Create an index page for migration module. Move VFIO migration there too.
A trivial touch-up on the title to use lower case there.
Since then we'll have "migration" as the top title, make the main doc file
renamed to "migration framework".

Migration documentation is growing into a single file too large. Create a
sub-directory for it for a split.
We also already have separate vfio/virtio documentations, move it all over
into the directory.
Note that the virtio one is still not yet converted to rST. That is a job
for later.

We don't currently document the syntax of .hx files anywhere
except in a few comments at the top of individual .hx files.
We don't even have somewhere in the developer docs where we
could do this.
Add a new files docs/devel/docs.rst which can be a place to
document how our docs build process works. For the moment,
put in only a brief introductory paragraph and the documentation
of the .hx files. We could later add to this file by for
example describing how the QAPI-schema-to-docs process works,
or anything else that developers might need to know about
how to add documentation.
Make the .hx files refer to this doc file, and clean
up their header comments to be more accurate for the
usage in each file and less cut-n-pasted.

CONFIG_ALL is tricky to use and was ported over to Meson from the
recursive processing of Makefile variables. Meson sourcesets
however have all_sources() and all_dependencies() methods that
remove the need for it.

One problem with flaky tests is they often only fail under CI
conditions which makes it hard to debug. We add an optional allow_fail
job so developers can trigger the only the flaky tests in the CI
environment if they are debugging.

It doesn't make sense to have two classes of flaky tests. While it may
take the constrained environment of CI to trigger failures easily it
doesn't mean they don't occasionally happen on developer machines. As
CI is the gating factor to passing there is no point developers
running the tests locally anyway unless they are trying to fix things.
While we are at it update the language in the docs to discourage the
QEMU_TEST_FLAKY_TESTS becoming a permanent solution.

From s390_possible_cpu_arch_ids() in hw/s390x/s390-virtio-ccw.c, the
"core-id" is the index of possible_cpus->cpus[], so it should only be
less than possible_cpus->len, which is equal to ms->smp.max_cpus.
Fix the wrong "core-id" 112, because it isn't less than maxcpus (36) in
-smp, and the valid core ids are 0-35 inclusive.

In cpu_exec_step_atomic, we did not set CF_LAST_IO, which lead
to a loop with cpu_io_recompile.
But since 18a536f1f8 ("Always require can_do_io") we no longer
need a flag to indicate when the last insn should have can_do_io set,
so remove the flag entirely.

This patch modifies pci_setup_iommu() to set PCIIOMMUOps
instead of setting PCIIOMMUFunc. PCIIOMMUFunc is used to
get an address space for a PCI device in vendor specific
way. The PCIIOMMUOps still offers this functionality. But
using PCIIOMMUOps leaves space to add more iommu related
vendor specific operations.

When we detect that we have broken backwards compatibility in a
released version, we can't do anything for that version. But once we
fix that bug on the next released version, we can "mitigate" that
problem when migrating to new versions to give a way out of that
machine until it does a hard reboot.

Use a shorter name. We are going to move in iotests from qmp() to
command() where possible. But command() is longer than qmp() and don't
look better. Let's rename.
You can simply grep for '\.command(' and for 'def command(' to check
that everything is updated (command() in tests/docker/docker.py is

The loads-and-stores documentation includes git grep regexes to find
occurrences of the various functions. Some of these regexes have
errors, typically failing to escape the '?', '(' and ')' when they
should be metacharacters (since these are POSIX basic REs). We also
weren't consistent about whether to have a ':' on the end of the
line introducing the list of regexes in each section.
Fix the errors.
The following shell rune will complain about any REs in the
file which don't have any matches in the codebase:

"-mem-path" corresponds to "memory-backend-file,share=off" and,
therefore, creates a private COW mapping of the file. For multi-proces
QEMU, we need proper shared file-backed memory.

VFIO migration uAPI defines an optional intermediate P2P quiescent
state. While in the P2P quiescent state, P2P DMA transactions cannot be
initiated by the device, but the device can respond to incoming ones.
Additionally, all outstanding P2P transactions are guaranteed to have
been completed by the time the device enters this state.
The purpose of this state is to support migration of multiple devices
that might do P2P transactions between themselves.
Add support for P2P migration by transitioning all the devices to the
P2P quiescent state before stopping or starting the devices. Use the new
VMChangeStateHandler prepare_cb to achieve that behavior.
This will allow migration of multiple VFIO devices if all of them
support P2P migration.

