This adds RISC-V into the build system enabling the following targets:
- riscv32-softmmu
- riscv64-softmmu
- riscv32-linux-user
- riscv64-linux-user
This adds defaults configs for RISC-V, enables the build for the RISC-V
CPU core, hardware, and Linux User Emulation. The 'qemu-binfmt-conf.sh'
script is updated to add the RISC-V ELF magic.

This layer is composed of two sub-modules, backend and resource manager.
Backend sub-module is responsible for all the interaction with IB layers
such as ibverbs and umad (external libraries).
Resource manager is a collection of functions and structures to manage

Check for the presence of posix_memalign() in the configure script,
not using "defined(_POSIX_C_SOURCE) && !defined(__sun__)". This
lets qemu use posix_memalign() on NetBSD versions that have it,
instead of falling back to valloc() which is wasteful when the
required alignment is smaller than a page.

In alpine docker image the qemu-system-s390x build is broken and
it throws this error:
qemu-system-s390x: Initialization of device s390-ipl failed: could not
load bootloader 's390-ccw.img'
The grep command of busybox uses regex. This fails on binary data
(e.g. stops on every \0), so it does not identify the string
BiGeNdIaN in the test case big/little. Therefore, it assumes
that the architecture is little endian.
This fix solves the grep problem by printing the content of
TMPO with strings

UBSan shouldn't have much impact on runtime cost.

We dropped support for ia64 host CPUs in the 2.11 release (removing
the TCG backend for it, and advertising the support as being
completely removed in the changelog). However there are a few bits
and pieces of code still floating about. Remove those, too.
We can drop the check in configure for "ia64 or hppa host?"
entirely, because we don't support hppa hosts either any more.

This dependency is required for adequate Parallels images support.
Typically the disk consists of several images which are glued by
XML disk descriptor. Also XML hides inside several important parameters
which are not available in the image header.
The patch also adds clause to checkpatch.pl to understand libxml2 types.

When --enable-debug is turned on, configure doesn't set -O level, and
uses default compiler -O0 level, which is slow.
Instead, use -Og if supported by the compiler (optimize debugging
experience), or -O1 (keeps code somewhat debuggable and works around
compiler bugs).
Unfortunately, gcc has many false-positive maybe-uninitialized

When linking qemu-ga under some configuration (when gthread-2.0.pc
doesn't have -pthread, as happening atm with meson build), you may
have this linking issue:
/usr/bin/ld: libqemuutil.a(qemu-thread-posix.o): undefined reference to symbol 'pthread_setname_np@@GLIBC_2.12'
/usr/lib64/libpthread.so.0: error adding symbols: DSO missing from command line
Make sure qemu-ga links with the pthread library, by adding correct
flags to libs_qga.
This is really a QEMU bug, because it's QEMU code that's using pthread
functions, and so we must explicitly link against pthreads. The bug
was just masked by the fact that often some pkg-config or another for
one of our dependencies will add -pthread to the link line anyway.

In commit c97d6d2cdf we accidentally added code to configure
that uses '==' for string equality testing. This is a bashism --
the portable way to write this is '='.
This fixes the "Unexpected operator error" complaint produced
if the system /bin/sh is dash.

This file begins tracking the files that will be the code base for HVF
support in QEMU. This code base is part of Google's QEMU version of
their Android emulator, and can be found at

This code is based on Veertu Inc's vdhh (Veertu Desktop Hosted
Hypervisor), found at https://github.com/veertuinc/vdhh. Everything is
appropriately licensed under GPL v2-or-later, except for the code inside
x86_task.c and x86_task.h, which, deriving from KVM (the Linux kernel),
is licensed GPL v2-only.
This code base already implements a very great deal of functionality,
although Google's version removed from Vertuu's the support for APIC
page and hyperv-related stuff. According to the Android Emulator Release
Notes, Revision 26.1.3 (August 2017), "Hypervisor.framework is now
enabled by default on macOS for 32-bit x86 images to improve performance
and macOS compatibility", although we better use with caution for, as the
same Revision warns us, "If you experience issues with it specifically,
please file a bug report...". The code hasn't seen much update in the
last 5 months, so I think that we can further develop the code with
occasional visiting Google's repository to see if there has been any
update.
On top of Google's code, the following changes were made:
- add code to the configure script to support the --enable-hvf argument.
If the OS is Darwin, it checks for presence of HVF in the system. The
patch also adds strings related to HVF in the file qemu-options.hx.
QEMU will only support the modern syntax style '-M accel=hvf' no enable
hvf; the legacy '-enable-hvf' will not be supported.

