15d62536a9 tcg: remove CPU* types from typedefs.h
hw/core/cpu.h is already using struct forward declarations in some cases
to avoid inclusions, and otherwise CPUAddressSpace and CPUJumpCache
are only used together with their definition. CPUTLBEntryFull is
always used when their definition is available. Remove all three
from typedefs.h.

639ec3fbf9 memory: Add Error** argument to the global_dirty_log routines
Now that the log_global*() handlers take an Error** parameter and
return a bool, do the same for memory_global_dirty_log_start() and
memory_global_dirty_log_stop(). The error is reported in the callers
for now and it will be propagated in the call stack in the next
changes.

To be noted a functional change in ram_init_bitmaps(), if the dirty
pages logger fails to start, there is no need to synchronize the dirty
pages bitmaps. colo_incoming_start_dirty_log() could be modified in a
similar way.

b2e9426c04 physmem: Introduce ram_block_discard_guest_memfd_range()
When memory page is converted from private to shared, the original
private memory is back'ed by guest_memfd. Introduce
ram_block_discard_guest_memfd_range() for discarding memory in
guest_memfd.

852f0048f3 RAMBlock: make guest_memfd require uncoordinated discard
Some subsystems like VFIO might disable ram block discard, but guest_memfd
uses discard operations to implement conversions between private and
shared memory. Because of this, sequences like the following can result
in stale IOMMU mappings:

1. allocate shared page
2. convert page shared->private
3. discard shared page
4. convert page private->shared
5. allocate shared page
6. issue DMA operations against that shared page

This is not a use-after-free, because after step 3 VFIO is still pinning
the page. However, DMA operations in step 6 will hit the old mapping
that was allocated in step 1.

Address this by taking ram_block_discard_is_enabled() into account when
deciding whether or not to discard pages.

Since kvm_convert_memory()/guest_memfd doesn't implement a
RamDiscardManager handler to convey and replay discard operations,
this is a case of uncoordinated discard, which is blocked/released
by ram_block_discard_require(). Interestingly, this function had
no use so far.

Alternative approaches would be to block discard of shared pages, but
this would cause guests to consume twice the memory if they use VFIO;
or to implement a RamDiscardManager and only block uncoordinated
discard, i.e. use ram_block_coordinated_discard_require().

15f7a80c49 RAMBlock: Add support of KVM private guest memfd
Add KVM guest_memfd support to RAMBlock so both normal hva based memory
and kvm guest memfd based private memory can be associated in one RAMBlock.

Introduce new flag RAM_GUEST_MEMFD. When it's set, it calls KVM ioctl to
create private guest_memfd during RAMBlock setup.

Allocating a new RAM_GUEST_MEMFD flag to instruct the setup of guest memfd
is more flexible and extensible than simply relying on the VM type because
in the future we may have the case that not all the memory of a VM need
guest memfd. As a benefit, it also avoid getting MachineState in memory
subsystem.

Note, RAM_GUEST_MEMFD is supposed to be set for memory backends of
confidential guests, such as TDX VM. How and when to set it for memory
backends will be implemented in the following patches.

Introduce memory_region_has_guest_memfd() to query if the MemoryRegion has
KVM guest_memfd allocated.

08b2d15cdd runstate: skip initial CPU reset if reset is not actually possible
Right now, the system reset is concluded by a call to
cpu_synchronize_all_post_reset() in order to sync any changes
that the machine reset callback applied to the CPU state.

However, for VMs with encrypted state such as SEV-ES guests (currently
the only case of guests with non-resettable CPUs) this cannot be done,
because guest state has already been finalized by machine-init-done notifiers.
cpu_synchronize_all_post_reset() does nothing on these guests, and actually
we would like to make it fail if called once guest has been encrypted.
So, assume that boards that support non-resettable CPUs do not touch
CPU state and that all such setup is done before, at the time of
cpu_synchronize_all_post_init().

e79f8b8b2d seccomp: report EPERM instead of killing process for spawn set
When something tries to run one of the spawn syscalls (eg clone),
our seccomp deny filter is set to cause a fatal trap which kills
the process.

This is found to be unhelpful when QEMU has loaded the nvidia
GL library. This tries to spawn a process to modprobe the nvidia
kmod. This is a dubious thing to do, but at the same time, the
code will gracefully continue if this fails. Our seccomp filter
rightly blocks the spawning, but prevent the graceful continue.

Switching to reporting EPERM will make QEMU behave more gracefully

f3bff6c443 migration: export fewer options
A small number of migration options are accessed by migration clients,
but to see them clients must include all of options.h, which is mostly
for migration core code. migrate_mode() in particular will be needed by
multiple clients.

