5cc8767d05 general: Replace global smp variables with smp machine properties
Basically, the context could get the MachineState reference via call
chains or unrecommended qdev_get_machine() in !CONFIG_USER_ONLY mode.

A local variable of the same name would be introduced in the declaration
phase out of less effort OR replace it on the spot if it's only used
once in the context. No semantic changes.

fbd162e629 migration: Add an ability to ignore shared RAM blocks
If ignore-shared capability is set then skip shared RAMBlocks during the

Also, move qemu_ram_foreach_migratable_block (and rename) to the

754cb9c0eb exec: Change RAMBlockIterFunc definition
Currently, qemu_ram_foreach_* calls RAMBlockIterFunc with many
block-specific arguments. But often iter func needs RAMBlock*.
This refactoring is needed for fast access to RAMBlock flags from
qemu_ram_foreach_block's callback. The only way to achieve this now
is to call qemu_ram_block_from_host (which also enumerates blocks).

So, this patch reduces complexity of
qemu_ram_foreach_block() -> cb() -> qemu_ram_block_from_host()
from O(n^2) to O(n).

Fix RAMBlockIterFunc definition and add some functions to read
RAMBlock* fields witch were passed.

154304cd6e postcopy: Synchronize usage of the balloon inhibitor
While the qemu_balloon_inhibit() interface appears rather general purpose,
postcopy uses it in a last-caller-wins approach with no guarantee of balanced
inhibits and de-inhibits. Wrap postcopy's usage of the inhibitor to give it
one vote overall, using the same last-caller-wins approach as previously
implemented at the balloon level.

b895de5027 migration: discard non-migratable RAMBlocks
On the POWER9 processor, the XIVE interrupt controller can control
interrupt sources using MMIO to trigger events, to EOI or to turn off
the sources. Priority management and interrupt acknowledgment is also
controlled by MMIO in the presenter sub-engine.

These MMIO regions are exposed to guests in QEMU with a set of 'ram
device' memory mappings, similarly to VFIO, and the VMAs are populated
dynamically with the appropriate pages using a fault handler.

But, these regions are an issue for migration. We need to discard the
associated RAMBlocks from the RAM state on the source VM and let the
destination VM rebuild the memory mappings on the new host in the
post_load() operation just before resuming the system.

To achieve this goal, the following introduces a new RAMBlock flag
RAM_MIGRATABLE which is updated in the vmstate_register_ram() and
vmstate_unregister_ram() routines. This flag is then used by the
migration to identify RAMBlocks to discard on the source. Some checks
are also performed on the destination to make sure nothing invalid was
sent.

This change impacts the boston, malta and jazz mips boards for which
migration compatibility is broken.

3a7804c306 migration: allow fault thread to pause
Allows the fault thread to stop handling page faults temporarily. When
network failure happened (and if we expect a recovery afterwards), we
should not allow the fault thread to continue sending things to source,
instead, it should halt for a while until the connection is rebuilt.

When the dest main thread noticed the failure, it kicks the fault thread
to switch to pause state.

65ace06045 migration: add postcopy total blocktime into query-migrate
Postcopy total blocktime is available on destination side only.
But query-migrate was possible only for source. This patch
adds ability to call query-migrate on destination.
To be able to see postcopy blocktime, need to request postcopy-blocktime
capability.

The query-migrate command will show following sample result:
{"return":
    "postcopy-vcpu-blocktime": [115, 100],

    "postcopy-blocktime": 100
}}

postcopy_vcpu_blocktime contains list, where the first item is the first
vCPU in QEMU.

This patch has a drawback, it combines states of incoming and
outgoing migration. Ongoing migration state will overwrite incoming
state. Looks like better to separate query-migrate for incoming and
outgoing migration or add parameter to indicate type of migration.

575b0b332e migration: calculate vCPU blocktime on dst side
This patch provides blocktime calculation per vCPU,
as a summary and as a overlapped value for all vCPUs.

This approach was suggested by Peter Xu, as an improvements of
previous approch where QEMU kept tree with faulted page address and cpus bitmask
in it. Now QEMU is keeping array with faulted page address as value and vCPU
as index. It helps to find proper vCPU at UFFD_COPY time. Also it keeps
list for blocktime per vCPU (could be traced with page_fault_addr)

Blocktime will not calculated if postcopy_blocktime field of
MigrationIncomingState wasn't initialized.

2a4c42f18c migration: add postcopy blocktime ctx into MigrationIncomingState
This patch adds request to kernel space for UFFD_FEATURE_THREAD_ID, in
case this feature is provided by kernel.

PostcopyBlocktimeContext is encapsulated inside postcopy-ram.c,
due to it being a postcopy-only feature.
Also it defines PostcopyBlocktimeContext's instance live time.
Information from PostcopyBlocktimeContext instance will be provided
much after postcopy migration end, instance of PostcopyBlocktimeContext
will live till QEMU exit, but part of it (vcpu_addr,
page_fault_vcpu_time) used only during calculation, will be released
when postcopy ended or failed.

To enable postcopy blocktime calculation on destination, need to
request proper compatibility (Patch for documentation will be at the
tail of the patch set).