- move HVFX86EmulatorState field to CPUX86State, changing the
the emulation functions to have a parameter with signature 'CPUX86State *'

Since there are some issues in memory alloc/free machenism
in glibc for little chunk memory, if Qemu frequently
alloc/free little chunk memory, the glibc doesn't alloc
little chunk memory from free list of glibc and still
allocate from OS, which make the heap size bigger and bigger.
This patch introduce malloc_trim(), which will free heap
memory when there is no rcu call during rcu thread loop.
malloc_trim() can be enabled/disabled by --enable-malloc-trim/
--disable-malloc-trim in the Qemu configure command. The
default malloc_trim() is enabled for libc.

Recent glibc added memfd_create in sys/mman.h. This conflicts with
the definition in util/memfd.c:

Fix the configure test, and remove the sys/memfd.h inclusion since the

When executing 'configure' in a fresh QEMU clone, in a fresh
OS install running in a ppc64le host, this is the error
shown:

This isn't true, ppc64le host CPU is supported. This happens because,
in a fresh install, we don't have a C compiler to autodetect
the $cpu variable to "ppc64".
This patch moves the CC available check up a bit, just before verifying
the host CPU. This ensures that we bail out with a $CC not available
error instead of unsupported CPU (the host CPU detection without
the compiler wouldn't work properly anyway). It also allows --help to
keep working without a C compiler. With this patch, in the same ppc64le
host without gcc:
$ ../configure --enable-trace-backend=simple --enable-debug
--target-list=ppc64-softmmu
ERROR: "cc" either does not exist or does not work
$ ../configure --help

When cross compiling QEMU for Windows we need to specify the cross
version of ranlib to avoid build errors when building capstone. This
patch ensures we use the same cross prefix on ranlib as other toolchain
components.

Some people building QEMU use VPATH builds where the source directory is on a
read-only volume. In such a case 'scripts/git-submodules.sh update' will always
fail and users are required to run it manually themselves on their original
writable source directory.
While this is already supported, it is nice to give users a command line flag
to configure to permanently disable automatic submodule updates, as it means
they won't get hard to diagnose failures from git-submodules.sh at an arbitrary
later date.
This patch thus introduces a flag '--disable-git-update' which will prevent
'make' from ever running 'scripts/git-submodules.sh update'. It will still run
the 'status' command to determine if a submodule update is needed, but when it
does this it'll simply stop and print a message instructing the developer what
todo. eg
$ ./configure --target-list=x86_64-softmmu --disable-git-update

Some users can't run a bare 'git' command, due to need for a transparent
proxying solution such as 'tsocks'. This adds an argument to configure to
let users specify such a thing:
./configure --with-git="tsocks git"
The submodule script is also updated to give the user a hint about using this
flag, if we fail to checkout modules.

GCC 4.9 and newer stopped warning for missing braces around the
"universal" C zero initializer {0}. One such initializer sneaked
into scsi/qemu-pr-helper.c and is breaking the build with such
older GCC versions.
Detect the lack of support for the idiom, and disable the warning
in that case.

At the moment, Windows libraries don't provide a way to access
RTC, so, a workaround is to use the Windows w32tm command to
resync the time.

If configured, prefer this over our rather dated copy of the
GPLv2-only binutils. This will be especially apparent with
the proposed vector extensions to TCG, as disas/i386.c does
not handle AVX.

We don't need qemu-keymap when we build only linux-user qemu.
When we compile in static mode, the libxkbcommon is detected
by configure if the shared one is available, but cannot
be linked if the static version is not available.
As we don't need it for qemu-linux-user, and we generally need
a static link to use it in a chroot, disable qemu-keymap in
this case.

libmultipath has recently changed its API. The new API supports multi-threaded
clients better. Unfortunately there is no backwards-compatibility, so we just
switch to the new one. Running QEMU compiled with the new library on the old
library will likely crash, while doing the opposite will cause QEMU not to
start at all (because udev, get_multipath_config and put_multipath_config
are undefined).

