New option will be used to allow commands, which are prepared/need
to run, during preconfig state. Other commands that should be able
to run in preconfig state, should be amended to not expect machine
in initialized state or deal with it.
For compatibility reasons, commands that don't use new flag
'allow-preconfig' explicitly are not permitted to run in
preconfig state but allowed in all other states like they used
to be.
Within this patch allow following commands in preconfig state:
qmp_capabilities

query-command-line-options
query-status
exit-preconfig

everywhere instead of having to use QINCREF() / QDECREF() for QObject

The replacement is mechanical, except I broke a long line, and added a

Eric Auger reported the problem days ago that OOB broke ARM when running
with libvirt:
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/qemu-devel/2018-03/msg06231.html
The problem was that the monitor dispatcher bottom half was bound to
qemu_aio_context now, which could be polled unexpectedly in block code.
We should keep the dispatchers run in iohandler_ctx just like what we
did before the Out-Of-Band series (chardev uses qio, and qio binds
everything with iohandler_ctx).
If without this change, QMP dispatcher might be run even before reaching
main loop in block IO path, for example, in a stack like (the ARM case,
"cont" command handler run even during machine init phase):
#0 qmp_cont ()
#1 0x00000000006bd210 in qmp_marshal_cont ()

Actually the problem is more severe than that. After we switched to the
qemu AIO handler it means the monitor dispatcher code can even be called
with nested aio_poll(), then it can be an explicit aio_poll() inside
another main loop aio_poll() which could be racy too; breaking code
like TPM and 9p that use nested event loops.
Switch to use the iohandler_ctx for monitor dispatchers.
My sincere thanks to Eric Auger who offered great help during both
debugging and verifying the problem. The ARM test was carried out by
applying this patch upon QEMU 2.12.0-rc0 and problem is gone after the
patch.
A quick test of mine shows that after this patch applied we can pass all
raw iotests even with OOB on by default.

An example command line:
./qemu-system-x86_64 -chardev stdio,id=char0 \
-mon chardev=char0,mode=control,x-oob=on
By default, Out-Of-Band is off.
It is not allowed if either MUX or non-QMP is detected, since
Out-Of-Band is currently only for QMP, and non-MUX chardev backends.
Note that the client STILL has to request 'oob' during qmp_capabilities;
in part because the x-oob command line option may disappear in the

other patches fix the issues that iotests exposed, it may be turned

either way, the framework changes not reverted now do not hurt if

For those monitors who have enabled IO thread, we'll offload the
responding procedure into IO thread. The main reason is that chardev is
not thread safe, and we need to do all the read/write IOs in the same
thread. For use_io_thr=true monitors, that thread is the IO thread.
We do this isolation in similar pattern as what we have done to the
request queue: we first create one response queue for each monitor, then
instead of replying directly in the main thread, we queue the responses
and kick the IO thread to do the rest of the job for us.
A funny thing after doing this is that, when the QMP clients send "quit"
to QEMU, it's possible that we close the IOThread even earlier than
replying to that "quit". So another thing we need to do before cleaning
up the monitors is that we need to flush the response queue (we don't
need to do that for command queue; after all we are quitting) to make
sure replies for handled commands are always flushed back to clients.

Having "allow-oob":true for a command does not mean that this command
will always be run in out-of-band mode. The out-of-band quick path will
only be executed if we specify the extra "run-oob" flag when sending the
QMP request:
{ "execute": "command-that-allows-oob",
"arguments": { ... },
"control": { "run-oob": true } }
The "control" key is introduced to store this extra flag. "control"
field is used to store arguments that are shared by all the commands,
rather than command specific arguments. Let "run-oob" be the first.
Note that in the patch I exported qmp_dispatch_check_obj() to be used to
check the request earlier, and at the same time allowed "id" field to be
there since actually we always allow that.

