The BQL is acquired via qemu_mutex_lock_iothread(), which makes
the profiler assign the associated wait time (i.e. most of
BQL wait time) entirely to that function. This loses the original
call site information, which does not help diagnose BQL contention.
Fix it by tracking the callers explicitly.

The test-vmstate test is a bit chatty because it triggers various
expected failure scenarios and the code in question uses error_report
instead of accepting 'Error **errp' parameters. To silence this test the
stubs for error_vprintf() were changed to send errors via
g_test_message() instead of stderr:

Unfortunately this change has global impact across the entire test suite
and means that when tests fail for unexpected reasons, the message is
not displayed on stderr. eg when using &error_abort in a call the test
merely prints
Unexpected error in qcrypto_tls_session_check_certificate() at crypto/tlssession.c:280:
and the actual error message is hidden, making it impossible to diagnose
the failure. This is especially problematic in CI or build systems where
it isn't possible to easily pass the --debug-log flag to tests and
re-run with the test log visible.
This change makes the previous big hammer much more nuanced, providing a
flag in the stub error_vprintf() that can used on a per-test basis to
silence the errors. Only the test-vmstate silences errors initially.

@cur_mon is null unless the main thread is running monitor code, either
HMP code within monitor_read(), or QMP code within
monitor_qmp_dispatch().
Use of @cur_mon outside the main thread is therefore unsafe.
Most of its uses are in monitor command handlers. These run in the main
thread.
However, there are also uses hiding elsewhere, such as in
error_vprintf(), and thus error_report(), making these functions unsafe
outside the main thread. No such unsafe uses are known at this time.
Regardless, this is an unnecessary trap. It's an ancient trap, though.
More recently, commit cf869d5317 "qmp: support out-of-band (oob)
execution" spiced things up: the monitor I/O thread assigns to @cur_mon
when executing commands out-of-band. Having two threads save, set and
restore @cur_mon without synchronization is definitely unsafe. We can
end up with @cur_mon null while the main thread runs monitor code, or
non-null while it runs non-monitor code.
We could fix this by making the I/O thread not mess with @cur_mon, but
that would leave the trap armed and ready.
Instead, make @cur_mon thread-local. It's now reliably null unless the
thread is running monitor code.

laio_init() can fail for a couple of reasons, which will lead to a NULL
pointer dereference in laio_attach_aio_context().
To solve this, add a aio_setup_linux_aio() function which is called
early in raw_open_common. If this fails, propagate the error up. The
signature of aio_get_linux_aio() was not modified, because it seems
preferable to return the actual errno from the possible failing
initialization calls.
Additionally, when the AioContext changes, we need to associate a
LinuxAioState with the new AioContext. Use the bdrv_attach_aio_context
callback and call the new aio_setup_linux_aio(), which will allocate a
new AioContext if needed, and return errors on failures. If it fails for
any reason, fallback to threaded AIO with an error message, as the
device is already in-use by the guest.
Add an assert that aio_get_linux_aio() cannot return NULL.

Introduce a new global big lock for mon_fdsets. Take it where needed.
The monitor_fdset_get_fd() handling is a bit tricky: now we need to call
qemu_mutex_unlock() which might pollute errno, so we need to make sure
the correct errno be passed up to the callers. To make things simpler,
we let monitor_fdset_get_fd() return the -errno directly when error
happens, then in qemu_open() we move it back into errno.

On the qmp level, we already have the concept of memory devices:
"query-memory-devices"
Right now, we only support NVDIMM and PCDIMM.
We want to map other devices later into the address space of the guest.
Such device could e.g. be virtio devices. These devices will have a
guest memory range assigned but won't be exposed via e.g. ACPI. We want
to make them look like memory device, but not glued to pc-dimm.
Especially, it will not always be possible to have TYPE_PC_DIMM as a parent
class (e.g. virtio devices). Let's use an interface instead. As a first
part, convert handling of
- qmp_pc_dimm_device_list
- get_plugged_memory_size
to our new model. plug/unplug stuff etc. will follow later.
A memory device will have to provide the following functions:
- get_addr(): Necessary, as the property "addr" can e.g. not be used for
virtio devices (already defined).
- get_plugged_size(): The amount this device offers to the guest as of
now.
- get_region_size(): Because this can later on be bigger than the
plugged size.
- fill_device_info(): Fill MemoryDeviceInfo, e.g. for qmp.

The previous commit improved compile time by including less of the
generated QAPI headers. This is impossible for stuff defined directly
in qapi-schema.json, because that ends up in headers that that pull in
everything.
Move everything but include directives from qapi-schema.json to new
sub-module qapi/misc.json, then include just the "misc" shard where
possible.
It's possible everywhere, except:
* monitor.c needs qmp-command.h to get qmp_init_marshal()
* monitor.c, ui/vnc.c and the generated qapi-event-FOO.c need
qapi-event.h to get enum QAPIEvent
Perhaps we'll get rid of those some other day.