The https://gitlab.com/keycodemap/keycodemapdb/ repo contains a
data file mapping between all the different scancode/keycode/keysym
sets that are known, and a tool to auto-generate lookup tables for
different combinations.
It is used by GTK-VNC, SPICE-GTK and libvirt for mapping keys.
Using it in QEMU will let us replace many hand written lookup
tables with auto-generated tables from a master data source,
reducing bugs. Adding new QKeyCodes will now only require the
master table to be updated, all ~20 other tables will be
automatically updated to follow.

Currently if DTC is required by configure and not available in the host
OS install, we exit with an error message telling the user to checkout a
git submodule or install the library.
This introduces automatic handling of the git submodule checkout process
and enables it for dtc. This only runs if building from GIT, so users of
release tarballs still need the system library install. The current state
of the git checkout is stashed in .git-submodule-status, and a helper
program is used to determine if this state matches the desired submodule
state. A dependency against 'Makefile' ensures that the submodule state
is refreshed at the start of the build process

This change introduces a new TPM backend driver that can communicate with
swtpm(software TPM emulator) using unix domain socket interface. QEMU talks to
the TPM emulator using QEMU's socket-based chardev backend device.
Swtpm uses two Unix sockets for communications, one for plain TPM commands and
responses, and one for out-of-band control messages. QEMU passes the data
socket to be used over the control channel.

Add a firmware path config option to configure. Multiple directories
are accepted, with the usual colon as separator. Default value is
${prefix}/share/qemu-firmware. The path is searched in addition to the
current search path (typically ${prefix}/share/qemu).
This prepares qemu for the planned split of the prebuilt firmware blobs
into a separate project.
Distributions can also use this to get rid of the firmware symlink farm
and add -- for example -- /usr/share/seabios to the firmware path
instead.

In qemu-thread-posix.c we have two implementations of the
various qemu_sem_* functions, one of which uses native POSIX
sem_* and the other of which emulates them with pthread conditions.
This is necessary because not all our host OSes support
sem_timedwait().
Instead of a hard-coded list of OSes which don't implement
sem_timedwait(), which gets out of date, make configure
test for the presence of the function and set a new
CONFIG_HAVE_SEM_TIMEDWAIT appropriately.
In particular, newer NetBSDs have sem_timedwait(), so this
commit will switch them over to using it. OSX still does
not have an implementation.

Proper support of persistent reservation for multipath devices requires
communication with the multipath daemon, so that the reservation is
registered and applied when a path comes up. The device mapper
utilities provide a library to do so; this patch makes qemu-pr-helper.c
detect multipath devices and, when one is found, delegate the operation
to libmpathpersist.

Introduce a privileged helper to run persistent reservation commands.
This lets virtual machines send persistent reservations without using
CAP_SYS_RAWIO or out-of-tree patches. The helper uses Unix permissions
and SCM_RIGHTS to restrict access to processes that can access its socket
and prove that they have an open file descriptor for a raw SCSI device.
The next patch will also correct the usage of persistent reservations
with multipath devices.
It would also be possible to support for Linux's IOC_PR_* ioctls in
the future, to support NVMe devices. For now, however, only SCSI is
supported.

libseccomp supports s390x since version 2.3.0, and I was able to start
a VM with "-sandbox on" without any obvious problems by using this patch,
so it should be safe to allow --enable-seccomp on s390x nowadays, too.

Nowdays we use libusb for usb-host, so we don't have different code
for linux vs. bsd any more. So there is little reason to have the
HOST_USB variable, we can just write things directly into the Makefile
and avoid a pointless indirection.

Drop pixman submodule and support for the "internal" pixman build.
pixman should be reasonably well established meanwhile so we don't
need the fallback submodule any more. While being at it also drop

Nobody has mentioned AIX host support on the mailing list for years,
and we have no test systems for it so it is most likely broken.
We've advertised in configure for two releases now that we plan
to drop support for this host OS, and have had no complaints.
Drop the AIX host support code.
We can also drop the now-unused AIX version of sys_cache_info().
Note that the _CALL_AIX define used in the PPC tcg backend is
also used for Linux PPC64, and so that code should not be removed.

We threatened to remove ia64 as host in v2.9.0. Its time has now come.
There are still some usages of defined(__ia64__) throughout the source
code that would be triggered if one were to enable TCI on an ia64 host.
Leave those alone for now.

