4b80ab2b7d qapi: Rename 'dirty-bitmap' mode to 'incremental'
If we wish to make differential backups a feature that's easy to access,
it might be pertinent to rename the "dirty-bitmap" mode to "incremental"
to make it clear what /type/ of backup the dirty-bitmap is helping us
perform.

This is an API breaking change, but 2.4 has not yet gone live,
so we have this flexibility.

d5941ddae8 vvfat: add a label option
Until now the vvfat volume label was hardcoded to be
"QEMU VVFAT", now you can pass a file.label=labelname option
to the -drive to change it.

The FAT structure defines the volume label to be limited to
11 bytes and is filled up spaces when shorter than that. The
trailing spaces however aren't exposed to the user by
operating systems.

c6bd8c706a qerror: Clean up QERR_ macros to expand into a single string
These macros expand into error class enumeration constant, comma,
string. Unclean. Has been that way since commit 13f59ae.

The error class is always ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR since the previous
commit.

Clean up as follows:

* Prepend every use of a QERR_ macro by ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, and
delete it from the QERR_ macro. No change after preprocessing.

* Rewrite error_set(ERROR_CLASS_GENERIC_ERROR, ...) into

76f4afb40f throttle: Add throttle group support
The throttle group support use a cooperative round robin scheduling
algorithm.

The principles of the algorithm are simple:
- Each BDS of the group is used as a token in a circular way.
- The active BDS computes if a wait must be done and arms the right
  timer.
- If a wait must be done the token timer will be armed so the token
will become the next active BDS.

9abe3bdc45 qapi: add dirty bitmap status
Bitmaps can be in a handful of different states with potentially
more to come as we tool around with migration and persistence patches.

Management applications may need to know why certain bitmaps are
unavailable for various commands, e.g. busy in another operation,
busy being migrated, etc.

Right now, all we offer is BlockDirtyInfo's boolean member 'frozen'.
Instead of adding more booleans, replace it by an enumeration member
'status' with values 'active' and 'frozen'. Then add new value
'disabled'.

Incompatible change. Fine because the changed part hasn't been
released so far.

4752cdbbf3 qapi: Drop inline nested struct in query-version
A future patch will be using a 'name':{dictionary} entry in the
QAPI schema to specify a default value for an optional argument
(see previous commit message for more details why); but existing
use of inline nested structs conflicts with that goal. This patch
fixes one of only two commands relying on nested types, by
breaking the nesting into an explicit type; it means that the
type is now boxed instead of unboxed in C code, but the QMP wire
format is unaffected by this change.

Prefer the safer g_new0() while making the conversion.

895a2a80e0 qapi: Use 'struct' instead of 'type' in schema
Referring to "type" as both a meta-type (built-in, enum, union,
alternate, or struct) and a specific type (the name that the
schema uses for declaring structs) is confusing. Do the bulk of
the conversion to "struct" in qapi schema, with a fairly
mechanical:

for f in `find -name '*.json'; do sed -i "s/'type'/'struct'/"; done

followed by manually filtering out the places where we have a
'type' embedded in 'data'. Then tweak a couple of tests whose
output changes slightly due to longer lines.

I also verified that the generated files for QMP and QGA (such
as qmp-commands.h) are the same before and after, as assurance
that I didn't leave in any accidental member name changes.

Previous patches have led up to the point where I create the

of it is churn due to testsuite fallout after updating to the

9bd2b08f27 block: Add bitmap successors
A bitmap successor is an anonymous BdrvDirtyBitmap that is intended to
be created just prior to a sensitive operation (e.g. Incremental Backup)
that can either succeed or fail, but during the course of which we still
want a bitmap tracking writes.

On creating a successor, we "freeze" the parent bitmap which prevents
its deletion, enabling, anonymization, or creating a bitmap with the
same name.

On success, the parent bitmap can "abdicate" responsibility to the
successor, which will inherit its name. The successor will have been
tracking writes during the course of the backup operation. The parent
will be safely deleted.

On failure, we can "reclaim" the successor from the parent, unifying
them such that the resulting bitmap describes all writes occurring since
the last successful backup, for instance. Reclamation will thaw the
parent, but not explicitly re-enable it.

BdrvDirtyBitmap operations that target a single bitmap are protected
by assertions that the bitmap is not frozen and/or disabled.