Set maximum QMP command queue length to 8. If the queue is full,
instead of queuing the command, we directly return a "command-dropped"
event, telling the client that a specific command is dropped.
Note that this flow control mechanism is only valid if OOB is enabled.
If it's not, the effective queue length will always be 1, which strictly
follows original behavior of QMP command handling (which never drops

Originally QMP goes through these steps:

This patch does this:
JSON Parser QMP Dispatcher --> Respond
/|\ | /|\ (4) |
| | (2) | (3) | (5)
(1) | +-----> | \|/
+--------- main thread <-------+
So the parsing job and the dispatching job is isolated now. It gives us
a chance in follow up patches to totally move the parser outside.
The isolation is done using one QEMUBH. Only one dispatcher QEMUBH is
used for all the monitors.

There were no QMP capabilities defined. Define the first capability,
"oob", to allow out-of-band messages.
After this patch, we will allow QMP clients to enable QMP capabilities
when sending the first "qmp_capabilities" command. Originally we are
starting QMP session with no arguments like:
{ "execute": "qmp_capabilities" }
Now we can enable some QMP capabilities using (take OOB as example,
which is the only capability that we support):
{ "execute": "qmp_capabilities",
"arguments": { "enable": [ "oob" ] } }
When the "arguments" key is not provided, no capability is enabled.
For capability "oob", the monitor needs to be run on a dedicated IO
thread, otherwise the command will fail. For example, trying to enable
OOB on a MUXed typed QMP monitor will fail.
One thing to mention is that QMP capabilities are per-monitor, and also
when the connection is closed due to some reason, the capabilities will
be reset.
Also, touch up qmp-test.c to test the new bits.

For each Monitor, add one field "use_io_thr" to show whether it will be
using the dedicated monitor IO thread to handle input/output. When set,
monitor IO parsing work will be offloaded to the dedicated monitor IO
thread, rather than the original main loop thread.
This only works for QMP. HMP will always be run on the main loop
thread.
Currently we're still keeping use_io_thr off always. Will turn it on
later at some point.
One thing to mention is that we cannot set use_io_thr for every QMP
monitor. The problem is that MUXed typed chardevs may not work well
with it now. When MUX is used, frontend of chardev can be the monitor
plus something else. The only thing we know would be safe to be run
outside main thread so far is the monitor frontend. All the rest of the
frontends should still be run in main thread only.

In monitor_qmp_read(), we have the hack to temporarily replace the
cur_mon pointer. Now we move this hack deeper inside the QMP dispatcher
routine since the Monitor pointer can be actually obtained using
container_of() upon the parser object, just like most of the other JSON
parser users do.
This does not make much sense as a single patch. However, this will be
a big step for the next patch, when the QMP dispatcher routine will be

They are deprecated since QEMU v2.10, and so far nobody complained that
these commands are still necessary for any reason - and since you can use
'netdev_add' and 'netdev_remove' instead, there also should not be any
real reason. Since they are also standing in the way for the upcoming

Move qapi-schema.json to qapi/, so it's next to its modules, and all
files get generated to qapi/, not just the ones generated for modules.
Consistently name the generated files qapi-MODULE.EXT:
qmp-commands.[ch] become qapi-commands.[ch], qapi-event.[ch] become
qapi-events.[ch], and qmp-introspect.[ch] become qapi-introspect.[ch].
This gets rid of the temporary hacks in scripts/qapi/commands.py,
scripts/qapi/events.py, and scripts/qapi/common.py.

Whenever qapi-schema.json changes, we run six programs eleven times to
update eleven files. Similar for qga/qapi-schema.json. This is
silly. Replace the six programs by a single program that spits out
all eleven files.
The programs become modules in new Python package qapi, along with the
helper library. This requires moving them to scripts/qapi/. While
moving them, consistently drop executable mode bits.

