Now that all front end use qemu_chr_fe_init(), we can move chardev
claiming in init(), and add a function deinit() to release the chardev
and cleanup handlers.
The qemu_chr_fe_claim_no_fail() for property are gone, since the
property will raise an error instead. In other cases, where there is
already an error path, an error is raised instead. Finally, other cases
are handled by &error_abort in qemu_chr_fe_init().

The qemu_chr_fe_write method will return -1 on EAGAIN if the
chardev backend write would block. Almost no callers of the
qemu_chr_fe_write() method check the return value, instead
blindly assuming data was successfully sent. In most cases
this will lead to silent data loss on interactive consoles,
but in some cases (eg RNG EGD) it'll just cause corruption
of the protocol being spoken.
We unfortunately can't fix the virtio-console code, due to
a bug in the Linux guest drivers, which would cause the
entire Linux kernel to hang if we delay processing of the
incoming data in any way. Fixing this requires first fixing
the guest driver to not hold spinlocks while writing to the
hvc device backend.

The msmouse chardev backend writes data without checking whenever there
is enough space.
That happens to work with linux guests, probably by pure luck because
the linux driver enables the fifo and the serial port emulation accepts
more data than announced via qemu_chr_be_can_write() in that case.
Handle this properly by adding a buffer to MouseState. Hook up a
CharDriverState->accept_input() handler which feeds the buffer to the
serial port. msmouse_event() only fills the buffer now, and calls the
accept_input handler too to kick off the transmission.

NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

Simple unions were carrying a special case that hid their 'data'
QMP member from the resulting C struct, via the hack method
QAPISchemaObjectTypeVariant.simple_union_type(). But by using
the work we started by unboxing flat union and alternate
branches, coupled with the ability to visit the members of an
implicit type, we can now expose the simple union's implicit
type in qapi-types.h:
| struct q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificQCow2_wrapper {
| ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 *data;
| };
|
| struct q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificVmdk_wrapper {
| ImageInfoSpecificVmdk *data;
| };
...
| struct ImageInfoSpecific {
| ImageInfoSpecificKind type;
| union { /* union tag is @type */
| void *data;
|- ImageInfoSpecificQCow2 *qcow2;
|- ImageInfoSpecificVmdk *vmdk;
|+ q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificQCow2_wrapper qcow2;
|+ q_obj_ImageInfoSpecificVmdk_wrapper vmdk;
| } u;
| };
Doing this removes asymmetry between QAPI's QMP side and its
C side (both sides now expose 'data'), and means that the
treatment of a simple union as sugar for a flat union is now
equivalent in both languages (previously the two approaches used
a different layer of dereferencing, where the simple union could
be converted to a flat union with equivalent C layout but
different {} on the wire, or to an equivalent QMP wire form
but with different C representation). Using the implicit type
also lets us get rid of the simple_union_type() hack.
Of course, now all clients of simple unions have to adjust from
using su->u.member to using su->u.member.data; while this touches
a number of files in the tree, some earlier cleanup patches
helped minimize the change to the initialization of a temporary
variable rather than every single member access. The generated
qapi-visit.c code is also affected by the layout change:

Requests are now created in the RngBackend parent class and the
code path is shared by both rng-egd and rng-random.
This commit fixes the rng-random implementation which processed
only one request at a time and simply discarded all but the most
recent one. In the guest this manifested as delayed completion
of reads from virtio-rng, i.e. a read was completed only after
another read was issued.
By switching rng-random to use the same request queue as rng-egd,
the unsafe stack-based allocation of the entropy buffer is