BdrvDirtyBitmap operations that target a group of bitmaps, such as
bdrv_{set,reset}_dirty will ignore frozen/disabled drives with a
conditional instead.

Internal functions that enable/disable dirty bitmaps have assertions
added to them to prevent modifying frozen bitmaps.

341ebc2f81 qmp: Add block-dirty-bitmap-add and block-dirty-bitmap-remove
The new command pair is added to manage a user created dirty bitmap. The
dirty bitmap's name is mandatory and must be unique for the same device,
but different devices can have bitmaps with the same names.

The granularity is an optional field. If it is not specified, we will
choose a default granularity based on the cluster size if available,
clamped to between 4K and 64K to mirror how the 'mirror' code was
already choosing granularity. If we do not have cluster size info
available, we choose 64K. This code has been factored out into a helper
shared with block/mirror.

This patch also introduces the 'block_dirty_bitmap_lookup' helper,
which takes a device name and a dirty bitmap name and validates the
lookup, returning NULL and setting errp if there is a problem with
either field. This helper will be re-used in future patches in this
series.

The types added to block-core.json will be re-used in future patches
in this series, see:

e2462113b2 block: add event when disk usage exceeds threshold
Managing applications, like oVirt (http://www.ovirt.org), make extensive
use of thin-provisioned disk images.
To let the guest run smoothly and be not unnecessarily paused, oVirt sets
a disk usage threshold (so called 'high water mark') based on the occupation
of the device, and automatically extends the image once the threshold
is reached or exceeded.

In order to detect the crossing of the threshold, oVirt has no choice but
aggressively polling the QEMU monitor using the query-blockstats command.
This lead to unnecessary system load, and is made even worse under scale:
deployments with hundreds of VMs are no longer rare.

To fix this, this patch adds:
* A new monitor command `block-set-write-threshold', to set a mark for
  a given block device.
* A new event `BLOCK_WRITE_THRESHOLD', to report if a block device
  usage exceeds the threshold.
* A new `write_threshold' field into the `BlockDeviceInfo' structure,
  to report the configured threshold.

This will allow the managing application to use smarter and more
efficient monitoring, greatly reducing the need of polling.

property. --Stefan]

24bf10dac3 Revert "qemu-img info: show nocow info"
This reverts commit 000c4dfff4.

The main reason for reverting this commit before the 2.2 release is that
it adds a QAPI interface that we don't want to keep: The 'nocow' flag
doesn't generally make sense for block nodes, but only for the raw-posix
driver. It should therefore be part of ImageInfoSpecific rather than
ImageInfo.

The commit contains more problems, but unlike the API stability issue
they wouldn't justify reverting it.

cee2dedb85 qapi: add visit_start_union and visit_end_union
In some cases an input visitor might bail out on filling out a
struct for various reasons, such as missing fields when running
in strict mode. In the case of a QAPI Union type, this may lead
to cases where the .kind field which encodes the union type
is uninitialized. Subsequently, other visitors, such as the
dealloc visitor, may use this .kind value as if it were
initialized, leading to assumptions about the union type which
in this case may lead to segfaults. For example, freeing an
integer value.

However, we can generally rely on the fact that the always-present
.data void * field that we generate for these union types will
always be NULL in cases where .kind is uninitialized (at least,
there shouldn't be a reason where we'd do this purposefully).

So pass this information on to Visitor implementation via these
optional start_union/end_union interfaces so this information
can be used to guard against the situation above. We will make
use of this information in a subsequent patch for the dealloc
visitor.

550830f935 block: delete cow block driver
This patch removes support for the cow file format.

Normally we do not break backwards compatibility but in this case there
is no impact and it is the most logical option. Extraordinary claims
require extraordinary evidence so I will show why removing the cow block
driver is the right thing to do.

The cow file format is the disk image format for Usermode Linux, a way
of running a Linux system in userspace. The performance of UML was
never great and it was hacky, but it enjoyed some popularity before
hardware virtualization support became mainstream.

QEMU's block/cow.c is supposed to read this image file format.
Unfortunately the file format was underspecified:

1. Earlier Linux versions used the MAXPATHLEN constant for the backing
filename field. The value of MAXPATHLEN can change, so Linux
switched to a 4096 literal but QEMU has a 1024 literal.