Changing the implementation of hmp_info_cpus() to call
qmp_query_cpus_fast() instead of qmp_query_cpus. This has the
following consequences:
o No further code change required for qmp_query_cpus deprecation
o HMP profits from the less disruptive cpu information retrieval
o HMP 'info cpus' won't display architecture specific data anymore,
which should be tolerable in the light of the deprecation of
query-cpus.
In order to allow 'info cpus' to be executed completely on the
fast path, monitor_get_cpu_index() has been adapted to not synchronize
the cpu state.

qbool.h, qnull.h, qnum.h and qstring.h to compile. We include qnull.h

If a CPU selected with the "cpu" command is hot-unplugged then "info cpus"
causes QEMU to exit:
(qemu) device_del cpu1
(qemu) info cpus
qemu:qemu_cpu_kick_thread: No such process
This happens because "cpu" stores the pointer to the selected CPU into
the monitor structure. When the CPU is hot-unplugged, we end up with a
dangling pointer. The "info cpus" command then does:
hmp_info_cpus()
monitor_get_cpu_index()
mon_get_cpu()
cpu_synchronize_state() <--- called with dangling pointer
This could cause a QEMU crash as well.
This patch switches the monitor to store the QOM path instead of a
pointer to the current CPU. The path is then resolved when needed.
If the resolution fails, we assume that the CPU was removed and the
path is resetted to the default (ie, path of first_cpu).

The info registers command in the qemu monitor is used to dump register
values.
Currently this command uses the monitor cpu (which can be set by the
user) as the cpu for whose registers will be dumped. Sometimes it is
useful to see the registers for all cpus and currently this requires
setting the monitor cpu and the re-running the command for each cpu
in the system. I would be nice if there was an easier way to do this.
Add the "-a" option to the info registers command to dump the register
values for all cpus.

efec3dd631 to replace no_user. It was
supposed to be a temporary measure.
When it was introduced, we had 54
cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines in the code.
Today (3 years later) this number has not shrunk: we now have
57 cannot_instantiate_with_device_add_yet=true lines. I think it

the flag go away soon.
Instead of a long field name that misleads people to believe it
is temporary, replace it a shorter and less misleading field:

qmp_check_input_obj() duplicates qmp_dispatch_check_obj(), except the
latter screws up an error message. handle_qmp_command() runs first
the former, then the latter via qmp_dispatch(), masking the screwup.
qemu-ga also masks the screwup, because it also duplicates checks,
just differently.
qmp_check_input_obj() exists because handle_qmp_command() needs to
examine the command before dispatching it. The previous commit got
rid of this need, except for a tracepoint, and a bit of "id" code that
relies on qdict not being null.
Fix up the error message in qmp_dispatch_check_obj(), drop
qmp_check_input_obj() and the tracepoint. Protect the "id" code with

To enforce capability negotiation before normal operation,
handle_qmp_command() inspects every command before it's handed off to
qmp_dispatch(). This is a bit of a layering violation, and results in
duplicated code.
Before capability negotiation (!cur_mon->in_command_mode), we fail
commands other than "qmp_capabilities". This is what enforces
capability negotiation.
Afterwards, we fail command "qmp_capabilities".
Clean this up as follows.
The obvious place to fail a command is the command itself, so move the
"afterwards" check to qmp_qmp_capabilities().
We do the "before" check in every other command, but that would be
bothersome. Instead, start with an alternate list of commands that
contains only "qmp_capabilities". Switch to the full list in
qmp_qmp_capabilities().
Additionally, replace the generic human-readable error message for
CommandNotFound by one that reminds the user to run qmp_capabilities.
Without that, we'd regress commit 2d5a834.

The way we get QMP commands registered is high tech:
* qapi-commands.py generates qmp_init_marshal() that does the actual work
* it also generates the magic to register it as a MODULE_INIT_QAPI
function, so it runs when someone calls
module_call_init(MODULE_INIT_QAPI)
* main() calls module_call_init()
QEMU needs to register a few non-qapified commands. Same high tech
works: monitor.c has its own qmp_init_marshal() along with the magic
to make it run in module_call_init(MODULE_INIT_QAPI).
QEMU also needs to unregister commands that are not wanted in this
build's configuration (commit 5032a16). Simple enough:
qmp_unregister_commands_hack(). The difficulty is to make it run
after the generated qmp_init_marshal(). We can't simply run it in
monitor.c's qmp_init_marshal(), because the order in which the
registered functions run is indeterminate. So qmp_init_marshal()
registers qmp_unregister_commands_hack() separately. Since
registering *appends* to the list of registered functions, this will
make it run after all the functions that have been registered already.
I suspect it takes a long and expensive computer science education to
not find this silly.
Dumb it down as follows:
* Drop MODULE_INIT_QAPI entirely
* Give the generated qmp_init_marshal() external linkage.
* Call it instead of module_call_init(MODULE_INIT_QAPI)
* Except in QEMU proper, call new monitor_init_qmp_commands() that in
turn calls the generated qmp_init_marshal(), registers the
additional commands and unregisters the unwanted ones.