There are no config-host.mak symbols anymore that are needed in
config-host.h; the only symbols that are included in config_host_data via
the foreach loop are:
- CONFIG_DEFAULT_TARGETS, which is not used by C code.
- CONFIG_TCG and CONFIG_TCG_INTERPRETER, which are not part of config-host.mak
So, list these two symbols explicitly.

I've already wasted enough of my time debugging aliased variables in
deeply nested loops. While not scattering variable declarations around
is a good aim I think we can make an exception for stuff used inside a
loop.

The `ccache` tool can be very effective at reducing compilation times
when re-running pipelines with only minor changes each time. For example
a fresh 'build-system-fedora' job will typically take 20 minutes on the
gitlab.com shared runners. With ccache this is reduced to as little as
6 minutes.
Normally meson would auto-detect existance of ccache in $PATH and use
it automatically, but the way we wrap meson from configure breaks this,
as we're passing in an config file with explicitly set compiler paths.
Thus we need to add $CCACHE_WRAPPERSPATH to the front of $PATH. For
unknown reasons if doing this in msys though, gcc becomes unable to
invoke 'cc1' when run from meson. For msys we thus set CC='ccache gcc'
before invoking 'configure' instead.
A second problem with msys is that cache misses are incredibly
expensive, so enabling ccache massively slows down the build when
the cache isn't well populated. This is suspected to be a result of
the cost of spawning processes under the msys architecture. To deal
with this we set CCACHE_DEPEND=1 which enables ccache's 'depend_only'
strategy. This avoids extra spawning of the pre-processor during
cache misses, with the downside that is it less likely ccache will
find a cache hit after semantically benign compiler flag changes.
This is the lesser of two evils, as otherwise we can't use ccache
at all under msys and remain inside the job time limit.
If people are finding ccache to hurt their pipelines, it can be
disabled by setting the 'CCACHE_DISABLE=1' env variable against
their gitlab fork CI settings.

ensuregroup allows to specify both the acceptable versions of avocado,
and a locked version to be used when avocado is not installed as a system
pacakge. This lets us install avocado in pyvenv/ using "mkvenv.py" and
reuse the distro package on Fedora and CentOS Stream (the only distros
where it's available).
ensuregroup's usage of "(>=..., <=...)" constraints when evaluating
the distro package, and "==" constraints when installing it from PyPI,
makes it possible to avoid conflicts between the known-good version and
a package plugins included in the distro.
This is because package plugins have "==" constraints on the version
that is included in the distro, and, using "pip install avocado==88.1"
on a venv that includes system packages will result in an error:
avocado-framework-plugin-varianter-yaml-to-mux 98.0 requires avocado-framework==98.0, but you have avocado-framework 88.1 which is incompatible.
avocado-framework-plugin-result-html 98.0 requires avocado-framework==98.0, but you have avocado-framework 88.1 which is incompatible.
But at the same time, if the venv does not include a system distribution
of avocado then we can install a known-good version and stick to LTS
releases.

We have postcopy recovery but not reflected in the document, do an update
for that.
Add a very small section on postcopy preempt.
Touch up the pagemap section, dropping the unsent map because it's already
been dropped in the source code in commit 1e7cf8c323 ("migration/postcopy:
unsentmap is not necessary for postcopy").
Touch up the postcopy section to remove "network connection" failures as
downside, because now it's not fatal and can be recovered. Suggested by
Laszlo.

When new dependencies and packages are added to containers, its important to
run CI container generation pipelines on gitlab to make sure that there are no
obvious conflicts between packages that are being added and those that are
already present. Running CI container pipelines will make sure that there are
no such breakages before we commit the change updating the containers. Add a
line in the documentation reminding developers to run the pipeline before
submitting the change. It will also ease the life of the maintainers.

