While refactoring qed_aio_write_alloc() to accomodate the change,

3b7cd9fd8f qed: Use bottom half to resume waiting requests
The qed driver serialises allocating write requests. When the active
allocation is finished, the AIO callback is called, but after this, the
next allocating request is immediately processed instead of leaving the
coroutine. Resuming another allocation request in the same request
coroutine means that the request now runs in the wrong coroutine.

The following is one of the possible effects of this: The completed
request will generally reenter its request coroutine in a bottom half,
expecting that it completes the request in bdrv_driver_pwritev().
However, if the second request actually yielded before leaving the
coroutine, the reused request coroutine is in an entirely different
place and is reentered prematurely. Not a good idea.

Let's make sure that we exit the coroutine after completing the first
request by resuming the next allocating request only with a bottom
half.

55880601d8 block: Add BDRV_O_RESIZE for blk_new_open()
blk_new_open() is a convenience function that processes flags rather
than QDict options as a simple way to just open an image file.

In order to keep it convenient in the future, it must automatically
request the necessary permissions. This can easily be inferred from the
flags for read and write, but we need another flag that tells us whether
to get the resize permission.

We can't just always request it because that means that no block jobs
can run on the resulting BlockBackend (which is something that e.g.
qemu-img commit wants to do), but we also can't request it never because
most of the .bdrv_create() implementations call blk_truncate().

The solution is to introduce another flag that is passed by all users
that want to resize the image.

4e4bf5c42c block: Attach bs->file only during .bdrv_open()
The way that attaching bs->file worked was a bit unusual in that it was
the only child that would be attached to a node which is not opened yet.
Because of this, the block layer couldn't know yet which permissions the
driver would eventually need.

This patch moves the point where bs->file is attached to the beginning
of the individual .bdrv_open() implementations, so drivers already know
what they are going to do with the child. This is also more consistent
with how driver-specific children work.

For a moment, bdrv_open() gets its own BdrvChild to perform image
probing, but instead of directly assigning this BdrvChild to the BDS, it
becomes a temporary one and the node name is passed as an option to the
drivers, so that they can simply use bdrv_open_child() to create another
reference for their own use.

This duplicated child for (the not opened yet) bs is not the final
state, a follow-up patch will change the image probing code to use a
BlockBackend, which is completely independent of bs.

6653a73d12 qed: Implement .bdrv_drain
The "need_check_timer" is used to clear the "NEED_CHECK" flag in the
image header after a grace period once metadata update has finished. To
comply with the bdrv_drain semantics, we should make sure it remains
deleted once .bdrv_drain is called.

The change to qed_need_check_timer_cb is needed because bdrv_qed_drain
is called after s->bs has been drained, and should not operate on it;
instead it should operate on the BdrvChild-ren exclusively. Doing so
is easy because QED does not have a bdrv_co_flush_to_os callback, hence
all that is needed to flush it is to ensure writes have reached the disk.

Based on commit df9a681dc9 (which however included some unrelated
hunks, possibly due to a merge failure or an overlooked squash).
The patch was reverted because at the time bdrv_qed_drain could call
qed_plug_allocating_write_reqs while an allocating write was queued.
This however is not possible anymore after the previous patch;
.bdrv_drain is only called after all writes have completed at the
QED level, and its purpose is to trigger metadata writes in bs->file.

0b8b8753e4 coroutine: move entry argument to qemu_coroutine_create
In practice the entry argument is always known at creation time, and
it is confusing that sometimes qemu_coroutine_enter is used with a
non-NULL argument to re-enter a coroutine (this happens in
block/sheepdog.c and tests/test-coroutine.c). So pass the opaque value

Mostly done with the following semantic patch:

cf081fca4e block: Track write zero limits in bytes
Another step towards removing sector-based interfaces: convert
the maximum write and minimum alignment values from sectors to
bytes. Rename the variables to let the compiler check that all
users are converted to the new semantics.

The maximum remains an int as long as BDRV_REQUEST_MAX_SECTORS
is constrained by INT_MAX (this means that we can't even
support a 2G write_zeroes, but just under it) - changing
operation lengths to unsigned or to 64-bits is a much bigger
audit, and debatable if we even want to do it (since at the
core, a 32-bit platform will still have ssize_t as its
underlying limit on write()).

Meanwhile, alignment is changed to 'uint32_t', since it makes no
sense to have an alignment larger than the maximum write, and
less painful to use an unsigned type with well-defined behavior
in bit operations than to have to worry about what happens if
a driver mistakenly supplies a negative alignment.

Add an assert that no one was trying to use sectors to get a
write zeroes larger than 2G, and therefore that a later conversion
to bytes won't be impacted by keeping the limit at 32 bits.

qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to

100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.

Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.

Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.