HW part of ACPI PCI hotplug in QEMU depends on ACPI_PCIHP_PROP_BSEL
being set on a PCI bus that supports ACPI hotplug. It should work
regardless of the source of ACPI tables (QEMU generator/legacy SeaBIOS/Xen).
So move ACPI_PCIHP_PROP_BSEL initialization into HW ACPI implementation
part from QEMU's ACPI table generator.
To do PCI passthrough with Xen, the property ACPI_PCIHP_PROP_BSEL needs
to be set, but this was done only when ACPI tables are built which is
not needed for a Xen guest. The need for the property starts with commit
"pc: pcihp: avoid adding ACPI_PCIHP_PROP_BSEL twice"

Commit a3a3d8c7 introduced a segfault bug while checking for
'dc->vmsd->unmigratable' which caused QEMU to crash when trying to add
devices which do no set their 'dc->vmsd' yet while initialization.
Place a 'dc->vmsd' check prior to it so that we do not segfault for
such devices.
NOTE: This doesn't compromise the functioning of --only-migratable
option as all the unmigratable devices do set their 'dc->vmsd'.

We leave users to choose whatever heartbeat solution they want,
if the heartbeat is lost, or other errors they detect, they can use
experimental command 'x_colo_lost_heartbeat' to tell COLO to do failover,
COLO will do operations accordingly.
For example, if the command is sent to the Primary side,
the Primary side will exit COLO mode, does cleanup work,
and then, PVM will take over the service work. If sent to the Secondary side,
the Secondary side will run failover work, then takes over PVM's service work.

A number of different places across the code base use CONFIG_UUID. Some
of them are soft dependency, some are not built if libuuid is not
available, some come with dummy fallback, some throws runtime error.
It is hard to maintain, and hard to reason for users.
Since UUID is a simple standard with only a small number of operations,
it is cleaner to have a central support in libqemuutil. This patch adds
qemu_uuid_* functions that all uuid users in the code base can
rely on. Except for qemu_uuid_generate which is new code, all other
functions are just copy from existing fallbacks from other files.
Note that qemu_uuid_parse is moved without updating the function
signature to use QemuUUID, to keep this patch simple.

Let's provide a standardized interface to baseline two CPU models, to
create a third, compatible one. This is especially helpful when two
CPU models are not identical, but a CPU model is required that is
guaranteed to run under both configurations, where the original models run.
"query-cpu-model-baseline" takes two CPU models and returns a third,
compatible model. The result will always be a static CPU model.

Let's provide a standardized interface to compare two CPU models.
"query-cpu-model-compare" takes two models and returns how they compare
in a specific configuration.
The result will give guarantees about runnability. E.g. if a CPU model A
is a subset of CPU model B, model A is guaranteed to run in configurations
where model B runs, but not the other way around (might or might not run).
Usually, CPU features or CPU generations are used to calculate the result.
If a model is not guaranteed to run in a certain environment (e.g.
incompatible), a compatible one can be created by "baselining" both models
(follow up patch).

Let's provide a standardized interface to expand CPU models. This interface
can be used by tooling to get details about a specific CPU model in a
certain configuration, e.g. about the "host" model.
To take care of all architectures, two detail levels for an expansion
are introduced. Certain architectures might not support all detail levels.
While "full" will expand and indicate all relevant properties/features
of a CPU model, "static" expands to a static base CPU model, that will
never change between QEMU versions and therefore have the same features
when used under different compatibility machines.

Commit 57cb38b included qapi/error.h into qemu/osdep.h to get the
Error typedef. Since then, we've moved to include qemu/osdep.h
everywhere. Its file comment explains: "To avoid getting into
possible circular include dependencies, this file should not include
any other QEMU headers, with the exceptions of config-host.h,
compiler.h, os-posix.h and os-win32.h, all of which are doing a
similar job to this file and are under similar constraints."
qapi/error.h doesn't do a similar job, and it doesn't adhere to
similar constraints: it includes qapi-types.h. That's in excess of
100KiB of crap most .c files don't actually need.
Add the typedef to qemu/typedefs.h, and include that instead of
qapi/error.h. Include qapi/error.h in .c files that need it and don't
get it now. Include qapi-types.h in qom/object.h for uint16List.
Update scripts/clean-includes accordingly. Update it further to match
reality: replace config.h by config-target.h, add sysemu/os-posix.h,
sysemu/os-win32.h. Update the list of includes in the qemu/osdep.h
comment quoted above similarly.
This reduces the number of objects depending on qapi/error.h from "all
of them" to less than a third. Unfortunately, the number depending on
qapi-types.h shrinks only a little. More work is needed for that one.