2. Padding was not used on the header struct (both in the Linux kernel
and in QEMU) so the struct layout varied across architectures. In
particular, i386 and x86_64 were different due to int64_t alignment
differences. Linux now uses __attribute__((packed)), QEMU does not.

Therefore:

1. QEMU cow images do not conform to the Linux cow image file format.

2. cow images cannot be shared between different host architectures.

This means QEMU cow images are useless and QEMU has not had bug reports
from users actually hitting these issues.

Let's get rid of this thing, it serves no purpose and no one will be
affected.

e819ab2277 block: Introduce "null" drivers
This is an analogue to Linux null_blk. It can be used for testing or
benchmarking block device emulation and general block layer
functionalities such as coroutines and throttling, where disk IO is not
necessary or wanted.

Use null-aio:// for AIO version, and null-co:// for coroutine version.

[Resolved conflict with Fam's async bdrv_aio_cancel() series:
1. Drop .bdrv_aio_cancel() since it is now done by block.c
2. Rename qemu_aio_release() to qemu_aio_unref()

624ff5736e block: extend BLOCK_IO_ERROR with reason string
BLOCK_IO_ERROR events are logged by libvirt, which helps with
post mortem analysis of guests. However, one information that
we miss today is a human readable string describing the cause
of the I/O error.

This commit adds that string it to BLOCK_IO_ERROR. Note that
this string is a debugging aid for humans, meaning that it
should not parsed by applications.

c7c2ff0c7e block: extend BLOCK_IO_ERROR event with nospace indicator
Management software, such as RHEV's vdsm, want to be able to allocate
disk space on demand. The basic use case is to start a VM with a small
disk and then the disk is enlarged when QEMU hits a ENOSPC condition.

To this end, the management software has to be notified when QEMU
encounters ENOSPC. The solution implemented by this commit is simple:
it extends the BLOCK_IO_ERROR with a 'nospace' key, which is true
when QEMU is stopped due to ENOSPC.

Note that support for querying this event is already present in
query-block by means of the 'io-status' key. Also, the new 'nospace'
BLOCK_IO_ERROR field shares the same semantics with 'io-status',
which basically means that werror= has to be set to either
'stop' or 'enospc' to enable 'nospace'.

Finally, this commit also updates the 'io-status' key doc in the
schema with a list of supported device models.

13d8cc515d block: add backing-file option to block-stream
On some image chains, QEMU may not always be able to resolve the
filenames properly, when updating the backing file of an image
after a block job.

For instance, certain relative pathnames may fail, or drives may
have been specified originally by file descriptor (e.g. /dev/fd/???),
or a relative protocol pathname may have been used.

In these instances, QEMU may lack the information to be able to make
the correct choice, but the user or management layer most likely does
have that knowledge.

With this extension to the block-stream api, the user is able to change
the backing file of the active layer as part of the block-stream
operation.

This allows the change to be 'safe', in the sense that if the attempt
to write the active image metadata fails, then the block-stream
operation returns failure, without disrupting the guest.

If a backing file string is not specified in the command, the backing
file string to use is determined in the same manner as it was
previously.

54e2690090 block: extend block-commit to accept a string for the backing file
On some image chains, QEMU may not always be able to resolve the

have been specified originally by file descriptor (e.g. /dev/fd/???),

the backing file of the overlay image as part of the block-commit
operation.

This allows the change to be 'safe', in the sense that if the attempt
to write the overlay image metadata fails, then the block-commit
operation returns failure, without disrupting the guest.

If the commit top is the active layer, then specifying the backing
file string will be treated as an error (there is no overlay image
to modify in that case).

If a backing file string is not specified in the command, the backing
file string to use is determined in the same manner as it was

fa40e65622 block: add QAPI command to allow live backing file change
This allows a user to make a live change to the backing file recorded in
an open image.

The image file to modify can be specified 2 ways:

1) image filename
2) image node-name

Note: this does not cause the backing file itself to be reopened; it
merely changes the backing filename in the image file structure, and
in internal BDS structures.

It is the responsibility of the user to pass a filename string that
can be resolved when the image chain is reopened, and the filename
string is not validated.

A good analogy for this command is that it is a live version of
'qemu-img rebase -u', with respect to changing the backing file string.

