schedule QEMUBH in an
asynchronous callback.

Update the comments of bdrv_drain and bdrv_drained_begin accordingly.

Like bdrv_requests_pending(), we should consider all the children of bs.
Before, the while loop just works, as bdrv_requests_pending() already
tracks its children; now we mustn't miss the callback, so recurse down
explicitly.

a0d64a61db throttle: Use bs->throttle_state instead of bs->io_limits_enabled
There are two ways to check for I/O limits in a BlockDriverState:

- bs->throttle_state: if this pointer is not NULL, it means that this
BDS is member of a throttling group, its ThrottleTimers structure
has been initialized and its I/O limits are ready to be applied.

- bs->io_limits_enabled: if true it means that the throttle_state
pointer is valid _and_ the limits are currently enabled.

The latter is used in several places to check whether a BDS has I/O
limits configured, but what it really checks is whether requests
are being throttled or not. For example, io_limits_enabled can be
temporarily set to false in cases like bdrv_read_unthrottled() without
otherwise touching the throtting configuration of that BDS.

This patch replaces bs->io_limits_enabled with bs->throttle_state in
all cases where what we really want to check is the existence of I/O
limits, not whether they are currently enabled or not.

53d8f9d8fb block: Remove wr_highest_sector from BlockAcctStats
BlockAcctStats contains statistics about the data transferred from and
to the device; wr_highest_sector does not fit in with the rest.

Furthermore, those statistics are supposed to be specific for a certain
device and not necessarily for a BDS (see the comment above
bdrv_get_stats()); on the other hand, wr_highest_sector may be a rather
important information to know for each BDS. When BlockAcctStats is
finally removed from the BDS, we will want to keep wr_highest_sector in
the BDS.

Finally, wr_highest_sector is renamed to wr_highest_offset and given the
appropriate meaning. Externally, it is represented as an offset so there
is no point in doing something different internally. Its definition is
changed to match that in qapi/block-core.json which is "the offset after
the greatest byte written to". Doing so should not cause any harm since
if external programs tried to calculate the volume usage by
(wr_highest_offset + 512) / volume_size, after this patch they will just
assume the volume to be full slightly earlier than before.

This allows iterating over all children of a given BDS, not only
including bs->file and bs->backing_hd, but also driver-specific

For bdrv_swap(), the list of children of the swapped BDS stays at that
BDS (because that's where the pointers stay as well). The list head
moves and pointers to it must be fixed up therefore.

The list of children in the parent of the swapped BDS is not affected by
the swap. The contents of the BDS objects is swapped, so the existing
pointer in the parent automatically points to the newly swapped in BDS.

This patch enables users to handle VDI object size.

When you start qemu, you don't need to specify additional command option.

But when you create the VDI which doesn't have default object size
with qemu-img command, you specify object_size option.

If you want to create a VDI of 8MB object size,
you need to specify following command option.

 # qemu-img create -o object_size=8M sheepdog:test1 100M

In addition, when you don't specify qemu-img command option,

e2462113b2 block: add event when disk usage exceeds threshold
Managing applications, like oVirt (http://www.ovirt.org), make extensive
use of thin-provisioned disk images.
To let the guest run smoothly and be not unnecessarily paused, oVirt sets
a disk usage threshold (so called 'high water mark') based on the occupation
of the device, and automatically extends the image once the threshold
is reached or exceeded.

In order to detect the crossing of the threshold, oVirt has no choice but
aggressively polling the QEMU monitor using the query-blockstats command.
This lead to unnecessary system load, and is made even worse under scale:
deployments with hundreds of VMs are no longer rare.

To fix this, this patch adds:
* A new monitor command `block-set-write-threshold', to set a mark for
  a given block device.
* A new event `BLOCK_WRITE_THRESHOLD', to report if a block device
  usage exceeds the threshold.
* A new `write_threshold' field into the `BlockDeviceInfo' structure,
  to report the configured threshold.

This will allow the managing application to use smarter and more
efficient monitoring, greatly reducing the need of polling.

9a29e18f7d block: update string sizes for filename,backing_file,exact_filename
The string field entries 'filename', 'backing_file', and
'exact_filename' in the BlockDriverState struct are defined as 1024

However, many places that use these values accept a maximum of PATH_MAX
bytes, so we have a mixture of 1024 byte and PATH_MAX byte allocations.
This patch makes the BlockDriverStruct field string sizes match usage.