KVM guests on s390 need a different page table layout than normal
processes (2kb page table + 2kb page status extensions vs 2kb page table
only). As of today this has to be enabled via the vm.allocate_pgste
sysctl.
Newer kernels (>= 4.12) on s390 check for an S390_PGSTE program header
and enable the pgste page table extensions in that case. This makes the
vm.allocate_pgste sysctl unnecessary. We enable this program header for
the s390 system emulation (qemu-system-s390x) if we build on s390
- for s390 system emulation
- the linker supports --s390-pgste (binutils >= 2.29)
- KVM is enabled
This will allow distributions to disable the global vm.allocate_pgste
sysctl, which will improve the page table allocation for non KVM
processes as only 2kb chunks are necessary.

Learn to compile out vhost-user (net, scsi & upcoming users). Keep it
enabled by default on non-win32, that is assumed to be POSIX. Fail if
trying to enable it on win32.
When trying to make a vhost-user netdev, it gives the following error:
-netdev vhost-user,id=foo,chardev=chr-test: Parameter 'type' expects a netdev backend type
And similar error with the HMP/QMP monitors.
While at it, rename CONFIG_VHOST_NET_TEST CONFIG_VHOST_USER_NET_TEST
since it's a vhost-user specific variable.

Clang 3.9 passes the CONFIG_AVX2_OPT configure test. However, the
supplied <cpuid.h> does not contain the bit_AVX2 define that we use
when detecting whether the routine can be enabled.
Introduce a qemu-specific header that uses the compiler's definition
of __cpuid et al, but supplies any missing bit_* definitions needed.
This avoids introducing any extra ifdefs to util/bufferiszero.c, and
allows quite a few to be removed from tcg/i386/tcg-target.inc.c.

Solaris 9 was released in 2002, its successor Solaris 10 was
released in 2005, and Solaris 9 was end-of-lifed in 2014.
Nobody has stepped forward to express interest in supporting
Solaris of any flavour, so removing support for the ancient
versions seems uncontroversial.
In particular, this allows us to remove a use of 'uname'
in configure that won't work if you're cross-compiling.

For a very long time we have used 'uname -s' as our fallback if
we don't identify the target OS using a compiler #define. This
obviously doesn't work for cross-compilation, and we've had
a comment suggesting we fix this in configure for a long time.
Since we now have an exhaustive list of which OSes we can run
on (thanks to commit 898be3e041 making an unrecognized OS
be a fatal error), we know which ones we're missing.
Add check_define tests for the remaining OSes we support. The
defines checked are based on ones we already use in the codebase for
identifying the host OS (with the exception of GNU/kFreeBSD).
We can now set bogus_os immediately rather than doing it later.
We leave the comment about uname being bad untouched, since

Don't try to build the ivshmem-server and ivshmem-client tools unless
CONFIG_IVSHMEM is set.
This fixes in passing a build bug on NetBSD, which fails to build the
ivshmem tools because they use shm_open() and on NetBSD that requires
linking against -lrt.

This new call is trying to update a requested map cache entry
according to the changes in the physmap. The call is searching
for the entry, unmaps it and maps again at the same place using
a new guest address. If the mapping is dummy this call will
make it real.
This function makes use of a new xenforeignmemory_map2() call
with an extended interface that was recently introduced in
libxenforeignmemory [1].

While ARM could present the xenpv machine, it does not and trying to enable
it breaks compilation. Revert to the previous test which only looked at
$target_name, not $cpu.

compiler, with the result that if you don't happen to have one
then configure will spuriously print

The configure script prefers pkg-config over sdl-config, but
the "--static-libs" parameter only exists for the latter. With
pkg-config, "--static --libs" have to be used instead.

This lets you build without TCG (hardware accelerationor qtest only). When
this flag is passed to configure, it will automatically filter out the target
list to only those that support KVM or Xen or HAX.