This should meet all the requirements while being simple. In the
case of static expansion, it will use the new "base" CPU model,
and in the case of full expansion, it will keep the original CPU
model name+props, and append extra properties.
A future follow-up should improve the implementation of

"info tlb", "nmi", "memsave" or dumping virtual memory) with the "none"
machine, QEMU crashes with a segmentation fault. This happens because the
"none" machine does not have any CPUs by default, but these HMP commands
did not check for a valid CPU pointer yet. Add such checks now, so we get
an error message about the missing CPU instead.

Turn Chardev into Object.
qemu_chr_alloc() is replaced by the qemu_chardev_new() constructor. It
will call qemu_char_open() to open/intialize the chardev with the
ChardevCommon *backend settings.
The CharDriver::create() callback is turned into a ChardevClass::open()
which is called from the newly introduced qemu_chardev_open().
"chardev-gdb" and "chardev-hci" are internal chardev and aren't
creatable directly with -chardev. Use a new internal flag to disable
them. We may want to use TYPE_USER_CREATABLE interface instead, or
perhaps allow -chardev usage.
Although in general we keep typename and macros private, unless the type
is being used by some other file, in this patch, all types and common
helper macros for qemu-char.c are in char.h. This is to help transition
now (some types must be declared early, while some aren't shared) and
when splitting in several units. This is to be improved later.

claiming in init(), and add a function deinit() to release the chardev
and cleanup handlers.
The qemu_chr_fe_claim_no_fail() for property are gone, since the

This is implemented by extending the existing hack at

Now that we allow CPU hot unplug on a few platforms, we can end up in a
situation where we don't have a CPU with index 0. Or at least we could,
if we didn't have code to explicitly prohibit unplug of CPU 0.
Longer term we want to allow CPU 0 unplug, this patch is an early step in
allowing this, by removing an assumption in the monitor code that CPU 0
always exists.

We currently define QMP commands in two places: the QAPI schema and
qmp-commands.hx. The latter is preprocessed, the former is not. We
use the preprocessor to suppress configuration-specific commands. For
instance, query-spice is only available #ifdef CONFIG_SPICE.
QMP command dispatch and query-commands use the qmp-commands.hx
definition, and thus obey the #ifdeffery there. Good, because it lets
QMP clients probe for available features more easily.
query-qmp-schema uses the QAPI schema, and thus lists the
configuration-specific commands even when they're unavailable. Not so
good.
We're about to flip command dispatch and query-commands to the
non-middle-mode command registry, which uses the QAPI schema, so we
can ditch qmp-commands.hx. To avoid regressing query-commands,
arrange for commands that are suppressed with the preprocessor now to
be unregistered with that registry. This will keep them unavailable
and out of query-commands when we flip command dispatch and
query-commands to that registry, exactly as before.
This is a hack. The proper solution is to support
configuration-specific commands in the QAPI schema. Mark it FIXME.