This patch also does a few fixes related to the size that needs to
happen now:

    * the block qapi driver is updated to use PATH_MAX bytes
    * the qcow and qcow2 drivers have an additional safety check
    * the block vvfat driver is updated to use PATH_MAX bytes
for the size of backing_file, for systems where PATH_MAX is < 1024
      bytes.
    * qemu-img uses PATH_MAX rather than 1024. These instances were not
changed to be dynamically allocated, however, as the extra
temporary 3K in stack usage for qemu-img does not seem worrisome.

38f3ef574b raw: Prohibit dangerous writes for probed images
If the user neglects to specify the image format, QEMU probes the
image to guess it automatically, for convenience.

Relying on format probing is insecure for raw images (CVE-2008-2004).
If the guest writes a suitable header to the device, the next probe
will recognize a format chosen by the guest. A malicious guest can
abuse this to gain access to host files, e.g. by crafting a QCOW2
header with backing file /etc/shadow.

Commit 1e72d3b (April 2008) provided -drive parameter format to let
users disable probing. Commit f965509 (March 2009) extended QCOW2 to
optionally store the backing file format, to let users disable backing
file probing. QED has had a flag to suppress probing since the
beginning (2010), set whenever a raw backing file is assigned.

All of these additions that allow to avoid format probing have to be
specified explicitly. The default still allows the attack.

In order to fix this, commit 79368c8 (July 2010) put probed raw images
in a restricted mode, in which they wouldn't be able to overwrite the
first few bytes of the image so that they would identify as a different
image. If a write to the first sector would write one of the signatures
of another driver, qemu would instead zero out the first four bytes.
This patch was later reverted in commit 8b33d9e (September 2010) because
it didn't get the handling of unaligned qiov members right.

Today's block layer that is based on coroutines and has qiov utility
functions makes it much easier to get this functionality right, so this
patch implements it.

The other differences of this patch to the old one are that it doesn't
silently write something different than the guest requested by zeroing
out some bytes (it fails the request instead) and that it doesn't
maintain a list of signatures in the raw driver (it calls the usual
probe function instead).

Note that this change doesn't introduce new breakage for false positive
cases where the guest legitimately writes data into the first sector
that matches the signatures of an image format (e.g. for nested virt):
These cases were broken before, only the failure mode changes from
corruption after the next restart (when the wrong format is probed) to
failing the problematic write request.

Also note that like in the original patch, the restrictions only apply
if the image format has been guessed by probing. Explicitly specifying a
format allows guests to write anything they like.

If a filename exists or a block driver is able to reconstruct a valid

54e2690090 block: extend block-commit to accept a string for the backing file
On some image chains, QEMU may not always be able to resolve the
filenames properly, when updating the backing file of an image
after a block commit.

For instance, certain relative pathnames may fail, or drives may
have been specified originally by file descriptor (e.g. /dev/fd/???),
or a relative protocol pathname may have been used.

In these instances, QEMU may lack the information to be able to make
the correct choice, but the user or management layer most likely does
have that knowledge.

With this extension to the block-commit api, the user is able to change
the backing file of the overlay image as part of the block-commit
operation.

This allows the change to be 'safe', in the sense that if the attempt
to write the overlay image metadata fails, then the block-commit
operation returns failure, without disrupting the guest.

If the commit top is the active layer, then specifying the backing
file string will be treated as an error (there is no overlay image
to modify in that case).

If a backing file string is not specified in the command, the backing
file string to use is determined in the same manner as it was
previously.

4ab1559085 qemu-img create: add 'nocow' option
Add 'nocow' option so that users could have a chance to set NOCOW flag to
newly created files. It's useful on btrfs file system to enhance performance.

Btrfs has low performance when hosting VM images, even more when the guest
in those VM are also using btrfs as file system. One way to mitigate this bad
performance is to turn off COW attributes on VM files. Generally, there are
two ways to turn off NOCOW on btrfs: a) by mounting fs with nodatacow, then
all newly created files will be NOCOW. b) per file. Add the NOCOW file
attribute. It could only be done to empty or new files.

This patch tries the second way, according to the option, it could add NOCOW
per file.

For most block drivers, since the create file step is in raw-posix.c, so we
can do setting NOCOW flag ioctl in raw-posix.c only.

But there are some exceptions, like block/vpc.c and block/vdi.c, they are
creating file by calling qemu_open directly. For them, do the same setting
NOCOW flag ioctl work in them separately.

dcd042282d block: add bdrv_set_aio_context()
Up until now all BlockDriverState instances have used the QEMU main loop
for fd handlers, timers, and BHs. This is not scalable on SMP guests
and hosts so we need to move to a model with multiple event loops on
different host CPUs.

bdrv_set_aio_context() assigns the AioContext event loop to use for a
particular BlockDriverState. It first detaches the entire
BlockDriverState graph from the current AioContext and then attaches to
the new AioContext.

