By using --enable-fdt=system we can make sure that the configure
script does not try to check out the "dtc" submodule. This should
help to safe some precious CI minutes in the long run.
While we're at it, also drop some now-redundant --enable-slirp
and --enable-capstone statements. These used to have the "=system"
suffix in the past, too, which has been dropped when the their
corresponding submodules had been removed. Since these features
are auto-enabled anyway now (since the containers have the right
libraries installed), we do not need the explicit --enable-...
statements anymore.

also drop "--disable-capstone" since the capstone submodule has

The windows jobs (especially the 32-bit job) recently started to
hit the timeout limit. Bump it a little bit to ease the situation
(80 minutes is quite long already - OTOH, these jobs do not have to
wait for a job from the container stage to finish, so this should
still be OK).
Additionally, some update on the container side recently enabled
OpenGL in these jobs - but the corresponding code fails to compile.

The current docker image for cross compiling hexagon guests
is manually built since it takes >2 hours to build from source.
This patch:
1. Solves the above issue by using the prebuilt clang
toolchain hosted on CodeLinaro [1] and maintained by QUIC [2].
2. The dockerfile is also switched from multi-stage to single stage
build to allow the CI docker engine to reuse the layer cache.
3. Re-enables the hexagon-cross-container job to be always run in
CI and makes it a non-optional dependency for the
build-user-hexagon job.
The changes for 1 & 2 together bring down the build time to
~3 minutes in GitLab CI when cache is reused and ~9 minutes
when cache cannot be reused.

The Cirrus CI service has announced the intent to discontinue
support for x86_64 macOS CI runners. They already have aarch64
runners available and require all projects to switch to these
images before Jan 1st 2023. The different architecture is
merely determined by the image name requested.
For aarch64 they only support macOS 12 onwards. At the same
time our support policy only guarantees the most recent 2
major versions, so macOS 12 is already technically our min
version.

Since QEMU 7.1 we don't support Ubuntu 18.04 anymore, so the last big
important Linux distro that did not have a pre-packaged libslirp has
been dismissed. All other major distros seem to have a libslirp package
in their distribution already - according to repology.org:
Fedora 35: 4.6.1
CentOS 8 (RHEL-8): 4.4.0
Debian 11: 4.4.0
OpenSUSE Leap 15.3: 4.3.1
Ubuntu LTS 20.04: 4.1.0
FreeBSD Ports: 4.7.0
NetBSD pkgsrc: 4.7.0
Homebrew: 4.7.0
MSYS2 mingw: 4.7.0
The only one that was still missing a libslirp package is OpenBSD - but
the next version (OpenBSD 7.2 which will be shipped in October) is going
to include a libslirp package. Since QEMU 7.2 will be published after
OpenBSD 7.2, we should be fine there, too.
So there is no real urgent need for keeping the slirp submodule in
the QEMU tree anymore. Thus let's drop the slirp submodule now and
rely on the libslirp packages from the distributions instead.

It's becoming harder to maintain a cross-compiler to test this host
architecture as the old stable Debian 10 ("Buster") moved into LTS
which supports fewer architectures. For now:
- mark it's deprecation in the docs
- downgrade the containers to build TCG tests only
- drop the cross builds from our CI

The following error message was seen during the configure:
"ln: failed to create symbolic link
'x86_64-softmmu/qemu-system-x86_64.exe': No such file or directory"
By default the MSYS environment variable is not defined, so the runtime
behavior of winsymlinks is: if <target> does not exist, 'ln -s' fails.
At the configure phase, the qemu-system-x86_64.exe has not been built
so creation of the symbolic link fails hence the error message.
Set winsymlinks to 'native' whose behavior is most similar to the
behavior of 'ln -s' on *nix, that is:
a) if native symlinks are enabled, and whether <target> exists
or not, creates <destination> as a native Windows symlink;
b) else if native symlinks are not enabled, and whether <target>
exists or not, 'ln -s' creates as a Windows shortcut file.

accident and thus are failing now if one tries to run them. Merge
the two sections into one again to fix the issue.
And while we're at it, bump the timeout here (70 minutes are currently
not enough for the aarch64 job). The jobs are marked as manual anyway,
so if the user starts them, they want to see their result for sure and
then it's annoying if the job timeouts too early.