Loading of a VFIO device's data can take a substantial amount of time as
the device may need to allocate resources, prepare internal data
structures, etc. This can increase migration downtime, especially for
VFIO devices with a lot of resources.
To solve this, VFIO migration uAPI defines "initial bytes" as part of
its precopy data stream. Initial bytes can be used in various ways to
improve VFIO migration performance. For example, it can be used to
transfer device metadata to pre-allocate resources in the destination.
However, for this to work we need to make sure that all initial bytes
are sent and loaded in the destination before the source VM is stopped.
Use migration switchover ack capability to make sure a VFIO device's
initial bytes are sent and loaded in the destination before the source
stops the VM and attempts to complete the migration.
This can significantly reduce migration downtime for some devices.

Pre-copy support allows the VFIO device data to be transferred while the
VM is running. This helps to accommodate VFIO devices that have a large
amount of data that needs to be transferred, and it can reduce migration
downtime.
Pre-copy support is optional in VFIO migration protocol v2.
Implement pre-copy of VFIO migration protocol v2 and use it for devices
that support it. Full description of it can be found in the following
Linux commit: 4db52602a607 ("vfio: Extend the device migration protocol
with PRE_COPY").

The CI rules have special logic for what happens in upstream. To enable
contributors who modify CI rules to test this logic, however, they need
to be able to override which repo is considered upstream. This
introduces the 'QEMU_CI_UPSTREAM' variable
git push gitlab <branch> -o ci.variable=QEMU_CI_UPSTREAM=berrange
to make it look as if my namespace is the actual upstream. Namespace in
this context refers to the path fragment in gitlab URLs that is above
the repository. Typically this will be the contributor's gitlab login
name.

We use a fixed container tag of 'latest' so that contributors' forks
don't end up with an ever growing number of containers as they work
on throwaway feature branches.
This fixed tag causes problems running CI upstream in stable staging
branches, however, because the stable staging branch will publish old
container content that clashes with that needed by primary staging
branch. This makes it impossible to reliably run CI pipelines in
parallel in upstream for different staging branches.
This introduces $QEMU_CI_CONTAINER_TAG global variable as a way to
change which tag container publishing uses. Initially it can be set
by contributors as a git push option if they want to override the
default use of 'latest' eg
git push gitlab <branch> -o ci.variable=QEMU_CONTAINER_TAG=fish
this is useful if contributors need to run pipelines for different
branches concurrently in their forks.

CXL has 24 bit unaligned fields which need to be stored to. CXL is
specified as little endian.
Define st24_le_p() and the supporting functions to store such a field
from a 32 bit host native value.
The use of b, w, l, q as the size specifier is limiting. So "24" was
used for the size part of the function name.

We use the user_ss[] array to hold the user emulation sources,
and the softmmu_ss[] array to hold the system emulation ones.
Hold the latter in the 'system_ss[]' array for parity with user
emulation.

Right now, there is a conflict between wanting a ">=" constraint when
using a distro-provided package and wanting a "==" constraint when
installing Avocado from PyPI; this would provide the best of both worlds
in terms of resiliency for both distros that have required packages and
distros that don't.
The conflict is visible also for meson, where we would like to install
the latest 0.63.x version but also accept a distro 1.1.x version.
But it is worse for avocado, for two reasons:
1) we cannot use an "==" constraint to install avocado if the venv
includes a system avocado. The distro will package plugins that have
"==" constraints on the version that is included in the distro, and, using
"pip install avocado==88.1" on a venv that includes system packages will
result in this error:
ERROR: pip's dependency resolver does not currently take into account all the packages that are installed. This behaviour is the source of the following dependency conflicts.
avocado-framework-plugin-varianter-yaml-to-mux 98.0 requires avocado-framework==98.0, but you have avocado-framework 88.1 which is incompatible.

qatomic_mb_read and qatomic_mb_set were the very first atomic primitives
introduced for QEMU; their semantics are unclear and they provide a false
sense of safety.
The last use of qatomic_mb_read() has been removed, so delete it.
qatomic_mb_set() instead can survive as an optimized
qatomic_set()+smp_mb(), similar to Linux's smp_store_mb(), but
rename it to qatomic_set_mb() to match the order of the two
operations.