qemu_clock_warp function is called to update virtual clock when CPU
is sleeping. This function includes replay checkpoint to make execution
deterministic in icount mode.
Record/replay module flushes async event queue at checkpoints.
Some of the events (e.g., block devices operations) include interaction
with hardware. E.g., APIC polled by block devices sets one of IRQ flags.
Flag to be set depends on currently executed thread (CPU or iothread).
Therefore in replay mode we have to process the checkpoints in the same thread
as they were recorded.
qemu_clock_warp function (and its checkpoint) may be called from different
thread. This patch decouples two different execution cases of this function:
call when CPU is sleeping from iothread and call from cpu thread to update
virtual clock.
First task is performed by qemu_start_warp_timer function. It sets warp
timer event to the moment of nearest pending virtual timer.
Second function (qemu_account_warp_timer) is called from cpu thread
before execution of the code. It advances virtual clock by adding the length
of period while CPU was sleeping.

This patch adds support for split IRQ chip mode. When
KVM_CAP_SPLIT_IRQCHIP is enabled:
1.) The PIC, PIT, and IOAPIC are implemented in userspace while
the LAPIC is implemented by KVM.
2.) The software IOAPIC delivers interrupts to the KVM LAPIC via
kvm_set_irq. Interrupt delivery is configured via the MSI routing
table, for which routes are reserved in target-i386/kvm.c then
configured in hw/intc/ioapic.c
3.) KVM delivers IOAPIC EOIs via a new exit KVM_EXIT_IOAPIC_EOI,
which is handled in target-i386/kvm.c and relayed to the software
IOAPIC via ioapic_eoi_broadcast.

At the moment get_monitor_def() returns only registers from statically
defined monitor_defs array. However there is a lot of BOOK3S SPRs
which are not in the list and cannot be printed from the monitor.
This adds a new target platform hook - target_get_monitor_def().
The hook is called if a register was not found in the static
array returned by the target_monitor_defs() hook.
The hook is only defined for POWERPC, it returns registered
SPRs and fails on unregistered ones providing the user with information
on what is actually supported on the running CPU. The register value is
saved as uint64_t as it is the biggest supported register size;
target_ulong cannot be used because of the stub - it is in a "common"
code and cannot include "cpu.h", etc; this is also why the hook prototype
is redefined in the stub instead of being included from some header.
This replaces static descriptors for GPRs, FPRs, SRs with a helper which
looks for a value in a corresponding array in the CPUPPCState.
The immediate effect is that all 32 SRs can be printed now (instead of 16);
later this can be reused for VSX or TM registers.
This replaces callbacks for MSR and XER with static descriptors in
monitor_defs as they are stored in CPUPPCState.
While we are here, this adds "cr" as a synonym of "ccr".

Clock ticks are considered as the sources of non-deterministic data for
virtual machine. This patch implements saving the clock values when they
are acquired (virtual, host clock).
When replaying the execution corresponding values are read from log and
transfered to the module, which wants to read the values.
Such a design required the clock polling to be synchronized. Sometimes
it is not true - e.g. when timeouts for timer lists are checked. In this case
we use a cached value of the clock, passing it to the client code.

This function will be used to avoid recursive locking of the iothread lock
whenever address_space_rw/ld*/st* are called with the BQL held, which is
almost always the case.
Tracking whether the iothread is owned is very cheap (just use a TLS
variable) but requires some care because now the lock must always be
taken with qemu_mutex_lock_iothread(). Previously this wasn't the case.
Outside TCG mode this is not a problem. In TCG mode, we need to be
careful and avoid the "prod out of compiled code" step if already
in a VCPU thread. This is easily done with a check on current_cpu,
i.e. qemu_in_vcpu_thread().
Hopefully, multithreaded TCG will get rid of the whole logic to kick
VCPUs whenever an I/O event occurs!

If the BDS's refcnt > 0, drive_del() destroys the DriveInfo, but not
the BDS. This can happen in three places:
* Device model destruction during unplug: blockdev_auto_del()
* Xen IDE unplug: pci_piix3_xen_ide_unplug()
* drive_del command when no device model is attached: do_drive_del()
The other callers of drive_del are on error paths where refcnt == 1.
If the user somehow manages to plug in a device model using a BDS that
has gone through drive_del(), the legacy configuration passed in
DriveInfo doesn't reach the device model, and automatic deletion on
unplug doesn't work. Worse, some device models such as scsi-disk
crash when DriveInfo doesn't exist.
This is theoretical; I didn't research an actual reproducer. The problem
was introduced when we replaced DriveInfo reference counting by BDS
reference counting in commit a94a3fa..fa510eb.
Fix by keeping DriveInfo alive until its BDS dies.
This affects qemu_drive_opts: now you can't reuse the same ID for new
drive options until the BDS dies. Before, you could, but since the
code always attempts to create a BDS with the same ID next, the
enclosing operation "create a new drive" failed anyway. Different
error path, same result.
Unfortunately, the fix involves use of blockdev.c stuff from block.c,
which is a layering violation. Fortunately, my forthcoming
BlockBackend work will get rid of it again.