This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

efaa7c4eeb blockdev: Split monitor reference from BB creation
Before this patch, blk_new() automatically assigned a name to the new
BlockBackend and considered it referenced by the monitor. This patch
removes the implicit monitor_add_blk() call from blk_new() (and
consequently the monitor_remove_blk() call from blk_delete(), too) and
thus blk_new() (and related functions) no longer take a BB name
argument.

In fact, there is only a single point where blk_new()/blk_new_open() is
called and the new BB is monitor-owned, and that is in blockdev_init().
Besides thus relieving us from having to invent names for all of the BBs
we use in qemu-img, this fixes a bug where qemu cannot create a new
image if there already is a monitor-owned BB named "image".

If a BB and its BDS tree are created in a single operation, as of this
patch the BDS tree will be created before the BB is given a name
(whereas it was the other way around before). This results in minor
change to the output of iotest 087, whose reference output is amended
accordingly.

This changes the output for iotest 036 (to the better, in my opinion),

1f3ddfcb25 Revert "qed: Implement .bdrv_drain"
This reverts commit df9a681dc9.

Note that commit df9a681dc9 included some
unrelated hunks, possibly due to a merge failure or an overlooked
squash. This only reverts the qed .bdrv_drain() implementation.

The qed .bdrv_drain() implementation is unsafe and can lead to a double
request completion.

Paolo Bonzini reports:
"The problem is that bdrv_qed_drain calls qed_plug_allocating_write_reqs
unconditionally, but this is not correct if an allocating write is
queued. In this case, qed_unplug_allocating_write_reqs will restart the
allocating write and possibly cause it to complete. The aiocb however
is still in use for the L2/L1 table writes, and will then be completed
again as soon as the table writes are stable."

For QEMU 2.6 we can simply revert this commit. A full solution for the
qed need check timer may be added if the bdrv_drain() implementation is
extended.

4ab1559085 qemu-img create: add 'nocow' option
Add 'nocow' option so that users could have a chance to set NOCOW flag to
newly created files. It's useful on btrfs file system to enhance performance.

Btrfs has low performance when hosting VM images, even more when the guest
in those VM are also using btrfs as file system. One way to mitigate this bad
performance is to turn off COW attributes on VM files. Generally, there are
two ways to turn off NOCOW on btrfs: a) by mounting fs with nodatacow, then
all newly created files will be NOCOW. b) per file. Add the NOCOW file
attribute. It could only be done to empty or new files.

This patch tries the second way, according to the option, it could add NOCOW
per file.

For most block drivers, since the create file step is in raw-posix.c, so we
can do setting NOCOW flag ioctl in raw-posix.c only.

But there are some exceptions, like block/vpc.c and block/vdi.c, they are
creating file by calling qemu_open directly. For them, do the same setting
NOCOW flag ioctl work in them separately.

.has_zero_init defaults to 1 for all formats and protocols.

this is a dangerous default since this means that all
new added drivers need to manually overwrite it to 0 if

after bdrv_create().

if a driver needs to explicitly set this value to
1 its easier to verify the correctness in the review process.

during review of the existing drivers it turned out
that ssh and gluster had a wrong default of 1.
both protocols support host_devices as backend
which are not by default zero initialized. this
wrong assumption will lead to possible corruption
if qemu-img convert is used to write to such a backend.

vpc and vmdk also defaulted to 1 altough they support
fixed respectively flat extends. this has to be addresses
in separate patches. both formats as well as the mentioned
ssh and gluster are turned to the default of 0 with this
patch for safety.

a similar problem with the wrong default existed for
iscsi most likely because the driver developer did

058f8f16db block: add BLOCK_O_CHECK for qemu-img check
Image formats with a dirty bit, like qed and qcow2, repair dirty image
files upon open with BDRV_O_RDWR. Performing automatic repair when
qemu-img check runs is not ideal because the bdrv_open() call repairs
the image before the actual bdrv_check() call from qemu-img.c.

Fix this "double repair" since it leads to confusing output from
qemu-img check. Tell the block driver that this image is being opened
just for bdrv_check(). This skips automatic repair and qemu-img.c can
invoke it manually with bdrv_check().

1b093c480a consolidate qemu_iovec_copy() and qemu_iovec_concat() and make them consistent
qemu_iovec_concat() is currently a wrapper for
qemu_iovec_copy(), use the former (with extra
"0" arg) in a few places where it is used.

Change skip argument of qemu_iovec_copy() from
uint64_t to size_t, since size of qiov itself
is size_t, so there's no way to skip larger
sizes. Rename it to soffset, to make it clear
that the offset is applied to src.

Also change the only usage of uint64_t in
hw/9pfs/virtio-9p.c, in v9fs_init_qiov_from_pdu() -
all callers of it actually uses size_t too,
not uint64_t.

One added restriction: as for all other iovec-related
functions, soffset must point inside src.