Refactor the option declarations so clients can see the necessary few via
misc.h, which already exports a portion of the client API.

47293c922c physmem: Fix wrong address in large address_space_read/write_cached_slow()
If the access is bigger than the MemoryRegion supports,
flatview_read/write_continue() will attempt to update the Memory Region.
but the address passed to flatview_translate() is relative to the cache, not
to the FlatView.

On arm/virt with interleaved CXL memory emulation and virtio-blk-pci this
lead to the first part of descriptor being read from the CXL memory and the
second part from PA 0x8 which happens to be a blank region
of a flash chip and all ffs on this particular configuration.
Note this test requires the out of tree ARM support for CXL, but
the problem is more general.

Avoid this by adding new address_space_read_continue_cached()
and address_space_write_continue_cached() which share all the logic
with the flatview versions except for the MemoryRegion lookup which
is unnecessary as the MemoryRegionCache only covers one MemoryRegion.

e41f32fe82 system/bootdevice: Don't unregister reset handler in restore_boot_order()
Currently the qemu_register_reset() API permits the reset handler functions
registered with it to remove themselves from within the callback function.
This is fine with our current implementation, but is a bit odd, because
generally reset is supposed to be idempotent, and doesn't fit well in a
three-phase-reset world where a resettable object will get multiple
callbacks as the system is reset.

We now have only one user of qemu_register_reset() which makes use of
the ability to unregister itself within the callback:
restore_boot_order(). We want to change our implementation of
qemu_register_reset() to something where it would be awkward to
maintain the "can self-unregister" feature. Rather than making that
reimplementation complicated, change restore_boot_order() so that it
doesn't unregister itself but instead returns doing nothing for any
calls after it has done the "restore the boot order" work.

4edee342f8 exec/ioport: Resolve redundant .base attribute in struct MemoryRegionPortio
portio_list_add_1() creates a MemoryRegionPortioList instance which holds a
MemoryRegion `mr` and an array of MemoryRegionPortio elements named `ports`.
Each element in the array gets assigned the same value for its .base attribute.
The same value also ends up as the .addr attribute of `mr` due to the
memory_region_add_subregion() call. This means that all .base attributes are
the same as `mr.addr`.

The only usages of MemoryRegionPortio::base were in portio_read() and
portio_write(). Both functions get above MemoryRegionPortioList as their
opaque parameter. In both cases find_portio() can only return one of the
MemoryRegionPortio elements of the `ports` array. Due to above observation any
element will have the same .base value equal to `mr.addr` which is also
accessible.

Hence, `mrpio->mr.addr` is equivalent to `mrp->base` and
MemoryRegionPortio::base is redundant and can be removed.

03e471c41d qemu_init: increase NOFILE soft limit on POSIX
In many configurations, e.g. multiple vNICs with multiple queues or
with many Ceph OSDs, the default soft limit of 1024 is not enough.
QEMU is supposed to work fine with file descriptors >= 1024 and does
not use select() on POSIX. Bump the soft limit to the allowed hard
limit to avoid issues with the aforementioned configurations.

Of course the limit could be raised from the outside, but the man page
of systemd.exec states about 'LimitNOFILE=':

> Don't use.
> [...]
> Typically applications should increase their soft limit to the hard
> limit on their own, if they are OK with working with file
> descriptors above 1023,

If the soft limit is already the same as the hard limit, avoid the
superfluous setrlimit call. This can avoid a warning with a strict
seccomp filter blocking setrlimit if NOFILE was already raised before
executing QEMU.

04accf43df oslib-posix: initialize backend memory objects in parallel
QEMU initializes preallocated backend memory as the objects are parsed from
the command line. This is not optimal in some cases (e.g. memory spanning
multiple NUMA nodes) because the memory objects are initialized in series.

Allow the initialization to occur in parallel (asynchronously). In order to
ensure optimal thread placement, asynchronous initialization requires prealloc
context threads to be in use.

d2019a9d0c system/vl.c: Fix handling of '-serial none -serial something'
Currently if the user passes multiple -serial options on the command
line, we mostly treat those as applying to the different serial
devices in order, so that for example
 -serial stdio -serial file:filename
will connect the first serial port to stdio and the second to the
named file.

The exception to this is the '-serial none' serial device type. This
means "don't allocate this serial device", but a bug means that
following -serial options are not correctly handled, so that
 -serial none -serial stdio
has the unexpected effect that stdio is connected to the first serial
port, not the second.

This is a very long-standing bug that dates back at least as far as
commit 998bbd74b9 from 2009.