This is a mostly-mechanical conversion that creates a new flat
union 'Netdev' QAPI type that covers all the branches of the
former 'NetClientOptions' simple union, where the branches are
now listed in a new 'NetClientDriver' enum rather than generated
from the simple union. The existence of a flat union has no
change to the command line syntax accepted for new code, and
will make it possible for a future patch to switch the QMP
command to parse a boxed union for no change to valid QMP; but
it does have some ripple effect on the C code when dealing with
the new types.
While making the conversion, note that the 'NetLegacy' type
remains unchanged: it applies only to legacy command line options,
and will not be ported to QMP, so it should remain a wrapper
around a simple union; to avoid confusion, the type named
'NetClientOptions' is now gone, and we introduce 'NetLegacyOptions'
in its place. Then, in the C code, we convert from NetLegacy to
Netdev as soon as possible, so that the bulk of the net stack
only has to deal with one QAPI type, not two. Note that since
the old legacy code always rejected 'hubport', we can just omit
that branch from the new 'NetLegacyOptions' simple union.

'qjson.h' is not a QObject subtype; include this file directly in
.c files that are using it, rather than abusing qmp/types.h for
that purpose.
Meanwhile, for files that include a list of individual QObject
subtypes, it's easier to just use qmp/types.h for that purpose.

When qemu_set_log_filename() detects an invalid file name, it reports
an error, closes the log file (if any), and starts logging to stderr
(unless daemonized or nothing is being logged).
This is wrong. Asking for an invalid log file on the command line
should be fatal. Asking for one in the monitor should fail without
messing up an existing logfile.
Fix by converting qemu_set_log_filename() to Error. Pass it
&error_fatal, except for hmp_logfile report errors.
This also permits testing without a subprocess, so do that.

would be needed for hotplugging possible CPU objects.
There are:
'type': 'str' - QOM CPU object type for usage with device_add
'vcpus-count': 'int' - number of logical VCPU threads per
CPU object (mgmt needs to know)
and a set of optional fields that are to used for hotplugging a CPU

For present CPUs there is a 'qom-path' field which would allow mgmt to

as CPU object.

The bdrv_next() users all leaked the BdrvNextIterator after completing
the iteration. Simply changing bdrv_next() to free the iterator before
returning NULL at the end of list doesn't work because some callers exit
the loop before looking at all BDSes.
This patch moves the BdrvNextIterator from the heap to the stack of
the caller and switches to a bdrv_first()/bdrv_next() interface for
initialising the iterator.

This patch add "query-gic-capabilities" but does not implement it. The
command is ARM-only. The command will return a list of GICCapability
structs that describes all GIC versions that current QEMU and system
support.
Libvirt is possibly the first consumer of this new command.
Before this patch, a libvirt user can successfully configure all kinds
of GIC devices for ARM guests, no matter whether current QEMU/kernel
supports them. If the specified GIC version/type is not supported, the
user will get an ambiguous "QEMU boot failure" error when trying to start
the VM. This is not user-friendly.
With this patch, libvirt should be able to query which type (and which
version) of GIC device is supported. Using this information, libvirt
can warn the user during configuration of guests when specified GIC
device type is not supported. Or better, we can just list those versions
that we support, and filter out the unsupported ones.
For example, if we got the query result:
{"return": [{"emulated": false, "version": 3, "kernel": true},
{"emulated": true, "version": 2, "kernel": false}]}
then it means that we support emulated GIC version 2 using:
qemu-system-aarch64 -M virt,accel=tcg,gic-version=2 ...
or KVM-accelerated GIC version 3 using:
qemu-system-aarch64 -M virt,accel=kvm,gic-version=3 ...
If we specify other explicit GIC versions rather than the above, QEMU
will not be able to boot.
The community is working on a more generic way to query these kinds of
information about valid values of machine properties. However, due to
the importance of supporting this specific use case, weecided to first
implement this ad-hoc one; then when the generic method is ready, we
can move on to that one smoothly.

This patch replaces get_ticks_per_sec() calls with the macro
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND. Also, as there are no callers, get_ticks_per_sec()
is then removed. This replacement improves the readability and
understandability of code.
For example,
timer_mod(fdctrl->result_timer,
qemu_clock_get_ns(QEMU_CLOCK_VIRTUAL) + (get_ticks_per_sec() / 50));
NANOSECONDS_PER_SECOND makes it obvious that qemu_clock_get_ns
matches the unit of the expression on the right side of the plus.