Order of argumens is already good:
 qemu_iovec_memset(QEMUIOVector *qiov, size_t offset,
                   int c, size_t bytes)
vs:
 qemu_iovec_concat(QEMUIOVector *dst,
                   QEMUIOVector *src,
                   size_t soffset, size_t sbytes)
(note soffset is after _src_ not dst, since it applies to src;
for memset it applies to qiov).

Note that in many places where this function is used,
the previous call is qemu_iovec_reset(), which means
many callers actually want copy (replacing dst content),
not concat. So we may want to add a wrapper like
qemu_iovec_copy() with the same arguments but which
calls qemu_iovec_reset() before _concat().

3d9b49254f consolidate qemu_iovec_memset{,_skip}() into single function and use existing iov_memset()
This patch combines two functions into one, and replaces
the implementation with already existing iov_memset() from
iov.c.

The new prototype of qemu_iovec_memset():
  size_t qemu_iovec_memset(qiov, size_t offset, int fillc, size_t bytes)
It is different from former qemu_iovec_memset_skip(), and
I want to make other functions to be consistent with it
too: first how much to skip, second what, and 3rd how many
of it. It also returns actual number of bytes filled in,
which may be less than the requested `bytes' if qiov is
smaller than offset+bytes, in the same way iov_memset()
does.

While at it, use utility function iov_memset() from
iov.h in posix-aio-compat.c, where qiov was used.

0e71be1932 qed: add .bdrv_co_write_zeroes() support
Zero writes are a dedicated interface for writing regions of zeroes into
the image file. If clusters are not yet allocated it is possible to use
an efficient metadata representation which keeps the image file compact

Implementing this for the QED image format is fairly straightforward.
The only issue is that when a zero write touches an existing cluster we
have to allocate a bounce buffer and perform a regular write.

l2_table may have been freed due to a metadata lookup race. Fix this by
keeping the l2_offset in a local variable and not reaching into the
possibly freed l2_table.

384acbf46b async: Remove AsyncContext
The purpose of AsyncContexts was to protect qcow and qcow2 against reentrancy
during an emulated bdrv_read/write (which includes a qemu_aio_wait() call and
can run AIO callbacks of different requests if it weren't for AsyncContexts).

Now both qcow and qcow2 are protected by CoMutexes and AsyncContexts can be
removed.

99cce9fa4e qemu-img create: Fix displayed default cluster size
When not specifying a cluster size on the command line, qemu-img printed
a cluster size of 0:

    Formatting '/tmp/test.qcow2', fmt=qcow2 size=67108864
    encryption=off cluster_size=0

This patch adds the default cluster size to the QEMUOptionParameter list, so
that it displays the default value that is used.

77a5a0001b qed: support for growing images
The .bdrv_truncate() operation resizes images and growing is easy to
implement in QED. Simply check that the new size is valid and then
update the image_size header field to reflect the new size.

6f321e93ab qed: Periodically flush and clear need check bit
One strategy to limit the startup delay of consistency check when
opening image files is to ensure that the file is marked dirty for as
little time as possible.

QED currently marks the image dirty when the first allocating write
request is issued and clears the dirty bit again when the image is
cleanly closed. In practice that means the image is marked dirty for
most of a guest's lifetime and prone to being in a dirty state upon
crash or power failure.

It is safe to clear the dirty bit after all allocating write requests
have completed and a flush has been performed. This patch adds a timer
after the last allocating write request completes. When the timer fires
it will flush and then clear the dirty bit. The timer is set to 5
seconds and is cancelled upon arrival of a new allocating write request.

21df65b644 qed: Add support for zero clusters
Zero clusters are similar to unallocated clusters except instead of reading
their value from a backing file when one is available, the cluster is always
read as zero.

This implements read support only. At this stage, QED will never write a
zero cluster.

0d09c79700 qed: Images with backing file do not require QED_F_NEED_CHECK
The consistency check on open is necessary in order to fix inconsistent
table offsets left as a result of a crash mid-operation. Images with a
backing file actually flush before updating table offsets and are
therefore guaranteed to be consistent. Do not mark these images dirty.

01979a98d7 qed: Consistency check support
This patch adds support for the qemu-img check command. It also
introduces a dirty bit in the qed header to mark modified images as
needing a check. This bit is cleared when the image file is closed
cleanly.

If an image file is opened and it has the dirty bit set, a consistency
check will run and try to fix corrupted table offsets. These
corruptions may occur if there is power loss while an allocating write
is performed. Once the image is fixed it opens as normal again.

fully asynchronous and multiple operations may be active at any time.

298800cae7 qed: Table, L2 cache, and cluster functions
This patch adds code to look up data cluster offsets in the image via
the L1/L2 tables. The L2 tables are writethrough cached in memory for
performance (each read/write requires a lookup so it is essential to
cache the tables).

With cluster lookup code in place it is possible to implement
bdrv_is_allocated() to query the number of contiguous
allocated/unallocated clusters.