As an example following command enable that capability, assume QEMU was
started with
-chardev socket,id=charmonitor,path=/var/lib/migrate-vm-monitor.sock
option to control it

[root@host]#printf "{\"execute\" : \"qmp_capabilities\"}\r\n \
{\"execute\": \"migrate-set-capabilities\" , \"arguments\":   {
\"capabilities\": [ { \"capability\": \"postcopy-blocktime\", \"state\":
true } ] } }" | nc -U /var/lib/migrate-vm-monitor.sock

Or just with HMP

state. Looks like better to separate query-migrate for incoming and
outgoing migration or add parameter to indicate type of migration.

3be98be4e9 migration: calculate vCPU blocktime on dst side

01a87f0bd3 migration: add postcopy blocktime ctx into MigrationIncomingState
This patch adds request to kernel space for UFFD_FEATURE_THREAD_ID, in
case this feature is provided by kernel.

PostcopyBlocktimeContext is encapsulated inside postcopy-ram.c,
due to it being a postcopy-only feature.
Also it defines PostcopyBlocktimeContext's instance live time.
Information from PostcopyBlocktimeContext instance will be provided
much after postcopy migration end, instance of PostcopyBlocktimeContext
will live till QEMU exit, but part of it (vcpu_addr,
page_fault_vcpu_time) used only during calculation, will be released
when postcopy ended or failed.

To enable postcopy blocktime calculation on destination, need to
request proper compatibility (Patch for documentation will be at the
tail of the patch set).

As an example following command enable that capability, assume QEMU was
started with
-chardev socket,id=charmonitor,path=/var/lib/migrate-vm-monitor.sock
option to control it

[root@host]#printf "{\"execute\" : \"qmp_capabilities\"}\r\n \
{\"execute\": \"migrate-set-capabilities\" , \"arguments\":   {
\"capabilities\": [ { \"capability\": \"postcopy-blocktime\", \"state\":
true } ] } }" | nc -U /var/lib/migrate-vm-monitor.sock

Or just with HMP

f949461489 migration: add bitmap for received page
This patch adds ability to track down already received
pages, it's necessary for calculation vCPU block time in
postcopy migration feature, and for recovery after
postcopy migration failure.

Also it's necessary to solve shared memory issue in
postcopy livemigration. Information about received pages
will be transferred to the software virtual bridge
(e.g. OVS-VSWITCHD), to avoid fallocate (unmap) for
already received pages. fallocate syscall is required for
remmaped shared memory, due to remmaping itself blocks
ioctl(UFFDIO_COPY, ioctl in this case will end with EEXIT
error (struct page is exists after remmap).

Bitmap is placed into RAMBlock as another postcopy/precopy
related bitmaps.

54ae0886b1 migration: split ufd_version_check onto receive/request features part
This modification is necessary for userfault fd features which are
required to be requested from userspace.
UFFD_FEATURE_THREAD_ID is a one of such "on demand" feature, which will
be introduced in the next patch.

QEMU have to use separate userfault file descriptor, due to
userfault context has internal state, and after first call of
ioctl UFFD_API it changes its state to UFFD_STATE_RUNNING (in case of
success), but kernel while handling ioctl UFFD_API expects UFFD_STATE_WAIT_API.

madvise() returns EINVAL in the case of many failures, but also
returns it in cases where the host kernel doesn't have THP enabled.
Postcopy only really cares that THP is off before it detects faults,

to assume that if the madvise fails then the host just doesn't do
THP and we can carry on with the postcopy.

371ff5a3f0 Inhibit ballooning during postcopy
Postcopy detects accesses to pages that haven't been transferred yet
using userfaultfd, and it causes exceptions on pages that are 'not
present'.
Ballooning also causes pages to be marked as 'not present' when the
guest inflates the balloon.
Potentially a balloon could be inflated to discard pages that are
currently inflight during postcopy and that may be arriving at about
the same time.

To avoid this confusion, disable ballooning during postcopy.

When disabled we drop balloon requests from the guest. Since ballooning
is generally initiated by the host, the management system should avoid
initiating any balloon instructions to the guest during migration,
although it's not possible to know how long it would take a guest to
process a request made prior to the start of migration.
Guest initiated ballooning will not know if it's really freed a page
of host memory or not.

Queueing the requests until after migration would be nice, but is
non-trivial, since the set of inflate/deflate requests have to
be compared with the state of the page to know what the final
outcome is allowed to be.

f952710757 Postcopy: Mark nohugepage before discard
Prior to servicing userfault requests we must ensure we've not got
huge pages in the area that might include non-transferred memory,
since a hugepage could incorrectly mark the whole huge page as present.

We mark the area as non-huge page (nhp) just before we perform
discards; the discard code now tells us to discard any areas
that haven't been sent (as well as any that are redirtied);
any already formed transparent-huge-pages get fragmented
by this discard process if they cotnain any discards.

Transparent huge pages that have been entirely transferred
and don't contain any discards are not broken by this mechanism;
they stay as huge pages.

By starting postcopy after a full precopy pass, many of the pages
then stay as huge pages; this is important for maintaining performance
after the end of the migration.

c4faeed231 Postcopy; Handle userfault requests
userfaultfd is a Linux syscall that gives an fd that receives a stream
of notifications of accesses to pages registered with it and allows
the program to acknowledge those stalls and tell the accessing
thread to carry on.

We convert the requests from the kernel into messages back to the
source asking for the pages.