To preserve CI shared runner credits we don't want to run
pipelines on every push.
This sets up the config so that pipelines are never created
for contributors by default. To override this the QEMU_CI
variable can be set to a non-zero value. If set to 1, the
pipeline will be created but all jobs will remain manually
started. The contributor can selectively run jobs that they
care about. If set to 2, the pipeline will be created and
all jobs will immediately start.
This behavior can be controlled using push variables
git push -o ci.variable=QEMU_CI=1
To make this more convenient define an alias
git config --local alias.push-ci "push -o ci.variable=QEMU_CI=1"
git config --local alias.push-ci-now "push -o ci.variable=QEMU_CI=2"
Which lets you run
git push-ci

This folds the Cirrus job rules into the base job
template, introducing two new variables
- QEMU_JOB_CIRRUS - identifies the job as making
use of Cirrus CI via cirrus-run
- QEMU_JOB_OPTIONAL - identifies the job as one
that is not run by default, primarily due to
resource constraints. It can be manually invoked
by users if they wish to validate that scenario.

Currently job rules are spread across the various templates
and jobs, making it hard to understand exactly what runs in
what scenario. This leads to inconsistency in the rules and
increased maint burden.
The intent is that we introduce a common '.base_job_template'
which will have a general purpose 'rules:' block. No other
template or job should define 'rules:', but instead they must
rely on the inherited rules. To allow behaviour to be tweaked,
rules will be influenced by a number of variables with the
naming scheme 'QEMU_JOB_nnnn'.

According to
https://lore.kernel.org/qemu-devel/20200921174118.39352-1-richard.henderson@linaro.org/
there was an issue with Capstone 3.0.4 from Ubuntu 18, which was the reason
for bumping our minimum Capstone requirement to version 4.0. And indeed,
compiling with that version 3.0.4 from Ubuntu 18.04 still fails (after
allowing it with a hack in meson.build). But now that we've dropped support
for Ubuntu 18.04, that issue is not relevant anymore. Compiling with Capstone
version 3.0.5 (e.g. used in Ubuntu 20.04) seems to work fine, so let's allow
that version again.

here that has all the other build dependencies installed. By using a

bit, cutting it down from ca. 1:30 minutes to ca. 45 seconds.

The new msys2-64bit job is often running for more than 50 minutes - and
if the CI is currently loaded, it times out after 60 minutes. The job
has been declared with a bigger timeout, but seems like this is getting
ignored on the shared Gitlab-CI Windows runners, so we're currently
seeing a lot of failures with this job. Thus we have to reduce the time
it takes to finish this job. Since we want to test compiling the WHPX
and HAX accelerator code with this job, switching to another target CPU
is not really a good option, so let's reduce the amount of code that we
have to compile with the --without-default-devices switch instead.

Gitlab also provides runners with Windows, we can use them to
test compilation with MSYS2, in both, 64-bit and 32-bit.
However, it takes quite a long time to set up the VM, so to stay
in a reasonable time frame, we can only compile and check one
target here.

Cirrus-CI provides KVM in their Linux containers, so we can also run
our VM-based NetBSD and OpenBSD build jobs there.
Since the VM installation might take a while, we only run the "help"
target on the first invocation to avoid timeouts, and then only check
the build during the next run, once the base image has been cached.
For the the build tests, we also only use very a limited set of target
CPUs since compiling in these VMs is not very fast (especially the
build on OpenBSD seems to be incredibly slow).
The jobs are marked as "manual" only, since this double-indirect setup
(with the cirrus-run script and VMs in the Cirrus-CI containers) might
fail more often than the other jobs, and since we can trigger a limited
amount of Cirrus-CI jobs at a time anyway (due to the restrictions in
the free tier of Cirrus). Thus these jobs are rather added as convenience
for contributors who would like to run the NetBSD/OpenBSD tests without
the need of downloading and installing the corresponding VM images on
their local machines.

The jobs on Cirrus-CI sometimes get delayed quite a bit, waiting to
be scheduled, so while the build test itself finishes within 60 minutes,
the total run time of the jobs can be longer due to this waiting time.
Thus let's increase the timeout on the gitlab side a little bit, so
that these jobs are not marked as failing just because of the delay.

On the primary QEMU repository we want the CI jobs to run on the staging
branch as a gating CI test.
Cirrus CI has very limited job concurrency, so if there are too many
jobs triggered they'll queue up and hit the GitLab CI job timeout before
they complete on Cirrus.
If we let Cirrus jobs run again on the master branch immediately after
merging from staging, that just increases the chances jobs will get
queued and subsequently timeout.
The same applies for merges to the stable branches.
User forks meanwhile should be allowed to run Cirrus CI jobs freely.