JSON uses "name":value, but many of our visitor interfaces were
called with visit_type_FOO(v, &value, name, errp). This can be
a bit confusing to have to mentally swap the parameter order to
match JSON order. It's particularly bad for visit_start_struct(),
where the 'name' parameter is smack in the middle of the
otherwise-related group of 'obj, kind, size' parameters! It's
time to do a global swap of the parameter ordering, so that the
'name' parameter is always immediately after the Visitor argument.
Additional reason in favor of the swap: the existing include/qjson.h
prefers listing 'name' first in json_prop_*(), and I have plans to
unify that file with the qapi visitors; listing 'name' first in
qapi will minimize churn to the (admittedly few) qjson.h clients.
Later patches will then fix docs, object.h, visitor-impl.h, and
those clients to match.
Done by first patching scripts/qapi*.py by hand to make generated
files do what I want, then by running the following Coccinelle
script to affect the rest of the code base:
$ spatch --sp-file script `git grep -l '\bvisit_' -- '**/*.[ch]'`
I then had to apply some touchups (Coccinelle insisted on TAB
indentation in visitor.h, and botched the signature of
visit_type_enum() by rewriting 'const char *const strings[]' to
the syntactically invalid 'const char*const[] strings'). The
movement of parameters is sufficient to provoke compiler errors
if any callers were missed.

Typically a UNIX guest OS will log boot messages to a serial
port in addition to any graphical console. An admin user
may also wish to use the serial port for an interactive
console. A virtualization management system may wish to
collect system boot messages by logging the serial port,
but also wish to allow admins interactive access.
Currently providing such a feature forces the mgmt app
to either provide 2 separate serial ports, one for
logging boot messages and one for interactive console
login, or to proxy all output via a separate service
that can multiplex the two needs onto one serial port.
While both are valid approaches, they each have their
own downsides. The former causes confusion and extra
setup work for VM admins creating disk images. The latter
places an extra burden to re-implement much of the QEMU
chardev backends logic in libvirt or even higher level
mgmt apps and adds extra hops in the data transfer path.
A simpler approach that is satisfactory for many use
cases is to allow the QEMU chardev backends to have a
"logfile" property associated with them.
$QEMU -chardev socket,host=localhost,port=9000,\
server=on,nowait,id-charserial0,\
logfile=/var/log/libvirt/qemu/test-serial0.log
-device isa-serial,chardev=charserial0,id=serial0
This patch introduces a 'ChardevCommon' struct which
is setup as a base for all the ChardevBackend types.
Ideally this would be registered directly as a base
against ChardevBackend, rather than each type, but
the QAPI generator doesn't allow that since the
ChardevBackend is a non-discriminated union. The
ChardevCommon struct provides the optional 'logfile'
parameter, as well as 'logappend' which controls
whether QEMU truncates or appends (default truncate).

Currently hostmem backend fails if CONFIG_NUMA is enabled in QEMU
(the default) but NUMA is not supported by the kernel. This makes
it impossible to use ivshmem in such configurations.
This patch fixes the problem by ignoring ENOSYS error if policy is set to
MPOL_DEFAULT. This way the code behaves in the same way as if CONFIG_NUMA
was not defined. qemu will still fail if the user specifies some other
policy, so that the user knows it.

Having creation as a member of the CharDriver struct removes the need
to export functions for qemu-char.c's usage. After the conversion,
chardev backends implemented outside qemu-char.c will not need a stub

Ultimately all drivers will be converted. For now, support the case

g_new(T, n) is neater than g_malloc(sizeof(T) * n). It's also safer,
for two reasons. One, it catches multiplication overflowing size_t.
Two, it returns T * rather than void *, which lets the compiler catch
more type errors.
This commit only touches allocations with size arguments of the form
sizeof(T). Same Coccinelle semantic patch as in commit b45c03f.

chr-testdev enables a virtio serial channel to be used for guest
initiated qemu exits. hw/misc/debugexit already enables guest
initiated qemu exits, but only for PC targets. chr-testdev supports
any virtio-capable target. kvm-unit-tests/arm is already making use

Currently there is a single command implemented, "q". It takes a

It can be used as:
$QEMU ... \

or, use:

Using error_is_set(ERRP) to find out whether a function failed is
either wrong, fragile, or unnecessarily opaque. It's wrong when ERRP
may be null, because errors go undetected when it is. It's fragile
when proving ERRP non-null involves a non-local argument. Else, it's
unnecessarily opaque (see commit 84d18f0).
I guess the error_is_set(errp) in the ObjectProperty set() methods are
merely fragile right now, because I can't find a call chain that
passes a null errp argument.

We didn't set default chr_name, the free is redundant.