chr-testdev enables a virtio serial channel to be used for guest
initiated qemu exits. hw/misc/debugexit already enables guest

any virtio-capable target. kvm-unit-tests/arm is already making use

Currently there is a single command implemented, "q". It takes a

It can be used as:
$QEMU ... \

With virtio-blk dataplane, I/O errors might occur while QEMU is
not in the main I/O thread. However, it's invalid to call vm_stop
when we're neither in a VCPU thread nor in the main I/O thread,
even if we were to take the iothread mutex around it.
To avoid this problem, we can raise a request to the main I/O thread,
similar to what QEMU does when vm_stop is called from a CPU thread.
We know that bdrv_error_action is called from an AIO callback, and
the moment at which the callback will fire is not well-defined; it
depends on the moment at which the disk or OS finishes the operation,
which can happen at any time. Note that QEMU is certainly not in a CPU
thread and we do not need to call cpu_stop_current() like vm_stop() does.
However, we need to ensure that any action taken by management will
result in correct detection of the error _and_ a running VM. In particular:
- the event must be raised after the iostatus has been set, so that
"info block" will return an iostatus that matches the event.
- the VM must be stopped after the iostatus has been set, so that
"info block" will return an iostatus that matches the runstate.
The ordering between the STOP and BLOCK_IO_ERROR events is preserved;
BLOCK_IO_ERROR is documented to come first.
This makes bdrv_error_action() thread safe (assuming QMP events are,
which is attacked by a separate series).

Opening an encrypted image takes an additional step: setting the key.
Between open and the key set, the image must not be used.
We have some protection against accidental use in place: you can't
unpause a guest while we're missing keys. You can, however, hot-plug
block devices lacking keys into a running guest just fine, or insert

at least some guests in common usage.
This patch makes the protection apply in more cases, in a rather
heavy-handed way: it doesn't let you open encrypted images unless
we're in a paused state.
It doesn't extend the protection to users other than the guest (block
jobs?). Use of runstate_check() from block.c is disgusting. Best I
can do right now.

When running under qtest we don't actually have any vcpu threads
to be starved, so the warning about the I/O thread spinning isn't
relevant, and the way qtest manipulates the simulated clock means
the warning is produced a lot as a false positive. Suppress it if
qtest_enabled(), so 'make check' output is less noisy.

If slirp needs to emulate tcp timeout, then the timeout value
for mainloop should be more precise, which is determined by
slirp's fasttimo or slowtimo. Achieve this by swap the logic
sequence of slirp_pollfds_fill and slirp_update_timeout.

Slirp uses rfds/wfds/xfds more extensively than other QEMU components.
The rarely-used out-of-band TCP data feature is used. That means we
need the full table of select(2) to g_poll(3) events:
rfds -> G_IO_IN | G_IO_HUP | G_IO_ERR
wfds -> G_IO_OUT | G_IO_ERR
xfds -> G_IO_PRI
I came up with this table by looking at Linux fs/select.c which maps
select(2) to poll(2) internally.
Another detail to watch out for are the global variables that reference
rfds/wfds/xfds during slirp_select_poll(). sofcantrcvmore() and
sofcantsendmore() use these globals to clear fd_set bits. When
sofcantrcvmore() is called, the wfds bit is cleared so that the write
handler will no longer be run for this iteration of the event loop.
This actually seems buggy to me since TCP connections can be half-closed
and we'd still want to handle data in half-duplex fashion. I think the
real intention is to avoid running the read/write handler when the
socket has been fully closed. This is indicated with the SS_NOFDREF
state bit so we now check for it before invoking the TCP write handler.
Note that UDP/ICMP code paths don't care because they are
connectionless.
Note that slirp/ has a lot of tabs and sometimes mixed tabs with spaces.
I followed the style of the surrounding code.

Weak symbols were a nice idea, but they turned out not to be a good one.
Toolchain support is just too sparse, in particular llvm-gcc is totally
broken.
This patch uses a surprisingly low-tech approach: a static library.
Symbols in a static library are always overridden by symbols in an
object file. Furthermore, if you place each function in a separate
source file, object files for unused functions will not be taken in.
This means that each function can use all the dependencies that it needs
(especially QAPI stuff such as error_setg).
Thus, all stubs are placed in separate object files and put together in
a static library. The library then is linked to all programs.