This introduces three different parts of a job designed to run
on a custom runner managed by Red Hat. The goals include:
a) propose a model for other organizations that want to onboard
their own runners, with their specific platforms, build
configuration and tests.
b) bring awareness to the differences between upstream QEMU and the
version available under CentOS Stream, which is "A preview of
upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux minor and major releases".
c) because of b), it should be easier to identify and reduce the gap
between Red Hat's downstream and upstream QEMU.
The components of this custom job are:
I) OS build environment setup code:
- additions to the existing "build-environment.yml" playbook
that can be used to set up CentOS/EL 8 systems.
- a CentOS Stream 8 specific "build-environment.yml" playbook
that adds to the generic one.
II) QEMU build configuration: a script that will produce binaries with
features as similar as possible to the ones built and packaged on
CentOS stream 8.
III) Scripts that define the minimum amount of testing that the
binaries built with the given configuration (point II) under the
given OS build environment (point I) should be subjected to.
IV) Job definition: GitLab CI jobs that will dispatch the build/test
jobs (see points #II and #III) to the machine specifically
configured according to #I.

conclusion was that the folders inside `tests` are related to the

This changes the folder to `tests/avocado` and adjusts the MAKEFILE, the

To be able to cross build QEMU itself we need to include a few more
libraries. These are only available in Debian's unstable ports repo
for now so we need to base the riscv64 image on sid with the the
minimal libs needed to build QEMU (glib/pixman).
The result works but is not as clean as using build-dep to bring in
more dependencies. However sid is by definition a shifting pile of
sand and by keeping the list of libs minimal we reduce the chance of
having an image we can't build. It's good enough for a basic cross
build testing of TCG.

Currently we define a lot of jobs for our custom runners:
for both aarch64 and s390x we have
- all-linux-static
- all
- alldbg
- clang (manual)
- tci
- notcg (manual)
This is overkill. The main reason to run on these hosts is to get
coverage for the host architecture; we can leave the handling of
differences like debug vs non-debug to the x86 CI jobs.
The jobs are also generally running OK; they occasionally fail due to
timeouts, which is likely because we're overloading the machine by
asking it to run 4 CI jobs at once plus the ad-hoc CI.
Remove the 'allow_failure' tag from all these jobs, and switch the
s390x-alldbg, aarch64-all, s390x-tci and aarch64-tci jobs to manual.
(We keep -all on s390x and -alldbg on aarch64 just for diversity
of coverage.)
This will let us make the switch for s390x and aarch64 hosts from
the ad-hoc CI to gitlab.

they have a s390x CI runner machine available. That's ugly, we should
make sure that the related jobs are really only started if such a

According to the log, the failure is "./common.rc: Killed" which might
be an indication that the process has been killed due to out-of-memory

this issue. It used to work fine in the gitlab-CI in the past, but
either the program is now requiring more free memory, or the the CI
containers have changed, so that the OOM condition now sometimes occurs.
Anyway, these two tests are not really suitable for CI containers if

All jobs depending on 'docker-opensbi' job must use at most all
the rules that triggers it. The simplest way to ensure that
is to always use the same rules. Extract all the rules to a
reusable section, and include this section (with the 'extends'
keyword) in both 'docker-opensbi' and 'build-opensbi' jobs.
The problem was introduced in commit c6fc0fc1a7 ("gitlab-ci.yml:
Add jobs to build OpenSBI firmware binaries"), but was revealed in
commit 91e9c47e50 ("docker: OpenSBI build job depends on OpenSBI
container").
This fix is similar to the one used with the EDK2 firmware job in
commit ac0595cf6b ("gitlab-ci: Extract EDK2 job rules to reusable
section").

GitLab will happily publish pages generated by the latest CI pipeline
from any branch:
https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/user/project/pages/introduction.html
"Remember that GitLab Pages are by default branch/tag agnostic
and their deployment relies solely on what you specify in
.gitlab-ci.yml. You can limit the pages job with the only
parameter, whenever a new commit is pushed to a branch used
specifically for your pages."
The current "pages" job is not limited, so it is happily publishing
docs content from any branch/tag in qemu.git that gets pushed to.
This means we're potentially publishing from the "staging" branch
or worse from outdated "stable-NNN" branches
This change restricts it to only publish from the default branch
in the main repository. For contributor forks, however, we allow
it to publish from any branch, since users will have arbitrarily
named topic branches in flight at any time.