When CHR_EVENT_OPENED was initially added, it was CHR_EVENT_RESET,
and it was issued as a bottom-half:
86e94dea5b
Which we basically used to print out a greeting/prompt for the
monitor.
AFAICT the only reason this was ever done in a BH was because in
some cases we'd modify the chr_write handler for a new chardev
backend *after* the site where we issued the reset (see:
86e94d:qemu_chr_open_stdio())
At some point this event was renamed to CHR_EVENT_OPENED, and we've
maintained the use of this BH ever since.
However, due to 9f939df955, we schedule
the BH via g_idle_add(), which is causing events to sometimes be
delivered after we've already begun processing data from backends,
leading to:
known bugs:
QMP:
session negotation resets with OPENED event, in some cases this
is causing new sessions to get sporadically reset
potential bugs:
hw/usb/redirect.c:
can_read handler checks for dev->parser != NULL, which may be
true if CLOSED BH has not been executed yet. In the past, OPENED
quiesced outstanding CLOSED events prior to us reading client
data. If it's delayed, our check may allow reads to occur even
though we haven't processed the OPENED event yet, and when we
do finally get the OPENED event, our state may get reset.
qtest.c:
can begin session before OPENED event is processed, leading to
a spurious reset of the system and irq_levels
gdbstub.c:
may start a gdb session prior to the machine being paused
To fix these, let's just drop the BH.
Since the initial reasoning for using it still applies to an extent,
work around that by deferring the delivery of CHR_EVENT_OPENED until
after the chardevs have been fully initialized, toward the end of
qmp_chardev_add() (or some cases, qemu_chr_new_from_opts()). This
defers delivery long enough that we can be assured a CharDriverState
is fully initialized before CHR_EVENT_OPENED is sent.
Also, rather than requiring each chardev to do an explicit open, do it
automatically, and allow the small few who don't desire such behavior to
suppress the OPENED-on-init behavior by setting a 'explicit_be_open'
flag.
We additionally add missing OPENED events for stdio backends on w32,
which were previously not being issued, causing us to not recieve the
banner and initial prompts for qmp/hmp.

Not handling EAGAIN triggers the assert

This happens when starting a guest with '-device virtio-rng-pci',
issuing a 'cat /dev/hwrng' in the guest, while also doing 'cat

The TPM subsystem does not have a full front-end/back-end separation.
The sole available backend, tpm_passthrough, depends on the data
structures of the sole available frontend, tpm_tis.
However, we can at least try to split the user interface (tpm.c) from the
implementation (hw/tpm). The patches makes tpm.c not include tpm_int.h,
which is shared between tpm_tis.c and tpm_passthrough.c; instead it
moves more stuff to tpm_backend.h.

chardev-frontends need to explictly check, increase and decrement the
avail_connections "property" of the chardev when they are not using a
qdev-chardev-property for the chardev.
This fixes things like:
qemu-kvm -chardev stdio,id=foo -device isa-serial,chardev=foo \
-mon chardev=foo
Working, where they should fail. Most of the changes here are due to
old hardware emulation code which is using serial_hds directly rather then
a qdev-chardev-property.

Since 39bffca203 (qdev: register all
types natively through QEMU Object Model), TypeInfo as used in
the common, non-iterative pattern is no longer amended with information
and should therefore be const.
Fix the documented QOM examples:
sed -i 's/static TypeInfo/static const TypeInfo/g' include/qom/object.h
Since frequently the wrong examples are being copied by contributors of
new devices, fix all types in the tree:
sed -i 's/^static TypeInfo/static const TypeInfo/g' */*.c
sed -i 's/^static TypeInfo/static const TypeInfo/g' */*/*.c
This also avoids to piggy-back these changes onto real functional
changes or other refactorings.

This backend talks EGD to a CharDriverState. A typical way to invoke this would
be:
qemu -chardev socket,host=localhost,port=1024,id=chr0 \
-object rng-egd,chardev=chr0,id=egd0 \
-device virtio-rng-pci,rng=egd0

The filename can be overridden but it expects a non-blocking source of entropy.
A typical invocation would be:
qemu -object rng-random,id=rng0 -device virtio-rng-pci,rng=rng0
This can also be used with /dev/urandom by using the command line:
qemu -object rng-random,filename=/dev/urandom,id=rng0 \
-device virtio-rng-pci,rng=rng0