We want the wide character functions from the ncurses header.
Unfortunately it doesn't provide them by default, but only
if either:
* NCURSES_WIDECHAR is defined (for ncurses 20111030 and up)
* _XOPEN_SOURCE/_XOPEN_SOURCE_EXTENDED are suitably defined
So far we have been implicitly relying on the latter, because
for GNU libc when we define _GNU_SOURCE this causes libc
to define the _XOPEN_SOURCE macros for us. Unfortunately
this doesn't work on all libcs, because some (like OSX and
musl libc) do not define _XOPEN_SOURCE when _GNU_SOURCE
is defined.
We can't fix this by defining _XOPEN_SOURCE ourselves, because
that also means "and don't provide any functions that aren't in
that standard", and not all libcs provide any way to override
that to also get the non-standard functions. In particular
FreeBSD has no such mechanism, and OSX's _DARWIN_C_SOURCE
doesn't reenable everything (for instance getpagesize()
is still not prototyped if _DARWIN_C_SOURCE and _XOPEN_SOURCE
are both defined).
So we have to define NCURSES_WIDECHAR. (This will only work
if your ncurses is at least 20111030, as older versions
don't honour this macro.)

Add an XML description for SSE registers (XMM+MXCSR) for both X86
and X86-64 architectures in the GDB stub:
- configure: Define gdb_xml_files for the X86 targets (32 and 64bit).
- gdb-xml/i386-32bit-sse.xml & gdb-xml/i386-64bit-sse.xml: The XML files
that contain a description of the XMM + MXCSR registers.
- gdb-xml/i386-32bit.xml & gdb-xml/i386-64bit.xml: wrappers that include
the XML file of the core registers and the other XML file of the SSE registers.
- target/i386/cpu.c: Modify the gdb_core_xml_file to the new XML wrapper,
modify the gdb_num_core_regs to fit the registers number defined in each
XML file.

There was no possibility to add specific cxx flags using the configure
file. So A new entrance has been created to support it.
Duplication of information in configure and rules.mak. Taking
QEMU_CFLAGS and add them to QEMU_CXXFLAGS, now the value of
QEMU_CXXFLAGS is stored in config-host.mak, so there is no need for
it.
The makefile for libvixl was adding flags for QEMU_CXXFLAGS in
QEMU_CFLAGS because of the addition in rules.mak. That was removed, so
adding them where it should be.

The scripts/qemu-gdb.py file is not easily discoverable. Add a .gdbinit
file so GDB either loads qemu-gdb.py automatically or prints a message
informing the user how to enable them (some systems disable ./.gdbinit
loading for security reasons).
Symlink .gdbinit and the scripts directory in order to make out-of-tree
builds work. The scripts directory is used to find the qemu-gdb.py file
specified by a relative path in .gdbinit.

We have required a v9 cpu since 9b9c37c364.
However, the flags we were using did not reliably enable v8plus, which
meant that the compiler didn't know it could inline 64-bit atomics.

NetBSD ships with traditional BSD curses with compatibility with ncurses.
qemu works nicely with the basesystem version of curses(3) from NetBSD.
The only mismatch between curses(3) and ncurses is the lack of
curses_version() in the NetBSD version. This function is used solely in
the configure script, therefore eliminate it from the curses(3) detection.
With this change applied, configure detects correctly curses frontend.

Add missing support for "preallocation=falloc" to the Gluster block
driver. This change bases its logic on that of block/file-posix.c and
removed the gluster_supports_zerofill() and qemu_gluster_zerofill()
functions in favour of #ifdef checks in an easy to read
switch-statement.
Both glfs_zerofill() and glfs_fallocate() have been introduced with
GlusterFS 3.5.0 (pkg-config glusterfs-api = 6). A #define for the
availability of glfs_fallocate() has been added to ./configure.

Many users now prefer to use drive_mirror over NBD as an
alternative to the older migrate -b option; drive_mirror is
more complex to setup but gives you more options (e.g. only
migrating some of the disks if some of them are shared).
Allow the large chunk of block migration code to be compiled
out for those who don't use it.

The GThread implementation is not functional enough to actually
run QEMU reliably. While it was potentially useful for debugging,
we have a scripts/qemugdb/coroutine.py to enable tracing of
ucontext coroutines in GDB, so that removes the only reason for
GThread to exist.

QEMU_BUILD_BUG_ON should use C11's _Static_assert, if the compiler supports it,
to provide more readable messages on failure.

accordingly. QEMU_BUILD_BUG_ON invokes _Static_assert if CONFIG_STATIC_ASSERT
is defined, and reverts to the old way otherwise.
That way, systems without C11 conforming compiler will still have the old
messages, as verified by intentionally breaking the configure check.