[Jeff is offline so I respun this patch in his absence. Dropped image
filename since using node-name is preferred and this is a new command.
No need to introduce the limitations of finding images by filename.

dc8622f2bf QemuOpts: change opt->name|str from (const char *) to (char *)
qemu_opt_del() already assumes that all QemuOpt instances contain
malloc'd name and value; but it had to cast away const because
opts_start_struct() was doing its own thing and using static storage
instead. By using the correct type and malloced strings everywhere, the
usage of this struct becomes clearer.

297a3646c2 qapi: Replace uncommon use of the error API by the common one
We commonly use the error API like this:

    err = NULL;
    foo(..., &err);
    if (err) {
        goto out;
    }
    bar(..., &err);

Every error source is checked separately. The second function is only
called when the first one succeeds. Both functions are free to pass
their argument to error_set(). Because error_set() asserts no error
has been set, this effectively means they must not be called with an
error set.

The qapi-generated code uses the error API differently:

// *errp was initialized to NULL somewhere up the call chain
    frob(..., errp);
    gnat(..., errp);

Errors accumulate in *errp: first error wins, subsequent errors get
dropped. To make this work, the second function does nothing when
called with an error set. Requires non-null errp, or else the second
function can't see the first one fail.

This usage has also bled into visitor tests, and two device model
object property getters rtc_get_date() and balloon_stats_get_all().

With the "accumulate" technique, you need fewer error checks in
callers, and buy that with an error check in every callee. Can be
nice.

However, mixing the two techniques is confusing. You can't use the
"accumulate" technique with functions designed for the "check
separately" technique. You can use the "check separately" technique
with functions designed for the "accumulate" technique, but then
error_set() can't catch you setting an error more than once.

Standardize on the "check separately" technique for now, because it's
overwhelmingly prevalent.

e2cd0f4fb4 qapi: Replace start_optional()/end_optional() by optional()
Semantics of end_optional() differ subtly from the other end_FOO()
callbacks: when start_FOO() succeeds, the matching end_FOO() gets
called regardless of what happens in between. end_optional() gets
called only when everything in between succeeds as well. Entirely
undocumented, like all of the visitor API.

The only user of Visitor Callback end_optional() never did anything,
and was removed in commit 9f9ab46.

I'm about to clean up error handling in the generated visitor code,
and end_optional() is in my way. No users mean no test cases, and
making non-trivial cleanup transformations without test cases doesn't
strike me as a good idea.

Drop end_optional(), and rename start_optional() to optional(). We
can always go back to a pair of callbacks when we have an actual need.

ee16ce9337 qapi: Clean up fragile use of error_is_set()
Using error_is_set(ERRP) to find out whether a function failed is
either wrong, fragile, or unnecessarily opaque. It's wrong when ERRP
may be null, because errors go undetected when it is. It's fragile
when proving ERRP non-null involves a non-local argument. Else, it's
unnecessarily opaque (see commit 84d18f0).

The error_is_set(errp) in do_qmp_dispatch() is merely fragile, because
the caller never passes a null errp argument.

Make the code more robust and more obviously correct: receive the
error in a local variable, then propagate it through the parameter.

* The desired specification is %g rather than %f, which always uses three

d8754f40ac OptsVisitor: introduce list modes for interval flattening
The new modes are equal-rank, exclusive alternatives of LM_IN_PROGRESS.
Teach opts_next_list(), opts_type_int() and opts_type_uint64() to handle
them.

Also enumerate explicitly what functions are valid to call in what modes:
- opts_next_list() is valid to call while flattening a range,
- opts_end_list(): ditto,
- lookup_scalar() is invalid to call during flattening; generated qapi
traversal code must continue asking for the same kind of signed/unsigned
list element until the interval is fully flattened,
- processed(): ditto.

List mode restrictions are always formulated in positive / inclusive
sense. The restrictions for lookup_scalar() and processed() are
automatically satisfied by current qapi traversals if the schema to build
is compatible with OptsVisitor.

d957043412 OptsVisitor: introduce basic list modes
We're going to need more state while processing a list of repeated

Additionally, it is documented that lookup_scalar() and processed(), both
called by opts_type_XXX(), are invalid in LM_STARTED -- generated qapi

to parse a scalar into it. List mode restrictions are expressed in

eb7ee2cbeb qapi: introduce OptsVisitor
This visitor supports parsing

  -option [type=]discriminator[,optarg1=val1][,optarg2=val2][,...]

style QemuOpts objects into "native" C structures. After defining the type
tree in the qapi schema (see below), a root type traversal with this
visitor linked to the underlying QemuOpts object will build the "native" C
representation of the option.