This function will be used by virtio-blk data-plane to assign a
BlockDriverState to its IOThread AioContext. Make
bdrv_aio_set_context() public since data-plane should not include
block_int.h.

This drops BlockDriverState.in_use with op_blockers:

  - Call bdrv_op_block_all in place of bdrv_set_in_use(bs, 1).

  - Call bdrv_op_unblock_all in place of bdrv_set_in_use(bs, 0).

  - Check bdrv_op_is_blocked() in place of bdrv_in_use(bs).

The specific types are used, e.g. in place of starting block backup,
    bdrv_op_is_blocked(bs, BLOCK_OP_TYPE_BACKUP, ...).

There is one exception in block_job_create, where
bdrv_op_blocker_is_empty() is used, because we don't know the operation
type here. This doesn't matter because in a few commits away we will drop
the check and move it to callers that _do_ know the type.

  - Check bdrv_op_blocker_is_empty() in place of assert(!bs->in_use).

Note: there is only bdrv_op_block_all and bdrv_op_unblock_all callers at
this moment. So although the checks are specific to op types, this
changes can still be seen as identical logic with previously with
in_use. The difference is error message are improved because of blocker

fbe40ff780 block: Introduce op_blockers to BlockDriverState
BlockDriverState.op_blockers is an array of lists with BLOCK_OP_TYPE_MAX
elements. Each list is a list of blockers of an operation type
(BlockOpType), that marks this BDS as currently blocked for a certain
type of operation with reason errors stored in the list. The rule of
usage is:

 * BDS user who wants to take an operation should check if there's any
blocker of the type with bdrv_op_is_blocked().

 * BDS user who wants to block certain types of operation, should call
bdrv_op_block (or bdrv_op_block_all to block all types of operations,
which is similar to the existing bdrv_set_in_use()).

 * A blocker is only referenced by op_blockers, so the lifecycle is
managed by caller, and shouldn't be lost until unblock, so typically
   a caller does these:

   - Allocate a blocker with error_setg or similar, call bdrv_op_block()
     to block some operations.
   - Hold the blocker, do his job.
   - Unblock operations that it blocked, with the same reason pointer
     passed to bdrv_op_unblock().
   - Release the blocker with error_free().

339064d506 block: Don't use guest sector size for qemu_blockalign()
bs->buffer_alignment is set by the device emulation and contains the
logical block size of the guest device. This isn't something that the
block layer should know, and even less something to use for determining
the right alignment of buffers to be used for the host.

The new BlockLimits field opt_mem_alignment tells the qemu block layer
the optimal alignment to be used so that no bounce buffer must be used
in the driver.

This patch may change the buffer alignment from 4k to 512 for all
callers that used qemu_blockalign() with the top-level image format
BlockDriverState. The value was never propagated to other levels in the
tree, so in particular raw-posix never required anything else than 512.

While on disks with 4k sectors direct I/O requires a 4k alignment,
memory may still be okay when aligned to 512 byte boundaries. This is
what must have happened in practice, because otherwise this would
already have failed earlier. Therefore I don't expect regressions even
with this intermediate state. Later, raw-posix can implement the hook
and expose a different memory alignment requirement.

b94a261057 block: Avoid unecessary drv->bdrv_getlength() calls
The block layer generally keeps the size of an image cached in
bs->total_sectors so that it doesn't have to perform expensive
operations to get the size whenever it needs it.

This doesn't work however when using a backend that can change its size
without qemu being aware of it, i.e. passthrough of removable media like
CD-ROMs or floppy disks. For this reason, the caching is disabled when a
removable device is used.

It is obvious that checking whether the _guest_ device has removable
media isn't the right thing to do when we want to know whether the size
of the host backend can change. To make things worse, non-top-level
BlockDriverStates never have any device attached, which makes qemu
assume they are removable, so drv->bdrv_getlength() is always called on
the protocol layer. In the case of raw-posix, this causes unnecessary
lseek() system calls, which turned out to be rather expensive.

This patch completely changes the logic and disables bs->total_sectors
caching only for certain block driver types, for which a size change is
expected: host_cdrom and host_floppy on POSIX, host_device on win32; also
the raw format in case it sits on top of one of these protocols, but in
the common case the nested bdrv_getlength() call on the protocol driver
will use the cache again and avoid an expensive drv->bdrv_getlength()
call.