Aside from a minor bloat to file size the ability to have TCG plugins
has no real impact on performance unless a plugin is actively loaded.
Even then the libempty.so plugin shows only a minor degradation in
performance caused by the extra book keeping the TCG has to do to keep
track of instructions. As it's a useful feature lets just enable it by
default and reduce our testing matrix a little.
We need to move our linker testing earlier so we can be sure we can
enable the loader module required. As we have ruled out static &
plugins in an earlier patch we can also reduce the indent a little.

This adds support for running 4 jobs via Cirrus CI runners:
* FreeBSD 12
* FreeBSD 13
* macOS 11 with default XCode
* macOS 11 with latest XCode
The gitlab job uses a container published by the libvirt-ci
project (https://gitlab.com/libvirt/libvirt-ci) that contains
the 'cirrus-run' command. This accepts a short yaml file that
describes a single Cirrus CI job, runs it using the Cirrus CI
REST API, and reports any output to the console.
In this way Cirrus CI is effectively working as an indirect
custom runner for GitLab CI pipelines. The key benefit is that
Cirrus CI job results affect the GitLab CI pipeline result and
so the user only has look at one CI dashboard.

As described in the included documentation, the "custom runner" jobs
extend the GitLab CI jobs already in place. One of their primary
goals of catching and preventing regressions on a wider number of host
systems than the ones provided by GitLab's shared runners.
This sets the stage in which other community members can add their own
machine configuration documentation/scripts, and accompanying job
definitions. As a general rule, those newly added contributed jobs
should run as "non-gating", until their reliability is verified (AKA
"allow_failure: true").

Currently tox tests against the installed interpreters, however if any
supported interpreter is absent then it will return fail. It seems not
reasonable to expect developers to have all supported interpreters
installed on their systems. Luckily tox can be configured to skip
missing interpreters.
This changed the tox setup so that missing interpreters are skipped by
default. On the CI, however, we still want to enforce it tests
against all supported. This way on CI the
--skip-missing-interpreters=false option is passed to tox.

Add a Python container that has just enough juice for us to run the
Python code quality analysis tools. Base this container on Fedora,
because Fedora has very convenient packaging for testing multiple Python
versions.
We need python3, pip (for pulling packages), pipenv and virtualenv for
creating virtual environments, and tox for running tests. make is needed
for running 'make check-tox' and 'make venv-check' targets. Python3.10
is needed explicitly because the tox package only pulls in 3.6-3.9, but
we wish to test the forthcoming release of Python as well to help
predict any problems. Lastly, we need gcc to compile PyPI packages that
may not have a binary distribution available.
Add two tests:
check-python-pipenv uses pipenv to test a frozen, very explicit set of
packages against our minimum supported python version, Python 3.6. This
test is not allowed to fail. The dependencies this test uses do not
change unless python/Pipfile.lock is changed.
check-python-tox uses tox to install the latest versions of required
python dependencies against a wide array of Python versions from 3.6 to
3.9, even including the yet-to-be-released Python 3.10. This test is
allowed to fail with a warning.

Due to a design problem and misunderstanding between the Avocado
framework and QEMU, Avocado is fetching many asset artifacts it
shouldn't be fetching, exhausting the jobs CI timeout.
Since Avocado artifacts are cached, this is not an issue with old
forks, which already have populated the cache and do not need to
download new artifacts to run the tests.
However this is very confusing to new contributors who start to
fork the project and keep having failing CI pipelines.
As a temporary kludge, add the QEMU_CI_AVOCADO_TESTING variable
to allow old forks to keep running the Avocado tests, while still
allowing new forks to use the mainstream set of CI tests.
Keep the tests enabled by default on the mainstream namespace
which is old enough to have a populated cache, hoping we will

The hexagon container is always manually built but of course not
everyone will be building it themselves and pushing to their
registries. We still need to create a "local" registry copy for the
actual gitlab tests to run. We don't build it in this case, just pull
it across from the upstream registry. We disable this rule from