The type tree in the schema, corresponding to an option with a
discriminator, must have the following structure:

  struct
    scalar member for non-discriminated optarg 1 [*]
    list for repeating non-discriminated optarg 2 [*]
      wrapper struct
        single scalar member
    union
      struct for discriminator case 1
scalar member for optarg 3 [*]
list for repeating optarg 4 [*]
          wrapper struct
            single scalar member
scalar member for optarg 5 [*]
      struct for discriminator case 2
        ...

The "type" optarg name is fixed for the discriminator role. Its schema
representation is "union of structures", and each discriminator value must
correspond to a member name in the union.

If the option takes no "type" descriminator, then the type subtree rooted
at the union must be absent from the schema (including the union itself).

Optarg values can be of scalar types str / bool / integers / size.

Members marked with [*] may be defined as optional in the schema,
describing an optional optarg.

Repeating an optarg is supported; its schema representation must be "list
of structure with single mandatory scalar member". If an optarg is not
described as repeating in the schema (ie. it is defined as a scalar field
instead of a list), its last occurrence will take effect. Ordering between
differently named optargs is not preserved.

A mandatory list (or an optional one which is reported to be available),
corresponding to a repeating optarg, has at least one element after
successful parsing.

v1->v2:
- Update opts_type_size() prototype to uint64_t.
- Add opts_type_uint64() for options needing the full uint64_t range.
(Internals could be extracted to "cutils.c".)
- Allow negative values in opts_type_int().
- Rebase to nested Makefiles.

v2->v3:
- Factor opts_visitor_insert() out of opts_start_struct() and call it
separately for opts_root->id if there's any.
- Don't require non-negative values in opts_type_int()'s error message.
- g_malloc0() may return NULL for zero-sized requests. Support empty

173bbb754f qapi: String visitor, use %f representation for floats
Currently string-output-visitor formats floats as %g, which is nice in
that trailing 0's are automatically truncated, but otherwise this causes
some issues:

 - it uses 6 significant figures instead of 6 decimal places, which
means something like 155777.5 (which even has an exact floating point
representation) will be rounded to 155778 when converted to a string.

 - output will be presented in scientific notation when the normalized
form requires a 10^x multiplier. Not a huge deal, but arguably less
   readable for command-line arguments.

 - due to using scientific notation for numbers requiring more than 6
significant figures, instead of hard-defined decimal places, it
fails a lot of the test-visitor-serialization unit tests for floats.

Instead, let's just use %f, which is what the QJSON and the QMP visitors
use.

3a86a0fa76 qapi: untangle next_list
Right now, the semantics of next_list are complicated. The caller must:

* call start_list

* call next_list for each element *including the first*

* on the first call to next_list, the second argument should point to
NULL and the result is the head of the list. On subsequent calls,
the second argument should point to the last node (last result of
next_list) and next_list itself tacks the element at the tail of the
list.

This works for both input and output visitor, but having the visitor
write memory when it is only reading the list is ugly. Plus, relying
on *list to detect the first call is tricky and undocumented.

We can initialize so->entry in next_list instead of start_list, leaving
it NULL in start_list. This way next_list sees clearly whether it is
on the first call---as a bonus, it discriminates the cases based on
internal state of the visitor rather than external state. We can
also pull the assignment of the list head from generated code up to
next_list.

e4e6aa14ed qapi: add QMP output visitor
Type of Visiter class that serves as the inverse of the input visitor:
it takes a series of native C types and uses their values to construct a
corresponding QObject. The command marshaling/dispatcher functions will
use this to convert the output of QMP functions into a QObject that can
be sent over the wire.

c40cc0a0dd qapi: add QMP input visitor
A type of Visiter class that is used to walk a qobject's
structure and assign each entry to the corresponding native C type.
Command marshaling function will use this to pull out QMP command
parameters recieved over the wire and pass them as native arguments
to the corresponding C functions.

2345c77c6d qapi: add QAPI visitor core
Base definitions/includes for Visiter interface used by generated
visiter/marshalling code.

Includes a GenericList type. Our lists require an embedded element.
Since these types are generated, if you want to use them in a different
type of data structure, there's no easy way to add another embedded
element. The solution is to have non-embedded lists and that what this is.