This patch implements XML target description support for X86 and X86-64
architectures in the GDB stub, as the way with ARM and PowerPC:
- gdb-xml/32bit-core.xml & gdb-xml/64bit-core.xml: Adding the XML target
description files, these files are picked from GDB source code.
- configure: Define gdb_xml_files for X86 targets.
- target/i386/cpu.c: Define gdb_core_xml_file and gdb_arch_name to add
XML awareness for this architecture, modify the gdb_num_core_regs to
fit the registers number defined in each XML file.

Since commit "c53eeaf75a04 configure: eliminate Python dependency for
--help", configure --help fails to produce the list of available trace
backends if invoked out-of-tree. It also spits the following error:
grep: scripts/tracetool/backend/*.py: No such file or directory
This patch simply adds the missing $source_path to fix it.

Instead of trying to guess the Xen version to use by compiling various
test programs first just ask the system via pkg-config. Only if it
can't return the version fall back to the test program scheme.
If configure is being called with dedicated flags for the Xen libraries
use those instead of the pkg-config output. This will avoid breaking
an in-tree Xen build of an old Xen version while a new Xen version is
installed on the build machine: pkg-config would pick up the installed
Xen config files as the Xen tree wouldn't contain any of them.

Today qemu is using e.g. the value 480 for Xen version 4.8.0. As some
Xen version tests are using ">" relations this scheme will lead to
problems when Xen version 4.10.0 is being reached.
Instead of the 3 digit schem use a 5 digit scheme (e.g. 40800 for
version 4.8.0).

The ./configure script should produce --help output even if Python is
not installed.
Listing trace backends is simple: show the names of all Python modules
in scripts/tracetool/backend/ whose source code contains 'PUBLIC =
True'.
Perform the backend enumeration in shell instead of Python so that we
can move the Python check until after ./configure --help.

In the 2.7 release we stated in the ChangeLog that the
minimum glib version for Windows hosts was 2.30, but we
didn't update configure to enforce this because we were
very close to the release at the point where we noticed
the issue, and it only affected building the test suite.
We then forgot that we needed to do it. Fix the omission.
(The reason for the 2.30 requirement is use of
g_dir_make_tmp() -- our fallback implementation uses
mkdtemp(), which isn't available on Windows.)

The change in commit 898be3e041 which made completely
unrecognized OSes cause an error_exit "Unsupported host OS"
has some unfortunate unintended effects:
* if you run 'configure --help' on an unsupported host OS
(eg if intending to use it as a build machine for a
cross compile to a supported host) then the message
is printed instead of --help
* if the C compiler doesn't work or is missing (eg if
you passed an incorrect --cross-prefix by mistake)
the message is printed instead of the more useful
'compiler does not exist or does not work' message
Fix this by postponing the error_exit in this situation
until later, when we have already identified the more
useful cases for this.
The long term fix for this would be to move handling
of --help much further up in the configure script,
and make its output not dependent on checks that configure
runs. However for 2.9 this would be too invasive.

We plan to drop support in a future QEMU release for host OSes
and host architectures for which we have no test machine where
we can build and run tests. For the 2.9 release, make configure
print a warning if it is run on such a host, so that the user
has some warning of the plans and can volunteer to help us
maintain the port if they need it to continue to function.
This commit flags up as deprecated the CPU architectures:
* ia64
* sparc
* anything which we don't have a TCG port for
(and which was presumably using TCI)
and the OSes:
* GNU/kFreeBSD
* DragonFly BSD
* NetBSD
* OpenBSD
* Solaris
* AIX
* Haiku
It also makes entirely unrecognized host OS strings be
rejected rather than treated as if they were Linux (which
likely never worked).

sdl is probed before audio, so we can simply look at $sdl so see
whenever we have support or not. Throw an error in case sdl audio
is requested without sdl being available.

The Cygwin target is really compiling for native Win32 with -mno-cygwin.
Except, GCC 4.7.0 has finally removed the long deprecated -mno-cygwin
option, and that happened about five years ago.

The driver has failed to build since commit da34e65, in qemu 2.6,
due to a missing include of qapi/error.h for error_setg().
Since no one has complained in three releases, it is easier to
remove the dead code than to keep it around, especially since it
is not being built by default and therefore prone to bitrot.