Document the named field syntax that we want to implement for the
decodetree script. This allows a field to be defined in terms of
some other field that the instruction pattern has already set, for
example:

to allow a function to be passed both an immediate field from the
instruction and also a sz value which might have been specified by
the instruction pattern directly (sz=1, etc) rather than being a
simple field within the instruction.
Note that the restriction on not having the format referring to the
pattern and the pattern referring to the format simultaneously is a

Notable points about the conversion:
* numbers at the start of section headings are removed, to match
the style of the rest of the manual

configure is only doing compiler and host setup now, so adjust the
relevant documentation. It is also possible to build emulators with
ninja directly if one is so inclined, so mention that as well.
The Python virtual environment set up is a new major task of configure
as well. Mention it in the list of produced files, while leaving it
for a future patch to document how it works and how ``mkvenv ensure``
is used.

This patch changes how the avocado tests are provided, ever so

When new dependencies and packages are added to containers, its important to
run CI container generation pipelines on gitlab to make sure that there are no
obvious conflicts between packages that are being added and those that are
already present. Running CI container pipelines will make sure that there are
no such breakages before we commit the change updating the containers. Add a
line in the documentation reminding developers to run the pipeline before
submitting the change. It will also ease the life of the maintainers.

The QAPI schema doc comment language provides special syntax for
command and event arguments, struct and union members, alternate
branches, enumeration values, and features: descriptions starting with
"@name:".
By convention, we format them like this:

Okay for names as short as "name", but we have much longer ones. Their
description gets squeezed against the right margin, like this:

The description text is effectively just 50 characters wide. Easy
enough to read, but can be cumbersome to write.
The awkward squeeze against the right margin makes people go beyond it,
which produces two undesirables: arguments about style, and descriptions
that are unnecessarily hard to read, like this one:

To get this, we need to let the first non-blank line after the
"@name:" line determine expected indentation.
This fills up the indentation pitfall mentioned in
docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.rst. A related pitfall still exists. Update
the text to show it.

QAPI doc comments are for QMP users: they go into the "QEMU QMP
Reference Manual" and the "QEMU Storage Daemon QMP Reference Manual".
The doc comment TODO sections are for somebody else, namely for the
people who can do: developers. Do not emit them into the user
manuals.
This elides the following TODOs:

This is a note to developers adding introspection to the guest
agent. It makes no sense to users.

We have two FIXME notes. These FIXMEs are for QAPI developers. They
are not useful for QAPI schema developers. They are marked up as
admonitions, which makes them look important in generated HTML.
Turn them into comments. QAPI developers will still see them (they
read and write the .rst). QAPI schema developers may still see
them (if they read the .rst instead of the generated .html), but "this
is just for QAPI developers" should be more obvious.

Peter Maydell's commit 100cc4fe0f explains:
rST insists on a blank line before and after a bulleted list [...]
Add some extra blank lines in the doc comments so they're
acceptable rST input.
It missed one in qapi/trace.json.
Paolo Bonzini later added another instance in qapi/stats.json,
providing further, if unintended, evidence for his quip that rST is
the Perl of ASCII-based markups.
Both are parsed as ordinary paragraph, resulting in garbled output.
John Snow missed the need for a blank line when converting
docs/devel/qapi-code-gen.txt to rST.
Add the blank lines we need to get the bullet lists recognized as
such.
Kevin Wolf and Lukas Straub added two more, but indented. Sphinx
recognizes them as (indented) bullet lists. The indentation looks
slightly off.
Insert a blank line and delete the extra indentation.

Devices can pass their MemoryReentrancyGuard (from their DeviceState),
when creating new BHes. Then, the async API will toggle the guard
before/after calling the BH call-back. This prevents bh->mmio reentrancy

Ugly. Calls become similarly ugly. Not worth fixing.
Conditional arguments work fine with 'boxed': true, simply because
complex types with conditional members work fine. Not worth breaking.
Reject conditional arguments unless boxed.
Move the tests cases covering unboxed conditional arguments out of
tests/qapi-schema/qapi-schema-test.json. Cover boxed conditional
arguments there instead.