Currently we attempt to skip building container images if the commits do
not involve changes to the dockerfiles or gitlab CI definitions.
Conceptually this makes sense, but there is a challenge in the real
world implementation of this in gitlab.
In the case of a CI pipeline triggered from a merge request, GitLab
knows the common ancestor of the merge request and the main git repo,
so it can trivially determine if any of the commits associated with
the MR change the dockerfiles.
In the case of a CI pipeline triggered from a push to a branch, it is
much more difficult. There is no concept of a common ancestor in this
case. Instead GitLab looks at the set of commits in the git push event.
On the surface this may sound reasonable, but it doesn't take into
account that a push event does not always contain the full set of
patches from a branch.
For example, consider pushing 5 commits, one of which contains a
dockerfile change. This will trigger a CI pipeline for the
containers. Now consider you do some more work on the branch and push 3
further commits, so you now have a branch of 8 commits. For the second
push GitLab will only look at the 3 most recent commits, the other 5
were already present. Thus GitLab will not realize that the branch has
dockerfile changes that need to trigger the container build.
This can cause real world problems:
- Push 5 commits to branch "foo", including a dockerfile change
=> rebuilds the container images with content from "foo"
=> build jobs runs against containers from "foo"
- Refresh your master branch with latest upstream master
=> rebuilds the container images with content from "master"
=> build jobs runs against containers from "master"
- Push 3 more commits to branch "foo", with no dockerfile change
=> no container rebuild triggers
=> build jobs runs against containers from "master"
The "changes" conditional in gitlab is OK, *provided* your build
jobs are not relying on any external state from previous builds.
This is NOT the case in QEMU, because we are building container
images and these are cached. This is a scenario in which the
"changes" conditional is not usuable.
The only other way to avoid this problem would be to use the git
branch name as the container image tag, instead of always using
"latest". The downside of this approach is that the user's gitlab
registry will grow significantly until it starts to trigger
GitLab's automatic deletion policy. Every time the user starts
a new branch they will have to trigger a rebuild of the container
images. Given this, we might as well just drop the conditional
and always build the container images. Most of the time docker
will be able to use the layer cache to avoid the most expensive
part of the rebuild process (installing all the RPMs/debs/etc)

While checkpatch.pl can validate DCO sign off that job must always be
advisory only since it is expected that certain patches will fail some
code style rules.
We require the DCO sign off to be mandatory for all commits though, so
it benefits from being validated in a standalone job.

Some of the cross-compiler builds (the mips build and the win64 build

Increase the limit a little bit to make sure that we do not get failures

According to our support policy, we do not support Debian 9 in QEMU
anymore, and we only support building the Windows binaries with a
very recent version of the MinGW toolchain. So we should not test
the MinGW cross-compilation with Debian 9 anymore, but switch to
something newer like Fedora. To do this, we need a separate Fedora
container for each build that provides the QEMU_CONFIGURE_OPTS
environment variable.
Unfortunately, the MinGW 64-bit compiler seems to be a little bit
slow, so we also have to disable some features like "capstone" in the
build here to make sure that the CI pipelines still finish within a
reasonable amount of time.

Now that we can use all our QEMU test containers in the gitlab-CI, we can
easily add some jobs that test cross-compilation for various architectures.
There is just only small ugliness: Since the shared runners on gitlab.com
are single-threaded, we have to split each compilation job into two parts
(--disable-user and --disable-system), and exclude some additional targets,
to avoid that the jobs are running too long and hitting the timeout of 1 h.

The tests/docker/* wildcard seems to only match the files that are directly
in the tests/docker folder - but changes to the files in the directory
tests/docker/dockerfiles are currently ignored. Seems like we need a
separate entry to match the files in that folder. With this wildcard added,
the stages now get re-run successfully when something in the dockerfiles
has been changed.

Instead of building the docker files directly use the same docker.py
scripting as we do for building locally. This should help ensure we
use the exact same steps and allow us to cache properly when building
locally.
To get this working you have to have a fairly recent docker binary
otherwise you will see the error message:
=> ERROR importing cache manifest from registry.gitlab....

We have a number of container images in tests/docker/dockerfiles
that are intended to provide well defined environments for doing
test builds. We want our CI system to use these containers too.
This introduces builds of all of them as the first stage in the
CI, so that the built containers are available for later build
jobs. The containers are setup to use the GitLab container
registry as the cache, so we only pay the penalty of the full
build when the dockerfiles change. The main qemu-project/qemu
repo is used as a second cache, so that users forking QEMU will
see a fast turnaround time on their CI jobs.