Make the 'none' serial type move forward in the indexing of serial
devices like all the other serial types, so that any subsequent
-serial options are correctly handled.

Note that if your commandline mistakenly had a '-serial none' that
was being overridden by a following '-serial something' option, you
should delete the unnecessary '-serial none'. This will give you the
same behaviour as before, on QEMU versions both with and without this
bug fix.

a4a411fbaf Replace "iothread lock" with "BQL" in comments
The term "iothread lock" is obsolete. The APIs use Big QEMU Lock (BQL)
in their names. Update the code comments to use "BQL" instead of
"iothread lock".

195801d700 system/cpus: rename qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() to bql_lock()
The Big QEMU Lock (BQL) has many names and they are confusing. The
actual QemuMutex variable is called qemu_global_mutex but it's commonly
referred to as the BQL in discussions and some code comments. The
locking APIs, however, are called qemu_mutex_lock_iothread() and
qemu_mutex_unlock_iothread().

The "iothread" name is historic and comes from when the main thread was
split into into KVM vcpu threads and the "iothread" (now called the main
loop thread). I have contributed to the confusion myself by introducing
a separate --object iothread, a separate concept unrelated to the BQL.

The "iothread" name is no longer appropriate for the BQL. Rename the
locking APIs to:
- void bql_lock(void)
- void bql_unlock(void)
- bool bql_locked(void)

There are more APIs with "iothread" in their names. Subsequent patches
will rename them. There are also comments and documentation that will be
updated in later patches.

58b105703e migration: preserve suspended for snapshot
Restoring a snapshot can break a suspended guest. Snapshots suffer from
the same suspended-state issues that affect live migration, plus they must
handle an additional problematic scenario, which is that a running vm must
remain running if it loads a suspended snapshot.

To save, the existing vm_stop call now completely stops the suspended
state. Finish with vm_resume to leave the vm in the state it had prior
to the save, correctly restoring the suspended state.

To load, if the snapshot is not suspended, then vm_stop + vm_resume
correctly handles all states, and leaves the vm in the state it had prior
to the load. However, if the snapshot is suspended, restoration is
trickier. First, call vm_resume to restore the state to suspended so the
current state matches the saved state. Then, if the pre-load state is
running, call wakeup to resume running.

Prior to these changes, the vm_stop to RUN_STATE_SAVE_VM and
RUN_STATE_RESTORE_VM did not change runstate if the current state was
suspended, but now it does, so allow these transitions.

b9ae473d80 cpus: stop vm in suspended runstate
Currently, a vm in the suspended state is not completely stopped. The VCPUs
have been paused, but the cpu clock still runs, and runstate notifiers for
the transition to stopped have not been called. This causes problems for
live migration. Stale cpu timers_state is saved to the migration stream,
causing time errors in the guest when it wakes from suspend, and state that
would have been modified by runstate notifiers is wrong.

Modify vm_stop to completely stop the vm if the current state is suspended,
transition to RUN_STATE_PAUSED, and remember that the machine was suspended.
Modify vm_start to restore the suspended state.

This affects all callers of vm_stop and vm_start, notably, the qapi stop and
cont commands:

  old behavior:
    RUN_STATE_SUSPENDED --> stop --> RUN_STATE_SUSPENDED

  new behavior:
    RUN_STATE_SUSPENDED --> stop --> RUN_STATE_PAUSED
    RUN_STATE_PAUSED    --> cont --> RUN_STATE_SUSPENDED

For example:

    (qemu) info status
    VM status: paused (suspended)

    (qemu) stop
    (qemu) info status
    VM status: paused

    (qemu) system_wakeup
    Error: Unable to wake up: guest is not in suspended state

    (qemu) cont
    (qemu) info status
    VM status: paused (suspended)

    (qemu) system_wakeup
    (qemu) info status
    VM status: running

e661a24703 dma-helpers: don't lock AioContext in dma_blk_cb()
Commit abfcd2760b ("dma-helpers: prevent dma_blk_cb() vs
dma_aio_cancel() race") acquired the AioContext lock inside dma_blk_cb()
to avoid a race with scsi_device_purge_requests() running in the main
loop thread.

The SCSI code no longer calls dma_aio_cancel() from the main loop thread
while I/O is running in the IOThread AioContext. Therefore it is no
longer necessary to take this lock to protect DMAAIOCB fields. The
->cb() function also does not require the lock because blk_aio_*() and
friends do not need the AioContext lock.

Both hw/ide/core.c and hw/ide/macio.c also call dma_blk_io() but don't
rely on it taking the AioContext lock, so this change is safe.