In rST markup syntax, the inline markup (*italics*, **bold** and
``monospaced``) must be separated from the surrending text by
non-word characters, otherwise it is not interpreted as markup.
To force interpretation as markup in the middle of a word,
you need to use a backslash-escaped space (which will not
appear as a space in the output).
Fix a missing backslash-space in this file, which meant that the ``
after "select" was output literally and the monospacing was
incorrectly extended all the way to the end of the next monospaced
word.

The documentation for smp_read_barrier_depends() does not mention the architectures
for which it is an optimization, for example ARM and PPC. As a result, it is not
clear to the reader why one would use it. Relegate Alpha to a footnote together

On ARM, seqcst loads and stores (which QEMU does not use) are compiled
respectively as LDAR and STLR instructions. Even though LDAR is
also used for load-acquire operations, it also waits for all STLRs to
leave the store buffer. Thus, LDAR and STLR alone are load-acquire
and store-release operations, but LDAR also provides store-against-load
ordering as long as the previous store is a STLR.
Compare this to ARMv7, where store-release is DMB+STR and load-acquire
is LDR+DMB, but an additional DMB is needed between store-seqcst and
load-seqcst (e.g. DMB+STR+DMB+LDR+DMB); or with x86, where MOV provides
load-acquire and store-release semantics and the two can be reordered.
Likewise, on ARM sequentially consistent read-modify-write operations only
need to use LDAXR and STLXR respectively for the load and the store, while
on x86 they need to use the stronger LOCK prefix.
In a strange twist of events, however, the _stronger_ semantics
of the ARM instructions can end up causing bugs on ARM, not on x86.
The problems occur when seqcst atomics are mixed with relaxed atomics.
QEMU's atomics try to bridge the Linux API (that most of the developers
are familiar with) and the C11 API, and the two have a substantial
difference:
- in Linux, strongly-ordered atomics such as atomic_add_return() affect
the global ordering of _all_ memory operations, including for example
READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE()
- in C11, sequentially consistent atomics (except for seq-cst fences)
only affect the ordering of sequentially consistent operations.
In particular, since relaxed loads are done with LDR on ARM, they are
not ordered against seqcst stores (which are done with STLR).
QEMU implements high-level synchronization primitives with the idea that
the primitives contain the necessary memory barriers, and the callers can
use relaxed atomics (qatomic_read/qatomic_set) or even regular accesses.
This is very much incompatible with the C11 view that seqcst accesses
are only ordered against other seqcst accesses, and requires using seqcst
fences as in the following example:

When a qatomic_*() read-modify write operation is used instead of one
or both stores, developers that are more familiar with the Linux API may
be tempted to omit the smp_mb(), which will work on x86 but not on ARM.
This nasty difference between Linux and C11 read-modify-write operations
has already caused issues in util/async.c and more are being found.
Provide something similar to Linux smp_mb__before/after_atomic(); this
has the double function of documenting clearly why there is a memory
barrier, and avoiding a double barrier on x86 and s390x systems.
The new macro can already be put to use in qatomic_mb_set().

The 22.04 LTS release has been out for almost a year now so its time
to update all the remaining images to the current LTS. We can also
drop some hacks we need for older clang TSAN support.
We will keep the ubuntu2004 container around for those who wish to
test builds on the currently still supported baseline.

version that supports overrides for targets and package mappings;

Shorten a bit the description of what libvirt-ci does, the name of the
data files is not relevant at that point. However, the procedures to add
new build prerequisites are lacking some information, particularly with
respect to regenerating the output test files for lcitool's unit tests.
While at it, also update the paths in the libvirt-ci repository.

When qemu-keymap is not available on the host, and enable-xkbcommon
is specified, parallel make fails with:

The code always runs find_program, rather than waiting to build
qemu-keymap, because it looks for CONFIG_XKBCOMMON in config_host
rather than config_host_data. Making serially succeeds, by soft
linking files from pc-bios/keymaps, but that is not the desired
result for enable-xkbcommon.
Examining all occurrences of 'in config_host' for similar bugs shows one
instance in the docs, which is also fixed here.

We split the function into to:
- state_pending_estimate: We estimate the remaining state size without
stopping the machine.
- state pending_exact: We calculate the exact amount of remaining
state.
The only "device" that implements different functions for _estimate()
and _exact() is ram.

Add ability to dump /tmp/perf-<pid>.map and jit-<pid>.dump.
The first one allows the perf tool to map samples to each individual
translation block. The second one adds the ability to resolve symbol
names, line numbers and inspect JITed code.
Example of use:
perf record qemu-x86_64 -perfmap ./a.out
perf report
or
perf record -k 1 qemu-x86_64 -jitdump ./a.out

Convert tcg/README to rst and move it to docs/devel as a new "TCG Intermediate
Representation" page. There are a few minor changes to improve the aesthetic
of the final output which are as follows:
- Rename the title from "Tiny Code Generator - Fabrice Bellard" to "TCG
Intermediate Representation"
- Remove the section numbering
- Add the missing parameters to the ssadd_vec operations in the "Host
vector operations" section
- Change the path to the Atomic Operations document to use a proper
reference
- Replace tcg/README in tcg.rst with a proper reference to the new document

This new annotation starts just a function wrapper that creates
a new coroutine. It assumes the caller is not a coroutine.
It will be the default annotation to be used in the future.
This is much better as c_w_mixed, because it is clear if the caller
is a coroutine or not, and provides the advantage of automating
the code creation. In the future all c_w_mixed functions will be
substituted by co_wrapper.

In QAPI, absent optional members are distinct from any present value.
We thus represent an optional schema member FOO as two C members: a
FOO with the member's type, and a bool has_FOO. Likewise for function
arguments.
However, has_FOO is actually redundant for a pointer-valued FOO, which
can be null only when has_FOO is false, i.e. has_FOO == !!FOO. Except
for arrays, where we a null FOO can also be a present empty array.
The redundant has_FOO are a nuisance to work with. Improve the
generator to elide them. Uses of has_FOO need to be replaced as
follows.
Tests of has_FOO become the equivalent comparison of FOO with null.
For brevity, this is commonly done by implicit conversion to bool.
Assignments to has_FOO get dropped.
Likewise for arguments to has_FOO parameters.
Beware: code may violate the invariant has_FOO == !!FOO before the
transformation, and get away with it. The above transformation can
then break things. Two cases:
* Absent: if code ignores FOO entirely when !has_FOO (except for
freeing it if necessary), even non-null / uninitialized FOO works.
Such code is known to exist.
* Present: if code ignores FOO entirely when has_FOO, even null FOO
works. Such code should not exist.
In both cases, replacing tests of has_FOO by FOO reverts their sense.
We have to fix the value of FOO then.
To facilitate review of the necessary updates to handwritten code, add
means to opt out of this change, and opt out for all QAPI schema
modules where the change requires updates to handwritten code. The
next few commits will remove these opt-outs in reviewable chunks, then
drop the means to opt out.

The code for handling the reset level count in the Resettable code
has two issues:
The reset count is only decremented for the 1->0 case. This means
that if there's ever a nested reset that takes the count to 2 then it
will never again be decremented. Eventually the count will exceed
the '50' limit in resettable_phase_enter() and QEMU will trip over
the assertion failure. The repro case in issue 1266 is an example of
this that happens now the SCSI subsystem uses three-phase reset.
Secondly, the count is decremented only after the exit phase handler
is called. Moving the reset count decrement from "just after" to
"just before" calling the exit phase handler allows
resettable_is_in_reset() to return false during the handler
execution.
This simplifies reset handling in resettable devices. Typically, a
function that updates the device state will just need to read the
current reset state and not anymore treat the "in a reset-exit
transition" as a special case.
Note that the semantics change to the *_is_in_reset() functions
will have no effect on the current codebase, because only two
devices (hw/char/cadence_uart.c and hw/misc/zynq_sclr.c) currently
call those functions, and in neither case do they do it from the
device's exit phase methed.

This helps us construct strings elsewhere before echoing to the
monitor. It avoids having to jump through hoops like:
monitor_printf(mon, "%s", s->str);
It will be useful in following patches but for now convert all
existing plain "%s" printfs to use the _puts api.
